Editors NOTE Dear Readers,
L
et me first extend the warmest greetings of Ramadan to all our readers celebrating the holy month. The team at VIBE and myself hope this issue will be enjoyable, informative and most of all, inspiring. We certainly enjoyed creating this installment and we’re extremely inspired by the featured creative individuals. Honoring VIBE’s fifteenth cover is one such personality : Fai, he is not only one of the most brilliant drummers that our country has seen, but is also one who has gained international recognition for playing a very rare and unique instrument. He shares his childhood nostalgia and humble journey to stardom, with us. We also sat down with Irufan, most know him as a Maldivian Idol finalist, but his love for music and singing began at a young age. He reveals the struggles that shaped him into who he his today, what inspires and motivates him. The small archipelago which we call home is barely diminutive, in terms of talent and skill. We are blessed in abundance with many creative individuals; who do not just create, but also take the extra mile to make

a positive impact in others lives. Fashion designer Vilee, is doing exactly that - using her sartorial talents to empower women. At a time, when the world, and especially the fashion world is addressing issues on inclusivity of race, size, gender and age; Vilee’s designs for curvier women put her in the list of local designers who are dedicated in focusing on a less addressed necessity. The month of Ramadan is undoubtedly an eventful one - besides the daily prayers and giving back to the community, your evenings would be packed with gatherings of family, friends and colleagues. Our ‘Looks’ section serves you with outfit inspiration to ace the soirées or any occasion. Since Ramadan is synonymous with the joy of indulging in good food with your closest; we have special recipes laid out for you by Nicolas Descriaux, the Executive Pastry Chef from Kuramathi Maldives. We hope you would give his delectable recipes a try. Together with the team at VIBE Maldives, it is with great pleasure that I present you our fifteenth issue.

Q . Let’s begin with your childhood. Any childhood memories you are fond of? I don’t have a musical family background, to be honest – but I’ve always been very enthusiastic about it. It was only recently, when I found out that my great grandfather who was from Kulhudhufushi, was famous for his boduberu skills. Apparently, he was the leader of the pack, back in his days. As I recall, my first instrument was a clapper in my school band. I was in first grade back then. But since, my most favourite childhood memories from school was taking the long route back to my classroom from the restroom. This was just to get a glance of what was happening inside the music room – where the senior students had their band practices. I’ve had a fantastic childhood. It was exceedingly exhilarating. As a child, I was always been brimming with intense curiosity. I usually find myself wondering and daydreaming about something. I notice this trait in my daughter now. Eventually, I made it on the brass band. And I have some delightful memories which I will always treasure. I started playing side drums in grade three or maybe four. The parades were pretty remarkable back then. People were looking forward to it and I marched in the Jamaaluddin school parade. And the times we played some Zero Degree Atoll with a few interesting moves – that was fun! After I joined Majeediyya School, I got the opportunity to witness outstanding artists like Chippe and Ibbe perform. Soon, I picked up the guitar and took lessons from Chippe. I have always been so inspired by them from day one and I aspired to be something close to these people. Some of my best times are from these days too. I loved their music and I am a big fan.
17
PEOPLE
Q . Tell us about your journey as a musician. I think it all started for me when Chippe wanted to start a band back in 2004; which conceived ‘Serenity Dies’. Back then, shows and events occurred a lot more frequent compared to now. And many were exploring different genres of music - the heavy stuff was quite popular among most people. Initially, I was supposed to perform as a guitarist; but somehow ended up as the drummer. We worked on some of our own productions and made an album. Our lyrics focused mostly on the political and social situation in the country. An year after, Mohoj offered me to join his band for resort gigs. I was thrilled! I think this was one big step I took to start as a musician professionally. I started going to Conrad resort on Fridays - that was the only one day I got off from work. I was working as a ground staff at the airport terminal, and it was hectic! However, this finally made me realize that I was slowly getting involved in doing something I absolutely loved and I should devote more time to it. After sometime, I quit my job at the airport and started performing five to six days a week. This did me good and made me happy. Honestly, I don’t really find it challenging to work as a resort musician. I don’t feel like we have that many limitations either. With a positive mindset you can really do anything. It is about believing in yourself. Even the tiniest things that you do out of passion and love will be recognized eventually - only if you never give up on what you love doing. Discover, explore and take the risk. Most of my highlights are all about the few chances that I never decided to give up on. I mean, it really is alright for
18 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
one to fail – even if you fail a few times. Life is a learning process.
Q . How do you balance professional and personal life? It’s true when they say that the life of a resort musician is quite unpredictable. Sometimes, I do find myself in situations where I have to cancel plans and reschedule things due to a sudden gig. It is a bit tricky at times but I can’t complain. My daughter is very young and I do try my best
Photography : Hussain Shiham (Blinx) Retouch: Naafiu (Blinx)
to give the most of my time for my family. I think I’m doing an okay job finding the balance. Probably because my wife is very understanding too. She truly is the best.
Q . What made you start playing the hang drum? That’s rather an interesting story. I discovered it on YouTube. I saw a video of Daniel Waples and I was so electrified! It was so absolutely brilliant. The hang drum throws a melodically percussive vibe and I really wanted to get my hands on one of it! I remember telling my friends about it too but I am not too certain if they took me seriously then. I did my research about the hang drum and found ways on how to order one for myself. It was newly introduced and is a handmade instrument. So it wasn’t easy to get one. It took time and it was a long wait. I self-taught myself and started experimenting. It has been an amazing journey! I found myself discovering new beats and soon started posting videos on my page. Drum-TalkTV featured one of my videos on their Facebook page. Felt really honored. I also got featured on Vanessa Lorenzo’s and on Vic Frith’s Instagram feed too. Vic Frith is one of the biggest brands in drumming. It is a wonderful feeling that you get when people appreciate your hard work. Determination, passion and effort speaks in great volume. I had one of my usual gigs at Reethi rah
resort one day when I noticed a couple who stayed back throughout the entire performance. The lady came to me and praised me. I was ecstatic. I do get such nice feedbacks every now and then. But what was really remarkable about this day was that I soon discovered that the lady was Mrs. Thomann. It was Mr. & Mrs. Hans Thomann sitting there! I’ve been so lucky that I got the chance to speak with them. They also gave me an endorsement. Thomann online store is one of the biggest online stores in Europe and most musicians are very familiar with it. Along with this, one of the biggest accomplishment till today was being featured as the second best hand-pan video of 2016 on Didge Project, New York. The best video gets chosen based on musical technique, composition and cinematography.
Q . What are your top favorite bands or artists these days? I do admire solo artists. A bit of John Mayer and Ed Sheeran keeps me going. I appreciate all kinds of music. I listen to a lot. And I am very fond of real music.
Q . What are your future plans? I do plan on making a hang drum solo album. My idea is to release song after song and finally put them all together. It’s progressing – slowly. Currently, I am very focused on my band, Skyrock. We’ve been doing very well as a band and I look forward to great things with them too.
with him. I was given a Spanish inspired track with a timeline of two days to work on it. Up until that day, Nashid has never seen me perform. I was scared to death that I might not be able to please him with my music. After the recording and seeing how content he was with it, made my day. We spoke for a good couple of hours after that and his words of encouragement and motivation still hits me so hard. It still gives me hope and strength. He asked me never to give up and never to stop. And when he said that he found the type of drummer he was looking for in me – that was the best day ever. I am very grateful for all the blessings in my life. The kind words and support I get from family, friends and everyone. I am forever obliged to the many supporting pillars whom I consider as gems in my life. My father has been constant in my life providing me with all I need since I was a child. My mother and her unconditional love. My beloved wife for making me complete, always.
“I am not the best drummer. Music doesn’t have that. Music is not a sport. It’s a preference.”
The year 2013 was special. I got the chance to work with Fuloo Nashid. I was literally jumping up and down inside, when Mifrah called me asking to work with them on the album; Journey. He is one of biggest inspirations ever and I cherish all the moments I got to spend

Stability amidst the instability: Impact of relationships on mental health by Aisha Ahmad
M
ental disorders refer to a range of different problems generally characterized by some combination of abnormal thoughts, emotions, behavior, or relationships with others. One of the most common mental disorders across the globe is depression, it is the leading cause of sickness and disability across the globe, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) reporting over 300 million sufferers. Mental health disorders have started to be recognized in the Maldives as well, and it is important that we, as a society, contribute to the recognition and importance of mental health through continuing to stay informed, aware, and open-minded. I have experienced the darkness that is depression, and if you told me during my darkest days that I would find a way out of the darkness, let alone that I would find happiness, I would have told you that it was impossible. But I did find a way out of that darkness and I have found happiness. What pulled me out of the pit of depression, you may ask? My family. My friends. Therapy and/or medication are indeed important in treating severe depression, but I can tell you for certain that it was the love and support of my family and friends that had the most impact. The positive impact that healthy relationships have on mental health cannot be overstated. Healthy relationships help people live longer and happier lives, it also gives people a sense of purpose and belonging, and this is important for all, not just for people suffering from mental health disorders. Individuals suffering from depression have said that relationships make them feel stronger, and that the right kind of friends who
are understanding and supportive have provided them with stability through their emotional instability. In fact, relationships are so important to our health, research shows that the impact that lack of healthy relationships has on mental health is comparable to the impact smoking or diabetes has on physical health. In addition, in the longest-running research on human development conducted by Harvard University, it was found that happiness is not a result of wealth, fame, or working hard, but that happiness comes instead from our relationships. While it has been shown that our relationships have the potential to positively impact our lives, it is important to remember that mental health difficulties, such as depression, can influence the way people connect with others and how they
develop relationships. Individuals with depression can find it difficult to interact and connect with others even while they are aware that it could make them feel better. If you have a friend or a family member suffering from depression, given below are a few ways you could try and help them.
‘ We need to evolve with the changes to our community and ensure we do not lose sight of the importance of real relationships in this age of social media and hectic work schedules.’ 21

To help your loved one: • Let them know that you want to help, listen without judgement, and offer support. • Read up and try to find out more about depression. • Encourage them to get professional help if it is available, and offer to go to appointments with them. • If they have been prescribed medication, you could help them take it as needed. Be patient; it can take a few weeks for them to feel better. • Help them with everyday tasks and to have regular eating and sleeping patterns. • Encourage regular exercise and social activities. • Encourage them to focus on the positive, rather than the negative. • If they are thinking about self-harm, or have already intentionally harmed themselves, do not leave them alone. Seek further help from a health-care professional. In the meantime, remove items such as medications and sharp objects.
22 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
At the end of the day, your presence, the fact that you are there to listen to your loved one, could mean the most. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have all the answers, you don’t have to have all the answers, sometimes letting someone be heard could be more powerful and helpful than you could imagine. “Life is beautiful, sometimes it’s messy, and it’s always unpredictable. But it’ll all be okay when you have your support system to help you through it. I hope that if your burden gets too heavy, that you’ll ask for a hand, too”. In loving someone with a mental health disorder, it is also important that you realize that it can be difficult for you as well, that it is okay for you to have days when you struggle, and that you reach out for support when you need it as well.
in where we live, and our reliance on social media. Most of us use social media to connect with our friends and family, however, research shows that although social media does help us connect with others, it is not the same as face-to-face interactions. It is the neurochemical response which happens in the brain during face-to-face interactions that contributes to happiness and wellbeing, and this cannot be attained from social media. We need to evolve with the changes to our community and ensure we do not lose sight of the importance of real relationships in this age of social media and hectic work schedules. We need to ensure we do not take for granted the impact that relationships have on our mental health.
Our community has been changing over the past few decades, from a community where everyone knows each other to one of busy strangers. The community has been impacted by the longer working hours, changing family dynamics, more changes

TIPS FOR HEALTHY & LOVING RELATIONSHIPS SEE THE BEST IN YOUR PARTNER AND THE RELATIONSHIP
As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke mused,
“ There is scarcely anything more difficult than to love one another.” So, what makes a good relationship? Below advices on how to have healthy and loving romantic relationships.
Research on perception and attention shows that we see more of what we look for, so if you’re looking for signs of kindness - that’s more likely to stand out to you. How you think about and interpret your partner’s actions, intentions, and words also affects how you feel and understand a situation with them, which in turn affects how you behave toward them. Try it: Spend a week looking for anything and everything your partner does “right.”
HAVE FUN Couples who engage in exciting and enjoyable activities together have greater relationship satisfaction from before to after the shared activity. Many studies have shown that, couples who play together stay together. Try it: Choose an activity with your partner that you’ve never done together before that you would both find engaging and fun, such as taking dancing lessons or visiting a new place and exploring it.
BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR PARTNER Expressing gratitude to your partner predicts an increase in your relationship satisfaction. The gratitude you feel inside also predicts your partner’s level of satisfaction. Feeling appreciated by your partner seems to increase how much you appreciate him or her in return—which positively affects how much you feel committed to the relationship and want to do things to meet your partner’s needs.
24 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
Try it: Spend time saying “thank you” and letting your partner know how much you truly value him or her. Also, remember to increase the gratitude you actually feel toward your partner, because this also makes a big difference. Reflect on why you appreciate having your partner in your life or what you would miss most if he or she were not in your life.
HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH YOURSELF The relationship you have with yourself is arguably the foundation on which your other relationships are built. High self-esteem predicts better relationship satisfaction, and high self-esteem of both partners is an even better predictor of strong relationship satisfaction. Moreover, people with high self-esteem appear to respond more constructively and positively during conflict when they think their partner is committed to the relationship, whereas people with low self-esteem don’t do this even when they believe their partner is committed. Try it: Like most things, increasing the quality of your relationship can take time. Begin from a place that you can believe. It’s okay if right now you have a hard time believing that you’re a worthwhile person. Start by identifying at least one thing you like about yourself or one thing you’re good at doing. Then, look for other things from that starting point. Remember, more of what you look for tends to pop out, so look for not only what your partner does right, but what you do right.
What else is related to long-term passionate love? Shared affection, and happiness in life.

minath Vileena or Vilee, also well known as ‘Pompoms’ is a rising fashion designer in the Maldives.
Vilee is presenting her newest collection ‘Pure Personality’ for this edition of VIBE. Breaking the mold of designing clothing for size zero figures, Vilee’s jewel-toned collection of ready to wear dresses and blouses are tailored to complement the curvier woman.
28 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
HOW DID IT ALL START? Life wasn’t easy back in the days. We were struggling a lot. That is probably one of the main reasons why I turned to tailoring. But I eventually grew to love it. I am self-taught and started with my own dresses; mostly because I had no one else to do it for me. Soon, my friends and their friends were asking to make their clothes. That was how it started - it has been fifteen years since, and it has been a good run.

WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST? I am always inspired and driven by nature and the people around me. The beauty around me, keeps me going. I like to keep it simple though. People and nature; there is always something about it. Where do you see yourself in the coming years? What are the goals that you want to achieve? I aspire to be someone who helps out many people. I have dreams for myself and for people working in my field. I do wish to have a boutique of my own and have my own brand name running like most designers. But at the same time, I really do want my boutique to feature many other fashion designers along with me. My idea is to set up a place where all local fashion designers can contribute and work side by side. I personally think that this could be a wonderful thing and to see this dream come true would be simply amazing! Fashion designing apart, I see myself doing social work like how I am doing right now. Trying to empower more women and getting involved with some community service will keep my spirits going!
30 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
WHAT ARE YOUR LIMITATIONS WHILE WORKING AS A FASHION DESIGNER? I think we do have a few limitations. Few but major, to be very frank. It is almost impossible to get good materials from Male’. Or even if you do, it is ridiculously overpriced at times. Having to hunt for much needed materials can be a really frustrating thing. I think it’s frequent among most designers to source them from overseas now. Perhaps, it is time to work on this and find a solution. In addition to this, I think I still have to gain more clients. I am not really out there-out there yet although this has been my thing for a good while. Need to work on that, aye? *shy laughs*

‘I do have confidence and faith in all fashion designers here and I deem that an association is crucial.’
HOW DO YOU FIND THE FASHION FIELD IN THE MALDIVES? I feel sorry to say this, but I find it very weak. Of course, we have raw talent here! So many skilled people out there but I feel that we lack the bit where we support each other. It is a bit too competitive now. If we all had better connections and worked together, I reckon everyone can do a lot better than they already are. Each and everyone has their own sense of uniqueness and style in them. Imagine the magnitude it can bring if we leave the unwanted competition behind! I strive to bring the needed change. That’s next on my list!
33
DESIGNER
DO YOU CONSIDER THAT AS A CHALLENGE? IF SO, HOW DO YOU SUGGEST YOU OVERCOME THIS? 34 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
Well, yes! It certainly can be very challenging with the competitiveness among most designers. I’ve always thought about this. Maybe having an association can work and bring solutions too. I always believed that togetherness and team spirit enables us to bring the best out of us. I do have confidence and faith in all fashion designers here and I deem that an association is crucial.
Model : Naba Hair & Makeup : Myke Photography : Hussain Shiham (Blinx) Retouch: Iru (Blinx) Location : Rock Chamber (Hulhumale’)
ANY ADVICE FOR NEWCOMERS TO THE FIELD? As I said before, we do have so many raw talent here in the Maldives. Be it in fashion or any other field. Us, Maldivians; we’re truly blessed in many ways. I never believed that you really need a bunch of certificates to prove your talent or skill. It is always about how passionate you are. And how hard you are willing to work, to achieve your dream. Fashion designing has been a dream for me since the very beginning. I wanted to pursue my studies in it and did start on it as well. But faced many challenges and had to give up my studies at AOD. Yet I never gave up applying the least bit of knowledge I had in me and flourish my skills professionally. I never stopped learning. It is easy to educate yourself these days. Find your way and do it. Find ideas and get inspired. Never give up! Remember, ideas can be cheap. It is how you apply them, that makes a difference!

ANY ACHIEVEMENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT? I’d like to highlight the opportunity I got to experience along with fashion designer Dinesh Chandrasena for a L’officiel shoot with popular Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha. It was a moment I’ll always cherish. I also worked on IIFA Rocks and Art walk fashion show, both held in Srilanka; which was an amazing experience. In addition to this, I worked with designer Manish Malohtra’s team and Vikram Padnis. I am forever grateful for these incredible experiences.
WHAT GOT YOU THIS FAR? My kids. They are truly my strength and everything I do is for them. Being a single mother of three is no joke, really. There are so many emotions involved. Pain, frustrations, smiles and immeasurable amount of love. I am blessed with the best kids ever. They’re ever so kind and understanding and I believe that I am where I am today all because of them. I’d also like to take this chance to thank all who helped me through. I don’t think I’ll have to name them. They already know how special they are. And a massive thank you to VIBE and the amazing team behind it! Much respect for the work you do.

NOW IT’S AFFORDABLE TO TRAVEL Pay for your flight tickets on INSTALLMENTS By Ija
T
here are millions of hardworking people out there, but still can’t afford to pay a large sum of cash at once. The most common method of doing it is by using a credit card, and for those who have a history of paying their debts late or are just starting out, it’s not an alternative. But, then again, what if I told you I may know a solution for that? The micro-loaning industry took a giant leap when Airfordable, a Chicago-based startup website launched its services in December 2015 allowing its users to pay for flight tickets on installments. The process is quite simple: The traveler has to select a flight itinerary and upload a screenshot of it, then pay a deposit of onethird of the total cost, and pay the balance in monthly or biweekly installments until the loan is fully settled, finally Airfordable confirms the flight ticket and e-mails it to the traveler.
38 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
Ok! Here’s how it works: 1. Create a FREE account at
www.airfordable.com
2. Choose your travel dates and submit your itinerary
3. Lock in.
Book your flight tickets by paying nearly one-third of the total cost and pay the remaining balance in installments before your departure date. Airfordable also charges a service fee ranging from 10 to 20 percent based on the total cost of the airfare and prepares a repayment plan. A $295 ticket needed on August 2, 2018, for example, would incur a $112.10 “layaway cost” and then $65.42 each month (April, May and June) through the date of travel.
Unlike getting a loan from a bank or using a credit card, a micro loan from Airfordable does not require a check into one’s bank statement or credit score, a possible deal-breaker for travelers with bad credit. At present, Airfordable allows a maximum airfare of $2,000 per person, and the minimum at $200. Tickets should be purchased no more than 11—and not less than two months in advance in order to allow sufficient time for users to pay. In the event a traveler fails to complete his/ her repayment plan, the flight booking will be canceled and the amount paid to Airfordable will be credited towards future trips.

ARTIST
From struggles to success
An inspiration for all By Ihusana
H
assan Irufaan, or as most people would call him: Zakitte is a humble and hardworking guy. While most of you might recognize him as a musician or a participant of the second season of Maldivian Idol, there is more to him than just that. He loves surfing, skateboarding, water sports, watching movies, standup comedy, basketball, he secretly loves drawing and there is no denying his obvious crush on Rafiyath Rameeza. Just go through his Instagram! And may I note that our interview began and also ended with his declare of love for her singing and timeless beauty. Although it might seem like he is just a normal guy who happened to join a competition that changed his life - it is not the whole story. He survived tough times and we believe that he could be an inspiration to future musicians and give hope to those who need it. At the beginning of the interview, Zakitte mentioned that his career officially began after Maldivian Idol, but let’s see how his interest in music began in the first place!

ZAKITTE: When I was young, I used to watch a lot of music programs and my father used to sing when he was around. Everyone talked about him and complimented him. All the neighbors even formed a band together. So since then, I was really interested in music.
As a musician how did participating in Maldivian Idol impact your career? ZAKITTE: It was the kick start that I needed and I was able to participate in shows that big companies hosted. It was a huge thing; the way people saw you, everything changed. I would say that Maldivian Idol is a great stepping stone and I would recommend it to everyone.
How would you describe your first performance after Idol? ZAKITTE: It was at Artificial Beach, with the Idol band. It was a huge mess and I was very scared. The minute I went up the stage, everyone started yelling to get off ! I didn’t know what to do, and I just told them that I will get off, but after three songs. By the middle

of the first song, somehow, the audience had accepted me and we were all having fun. That encouraged me and gave me strength because I was so depressed back then. It was Ammadey Sir, who got me out of it. He took me with him to perform at resorts and gave me the chance.
How did you take critics? A lot of people must have shared their opinion on how you were performing? ZAKITTE: I did get a lot and I used to be really bad at it! I could not take critics at all. My little brother Amaan took part in Maldivian Idol first and people would criticize him on Twitter and such and I would just bash out on them! But after I took part in Maldivian Idol, I realized that you are giving people the right to constructively criticize you. So now I take it to heart, bad or good and if it is bad you kind of see that it is because you didn’t perform to the level that person wanted you to. You have to find his or her relating point and perform to their expectations.

Before, I hated criticism and was really bad at taking it. But you have to learn to accept it at a certain point.
you have to know a little bit of all type of music and you have to be able to perform them.
What do you think makes you different from other Musicians?
What inspires you?
ZAKITTE: I don’t know *chuckles* that’s a very hard question! I think it’s the fact that… I hate the word ‘talent’. I don’t like that word because I don’t believe in it. I believe in drive and hard work. I hate it when people say “Oh my god! You’re so talented man” but whoever was told that at one point might also be asked “You were so talented, what happened?”. Someone might have a little bit of talent in something but then there needs to be a drive. If you don’t have that what can you do with the talent? Talent is not going to grow by itself. I believe in hard work.
What type of music do you prefer or like to perform to? ZAKITTE: I like performing English songs but I don’t think I have a favorite genre. I can’t really. If you are working in the music industry, I personally think that
ZAKITTE: My mother. After our father left us, she was alone and sometimes we would not even eat. That was the level of life we were living. We would go a week without proper food and we would still go to school and she never let us feel like we weren’t loved. She is our superhero. My mother taught me to not give up. I got inspiration from a lot of friends too. One of them is Shafai. We had a small band and together we even participated in a local art and music festival called Kattihivvaru. He would always say that he wants to be a great person and that he wants to make a career out of music. And right now he is one of the best young drummers in the Maldives. I got a lot of inspiration from him and he was this little guy! He showed me how to be driven and hardworking. That’s what I want to be. My fiancé is a very inspiring person to me. I don’t know why but she reminds me a lot of my mother, through the courage she shows against impossible odds.
I know this guy at the airport, I think his name is Hishan, who in his free time just takes care of disabled children. He takes them out, takes them to the sea, feeds them and does all this wholeheartedly. Affan, he is an inspiration and a huge influence. I would like to rock a show to his level one day. Ed Sheeran, One Knight Stand, Mezzo, Shalabee Ibrahim, Ibrahim Aman, Haisham Thaufeeg, Nashidhbe; they are also very inspiring to me.
Struggles that you have faced and how you overcame them? ZAKITTE: The struggles that you face reflects who you become. Back then, it was really important to come from a proper family. We struggled to get recognition. As a musician, the difficulties were like not having enough money to be able to buy a guitar and such. I got my first proper guitar after the end of Maldivian Idol when Shalabee gave me the guitar that he got. If you want to be a musician, it’s not going to be easy. It is going to have a lot of rough

patches and you’re going to make a lot of enemies. There are going to be a lot of people who would not want you to come out in the industry because you might be a threat or a joke, or because you are getting in their way. One of the biggest struggles that you face will be earning money by playing music. You might be a really good musician, but since people don’t know you, they can’t hire you. Because I was taking care of my family, I had to pause my music career for a very long time. Since grade 9, I’ve been working to support my family. It will be very difficult to get over the feeling that you’re not good enough. Because people will put you down and people talk about you behind your back. Even if you do something good, they will. If you do something bad, they will double it. So just do it anyways! It’s not easy to pursue music and you have to have someone to get you through all that and encourage you. It could be your mother, brother, wife, anyone! And I’m actually very proud to have overcome so many things to reach this point from where I was before. To overcome a bad reputation, learning that these good friends that I thought I had were not and more. And coming from a poor background; my mother didn’t go to work, father was always in jail and it was our uncle that took care of us. I remember one day when my father was released, he threw all of us out
of the house. It was raining heavily that night and I was not even wearing clothes. It was messed up. Whatever you go through, use it and harness it. You have to use all those emotions and channel it, into your music and people will accept you. It’s not going to be easy. But come out of it and embrace it. It’s worth it. It’s beautiful.
What is a quote that you live by? ZAKITTE: “Adhi Okay Vaane” (It will get better).
How would you describe your journey from when you started till now? ZAKITTE: It’s been a rush! It actually feels very normal now for me to just go to a resort and perform there for an international audience. But sometimes after the end of the gig, I would think, “Oh my god! I am living my dream to be a musician! I am earning my money through music!” I never thought I would reach this point at this age. After Idol, I went into a dreary state. I felt like a failure and it was constant failures, one after the other. I felt like my whole family was a failure, my brother was a failure and this whole thing was coming down on me because I failed miserably. The whole country hated me… well, most of the country. But, I have been trying to change it slowly. Imagine me at a wedding. I would have the opportunity

to change a lot of people’s mind. Just like that, slowly I have been changing more and more people’s mind about me. At these weddings, people have said that they cannot believe it is me because of how much my performance has changed! *laughs heartily*. I do admit that Dhivehi music is not my best side. But now I would proudly say that sometimes I like my singing too! *with a huge smile* It’s been unreal.
So what are your future plans? ZAKITTE: I don’t want to be like someone and I’m only out here to compete with myself. I want to be that musician who people would say is very professional at his work but you can have a really good time with him as well! The dream is to be a well-respected, top-level musician in the Maldives. So this year I am planning to publish three songs, sometime in March, on October 10th and the last song will be published on 31st December.
Do you have any advice for upcoming musicians? ZAKITTE: Stop looking for fame, I made that mistake. Stop looking for money because that will come when the time is right. But for now, just focus on your work. Put the work in and live. Live your life to the fullest and do stupid things, go on dates, have fun, sing to girls, sing to boys, everyone sing to everyone! And learn that when people give their opinion, if it’s not constructive, don’t think too much of it. And don’t do drugs man. It will ruin you, I’ve seen enough of it.
Do you have anything else you would like to add? ZAKITTE: I would like to thank a few people. I would like to thank the three most beautiful women in the world. My mother, my best friend and my fiancé. And everyone who helped me work towards where I am today. Ali Shaan, Fizan, Haamim, Yaafiu, Haibe, Moosa Samaau, Mr. Dhamika and the list goes on! I would also like to thank my biggest inspiration Raafiyath Rameeza and Ismail Affan! Last but not the least, I appreciate and would like to give special thanks to those who were and are still part of Team Zakitte and anyone who has helped Team Zakitte. BEAUTY
A SIMPLE GUIDE TO CLEANING YOUR MAKE-UP BRUSHES YOU SHOULD BE CLEANING YOUR BRUSHES MORE OFTEN THAN YOU THINK.
Your make-up brushes are the backbone of your beauty kit. Cleaning residual make-up, dirt and oils off your brushes should be an essential part of your beauty routine. Build-up of dirt and oils on your brushes can cause acne breakouts and possibly rashes called dermatitis.
GIVE YOUR BRUSHES A WEEKLY CLEAN! If you are a make-up artist or someone who wears make-up often; then make sure to clean your brushes after each use. For those who use make-up occasionally, it is
enough to wash your brushes with shampoo once a month and use a brush cleanser for weekly cleaning.
A STEP-BY-STEP BRUSH CLEANING METHOD 1. Squeeze a dollop of gentle shampoo into a glass and fill it with warm water. 2. Swirl your brushes in the water and gently rub the bristles to further remove the gunk. 3. Rinse with clean water and carefully squeeze the water out. 4. Lay them flat on a clean towel and let
them dry. 5. For daily cleaning, use a brush cleaner. 6. Pour a small amount of the liquid into a cup and dip your brush to saturate. 7. Lightly dab it on a paper towel which will absorb the cleanser, taking the dirt with it.
DISHWASHING LIQUID IS YOUR FRIEND The most potent cleanser for your brushes is one that you might have at home dishwashing liquid literally removes everything and anything. Just fill a cup with warm water and add a few drops of liquid. Swish it around and voila! It also works for makeup sponges. Just
let it soak for a few minutes, in a glass of dishwashing liquid mixed with water. Next, rinse them with warm water, dab on a paper towel and repeat. Lastly, place it in the microwave for a few seconds (make sure to keep an eye on it!) to get rid of bacteria.
LOOK FOR THE SIGNS! IT MIGHT BE TIME TO REPLACE YOUR BRUSHES As soon as you notice your brushes are not getting as squeaky clean as they used to, it might be time to replace them. It is also important to check for shedding. As long as your brushes are not shedding,
48 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
have a funky smell, or are severely discolored, they can last a lifetime. A bonus tip: Another great option for cleaning your brushes is an electronic brush cleaner.

EASY RULES TO A HEALTHIER BODY
1. KEEP UP WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE
5. TURN WORKING OUT INTO A SOCIAL EVENT.
even when you’re on the road. If you are traveling, make sure to bring your headphones along and have a gym playlist ready, find some time for a workout and just do it.
Try to work out together with friends and then plan a nice breakfast or dinner afterwards. You could indulge in a hearty meal, guilt-free after a good calorie burning session.
2. HIT THE GYM WITH EXTRA MOTIVATION.
6. EASE INTO A FITNESS ROUTINE WITH SHORT BURSTS OF ACTIVITY.
Working out with a partner helps to give that extra push you need on days when you feel like lazing at home. You both do not need to do the same training, but sweating it out with your partner or friend would make that usual grueling routine a fun and enjoyable one. Try challenging each other with a plank workout.
3. CREATE A REGULAR WORKOUT SCHEDULE Get your body moving two to three times a week. To set your mood for the day, start your day-off or weekend with a good workout.
4. TONE YOUR ABS WITHOUT FANCY EQUIPMENT. With every exercise, you should always be using your abs - even when you do squats. Try to feel your core with every movement. You can do it in your room or on the beach using a mat.
54 VIBE | issue 15 - 2018 vibemaldives.com
You might not be always motivated, but you have to push yourself out of your chair or bed -because the post-workout feeling is great and gives an energetic start to your day. So just start somewhere, say to yourself that you have only 15 minutes and take it comes from there. Once you become regular, exercising for even an hour would become an enjoyable part of your day.
7. SNACKS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND. When you work out a lot, you need to eat enough. It helps to have healthy snacks with you, like your favorite dark chocolate bar or nuts. And don’t forget coconut water!
