THE TRUTH ABOUT NUTRITION
The truth about nutrition is always in flux. One day coffee is a carcinogen, the next it’s a potent antioxidant. Carbs used to be the devil, now (the right kinds) are the staple of a well-balanced diet.
Juggling friends, family and work commitments often leaves partners struggling to find time for each other. Check out these tips for a bit of help putting ‘couple time’ back on the agenda.

f you’re trying to live your healthiest life, eating clean, working out and making sure you take preventative measures against the illnesses women commonly face are all likely on your radar. But do you remember to do the small things, too? Those tiny, seemingly unimportant actions, like taking a real lunch break, grabbing coffee with a friend or planning a do-nothing day, can actually have a huge impact on your mental, and even physical, health. Keeping that in mind, self-care isn’t selfish or shallow; it’s a really important part of a healthy lifestyle. (This is especially true for women, who often put everyone else’s needs before their own!) With that in mind, here are inexpensive and easy things you can do to put yourself first.
SHOWER TH OR UR BA 1. MA Make your bath or shower KE YO TT that much MUCH BE ER THATbetter
Turn your nightly shower into an aromatherapy session by using an easy-tomake bath or shower bomb (try lavender, jasmine or ylang ylang for relaxation and peppermint, citrus or rosemary for an energy boost).
2. Treat yourself
TREAT YOURSELF
It is important to do something for yourself, for no other reason than you want to, even if it’s just once in a while. So consider this permission to have that Kanamadhu cake!
3. Stay hydrated HYDRATED STAY
Don’t forget your H2O! If you need some help in the hydration department, try adding citrus fruits, mint or cucumbers for a flavor boost. Also worth a try: finding a fun eco-friendly water bottle that you love.

7. Go outside GO OUTSIDE There are serious wellness benefits to getting out of the house or office. In fact, spending time in nature has been part of the Japanese government’s preventative health strategy since the 80s. And there’s science behind it: study found that spending time in nature leads to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, lower blood pressure and a lower pulse rate.
8.SET SetSCR screen timeLIMI limits—for EEN TIME TS—FOR yourself YOURSELF We love our smartphones, tablets and laptops, too… but binge-watching the hottest new show or scrolling through emails before bed can impact your sleep, and researchers are starting to look at the ways social media can impact your mental health. Researchers believe cuddling with a pet has real mental health benefits. Low serotonin levels have been linked to depression, and petting an animal prompts your body to release this hormone. It can feel rude to unfollow people on Facebook or Twitter, but if you’re constantly cringing at friends’ too-candid updates, or you disagree with their political or religious posts, or you don’t actually like them, it may be time to clean up your friends list. And it doesn’t have to be a major statement—both Facebook and Twitter allow you to stop seeing someone’s updates without actually severing your connection.
14. Bake BAsomething KE SOME

There’s something meditative about the act of baking—you have to measure the ingredients precisely and combine them in just the right order, and at the end, you’re rewarded with a positive result: a sweet treat!
GET ORGANIZED
15. Get organized
If you’re feeling stressed out but you’re not sure why, the culprit might be surprisingly close to home. Actually, it might be your home. Clutter isn’t often discussed as a source of stress, but it can make us feel anxious, overwhelmed and embarrassed. Don’t feel like you have to whip your entire house into shape at once, though. Start by tackling small corners of your space—your cluttered home office or overflowing front closet. You’ll find peace in the order and cleanliness, we promise. WRITE IT OUT
Jotting down your thoughts and impressions about stressful, emotional or even traumatic experiences can actually help you overcome those events.
17. Try breathing exercises TRY BREATHING EXERCISES
Meditation, and recently popular mindfulness, has lots of health benefits— including reducing anxiety and depression and lowering blood pressure and increased quality of life. But if you find the idea of meditating a little intimidating, there’s good news: simply breathing deeply can have a similarly positive impact, reducing your heart rate and blood pressure, relieving stress and even boosting productivity. LAUGH
“Laughter is the best medicine” isn’t just a pithy saying. It can instantly put you in a better mood. Find a funny movie, TV show or stand-up comedian and have the first, and last laugh. GH SLEEP 19. GetGE enough T ENOUsleep
Don’t cheat yourself out of one of the most important things you can do for your health! Skimping on sleep can lead to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and obesity. So make sure you’re getting enough shut-eye—and don’t feel bad about taking a quick cat nap if you’re not.

MEET Myke ! THE MODEL TURNED MAKE-UP ARTIST
I
n recent years, both women and men have become more conscious about their looks. This in turn has created a remarkable rise in the beauty field within the country. Despite the surge in the number of salons, beauty products, hair stylists and make-up artists; there are few individuals who are breaking stereotypes and making a difference. Meekail, or popularly known as Myke is one of the few male make-up artists within a rapidly
growing field that is dominated by women. Myke was first seen on the runway of Bride Maldives and has now moved on to become one of the most sought after make-up artists in the country. Myke’s infectious positive energy and dedication to being a true artist can be instantly seen from his various works. We sat down with him to talk about how he got into his field and find out more about his upcoming projects.
21
DESIGNER
You started off as a model. What made you want to work backstage as a make-up artist? Yes, I was a model, people have always suggested I do it since I am tall so I took the opportunity when I got selected to walk for Bride Designer’s week in 2011. But modeling was not what I wanted as a career, fashion is. Everything about fashion is impressive. Apart from modeling I did various other things such as choreographing ramp walks, photographing and fashion designing. That’s where it all began and make-up is where I ended up with.
Did you learn make-up artistry yourself ? Or from an institute? Back in 2012, I heard that there was a Japanese hairstylist, Mayu Kabashima coming to teach a course for 6 months on hair, make-up and beauty. I grabbed the chance and did it; it was almost like working since I spent eight hours a day at class where we learnt the theory and practical of hair styles, make-up and beauty. In my opinion, it is the best course conducted in the Maldives so far. So I would not say that I studied from a huge institute, but I learnt the basics from the classes conducted by Mayu at Uxani Salon that year.
Would you say that you have a guru? From whom you learnt special skills, principles or disciplines from? I like to follow trends and various styles or techniques that I have learnt have been picked up from social media websites such as Instagram and You Tube. If I am to say something about discipline, I’d say that I’ll always follow my mentor Mayu Kabashima. She not only taught me how to work in this field, she taught me manners and customer services as well - for which I am very grateful for.

There has been a surge of makeup artists lately in the Maldives. What do you think makes you different from the rest? Make-up artists in the Maldives are very talented. I saw most of them work recently at a two-day course by Artilla Academy of Hair Artistry. What I noticed is despite the lack of products and education available in this field, we’ve been doing as good as international make-up artists and hair stylists. And as for what differs me from the rest is from the point where I choose to enhance the unique features of every individual client. I’m known amongst people for my no make-up looks, because less is always beautiful in my opinion.
We heard that you won ‘Best Hair & Make-up’ at the Artilla Academy of Hair Artistry course. How was the experience? Yes, I did. It took me by surprise when I was called upon the stage to receive my prize for best hair and make-up. I created a look that was a mix of vintage and modern styles. But I also made sure that I followed hair stylist Jamila Paul’s instructions and added a touch of my own to my look which I presented at the course. I am looking forward to flying to Dubai, to take part in the Dubai fashion week. It was an honor to learn from Jamila Paul, she is one of the best in the industry and I also got the offer to get trained under her before heading off to do make-up and hair at the fashion week.

What motivates you to do what you do every day? And what are the struggles you face in your field? Well, at this point I would like to say that I am grateful for what I’m blessed with, Alhamdulillah. My friends motivate me every day; they push me to be who I am right now. Especially my colleagues who seek more knowledge, makes me want to grow as an artist as well. My view? New trends, let’s try that. New techniques, let’s do that - and that’s inspiring! For me, struggles determine me to achieve more. I have never been a person to take the easy road; instead I prefer the rough paths because that makes every achievement worthwhile. I have faced lots of criticism and have come across people who still think that this industry is for women only. I understand that women know how other women want their hair or make-up done; but internationally men are also dominant in this industry so clearly this is not a genderspecific field.
Your work has been featured on different platforms. Is there any work that you are proud of so far? Yes. Each and every happy and satisfied customer is a work I have done well and that is what I am proud of. My main motive has always been to send off a customer who is happy with my work and glad to have chosen me.
Would you say you have a certain style? Or is there a certain direction you want to go to when it comes to make-up artistry? I do have a certain style as I had mentioned before. But I hope to do more of high-end makeups and hair styles for conceptual fashion shows.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Well, I would say that I am looking forward to working with international models at international fashion shows. And I hope that one day I will be well known internationally; not just as a make-up artist but as a hair stylist as well. Because I actually enjoy hair styling more than doing make-up.
Being a make-up artist is a tough and demanding job and you have to deal with different kinds of people. What is the one thing you don’t want your clients to ask you? Or what is the common misconception that most clients have about a make-up artist? The clients I have had so far always shared mutual ideas which is a reason for why I have never come across any situation where my clients have been dissatisfied with the service I have provided. At least, no occurrence that I know of yet. Well, the one common misconception I have heard is “Can a man actually pull this off ?” or “Can he do this well?” I think these would be it.
25
DESIGNER
Any exciting projects that you hope to share with the readers? Why of course! There are projects I am working on, but, I would rather let all the readers be curious for now, and surprise them when it is out.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring make-up artist? There is one thing I have always wanted to say, whoever wants to work in this field or any other. “We all make mistakes; we all have struggles, and even regret things we have done in our past. However, you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and your past does not define you. You have the power to shape your future and your destiny.

Juggling friends, family and work commitments often leaves partners struggling to find time for each other. Check out these tips for a bit of help putting ‘couple time’ back on the agenda.
Finding Time for Each Other
Article by : Riyala
Avoid putting too Don’t take your partner’s need much pressure on your partner. for ‘me’ time as rejection. 01
As relationships develop it’s normal for couples who once spent all their time together to feel a need to carve out some independence for themselves.
36 VIBE | ISSUE 13 - 2017 vibetrends.com
02
It’s unlikely you’ll both always want the same amount of individual and together time – sometimes balancing the two can be tricky.
Reminisce together on the happy times you spent in those early days.
03
It’ll remind you just why you fell in love and help you think of ways to recreate some of those special fuzzy moments.
08
Develop time management skills. If you want to spend time with your partner, but just can’t find enough hours in the day try to follow these four steps: Plan ahead – 10 minutes spent thinking about how to maximize your time over the day can save you hours. Delegate – if someone can do something for you that will create time for your relationship, let them. It could be as simple as getting the kids to wash up after dinner. Say no – simple, but effective. Cut back – you may enjoy them all but too many activities can put your relationship at risk, pick only the most important.
Do some homebuilding. Try to commit to at least an hour of ‘couple’ time each week.
Don’t bring up the negatives
06
04
That’s time without children, friends or family members, when the focus is solely on each other. Put it in the diary and let it be a time you both look forward to. Couple time should be a high priority event that doesn’t get trumped for anything less than an emergency. 05
Find a babysitter. Or if the budget won’t stretch to one, put the kids to bed and schedule an ‘at-home’ date night for a little later in the evening.
09
They might sound horribly like chores, but decorating, gardening, cooking a meal, or doing the food shopping together can actually build intimacy – and it gets things done in half the time!
in your relationship on a date night – there’s no quicker way to kill the mood and leave you feeling disconnected. If there are burning issues that need to be addressed save them for a scheduled catch up where the point is to focus on overcoming any obstacles in your relationship.
Celebrate anniversaries 07
and significant dates. They’re an opportunity to look at how you’ve grown both as individuals and as a couple, and remind you of the things that first brought you together. Try to do something special for your partner on these occasions; you don’t need to spend money, just think of something that’ll put a smile on their face.

MUNA HUSSAIN WONDER WOMAN OF MALDIVES Article by : Angel Photo by : DhiExplorer

“
A humble and courageous personal trainer native to our scattered island nation, Muna has dared to summit Mount Lobuche of the Himalayas; becoming the first Maldivian woman to have trekked this high in history.
T
he conditions one faces while trekking the Himalayan mountain range are intimidating; and keeps getting harsher as they ascend – marked by inclement weather conditions and diminishing oxygen levels. Fathimath Muna Hussein has accomplished what would otherwise be an unimaginable feat from a Maldivian - living in one of the flattest countries on Earth.
“I believe that any Maldivian woman can do what I have done, it is possible!” Muna confidently maintains “I had a tough time because my body was going through a lot of changes and I lost my appetite as we kept ascending - that was the most challenging part”. 41
PEOPLE
Muna’s day job as a personal trainer at Heat Health & Fitness requires her to be constantly active, but she recalls her summit to Lobuche as one of the most physically and mentally grueling experiences, she has ever had. Although she has had some experience climbing and trekking before (having climbed Adam’s peak and World’s End, namely) – nothing compared to what she faced at Lobuche. At 6,119 meters above sea level, Mount Lobuche, to the eastern Himalayas of Nepal, is also the second base camp to the highest peak of the world, Mount Everest. Her mountain adventure began from the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu where she stocked on gear needed for the venture. Muna reflects on the moment she nervously embarked a flight to the infamously dangerous Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla – the gateway to Mount Everest. The airport’s small landing strip is perched on a steep cliff and they have no radar system. The erratic weather and outdated communication systems have caused deadly crashes for years. From Lukla the route to the mountain’s summit takes around three weeks, making for a daily climb and trekking time of seven or eight hours. As they ascend oxygen levels drop to just forty percent, with numb fingers and toes to weave through uneven mountain surfaces, the climbers caress slippery slopes whilst carrying heavy backpacks. The now highly commercialized route to Mount Everest has not only accumulated much waste over the years, it has also become a graveyard of frozen corpses. Many have perished en route

since the first ascent in 1953. The risky nature of this feat did not deter Muna; in fact, having not read much prior to her venture, she had to put a great amount of trust in herself and her highly experienced co-trekkers from DhiExplorer Inthi, Zaeem, Ushafath, and their local guide Ang. She learned a lot about mountaineering from them. As the only Maldivians to have ascended such an altitude, the four quickly became like family looking out for each other while they made their way on the icy Lobuche.
“ They would constantly ask me if I was drinking enough water ” “They would constantly ask me if I was drinking enough water”, says Muna. Trekkers must drink at least four liters to stay hydrated in the cold and dry conditions.

“Zaimbe, Usha and Inthi took care of me when I fell sick. I was not eating well because of the altitude changes. And because it’s important to eat a good amount of carbs before trekking, they would encourage me to have my food. They would try to make the meal times enjoyable and would sit together telling jokes and sharing stories for hours. They were like brothers to me and I would not have made the summit if it was not for them” Muna added as she began to tear recalling the experience.
Albeit the exhaustion caused by changes in oxygen levels and the continuous trekking; the grim ordeal was smoothened by the scenery.
“ I love to travel and explore. Even though we would trek for hours every day, it never seemed like it took as long because I loved the picturesque view of flowing rivers and yaks passing by ”.

“I love to travel and explore. Even though we would trek for hours every day, it never seemed like it took as long because I loved the picturesque view of flowing rivers and yaks passing by”. To complete such a physically and mentally strenuous task, Muna – with her background in fitness – suggests that anyone who intends on taking this challenge must take at least six months of physical training.
“The back and legs must be strong”, says Muna. “ You have to do a lot of running, sprinting. And not just light jogging. I was doing a lot of workouts that focused on strengthening the back and even trained with a 10kg backpack”, she added. According to Muna going up the mountain for thirty minutes was tougher than running ten to twelve consecutive rounds around Malé.

Some people have a long list for this while others don’t. Many find it inspiring to listen to people talk about what keeps them grounded and going. Up on completion of her studies in Music she returned back home with hopes of grasping in the scene. Her first public exposure would be Raagu show by TVM (2014). Raagu is an amazing platform for young talented individuals to outshine. This enabled her to find more reasons to do what she loves doing.
‘That was such an experience. I was SO nervous. But I knew I wanted to do it too! That was my first time out there doing what I’ve really wanted to do. Gave me the chills but it felt so nice at the end! Raagu was that extra little push which I needed. I know I made the right choice now. And it’s fun looking back into those days too!’ Growing up listening to all sorts of crazy and lovely; she found her comfort zone in acoustic music. As she kept getting better at it, Shau found her love for acoustic growing fonder day by day. Usually takes delight in song-writing while traveling as the nature and her surrounding keeps her enthused. Her fondest musical memories are with her band mates. How ambitious and engrossed they are keeps her going too. They are the most important influences all
throughout her career and they never fail to keep her inspired and moving forward.
‘I see how passionate they are. I see that every day. It’s such a pleasing reminder! I get to witness what hard work and having a good time is like; both, together. I feel very fortunate for that!’ Mistakes are a part of life and Shau elucidates how she deals with it. Maybe it comes too often that it can be a bug but it’s all about how one overcomes the situation. As a performer, Shau used to be the kind of girl who would get edgy and go on a last-minute- panic; which of course is very common within so many of us! But she also stresses on how vital it is to practice and to never give up - which helped her to get where she is right now.
‘A lot of stage fright! Heck loads of it! But trust me, it gets better! Time heals! Ha-ha!’
“
Passion for music keeps me driven.
“
‘ I picked up the guitar and started playing during my teens. Cousins and friends were great influence on this! I started learning day by day and eventually started singing a little too. I won’t deny - I must’ve been a little bit shy at first but I am definitely a proud bedroom singer! I would sit inside my bedroom, play some tunes for myself and sing along. It soon became an everyday habit. It’s something very personal to me. It’s a way of letting out a lot too, honestly. In time, I was able to gather my comfort zone as well. I’ve been inspired and embolden by too many brilliant people and I am forever grateful for that! ’
Effortlessly, she says it simple and clear.

It’s common among most musicians to say that finding the balance between work life and personal life gets a bit too tricky and challenging at times. Considering the music scene here in the Maldives, it surely doesn’t sound most appealing to many as musicians are expected to be travelling up and down quite frequently.
‘It’s not an easy job. It is definitely not an easy job at all. Sleep cycle gets a little messed up at times and travelling during odd hours might not be your most favorite thing to do every day… but I really like it. I love my job! I mean, I’m still learning to find that balance we’re talking about. It can get a little bit thorny at times but it makes you appreciate the smaller things in life.’

Despite helplessly falling in love with her job every day now; Shau had other dreams as a kid. Her ultimate goal back then was to become a nurse and to be able to lend a helping hand.
‘Funny thing is I never had any interest in anything medical growing up, but I’ve always wanted to become a nurse as a kid. Sometimes, I wonder where I’d be today if things were different. High chances that I could’ve been a bit involved in the business field as its still at the back of my mind although I am a performer today.’ An animal lover who adulates the nature so much; stirred daily with everything around her. Both good and the bad. Taking the most out of every moment is what she strives to do in life. Regardless of working on a frenzied schedule, Shau manages to find some time to work-out. There must be some great amount of help and kindness she receives from a handful while keeping her cool living the life of a musician at 25. She expresses her gratitude to her very favorite people with sincere love.
‘I am so obliged to so many wonderful people! My parents, for the reason behind why I started in the first place. My mentor, for being my first ever musical inspiration. For being the sweetest and most kind-hearted soul. My best-friend, for keeping me inspired and opening my eyes to uncountable many things. My boyfriend, for the support and keeping me grounded. For never fading to give me that little bit of everything I truly need in between. My siblings; who they are my first ever fans. They gave me the courage and shot in the arm I needed. My incredible band mates, for sticking around and never giving up during the hardest of times and sharing the best times together. And a big thank you to VIBE team for this oh-so-amazing opportunity!’

NUTRITION
THE TRUTH about
The truth about nutrition is always in flux. One day coffee is a carcinogen, the next it’s a potent antioxidant. Carbs used to be the devil, now (the right kinds) are the staple of a well-balanced diet.
‘ What’s healthy seems to change regularly, so we’re looking back at the biggest nutrition discoveries.’
IT’S CONFIRMED: SATURATED FAT REALLY IS BAD Butter lovers went bananas when science said saturated fats are healthier than they’ve been made out to be. Update: They aren’t. A second study confirmed that we were actually right all along—and saturated fats are definitely not a superfood. The research found that a reduced intake of saturated fats can lower one’s risk of coronary heart disease, while swapping in unsaturated fats (from good-for-you sources like vegetable-based oils, nuts, seeds, avocados, and seafood) actually works to boost heart health. Luckily, topping your toast with avocado instead of butter isn’t the worst sacrifice.

FATS (SOME) KEEP YOU SLIM
PULSES KEEP WEIGHT OFF
Research found that eating the right type of fat could help keep you at a healthy weight. So go ahead and eat (good) fat to get skinny.
Without making any other efforts to slim down, people who added three-quarters of a cup of pulses (dal, peas, lentils, chickpeas or beans) to their diet every day for lost weight. Eat dal, lentils, beans, lose weight, repeat.
A JAPANESE DIET IS ADVISED That all-you-can eat sushi buffet sounds like a pretty good idea right now. A study found that Japanese people who closely followed their national food guidelines—lots of rice, veggies, fish, meat, and soybean products— had a 15% lower mortality rate than their peers who didn’t adhere as strictly to the classic Japanese diet.
like pulses, starchy veggies, and whole grains instead.
YOU SHOULD WATCH WHAT YOU EATLITERALLY What you see is what you eat. The women who kept packaged foods and sugary drinks on their kitchen counters weighed more than those who didn’t. What’s more, women who had a bowl of fruit out were shown to weigh less than those who didn’t. Expert tip: Keep health-boosting bites within reach and stash splurges far out of sight if you’re trying to stick to a slim-down plan.
IF YOU’RE NUTS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH, EAT THEM CARBS COULD BE LINKED TO SOME CANCERS You don’t have to go cold turkey on carbs, but do know this: A recent study found that a diet high on the glycemic index—that is, one that’s full of refined carbohydrates that cause blood sugar levels to spike—may be associated with a greater risk of lung cancer, even among non-smokers. The good news is that you’d need to eat a lot of the stuff to put yourself in danger. The reality is that no, eating one bagel isn’t as bad for you, however, having one for breakfast several days a week is not a great idea for a number of nutritional reasons. To protect yourself against lung cancer and other chronic diseases linked to dietary choices better opting for healthier carb sources,
Well this is nutty. People who ate a handful of nuts (kanamadhu, cashew, pecans, almonds, peanuts) every day had a lower likelihood of having heart disease than their peers whose diets were nut-free. And that’s not all. Those who regularly noshed on nuts had a lower risk of cancer, as well as a lower risk of premature death.
BE EVEN MORE SPARING WITH SALT Here’s one more reason to skip the chips: your salt intake even the tiniest bit (i.e. by less than a half teaspoon each day) could increase your risk of premature death by 12%. Nix these surprisingly salty foods from your diet, and add flavor to your food with herbs and spices instead.
EAT MORE PLANT PROTEIN TO LIVE LONGER Those who consumed a large quantity of animal protein—especially if they ate more processed red meat than fish or poultry— had a higher risk of premature death than the average person. If that isn’t enough to convince you to pick salmon over sausage, get this: people who ate more plant-based proteins (from foods like breads, cereals, whole grain pastas, beans, nuts, and legumes) had a lower risk of premature death than the average person. To be fair, the link between meat-eating and early death was bolstered by other unhealthy habits, like inadequate physical activity. Still, a diet high in processed meats isn’t advised for anyone. Ditch the sausages and load up on beans instead.

FITNESS
HOW TO STICK TO A WORKOUT PLAN
ONCE AND FOR ALL Faced with a seemingly endless supply of trendy new workouts that all promise a better body and improved health, choosing the best one can seem overwhelming. The single best exercise program is the one that you stick with. The simplest way to do this, of course, is to focus on physical activity that you actually enjoy and avoid anything that you hate (even if Victoria’s Secret model swears by it). But beyond common sense, there are plenty of sciencebacked methods for sticking to an exercise program. If you’ve ever had grand plans of overhauling your fitness routine only to find yourself returning to your couch three weeks later, these techniques are for you.
Believe in yourself Self-efficacy is defined as the belief in one’s ability to succeed in a specific goal or behavior change, much like the “I think I can” motto of the little engine that could. Self-efficacy is, thankfully, not an inborn trait but a learned skill that can be developed through achieving small successes over time. When starting a new exercise program, set yourself up for small wins and celebrate them. Focus on the better night’s sleep you may get after just one workout instead of the weight you hope to lose by the end of the month. Another way to improve self-efficacy is to find a role model you identify with who has achieved her fitness goals. This can vicariously bolster your own self-efficacy.
Shorten your workouts
Make it social
Focusing on shorter bouts of exercise has distinct advantages over longer workouts. In a study among young women who were asked to start an exercise program, those who were assigned to multiple 10-minute workouts throughout the day stayed more committed than women who were asked to complete one continuous workout of up to 40 minutes. In fact, the shorter-bout group logged more total workout time and exercised more days per week compared to the longer workout group. Rest assured: the cumulative effect of exercising in short bouts has the same physical benefits as longer workouts, both in terms of weight loss and overall heart health.
Though it’s not surprising, the dramatic effect of social support on exercise is worth emphasizing. Researchers found that it was highest when it involved a group, like a sports team or a dance group. Dropin fitness classes were associated with slightly lower adherence, but they were still superior to solo, home-based exercise programs. Even if home-based exercise is your only feasible option, you can still harness the power of social support by recruiting a family member or friend to work out with you or harnessing the power of an online community. Some studies even suggest that simply discussing your plans to exercise with a healthcare provider, mentor, or friend can increase your likelihood of following through with it.
64 VIBE | ISSUE 13 - 2017 vibetrends.com
Adopt other healthy habits People who prioritize eating a healthy diet are more likely to be active. The theory is that engaging in one health-promoting behavior tends to inspire others, and although the link is strongest between healthy eating habits and exercise, it’s likely that any healthy behavior — like getting a full night’s sleep or even flossing your teeth — can increase your probability of following through with exercise.
Keep your expectations in check If you expect to see a physical transformation within the first few weeks of starting an exercise program, you may be less likely to keep at it. Those with unrealistic expectations of physical change tended to give up when their hopes were not immediately met. To avoid the “false hope syndrome” remember that noticeable physical changes from a new exercise routine can take months to develop. And if your goal is weight loss, it’s important to know that exercise alone — without dietary changes — typically isn’t enough. What you can expect from exercise, however, are short-term improvements in mood and sleep and, in the long term, a dramatically reduced risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia, and several different types of cancer. How’s that for motivation?

WAYS GREEN TEA IS GOING TO TOTALLY CHANGE YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE
I
n the world of superfoods, green tea is one of the stars.
Green tea has gotten lots of attention for being a great health beverage. It’s packed with antioxidants and nutrients, which have powerful benefits for your overall health and beauty. One of the antioxidants that makes green tea so major has so many promising applications that it is found in literally thousands of scientific studies. And those beauty benefits will have you running for your kettle. Green tea’s antioxidant properties can help protect skin and hair from environmental stressors like pollution, UV rays, and cigarette smoke. Even if you’re a coffee addict, there are multiple ways to harness the power of green tea to give you better skin and hair from the inside and out. Here are a few!
LOOK WIDE AWAKE Dermatologists, facialists, makeup artists all them love this quick trick to boost tired eyes. After briefly dipping green tea bags, cool in the refrigerator, then place under your eyes for five to ten minutes. The idea is that the tea’s caffeine can help get fluids and circulation flowing. Plus, cool temperature is anti-

inflammatory for soothing and calming, helps with swelling and redness. Rinse skin afterward as leaving the liquid on for hours could become irritating.
REFRESH YOUR HAIR You know that feeling when your morning coffee or tea kicks in and you’re like, “woo-hoo!” You can do that for your hair, too. Formulas with green tea extracts help boost the health of your hair and give you a fresh, clean jump-start to your morning. Look for shampoos with green tea extracts.
SPOT-TREAT ACNE Whether you get breakouts on the regular or just the occasional bump, green tea can help blemishes heal faster—and even prevent them in the first place. A study showed that green tea has anti-acne properties. Apply steeped green tea to a pimple-prone region with a cotton ball and rinse off after five minutes—almost like a mini-mask for breakouts.
3
AMP UP YOUR FACE MASK One of the easiest ways to get the antioxidant benefits of green tea on your face is to add the crushed
loose-leafs, or tea flakes from a tea bag to your favorite mask (just wet the bag before cutting it to open) then swirl them in with a dollop of face mask in your palm. Leave the mask on your face for as long as instructed on the label. Don’t have a mask? You can make your own by blending the tea leaves or flakes with honey for an ultra-easy DIY alternative. Bonus benefit: When you wash the mask off by gently rubbing your skin with cool water, the leaves exfoliate your skin.
2
DRINKS YOUR ANTIOXIDANTS The potential health benefits of drinking green tea are countless. The antioxidant has been studied to treat various diseases and may help with brain function, fat loss, and lowering the risk of cancer. Polyphenols are another antioxidant plentiful in green tea and can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protecting our cells from aging and other diseases. Keep your sipping to one or two cups a day as green tea is high in caffeine, which is best consumed in moderation. And which to buy? It’s best to use loose-leaf tea or tea bags that contain loose leaves, which are higher quality and are less processed.
