perspective

By: Maryam M Nothing, to my way of thinking, is a better proof of a well ordered mind than a man’s ability to stop just where he is and pass some time in his own company. It is the era of phones, latest phones indispensable in our lives. The urge to be connected. Not just one but various forms of connections. To be on same page in social media. A normal text to a call. From Viber, Whatsapp, Instagram to Facebook and many more. It’s not that we live in an age of distractions, but rather an age where we are failing to teach and embrace mindful motives. To me, a child in a restaurant playing a game on her iPad is no different than an adult flicking through Instagram when friends are around. Both scenarios are moments of connection to the people around you, not through your screen, communication, and enjoyment. To be present as well as learning to be alone is a habit. Some people are really good at it because they make time to do it—in fact, they need it, or else they would go mad. Throughout your day find a moment, however fleeting, to just sit and be still. Doesn’t matter where you are. Take a few deep breathes, put your phone on silent so there’s no chance of interruption, and just reflect on the series of events that took place throughout your day. When you’re working, be ruthlessly present. Let your mind focus on the task at hand, what you’re trying to accomplish, and do it with diligence, patience, attentiveness, and care. Sooner or later, you’ll realize how much of an asset this is to your creativity and overall quality of life.

When you’re working, be ruthlessly present It provides a sense of urgency, to realize that you’ve lived a certain number of hours and the hours ahead of you are not guaranteed as the ones you have lived. When I think of this I realize that everyday truly is an opportunity to improve, not in a cliché kind of way, but to learn to honestly appreciate what we

are capable of achieving and how we are very responsible for the quality of our lives. This makes our self-respect, work ethic, generosity, self-awareness, attention, and growth ever more important. The last thing any of us wants to do is live with regret, hence why following principles of Stoicism puts your life into perspective. It humbles you and should also deeply motivate you. We should hunt out the helpful pieces of teaching and the spirited and noble-minded sayings which are capable of immediate practical application–not far far-fetched or archaic expressions or extravagant metaphors and figures of speech–and learn them so well that words become works.

The way we lead our lives and do our work must embed In an era where the anticipation of highlighting an event on Facebook or Instagram is considered more satisfying, it is difficult to even mention to keep away your phone yet.

To be present as well as learning to be alone is a habit. Some people are really good at it because they make time to do it—in fact, they need it, or else they would go mad.

Keep your phone away or get out of social media you tend to get some quality time with yourself, a calm dinner with your family, a cool chat with your friends or a true listener to your parents and child. Which can make a huge difference. Try for once and feel the experience.

INTRUDER They are on a mission. They possess splendid figures and tend to dress in a slightly masculine, assertive fashion, wear little jewellery—and that in a masculine cut. They have some sort of independent job or even career. These are the double agents of James Bond movies. Physical powers and sexual magnetism in the role came to be closely identified with the characters. I was inspired by James Bond movies mostly the characters. This collection was a street wear for younger customers. The colours were bold as black and red portrays the powerfulness of the characters, the secrecy of the agents. I have looked into the suits which in an anarchy way twisted into another level. The details are taken from suit collars and bow ties To remove bulk from the garments I have tried to create patterns with lesser seams. But there were also times where the positioning of seams, and their seam allowance values, had been used to reinforce the shapes and silhouettes that I wanted to create. Thus with these shapes I have created a more feminine silhouette without losing the masculine look. Designer: Saadha Ali Title of the collection: Intruder

Saadha Ali DESIGNING FOR FLAWLESSNESS IN ALL ASPECTS Interviewed By Ihusana Thoufeeg

VIBE is honored to present the very talented and one of the most leading fashion designers here in the Maldives, Saadha Ali. Like many other female fashion designers in Maldives, marriage and motherhood inclined her to stay at home and it enforced her to pick something up as a hobby, which was sewing. With a premier so common, what made her attain all that she has accomplished till now? How did she reach to this level? It is very simple; she is an opportunist, a risk-taker and she has the drive to move forward. At age 32, she took the first step to change her hobby into something more professional. She answered to an advertisement by the Youth Ministry in need of sewing instructors. Although she did not know enough about it, she took the risk and went forward nonetheless. Over the course of 10 years, she taught students and prepared instructors, while taking courses in Garment Manufacturing Technology and Creative Fabric Design in Sri Lanka, and an Advanced Dress Making Course and Diploma in Machine Embroidery here in Maldives. In addition, she also participated in the Conference on Youth Development & Self-help Promotion; Experience of SAARC countries 2003 in Bangladesh and in the International Women Entrepreneurs Meet and Conference 2001 in New Delhi, India. These 10 very eventful and hectic years inspired her to become a Fashion Designer.

28 VIBE | issue 8 - 2015 vibetrends.com

With this new resolution, she first went to Sri Lanka to complete her Diploma in Fashion Design, where she won the outstanding award for the best garment construction at the JD annual design award 2003. After graduating, she then flew to the United Kingdom to start her Degree in Fashion Design. During her stay in the UK, she participated in a few competitions such as Elle/ Levis competition, Clothes Show/ women’s wear Competition, Bridal Buyer Awards and River Island Bag Print Design Competition.

When asked about the most memorable day in her career, she explained cheerfully about the day she was the runner-up in the River Island Competition 2008, UK. The fact that she got 2nd place going up against thousands of younger students made her ecstatic. She was in awe when strangers approached her to congratulate and compliment her. She further informed VIBE that, while undertaking her degree, she has created her own significant look that makes her designs unique. Her significant look has 3 main features; she brings out the surface texture to make it more creative, rough and have a 3D effect, tries to include 6 colors in all her collections and by using hues and concentration she makes sure that the color combinations are right, and lastly, she uses cutting line; a single line, whether sym-

metrical, horizontal or diagonal which makes the whole look of the clothing change. After completing her degree in 2009, she travelled back to Maldives to properly answer her calling. When she came back she was specialized in men’s-wear, women’s-wear, bridal wear, beach wear and accessories. She was confident with machine embroidery, hand embroidery, pattern cutting, garment manufacturing, printing, technique and process. With these skills and knowledge, she then initiated her own business; a Design house and women’s wear production, a Mass production line (factory) and a fabric retail shop. “Fashion is all day life. Whether it is the car you drive, the music you listen to or the food you eat; everything is fashion. And it certainly is NOT limited to a small boundary, it is huge and vast.” Moving forward, she started taking part in significant events and projects, that are and can be recognized. In 2010, she produced the uniforms for the opening ceremony of the Maldives Islamic Bank. She had also participated in the Bridal Fair 2010, where she had received colorful compliments that are evident in a Minivan News article written on the 30th September 2010; “Bridal Fair Showcases Local Talent”. The following year (2011), she designed and produced the uniforms for employees at the Addu International Airport VVIP lounge and the first batch of uniform for the entire flight crew at Villa Air (FlyMe).

The year after (2012), she designed and produced the swim wear for the Thaajuddeen School Swim Team, the nurse uniforms for Medica Hospital and the uniforms for the entire work force at DAMAS Company. Within 2013, she designed and produced Madharusathul Ahmadhiyya’s Grade 11 and 12 uniforms and she actively participated in the exposure visit through the South Asian Women’s Entrepreneurship Symposium (SAWES) held in Colombo. In the year 2014, she designed and produced uniforms for Herethere Resort, high fashion costumes for an International photography workshop held in the National Art Gallery, supplied skilled tailors and machinery including all materials to JA Manafaru resort for in house work for 4 months and she did consultancy work for SABAH Maldives by giving technical advice on mass production for SABAH to implement as part of women empowerment project and designed a local beachwear collection for them.

For all of Maldives she advises, “Instead of copying each other try to find your individual look and whatever you wear, you, yourself should like it. In this very year; 2015, she designed Thaajuddeen School’s new official student’s uniform with detailed drawings and she was involved in a project with Bank of Maldives on the new staff uniform. The project comprised of design alteration, fabric sourcing, and production of mock uniforms including embroidery. When overburdened with the high-end demands of the fashion industry as apparent from the above, she unwinds by travelling, reading, watching reality shows, listening to acoustic music, going out for walks, swimming and aqua-aerobics. Saadha was discreet but offered just the right amount when asked about her future. “I want to create a collection and launch a brand here in Maldives. And I expect the brand to be well-liked and popular. Unfortunately the time is still not right.” At the end of the day she owes her

30 VIBE | issue 8 - 2015 vibetrends.com

thanks to her husband and son for being so understanding even at difficult times, and her family for being so supportive and caring. As a leading fashion designer in Maldives, she offered authentic advice to all younger fashion designers,” As Maldivians, we cannot design and we cannot introduce whatever we want to. We have to follow our ethics and our religion. Think about this before you design.” For all of Maldives she advises, “Instead of copying each other try to find your individual look and whatever you wear, you, yourself should like it. Furthermore, Maldives need more colors. So open your wardrobe, step back and take a look at your clothes. Think about the colors that are missing and try to fill it in!” For information about Saadha’s current work, visit: Facebook page: Riveli or Saadha Ali Instagram: riveli.by.saadha

RELATIONSHIP

more than friends? By Riala

Gone are the days when people in relationships had defined statuses. The accepted norm is to court the potential love interest and they will be the talk of the town in the society. Some will encourage them to become a couple while others challenge them. Thus begins the dating period, in which they’d be called a couple officially. The society will then follow the story wanting to know how the story will end, whether it will lead to a marriage or a heartbreak. If the couple for many reasons didn’t work out, they choose to go different paths and it’s never a secret. The new buzz among the society would be of the split and there will be a new game. People would start taking sides and blaming the other party. Well, we can’t help it, that’s how our society has been, since the beginning. Anyway, back to the couple. If the couple lasts till marriage, they become engaged and announce it to the society and get married and the society celebrates with them. End of story. It’s always been something similar to what I just wrote. So, we know where

we are in a relationship. It’s either; single, married, divorced or widowed. That simple! Then came ‘complicated’ and ‘in a relationship’. Yeah we are all in a relationship with everyone. Be it mother, sister, husband or a friend. The name you give to the relationship is what defines it. When you just say you are in a relationship with someone, that someone will be wondering exactly in what sort of relationship you are with them. What if that someone and you are not on the same page? Gone are the days when we followed a set of rules and a clear path to marriage. From the ‘Hithaanee’ and Eid celebrations to school fairs and carnivals where we start courting, to a grand celebration of marriage.

What changed? The environment has changed. Our needs and lifestyle has changed. With that, a lot of priorities have changed. We no longer seek a partner to wed and settle right after we leave school.

Marriage is not among the top on the priority list anymore. There are more important things that we need to do before we settle, like getting a job, meeting a set standard of education qualification or achieving a goal as to learn a new skill or develop yourself to become ‘somebody’ in the society who is looked up to. While you are on your path to pursue these set goals, you meet people and make friends. Naturally you develop feelings and get emotionally attached. You will only be friends with people you like, don’t you? Among those friends you will only draw closer to a few who you have some similarities and ‘click’, right? Right. When two people have so much in common, then a simple friendship could turn into something a lot more complex over time. Then it’s only very natural that you develop feelings and eventually fall for them. And this is where you get lost! This is exactly when people start to notice the looks you both exchange and the way you behave when the other is present and ask you what’s cooking

and you reply that you are “just friends” and wonder where exactly you stand in the relationship.

So are you more than friends? If you are close friends who care for each other and enjoy each other’s company, and there’s that perfect portion of secret attraction that bubbles every time you think of each other or look at them, then you’re perfect for each other and doomed to inevitably fall in love with each other. After all, who can fight the law of love? If you are not sure whether you have crossed the line, read below to check a few of the indicators which will help you determine that you are indeed more than ‘just friends’.

1. late night calls and texts It may start off as an occasional call or a text to keep in touch or just to check on them. But if these occasional calls or texts get more frequent and the calls last longer and especially stretches late into the night and send texts just before going to bed, then be assured it’s not friends checking on each other. Soon you can’t imagine going to bed without saying see-you-in-my-dream or dream-about-me.

2. Being there all the time Do you ask your friend to call and let you know once they’ve reached home safely? Do you call your friend whenever you fear that you have a problem, and do they always ‘save’ you from the situation? Good friends help each other now and then or when asked, but friends who are more than friends try to be there for each other all the time.

3. Being Jealous Is your friend very attractive? Of course, they are. At least to you, they are. Chances are that they are already dating or there will be other potential ‘friends’ who’d like to go on dates with your friend. As much as you are friends and care for their interest, you would get irritated and jealous. Especially if your friend likes the date and talks about it excitedly, you’ll feel annoyed and anger and that’s a clear sign that

you are more than friends.

4. Spending weekends and holidays together Holidays and weekends are supposed to be the time to relax and enjoy. You only invite and welcome those who make you happy and with whom you can have a fun time. So if you happen to invite your friend along or find yourself making plans together, it’s just because both of you love spending time with each other. Now if that’s not happy budding romance, what is?

5. Go on dates with each other Now, of course, you don’t call these ‘dates’ when you’re just friends. You claim it’s just checking the new restaurant or catching the new movie and it happens that the first one who came to your mind is your special friend. Well, two people just don’t go to movies, restaurants or exhibitions together just because there is no one else to go with. They do it because they love sharing new experiences together.

6. Extremely loyal to each other Friends trust each other, but there’s always a hint of uncertainty even among the best of friends. Unlike friendship, research suggests that when you’re in love, both try their best to be loyal to each other, and be there in each other’s time of need. If you expect this kind of loyalty from your friend and catch yourself being extremely loyal to your friend, then there’s a great chance that you’re both more than friends who are also in love.

7. Want to kiss your friend If you relate to these facts then do I need to say more? You are indeed more than friends. Then what? Do you tell your friend? Does your friend know too? What will happen to your friendship? Are you still friends? Well, keep reading Vibe to learn more…

What is a Paleo

The new, old diet - the paleo diet, (also nicknamed the caveman diet, primal diet, Stone Age diet, and hunter-gatherer diet) is hugely popular these days, and goes by one simple question:

What would a caveman eat? The Paleo diet is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the ONLY nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic.

WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT NOT TO EAT, ON A PALEO DIET EAT: • Grass-produced meats • Fish/seafood • Fresh fruits and veggies • Eggs • Nuts and seeds • Healthful oils (Olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, coconut)

42 VIBE | issue 8 - 2015 vibetrends.com

DON’T EAT: • Cereal grains • Legumes (including peanuts) • Dairy • Refined sugar • Potatoes • Processed foods • Salt • Refined vegetable oils

HOW TO MAKE THE PALEO DIET A ROUTINE PART OF YOUR LIFESTYLE • For breakfast, make an easy omelet. Onions, peppers, mushrooms, and broccoli in olive oil; free-range eggs and diced turkey or chicken breast. • Paleo lunches are easy. At the beginning of the week, make a huge salad with anything you like. A good starting point can be mixed greens, spinach, radishes, bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, avocadoes, walnuts, almonds and sliced apples or pears. Store the salad in a large sealable container. Each morning prepare a single serving from

the large batch and then mix in meat (ground beef, beef slices, chicken, turkey, etc.) or seafood of choice (salmon, shrimp, tuna, any fresh fish or seafood). Toss with olive oil and lemon juice and you are set. • For dinner, try spaghetti squash as a substitute for any pasta recipe. Top with pesto, marinara and meatballs. Roasted beets and their greens make a great side dish for meat. Asparagus, broccoli, and spinach can be steamed quickly. Salmon, or other fresh fish filets grill well with accompanying foil packs full of cut veggies with olive oil and garlic. • Berries and other succulent fruits make a great dessert. Pre-cut carrot and celery sticks, sliced fruit, and pre-portioned raw nut/dried fruit mixes are easy snacks.

Surprising Ways to Use Coffee in Your Beauty Routine

No matter how many articles we see about the importance of whittling down our daily coffee intake (i.e. many), we’re more than happy to admit that we aren’t exactly inclined to give up that morning cup. Brushing off the haters comes easily to us, especially when you consider the slew of undercover beauty uses that coffee has been hiding all this time on top of being our favorite morning wake-up call. Here, we’ve rounded up eight ways to incorporate coffee into your beauty routine that even a tea drinker could love.

01

Eliminate Puffy Eyes In a world packed with stressful work deadlines and family obligations, the vast majority of us are not getting enough sleep, which is the best way to go about acquiring puffy eyes and dark circles. Game changer: coffee can help you get a morning pick-meup for your eyes, not just your brain. Save the grounds from your morning pot of coffee and setting them aside to cool before applying to the under eye area and eyelids. Hang out or soak in a relaxing bath for about twenty minutes, then rinse off the grounds with cool water.

02

Minimize Cellulite

No matter how much we work out—or even how naturally thin we are!—cellulite is something we all struggle with. A

50 VIBE | issue 8 - 2015 vibetrends.com

coffee scrub can be immensely helpful in minimizing the appearance of cellulite, as the exfoliation and massage work together to help stimulate blood flow and tighten the skin.

03

Tinting Your Hair

04

Exfoliating

Mix one or two teaspoons of ground coffee into a handful of conditioner and lets it sit on her hair for at least five minutes to enhance her chestnut brown hair color.

No surprise here: coffee grounds are the perfect consistency for a great exfoliator. In addition, coffee beans contain caffeic acid, which boosts collagen production.

05

Brightening Skin

Mix two tablespoons of plain yogurt with one tablespoon of ground coffee and apply to your freshly washed face. Leave the mixture on for 15 minutes, then rinse. The caffeine in coffee stimulates circulation, which leads to a more radiant, glowing complexion.

06

Exfoliating Your Scalp

Just as with your face and body, exfoliating your scalp is key for eliminating buildup and dead skin cells. Ground coffee makes a great scrub for this purpose, and imparts an incredible shine to hair. Apply 1/3 cup of ground coffee to your wet scalp, massage in circular motions for 60 seconds, and then rinse,

following with your usual shampoo and conditioner.

07

Increase Circulation

Three words: coffee ice cubes. Make them in advance and keep them in your fridge to rejuvenate the skin and increase blood circulation to the face for brighter, healthier skin. Just take one of the cubes and gently trace your eye area, as well as the bone structure of the face, each morning to reduce puffiness and make everything a little bit brighter.

08

Soothe Your Feet

Coconut and coffee foot scrub is best to soothe weary feet at home. The blend of antioxidant-rich coffee and moisture-locking coconut oil makes for the perfect combination of natural ingredients to remove and repair rough skin. One cup of virgin coconut oil, 1/2 cup of your ground coffee of choice. Prepare a tub of warm soapy water, then soak your feet for 10 minutes. While soaking, apply one teaspoon of the scrub to feet in a circular motion to exfoliate the dead skin. Rinse feet in warm water and pat dry—and feel free to use the scrub on the rest of your body in the shower, too.

Mooshan Playing to perfection, convey the emotion By Ihusana Thoufeeg

He doesn’t carry music in his DNA. But it has become the element that he breathes. From a young age, people, including his parents, had started to notice his talent as a singer, while he was oblivious. They had pushed him to the edge to make him pursue this profession, but he had dodged their shoves numerous times. But soon after, the time came when he himself grew interested in music. With the help of a very supportive group of friends, he learnt how to play the guitar and started to imitate the musicians that he looked up to and inspired him. Finally in 2006, his opportunity to debut comes up. “Like a women’s purse, I carried around my guitar. My friends would always ask me to play some thing. Later on a friend introduced me to a resort musician. He gave me 50 to 60 songs to learn within 3 months and he also provided a practice room. From that moment I didn’t look back. The first time on a public and live stage wasn’t perfect, but the stage fright or the cold feet did not discourage me.” VIBE: In the early stage of your career, what was the biggest challenge you faced. Mummu: It still is a challenge; space to work and practice. It’s a situation all around us. I’m not going to blame a

certain body. Rather, I would work to overcome these obstacles. VIBE: What inspires you, as a musician? Mummu: The people who support me, the positive response and the people around me. VIBE: Do you prefer to sing Dhivehi or English songs? Mummu: At resorts, there are people from all over the world, so as a resort musician I use English. On the other hand, I am composing my own Dhivehi songs and I have even played Dhivehi songs at resorts. Tourists would be curious as to what language I used and they would come up to ask me questions. I believe that there is no language barrier when it comes to music. People can understand the emotion of the song and they even tell me that it’s like I was singing an English song. So simply put, the language I prefer to sing, solely depends on my audience. VIBE: You have performed in a lot of events. What has changed compared to your first performance and your latest? Mummu: The stage fright. I’m no longer nervous and the cold feet doesn’t bother me anymore. I have gained more confidence. VIBE: You have been a musician for approximately 9 years. Is there anything you would change or would have done differently? Mummu: I wish I learnt to play the piano before I played the guitar. People do prefer the guitar, but personally the piano really touches inside me. VIBE: Tell me about the Maldivian musicians that you really look up to. Mummu: Firstly there’s Shiuz. He is a friend of mine and I don’t tell him this, but he is a great singer and I follow his footsteps. I also respect Trio. I have listened to and played both Trio’s and Shiuz’s songs. Then there is Detune. They have a great line-up, they are great at what they do and I really admire their commitment and passion. All in all, I would like to say everyone’s names because there are so many talented people around here.

VIBE: You have mentioned that you are making a video for the song “Ihsaas”. How is it coming along? Mummu: I have done the first shoot. This song is the BOMB. It’s going to be a game changer. We have labeled the style of the song as Dhivehi Dance Music. It is an electronic and an upbeat Dhivehi song. I have been wanting to try this concept. I’m not a person who is fixed to one single genre. I want to try everything except the heavy because that doesn’t suit me and my voice. I play what suits me and what I like. VIBE: What about your first album? When do you expect to publish it? Mummu: Before the end of the year. I plan t0 release the album and the video song “Ihsaas” together. It will help promote the album and I hope everyone loves it because I am working very hard on it.

We have plenty of talented musicians here in our community. Everybody is great at what they do and would like to ask them to contribute their creative works as much as they can VIBE: Anything you would like to say to your fans? Mummu: It’s their support that keeps me going. Whatever activity I have on Facebook, even a single like means a lot to me. Every day, I love seeing the activities on my feed. There’s lots and lots! I’m really thankful and humbled by their comments for the work that I have been doing. It’s really great! I wasn’t expecting much but the response to the song “Reethikan” was heart-warming.

Mummu: My parents, family, friends and all the musicians I have met and inspired me. VIBE: How can we check your latest works? Mummu: I’ve got my website; www. mooshan.com. This website is the platform where you can reach all my networks; Facebook, YouTube, Sound Cloud, Twitter and even Instagram. You can check everything and you can stay in touch with me as well. I would love to respond, talk and discuss with my fans, supporters and everybody! Whatever I can with the time I have. I think I’m doing a pretty good job so far. Mummu concludes the interview by saying: We have plenty of talented musicians here in our community. Everybody is great at what they do and would like to ask them to contribute their creative works as much as they can. Let’s see that in a time frame of 5 years we will be able to watch our own TV channel with Maldivian music on! I’m also trying to create this website where all the artists can contribute their video songs and everything that can be displayed and represented in the website. The website will go all over the world. I want to do this very soon. I would also like to add that, within this community, there is not enough singers. We do have a lot of musicians, there are a lot of people who play instruments. But we don’t have enough singers and I want to create awareness about this. I want to encourage people who are interested in singing and tell them that we musicians are also here to help. Resorts need musicians like the food that are being served every day. The already existing musicians are not enough to cater the demands. I’m not saying you can just go and play at a resort. But this is an opportunity you can use if you try hard enough. I am trying to contribute as much as I can to this industry and I hope to see our musicians do well. Not only here in Maldives, but internationally. Because together we can! www.mooshan.com
