It is through these connections that their wealth has been created. There are, of course, many different types of relationships that we all have which contribute in different ways to our financial wellbeing. One of the most interesting aspects of wealth creation is that it is virtually impossible to do on your own. Put a person on a desert island and he or she will not create any additional wealth than is already present on the island. Give that person the best technology available to communicate with others and suddenly there is an almost unlimited ability to create wealth.

The better your relationship with your partner and immediate family members, the happier you will be and the more likely you will be to succeed financially. Separation, divorce and arguments about money on the other hand, lead to financial loss. Good relationships in the workplace lead to increased opportunities for career development and pay rises.

There is a direct correlation between your wealth and the nature and extent of your relationships with others. Think of any super wealthy person – Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg for example – and think about how many people in the world they interact with either directly or indirectly.

Developing networks with people in the wider community can lead to both career and business opportunities. Professional relationships with experts such as accountants, lawyers and financial advisers will help you make the right financial decisions in life.

So many people live their lives with a narrow circle of friends, barely interacting with the rest of the world, and wonder why there is little change in their financial position. These days, with the advent of social media networks there is little excuse not to be well connected. You can achieve financial success by investing time and effort in developing your relationships.

No matter how soiled your laundry gets after a day out, or whether your child has made a mess of their clothes while eating – thanks to the stain removing option, everything always comes out perfectly clean. Have more fun time with your kids, while your Bosch washing machine takes care of the mess! AllergyPlus reduces allergy causing residues Bosch not only cleans thoroughly and efficiently, but it is sensitive to you too. With AllergyPlus clothes will feel more gentle and comfortable on your skin.

Self-cleaning detergent drawer helps keep your washing machine clean by itself. After a long day of chores at home, the thought of more cleaning can be daunting. But with the self-cleaning detergent drawer, you can now be assured that your machine will be kept clean after any wash. The drawer features smooth walls and nozzles that automatically flush the two detergent chambers clean as water is added. This makes sure that the water is always clean for the follow-up rinse cycles, assisting you more than ever before.

Reduce noise pollution with a quieter Bosch washing machine With the new ‘AntiVibration’ feature, the washing machine’s noise vibrations are reduced greatly and provides increased stability – offering whisper quiet washing so you can turn the machine on, even when your children are asleep. The machines come fitted with a revolutionary motor which uses the advanced EcoSilence Drive technology, and is quieter, faster, more energy efficient, durable and powerful.

Save for you, your family and the environment Bosch washing machines don’t compromise, especially not when it comes to environmental protection. They are rated A+++, which is the highest rating as per the EU Energy Label.

Buy authentic Bosch items at Le Cute Lifestyle Electronics. Warranty and Service Centre services are available.

Through the ‘ActiveWater’ sensor technology, the washing machine is able to adjust water consumption to the relevant load size – therefore a 1kg load would be washed as efficiently as an 8kg load. This not only makes your house a green one and reduces energy consumption, but it also lowers your electricity bill. Bosch’s support of green technology and efficient use of resources is also seen in the ‘ecoPerfect’ feature, which saves energy by up to 50% by lengthening the cycle. Through this easy-to-use technology, you would be able to contribute to the environment and meet your energy bills with ease. So the next time you think you are spoilt for choice while selecting ‘the best possible laundry care’, think again. Bosch washing machines make the perfect choice for all your family’s needs.

what should i pair? every womans quick guide to colors

written by : Angel Shuja

The Bold and Bright! Who doesn’t love bright colors! It lifts up the mood and makes you feel energetic. It can portray the identity that you want to initiate and it can communicate your personality as you present yourself. Vivid colors like yellows, reds and oranges are best paired with neutrals (black, white, grey, cream or brown) it not only helps to make the color stand out but it would also make you look chic and elegant. Give the neutral look a fun perky twist by pairing bright accessories like a pair of red pumps or an electric blue bag. Today, Black is the go-to color for most women, when it comes to parties, wedding receptions or even a date night. Refresh your wardrobe by adding vibrant colors. If you want to stand out in a bright combination then try pink and red or purple and blue. Bright colors are most suitable to fun and eventful occasions, so keep colors minimal for work attire.

38 VIBE |july 2014 www.vibetrends.com

Working Woman Life tends to be a mundane and monotonous routine for working women, especially when you have to wear the same conservative neutral shades to work every day. We crave to live as the individuals we are and in fact, your personality and style can be merged into your work attire harmoniously. Clothes can make a difference, so incorporate colors into your wardrobe to add a fun personal touch; mint, citrus and pastel shades are popular today, opt for a mint top paired with neutral pants or a skirt. Mix prints with solid neutrals or bright pants with neutral tops for an exciting yet professional look. Accessorizing with jewelry, shoes or your handbag with bright colors is another fail-proof way to style your work attire with colors.

A wardrobe overflowing with clothes and accessories yet the imminent question “What should I wear?” is commonly asked when standing in front of the mirror with a rising bundle of tossed clothes at the back. Perhaps the problem originates from within the question, instead. “What Should I pair?” is the pivotal question when it comes to style. You can wear multiple styles and color combinations even with what you already own. Pairing the right colors is a matter of following a few simple rules or guidelines. And voila! You will look like a confident fashion expert when you walk out of the door.

Second Skin Where are your pants! Wearing leggings in the exact tone as your skin can put you in an embarrassing situation. We know that you love wearing leggings but avoid the common mistake of wearing it in the exact tone as your skin. Instead, look elegant and modern in a pair of slim pants or leggings that is a tone either three to two shades lighter or darker than your skin color. It slips our conscious thought that most of the time we buy a top or dress simply because it looks pretty. Pause for a minute to think if it would look good on you, or if it flatters your skin. Most Maldivian women have a medium skin tone, for which metallics, dove grey, pastel yellow, peach and blue will work gracefully. And if you have a darker skin then bright colors do stand out, but wear them wisely. Reds and blues work well as accents to an outfit. For more formal occasions you can also wear black and grey tones.

Rule of 3 The ‘three color rule’ is popular with women around the globe. Quite simply, there should not be more than three colors in your outfit. This rule is especially applicable for women who wear the burkha. Avoid wearing too many prints and colors. Try to have one neutral shade (since it compliments most colors) in your ensemble. If you are wearing a printed top then your burkha must be in a color taken from the prints and keep your pants or skirt in a solid color. Accessories and jewelry can be used to balance color as well. For example, a statement silver necklace can be balanced with a pair of silver pumps to give an edgy cool look.

These simple routines will leave you feeling and looking your best. Good morning, sunshine. Move Joyfully The trick to morning exercise? Find something you truly love to do. Make a playlist of music that makes you want to move, then get to it. It’s great to start the day already haven checked off something important from your long, long list.

Drink Up Your body loses water as you sleep at night. So in the morning, drinking plenty of fluids is extra essential. The tasty, natural drink supports hydration with five electrolytes: magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, calcium, and as much potassium as a banana. Plus it’s delicious and refreshing, and we love healthy things that taste like treats.

Face the Day Nourished You know what they say! It may be tempting to skip the morning meal, but fueling your body with high quality nutrients sets you up for success all day. Choose protein and complex carbs, so you won’t crash and burn from an early-bird sugar high. We love Greek yogurt with fresh berries and sunflower seeds; or steel-cut oats with walnuts and a drizzle of honey. Prepare the night before, so breakfast is a no-brainer when you’re still half awake.

Get Beautiful Looking gorgeous on the outside is guaranteed to make you feel good on the inside. Time is precious… from showering to choosing the day’s outfit, the more you

have done when you go to bed, the less you have to worry about in the morning. Don’t forget a good tinted moisturized/ BB Cream/foundation with SPF to even out and protect your skin. Another tip: a few squeezes of a trusty eyelash curler go a long way.

Get Connected You take time to care for your body; give your mind and spirit some love, too. Even a five minute meditation (easy as pie: sit, breathe, repeat) can pay huge dividends in calm and focus. Open your journal and make a list of ten things you’re grateful for. Ponder an inspiring daily reader. Take some quiet time to reflect and set your intention for the day. You’ll go out into the crazy world feeling sane and centered.

Essence of

Eid written by : Maryam

The celebration of Eid- Ul- Fitr culminates a month of fasting where in the faithful have spent their time praying and beseeching Almighty Allah for forgiveness and mercy. For many Ramadan was not just an abstention from food and drink. Rather it’s an exercise in patience and discipline. Eid is the celebration for those who fasted and obeyed Allah’s rules and teachings. It is for those who spent the month of Ramadan in complete devotion to Allah. Eid is a time when Muslim community comes together to share in each other’s joy and blessings and also to lessen the burden of those who may be suffering. Here at our hometown, we are blessed by Islam. Maldives we have our unique ways and traditions to how we celebrate Eid. It is preceded by people shopping

42 VIBE | july 2014 www.vibetrends.com

and looking for grocery to make the grand Eid lunch. Also for new clothes for men women and children. Buying gifts for near and dear ones. It is a time when bright lights from homes and shops illuminate our life. We use the Eid and following days to spread happiness and costal harmony by visiting different atolls, islands, friends and relatives. Highlight of the day is the special prayer of Eid. “Eid namad” is performed in most of the mosques across the country. A short prayer of “two rakaths” to acknowledge and thank almighty Allah for the blessings bestowed on us during the month of Ramadan. The day start with a beautiful prayer. Where people gather not only to pray, to shake hands and convey greetings of the day.

Gifts are exchanged during Eid by young and old alike. We also visit the elderly and the sick. Eid is a time where all kinds of festive prevails. Many of us gormandize to make up for lost food during the month of Ramadan. Every country’s traditions are unique. Maldives, especially in the scattered islands Eid is well celebrated preferably to the capital Male’ city. Traditional dances and folks are performed by men women and children. The “Koadi kedun” which the entire island community gather is an interesting and artistic concept. Some make a big artificial fish out of the coconut palms and ride it through while singing and howling.” Fen kulhi” another very unique tradition where men and women throw water on each other and run around hiding within the island. Some hilariously says this game makes and breaks marriages and new relationships develop. It’s just a belief though. The latest fashion and fun concept of stage shows continues with live music dance and dramas for three days. Here i will change the feel of my article a bit. However, with all the going around sometime we forget our lesser privileged brethren. We forget that there are many out there who have nothing to celebrate. There are those among our brother’s and sister’s for whom Eid day is just another day. There

are those who will open the cupboard on Eid day and find them bare. There are those who in hospitals who will go through a bleak and lonely day with no one visiting them. Friendless deprived of company, they will have no one to offer solace or comfort. Let us therefore see to it that our deprived brethren welcome the day of Eid with warmth and hope. There are millions of children in war torn areas of Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, the poor and downtrodden areas of Africa, Asia, South America and many more countries, who do not have the basic necessities to make is sat a different day. Let us raise our hands to pray for them. As at least in prayers we can be generous. May almighty Allah bless the people and children in all these countries.

what greater prize is there for anyone of us than to be around our beloved prophet. All we need forth at is compassion, sincerity and a feeling of brotherhood and understanding. And that will decide the quality of our life on earth and the hereafter.

Gifts are exchanged during Eid by young and old alike. We also visit the elderly and the sick. Eid is a time where all kinds of festive prevails. Many of us gormandize to make up for lost food during the month of Ramadan.

Many of us donate money to charity and full fill our religious duty on Eid day. However we actually meet the recipients of our charity the perspective of charity changes. There is a feeling of belonging when the recipient and giver meet. I believe Eid could be an opportunity for changing lives. Islamic ideology teaches us to be kind and compassionate. Holy prophet Mohamed (Peace be upon him) said that “ I and provider of the orphan will be together And

Famous now for his unmistakable voice which caught the immediate attention of the nation, singer-songwriter Shammoon [Shammu] makes a statement for every young artist out there. The recipient of ‘Best Own Melody’ in the Interschool Singing Competition for 3 consecutive years running (1st Place in 2012, 2nd in 2013 and 3rd for dual tracks in 2014) Shammu walked into the interview with a confident smile that spoke volumes about his attitude towards his chosen profession. Composing almost all lyrics for the popular band “The Five”, Shammu puts the cutthroat Maldivian music industry in a tough position. 60+ creations of his own tunes and still counting, he makes the intricacies of melodic structure seem effortless. His smooth delivery of on-thespot tracks leaves lasting effects. Singles “Ninjeh Mirey” and “Asthaa” are just few of his spontaneous creations. Reclined on the sofa and casually fumbling through his cell phone to share with me some of his tracks and new release “Paris, The City of Lovers” [Don’t miss out on it!], he easily turned me, who has never before listened to any of his songs, into a fan with his originality and laid back style. - What’s better, recordings or live performances? Performing live. It’s sincerity; interacting with an audience when performing. Take it as it is or make what you will of it but for me, whatever I sing comes straight from the heart. Amazingly enough, I still feel nervous at times [laughs] but I let the music take me into its flow and everything falls into place. - How is the scene over at Male’? Are they appreciative? Is it worth? I believe so. Commercially, I would recommend this. I can guarantee that if someone has the strength and will to go on with passion and drive, there is nothing that would hold him back from succeeding. - But the scene here is a bit different. Internationally, namely Hollywood or Bollywood you see celebrities being the centre of attention. Streets would be full of fans screaming out their names for autographs. How long do you think it’d be before Maldives would at least get to a point where musicians are loved for the work they do?

Firstly, we are separated by land. That creates somewhat of a gap. But because of the number of feedback I get, especially from the South [Addu] it wouldn’t be wrong to say that there is a huge support for musicians. It’s just, perhaps, hard to portray into quantity or crowds, given how scattered our islands are. Another problem, is the lack of support from local media. They’re not doing a good job of bringing local and original creations to the nation, as far as musicians are concerned. Otherwise, I believe that by now we would see a lot more of original and local melodies and creations being produced by artists, rather than just covers that are recorded every day. - What is the best comment you’ve received so far? Do you get pampered with lots of goodies from your fans? I don’t consider myself a famous guy. I am very simple, down-to-earth. But yes, I have experienced times where I receive gifts from fans. As for comments, every single feedback I receive stays with me. I value it so there is no specific one which I can point out as the highlight. - So you’re married now? Yes! Very recently too. I feel like I’m in a dream. It’s just so different from being single.I feel so content. It’s absolute bliss. My wife is very appreciative of my music and she’s a huge inspiration for me. My 2nd English track “Wanna Get Married Soon” was actually 6. Are there other English melodies apart from this which you’ve worked on? Around 5. The first track being, “Paris, The City of Lovers” which is to be released very soon. - How does a normal day go for you? A normal day for me is more of a rollercoaster. It’s either travelling on gigs; very hectic.Sometimes I get comments from fans when I do not respond to their messages, but I’d like to say to please be understanding as I try my best to respond. On my days off, I try to spend as much time I can with my wife. - How do you manage?

timeframes. Occasionally, I am forced to reschedule but that’s how I normally get through. - Do you plan on touring? Even if I do, it will not be solo. I’d definitely tour with the band. Personally though, I’ve been to Australia, Switzerland, Germany and Sri Lanka to perform. - You’ve come very far; who are the people you’re most thankful for? Wow, there’s so many. But definitely the biggest support is from my band; Amyn, Shinaa and Hussain who stood by me through everything. My family members, my wife and her family. My fans and my friends plus my music friends [laughs]. Shiuz, who has been very helpful and valued my work which is such a big deal for me. Also, want to give shout-outs to Fairooz and Vitte who are a huge support. I’m just very thankful for everybody who believed in me. - Any last words? This is an industry which you have to struggle so much. It’s actually very sad that musicians are undervalued here. I hope to see a day when that changes. People don’t realize at times that the entire team working in a band are people who do huge tasks in bringing about the final result, but usually only the vocalist stands out; not the rest. Honestly speaking, I would not be here today without my band backing me. I have come this far with their guidance and zest. - Before wrapping up, for all the fans holding their breath for a new release, may we get a hint of what you’re currently working on? It has been a dream of mine. We are to finally release an album by “The Five” and Insha Allah, you’ll get to hear it very soon. For updates on Shammu’s works don’t forget to visit https://soundcloud.com/shamsu. You can also find him on twitter.com/ shamsu_moon to leave a comment or stay in touch for upcoming releases.

Well, there’s my wife whom I love with all my heart. Then there’s the band, which I love just as much. Then there’s me, doing what I love [laughs] so basically I set

RELATIONSHIP

Love at work. written by : Riala

“I am so busy. I hardly get time to breath” is how we always start the conversation with a friend. “I have a meeting. I’ll be late” is the way we wish goodbye to those at home just before we leave to work. I wonder what changed in the system that makes us so committed to work, and spend all the time we get inside the four walls of an office building. Have we really become more productive and efficient along the way? I wonder… Or could there be another reason? In the haste of time, we become so engaged with worldly things we forget about what is really healthy for us. We mix up the system we are to follow to maintain a good relationship with those closer to you in your family and balance the hectic work schedule with leisure time. I am not judging and blaming entirely on the people. But maybe there was a reason why we opted to choose the busy life and focus to earn

more and voluntarily be a candidate in the rat race to climb to the top of the corporate ladder. And while at it, we find strength and encouragement from fellow colleagues who slowly substitute the family and close friends. For they understand more what you go through and they know all your challenges and every opportunity in the environment more than those at home. Slowly you get closer to the family you find at work than your own family. When you spend most of your time with your colleagues you get to know them on an intimate, day-to-day level. You will learn about their personalities and ethics they believe in. You get a feel for their intelligence and behavior. This can create chemistry and draw you closer to feel something more than mere respect or caring the Human Resources Unit of the workplace expects. It could lead to something more.

Office romances bud at this point. A study done and published in the Careebuilder. com on office romances showed that 40% of workers have dated a co-worker. In which 18% of workers have dated a co-worker at least twice. 33% of female workers dated co-workers of higher rank while 20% of male workers have dated co-workers of higher rank than them. 65% of workers dating co-workers are not hiding their relationships and 30% of workers have married co-workers. This was a study done in the Western part of the world. Many can claim that their culture and lifestyle are different from us. But really, does these statistics shock us?! No. We are all too familiar with office romances in Maldives. It has been the talk of the town for the past few decades. All we discuss at work is not just about the scholarship opening or who is going to be

worth the risk? killed next on Games of Thrones. Neither do we place all bets on which team is going to win the World Cup this year. We discuss who dates who and how someone has a crush on the new girl at work. We place bets on whether the most talked about couple is going to survive to the line of marriage, or who is the person having an affair is going to give up – his wife or his “true love” as he claims.

The Good The workplace is the safest and most convenient place to meet people and get to know them. It is the place you spend most of your time in and having mutual friends will provide you all the sources to get to know the person more. Some of the best relationships have started as relationships within the same office.

When you spend most of your time with your colleagues you get to know them on an intimate, day-to-day level. You will learn about their personalities and ethics they believe in. You get a feel for their intelligence and behavior. This can create chemistry and draw you closer to feel something more

RELATIONSHIP

President Obama met his wife Michele at a Chicago firm when Michele was assigned to supervise Barak Obama, a summer associate from Harvard Law School. Business Tycoon Bill Gates met his wife Melinda at a Microsoft press event in Manhattan. I don’t have to look further, my parents were colleagues too. They worked in the same department when they started dating and my Mother was my Father’s subordinate. We see in the medical profession and law enforcement it is usually common to have your spouse working in the same field as you or at the same organization. There is a reason behind this. All these professions are demanding and the pressure put on them are unique to their professions. When you have a partner who understands how your job can be a great impact to your time and availability, the stronger the relationship becomes.

The Bad Not all office romances end up in a happy marriage. If it leads to a bad breakup, you don’t want the drama to unfold in the midst of your workplace and have it affect your career as well. To see your ex dating others and making the mutual co-workers to be in that awkward position to “choose” between the two of you are things that you will have to face if you have to end the relationship on a bad note. It could also lead to reduced morale and motivation at work, poor performance and increased absenteeism. Dating your boss or someone superior to you can cause others to be judgmental to you on different levels. You will have to check on ethical and moral standards and be careful that there is no act of favoritisms that lead to unfairness. Some of the organizations, due to these reasons have very strict rules and procedures on inter-office dating. But how much can the management supervise or control the attraction one finds in the person who sits right in front of you every day? This will lead to an outbreak of secret romances since it is “forbidden” and if caught, will lead to serious management issues.

50 VIBE |july 2014 www.vibetrends.com

The Ugly What if you are already married? Most of the time you don’t anticipate how dirty it is going to end up when you start something just for the fun of it, or more appropriate to this situation, for the kick of it. In a book called “Not Just Friends” Dr. Shirly Glass states that “82% of 210 unfaithful partners I’ve treated have had an affair with someone who was, at first, ‘just a friend’”. This happens because according to Dr. Glass the workplace has become the “new danger zone of romantic attraction and opportunity”. To prove this, she discovered from her practice that from 1991 to 2000, 50% of unfaithful women and about 62% of unfaithful men she treated were involved with someone from work. Hence, office romances are becoming the number one reason for the cause of divorce

or the start of the rumble that collapse a marriage. In the haste that we live in, we like to find quick fixes to everything including our marriages. When we feel we are not happy in our marriage, we don’t stop to think twice to see what really is causing the drift, but rather share it with the most trusted person at work and discuss it with them. For those who are already looking for happiness outside the marriage, they take the opportunity to ‘talk things over and seek counsel’ of the potential ‘victim’. Voila! The next thing you know this couple becomes the newest hot topic of office gossip. It is also noteworthy to remember how sometimes these relationships are fueled by co-workers who probably are usually bored with routine work. It brings a new form of excitement at workplace. They think it is manly of a person to dare to approach the new girl everyone has their eyes set on. It becomes a challenge to try and win her over. The colleagues encourage this

office romances are becoming the number one reason for the cause of divorce or the start of the rumble that collapse a marriage. and this creates a déjà vu of the very fresh school days when you had to win the heart of your sweetheart. In Maldives we do not have very strict policies in every office regarding relationships at work. So if you are attracted to a colleague and want to pursue the relationship to see where it ends up, check with the policies and weigh the pros and cons. You never know you might end up finding the love of your life or losing your career which you would regret later.

to look forward to Robotics While Bill Gates might be a few years off from his prediction -- domestic robots being commonplace by 2025 -- robotic companions will be very much a part of our future. From getting your kids dressed and making breakfast to cleaning the home and reminding you about your wedding anniversary, “humanoid” robots will be the next big thing in technology.

Oculus Rift We’ve seen the future, and it’s virtual reality. Don this VR headset, and you’re fully immersed in a 360-degree world, be it a video game, virtual vacation or perhaps sitting across a coffee-sipping friend in another country. One of the few “social” applications that might be more likely now that Facebook bought Rift maker, Oculus VR, for a cool $2 billion.

Need a Stress- Free Home..?

Transform your home into a healing, relaxing zone with these little home makeover ideas Here’s a good reason to do some low-cost redecorating: The choices you make can result in enhanced mood, less stress, and better sleep. To turn your space into a healing haven, follow these easy decorating tips for a stress-free home

1.

Create a feel-good focal point. The first thing you see when you enter your home should be something you love, whether that’s a piece of art, a vase of flowers, or a special souvenir. A beautiful first impression helps you relax from the get-go.”

2.

Create space. “Our anxiety builds in small spaces if there’s too much stuff. To reduce the clutter and make the room feel larger, ask yourself if you really need all those end tables or picture frames, and cut anything deemed nonessential.

66 VIBE |july 2014 www.vibetrends.com

Consider painting a table or bookshelf the same color (or a similar one) as the wall it’s up against, so it “disappears” into it. Painting walls white or a light color will also make a smaller room feel more spacious.

3.

Light up locations, not whole rooms. “Bright overhead light can make it difficult to wind down at the end of the day. Use spot lighting for areas where you need brightness, such as next to the sofa where you read, and put overhead lights on dimmers. Also, switch to full-spectrum bulbs, which mimic natural light better than standard ones do.

4.

Create pedestrian-friendly paths. “If you can barely get into a chair without banging your leg on the coffee table, or if the path from the sofa to the door is cramped, rearrange your furniture,” says Roberts. “Not being able to safely and easily move about produces anxiety—not to mention an easy way to trip or stub a toe.”

5.

Simplify your color scheme. Use restraint with patterns and loud colors. If you mix patterns, keep their color schemes similar, and if you like lots of colors, keep patterns to a minimum. “If you have too many bright colors or high-contrast patterns in a room, your eyes are going to be drawn all over the place, making it difficult to relax. Simple designs and colors, on the other hand, are soothing.

6.

Switch off electronics. To rest easier, remove all televisions and computers from your bedroom. The light emitted by these devices signals the brain to stay awake, interfering with a good night’s sleep and leaving you with elevated levels of stress hormones in the morning.

PLEASE LIKE ME Growing up, two phrases were used to describe your affection: You “liked” a person, or you “liked-liked” a person. The first phrase meant you were friends with the person; the latter suggested you wanted something more. Nowadays, the term “like” has taken on a completely superficial connotation, one that defines our thirst for social media acceptance. Having friends on Facebook just isn’t enough anymore. Now, it’s all about how often your friends “like” whatever it is that you post.

The thumbs up symbol, which was once associated with Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel’s film rating system, is now innately associated with Mark Zuckerberg and whether or not our peers support our postings on Facebook. Between the number of thumbs on Facebook and hearts on Instagram, we have become virtually obsessed with garnering the public approval of everyone on the web. We are so consumed by the number of likes we rack up on any given post, we often go as far as to skip the wait and outright ask people to like our posts. Are you kidding me!? This is true; I have had people occasionally text me, or ask me in person, to like something they posted. On some level, we are all guilty of this obsession. We’ve all posted a status or photo and legitimately checked our phone every 30 seconds to keep track of any additional likes. It’s as if we achieve some natural, social media high from witnessing the

68 VIBE |july 2014 www.vibetrends.com

number of likes increase. We actually feel mildly depressed when a post doesn’t meet our minimum requirement for likes. Facebook enables us to like everything from statuses, to photos, to pages, to comments… What’s next? When will we be able to like people on Facebook? Imagine getting a text from one of your friends that says, “Dude, you don’t like me on Facebook? Man!” I don’t even like you in real life… What did you expect? Liking something on the web is also about the politics. At the end of the day, just because your posts get the most likes doesn’t mean you’re the most liked person. Half of the thumbs I chuck up have some sort of motivation supporting them. Sometimes I wonder if there’s such a thing as a “malicious like.” If I’m only liking a post because I feel guilty, or because I want you to like a post of mine at a later time, does it really count as a genuine like? If someone likes a status and no one sees it, did he or she really like it? As a generation taught that we are all “winners” and everyone gets a trophy, we have become even more obsessed with glorifi-

cation than generations before us were. We almost feel that we are entitled to receiving likes on our posts. Of course everyone cares about what we have to say (?). What do you mean you don’t care to see my C&K shoes or read my opinions on Politics? Isn’t everyone completely enamored by everything I do?? What we need to start focusing on is living life for ourselves, not for the likes. Don’t be a slave to social media rankings. We can’t go through life making decisions based on how many people will like our posts on social media outlets. Obviously, when we post something, we want it to be well-received by others, but let’s not be so obsessed with the need for positive feedback. If you find yourself turning into one of those people who only cares about who’s liking your posts, there’s a good chance that at the end of the day, no one is going to like you. What’s more important?
