s we welcome a whole new year with the fourteenth installment of VIBE Maldives, there is so much to look forward to and in the same vein be thankful for - the people, events and experiences.

Angel Shuja Editor-In-Chief

Mariyam Waheedha, VIBE’s editorin-chief for thirteen strong editions is irrefutably one of the most iconic personalities of our times. We had the honor of having such a brilliant mind and a beautiful personality through all these years. Whilst her words are immortalized in VIBE’s issues, her presence will always be felt amongst the team. We wish her only the best of everything that the future has to offer. Our December issue is quintessential in defining a new era of modest-dressing that has become a global phenomenon. The power of evocative imagery never fades away. The clothing, manner of styling, its colors, a model’s pose or the setting in a photograph can unfold a thousand tales. We sat down to chat with our cover girl Sama; who is not only a talented singer but is one of the many youth who wear the hijab with pride and joy. Modest fashion is

SAMKO A DILIGENT & ASPIRING SINGER

by Ihusana Thoufeeg We are delighted to introduce a very strong, optimistic and ambitious singer who is also the cover girl for this VIBE issue! Sama (better known as Samko), was on the track to starting her career as a child by acting and singing the way that the characters did in Cinderella, Snow White and more. She loved it and according to her, her whole house was her stage, especially in front of the mirror, and her family was her audience. But all this while, she never expected she would become a professional singer in the future. It was in grade 2 when Samko’s teacher pushed her mom to make her participate in an inter-class singing competition. The results were; earning a place in the top 10 and the 2nd place in the whole competition. This was her first public performance and the point where she developed an interest. She was encouraged by her family and teachers to pursue singing but she didn’t truly understand what she was doing or knew how to explore it. She performed on stage just like how she would sing and dance in front of the mirror. It was a hobby and she continued to participate in more competition during her teenage years. Afterwards, she focused on her studies, but unable to let go of her passion she auditioned in the Ehandhaanuga Retro and got selected. This was the actual kickstart to her career as this was when she caught the public’s attention.

16 VIBE | ISSUE 14 - 2017 vibemaldives.com

We began the interview with an appreciative note from Samko, “This is a very exciting magazine and it made me very happy when I got the chance to be on the cover of a magazine like VIBE.”

VIBE: When was the last performance that you gave? SAMKO: On 15th September at the SAARC Youth Summit 2017 in India. VIBE: Do you prefer to sing in Dhivehi or English?

VIBE: Do you get nervous on stage? SAMKO: (Without any hesitation) No. When I got on stage for the first time, I couldn’t see anything because of the light and it was blurry. But even from all that, I saw my mum sitting in the audience, with a huge smile. I forgot all my nervousness in a second. My mum still sits in the audience as always with a huge smile in a lot of my shows. That’s what I recall every time I get on stage now. I get more nervous singing in the studio than singing in front of a crowd. It’s very hard, because in a studio this one person is listening to your voice with full concentration but on a stage, in front of a crowd, there are other noises and a lot more people.

VIBE: What is music to you? What does it mean to you? SAMKO: I didn’t know what it was at the beginning and I just listened to songs and tried to copy the exact way it was sung. But now, it is a completely different world for me - like, all my stress goes blank once I step into a studio and start singing. So basically music is life. My happy place.

SAMKO: If it is a song I’m fine with anything! I know how to sing in Dhivehi, English and Hindhi. It doesn’t really matter what language it is. If it is a song I will sing happily. I recently sang a Hindhi and a Philippine song for the Mithuru Album. VIBE: So you mostly sing covers? SAMKO: Yes. I have sung original songs as well. Very recently for Niuma’s Album and on Emme Reethi show. VIBE: Is there any specific musician that you would like to meet and jam with? SAMKO: I have met a lot of professional local musicians and composers and I did get the opportunity to work with most of them. So, I would like to meet Arijit Singh and Ed Sheeran. Arijit Singh because he has a very different and a very soothing voice. He is very unique and he has what a musician should have. I chose Ed Sheeran, not because of his love songs but his story from when he was younger and how he got to where he is now. His journey and what he has created for himself.

VIBE: Do you face any challenges being a singer? SAMKO: I challenge myself to be someone

better than I am today and to improve. Everyone is talented but everyone cannot sing at the same level. Even I might not be able to sing at the same level as another person and that person might sing a lot better than I do. I believe that whatever level that anyone is in, they should try to develop themselves.

VIBE: What’s your biggest achievement? SAMKO: My biggest achievement in this field is an award that I did not expect; Arutha Awards. I won it along with Mira. The awards were for musicians who were new and had gotten the most recognition from the public. VIBE: Are you working on anything right now? SAMKO: Yeah. I am trying to publish my own video song. And some cover songs.

I challenge myself to be someone better than I am today and to improve. I believe that whatever level that anyone is in, they should try to develop themselves.

VIBE: Did you give a name to the song? What’s the song about? Did you write the music and the lyrics? SAMKO: It’s still at the very initial stage.

It is not a love song, not a happy song and not a sad song either. It’s somewhere in the middle of all of that. It will be very different and unique.

VIBE: What is it about? SAMKO: Life. VIBE: So what are your plans for the future apart from the previously mentioned song? SAMKO: There is a lot of work that I need to do. Everyone has their own style and I try to maintain my own and improve that. Since I don’t know how to play any instruments, the main goal right now is to learn how to play the piano. If a singer learns to play an instrument, it will become a great advantage. Also, I have always wanted to go abroad to show my talent, with my own lineup. I have been to Malaysia and performed a Dhivehi song in a group. And recently I had a solo performance in India, which was huge for me. But I still want to perform abroad with my own lineup with this look (wearing the hijab). I don’t think a Maldivian has ever performed like that.

17

PEOPLE

VIBE: How can we see / listen your

work?

SAMKO: You can search Sama on YouTube or visit my Facebook Page: Sama Samko. VIBE: What would you like to say to those musicians who are just starting in this field? SAMKO: The music field in the Maldives

has less chances so a few people get them. But there are a lot of talented people. There are people younger than me, who play an instrument, sing, and have their own lineup. They are so talented but they don’t have facilities here. There is a school but it is not facilitated to what we actually want. It is at a certain level and if you want to go higher than that you have to do it yourself. Most of the kids watch YouTube and teach themselves. So the people who just start, if they don’t try really hard, they don’t have a chance. I mean you do have to work hard, things don’t just happen, but you have to try very hard and not give up. You will have to learn and sing more too. Chances will come to you when you show your effort. The reason why I got chances to go abroad and such is because I showed my performances and talent. So if you have a talent show it.

VIBE: What do you see in the future for the music industry in the Maldives? And what do you want to see?

Because I wear the hijab, I do face discriminations from abroad. It makes me sad but they don’t accept it. So that’s what I want to challenge now. Girls who wear the hijab gets fewer chances and opportunities. That’s not how it should be. If someone has a talent and if that person wants to do something with it, they should be given the opportunity.

VIBE: What was the most memorable

or exciting thing that happened in your career?

SAMKO: The whole journey and all the shows have been really fun. I cherish every bit of it. 18 VIBE | ISSUE 14 - 2017 vibemaldives.com

SAMKO: I want to see many more shows. It’s not only Maldivian Idol and it’s not only Ehandhaanugaa which is only shown in Ramadan. There needs to be something that always continues. We have so many singers, musicians and bands. There are people who play resort music that nobody knows of but they are so good and talented. Like Detune Band. They have been performing for a very long time but people found out who they are only recently. They have created their own thing and they are leading this field. So if anyone wants to be recognized in this field, you have to build it and work for it yourself. It is a challenge and it is not easy. VIBE: Anything further more to add? SAMKO: I want the media to develop in regards to the entertainment sector for the artists. And for people who are just starting, do not be embarrassed. Everyone gets criticized and it is needed sometimes to improve oneself.

Sharpen Your Vision for Success

The Jigsaw Puzzle

A

s we start off, our vision might look like a difficult puzzle. We might not even know how to begin. Even if someone left the box top as a guide, how does each piece fit together? At this stage, we can either give up and watch TV, or pick up two puzzle pieces and see how they fit. We can see the pieces now, but can’t see the road. How do we move forward? By picking up one piece at a time and trying to connect it with another in a way that fits perfectly. Then just add a third.

Acts to Clear The Vision “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” - Steve Jobs -

20 VIBE | ISSUE 14 - 2017 vibemaldives.com

“ Ask, What does my heart want ? Purpose is a matter of the heart. It’s discovered through feeling, not thinking. The heart will chatter if only you ask it what it wants. Heart Institutes have investigated the heart-brain connection and discovered that the heart has its own “little brain” and neurons that send more signals to the big brain than vice-versa. These signals influence higher cognitive functioning, and can help to think clearly and make effective decisions. How to ask effectively? First, focus the attention on the heart, and imagine that breath flowing in and out of this area. Next, activate a positive feeling. After a minute of this, put yourself into a state of coherence, then simply ask, What does my heart want?

Whether focused on life goals or your next project, let’s get clear on the end result to succeed faster.

A vision for life is crucial to realize the highest potential in it. Most of us have had fuzzy glimpses of our brightest futures, but few give it enough thought to see the picture clearly. Let’s fix that.

Assess, What are my strengths? It’s time to engage the head, so take out a pen and paper. Make an honest assessment of your skills and experiences. Write down: What am I good at? Recognize your strengths; they are signposts that help you to create the best vision for your life. Where are my weaknesses? If you have the artistic ability of singing, don’t choose a path that requires you to master graphic design. Hire it out, or avoid that road entirely. How do I spend my time? Most people automatically do what they enjoy, at least in their spare time. If that means surfing every weekend, then your vision probably shouldn’t have you sitting indoors all day. Be a dreamer, but keep your feet planted.

Build planning time into your life

Motivation is like this…

Get off the fence and ACT Inspiration Motivation

“If you talk about it, it’s a dream, if you envision it, it’s possible, but if you schedule it, it’s real.” - Tony Robbins Nobody accomplishes anything of value in one sitting, so it’s strange to expect to know what the ideal life looks like after daydreaming about it once in the shower. If you want to discover your life purpose, schedule time to work on this puzzle.

Put your goals on paper; review them regularly Setting goals is an ongoing process, not something you do once and forget about. Do this exercise every New Year, and at the start of each quarter:

Action

Ask, What were my goals last year? What did I do well? What did I not do well?

Repeat

List your accomplishments and celebrate them. Ask, What would I like to improve and learn? Ask, What are my goals for the coming year/quarter? What small steps will I take to get there?

It’s about time you made a vision board Our thoughts create magical brain waves that radiate into the universe and materialize what we think about. I’ve seen zero science to explain this, but all successful people swear that what you think is what you get.

It works because when we think about something, we train our reticular activating system – a piece of our brain that decides what we focus on - to look out for opportunities to get that shiny carrot we’re obsessing over. Thinking about an iPhone X? You’ll see them everywhere. The more we think (or better yet, feel) about something, the more our subconscious mind - responsible for at least 90 percent of brain activity - will work to find a way to create that thing. We can tap into this universal principle with a vision board, a cork-board of images that have things we want - pictures that we’ll see every day, and which will serve as a constant reminder to our subconscious brain to get busy manifesting our vision. This might not be a new concept for you, but have you made one yet?

Take the first step Stare at each puzzle piece as long as you want, but they won’t un-jumble themselves. It’s time to pick up the first pieces and try to fit them together. The vision doesn’t ask much, except: Try some stuff. Volunteer at an NGO, go diving with a colleague from the office; put your designs online and see if anyone responds. Motivation is like this… Get off the fence and ACT > Inspiration > Motivation > Action > Repeat It sounds simple because it is. Pick up a piece, any piece.

Love whatever comes You’ve sharpened your vision. Now accept that reality will never look the same. As you move towards turning that dream into a reality, don’t be so inflexible that you miss opportunities to create something slightly different and even better. Love whatever comes. No life in history unfolded as planned. Despite the uncertainty, plenty of men and women have managed to lead exceptional lives of prosperity and fulfillment. Be flexible. Be patient. Playing the long game means adjusting along the way. Start sifting through your pieces.

by Maako

How it all began: ‘It all started while I was in school. Grade 9 - if I remember correct. I grew up seeing my mom and sister stitching. I think that’s probably how I developed an interest towards it. I always looked for ways in which I can be a bit more creative in styling and fashion. It was interesting and I was slowly becoming very passionate about it. I first started doing dresses for my classmates. I was so young then but I think that’s where people started getting to know about me. In time, I was able to do a dress for the cover girl model on a new video CD which was released then. It was common during those days and I was very pleased with the opportunity.’

The process and greatest inspirations:

Model : Camie Hair & Makeup : Myke Photography : Hussain Shiham (Blinx) Retouch : Irufan (Blinx) Location : KINZA

‘There came a break in between. It was only during 2012 when I started all over again with fashion designing as a career. I realized how much I wanted to do fashion designing. I have been putting more and more effort in to this and started investing my time on it since then. I feel like I’m inspired daily with a lot around me. And I’ve really been enjoying it till today. But I think it’s safe to say that my mom and sister have been the greatest inspiration for me. I mean, I started with the very old machineries from back in the days which belonged to my mom. I was so keen on learning from her but later on got self-taught with more techniques.’

Achievements and milestones: ‘During the past years, I’ve contributed to the industry by taking part in various fashion events. I think bride show and designer week are my main highlights. The experience I gain from it and how much I learn can never be put in words. And the love that I receive. Currently, I am more focused in creating beautiful pieces for the ones wearing hijab. I really want to make a difference for the ones wearing the hijab. Two collections have already been out in collaboration with Hijab Maldives. I see that as one of my main accomplishments so far.’

37

DESIGNER

Personal favorite: ‘Bank of Maldives Annual Award Ceremony night. A girl came to me wanting to make her dress for this event and was completely clueless about what exactly she wants. Got me thinking and finally had a design sketched. I was so satisfied with the end product. I think that was my best and most favorite work, personally.’ ‘It’s always a delight to know that your customer is happy with your work. Usually, my designs speak of simplicity. To me, simplicity is about elegance and class. It is simply the best outfit one can wear. I think the simpler it gets, the more beautiful you look. But I do absolutely love doing all sorts of time consuming work which can be very exhausting. I mean, I can never say no to lace working or just sitting the entire day trying to perfect some hand embroidery. I really do find joy in doing all that too.’

Future goals: ‘I aspire to be able to own a place where you can come in to not only pick up your outfit, but to walk out perfectly dressed and ready for the occasion or event. I’ve always had a spot for make-up and hijab styling. Beauty all in one, to be honest. Of course, I dream big too. Maybe not now, but soon. I do know I will work towards achieving all of it in the coming days, gradually. ‘I am fully responsible for my work. If the client seems to be even a little bit dissatisfied, I ensure I get it fixed right on time. I’ve also been doing well with time ever since the beginning. My clients are very confident that I will finish on time. That’s probably one reason why I’ve been maintaining my regular clients. It really is a good feeling too.’

Fashion Scene in the Maldives:

Model : Dheena Hair & Makeup : Myke Photography : Hussain Shiham (Blinx) Retouch : Irufan (Blinx) Location : KINZA

‘I get very thrilled to see people so enthusiastic and keen towards the fashion scene here in the Maldives now. Things have been improving and it really is so much better now. Sense of hijab styling in most girls are so good these days it genuinely makes me so happy. It’s evident that we have so many new comers in this industry with real passion and they all deserve a hearty welcome. But if I’m to ever pass a piece of advice to anyone, I probably would want to ask them to never give the chance of humiliating yourself or your model. Give it your best shot and design accordingly to what’s best for the model. It’s crucial to make use of your skills and keep improving every day, really. I’ve a bunch of people who I have the utmost respect towards in this industry too. To name a few, I always thought Shamla’s designs are so perfectly done. And it is so nice to see young faces like Raidha reaching new levels too. With sincere interest, anyone can really do this!’

41

DESIGNER

Anything further more to add: ‘Fashion designing is also about a lot of time, effort and dedication. It’s definitely not an easy job. It gets tiring at times but this has always been so close to my heart. I feel it’s a must for me to at least do a little bit of work almost every day. I’ve received an enormous amount of great love and support throughout from both family and friends. But there’s no one like my husband. I’m here today all because of him. He never failed to be there for me and I’m forever grateful for that.’

WORLD’S BEST PLACES TO TRAVEL IN 2018 By Ija, (www.theislandlogic.com)

A

new year is approaching, which means it’s time to start looking for your next adventure to cross off a few more destinations from your 2018 travel bucket list. Today, travelers are more aware than ever of all the world has to offer. It’s exciting to confront all the possibilities — but

Oʻahu, Hawaii

.1

Oʻahu is certain to cast a spell on all your senses. It has everything; verdant rain forests, expansive ocean views, sandy beaches; spectacular ridge-hikes, plus so much to do. The island out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is home to Pearl Harbor and proudly maintains its own identity apart from the US mainland. World-renowned for its genuinely large waves, the North Shore is the rural neighbor of the rapidly sprawling Honolulu. Oahu maybe Hawaii’s most packed island, but its locals of different ethnic mixes, sun-seekers from the mainland, surfers from all over the globe — makes it unlike any other place in the world.

Oʻah Haw u, aii

44 VIBE | ISSUE 14 - 2017 vibemaldives.com

daunting, too. For the past two years, at the end of each year, I have curated a list of the best places to travel in the coming year. Some of them were chosen because timing could have never been better for an affordable family holiday. Some made the list because

Samarkand, Uzbekistan

.2

Jeju Island, South Korea

.4

Just off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, Jeju Island pulls in holiday makers in huge numbers. Featuring Hallasan, a dormant volcano and the tallest mountain in South Korea that has an altitude of 1,950 meters above sea level. The island has a humid subtropical climate, warmer than the rest of the country, with four unique weather seasons. There are plenty of adventures for everyone on the island, such as climbing the archetypal tuff cone Seongsan Ilchul-bong, also known as the ‘Sunrise Peak, rising straight from the sea, to watch the sun rise from the ridge of a crater. For a less strenuous experience, zigzag the Jeju Olle trails and explore tangerine-trimmed country roads. The ocean is never far away, so plunge into the blues to see corals in brilliant pinks, ravaging reds, and dazzling oranges just like the sunsets you chase.

Jamestown, Saint Helena

.5

Luang Prabang, Laos

St Helena, the faintest flourish of green on the big blue canvas of the Atlantic Ocean, is one of our planet’s most isolated speck of land. Jamestown, it’s capital, is neatly wedged in the steep sides of a narrow ravine. This seemingly lost island in the middle of the South Atlantic was where Napoleon Bonaparte spent his final days in exile, but for intrepid travelers that’s part of its eccentric charm. In October 2016, a long-awaited airport was built with a weekly flight operating from Johannesburg - opening the country to the world. There is so much more here for the traveler – hike past soaring crags and through alpine meadows, take to the seas by boat, or explore historic villages, chatting with welcoming Saints (locals) at each passing.

Nestled in the sacred confluence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan, Luang Prabang radiates serenity and splendor, with its mix of world-class comfort and spiritual healing. The tiny mountain kingdom aged over a millennium is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 and is endowed with a legacy of ancient red-roofed Theravada Buddhist temples, French–Indochinese shophouses and royal mystique. It conjures up the ancient image of Laos – streets of ochre, turquoise row colonial houses and swaying bamboo trees, hundreds of saffron-robed Buddhist monks marching through the mornings to the sounds of the temple bells. Most visitors spend only a few days during a whistle-stop tour of Laos; however, Luang Prabang is best savored at leisurely pace.

Unpassable coniferous forests stalked by tigers and grizzly bears, unforgiving winters that never end, never thaws. Prepare for contrasts and extremely icy conditions, from glaciers to underground clubs and cafes, contemporary art museums to gentle forest hikes. It is the perfect destination for travelers who appreciate the true beauty of untouched landscapes, its visitors who possess the willingness to brave it are rewarded with an insight into this inimitable region – more importantly – receive a dose of the locals’ legendary hospitality.

Tbilisi, Georgia

.8

Shiraz, Iran

Tucked in a river valley between the North and South Caucasus Mountains, Tbilisi is the engine driving Georgia’s economy and the country’s capital. The fascinating old town boasts vibrant, winding alleyways and narrow streets, wooden balconies and vine-draped colonnades. Although it has welcomed visitors for hundreds of years, a lot of the country’s picturesque scenery still remains untouched. There has never been a better time to go, either; with more international flights operating than before, restaurants and cafes serving ever better food, up-todate accommodation options from backpacker hostels to five-star hotels, chic clubs and bars, and modern public transport. It’s Mediterranean vibe and balmy climate ensures that any visit here is one that will always be treasured.

.9

As the spiritual home to a thousandyear old craft of Persian rug weaving, Shiraz, the cosmopolitan and historical city of Iran oozes art. It has several art galleries and museums showcasing the best of the Iranian cultural heritage, and takes pride as the famed birthplace of the country’s heroes. It’s also home to buildings decorated with intricate mosaics, well-manicured rose gardens, Islamic calligraphy, and so much more. Despite its history, etched on exquisite mosques and found in remnants of the ancient world, Shiraz has plenty to offer for everyone.

Valletta, Malta

.10

Valletta, Malta’s lilliputian capital has been off the tourist radar for years. Surrounded by the towering bastion walls with soul-flipping views of the Mediterranean sea, it maybe small, but it’s a true cultural capital packed with rich, historic sites and was once known as a World Heritage City and a European Art City. There’s so much to take in, as the city is easy to traverse. A walk from one end to other through the narrow streets takes about half an hour, so there is time to relax while sightseeing. Whether you’re after a city break, a gastronomic journey, sun chasing, a high-octane party week or simply a warm welcome for families and couples, Malta can satisfy everyone.

BEAUTY

MAKE-UP Trends YOU NEED TO KNOW! TWO-TONE LIPS Bottom lip is ever-so-subtly a darker color than top lip. This looks best with a stain, for that worn-for-a-while, more natural finish. FEATHERY LASHES Full, false lashes on your top lash line invariably make your eyes look larger and more awake. Keep the rest of your makeup palette neutral for a look that’s modern, rather than overdone. BROWN LIPS Stop trying to fight it: The ‘90s are back. And that means shades of brown are a must-have for lips this season. Try a chestnut shade for a flattering look that doesn’t feel dated. BRONZER AS BLUSH You probably know by now that a warm bronzer isn’t the right choice for contouring — but it is the right choice when it comes to trying a new shade of blush. In order to keep the look modern, just make sure it isn’t shimmery.

that leans a little towards a brown looks gorgeous on a multitude of skin tones JEWEL-TONE SMOKEY EYES Smoky eyes are always a favorite, but applying jewel tones like blue, emerald and indigo bring out your eyes and adds a 60’s make-up feel to your face. NOTICEABLE LOWER LASHES Runways showcased this look in the most extreme way: drawn-on lower lashes. Get a more wearable version of the trend by trying a waterproof, smudge-proof mascara made especially for your bottom eyelashes. TWO-TONE SHADOW Combine a colorful shade on your top lid with a smoky black shadow on your bottom lash line for a two-toned look that’s sexy and modern. BRIGHT BERRY LIPS A hot or deep pink is the perfect way to brighten up your look. Wearing next-tonothing on your lids and cheeks keeps the look in line for daytime.

METALLIC EYES Eyes can look mesmerizing thanks to a coppery shimmer all around upper and lower lids. It’s made even more dramatic by lush lashes and black eyeliner.

SMUDGED LINER If you find that your pencil liner gets a little smudgy by the middle of the day, don’t wipe it off — just embrace it, because this ‘90s grunge look is trending like crazy.

CASUAL RED LIPS A red lip as the centerpiece of a polished make-up look is classic, but it can also awaken an otherwise low-key make-up with a little smudgy eyeliner.

LIP GLOSS The classic lip product is finally back in style.

SUNSET EYES Orange may sound like a hard color to pull off, especially on the lids, but a shade

I

f you’ve dreamed of channeling your inner rock star into a fitness plan, it’s time to POUND. Created by two female drummers, , the pound workout fuses cardio interval training with drumming to provide a challenging and heart-pumping workout. After taking classes at my local gym, I’m hooked! Anyone who thrives off the group fitness environment or needs loud music to stay motivated needs to try this class ASAP. It moves fast: From start to finish, lively, heart-pumping movements and upbeat tunes keep the workout feeling fresh. There’s no holding an uncomfortable pose for an extended period of time; the class is always moving, always changing, and always pushing the body to its limits. Time seems to fly so quickly! It moves from warm-up to cool down in just 45 minutes. It’s a full-body workout: While certain group fitness classes tend to target particular

areas of the body, POUND offers a full-body workout and targets common trouble spots. A huge part of the class is performed in a squat position. The constant up-and-down drumming targets your inner and outer thighs, butt, and core. And those drumsticks aren’t just for show; at one-fourth pound per stick and a little shorter than the standard length, they’re perfectly designed to maximize your arm workout. You’ll blow off steam: After a long day, there aren’t a few things as exhilarating than grabbing a pair of drumsticks and being able to POUND out your stress. Whether you’re sitting down doing mat work or up on your feet jumping to a new track, everything seems more tolerable — and more fun! — When you’re banging on the floor with a pair of neon green drumsticks.

W

e are pretty sure that you use moisturizers and exfoliate skin every night, but one piece of the puzzle is often overlooked: DIET. And you can actually get better skin in just a week (or weeks) through consuming these key natural ingredients. After all, you are what you eat.

GET YOUR SKIN IN SHAPE by NEW YEAR WITH THESE BEAUTY FOODS

LEMONS Begin your day with some hot water and lemon. It detoxifies the body by helping your digestive system and liver eliminate waste quickly. Continue drinking this throughout the day, and squeeze some lemon juice into salads and green juices.

CHIA SEEDS These antioxidant-rich seeds are packed with minerals and fiber - the perfect balance of essential fatty acids, which helps give that “glow.” Sprinkle them into smoothies and fruit salads, or soak them in almond milk overnight for a satisfying dessert.

SPINACH This leafy green is high in Vitamin A, necessary for growth in healthy skin and hair. Spinach is also loaded with Vitamin C, imperative for the building and maintenance of collagen, making it an essential addition to any meal, juice, or smoothie.

SWEET POTATOES, Adding these betacarotene-rich starches into your daily diet can actually combat lackluster complexions. This is due to the skin-brightening combination of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which work to neutralize cell tissue-damaging free radicals that cause the dreaded dulling effect. Sweet potatoes are also rich in biotin, which stimulates hair and nail growth.

PINEAPPLE, when your skin needs to look amazing, this fruit is a wonder food and tastes incredible. Pineapple benefits skin by improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and removing toxins from the body. What’s more, it also helps in the production of collagen.

DATES are a perfect sweet treat and high in fiber to aid in cleansing. They are rich in copper, which is an important mineral that helps the body absorb iron, form collagen and red blood cells. Plus, they make for a great sugar alternative in baking and cooking.

ALMONDS, whilst you probably already know that almonds are a healthy snack, they are also a beauty food - an extremely rich source of Vitamin E. This nutrient is a skin-beautifying antioxidant, which gives smooth and supple skin that is present in human epidermal tissue. There’s also research that Vitamin E may help fight signs of aging by protecting skin against the damage caused by ultraviolet rays.

58 VIBE | ISSUE 14 - 2017 vibemaldives.com

BEETS, the powerful antioxidants in beets help fight signs of aging to keep skin firm and youthful. Their combination of minerals and vitamins (Vitamin A, potassium, and magnesium) stimulates cell production and repair, protecting skin from premature aging and wrinkles. Just add this root vegetable to your morning juice along with apple and a hint of ginger for a delicious cleansing boost.

Happy new year 2018, just remember, you are what you eat.
