Shannons 2009 Day of the Volkswagen - SURVEY
However, to make it even easier, we have enclosed a survey form with each member‟s magazine this month. If you can take the time to complete it and return it to the club by January 22nd you will go into the draw for a $20 fuel voucher. I know this is a little old-fashioned (we will do it online next time) and it will require you to use a stamp, but the information we will gather will help us plan for a better Day of the Volkswagen in the coming years. If you can keep all the information on the one page with your comments on the back of the page will help us immensely. 2010 Dakar Rally: Volkswagen tackles new challenge The toughest test in worldwide motorsport and a new sporting aim for Volkswagen: After its historic victory at the 2009 Dakar Rally in Argentina and Chile the Wolfsburg-based automobile manufacturer will tackle the title defence project at the same venue. When the five factoryprepared and factory-fielded Race Touareg vehicles move across the starting ramp for the 32nd running of the desert classic in Buenos Aires on 01 January 2010 Volkswagen, for the first time, will be in the position of the squad being hunted. At the Dakar Rally‟s debut in South America – a gruelling cross-country rally from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans and back – Volkswagen was the first manufacturer in the history of crosscountry rally racing to celebrate victory with a diesel-powered automobile at
the beginning of this year. A year after this triumph Volkswagen wants history to repeat itself despite even more technically demanding endurance tests – after 14 legs across extreme desert passages, crossings of the Andes and quick gravel stretches another Volkswagen duo should finish the event victoriously.
Andes at altitudes of up to 4,700 metres above mean sea level as well as quick gravel stages on hard ground are part of the daily challenges. In addition to the drivers and co-drivers, the entire squad will be completing a cross -country marathon to ensure the best possible logistical support.
VW to Field Five Race Touareg Vehicles at 2010 “Dakar”.
“Victory at the Dakar Rally was the biggest exploit for Volkswagen in motorsport,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “But now this triumph is history. Clearly, our new goal is to prove at the 2010 Dakar Rally yet again that the Race Touareg continues being what made it the „Dakar‟ winner: the most reliable and quickest crosscountry rally vehicle worldwide. The squad is extremely eager and motivated to demonstrate that the Dakar Wolfsburg. The “factory” duos unanimously pursue one goal: to repeat the victory achieved in the 2009 Dakar Rally by the first diesel-powered automobile in the history of the tradition-steeped desert rally at the same venue. In January 2009 de Villiers/von Zitzewitz triumphed ahead of their team-mates Miller/Pitchford and thus made history: Volkswagen won the first “Dakar” held on South American soil with the 280-hp cross-country rally prototype. “At the 2009 Dakar Rally we showed that the Race Touareg is not only the most reliable but also the fastest cross -country rally vehicle in the world and that the Volkswagen Group‟s TDI technology is superior to other diesel power concepts,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “We want to successfully defend our title at the upcoming „Dakar‟. We have put together a powerful drivers‟ squad. I‟m happy that by signing Maurício Neves and Clécio Maestrelli we‟ve been able to contract two local heroes from the South American continent.” Maurício Neves: debut with the Race Touareg in Brazil Maurício Neves is already intimately familiar with the Volkswagen Race Touareg. The Brazilian driver made his competition debut in the “Dakar” prototype from Wolfsburg at the Rally dos Sertões at the end of June 2009. At the “little Dakar” in Brazil, which covered a distance of 4,500 kilometres, the 40-year-old Neves finished third in class behind the commanding one-two winners Sainz/Cruz and Al-Attiyah/ Gottschalk and sixth overall. Clécio Maestrelli was signed as Neves‟ co-driver for the upcoming “Dakar”.

Clécio Maestrelli navigated Neves as his codriver in most of these exploits.
VW Amarok will be Official Support Vehicle for Dakar Rally
Dakar Rally will also see four teams from Volkswagen Motorsport as well as many other teams travelling 9,000 km through Argentina and Chile. The rally starts and finishes in Buenos Aires. The Amarok will undergo an endurance test during the Dakar Rally, because it will have to handle all the challenges of the demanding stages: as the organiser‟s vehicle to reconnoitre the rally stages, as a press vehicle and as a shuttle for the Volkswagen Motorsport team. Four of the Volkswagen Amarok from the A.S.O. fleet will get additional offroad conversions for the trip, and four Panamericana multivans will also be used.

The Day of the Volkswagen this year was held on Sunday 6th December in magnificent weather conditions and a casual picnic atmosphere. This event is organised each by the Volkswagen Club of WA (Inc) and well supported by various people and businesses with an interest in VWs along with the main sponsor – Shannons Insurance. It is open to both VW Club members and anybody with an interest in Volkswagens old and new. Besides the members there were VW enthusiasts from such groups as the NoH2O collective, Kombi Konnection and VW Watercooled
show their car, have a look at what everybody has done to personalise their Vee Dubs, or just to have a day out and catch up with one another for a chat. The show is not restricted to VW branded vehicles, as all vehicles belonging to the VW family (Karmann, Audi, and Skoda to name a few) are all welcome! This brought out some unique vehicles this year, with a Corrado (a US Volkswagen), a Ferrari kit car (VW motor of course) and a Lamborghini Espada (VW owns Lamborghini). The day included a new vehicle display, a swap meet for
that made it a great day. The show was also privileged in having the Formula Vees in attendance in large numbers. While the show has been acknowledged in the past as the biggest show of the year in the WA Volkswagen calendar, this year it was the biggest ever with a record 210 cars through the gate, eclipsing the previous year by about 50 cars. Many people were there competing in the Show and Shine where 25 trophies were presented for the various categories from Beetle and Kombis to Karmanns and Golfs, and everything in between. Other people were there just to
those interested in all the bits and pieces, a day raffle, rocker cover racing, Kids Korner and the essential refreshments - a coffee van, sausage sizzle, and ice cream van. It all came together to be a resounding success with a lot of hard work put in by the volunteer workforce, so planning for next year has now begun. The tradition of holding the show on the 1st Sunday in December each year will continue with the 2010 show being held on Sunday 5th December 2010. Put it in your diary, and keep a look out for coming event information. Come along and help make the Shannons Day of the Volkswagen in WA the best ever! Ray Willis

The 2009 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen was a great success. Despite the unfortunate (late) change in location and some resulting issues, all who came seemed to really enjoy the event. It was even raved about on talkback radio in the following week! The spectacular attendance of over 200 cars really added to the day.
for families. Shade on a hot summer day is always welcome. The children enjoyed the colouring in competition and the rocker cover racing.
It was pleasing to see the continuing high standard of the restored class of vehicle, but also pleasing to see the number of recent VW's present. The day is meant to be a celebration of all of the products of the Volkswagen Group, old and new. The new vehicles on display also gave the public an opportunity to look at some of the current products of the VW Group and hopefully this will generate some more VW owners. There were a few VW affiliates at the day and it is an area in which the Club would like to increase interest. We had a Seat, Audi and Lamborghini this year, but no Skoda, Bentley, NSU or Bugatti graced the event with their presence. It was also pleasing to see various groups set up a small area for themselves and make the event much more user friendly
Other popular attractions were the Shannon's tent, and they were very happy with the contact made with people at the show. The ice cream van was extremely popular followed by the sausage sizzlers and the coffee van. Smiles all round! Much of the success of the day was due to the efforts of VW Club members and others from the noH20 Collective, Formula Vee's, Kombi Konnection and the watercooled group. The Club would also like to thank all of the commercial organisations who supported the day with goods and services. Thank you one and all.
Page 11
The Club learned a lot about things that were liked on the day, but also where attention needs to be directed for next year. It must be remembered that the day was a success despite the relatively small numbers of helpers. Put a note in your diary for next year's event and put forward your name to volunteer some of your time to make sure we have another successful show.

2009 DoVW - a top spectacle, record entries, fantastic weather and an excellent range of Volkswagens. As the club has over 100 memberships now, it seemed that most may have been there on the day. Thanks to those who stepped up to help from 7am, especially the non members. Parking space was at a premium with 210 in the gate and there were spectator cars jumping kerbs to find parking spaces, people queuing for food and plenty of sun cream being applied. Page 15 keep me awake for a week, let alone a day. When I found out that I was to have a Golf 118 TSi for a few days, I also had pre-conceived ideas. I knew this was a 1.4 litre engine, but also knowing the 118 represents the number of kilowatts it produces, I thought it would be more than enough to pull the proverbial skin of a rice pudding. You see, the 118kw 1.4 TSi Golf produces 84kw per litre. My 2.0l 103kw TDi Jetta produces 51kw per litre and the Aussie 6.0l V8
Size Doesn‟t Matter - It‟s how you use it Review by Rod McSwain I was touring Europe with my family back in May of 2001. It was about 9am one particular morning and as we had made an early start, we had skipped the morning coffee and were hanging out for one. As we entered St Tropez, we began looking for a parking spot and went for a walk along the waters edge in search of a café, dodging paint splattered artists, exotic cars and dogs. Finding one was like finding sand on a beach, but finding an empty table was the hard part. We finally found a street café across from a 50foot yacht moored in the harbour, next to lots of 49 footers. I looked down the list of coffees thinking that I‟d like to try something different. It seemed I had no choice, as the list was all in French
and I didn‟t understand a word of what I was reading. I spotted café double and muttered “you beauty, thinking I had found a double size coffee on the list”. I ordered it. But how more wrong could I be? It turned out to be a small cup of black coffee, that I struggled to pick up by the handle in 2 fingers and it had a double shot. It was enough to
SS Commodore at 270kw only produces 45kw per litre. That makes the TSi nearly twice as efficient as the SS which guzzles 13.9l/100klm, compared to the Golf which also drinks fuel at half the rate. The TS in the badge stands for Turbocharged and Supercharged. So how does it work? Well according to Volkswagen, this is how. Firstly, Volkswagen says it is the first and only manufacturer worldwide that is offering twin-charged technology in a mass volume series engine. The TSI engine uses a comparatively small amount of cubic capacity, making it fuel efficient while delivering high torque at low revs and a continuous surge of power. The idea is to reach maximum torque at low revs and to deliver it over a wide rev range. The engine achieves optimum fuel delivery by injecting fuel at 150 bar directly into the combustion chambers. The combustion process takes advantage of the evaporation cooling effect to allow a high compression ratio of 10:1. Other engines with high charge pressures have one limitation. The low exhaust energy at low revs causes so called turbo lag. This is where dual charging (Continued on page 16)

Page 16 lights, slim front grill and headlights, along with a VW characteristic clean bodyline from front wheel arch to rear tail light. In fact all panels except the roof are new, even though it is on the same platform as the Mk5. It all added up though to make it a nice handling package with the 16” rims shod with 205/55‟s as well as the Adaptive chassis control.
(Continued from page 15)
comes into play. VW engineers added a second charging component before the turbo charger, a high speed mechanically driven compressor. This effectively eliminates turbo lag. When high torque is demanded in a lower rev range, the compressor runs continuously keeping the pressure at 1.8 bar when idling and it‟s not until 3500 rpm that the turbo charger runs unassisted even when more power is required at high speed. But when the engine revs drop back into the lower range and power is demanded again the engine management system responds immediately and the compressor is activated again. A control flap is closed and the air passes by the compressor. As a result of high temperature resistant materials the fuel economy is maximised even at high speeds. All tests show that this engine with high dynamic performance which relative to its power output of 125kw is extremely economical. VW made more than 250 prototypes and pre production engines were used to end up with an engine that gives both an enjoyable drive plus economy So how does it go? I was initially glad there were no capacity markings on the car. Besides, what would have that done for my ego? After all, isn‟t it only driving school cars that have a 1.4 in them? Then why would I pay $32,990 for a 1.4? Admittedly to make it more comfortable, the test car was optioned with over $10,000 worth of extras. They included metallic paint, electric glass
sunroof, park assist, alarm system, satnav and the sport pack option which includes leather and adaptive chassis control (ACC) that gives the option of sport–normal-comfort modes. 7 airbags are standard as is 7 speeds in the DSG box – which comes with hill start. All the usual Volkswagen standard features were there.
I have to share the experience of receiving my first witnessed praise for my driving skills. A few beers had obviously lubricated the crowd, but I was trying out the park assist for the first time, outside a country pub as it turned out and didn‟t realise I was being watched. I set it up, put my hands in the air – as if I was being held to ranBy the time I had to take it back, I som - and let the Golf park itself, only wanted to put a big sign on the back of to get out to the applause of the group. the car saying – size doesn‟t matter. With the Golf having been awarded 2009 World Car of the Year, and the 1.4 TSi picking up 2009 International engine of the year as well as 2009 International Green engine of the year, in emitting only 144g of C02 per klm, I decided to change my mindset and ignore the fact that it was a 1.4. To drive it, you would not know it was a 1.4 as it produces 240NM all the way from 1500 to 4500 revs, it is not a slug when encouraged and takes 8.0 sec to 100kph and has a top speed of 220kph. I did find the slug though. Around the city the DSG was in 7th by 60kph at times and it took more than a stamp on the go pedal to make it respond when instant propulsion was required. It‟s not a light car either, but is rated at 7.5l/100klm in the city, 5.2 in the country and 6.2 overall. This is where I begged to differ, as I did not get near the overall figure. Admittedly I did at times cruise in the 4‟s, but obviously not consistently enough. I did a lot of stop start driving as a tourist, but considering most of the 1000 klm was country driving, I only managed 7.2. However, the 55 litre tank will still give you around 750 klm. I also cant understand why it is classified as a small car, because at 4.3 metres long 1.7 wide and 1.5 high it‟s stance appears low and wide, enhance by the tail
I took a bow and proceeded inside for a meal. They were impressed and so was I at the simplicity of it all. Inside the Golf, there is room in the hatch for 2 small suit cases plus backpacks and extras. Gone is the attractive red and blue dash lighting copied by the Daewoo/Holden Cruze, but the Golf now has a more up market look with chrome highlights around the steering wheel and console controls and vents. There is also a lot of information in the Multi Function Display

It‟s a marked improvement over the Mk5 with thicker glass and improved heated side mirrors that still contain the indicators. The drive on loose surfaces left me unflustered, but you need to be aware of the low clearance of 80-90 mm and some of those car park speed humps and raised pedestrian crossings.

map, I could not find a suitable scale. Apart from that, it was not up to date - a downside of Perth having expanded so rapidly over the past few years - but even a few well worn roads in the South West of WA didn‟t even appear. All the passive safety features such as ESP, ABS and EBD are there along with the 5star safety rating and daytime running lights. All engines in the range currently meet Euro 5 standards, which is totally contrary to Ford Australia who is introducing a “new” engine in 2010 to meet Euro4.
The satnav comes with a reversing camera. When you seI‟m not bagging the new Golf, because it has just picked up lect reverse the VW logo on the hatch tilts to give you an numerous Australian COTY awards, and there is no quesexcellent rear view on the console screen. I found the sattion that it deserves them, but with similar performance, but nav itself a little frustrating. When following my route on the far superior economy, I would be happy to drop a sunroof and self parking and opt for the 6 speed DSG 2.0l diesel. And if Volkswagen Australia opted to bring the Bluemotion range down under, there would be no argument in any corner.
