Dear Readers,

T

he eighteenth issue of VIBE Maldives marks my one year anniversary at the magazine and what an extraordinary year it has been with the team here at VIBE. After almost six years working as a fashion writer and later serving as the editor; I’ve seen an incredibly positive development in the local fashion scene. We have featured countless artists from different fields and shared their awe-inspiring journeys with you all. The eighteenth installment of VIBE is special as its an assortment of artists and professionals but also it strings together a common spirit - passion. From Reggae artist and ‘Dinbaa’ founder Haisham, to our local earth warriors Afrah and Hamsha from Zero Waste Maldives. Each have a fervent desire to push themselves forward and they do it in the most selfless ways. Whilst we talk about artists from various fields, we rarely come across individuals who are multifaceted. Our cover star Kevin is one such individual. A fitness enthusiast who equally loves food and most of all loves to share it with others through his

humble food outlet ‘Comfood’ - Kevin’s warm energy is infectious and is as addictive as his famous ‘Comfood boava rolls’. We have featured yet another remarkable visual artist, Firushana. She takes us through her unique abstract paintings and shares her inspirations. We have recently noticed a surge in home bakers and the general publics enthusiasm for homebaked goods, which leads us to the brilliant baker Azza. She was also very generous to share a special recipe with us. The year seems to have gone by with the blink of an eye, and we have already seen a multitude of trends. If you are looking for ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe then turn to our Style column for some sartorial inspiration. After all it is always better to walk into a fresh year with style that embraces your unique personality.

I

f having a meal outside on the street is something you are looking for in our busy little Male’ city, then Comfood is perhaps one of the first places any local would suggest. Located on a narrow street in Henveyru not too far from ‘Raalhugandu’ a popular surf point - you can easily tell it’s Comfood with the buzz of conversation and laughter, music being played on speakers and people enjoying a cuppa or snacking on a healthy roll. Comfood provides an experience that no other place in Male’ does as of yet. I had the privilege of sitting down and having a conversation with the man behind the idea and got to learn a little bit more about him. While food is something Kevin is passionate about, the love for food comes hand in hand with a drive to stay healthy and lead a well-balanced lifestyle. He has always stood out, with his unique sense of style and all around laid-back vibe that he carries himself with. Kevin has always maintained a healthy figure and is an avid runner, which isn’t hard to tell judging by his toned and lean frame. I was looking forward to getting to know a little insight into what makes him who he is today and learn a little bit more about Comfood and ‘Kasrathu’, a new fitness camp that he started recently with a friend. As I met him to start the interview I was greeted with a warm smile and we chatted for a bit as he looked over the questions. I could immediately sense how laid back he was and his energy was warm and it immediately felt like I was talking to an old friend, despite having met him only once prior to this interview.

Most people know you by the name Kevin, would you be able to tell us a little bit about how the name came about?

Judging by the name ‘Comfood’ comfort food must be something you enjoy, what would be your ultimate go-to comfort food?

“Well the answer isn’t really all that exciting, it was simply because there were so many Ammadays around, one of my friends gave me the nickname Kevin, and it’s just stuck through out the years, I didn’t choose the name.”

“My all time favorite go to Comfood would be our boava rolls, Nutella brownie and mangopassion drink.”

How did you become passionate about food? “I have always wanted to live a healthy lifestyle and eating well is a huge part of it. I also wanted to share this with others. Eating clean and staying healthy is what I drive to achieve in my life.”

Comfood has become a popular hang out spot for a lot of people here in Male’, what in your opinion is the reason behind its popularity? “I feel that the main reason is the friendly vibe and good finger food. Good food and good vibe is always a winning combination in creating a warm and friendly atmosphere, which is what you will find at Comfood’

The famous ‘Boava Roll’ (octopus roll) is such a favorite amongst so many people, what was the inspiration behind the recipe? “Octopus has always been a popular delicacy among Maldivians, but it’s not readily available in male. It’s also really hard to catch and prepare for cooking. That’s why I decided to put the octopus roll on our menu and make it a unique attraction.”

What do you have in mind for the future of Comfood? “I always think that if you have a winning formula then there is really no need for bringing major changes to it. However there is a new dine-in surprise venture coming up! So stay tuned for it.”

I have always loved being well dressed. I feel that if you make an effort to look good then you will also feel good naturally and fashion is a big part of it...

Apart from your love for food, you are known for your drive behind staying fit and maintaining your body and image throughout the years. Would you tell us how you stay so driven and maintain a healthy lifestyle? “I always feel that if you stay focussed and disciplined in life, never giving up and always striving to reach your goals, the drive to do it will come naturally. Find something to do that you are passionate about and will never get tired of doing it.”

‘Kasrathu camp’ came into being not so long ago, what is it and what are some of the services you provide? “Kasrathu camp is a shared vision between myself and my friend Martha who is a trainer and we’ve had this idea for a couple of years now. The objective of the camp is to help people implement fitness as a part of their everyday lives. We focus on callisthenic workouts (using your own body weight). I am the running coach, I focus on the cardio training of our clients and Martha focuses on the strength and endurance training.”

Food, fitness and fashion, these are some of the things we think about when we hear the name Kevin, since we’ve touched base on food and fitness, would you now be able to tell us a little bit about your style, and what inspires the way you dress? “I have always loved being well dressed. I feel that if you make an effort to look good then you will also feel good naturally and fashion is a big part of it. I do dress accordingly to my moods and also depending on what I have to do on any given day. Confidence is in the mind.”

I do dress accordingly to my moods and also depending on what I have to do on any given day. Confidence is in the mind.

Do you think that there is a stigma surrounding men who enjoy grooming and general up keep here in the Maldives? If so why do you think that is? “I think it used to be like that before, but I don’t think that you need to make any distinction between men and women when it comes to grooming and fashion. It’s a universal concept, which applies to everyone.”

What would you describe your style as? “I would say that even in dressing, my style is drawn towards comfortable outfits which makes me feel good.”

Would you say that men’s fashion or the way men in the Maldives dress has evolved over the years? “ Yes I would say that, nowadays, due to the influence of social media, men are more aware of how to dress appropriately on any given occasion.”

What would be a word of advice or a general rule of thumb you live your life based on? “Be kind, stay happy and respect each other.”

R E L AT I O N S H I P

Dear Juliet,

To text or not to text first? By: Hasko

O

MG he texted! Should I text him back right away? Maybe I should wait like 2 hours. Wait, is that way too long? How long is too long? I don’t want to seem desperate, but I don’t want to wait long enough for him to get bored! WHAT DO I DO?!! The little voice inside your head tells you one thing but you try and push it to the back and think realistically. This lasts about 2 minutes and you’re back on the worry wagon again. Well dear readers, I can tell you now that you are not alone in feeling some sort of way when random acts of communication are hard to decipher in your own mind. We as humans make up so many rules or certain guidelines that are deemed okay and not okay yet we do it without thinking that the thought may not be of a mutual understanding between our partners. Whether consciously or unconsciously, whether at home, at work, among strangers, or among friends, we have all engaged in games that are sometimes beneficial and useful, and other times detrimental to our health and the wellbeing of others. Psychological games are often rewarding

20 VIBE | issue 18 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

to one party and harmful to the other, creating exhausting and messy dynamics in every kind of relationship. According to Dr. Eric Berne, the author of Games People Play, the main reason that people play games with each other in relationships is to get something that either party desires. Wanting an emotional or tangible reward give us reason to use hidden tactics with one another. Some of the games we play have become so ingrained in our personalities that we hardly even notice we are in fact involved in a psychological game of cat and mouse. One of the most common and recognizable games that we play is the game of “Hard to Get”. I am sure that most of you reading this would have played this game intentionally or unintentionally at some point. We are so wired to thinking that if we act available to someone that we have expressed interest in, they would immediately see it as ‘desperate’ and we become unappealing to them. Although it isn’t completely true, the thought behind that has some validity to it. When someone does seem a bit unavailable or aloof it does create a sense of mystery around him or her, which in turn makes him or her more appealing. The game of cat and mouse thus ensues.

Dear Juliet,

Picture this scenario: Ms A meets Mister B, there is an immediate connection, conversation is flowing and there is obvious flirting going on. When the time comes for the conversation to end Mister B asks for Ms A’s phone number. She dodges the question and plays it off even though she wants to give it to him. He persists and towards the end of their first ever interaction, after they’ve already played a game with each other, she gives him her number. Fast forward to a few more days he calls to ask her out, she doesn’t answer straight away and pretends she was busy, all the while jumping for joy on the inside and quite possibly in reality. But she waits till he calls again, because obviously if he calls the SECOND time must mean he is really very interested right? The fact of the matter is if someone is interested in you, they will make the move and initiate contact. As mentioned in the scenario Mister B called Ms A in the first place because obviously he was interested. Ms A didn’t need to wait for the second call to know that, but she chose to wait. One reason being she wanted to bring the unavailability factor into it and also to actually gauge the interest level that he has towards her. It’s all very silly in a way, as the reality of the situation is that they both like each other. So why are they playing games? I guess dear readers, that is a question, which really doesn’t have one certain answer. In my opinion I don’t think that we will ever stop the games that we play, but I do think that there is a limit to how far we should take them. For instance playing ‘hard to get’ may sometimes keep both parties curious about each other if they are genuinely interested, but it also may push them away if the game continues for an unreasonable length of time. Because honestly, someone who has the time and makes effort to engage in game playing behavior to an unhealthy level, is not someone anyone should be interested in anyway.

I met a girl through some mutual friends of ours and we hit it off right away. But I really can’t tell if she is interested in me or if it’s just a friendly situation. We haven’t exchanged any info yet, but I don’t know if I should reach out. What if she only likes me as a friend? afraidofrejection , 19

Dear afraidofrejection, Well I guess you will never know unless you try right? Although rejection may seem like the most daunting thing right now, do so in a way that you might not feel like a complete fool. Reach out, talk to her and see if she expresses enough interest for you to then ask her out. Trust me, if she is interested I’m sure she will be just as excited for you to ask her and soon enough you will know, and if she doesn’t express a romantic interest you will be able to gauge that too. I hope you figure it out soon. xx

Dear Juliet I’ve been dating this boy for a few months now, and in the beginning he used to text me all the time, but I’ve noticed a gradual decrease in our talks over text as the months went by. Is he getting bored of me? Worried&confused, 23

Dear worried&confused An important factor here is that you said ‘talks over text’ well if the talks in real life are flowing and don’t make you feel like he is bored of you, text conversations shouldn’t even be a worry. I feel that external factors wouldn’t remain exactly the same throughout the time whole time you’ve been together. Has his schedule changed? Maybe he is busier at work? Take these thoughts into account before jumping to that conclusion. As your relationship progresses you should realize you don’t have to be talking to someone all the time, to know that you both like each other. However if it is something that bothers you for a long period of time, it’s always best to express how you feel. Who knows, you just might get the answer you need. Girl if you know you aren’t boring, don’t let anyone be the reason you question it. xx

COKE NEW ADVERT

MUSICIAN

IN CONVERSATION WITH MALDIVIAN REGGAE KING By: Angel Suja

“Ebey sidin, vettidhaane. Ithuru dhoreh, hulhuvidhaane. Mashah mikan goahee…” The catchy brass tune that followed the powerful lyrics Haisham penned and sang, became an unexpected anthem for the young and old during the mid 2000’s political turmoil. As one of Maldivian music’s royalties this humble artist keeps a low profile and only performs for special events. The creator of some beloved songs such as ‘Odihanu’ and ‘Kobaa Neihtha’ grew up in a family of musicians and singers. “I have always wanted to sing, even as a child, it’s something I enjoy passionately”, said Haisham. His elder brother Adhuham who was the bassist for iconic band Zero Degree Atoll would help him prepare for singing competitions. Haisham was also a child star in an early nineties children’s show called Prime Time which aired on national TV. “I would sing and dance with other kids on the show. And my hair was straight back then - can you believe it!”, chuckled Haisham. One of the biggest inspirations for him is Naashid. “He would play Reggae flawlessly. And since my brother was the bassist for the band, I would always get free access to Zero Degree Atoll gigs. I remember going to all their shows”, he reminisced. “I was later invited by Naashid to perform with him on reggae nights at the resorts”, Haisham added. When asked why he prefers Reggae “I feel it more than any other genre”, he said. “I get emotional and it moves me”. For a true artist, it takes a lot more than physical skill to create. “I think anyone can bob their head to Reggae. It has a universal appeal

24 VIBE | issue 18 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

From growing up watching Zero Degree Atoll perform, to jamming with the great Naashid himself, Haisham shares some of the most memorable moments of his music career. to relax and hype someone as well”. Rather than pointing out a certain Reggae artist as his favorite, he prefers an artist’s style Bob Marley and Peter Tosh’s have a great impact on his work. Growing up with artists like Naashid or Haisham’s brother Adhuham, who embraced and encouraged originality, helped to boost his innate drive to create authentic work. So it comes as no surprise that Haisham was one of the leading artists to form one of the largest group of local artists - Dinba Music or as Haisham calls ‘Dinba family’. With a mission to create original music that one can proudly call Maldivian, local musicians pool their talents to create authentic Maldivian songs. In 2013, Along with some of his Dinba family members Haisham released his first solo album Odihanu. Produced and recorded in Klangkantine Studio, Germany the album includes eight songs. The rich melodic compositions harmonized with Haisham’s effortless vocal range and complimented the Reggae feel - needless to say Odihanu will go down in history as another pioneering Maldivian album. Unlike most album releases, Odihanu was distributed to public free of charge - an admirable way of sharing a product that took blood and sweat to create. In a country where the music field is still at an embryonic stage - inspiring upcoming artists seem more rewarding for Haisham. “Most of the original work I have made has been shared with people without expecting any financial return. It’s just how it is here but there’s great joy in it as well”, he said.

“Like during the time hundreds and thousands of people were gathered at the Raalhugandu area, everyone was talking about then police’s brutality with a screen showing some graphic images. I remember heading out for a ride, to get some fresh air and suddenly being struck with a song that I couldn’t get out of my head for weeks”, he recalled. “I had to write it and make it. Eventually Gianscore Vitte, Mike and myself did a rough recording. Which we later developed with Kuda Hussain and Dr. Shifaz to give the brass band feel”.

Listening to a piece in which the artist has put his heart and soul into, is undoubtedly a privilege for us. But artists like Haisham who keep on giving, craves for institutions and establishments that will support their living and help to hone their craft. “We still need a proper platform for artists to come together and perform”. There are hundreds of talented people who are looking for ways to harness it into a stable career. Haisham’s brother, Adhuham initiated ‘Fannu Ge Dharin’,

Most of the original work I have made has been shared with people without expecting any financial return. It’s just how it is here but there’s great joy in it as well a show that followed after the inception of Dinba Music. “It started small, using our own speakers and equipment. But its grown into a proper annual festival now, that is backed by sponsors. We still need organizers who can organize such events and sponsors to fund it. We still need a lot of support to grow”, he said. “I don’t think though, that we will see the day the Maldivian music industry becomes a fully fledged one - not in our lifetime”, Haisham added with a shot-down tone in his voice. Some of the current artists he admires includes Affan and Zara, with whom he has worked on several occasions, producing renown songs such as ‘Rukakun’ and ‘Faathumaa’. From his seniors, Sameeu, Rizuvy and Naashid inspire him greatly. Haisham’s humble disposition is a complete contrast to his spirited and gritty musical side. He plans to release a second album featuring original works in the near future and we are already assured that it will amaze us.

Get your snorkel gear ready! This UNESCO biosphere reserve is one of Maldives’ most exciting encounters with the natural world and should not be missed if you’re in Baa Atoll. Aside from being one of the world’s most important feeding and breeding grounds for manta rays and whale sharks, it is possible to snap a selfie with these incredible sea giants, as well as get some great shots of the corals and marine life.

As we all go about our daily lives, it is very easy to forget that there’s an entire universe swirling above our heads. This could be on any island across the Maldives, but finding a precise location can be a challenge, as you need an area with little light pollution and a smartphone app to assist you in locating the Milky Way. The biggest constraint when doing Milky Way photography is keeping the stars in sharp focus while trying to capture as much light as possible. Keep looking up!

Reading between the textures with abstract artist By: Angel Suja

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? I have always loved drawing/painting and just playing around with colors ever since I can remem-ber. Passing notes to my friends in class evolved into designed cards or a simple doodle or a handmade gift. Since then I started out by experimenting with different mediums; from doodling, scribbling or painting although lines & shapes on paper with colors splattered around fascinated me the most. I discovered that recycled materials always made whatever I did pop out and as I recall it has always been non-subjective. It has always been more of something that came natu-rally to me and so I tend to favor abstract art the most. As I grew older, it was more about doing something that I truly enjoyed and so I began my journey. Currently, I work on abstract art and designs and I have recently started doing custom works of art depending on my client’s require-ments as long as it fits my style of art.

36 VIBE | issue 18 - 2019 vibemaldives.com

Your Instagram handle does state the obvious - your style is abstract art. But, how would you describe it in detail? Hehe yes, I practice abstractive styles with acrylic and basically anything that moves me or touches me. My artistic process is mutable, it changes and evolves; often finding balance along the fine line of thoughtful, intentional composition with the intuitive placement of color, shapes, texture and gestural marks that convey vibrant and uplifting abstract paintings.

straight onto the canvas in a non representational statement with lines as well as the aggressive mingling of colors. Many people told me that they thought it was a harbor; they saw a boat, others said it was a forest and there was a river flowing… and I can see what they are seeing. It’s not necessarily how I want it, but it’s not to say that it’s wrong.

A very simple way to understand the essence of abstract art is to think of it as a visual opposite of realistic art. Sometimes, I find a subject that creates a strong emotional response in me. For example, the art piece I exhibited at UV19 is called “Earth Tones”. I used natural colors, so a lot of brown yes! I am deeply concerned about human activities that cause damage (either directly or indirectly) to our environment. The expression goes

Abstract art requires you to have an open, inquiring mind. You must enter the painting and see where it takes you, it gives you the freedom to explore and derive your own meaning from how it speaks to you.

You play a lot with colors, layers and textures. Is there anything in particular that influ-ences your style and approach to a painting ? That’s right! Colors and textures have always fascinated me. I tend to go more for the practical. I often experiment acrylic on different surfaces, play with looser lines and different color combina-tions. I love my palette knife: to the wonderful self indulgent experience of just pushing color around; my paintings take on many lives. Creating inspires more creativity. Inspiration isn’t found: it is an everlasting, never ending practice.

Besides your abstract art pieces, you work with different mediums and created a variety of commissioned works such as hand-painted signage boards and even coasters. Could you tell us about the different works you do besides painting.

Your clear resin coasters are refreshingly beautiful, with real leaves, bark pieces and dried bougainvillea in them. How do you collect them and are they local flora and fauna? Thank you for your kind words. I frequently bring the outdoors into my home. I am a habitual col-lector of recycled items, twigs, leaves and the list goes on. I’ve always loved nature and what it has to offer me. The color transformation process in leaves occurs when their chemical composition changes. When I was in my primary, I used to press the leaves between two absorbent pieces of paper and then flatten it out with a heavy book. But this time I wanted to preserve these vibrant colors as it is, with no color distortions. This is when the idea came to me. To preserve them in resin so I know they are forever sealed. I decided to make clear coasters with resin to capture the beauty of nature. These coasters are part of a series called “Tropical Bliss”. I col-lected local flora & fauna, not just flowers and leaves but ilaa, bit and pieces from common tropi-cal plants.

Where have your works been exhibited so far? Unveiling Visions 2019, Fannuge Dharin Festival, Island Beach House and Oevaru Gallery Cafe’. My work has been bought by private collectors as well.

If, say you were not a painter or artist, what would you be doing? Hmm. This is a very interesting question. Could you please give me a couple of days to sleep on it. Hehe

Any new works from you that we should look forward to? I am looking forward to exhibit my work in a solo capacity, sometime in the near future. For now, I will keep exploring, pondering and painting, one foot in front of the other. I will share the journey with everyone on my Instagram feed. Stay tuned!

I collect naturally withered and old wood. hehe . Besides from that I also do graphic works relat-ed to sales & marketing on a project basis.

uch like the rest of us, Azleena’s dream began with failures. Or to be more specific, with raw middles like an unintended lava cake. Attempts with the basic, the box cake mix, would end up burnt. But every success story begins with miscalculated amounts of ingredients. Even though her failures were disheartening, Azleena’s passion that sprouted at a young age pushed her to learn more and to take part in a patisserie course right after she graduated from high school. The decision was fruitful as it helped her narrow down within the many varieties of desserts, to cookies and petit four. After attaining newfound confidence, Azleena began baking cookies and cakes for her family and friends. It was the unlimited support and encouragement from them, especially her sisters that actualized Azzlicious Bakes. Although quiet during the initial years, as she was challenged to balance her passion with her

further studies, she came back this year more driven than ever. Azzlicious Bakes flourished as Azleena introduced her new cookies that were developed from scratch. It is evident that her cookies are incredible, as fresh batches that she sells on her Instagram page disappear within a few hours. To boot, she announced that she is already working on creating new recipes for cookies, which will be introduced very soon. While she is overjoyed with the compliments she is receiving for her cookies, Azleena encourages her customers to provide her with constructive criticism. She explained that her best-seller, the Chocolate Chip Cookies enhanced because of the reviews she received. Azleena believes that the formulation of her cookies need not end with her, but it carries on while modifying to the likes of her customers. As the interview with VIBE continued, Azleena explained how she gives utmost importance to bake at the right

temperature, to use quality ingredients and to use the right amount of ingredients, since even a little difference can change the texture or even the taste. She also revealed that her secret ingredient is love. “ I believe that my secret ingredient is love! It is my love for baking that pushes me to try hard, to put so much thought into what I bake and to create the best I possibly can! ” Azleena explained passionately. Although it is a challenge to do all the work that comes with her business, from choosing the ingredients, answering inquiries, taking the orders and more, her dreams do not end here. Inspired by her army of loyal supporters, especially her mum, Azleena dreams of becoming a professional Pastry Chef and to further root her brand by opening a bakery with Azzlicious Bake. With the hopes of spreading love and positive vibes through her cookies, Azleena works hard every day to step closer to her goals.

Stepping Towards A More Sustainable Environment. By: Ihusana Thaufeeq

I

t is undeniably obvious that our environment is worsening. Even a quick scroll through our social media would highlight at least one post about how much danger it is in. Who hasn’t heard that the Maldives will sink in a few years? What are we handing over to our future generations? These thoughts are unnerving to mull over. It is disheartening to ponder on whether your sole contribution could even make an impact. That being said, it is soothing to see how much we are aware of this, as a community. We are slowly, but finally moving forward to a more sustainable environment. It is times like these that we have to truly appreciate those who take a step further ahead than the rest of us.

Zero Waste Maldives Meeting the lovely couple behind this amazing initiative was truly a pleasure. Afrah and Hamsha established Zero Waste Maldives after discovering the waste management system that is set up here in the Maldives. Finding out that there is no proper arrangement for it made them conscious of how severe the problem is. Frustration was replaced with an urge to act on it as they launched Zero Waste Maldives in October 2018. Their first step was to provide alternatives to tackle the big four; bottles, bags, straws and toothbrushes, as they are the most difficult to dispose of. Simultaneously, they proactively began to participate in events and conduct sessions to create more awareness about single use plastics, how to manage waste and of their alternatives. Just recently, they were also successful in establishing refill stations here in the Maldives where you can fill your carry on water bottle, instead of purchasing plastic water bottles.

As for their next step, Afrah and Hamsha are planning to connect everyone who are working towards a more sustainable environment to a single platform; their website. In addition to creating an ecosystem with people who share the same concern towards the environment, the website will showcase the products and services of said people so that one day if you decide to invest in a more environment friendly alternative, all you have to do is visit zerowastemaldives.com. On top of that, they are also preparing to start an NGO in the near future and are looking forward to bringing in genuine members that will help them with future projects. “The ultimate purpose of zero waste is that nothing goes to landfill, nothing ends up in the ocean and nothing gets incinerated or open burnt. It is a very ambitious goal but it has to be the goal so that you will think about reducing drastically. We need to think about living minimally as well as leaving the smallest possible footprint.

Preloved Maldives Growing up in a household where it was a norm for older siblings to pass down their clothes to the younger, really exposed Shaifa to the concept of secondhand clothes. But it was while she was studying abroad that the idea of starting a secondhand shop in the Maldives came to light. With her family and friends supporting her, Shaifa launched Preloved Maldives in July 2019 and the response was spectacular. She begins the process of selling secondhand clothes by collecting them from donators, paying RF5 for each clothing. She then thoroughly checks, washes them and divides in batches. After categorizing them Shaifa posts photos on her Instagram page. At every stage of the process, she believes that transparency is very important; staying true to the whole purpose, being true to the donators, what she posts and being true and transparent to her customers. As Shaifa explained, one of the main purposes of Preloved Maldives is to

normalize secondhand shopping and to make people more aware of how secondhand shopping is the more sustainable way to go. The other is to contribute to creating a circular economy here in the Maldives. “When you make people more aware of the pollute aspect of the fashion industry, we believe that people will be more interested in buying secondhand and they are more likely to become conscious consumers. I think it is very important for the environment and for the planet. Given that Maldives is such a small country with such a small population, I believe that it is very possible. Maybe not completely eliminate waste in the fashion industry but at least minimize it. In the future, Shaifa plans to introduce upcycling faulty clothes and creating and implementing solid campaigns to make people aware about how secondhand can be a more sustainable way.

Ogaa Combining the desire to create something of their own and their concern for the environment, this power couple began designing and producing handmade candles, decorative stones and environment friendly soap bars back in 2017.

February 2019 and got certified. To boot to that, they also test PH level of their soaps and the Total Fatty Matter (TFM) which determines the quality of the soap. Their soap is 80.0% which makes the soap Grade A.

After much research and development, in April 2019 they launched the brand name Ogaa which solely focuses on bath and body products.

“We are very careful and thorough before introducing any product. We do the research, we formulate and we test them. We launch a product only when we are confident. Even when it comes to designing! It will be very easy to produce a plain soap. But we both love playing with colors and we love coming up with creative ideas and putting the effort for our products.”

Ogaa the word comes from ‘ogaa therikan’ (compassion or caring) and so far, Azu and Hussain have introduced soap bars, shampoo bars and conditioner bars under the brand. The ingredients used in these products are all natural, with no animal testing and are 100% bio degradable; the packaging is plastic free. For consumer confidence, they have acquired ISO 9001: 2015, the international standard for quality management during

While overwhelmed by how people reacted to their product as everything went out of stock, although discreet about it, Azu and Hussain announced that within

the next 6 months, they plan to launch new products. “We are environment conscious and we will be throughout.” Although the area the three of them focus on are completely different, the ultimate goal to a more sustainable environment is not. It’s time we all do our part in lending a hand. A single action, no matter how small it is, can change the course of the entire cause. Imagine how many people would consider accepting a plastic bag just because it’s this once? Imagine if everyone had refused? Let’s work towards a more sustainable environment for the Maldives together.
