EDITORS NOTE Dear Readers,

O

ne of the most heartening aspects of my work here at Vibe involves meeting all kinds of ‘fannuverin’ and people who strive to excel in their respective fields. From artists, designers, musicians to athletes and culinary stars - listening and reading about their struggles and successes is what i consider a privilege. For the seventeenth installment of Vibe, we brought together another selection of inspiring individuals who have so much to offer beyond their prodigious talents. One such person is Hawwa Inasha or Kween - the country’s most admired young model agreed to grace our cover. This is Kween’s first cover shoot for a local magazine and we are thrilled to have her as part of Vibe’s growing community. Our tête-à-tête with the stunner promises some revealing insights into her hidden talents and we also find out the meaning behind her famous pseudonym. It is said that some are born talented, but those who harness them and use it for a greater cause or reason is undeniably an admiring trait. Artist Sam’s alluring

We have all heard of the silver-haired beauty aficionado called Justin, after all he is one of the few leading men in a predominantly-female-established field of beauty. Justin has been working tirelessly to launch his eponymous beauty studio and has shot some spectacular looks exclusively with Vibe. As for our Looks section, the latest Summer trends had a great influence in our flat lay. From beach inspired jewelry beaded with shells and pearls to fruity prints and espadrilles, we hope there is something for everyone. The tropical theme continues to this issue’s Recipes as well - an easy-tomake tropical slushy is perhaps the perfect refreshment to cool down with, while you lie under the sun with a Vibe magazine.

PEOPLE

A name that draws attention and a face that demands it.

Who is Kween? Tell us about yourself.

“Oh my god who am I? That is definitely a big question when asked on the spot like that huh? Hmm, okay well, Kween is me obviously, my name is Hawwa Inasha Gayyoom, I turned 18 in Jan of this year, and yes I am quite young. No one really ever thinks I’m only 18 they always assume that I am 20 or older.” What are some of your favorite things in life?

Well originally I actually

thought I would go with Queen with the Q, but I just felt like it was a bit

too ‘serious’ or like I was claiming to be a queen

you know? I just wanted

it to be bit more fun and different

By: Hasko

I

feel like it is a safe bet to say, that if you are on any form of social media in the Maldives, when I say Kween, you can immediately put a face behind the name. I also feel it is not an exaggeration when I say that she has taken over the modeling scene with her striking beauty that has the ability to stop you in your tracks. Her photo shoots and Instagram page have been the talk of the town so to speak and with very good reason. I had the privilege of sitting down and chatting with our cover girl for this issue, Hawwa Inasha Gayyoom or as we all know her by her popular Instagram name; Kween. As I welcomed her into the Vibe office ready to sit down and get to know her, it

was impossible to not compliment her on just how gorgeous she is. She was dressed in a simple long sleeved top and jeans with a bare face. After seeing her in multiple photos with a full face of makeup it was unbelievable how her natural beauty, minus any makeup was even more stunning. Immediately as she got the compliment she smiled and thanked me, seeming shyer than when she entered the room. It was obvious that she was still not used to receiving compliments on her appearance though I am sure that she gets them on a daily basis. As she sat down and got comfortable I wanted to ease her into the interview and start of by asking her to tell us a little bit about herself :

“These days I’ve been prioritizing spending a lot of time with my family and friends specially my mum, because at some point I may leave for my studies. I also like to paint, that’s something a lot of people might not know about me, since I don’t share that aspect of my life on social media, but yea I love painting and graphic design and anything artsy. So yea I guess you could say I love dabbling in art oriented stuff and I adore spending time with my family and loved ones.” I could tell throughout our interview that having to answer questions about herself seemed to be a bit of a challenge for her, but she slowly came out of her shell and more of her personality shone through. Kween was definitely shy but she harnesses a unique ability to switch that off in front of the cameras. Is there any particular reason you chose the name Kween?

“Well originally I actually thought I would go with Queen with the Q, but I just felt like it was a bit too ‘serious’ or like I was claiming to be a queen you know? I just wanted it to be bit more fun and different, so I though why not write it with a ‘Kw’. And I guess the word Kween is sort of self-representative of how I feel as a person, I want to personify the confidence of a queen and I believe that all women should as well.”

I have a few, but one that really

sticks in my mind and that I also try and tell other people is to ‘Live and Let Live’.

Has becoming a model always been

Have you faced any obstacles so far

“Actually modeling for me has always been a hobby. I actually want to become an interior architect, modeling has always been just something I did for fun, and I never really thought it would take me anywhere.”

“Not really, my mum is really supportive and my friends are super supportive. I try and always focus on the positives and not focus on the negatives.”

something that you wanted to do?

Who are some of your inspirations in the international fashion industry?

“Well to say inspiration wouldn’t be the right word for me because I don’t really aspire to be like the models in the international fashion industry, because as I said before, I don’t plan on being a model by profession. But that being said, I do really like the vibe and looks of Rosie Huntington and Bella Hadid as for a hijab model Saufeeya Goodson.” What would you say has been

the highlight of your modeling experience to date?

“Hmm I don’t really know if I have a particular moment in mind, because I really enjoy everything I do in terms of shoots.” Since you have mentioned that you

within regards to modeling?

Q: What are your thoughts on the current fashion/modeling scene in the Maldives? “To be honest I feel like models don’t really have a good platform or enough support to really pursue their careers here. I think that’s definitely one of the reasons why I don’t have goals of pursuing it as a serious career here in the Maldives.” Where do you see your modeling career headed in the future?

“Well if I ever got a massive opportunity on an international platform that I cannot refuse, and if it comes along after I have achieved my goal to become an interior architect, I would definitely take that opportunity. Because no matter what the opportunity is I feel like I would want the extra security of having something to fall back on.” Is there a quote or a saying that you swear by, or try and live your life

“Maybe. I haven’t really thought about it too much because my main goal has always been to become an interior architect and do other art and design related stuff, because that is what I studied. That’s definitely my area.”

After I got through my questions she let out a big sigh of relief and was all smiles. This was her very first official interview given to any publication (print or otherwise.) Kween, you are wonderful and warm individual with such a sweet personality. We hope that you achieve all your goals and never stop modeling, because you definitely have that special something.

R E L AT I O N S H I P

Dear Juliet, Once a Cheat, Always a Cheat? By: Hasko

S

o you’ve been cheated on. It was heartbreaking to the say the least. You were devastated, barely able to eat or crying into a tub full of ice cream. You spend every night watching and re-watching sad, romantic movies and crying yourself to sleep. The whole thing has you feeling insecure, confused and just plain sad that you question the thought of being in a relationship ever again. You also feel so torn; the cheating obviously does not suddenly switch “off ” all the feelings you had for your significant other. You are ultimately left with the question of “should I take him/her back?” or the most common thought “will he/she cheat on me again?” You may be like some people and never want to go back to that, in order to avoid even the slightest risk of it ever happening again. You put your heart in a cage, lock it and throw away the key. Or you may fall

Dear Juliet, My girlfriend cheated on me a few months ago and I broke up with her and we haven’t been together for almost the same amount of time we were in a relationship for which was 6 months. I miss her and want her back but I’m scared it’s too late? Help. - Hameed

Dear Hameed, Ask yourself this and also refer to the useful little list I’ve put up to help you in situations like this. Were you able to gauge if she was remorseful and ready to change when you ended it with her? Or was it because you truly felt she couldn’t? Clearly your heart is telling you, you want to give it another shot. Now listen to your gut, is she worth it? If so it is never too late to try again, although how she feels, only she will know. I hope you get what you want in the end. xx

16 VIBE | issue 17 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

into another group of people who are open to forgiveness and the idea that people make mistakes and can change. Although it might be of ‘unpopular opinion’ I believe that the term “once a cheater always a cheater” is completely false. Research studies show that even among married couples, cheating is relatively common: about 22% of men and 13% of women cheat. According to recent studies, even spouses who describe themselves as “happy” with their marriage have affairs. But the good news is this: Many people who are in committed relationships that have decent chemistry and benefits for both partners can actually work through the crisis of affairs. If you have been cheated on but your heart and most importantly your gut is telling you that you want to give the relationship another shot, then listen to yourself. Give it another go, but do so wisely. I’ve put together a list of things you can keep an eye out for to make sure that your significant other is not a chronic cheater and that your relationship still has hope.

1. True remorse. Your partner is truly remorseful and regrets their choices. When you hear apologies your gut should tell you it is sincere. 2. Zero contact with whomever they cheated with. This one should be obvious, but I felt it still needed a spot on the list. 3. They show you a new sense of appreciation and respect. Hey! You took them back with your massive heart and ability to forgive; it is the least they owe you. 4. More open and honest conversations. You and your partner should be able to talk more openly and honestly about your relationship, find out what went wrong what needs fixing and where do you want to go from this point onwards?

Dear Juliet, My boyfriend of 2 years has suddenly started acting really weird, he keeps getting random calls on his phone which he has to answer in private and he seems very secretive when he gets text messages, could he be cheating? - Shereen

Dear Shereen, Although this may seem like suspicious behavior, do not jump to conclusions. Be frank with him and if you feel like something is up just ask. If he seems reluctant to answer or avoids your questions all together, then your gut might be telling you something. Either that or he is planning to propose to you or planning a birthday party? Men are terrible with surprises. Good luck girl xx

5. Your partner wants an outside perspective. If your partner wants to seek a bit of counseling with or without you, to reflect on the relationship or just focus on themselves and their role in the relationship to better them, this is always a good sign.

JUSTIN

DESIGNER

“I’m just doing what I love and I’m getting paid for it” – Justin

By: Ihusana Thsufeeq

By: Ihsana

I

n recent years, talented, freelance make-up artists and hair-stylists have grown in numbers. But before this became well sought-after, around 10 years ago, Hussain Anees, or as we know him, Justin began his career in the female-dominated beauty industry, as a freelance make-up artist and hair stylist. Setting aside the obvious fact that he is male, Justin was steadfast with his dream and soared high up in the industry.

18 VIBE | issue 17 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

He laid the first stone to pursue his initial dream of becoming a hair stylist straight after he graduated from school. After joining a salon as a receptionist, he slowly began his hairstyle training. But before long, he realized that styling hair was just partial and to achieve the complete transition for his clients, he needed to learn how to put on make-up, and so he jumped into it. Since then, he has been working alongside many local photographers, models, and other artists

and has taken part in many projects. He has also expanded his experience to many international projects and worked with notable influencers in the industry such as Victoria Swarovski, Jacqueline Fernandez and many more. When asked about the difference between working locally and internationally, he said; * * * * * * * *

Photography by: Aishath Zeeshan - Zee (Eutopian) Model : Maiha (vctales)

“For international projects, it’s a bit more exciting because they tend to give me the freedom to do whatever I want. Whereas working with locals, it’s mostly a mixture of what they want and what I can provide. But I’m not complaining! I love the projects I take part in either way.” With whichever type of project he takes, Justin’s consistency in his work is admirable. He remarked that to stay consistent is to follow the trends and to keep studying. To research, find out what comes up, what’s new and what else everyone is doing. Try to improve continuously and not to worry too much about the competition. A boost to this is the pure love and passion for work. As he said;

“I don’t take this job as a job. I’m just doing what I love and I’m getting paid for it.” He further spoke of his inspirations to create new concepts and styles that he initiates;

“I get inspired easily and ideas will just keep flowing. There was this one shoot where I went to Paper World and I saw these transparent dry leaves and I instantly started getting ideas! So I just bought a stack of leaves, went home and created a look where the leaves were growing from the model’s face. And since it was transparent, you could still see the make-up through the leaves. That was one of my favorite shoots. I get inspired by fabrics and how they glow or the color’s transition. Even the streets or a dirty wall can inspire me!” With the beauty industry in the Maldives growing on the double, Justin also believes that it is crucial to teach what you learn to the next generation. True to his word, he has been training future make-up and hair stylists in both Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

19

DESIGNER

“I’ve been taking hair and make-up classes here for a while now. I’ve also taught in Sri Lanka. Like one of my teachers, Cheryl Gooneratne always said, ‘Never hide anything, and just tell them everything you know. That’s how others improve and you don’t have to be scared about another person being better than you. Because there might be a day where a junior, who is good at make-up gets better than I am. So keep learning and keep teaching them everything you know’.” While he is very happy to see new local faces in the industry, Justin advises them to listen to what the others say, whether they are a client, work colleague or critic and to be more openminded;

“Working with people is always fun. But there are people that can be difficult and once you know why they are being that way, it’s easy to work with them.”

“Listen, even though it might seem wrong and try to correct it in your own way without fighting or arguing. When someone is giving you bad criticism, don’t take it in a negative way and try to understand it and accept it in a positive way instead. Working with people is always fun. But there are people that can be

difficult and once you know why they are being that way, it’s easy to work with them. There are a lot of people who have had a bad experience with make-up and more so there is always a reason why they don’t trust people to maybe come and touch their faces. It’s something to think about. People always have a reason why they behave in a certain

way. It’s good to be nice to people instead of being judgmental just because it doesn’t align with the way you think.” With his exposure and know-how of around ten years, he is now looking forward to embarking on his new venture – opening his studio ‘Jay Beauty Studio’ ( JBS). When asked about the studio, he said;

21

DESIGNER

“Never hide anything, and just tell them everything you know. That’s how others improve and you don’t have to be scared about another person being better than you.” - Cheryl Gooneratne

“I think I should’ve opened it about two years ago, I’m a bit late. (haha) But, I think it’s about time that I expand my business. Opening a place will really help me give additional services, like nails that you cannot be taken from door to door in convenience. I’m creating something different compared to the other salons and all the new exciting cafés I’ve seen, where everyone is going very artistic and modern. So instead, I looked back into history and I’m creating a studio that follows an old French style. And I’m not calling it a salon because I’m not going to provide services like facials, pedicure, and manicure. It’s only for make-up, hair styling, hijab styling and nails. But when you say studio, most people initially think maybe photography or something, but there are art studios and make-up is considered art. So I called it a studio and I plan to give my best services, as best as I can.”

22 VIBE | issue 17 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

The studio is open for services now and we are all very excited for him! He plans to restrict his work to the clients he receives at his studio but is willing to take on a few freelance jobs and international jobs as well. But it doesn’t stop here. He has further plans to achieve his ultimate goal which is to go international and to be recognized internationally. He believes that, what he has done internationally till now are small projects and he wants to be known globally for his talents as a make-up artist and hairstylist. With that note, he concludes by mentioning the people he is thankful for being supportive and helping him flourish in the industry;

Photography by: Aishath Zeeshan - Zee (Eutopian) Model : Maiha (vctales)

“I would like to thank my family. My dad obviously wasn’t too happy about it at first, since he wanted me to be a businessman like him. But then, he also gave me the chance to prove myself, to show him that I can do this and I did prove to him, and he is quite proud of me now. My grandmother - she supported me from the very first moment that I told her that I wanted to do this. My family was really supportive and so were my friends in Sri Lanka and other friends abroad who helped me, who believed me and advised me to go forth and just do what I love.” Before we bring down the curtain, we would like to congratulate and wish Justin the very best with his studio; Jay Beauty Studio where, with his expertise and capability, we don’t doubt will be of excellent service, standard, and quality.

The “Fast & Furious” spin-off will be a team-up between Dwayne Johnson’s Agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard

“The Angry Birds Movie” slingshot to nearly $350 million in worldwide box office and launched a global movie brand.

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, IT CHAPTER TWO brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

The film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.

James Cameron and Tim Miller are treating the new movie as a direct sequel to Cameron’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” “We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron said. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough.

Artist Sam asks you to stop for a moment and look around By: Angel Shujau

34 VIBE | issue 17 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

In an age where we are bombarded with a plethora of visuals everywhere we look, click or swipe, artist Sam’s Instagram page gives a respite from the chaos. Her refreshing aesthetics laid out in the grid consists of acrylic paintings of waves laced with white foam or water colored, dream-like turtles gliding in the ocean with specs of gold foil. Being a Maldivian and living in the country means coming across thousands of underwater and ocean images - yet, her paintings seem to have a déjà vu effect, recalling the first time we experienced the salty ocean or spotted a turtle. Samiyya or Sam as she is fondly known, does not remember a time she did not paint. Art plays an integral part in her life. After exhibiting her pieces at ‘Unveiling Visions’ exhibition held in 2017 by NGO Maldivian Artist Community (MAC), Sam stepped into the field as a professional artist.

.. never give up, don’t compare yourself to others and always keep trying. In a country like this it would be difficult to get your name out there as a creative person or even have your work valued ..

What inspires your paintings ? Majority of my work is mostly inspired by my surroundings, nature and particularly the beautiful ocean surrounding this tropical country. Sometimes we forget to just stop for a moment and look around, see the beauty of creation and cherish it. I like to preserve those feelings and nature’s colors I see around me. But since everything is slowly fading away because of our actions, I started to focus more on spreading awareness that we are indeed close to ruining our biggest blessing that we are dependent on, which is the ocean.

The photos from your solo exhibition “Ocean Eyes” held at Lecute’s store in Male’ city was shared everywhere on Instagram and other social media platforms. Where else has your work been exhibited so far? My work was exhibited at the ‘Unveiling Visions’ exhibition held in 2017 and 2018 as well. I have exhibited my work at ‘Fannugedharin’ festival in 2018, and took part in the art festival held at Hulhumale’. One of my second largest work was exhibited at Kandima Island Resort for their annual ‘Kula’ festival with several other amazing artists as well, and it is still currently on display at their art studio for anyone to view or purchase. Some of my work has been displayed at cafés as well. Some of them are at Oevaru Art gallery and Modus Operandi, where I did a mural for them as well.

You often use acrylics on canvas to create paintings, would you say that it is your most preferred medium (or are there other mediums you lean towards more) and why? I personally prefer oil paint on wood as my main medium, but it is very difficult to find good quality oils and the paint thinners in the Maldives. The cheapest available is acrylics so I tend to use more of acrylics on larger pieces. Oil paint is the easiest to use compared to acrylics cause of the smooth blending properties and the slow drying time.

What are the challenges you face as an artist in the Maldives? As I have mentioned before, finding the proper, good quality supplies is one of the biggest challenges here. If we are to get any, we would have to order online for an insane amount of money. And since art is not very valued here in the Maldives, people don’t find it interesting or even important to support local artists and crafters. Not to mention us artists of all kinds don’t have a proper place to exhibit our work for the world to see. The national Art gallery doesn’t live up to it’s name and is used for other functions as a rental space. Art is very undervalued here in a country which used to be so rich in art long ago.

Could you tell us a little bit about your ongoing projects? At the moment I am preparing for ‘Unveiling Visions’ 2019, aiming to create something very different from what I normally make. And I am planning to hold another solo exhibition too as well!

Do you have any advice for other creatives? My biggest advice would be, to never give up, don’t compare yourself to others and always keep trying. In a country like this it would be difficult to get your name out there as a creative person or even have your work valued. You will see greater artists out there but that doesn’t mean you are bad at it. They were at your spot before they got to that point. Have passion, never give up and keep practicing every second you get. Sketch all the time and fill a hundred books of them. There is no good or bad artist when you create art. Keep doing what you love to do and chase your dreams

Being a professional artist in the Maldives is often frowned upon by society. Why did you choose to become one and how do you think you can change this stereotype? That is one of my biggest aims as a local artist. I chose to become an artist because it’s who I am. It is not just a hobby or a way of earning or even a career. And I believe all of us artists should do as much as we can to spread awareness that having professional artists in this country is something for us to be proud of. And being one should not be considered as a failure. All the restaurants, café’s, clothing, music, decorations around your house and the games you play on your phone would not be possible if it wasn’t for artists. I want to make people aware of this and to appreciate it.

ere’s the thing about Bruschetta: It can be a snack. It can be an appetizer. It can be a salad. It can even be a main course if the whole “Where’s the Beef ?” thing isn’t an issue for you. Either way, it’s divine. And it’s so very, very easy to make. The balsamic vinegar gives it a little bite. Dried basil can be substituted but it is best with fresh.

40 VIBE | issue 17 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

INGREDIENTS

a. 6 big ripe tomatoes, chopped b. 3 cloves minced garlic c. 1 tablespoon olive oil d. 2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar e. 6-8 fresh basil leaves f. 1/4 teaspoon salt g. 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper h. 1 French baguette

SERVES: 2 PREPARATION: 30 min METHOD Preheat the oven. The baguette slices will toast best in the top rack of your oven, so you may need to work in batches to toast them all. a. In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, basil, salt and pepper. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes or longer. Note, tomatoes love salt; you may need to add more than you expect. b. Cut the baguette into 3/4-inch slices. When the oven has reached 230°C on a baking sheet place the slices in the oven on the top rack and toast for 5 to 6 minutes until lightly browned around the edges (or you can brown slices in butter in a skillet also) c. Serve the toasted bread on a platter, olive oil side facing up (the olive oil will help create a temporary barrier keeping the bread from getting soggy from the chopped tomatoes).

HOW TO GET FIT AT YOUR DESK Chained to your desk? Don’t despair if you can’t work out as much as you’d like – there are other ways to burn calories and work muscles!

Scientists can rave about how bad sitting is for the body but, when you’ve got a desk job and you simply have to sit for hours and hope for the best. But you don’t have to leave your health in the hands of fate. While you’re not going to blitz as many calories sitting as you may crush doing a HIIT workout, there are plenty of sneaky ways to burn fat, boost blood flow and tone muscles without leaving the office. So follow these rules to undo some of the negative effects that long hours spent parked at the desk may have on your body.

FIDGET Tap your feet. Drum your fingers on the desk. Life’s fidgets have been found to be naturally-born slim bods. Those who fidgeted, stood up and walked around intermittently could burn an additional 300 calories per day compared to those who sat still. The take-home message is that lots of small bouts of activity – wiggling in your chair, swinging your legs – can have as great a calorie-burning effect as one large bout of exercise. Gently wiggle your spine or circle your pelvis in the chair to keep your back mobile, not to mention working muscles in the trunk and buttocks.

SQUEEZE You may not be able to see them but you will notice the benefits of working your pelvic floor muscles. Not only do the deep core muscles play a role in reducing incontinence and improving sexual health, but they also help with core stabilization as well as lessening hip and back pain.

42 VIBE | issue 17 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

Unfortunately sitting in a slumped position or with back support can decrease the amount of pelvic floor muscle activation, which could weaken the core muscle group. Why not work the muscles instead? It’s easy to exercise the pelvic floor group discreetly – simply, squeeze the muscles while sitting in your chair.

LAUGH The workplace may be one of the last places you expect to have a laugh but, actually, having a sense of humor can be key to success. Those who have more fun in the office take fewer sick days, work harder and are more productive. And what’s more laughing for just 10-15 minutes per day can boost your body’s energy burn by an impressive 40 calories. Laugh for 40-60 minutes daily and you’ve blitzed a whopping 160 calories. Experts surmise that laughter increases both the heart rate and body’s movement, which results in up to a 20 percent increase in calorie expenditure. Try starting each day or work meeting with a funny quote to up your giggle count.

SWITCH Want to cram some sneaky core exercise into your work day? Lose the office chair and switch it for a stability ball. Sitting on a chair makes your abs switch off, as you slouch towards the desk. But sitting on a moveable platform, such as a stability ball, will encourage you to use good posture, which could work the core and help to prevent back problems. Research shows that it increases trunk motion by 66 percent, which means your muscles spend more time working and less time being inactive while you’re sat at your desk.

RISE Don’t just sit there! For good health need to stand two to four hours each day. Fortunately, you don’t need to leave the office to reap the rewards of getting out of your seat. Our bodies instinctively know how and when to stretch, so listen to your body and move away from your desk every 20-30 minutes. So set your watch by it! Research has shown that standing up for two minutes 16 times a day will help to maintain muscle and bone density. If you want to use energy and activate muscles, do some discreet exercises like balancing on one foot or doing calf raises while making the tea. And stretching helps, too. Standing up and bending backwards is also a great way to alleviate the effects of prolonged sitting.

Saina’s Undying Devotion By: Ihusana

A

seventeen year old girl, with courage and a mindset well beyond her years - meet Aminath Saina Mohamed Rasheed who everyone knows as the first runner-up for the Maldivian Idol Season 3. Like many, we sat with Saina oblivious to the silent battle she fought during and after her Maldivian Idol journey. But impressed and encouraged by her optimistic words, we are about to reveal the hardships that were well hidden while we watched her through our screens and her inspiring attitude towards her life.

You have taken part in many madhaha (religious hymns) and singing competitions and you have even won a few of them. Can you tell us, how and why did you pursue this genre at such a young age and singing so young? I was five years old when I first started. I participated in an Inter-class singing competition, and I actually won! After that, everyone tried to make me take part in singing competitions. But I didn’t take it seriously since I was unaware that I can actually sing well! Later on, when I was in grade three, I took part in a competition called VTV School Icon and received 1st place in my age category; Under 9, and I got 3rd place in the whole competition. That was the first real competition I participated in and I have been taking part in singing and madhaha competitions ever since then, throughout my school years.

Why did you decide to compete in Maldivian Idol? When the 1st season started, I watched all the episodes and I was really intrigued by it. But I never thought about participating myself because I’m very emotional, so I doubted that I would be able to control myself if something were to happen. Also, I have a very low selfconfidence so without my family; my support team, I didn’t think I would be able to bear the stress, especially since I would be at the receiving end of a lot of criticism. But after the second season, my friends, boyfriend, and family really tried to convince me to take part in it. Then, it was my mom that persuaded me to send the SMS to join the auditions. I got really good feedback from the judges in the first and second audition, but when I got the chance to back out, I wavered since I was very nervous. But I had so much support, more than I thought, and I got the golden mike, which really built my confidence. That was the point that I actually decided that I wanted to continue in the competition.

I’m assuming you got a lot of opportunities after Maldivian Idol. What was the most incredible or amazing opportunity you got?

Right after the competition, there was a celebration on my island, so I went to Addu. That was during Ramadan and I got a lot of calls to take part in shows, interviews and to perform but I was unable to fly to Male’ and later on I had to fly to Sri Lanka. It was so sad because I was worried about what people would think! But there was nothing I could do and I was feeling so bad and guilty because I felt like I was losing everything that I gained and I was letting my fans down. I didn’t do a single cover, gig or an interview while the others were doing so much. Then, someone reached out to me with the opportunity to represent the Maldives in China for the event; Silk Road & Young Dreams, and I agreed! In the event, there were 26 participants from 25 countries. I sang ‘Envaguvee’ and the feedback was amazing, they loved our language. I was really surprised when I got called out to receive the 2nd place in that competition and it was so important to me because I was feeling really upset about not being able to join in any activities in Malé.

I N S P I R AT I O N

Why were you unable to accept any activities in Malé after Maldivian Idol? It was because of my health condition. Right after the 1st audition of Maldivian Idol, I had a fever for 15 days and no remedy seemed to work. Nobody knew what was wrong with me since there were no signs showing that I was sick on the outside. So after the Theatre Round, I came back to Male’ and traveled to Sri Lanka the very next day. They did a blood test and we found out that I had Dengue for more than a month and the hospitals in Male’ were unable to detect it. They said that if I was even a bit late, it would’ve been life-threatening. I never initially had SLE (Systemic lupus erythematosus), but now I do. The days that I spent admitted in the Sri Lanka hospital were the days that all the top 16 participants were practicing so I would do mine on the phone sometimes. After coming back to Malé, there was also a problem with the dose I got and I had to cancel my practices again. After Idol, I went back to Sri Lanka and while I was there, I found out that a parasite called Amebiasis was living in my stomach, later I had Gallstones and then gastritis. They found out that because of gastritis, there was scarring at the end of my intestine and the steroids I was on for SLE lead to gastritis. Because there were so many problems, the doctors were unable to give me any more medicine. Now gastritis is my friend! It’s always there. The last time I got a cold and consulted a doctor, they recommended me to remove my tonsils since they are in the 3rd stage. Last year was one hell of a ride.

4. 5. What is your next move?

6.

I’m not working on anything right now but I am currently studying. My dream was to become a doctor, ever since I can remember. But I had to let go of that dream because of my health condition. So, I started to work for my second dream, which is to become a diplomat. I consulted my teachers and my family and now I’m studying International Relations at MNU. Regarding my music career though, I have to remove my tonsils first to continue singing. So I’m just going to perform in the already booked events and hopefully remove my tonsils in April.

Do you plan to publish your own songs or albums? I actually have a song that I made myself. I even gave it to Theyra Sir to check, fix the lyrics and music a little. Only Shalabee has heard it and I’m not really confident whether I should publish it or not. But I keep thinking that I want to contribute something to the music industry in the Maldives, so maybe, I might publish it this year? Also, I am planning to work on a duet together with Shalabee where we will be making a cover of a Pakistan song and that would be the first cover I would release.

What would you say your ultimate goal is?

7.

I want to make my parents proud and make them feel that the sacrifices they made by moving here were not in vain. I want to become the best at what I am studying right now. And when it comes to singing, I want to reach Bollywood! Because people say my voice is classical and I think Bollywood would fit my voice than any other genre. I love Hindi songs and their music and I think I can sing them well.

8.

Since you were 16 when you took part in such a big competition and you got 2nd place, what advice do you have for anyone especially for the younger generation when it comes to following their dream? To the people who have low self-confidence, I would like to say that unless you try, you wouldn’t know how it goes. People might criticize before you even try something! You might even start believing in them and fear that you would fail. But I don’t think it’s a problem to fail. Try what you fear and if you fail, you will know why you failed and you’d be able to work on that. Also, age doesn’t matter and you should believe in yourself even though it might be hard. Build your self-confidence and surround yourself with good people who want good for you. And, always keep a second option. Since I couldn’t become a doctor, I’ve decided to become a diplomat. And who knows, maybe this might be better for me than becoming a doctor? Sometimes things don’t go the way we plan.

9. I want to reach Bollywood! Because people say my voice is classical and I think Bollywood would fit my voice than any other genre.

Anything you would like to add? I would like to thank my first ever mentor; that believed that I can sing and made me believe in myself Shafeeq sir. The entire JS management, who were so supportive, especially Marie Miss and Vira Miss. Also, Marie Miss’s mom because she helped me a lot with madhaha lyrics. Theyra Sir was amazing and he always wished the best for us. He was always behind us. I would also like to thank my parents and my four brothers. My brothers were very protective, extremely supportive and incredibly reliable. Next, I want to thank my boyfriend and his family members! We grew up together and the family have been very supportive and would attend my performances that they possibly can so that I don’t feel uncomfortable since there would be familiar faces in the crowd. Lastly, I would like to thank my friends and school members.
