The Maldives

It’s a place beyond imagination. It’s a true paradise and a place of dreams. I am genuinely saying this because I’ve never felt so special in my life”.

The stay here

It’s my first time here. Everything exceeded my expectations and was different to what I had pictured prior in my head. My room and my water villa oh my god, I never want

to leave this place, ever! The view of the huge crystal clear sea every morning and the water bed, it’s living my dream”.

VIBE and her Photo-shoot

“I truly appreciate their efforts for making me feel so acknowledged, special and alive. Arranging breakfast and dinner for me by the sea even when I am here without a date, cheers to singlehood and cheers to Adaaran hotels”.

I’m honoured to be featured in VIBE magazine because I heard it’s one of the biggest and the most widely read fashion and lifestyle magazines across Maldives. There is nothing like it here. And the backgrounds and locales of the Maldives and getting featured with a photo-shoot from Hussain Shiham, whose work I’ve seen; nothing feels greater than this. I’m a girl and I love photo shoots and I love pictures and with these great settings, I am bound to go “gaga” over the end result of the shoot”

The Maldivian People and Culture

Honestly I don’t know much about the culture here. But from what I gathered over my short visit, they seem very dignified people who live a good lifestyle. Alcohol being restricted and those aspects I may not personally understand it, but I respect

that and I also learn that Maldivians speak their own language Dhivehi. When I landed here, I saw some Maldivian girls and they are genuinely so beautiful I could not take my eyes off them”.

Return to the Maldives

This time I was visiting alone, so I want to come back for my birthday or a new year’s eve with my family and brother. I know they will love it here. When I get married sometime in life, my first honeymoon would also be in the Maldives and nowhere else in the world. It’s very dreamlike and the place you want to be, because it’s not crowded and gives you peace. It gives your own sweet time by yourself. This is how much I truly fell in love with the Maldives”.

one are the days when we hear couples either married, single or in a relationship. Now most of the people fit to the group “it’s complicated ” whatever that means! When you are single you don’t depend on anyone to make your decisions. You probably take responsibility for your own actions and face consequences. Most importantly you have no expectations on anyone to be there for you and get disappointed. So life is pretty much uncomplicated. When you are married, you don’t just share a bed, but everything from happiness to worries with each other. Decisions are made together. Most of the time you come to a conclusion by making compromises, which is much expected. Therefore, still very much uncomplicated. When in a relationship, you would think it’s pretty simple. Because, two people agree and choose to be with each other. They take time to get to know each other. It’s not a marriage yet, so not everything has to be shared and expected from your partner. But since it’s your own choice to be together, you both get to maintain your own space. Still, sounds pretty uncomplicated. Then why do so many couples in relationships relate to being “complicated”, I wonder...

26 VIBE | ISSUE 12 - 2017 vibetrends.com

Women! They are so complicated. I don’t understand them. It’s like I should know what they think before they say it. How would I? Answers a man.

” “

They make it complicated. I haven’t met a man who seem to know how to say what they feel. Is that so difficult? Answers a woman.

Both frustrated, I noticed. Both had one thing in common, I noticed that too. Men and women can’t seem to communicate with each other on a level both understands the other. Women talk all the time. They gossip, share, and chitchat.., it’s always nonstop communication and yet there seem to be no misunderstanding between them. Men, on the other hand can spend hours and hours with each other in activities like playing a videogame to watching matches on TV and yet they somehow understand each other’s vibes and communicate rather well. But when it comes to a man and woman communicating with each other, there seems to be a problem, most of the time. Let’s face it! Both men and women are different. They communicate in different ways as well. The language may be the same, but the use of phrases in conversation is different. The sooner you accept the fact and learn the true meanings, the less complicated your relationship is going to be.

WHAT WOMEN REALLY MEAN WHEN THEY SAY;

In short, believe the opposite, when a woman says something. They are indeed very difficult to understand. But that doesn’t mean men are easier or better. They have their set of phrases that are meant to be understood too.

The calm before the storm. If she says there’s nothing that is worrying her, it usually means something is bugging her and you need to recall everything that you told her to you did, to be prepared for the argument that is coming, or run for life!

WHAT MEN REALLY MEAN WHEN THEY SAY;

FINE:

IT IS NOT YOU, IT’S ME.

That marks an end of an argument or close of a conversation. Normally an argument that begins with nothing ends with a fine. That means she’s right and you need to shut up.

What they really mean is, it is not them, and it’s you! And since it’s your fault, don’t blame them.

GO AHEAD:

What it really means is he is in doubt. And that he doesn’t want to share his doubts with you. Give him his space and let him sort his problems on his own.

NOTHING:

Don’t you dare! Unless you want more problem. That certainly is not a permission to go on with whatever you were talking. LEAVE ME ALONE: Stay by her side. Hear what she has to say, talk or do whatever she wants. Do whatever, just don’t leave her.

I NEED SPACE

LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS LATER. Later is never going to happen. This means he doesn’t want to talk or listen about it, ever!

WE NEED TO TALK:

TOO BUSY TO FOCUS ON A RELATIONSHIP

You are in trouble. This either means she knows something about you that could kill the relationship or she wants you to know this is not going to work out for both of you anymore.

Ouch! Nobody would be too busy for a relationship. Most probably he is seeing someone who is better than you, or someone he likes more than you. Walk out and accept it.

Next time, you think you are in a complicated relationship, first make sure you are both communicating the same language.

World’s Best Places to Travel in 2017

he world is becoming smaller and smaller with the advances in technology and transport, while increasing the chances of having incredible new experiences. Whether it’s an emerging sandbank in the Caribbean or the mountain range in Chile, next year’s standout destinations are changing the travel landscape. I have identified 10 standout destinations, based on industry news, expert advice and travel inspiring hashtags on Instagram.

2. Belize Reykjavík

1. Reykjavík Stunning, yet tiny, the northern most capital of the world astounds with bright, colorful buildings, artistic minds, quirky designs and plenty of late-night entertainment. A town by international standards, Reykjavík offers space and serenity compared with most hustle-bustle European cities. World-renowned for Northern Lights viewing, also referred as the Aurora Borealis, can be seen painting the winter night skies, blazing in red, blue and purple patterns.

42 VIBE | ISSUE 12 - 2017 vibetrends.com

Regardless of its small size, Belize awaits adrenaline junkies and culture-seekers with its dense jungle forest surrounding most of the country. It boasts some of the most spectacular landscapes in the region, dazzling shade of turquoise, underwater coral gardens, multi-colored marine life, and the ancient Mayan history. The dependable public transport options and various hotels makes it an ideal place for solo travelers. Not to forget it is also home to the world-renowned “Blue Hole”.

Belize

3. Dublin A “little capital” with big city perks, Dublin’s 1,000 years old traditions and life principles will not disappoint its visitors. Exploring the Georgian squares and stately houses, museums, cathedrals and churches, historic buildings, castles, restaurants and museums are some of the endless supply of things to do and visit in this Viking city. With its warm hearted and kind people, no wonder this lively city is rapidly ascending the list of Europe’s favorite tourist destinations. All you got to do is show up.

Dublin

Petra

5. Petra Undoubtedly the most popular and mysterious charm in Jordan, hidden in the deep southwestern deserts. A hauntingly beautiful site centuries old, buried with secrets waiting to be unveiled. The templetombs are chiselled entirely into the rose-red cliffs, thanks to its vague location in the center of a windblown landscape, a view which will not fail to impress. Set your sights on the historical kaleidoscope of this ancient city, it is equally incredible and breathtaking to see in person.

Costa R

ica

4. Costa Rica

6. Galรกpagos Islands Once feared a sorcerer had a spell casted over an isolated group of thirteen volcanic islands, dispersed across 45,000 square kilometres of Pacific Ocean. The islands are in a strange formation, blanketed in emerald forest with volcanic bumps here and there, they are no less fascinating now than they were a hundred years ago. Do we have to be a marine biologist or a geologist to value one of the few places left in the world where the human foot is kept to a minimum?

gos Galรกpa Islands

Picturesque trails leading to deep caves, forested valleys, volcanoes, mangrove swamps, waterfalls, and desolated beaches. Tucked between both the oceans, the Pacific and Atlantic, often portrayed as a powerhouse of political and economic activity in the center of an unstable region. Costa Rica is a giant playground with a captivating wildlife, much of it is now protected by local laws, also widely referred as a system of its kind.

7. Havana

Havana Moscow

Arriving at Havana is like stepping back in time and is everything you imagine it to be and more. Until recently, travel from the US to Cuba was all but impossible – and it promises plenty of things to see and do. The city is taking a progressive turn, which may not be apparent right away, but behind the historical walls are some of the emerging boutique hotels, villas and luxury lodgings that fortunately has not compromised the charm of this incredible city. So don’t come to Havana searching for answers, instead come with an open mind and an open heart.

8. Transylvania Most visitors imagine Transylvania as a realm of dark fairy-tales, where fog condenses on tree leaves like spider webs and drips onto the ground. The deep thick jungles and the ruined Gothic castles will treat the medieval fantasies of its visitors, among the tall towers and the narrow cobblestone lanes of Sighişoara and Braşov. Transylvania will please fans of vampire movies and television shows, and captivate with its jumble of tensed places and towns that time has forgotten.

9. Moscow Thrilling its visitors 7 days a week, 365 days an year with its creativity, heritage and grandeur. Far forgotten its origin as a quiet wooden town that it once upon a time was, the present-day Moscow has transformed into a city that never sleeps: its residents and visitors can get anything they want around the clock. Moscow is a strike on all sensations: a sea of commuters on the subway, designer shops, fine dining, highend galleries and chic nightlife, cathedrals with colorful domes and historical treasures.

FOOD TRENDS for 2017

&

PICKLES FERMENTS

Health trends move fast, whether that’s the hottest vegetable of the moment (cauliflower, in case you were wondering), a trendy piece of kit or a buzz phrase, like ‘gut health’ – the term that’s set to be at the heart of the health world in 2017. What this means is more yet more pickling and fermenting, so kimchi, kombucha and Yucatan pickles will remain foods du jour. Gut-friendly foods like these are thought to help with irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, fertility, immunity, low energy and libido.

ZERO WASTE

HEALTHY SNACKS

WELLNESS TONICS

Minimizing food waste is something we’re 100% behind, and now the war on waste is gaining traction.

According to trends panel, a continued blurring of mealtimes will mean more of us opt to graze instead of eat three meals a day. Picking and sharing small plates are on the rise, as are healthier snack solutions, so expect to see lower-sugar and high-protein bites.

Tonics with botanicals that have roots in alternative medicine will be popular in 2017. The most popular ingredients right now include kava, tulsi/holy basil, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, medicinal mushrooms (like reishi and chaga), and adaptogenic herbs (maca and ashwagandha). Some of the hottest products right now with these ingredients include Kor organic raw shots, Suja drinking vinegars, and Temple turmeric elixirs.

PURPLE FOOD

COCONUT EVERYTHING

Purple food — including purple cauliflower, sweet potatoes, corn, and asparagus — is becoming more mainstream.

Coconut will be one of the hottest ingredients of 2017. There are now coconut flour tortillas, coconut sugar aminos, and coconut chips.

JAPANESE FOOD BEYOND SUSHI Japanese-inspired eating is on the rise, and it doesn’t look anything like a sushi roll. Ponzu, miso, mirin, sesame oil, seaweed, Japanese-style pickles, and plum vinegar are some of the ingredients in Japanese food that are growing in popularity.

10 MAKEUP MYTHS YOU NEED TO STOP BELIEVING IMMEDIATELY

W

hether you’ve been applying makeup every morning for the past two decades or only the past two weeks, there are always new tricks to learn. But more importantly, there are mistakes to unlearn. The beauty landscape has evolved so much in just a few short years, and there’s a chance that you’re using old information that is sabotaging your makeup routine. For example, are you pumping your mascara wand to get excess formula onto the brush? Are you picking a lighter shade of concealer than your complexion? If so, it’s time you got schooled.

THE BEAUTY LANDSCAPE HAS EVOLVED SO MUCH IN JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS, AND THERE’S A CHANCE THAT YOU’RE USING OLD INFORMATION THAT IS SABOTAGING YOUR MAKEUP ROUTINE.

PUMPING MASCARA LOADS EXTRA PRODUCT ON THE BRUSH. If you’ve sworn by doing this

in the past, you’re not imagining things — it really does pack more of the formula onto the brush, as the extra oxygen is “thickening” the product. But in the long run, it’s a bad move. You’re reducing the lifespan of the mascara, the formula will dry out quicker. If you’re hoping to extend the life of your favorite tube, add a few drops of a liquefying formula Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal, which intensifies pigments and makes products more durable.

YOUR CONCEALER SHOULD BE LIGHTER THAN YOUR SKIN TONE. Lighter unfortunately

does not equate to brighter. By going too light, you run the potential of creating an ash-gray tone under the eyes. Instead of picking a too-pale concealer, opt to color correct. Better look for a formula that closely matches to your skin tone but is a bit warmer. Opposite colors on the color wheel, like orange, are a great way to cancel out the blue/purple undertone of dark circles.

WOMEN WITH MATURE SKIN SHOULDN’T WEAR SHIMMER. You are never too mature

to look radiant. Shimmer can accentuate aging skin’s texture, but you can still incorporate a more luminous formula into your routine. Think in terms of radiant creams, liquids, and powder that are very refined and smooth. Stay clear of largerparticle glitters. Regardless of your age, it is of the utmost importance to be strategic when applying these kinds of products. Better focus on the high points of the face: brow bone, nose bridge, and upper cheekbone.

WOMEN WITH OILY SKIN SHOULD AVOID ADDING MOISTURE INTO THEIR SKIN CARE ROUTINE.

This is completely untrue. In fact, if you believe this myth, you are likely contributing to your excess sebum. Skin will overproduce oil as a response to dryness. Cleansing can strip your complexion of its natural oils, and if you don’t restore much-needed moisture, your skin will react by getting oilier. Avoid this by nourishing your skin with lightweight hydration. Look for skin care formulas that contain hyaluronic acid, as it is known to capture a thousand times its weight in water. By drawing water into the skin, you’ll keep it soft, healthy, and less greasy.

SETTING MAKEUP WITH POWDER IS ESSENTIAL.

While you want to control shine and extend the wear of your look, you shouldn’t pat powder all over your face. When you do this, you bone structure appears less defined and your foundation’s radiance falls flat. Use a small eye shadow buffing brush to set oil-prone areas, which he referred to as “hot spots.” These include your T-zone and the front of your cheeks. To fully set your makeup after you’ve applied powder to those trouble areas, use a setting spray – can try “Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix Setting Spray”, which will add an extra layer of shine protection.

MAKEUP CAUSES BREAKOUTS. It’s possible that

you could be having a bad reaction to your favorite formulas, but poor hygiene and contaminated products are usually to blame. Always, always use a makeup remover prior to using your face washes and skin care. Don’t rely on a face wash to remove all makeup from your skin. Besides, if your cleanser is loaded with active ingredients, they may not be able to fully penetrate the skin if there’s a layer of makeup on your face. Be sure to clean your brushes religiously, especially if they’ve touched congested skin. Also wipe the top layers of your favorite pressed powders before applying. This can remove potential bacteria.

YOU SHOULD MATCH YOUR FOUNDATION TO YOUR WRIST WHEN SHOPPING FOR A NEW SHADE. The best

place to match a foundation is on the area that you are placing it. If you hold your wrist up to your face and look at the two areas in the mirror, it is likely that the inside of your wrist will be much lighter than your face, and the outside will be a

56 VIBE | ISSUE 12 - 2017 vibetrends.com

bit darker. Try to match on your jawline instead. And don’t get frustrated if you need to test many colors! Typically, you need to try three colors before deciding on a perfect shade.

YOUR “ONE PERFECT SHADE” OF FOUNDATION EXISTS IN THE UNIVERSE.

Sorry to say it, but this is highly unlikely. That’s because your complexion’s color can vary wildly due to factors such as weather conditions, sun exposure, and hormones, which is why makeup artists tend to use multiple foundation hues on one client. You can typically find two or even three shades of skin on one face. By having two shades of foundation on hand, you are able to apply shades that match the different colors in your skin, then soften the transition between the two by blending. At the very minimum, you should have two founda-

tions in your stash — a lighter tone and a darker one — and mix them accordingly.

YOU SHOULD APPLY EYE CREAM EVERY MORNING BEFORE PUTTING ON YOUR MAKEUP. We applaud you for being

diligent about your antiaging routine, but those nourishing treatments can present problems with the wear and smoothness of your eye makeup. Focus on slicking on that eye cream at night instead. By applying at night, you’ll see better benefits. You’ll also need less moisture under your eye during the day if you wear your treatment to bed, improving your concealer application. If your under-eye is still dry, opt for a moisturizing primer or creamy concealer.

NOT EVERYONE CAN WEAR A SMOKY EYE. They may seem a

little intimidating or dramatic, but they don’t have to be either. Apply concealer or foundation as a base on your brow bone and crease, then smudging out a long-wear eyeliner pencil in the color of your choice with a pencil brush. Start small and tight to the lash line and the layer and smudge outward until you reach the desired effect. Instead of going right for a black smoky look, try taupe or brown instead.

FASHION DESIGNER

Angel Shujau

A

ngel Shujau is a not a new name in the fashion industry of Maldives. With her own line of beachwear and boutique running; she is also an illustrator and a writer. VIBE is proud to present one of our very own writers as the fashion designer of this issue. Exposed to art at a very young age, Angel tells us her story. With a massive dream of becoming a fashion designer since the beginning, she found tons of inspirations on a daily basis. Mostly from her dads studio back in the days. That is where she found the love for art. She got inspired by all sorts of crazy pieces of art she kept seeing.

Writer : Maacko

My dad’s an artist. Basically, I grew up in his studio. He would collect magazines. Tons of them! He would show them to me and I was finding keen interest on it back then too. That’s how it all started.

58 VIBE | ISSUE 12 - 2017 vibetrends.com

After her A’levels, she pursued on aspiring her dreams of becoming a fashion designer by completing her higher studies in India. She is multi-talented and very motivated. Angel has been keeping her own fashion blog and actively working with magazines as well as other news agencies. Her illustrations are seen on storybooks and her fashion columns along with style videos are now well known by a lot among us.

I’ve always wanted to become a fashion designer. And that has been like that since a kid. My first design was for TMA while I was studying in CHSE. I designed their uniforms. During this time, I was also doing illustrations for storybooks. But after school, I went abroad for my studies in fashion design. It was a diploma course in India. Upon completion of my course, I got back to Male’ and started working as a freelance designer. That’s when I started with my own blog. I started documenting my own designs and I’ve been keeping my blog since 2009. Got fond of writing in time and eventually started working with LeCute, VIBE and later joined Haveeru as a fashion columnist.

As the fashion columnist at Haveeru, Angel started with style videos. People appreciated her great sense of style and articles. Angel was doing a lot of interviews and other write ups for VIBE over the last issues as well. She has been proving anything is possible if you find yourself committed towards it. In addition to this, some of her illustrations have been published on storybooks for kids too.

‘I’ve been wanting to do my fashion illustration exhibition. It’s still not there but soon though. I mean, I have made a couple of paintings already! It’ll come out soon. Oh, and I love writing!’

Setting up the boutique has been one of the biggest milestones yet. But I strive to make it somewhere globally someday soon too. I believe this is a start for me. I really wish to make something unique and environmentally ethical in the near future. I’d like to make use of natural resources and come up with something. That’s what I’m determined to work on in the upcoming days. The whole Famushu brand is a family thing. Dad helps me with the artworks and printing. Although I take more responsibility with all the work, my mom helps me out with the tailoring too. And then there’s my brother, who has always been such a huge support to me when it comes to decision making in business terms. So this is more of a family thing where we’re all helping each other out. I’ve always wanted to open my own boutique and I’m so glad this happened! Currently we’re supplying beach wear to resorts. We’ll soon be introducing swim wears into the market as well. It’s not imported goods here. 80 – 90% of the items here are all designed by us. I really wish to expand this to jewelries, accessories and shoes too. If you want a fashion brand of our own, you need to stand out. That’s how it works everywhere. Getting there might not be an easy road but you can if you’re really willing to try. Most of the designs available here are all inspired by traditional items and from the culture of Maldives. It’s simple and wearable for everyone.

62 VIBE | ISSUE 12 - 2017 vibetrends.com

The fashion scene in the Maldives is quite an interesting topic to talk about. A fashion designer’s views and inputs to this could be rather crucial. Angel encourages everyone with the enthusiasm for fashion to go on board with it but she also highlights the importance of getting proper education.

There’s actually no fashion industry in Maldives but we have plenty of people who’ve studied fashion designing along with kids who seem very much interested. People are more conscious about it compared to earlier days. This tells us enough that people are interested in fashion and they talk about it. However, I feel we lack an institution here. There are plenty of tailors around and they’re super talented too. But, I think they need a direction in order to go forward artistically and design wise. We can provide small courses and help with the basics along with the know-how and background knowledge; but a proper institution where everything needed is taught and offered will play a vital role in the development of flourishing a young, enthusiastic bunch of fashion designers. This will bring about a good change and actually create the fashion industry which we all would like to have and see here in the Maldives. Fashion itself is an art. It’s just a wearable art making it different.

Angel describes opening up her own boutique as one of the biggest achievements till today. She explains further on how the Famushu brand came to life.

www. famushu. com You can see her pieces on social media and that’s where most of her marketing is done till today. It was a pleasure working with Angel and our best wishes are always with her. We look forward for a day her brand gets an international recognition.
