MOTIVATION
the not so secret guide to success written by : Zayan Abdulla Salih
Before venturing into the question of what drives success, raise a thought of what it is that YOU want to achieve. There may be exceptions but it is a common fact that to be successful you must first have a goal that you want to reach. In defining your goal, learn to be specific and have a time frame in mind, in which you should reach your goal.

Many of us find ourselves in motivational slumps that we have to work to get out of. Sometimes it’s like a continuous cycle where we are motivated for a period of time, fall out and then have to build things back up again. There is nothing more powerful for selfmotivation than the right attitude. You can’t choose or control your circumstance, but can choose your attitude towards your circumstances.

When you get to the stage where you are regularly helping others keep motivated –
be it with a blog or talking with peers – you’ll find the cycle continuing where each facet of staying motivated is refined and developed.
After you get started on something, you’ll almost always just get into it and keep going. There will be times when you have to do things you really don’t want to: that’s where the other steps and tips from other writers come in handy. However, the most important thing, that I think is worth repeating, is to just get started. Get that momentum going and then when you need to Take A Break. No one wants to work all the time!

With less than 60 days for the kick off of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil, there is no doubt that we as fans, and the media has put forward some mutual favourites. The majority of the opinions as always lean towards Spain, Germany and of course, the host nation of Brazil. There is no question these teams have the players and the backing to go all the way, but no competition is complete without the underdog; that dark horse that could be the biggest of imminent surprises when it comes to any major sporting event. That having said, there are quite a few teams across many different qualifying regions that could pull of this upset; or well, pleasant surprise if you’re a neutral rooting for the underdog. We are going to be looking at 3 of those teams, who are making a good case of their chances at taking the most watched sporting spectacle by the scruff of the neck.
23 VIBE | APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
“if you’re a neutral rooting for the underdog. We are going to be looking at three of those teams”
BELGIUM
Starting off with my favourite of the lot, this team coached by Marc Wilmots has taken the footballing world by storm. The average age of this golden age Belgium team is just 25 and boasts many popular players. Ranked 54th in the world only two years ago, they changed that to a remarkable 6th with their unbeaten qualification run to Brazil with eight wins and a draw. Their best result in FIFA World Cups so far was fourth place in 1986, and knowing the diversity of their squad, I am sure no one will argue they could do even better this time in Brazil. So who are these remarkable players? In goal, Belgium has Liverpool’s Mignolet and Athletico Madrid’s Courtois! Yes, two world class keepers. Their defensive line is compromised of the likes of Manchester City Captain Vincent Kompany, Arsenal’s Vermaelen, Tottenham’s Vertonghen and Bayern Munich defender Van Buyten. Midfield is not any less valuable with Manchester United’s Fellaini, Chelsea’s Hazard & De Bruyne, Tottenham’s Chadli & Dembele, and even Everton’s Mirallas providing support. And of course to top it off, world class strikers in the form of Benteke and Lukaku. All popular players, majority playing in the EPL and who don’t need further introductions I’m sure.
highlight Perspective
There is no doubt these red devils are going to give any opponent a serious run for their money.
IVORY COAST
The ‘Les Elephants’ qualified for their third straight World Cup after beating Senegal in the qualification stages. During their last two runs, they had the misfortune of being placed in the so called “group of death” and did not make it through to the knockout phases. However, with a relatively easier group in the form of Colombia, Greece and Japan, they will definitely be fancying their chances this time around. This team led by Coach Sabri Lamouchi faced much disappointment as they went out of the quarter finals of the 2013 African Cup of Nations; despite being named favourites. And it is that motivation to make up for it, which could give them the kickstart they need to pull of this shock. Even with an average age of 27, their squad has the right blend of youth and experience and they will be looking towards their big guns, the Toure brothers, Kalou, Gervinho and of course their talisman striker/captain inspiration Didier Drogba to lead the onslaught in Brazil.
24 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
COLUMbIA
Any team featuring Radamel Falcao’ needs to be feared. With 70 goals for Atletico Madrid in just 2 seasons (2011-2013), and having the rare honour of being one of the few players to score 5 goals in a single La Liga match, there is no doubt he is one of the elite strikers in the game today. The last time the ‘Los Cafeteros’ made it to the FIFA World Cup was in 1998 when they were on the giants of game. After several years of disappointment, they have definitely picked up, finishing two points behind giants Argentina, and second overall. Under former Argentina manager, Jose Pekerman, they scored 25 goals in their qualifying campaign. Even though the majority of players on the team are not well known, it’s a strong team led by former Milan defender Mario Yepes and with an average age of 28. With a manager that loves to play wide, what will definitely be on show is their attacking flair. Players like Guarin of Internazionale and James Rodriguez of Porto will bomb forward to provide support for River Plate’s Gutierrez, Porto’s Jackson Martinez and of
course their star striker, Falcao’! That fearsome quartet will look to send Colombia further than their previous best of Quarter Finals and to put the pain of past failings behind them.
THE REST OF THE PACK
So yes, there is no doubt any of these 3 teams could pull of a remarkable upset come June. But let’s also not forget the other potential underdogs.
25 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
Japan
, that has plenty attacking flair in their line up (Kagawa, Honda, Endo)
USA
, led by German legend Klinsmann, which went on a 12 game winning streak and have experience with the likes of Howard, Dempsey and Donovan.
Nigeria
, first African team to qualify and reigning African Cup of Nations Champions with star studded players such as a Martins, Obi Mikel and Moses.
Chile
, that came third in qualifying and have notable players in the form of Isla, Vidal and of course Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez.
You may be a neutral excited to see these teams play, or maybe you are still set on supporting one of the giants. But as we wait anxiously and excitedly for kick off day, what we can definitely guarantee is some immense fun! After all, it’s Brasil! Bring on the Samba football!

FASHION
Featuring her own set of outfits exclusively in 2007 on the RUNWAY show, Rimie explored her talents of thinking outside the box, focusing all her ideas in to one single theme. Definitely a success in terms of self development, Rimie stole the show as best designer. With her own academic background in designing, Rimie sets a great example as she shares her talent by teaching aspiring designers. With a hint of ‘classy’ in all her outfits, Rimie has worked for some of the most well-known celebrities in the region. In the year 2009, she brought more of her inner talent by creating outfits for all the models in the reality show, EVINCE Model. She states that designing is not entirely about presenting the final product to a client, but in ensuring their full satisfaction with her work until the very last bit of any event. Rimie claims that she has a habit of staying back with the client in helping her pick out further accessories/shoes to match the outfit.
“It’s the final moment that counts; right when she/he walks in to their planned spot/event/ show” she says. “You have to sync with your client, make sure their smile stays on throughout. Nothing is worth more.”
32 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
Unfortunately though, it seems Fashion Designing is not as easy to be practiced here as it would seem. Drawing up a sketch and making it in to a winning reality, can be acquired through continuous zest and the support from the requested client. “I love to make my own designs. Usually though, it’s clients coming in with their own idea of designs. They bring me pictures and ask me to sew up a dress in accord with their idea. But what they probably do not understand is the fact that I’m wired to create my own customized designs. I am able to recognize what could work and what could not. Depending on their fitting and requirements of bringing out a particular theme or style, a designer would have the knowledge in delivering the perfect piece of apparel; be it a wedding dress, party dresses or men outfits”.
Rimie defines fashion designing as having the freedom to simply create. She believes that designing and sewing are entirely two different areas. A designer need not necessarily be a tailor. “Designing outlines all the details, right from the material of the clothing to the beads and accessories to be used on the outfit. Here in Maldives, I find that people may have a misconception where a designer is expected to sew as well. But I’d love to see the day when I am able to design my own clothes and hand it over to someone and expect them to bring out the same product as the sketch. For me, that’s what designing is. At times I feel that people are afraid of seeing a sketch; they have their
doubts that a real result can be brought out with a simply drawn-up idea. That, for me, becomes quite a challenge”. While this may take some time for our community in adapting to, hopefully it’s not too far off. Rimie claims that she awaits a day for when fashion designers such as herself would be able to indulge in exposing their talents, through exhibitions; something which she believes would definitely be of value. With an eye out for the latest trends and a heart of gold to carry her through, we wish Rimie all the best in her future ventures. Need to know reasons why you aren’t Losing Weight? Need more sleep if you don’t sleep well, then the body’s hormone axis don’t work properly. They affect metabolism and eventually lead to weight gain. Doctors say if you aren’t sleeping, your body won’t be digesting food normally either. Besides, people suffering from insomnia often snack through the night or drink coffee, which makes the problem worse. Fix it: Get into a routine by going to bed at regular times and waking up at the same time, even during the weekends. Steer clear of caffeine after 4 pm and try to avoid iPhones or watching TV in your bedroom. Instead, unwind by reading before going to bed.
You’re depressed the problem here is twofold. Most people share an emotional relationship with food. So when depressed, they tend to eat more. However, antidepressants can also stimulate the appetite as, when people feel happier, thanks to the medication, they overeat. Fix it: It’s important not to use an increase in appetite as an excuse to eat the wrong foods. Instead, make sure you always have healthy snacks, such as fruit, nuts and seeds, on hand to stave off those pangs of hunger.
You’re stressed when adrenaline (the stress hormone) kicks in, the body produces more cortisol, which in turn causes hunger. When you’re stressed it’s tempting to turn to unhealthy

ready meals, high-calorie snacks. Stress can also make you feel lethargic. All of these factors take their toll on the waistline. Fix it: Even in times of stress, eat regular, healthy meals. People who are stressed at work tend to laze around in bed on weekends, but that makes matters worse. Unless you eat within half an hour of waking up, the body will go into fasting mode and store up the last meal in case you don’t eat.
Eating late at night Studies have shown that people who consume the same calories as others, but eat them an hour or two before going to bed will put on more weight than those who eat earlier. This is because the body is aware that you are not being active, so it stores the calories by turning them into fat. It takes the body longer to convert this
Fix it: Eat your main meal at lunchtime and then have a smaller, lighter meal in the evening, at least three hours before going to bed. The body’s ability to digest food reduces as the sun sets.
You’ve cut out carbs We all know you need a balanced diet to be healthy but for many of us, cutting out carbs is a sure-fire way to reduce a few kilos quickly. However, when you eliminate something from your diet, the body starts to crave it. Carbs are important building blocks for the body to turn into energy.

gratitude extend far beyond serious traumatic events. Simply expressing gratitude has positive effects on daily lives. I was speaking to some High school students about gratitude .Students that counted their blessings expressed enhanced self- reported gratitude, optimism, life satisfaction and decreased negative feelings. In adults the keeping of gratitude journals and reading led to overall happier thoughts. Also they tend to help someone with a personal problem or offered emotional support to another, suggesting that the positive affects of gratitude expands outward. DJ ANGIE Music instilled in her bones and a positive energy in her veins, Maldives+ first paid female DJ Syzygy (AnGie) set out for a rough ride, as she shares the story about making her dream come true. “I was always intrigued by music,” she says. “But I never set out to do this till quite recent, in 2009. It was during my days abroad that I was truly moved by the beats. The biggest thrill for me was playing around with the mixer and I was extremely curious to learn.” With her mind set, in 2009 Angie completed her basic Beginner’s course from DJ Academy, Sri Lanka. But, it was not without challenges. “As soon as I moved back home there were limitations. I had no place to practice, no setup and I felt as if I could lose touch at it any minute. So I decided to save up and make my own”. For Angie this finally became a reality in 2011. “After much struggle and waiting, it finally happened. I had my own setup where I could practice whenever I wanted. For me, that was a huge step.”
42 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
The year 2013 found Angie setting out for another learning experience. It was at SAE Thailand where she completed an Electronic Music Production Course that undoubtedly helped her to brush up her skills and align her more towards her dreams. Influenced by Progressive House, Tech House, Techno and Minimal, Angie believes that ‘you don’t just play to make people dance; you play for good music to fill the air.’ Today, she awaits a signed-seal contract with one of the best employer’s around, while enjoying a business partnership with her father. When we got the chance to meet this self-made Diva, I just had to ask; What was the biggest challenge you faced here in Maldives? The fact that I was a private individual seeking employment in this field. I didn’t come from an association so it was very hard to start off and set an image. There was this one time when I felt so de-
motivated by a comment, particularly because it stated two things which I cannot change; that I was a girl and a local. That really hit hard. If it was something regarding my music, or the way I play, I could’ve always tried to fix it and make it better. This was different though. In this case, there was no way I could gain more ground. I am a girl and I am not sorry for that, nor am I sorry for being a local. Your alias is pretty interesting. What’s the significance? Well, [laughs] Syzygy refers to three celestial bodies in one alignment. It’s when the sun, moon and earth align into one single line and that’s when eclipse occurs too. I found it very deep. What’s your biggest achievement up-to date? Participating in the RAVE show “Cupid 2014” abroad would definitely be it. It wasn’t just about getting the exposure
and meeting so many different people, but getting compliments from random strangers who heard my mix, let alone, top DJ’s from different parts of the world expressing their feelings towards my performance, became such a thrill. It’s one of the best things to see people enjoying and moving to the music that you’re making. How do you chill out? Anything that gives me an adrenaline rush. I love playing the PS3; Need for Speed is my thing. I enjoy swimming -- well actually, I love the water. Currently I am trying out wind surfing. Anything related to water sports and I’m in! Besides that, I’m into documentaries and listening to audio books. You’re into business as well, right? Yes. I don’t entirely depend on my being a DJ for the money I make or the life I am building. You always need a
43 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
backup. I am planning to open up a shop very soon. Other than that, I help out my Dad at his firm. I’m a Marketing Manager outside my DJ life, as well. My family is so supportive and I wouldn’t have been able to go this far without their understanding. See, you need to keep a balance. DJ -ing is my passion but once you come back to reality, life goes on. You have to work hard. What advice would you give to those who pursue the same interest? I would love to see more girls stepping up and following this field at Maldives. And be it a guy or girl, I’d advise them to follow their heart. If you don’t have the genuine passion there is no kick. You can’t just act out that you’re into something. When you’re really into it, you move differently. You may not even notice the crowd. You move to your own rhythm. If you want it, don’t ever give up. Never stop till you achieve it. If you feel like you’re struggling,
be patient. I had moments where I thought I would just drown in my sorrow [laughs]. But in due time, everything falls in to place and even the right people come along. Dreams are never wrong. Take a moment and think. There’s always a reason to move forward. Don’t just give up due to obstacles. Angie had her own share of doubts at some points, but the light at the end of the tunnel proved far more worthy. For more updates on Angie’s current works, follow her on her page Facebook/Angie So, what are you waiting for? Start working on your dream.

It’s the adrenalin rush. The feeling of experiencing ‘forbidden love’ and ‘stolen kisses’ to which great romantic novels have been written to are once- in-a-lifetime opportunities for some people written by : Riala
“I hate her! She lured my boyfriend away from me. I was on a scholarship and she took advantage of the situation. ” This was how Sara explained what happened with her long-time relationship with her exboyfriend. That was 2 years back. Then she met Farshan. “It was love at first sight. I knew I belong with him. Isn’t he charming?!” Sara sighed and showed me his text message and there he had written “From the first time I saw you, I knew you are mine.” We were discussing her budding relationship over coffee. No, let me rephrase that. She was telling me about her infatuation over this guy and I was expected to nod and smile to everything she says, over coffee. She kept on blabbering about how they met and how they keep on texting and how his wife accidently read one of the text messages Sara sent him.
47 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
“Wait! Did you say his wife!? You mean he is married?!” I suddenly jerked my attention to really listen to what she was actually saying. “Yeah. He was really pissed off. I asked him what did she say and he said he told her it was just work stuff ” then she giggled. I couldn’t believe my ears. I shook my head and asked again “You mean Frashan is married?” I wanted to make sure I got all the information right. “Yet. But he is not happy. He wants to leave her. He wants to divorce her. The only reason he is still married is because they have a son. He said Ayaan means a lot to him. He is soooo cute. Do you want to see a picture of Ayaan?” “Sara! My God! What have you got yourself into? How do you know that he is telling
the truth?” I was confused. He has a son too? Where is his wife? What will she be thinking? Or does she even know? Is he telling the truth? How can Sara expect him to be faithful to her after the way he is treating his wife? Lots of questions started clouding my judgment over the situation. That night I lay awake on the bed staring up at the ceiling and started to wonder. I know Sara. She hated the girl who ‘stole’ her boyfriend two years back. She was devastated. She was heartbroken and sometimes it sounds like she is still not over the betrayal and hurt and suddenly she is who she hates most! How and why did she turn out to be the one person she loathed most in the world? Sara is not different from many of girls I know. She has to have a boyfriend. Being single is ‘depressing’ for her. She feels

‘lonely’ even if she is surrounded by people and especially when the topic is her. She claims time’s running out and remind the rest of us how ‘old’ we are getting and how quickly and so it’s essential to ‘grab’ someone before we runs out of our biological time.
Potential Boyfriend – Married vs Single Single men are attractive or else why would they be called eligible bachelors? But to have gone through a failed relationship, it is all too tiring to think of starting a new one from scratch and to put in all that effort to maintain and build a relationship. Men are hard to understand. We never know if they are just testing the waters or merely having fun still, because they are ‘not ready to settle down yet’.

But why does it have to be a married man? One might wonder. I did too. “Married men are obviously more experienced than single men. Plus they already know how to be with a woman and make them happy”. A friend pointed out the obvious answer. A married man is better than a single man since he has already been screened and chosen to be the desirable marital partner by the woman who has married him. It’s the adrenalin rush. The feeling of experiencing ‘forbidden love’ and ‘stolen kisses’ to which great romantic novels have been written to are once- in-a-lifetime opportunities for some people. It’s sheer luck for some people to have so much happen in their lives, while others lead a rather ‘boring’ life. But once a woman starts dating a married
man, the woman becomes the other woman in his life. And why would anyone want to be the second best? If he is cheating and lying to his wife, wouldn’t he do the same to his mistress too? Of course he would!
A New Game - Risk vs Competition Starting a ‘secret’ affair gives a sense of excitement. And it’s challenging too. Once a woman starts an affair with the married man, a competition starts. Women don’t usually compete for the man, but with the woman – his wife. It becomes rather exciting, since, the mistress already has an added advantage in the situation because she offers something new to him. It can be a second chance to boost the ego to people like Sara, who has been already been cheated on, to prove self-worth. To her, this
is the time to start climbing up the rope to which she has been clinging on to with hope, as she was thrown off the cliff from the previous relationship.
they lose? It’s not just the game or the man. It’s a blow to the ego and getting labeled in the society as the ‘home wrecker’ even if they didn’t in the end.
For men, it’s a totally different story. They like to add a little spice to life and according to research done, three quarters of married men admit they are willing to have extra-marital affairs if they knew they would never get caught.
A Choice?
“It’s a risk. But if he leaves his wife for you, then it’s worth the risk.” One of my friends said when we talked about the situation. True. It’s a risk, they say. By taking the risk, they get a husband. Probably start a life and build a home, but at the extent of another home? By breaking another woman’s heart and wrecking a marriage? And what do
“
49 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
Why take the risk then, knowing there’s so much to lose than win? I asked Sara. She shrugged and looked at me sadly. I noticed the sadness she wanted me to see on her face didn’t reach her eyes. It was sparkling. With Excitement? I wondered! But there’s the other side of the coin too. Some women fall prey to philandering husbands who paint a real nice picture of an ‘unhappy loveless marriage’ in which he is captivated by the love he feels for his children or/and the respect he shows for the older parents. The stories are almost the same. Lame excuses, if you ask me! “She doesn’t care about me. She takes everything for granted. Never appreciates what i have been doing for her.” We are married only in name. She never
sees me as her husband. I don’t know why she even stays married to me.” “I can’t lie anymore. I’m never happy with her. I feel suffocated in this marriage.” These are some of the ‘lines’ men uses. Then why does women fall prey? Are they as naïve and stupid? It’s not stupidity, neither being naïve. It’s the hope that one of the men really is telling the truth that makes the woman to make up her mind to give him a chance. In the hope that one day that she would be the only woman in his heart and life and not the other woman.

FOOD AND NUTRITION
Fitting healthy habits into your hectic lifestyle
There just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish everything you need to do. And it can feel like an added stressor when you are trying to integrate healthy habits into your already hectic schedule. But if you make time for healthy habits, you’ll find yourself with extra reserves of energy that will lower your stress and help you get through life’s challenges.
Cut back on the amount of soda and coffee you drink.
Stock up on healthy, portable snacks.
Sugar and caffeine dehydrate you and create energy rushes followed by crashes, which are ultimately energy-depleting. Substitute with drinks like green tea or 100% fruit juice.
Cutting back on the amount of refined sugar you consume helps reduce calories and weight gain and also helps you avoid the energy slumps that come from sugar withdrawal. Items high in refined sugar include most soft drinks, cereals, baked goods, and of course, candy and ice cream. Look for low-sugar or no-sugar versions of these, or simply opt for healthy snacks instead.
Drink water throughout the day.
Replace high-sugar foods with low-sugar versions.
You don’t hear this nearly enough: water is an all-purpose wonder-substance. It’s great for your skin, your digestive system, and circulatory system, and aids in weight loss and cellulite reduction. If you feel fatigued during the day, it’s often because you aren’t hydrated properly. Drink water throughout the day, sipping from a large bottle or glass. If you have it nearby, it’s easy to remember.

#ALL OVER THE PLACE
Are you #using #hashtags when #you #write a #social #statusupdate on #Facebook or a #tweet on #Twitter? #ohmygoodness #itssotrendy.
#
Hashtags are all over the place. You even hear people talking in hashtag speak (#crazy). The hashtag craze began in Twitter as a way to group topics, events, and other kinds of conversations. Hashtags work nicely over on Twitter because you can easily search for the latest news or trending topic. Recently, Facebook has joined in on the hashtag craze, and you can use hastags on Google+ as well. In theory, hashtags can be a good thing. You can search for news items and trending topics. If you are doing research for a book or report, it’s a handy tool to have for search purposes. Need the latest scoop on a celebrity or one of your competitors? Use their name in a hashtag. Searching for news in a particular industry? Add a hashtag. For example: #coffeeshop, #salon, #healthinsurance. By simply adding the hashtag in front of the word you wish to tag, you are creating a clickable link. People can click the link and they will be brought to other status updates, and tweets, using the same hashtag. In reality, however, hashtags have become something that most people don’t understand, and very often abused. If used correctly, “hashtags are a good thing”. Let’s see what you can do with them:
68 VIBE |APRIL 2014 www.vibetrends.com
Organizing your search based on subject. As previously mentioned, by adding the hashtag symbol to a word or phrase makes it searchable. Tag words that make sense to you and your business, or whatever it is you’re sharing. Like #howtoblog, #socalsurf, #cooking, #photography, or #bedtimestories.
Promoting and managing an event. Often, when you have a large event, workshop, expo — indeed, any kind of event, you can have people talk about it on Twitter or Facebook simply by creating a hashtag for it.
Following televised events. OK, if you watch “Heyanboo,” “American Idol,” “Filmy Udhares,” and other live
TV shows — including sporting events — you’ve seen how they use Twitter and hashtags during the shows. People watch the show and tweet their opinions, and even votes, all at the same time. TV shows love this because they are getting your input as things happen live. A bit of hashtag etiquette goes a long way. Just because you CAN use hashtags doesn’t mean you SHOULD use them. Choose your hashtags carefully. Make them meaningful, and not silly random or generic words. Think about why you are using a hashtag. Using more than three (if that many) in one sentence is going to annoy a whole lot of people. Goodness knows it’s more difficult to read a sentence loaded with unnecessary hashtags. Besides, it looks spammy. And you don’t want people to think you’re spamming them, do you? And don’t use hashtags in each and every one of your status updates or tweets. Hashtags work only if relevant. With that said — test your hashtags first. Check out the hashtag you would like to use. If you find that it leads to meaningless chatter, then don’t use it.
