Slow down, Take a breath. by M

At all ages, we could feel the pressure to pack our life full of activity and maximize our time by doing all we can.

natural progression of humankind is to become the most efficient life form on earth.

There is more to life than increasing its speed.” —Mohandas K. Gandhi

If there’s nothing wrong with this system, then why are so many people unhappy? Why are so many on medication to control anxiety, stress, and depression?

In school, we’re encouraged to join as many activities as possible to make the most of our educational experience. At work, it’s expected that we’ll be productive and take on more and more responsibility. Even at home, there’s a never ending to-do list of things that need maintained, fixed or upgraded. And we go on living as if there’s nothing wrong with this system. As if the

18 VIBE | issue 9 - 2016 vibetrends.com

The style of life has overloaded our minds. And we walk around with this nagging sense that there’s something we forgot to do. Or we feel guilty when we actually do take time to do nothing, be lazy with some friends, or to see the fish at the sea while we walk around.

There’s just no rest; no sense of completion, ever. And it’s eating away at us from the inside. Making it impossible to find a reason to smile, or be joyful, or just be. But life doesn’t have to be so crazy. The craziness ends when people embrace the alternative: slowing down. Slowing down is radical in this day and age. An age where we tend to burn with frustration if a website doesn’t load instantly. We think taking a nap is a sign of laziness. We check our email, Facebook, twitter more than 50 times a day. We lose sleep over an upcoming deadline.

We even take our own lives because the pressure to perform is too much to handle.

important, and do that. Even simpler, choose to do the things you are passionate about, and drop the rest.

• Only check your email twice a day.

Breaking these habits can be difficult. But why is that?

If life in the slow lane appeals to you, here are some easy steps to escape the rat race and enjoy a slower, simpler, happier life, it may work.

• Find a hobby. Try something new, you don’t have to be good at it. As long as it excites you and taps into your creativity.

Here goes some few tips it might help.

• Spend time with people you love. This is it, the one piece of advice I’d give you if I could only give you one.

We fear that something bad will happen if things don’t get done. To calm that fear we work harder, and longer, and harder, and longer only to realize that there’s more to do. It never ends. If you’re tired of the grind, let me suggest you step back and take an honest assessment of what needs to be done. Letting go of the compulsion to do all things can be an awesomely liberating high. Simply choose what’s most

• Embrace quality over quantity.

• Choose 3 things to accomplish each day. • Learn to say “no.” • Be unproductive.

INTRODUCING MARY HALYM

An Aspiring Bag Designer with Potential Written by : Ihusana Thoufeeg

This time, Vibe is excited to meet with the delightful and an up and coming Bag Designer in Maldives; Mary Halym. Just a few years ago, this talented designer was at home without any knowledge about making bags. Until her sister introduced the websites; Etsy. com and Pinterest.com. She browsed the websites until some very stunning bags caught her eyes. Inspiration hit her and which made her create her very first bag.

Page to start selling the bags. That was how she first introduced her bags to the public; the Facebook page she launched on the 27th September 2012, which goes by the name; Bags by Mary.

her loved ones and with her own hard work and capability.

After the first event she participated in; the Consumer Fair 2013, her Dhonbe helped her by getting her an actual industrial sewing machine. Afterwards, sewing was made easy.

VIBE: Why did you specifically start designing bags?

The first person she showed it to; her sister complimented the bag and motivated her to make even more. Her friends, who liked the bags, started buying them from her.

Later on she had participated in Art and Craft Bazaar 2013 and 2014 and also the Maldives Festival of Arts 2015, while making bags for both her collections; Iruvai Collection 2014 (Nature Themed) and Iruvai Collection 2015 (Urban Themed).

It was her friends and her sister that encouraged her to start up a Facebook

She has come this far with all the support and motivation she gained from

24 VIBE | issue 9 - 2016 vibetrends.com

So today, Mary sits with her husband, Afu as she answers our questions.

Mary: While I was going through the websites, it was the beautiful bags that grabbed my attention. I don’t make any sorts of clothing; just bags. I have never sewed clothes and I don’t really want to anyways. Bags are different and interesting. It’s something you can design however you want to and you can actually use. VIBE: How did you learn to make bags?

Mary: Etsy and Youtube. They had good tutorials that teaches from the very basics; step by step. At first I didn’t even know how to do something as simple as sewing on a zipper. I didn’t take part in any sort of sewing course. VIBE: What was your biggest challenge when you started making bags? Mary: When I first started, I was not able to get much material for the bag, here in Male’. I was able to get zippers and certain fabric, but it was difficult. If I wanted canvas fabric, it was only available in one or two shops. The fabric used inside the bag; lining, and the water-proof lining that I use now, it is not accessible here. I was enforced to adjust the bags I wanted to make to what is available here. So at the beginning I went to Sri Lanka to buy what I needed. But since it won’t be easy to visit Lanka whenever I needed something, I was forced to buy in bulk. VIBE: Do you get a lot of customers here in Maldives? Mary: I only sell here in Male’ and the customers are very supportive. Even though I live in Sri Lanka, customers would call me or contact me through Viber or Facebook; requesting for bags. I even have customers that regularly order for bags. VIBE: Are you currently working on anything?

She has come this far with all the support and motivation she gained from her loved ones and with her own hard work and capability. 25

fashion

Mary: Not right now. But recently I rebranded from Bags by Mary to MH; which stands for Mary Halym. I Rebranded along with my first collection; Iruvai Collection 2014. Unfortunately I couldn’t change the Facebook page name to MH because it seems that once the “likes” exceed a certain limit; you can no longer change the name of the page! I didn’t want to start a new page all over again so I just kept it. VIBE: What was your biggest achievement in your career? Mary: The rebranding. I am now able to introduce the bags as a brand. It’s no longer about a person who makes bags; rather it’s about the MH brand. I have received so much support! All the bags from the last collection were sold! I didn’t expect it and it has made me so happy. Afu: When she is making the bag she would ask me whether this would sell and she would say that she won’t participate in the event this time! I would say that everything WILL BE sold! Mary: Honestly I have received a lot of support and help from my husband. He helped me rebrand, take pictures for the page and so much more! Afu: I do what I can. VIBE: When you are designing, what are you most attentive about? Mary: After the rebranding, there is a theme for all the designs. So what I focus on is making the bags and buying the materials according to the concept, not just randomly making a bag. VIBE: What was the most happiest in your career? Mary: There are so many happy moments! Having the courage to participate in these fairs, receiving so much support and every single time I make a pretty bag is a happy moment too! Afu: That’s right! There’s always a party at home once she’s done with a bag! Mary: But the happiest moment was when I made my first bag with the MH label on it!

FASHION

VIBE: How long do you take to make a bag? Mary: Different bags take different times. It will take approximately 4 to 5 hours if I’m not busy doing anything else. If I hand print on the fabric, add more pockets or add a zipper it will take more time. Diaper Bags take around 6 hours. It depends on what type of a bag it is and its size. VIBE: So what are your future goals? Mary: I want this to be a successful brand; an international brand. I have some opportunities in Sri Lanka and I plan to explore them on 2016. VIBE: Do you have any word of advice for the potential designers? Especially those who are thinking of becoming bag designers? Mary: A few bag designers already ask me for advice; like where to get certain material or how to make certain things. Lots of people have also asked me to consider starting a course to teach them how to make bags! But I live in Lanka, how can i? There is no space to hold this and there are no proper sewing machines either. I do help when they ask and give my opinion when they ask for it, after they make their own bags. I didn’t learn from somebody. If you want to do it, you can. Don’t wait for someone to come and teach you. Use the internet and teach yourself! IF you want to do it, you can! Because I have done it too! VIBE: How can your potential customers contact you?

RELATIONSHIP GOALS. THE 05 MOST IMPORTANT ...................................................

1. Spend When it comes to romantic relationships, a handful of goals are necessary to enhance the longevity and success in love. Since each and every relationship is different, setting goals to improve a relationship may include selfimprovement (learning how to communicate better), time management (clearing the schedule for quality time), and the personal development regarding the correction of character flaws, such as impatience.

...................................................... Below you will find some of the most common relationship goals couples tend to create:

More Time Together ..................................................... With better time management skills and motivation, one can easily make time to spend with their significant other, such as having a picnic, enjoying a romantic candlelight dinner, or participating in an event that the other shares an interest in.

Clear communication helps people entering new relationships to dating students to couples married for 20 years. One of the most common mistakes that couples make is to hold in their feelings. Bottled-up emotions have the potential to swell into much larger problems that usually culminate in an argument that could have very well been avoided. It is a well-known fact that strong lines of communication help strengthen the bond between couples. Unfortunately, many people forget this simple aspect when dating, staying married, or meeting new people.

3. Stay Truthful ..................................................... When first meeting a potential romantic companion, it is quite important to keep the lines of communication fresh, open, and truthful. Don’t lie or stretch the truth to someone you have just met in order to impress them. This is not the way to start a new relationship and in the end, suppressed emotions and thoughts may surface if you should strike up more than a friendship in the future. If you clearly state what you are looking for in a relationship to a potential companion, you stand to enjoy much successful results.

Many relationships are based upon trust and when this significant piece of the puzzle is missing – relationships start to crumble. While it is hard to tell the truth 100% of the time, many couples aim to improve upon this aspect of their relationship.

5. Listen More ..................................................... Many unhappy relationships end because one or more of the involved doesn’t take the time to listen to the other, which results in miscommunication and lack of understanding. What is Hiking? Our bodies were designed for motion and need to move in order to stay fit and healthy. Walking is one of the best exercises there is for your body. It doesn’t stress your joints as much as running does, but still gets your body working hard enough for it to benefit from the exercise. Walking can be an excellent complement to running, or at least to ultra running, especially for the longer distances (e.g. 100K, 100M) and for mountain courses. In some respects, it is probably even better than pure running in developing a deep base of endurance. Hiking is walking. So it is good for you, but it is more than just walking. It’s also communing with nature. Now combine the one of the best exercises there is, walking, with some of the most spectacular beauty to be found on our planet, nature, and you have hiking, or walking in the wilderness. You can go for a walk just about anywhere. You can walk around the block or the neighbourhood. You can walk to work or to school. You can even go for a walk in the park. They are all good for you, but none of these walks really constitutes hiking. When you go for a walk in the wilderness, in a part of the world that has not been transformed by man, then your walking becomes hiking. When hiking, because your walking is in the wilderness, you have to depend and rely more on yourself – your skills and abilities. Hiking gives walking a different feel or flavour. Hiking lets you to be a part of your surrounding, gives opportunity to explore and absorb the nature and its elements. Its intended to enjoy nature, learn people and culture. Hence it broadens your perspective of the world and enriches your knowledge, your perspectives and understanding of diverse world communities. Hiking is usually undertaken on foot, as a journey to reach intended destination. A hike can be a single day or multiple days, weeks or even months. Unlike traditional holidays, a hiker is always moving from place to place and his experience, environment, people and culture vary from place to place.

Another nice thing about hiking – it’s free. You’ve probably heard the saying that the best things in life are free. I think this certainly applies to hiking. There may be some fees at trailheads for parking your car, and a few places may charge a small fee for a trail permit in areas that are heavily used. But there are still plenty of places where you can go for hike with no more cost incurred than the transportation to get there and back home again. Why outdoor? We love the outdoors because its nature and being outside means connecting with environment and its elements. It is appreciating the beauty, diversity, it about exploring, its about asking yourself, its about knowledge, its about smelling, touching and witnessing what we account in our living space. There’s a lot of different ways to live outdoor, what inspire you into hiking? We hike, trek and climb in all different settings. Hiking for hours and hours are physically and mentally demanding no matter alpine, hilly or urban areas, but it is actually the reward of hiking. We appreciate then to live with minimum, make best of what we carry for food, drinks, clothing and gear. It keeps you healthy, in shape so you feel good. Apart from physical benefits, you become much more alert and aware of yourself, if you walk like 8 hours a day for weeks, it is plenty of time to reflect on your life, meditate and concentrate. You are eventually part of nature, part of living with million living things that are visible and invisible, tangible and intangible. We have witnessed poverty, hardship, environmental problems, natural destruction and when you are physically present it gives you a different dimension. That is the essence of trekking, hiking or climbing. It is about being a better person.

What initiated Dhi Explorer? It is an idea that emerged before our Yayung Ri Climb / Nepal, last September. Because we know there are people who are into out door activities, but from what we know it is very much individual initiatives, so we thought to create a platform where we all come and explore ideas, share and create excitement to go out and discover. Anyone can be a part of Dhi Explorer by contributing to DhiExplorer.com online platforms, get your story out to public and inspire. We also hope to meet our members and contributors so we can arrange and organize exciting programs in future.

“Dhi Explorer seeks to thrive outdoor activities for Maldivians as a way of broadening leisure engagement, explore cultures, new landscapes, mountains, people and communities through trekking and climbing. It is a platform where common interests meet, share and thrive to seek new leisure dimensions”. What is demanded for someone to go on such challenging treks? We have done four specific hike last year alone, different grades of course. It does not mean that we are inactive otherwise, we are always moving. So far the Yalung Ri in Nepal (5640m) is the most significant, not because of the altitude but it was the first hike as Dhi Explorer, Zaimbe, I and Inthi together. It was very remote, wet conditions, altitude sickness and unexpected health problems, When you undertake these kind of expedition for three weeks, it tests your limits and that’s how you challenge to go further.

how safe are your hands?. proper handcare by janet

If you are a parent your hands are a source of comfort and protection. You hug your children, help them wash, dress and eat, wipe away their tears and pick them up when they fall, but your dirty hands could also make them sick! Hand washing is an important part of keeping you and your family healthy. There can be millions of bacteria on your hands at any one time and are too small to be seen. Hands collect bacteria from surfaces, things and people they touch, including your body, especially the ears, nose, mouth, spots and cuts, and from using the toilet. Dirty hands transfer bacteria and germs to other items, people, food and things you consume, all of which can cause illness. Good handwashing removes the bacteria and helps prevent germs from spreading, however a quick rinse under

the tap doesn’t get rid of any of the dangerous germs and leaving your hands damp helps germs breed and spread more easily to what you touch next To properly wash your hands you should:

• Wet hands thoroughly • Use soap • Rub hands vigorously – especially the nails, fingertips, thumbs, sides of the hands and wrists (it is the vigor in handwashing which is effective and should take at least 40 seconds to 1 minute) • Rinse hands thoroughly • Dry hands completely using a paper towel • Bin the towel (without using your clean hands to open the bin lid) Get into the habit of washing your hands properly and often, but especially after using the toilet, after changing a

nappy, removing rubbish or touching animals and always before preparing food. Remember - Good handwashing can help keep yourself, your family and everyone else, healthy

FITNESS

5 best workout tips of all time Bring on the next level

Want to know the secrets to getting a toned, trim body in record time? The tricks to kick a fitness routine into high gear. Put a few of these tips into action each week and you’re guaranteed to see faster results.

02 Work out during your workday

04 Maximize your crunches

Sit on a stability ball to strengthen your core, and keep dumbbells or exercise tubing at your desk. Squeeze in 12 to 15 reps of exercises like dumbbell curls, overhead presses and ab crunches; aim for two or three sets of each. This gives you more free time to fit in fun workouts like biking or tennis.

Don’t relax your abs as you lower your chest away from your knees during a crunch, you get only half the ab-toning benefit! To get the firmest abs possible, you need to sustain the contraction on the way down.

01 Power up Your runs 03 Take this jumprope challenge Adding wall sits to the end of every run will strengthen your quads, hamstrings and glutes, improving your speed and endurance. Lean against a wall with your feet shoulder-width apart, then squat until your knees are bent at 45 degrees. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds; work up to doing 10 sets. Add a challenge by including heel raises: Lift your left heel, then the right, then lift both together twice.

44 VIBE | issue 9 - 2016 vibetrends.com

The best cardio workout is the jumprope double-turn maneuver. It’s intense, you’ll burn about 26 calories per minute. Do a basic jump for five minutes, then jump twice as high and turn the rope twice as fast so it passes under your feet twice before you land. This takes timing, patience and power. But you’ll get in great shape just by working at it.

05 Intensify your push-up Squat-thrust push-ups get you in great shape because they work your upper body, core and lower body and improve agility, strength and endurance all at once. From a standing position, bend down, put your hands on the floor shoulder-width apart, and jump your feet back into plank position. If you’re strong, cross your ankles; otherwise, jump your feet wide apart. Do a pushup, then jump your feet together or uncross your ankles. Jump your feet back to your hands and stand up. Do eight reps total, rest for one minute, and repeat.

BEAUTY

GET READY, SET, GO. habit and I promise you, you will see worthwhile results! (I have now come to enjoy applying a weekly face mask, hair mask, whilst catching up with reading on a weekend). Your makeup will last longer, your skin will develop a natural healthy glow and you will therefore not be required to apply as much makeup in the first place, which in turn will lead to healthier, better looking skin on a long term basis. ARTICLE WRITTEN BY Stephanie Selbie founder of the-spursuit.com Personal & Online Styling | Corporate Grooming | Image Consultancy

Since having relocated to Dubai, I have learned many tips and tricks over the past few years, on how to deal with staying fresh in the extreme heat. We all want to look glowing, fresh, natural and the best version of ourselves. This can be a huge challenge when you live in a climate such like the Maldives or Dubai. Thankfully, there are products, tips and tricks that are here to save us all! To begin with, you need a great base, i.e; skincare. This is vitally important to achieving your perfect make up look. You need to be sure to cleanse, tone and moisturise every morning and every night, as well as exfoliating and using a face mask at least once a week. Try to incorporate this into your weekly beauty regime, it will become very easy to follow when you’re in the

Before you decide to invest any money in your skincare regime, you firstly need to identify what skin type you have, so you can therefore purchase products accordingly. This is vital. You will fall under one of the following categories:

Normal - You have very few imperfections, very rarely suffer from breakouts and you do not experience any particular sensitivity. Your complexion is generally radiant. (You are lucky!)

Dry - Your completion may appear quite dull at times, you may find areas that are particularly flakey or rough, lines will appear more visible.

Oily - You experience oil build up through your t-zone area, your skin can appear shiny and you may experience a build up of blackheads more frequently than someone with dry/normal skin. However, wrinkles will be less prominent with oily skin, that’s a plus!

Combination - You will find that you have dry skin in some areas, however, also a build up of oil in others, such as the t-zone area. If you have combination skin you may find it beneficial to use a combination of different products on the different areas.

I would always advise to use natural products on your skin. You certainly don’t want to use anything with harsh chemicals. Liz Earle have great options for every skin type possible, the website delivers internationally and they have special offers on monthly, when you purchase a full skincare range.

“Before you decide to invest any money in your skincare regime, you firstly need to identify what skin type you are” Boots Pharmacy’s own brand also do great products for skincare on a budget, they do not use any harsh chemicals and you pick exactly what is suited for you from their large range. Origins is another fantastic option, their products are all made from natural and certified organic ingredients and 100%

natural essential oils. Plus all products are formulated with ‘earth friendly practices’ and and they recycle cosmetic ‘empties’ from any brand, everyday.

Now onto the fun part… Makeup 101! We want to ensure whatever products you use are ‘heatproof’, i;e; will stay put all day under the duress of the Maldivian heat, but at the same time we don’t want to clog up our pores with heavy makeup. Being based somewhere like the Maldives, you want to obtain a natural looking healthy glow and bronzed look, it comes with the territory. But it’s important to achieve this in a natural and safe manner (by safe, I am referring to limited sun exposure). So always be sure to wear suncream under whatever makeup you use, I always try to buy makeup that specifically has a SPF of at least 20, where possible. To begin always use a primer. Investing in a good primer will create a long-lasting, flawless base. It will also create a smooth ‘canvas’ (so to speak) to begin with, before you go ahead and apply your foundation. Some primers I would highly recommend are the following: Benefit’s ‘Porefessional’ primer for all skin types. Its smoothing and creates a great base. It also holds up very well under the heat. Rimmel ‘Stay Matte’ primer is also a great option for oily or combination skin, on a budget. For dry skin I would recommend Smashbox ‘Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer’, its an essential for anyone with dry skin.

Moving onto to foundation

Being based somewhere like the Maldives, you want to obtain a natural looking healthy glow and bronzed look, it comes with the territory Laura Mercier - ‘Illuminating Tined Moisturiser’. This is one of the favourites. it is suited for generally any skin type. Tarte - ‘Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay’ Tined Moisturiser, SPF 20. Again, this works for most skin types. However, if like me, you do want to use foundation daily, or perhaps for a special occasion, date night, evening out etc… then here are my recommendations to beat the heat!

and your usual concealer, the key is to set your makeup with a loose/pressed powder. A light hand is key. you don’t want to apply to much and cause the ‘cake effect’ however, if you set your makeup it will ensure a longer lasting base. (Personally, a pressed powder is the most important thing I carry in my makeup bag!) I would recommend the following: Mac Mineralise Skinfinish L’Oreal Paris Translucide Naturally Luminous Loose Powder Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder Benefit Cosmetics ‘The Porefessional Agent Zero Shine. (Great for oily skin!)

The S Pursuit was founded in 2015, by Stephanie Selbie. An image consultancy based business, with a focus on personal styling & corporate grooming. The S pursuit has a real passion for creating the perfect image, whether it be for business, corporate or personal purposes.

For Oily Skin: Sephora 10 Hour Wear Perfection Foundation. This is great for oily skin and is a nice price point. Rimmel ‘Stay Matte’ is great for oily skin on a budget. It isn’t too heavy and will stay put for the majority of your day. Mac ProLong Wear Foundation

For Combination/ Normal Skin: Bare Minerals, Original Foundation Make Up Forever, HD Invisible Cover Foundation

I would advise that if you don’t suffer from and severe redness or blemishes, then try switching from a foundation to a tined moisturiser.

For Dry Skin:

My top three recommendations are

Clinique Moisture Surge, SPF 15 Nars Sheer Glow Foundation Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation

The Balm - ‘BalmShelter’ Tinted Moisturiser.

After you have applied foundations

Revlon. ColourStay Foundation

II Tones

By Ihusana Thoufeeg

60 VIBE | issue 9 - 2016 vibetrends.com

Two Tones, Synced as One

VIBE is eager to meet with a newly formed band of two. They bring out the best in each other and when you meet them, you know they are like two peas in pod; they are Lahoo and Humey – joined together as “II Tones”. VIBE: How did you decide to be a musician? Lahoo: Rather than a musician, I was interested in singing. So when i was 5 years old, I participated in my first singing competition. So since then i have not stopped. Humey: Me too! I started singing when I was 5 years old and by participating in my first singing competition as well! *High Fives* Humey: But I wanted to play the guitar more. My family has a music background and it has always been influential on me as i have idolized most of them as i grew up. I started playing the guitar when i was in grade 8. VIBE: What inspired you to sing or to play music? Lahoo: As a child, i saw a lot of kids singing. I saw my cousins participating in singing competitions and I begged my mother to let me participate as well. Humey: I have been singing ever since I remember. But to play the guitar, rather than inspiration, it was interest. VIBE: When did you decide “Music” is going to be your career? Lahoo: Honesty, I think it was when we made this band. I have always wanted to make a band with another girl, a two-piece band. But I never found the perfect partner to make a band with all these days! All this time I took this as a hobby; singing a song once or twice a year or performing when my friends request me to.

we took a break and went somewhere in the backstage. Then I asked Humey, “Do you know a girl who knows how to play the guitar” and she says, “I’m here!” Then I look at her and say, “LET’S MAKE A BAND!”!

Humey: I studied business. I didn’t think I would end up here. Even I realized that this is the career I want after we made the band. VIBE: How did you start the band? Lahoo: So at the Olympians with Youth show last year, we would go practice and see each other there. It was the last show and while the show was go-

ing on live, we took a break and went somewhere in the backstage. Then I ask Humey, “Humey, do you know a girl who knows how to play the guitar” and she says, “I’m here!” Then I look at her at say, “LET’S MAKE A BAND!”!

.......................................................................

Humey: So then we were talking about how long we have been looking for a partner to make a band with! Lahoo: I didn’t know she played the guitar when I asked her. It’s not something you can just randomly ask a person when you just met them! VIBE: So why did you name your band “II Tones”? Lahoo: So me, Humey, Ibbe and Shabeen went on a coffee, especially to decide on a name! Humey: First we thought of using our names, since that didn’t work out well, we moved to our interests. We wrote so many names! Lahoo: The coffee lasted for 2-3 hours and finally Ibbe took the book, wrote “II Tones” on the book and gave it back. That moment the both of us just gasped and decided that, II Tones is going to be our name! VIBE: When did you guys start? Humey: November 2015. VIBE: Have you guys already performed together? Humey: We have performed in a couple of places, but not a lot. Lahoo: We first performed at Ellaidhoo, it was an opportunity given by Tin. VIBE: Any place worth mentioning? Humey: Fannuge Dharin! That was our ultimate moment! Lahoo: We were singing Zero Degree’s Kalhu Soru and Nashid was there! HE came dancing! Humey: We were teared up! VIBE: As you are women, how do you feel like working in this industry?

......................................................................

......................................................................

Humey: Why not! More women should try this! After making the band, I feel like this is what I was meant to do! The practices and travelling is tiring but it all worth it when you are doing something you love! Lahoo: That’s the point. Do what you love, no matter what! I’m a single mom Humey: and I’m married! Lahoo: But we are still doing this. It’s tough! But not impossible. VIBE: How’s the support that you guys are getting? Lahoo: We get full support from our families, friends and Ibbe. Humey: My husband Thin, Mom Dad and everyone in my family too has been so supportive. Lahoo: Even my son, who is 4 years old, is very supportive. My family takes care of him while I’m away and they have been so helpful. We wouldn’t be here if our families weren’t this helpful and encouraging. VIBE: What type of music do you guys like to play together? Humey: We play unplugged, acoustic music. Live. VIBE: Who are the Maldivian musicians you look up to and get inspired from? Humey: ZERO-DEGREE! Lahoo: There’s no question about it. Humey: I also look up to Fasy. He has been very helpful when I was learning how to play the guitar. Also my Dhonbeybe, Bayse Ahmed. Lahoo: Likewise, Theyrava has been very helpful for me for a long time, even now. VIBE: Are you guys working on anything right now? Humey: Yeah. We are planning to release an original song. We don’t want to be a band that only plays covers. We also want to create our own songs. Lahoo: The name of the song is “Dhogu”.

63 63

FEATURE Humey: “Dhogu” by II Tones. It’s about the naughty and sly boys; play boys. About what they say, act; trying to “set” a girl.

......................................................

VIBE: So what are your future plans? Humey: Right now I want us to last and to continue on in the music industry. Lahoo: And within around five years, you won’t be seeing only the guitar. Vibe: You plan to play an instrument? Mind telling me what? Humey: That’s kind of tricky because she has not entirely decided on it. Lahoo: But I’m leaning more on the bass guitar. And a couple of minor instruments to back up the guitar. VIBE: What do you want to say to the potential Female musicians and singers? Humey: This is not impossible. Lahoo: it’s a good thing! There is a lot of demand for girls as well, because we can count how many female resort musicians there are, here in Maldives. Humey: There are female singers and musicians and I want to tell them to come out! You can even approach us and we will help you! Lahoo: We would be VERY happy when more girls come out and play music. VIBE: Is there anything else you guys want to add? Humey: We want to say our thanks. Lahoo and Humey: We want to thank our families and our friends. They are so supportive. Including, Ibbe, Shabeen, Shaan, Thin (Humey’s Husband), Annu and everyone else. Lahoo: We also want to thank the VIBE team. We just started and we want to thank you for giving us this opportunity. Humey: We want to thank everyone who supported us. VIBE: How can we check your work? Lahoo: Facebook! Humey: We have a page – II Tones Lahoo: On Instagram we have TWOTONESMV, that’s our user name.

TRAVEL

World’s Best Places to Travel in 2016 ACCORDING TO IJAA FROM THEISLANDLOGIC.COM

Am I a travel adviser? No. Have I traveled to any of the places on this list? Nope. Quitting smoking, staying fit and healthy: the new year is all about making resolutions, they’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain. Maybe traveling more in 2016 tops your list, but with so many places worth visiting, deciding where you want to go in 2016 can be a tough call. I started working on this list in mid-December last year and actually thought I will have the list ready before New Year, it was a great deal of reading and watching travel videos. Just think of all the cities from almost every continent and cultures from every walk of life, despite their differences, these places have a few things in common: they possess a diverse one-of-a-kind attractions, iconic sights, distinctive landscapes and food. Finally, I have done the difficult work for you by narrowing down the best places to travel in 2016

PRAGUE A city with a uniquely preserved historical center that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. It’s whimsical charms and bohemian allure attract thousands of visitors to Prague every year. The end of the Velvet Revolution in 1989 brought in investments and boomed tourism. You could spend an entire day wandering at the Prague Castle or the Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock, and devote the evening for a wholesome dinner at a classic inn. Prague’s best bars are found in cellars, where historic pubs set the scene for a night of traditional tippling.27

MARRAKECH Marrakesh – Better known as the “The Red Morocco City” is a marketplace where Berber tribes sell their goods and seek entertainment. Exploring the intimate piazzas, palaces, historic mosques and zigzag alleyways of the old Arab town can easily consume a day. Find inner peace at the tranquil Jardin Majorelle or infrequent getaways to the ville nouvelle (new town) for dinner and drinks can be indulging. Marrakesh has earned the status of Moroccan chic capital, attracting the rich, famous and royalty like a magnet.

OSAKA The third-largest city in Japan, popular for its good food. Osaka boasts the invention of the conveyor-belt sushi. You will frequently hear the phrase kuidaore (‘eat ’til you drop’). Although the city sometimes look like an endless stretch of concrete boxes, it makes up for it with some architectural structures and fascinating cultural gems, good ecological riversides and busy shopping areas. The real highlights to explore include the Osaka Castle, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyūkan and the nighttime scenery of the Dōtombori area.

SIEM REAP Siem Reap is best known for its gateway to the temples and ruins of Angkor Wat. The ancient structures in this rural beauty of Cambodia contained within one of the largest religious complexes in the world. Siem Reap has transformed itself as the center of the city’s backpacking trade, chic hotels, worldclass gourmet food, and lavish spas. Learn the art of cheerful haggling and bargaining at the Angkor Night Market, a crowded stretch of shopping stalls, food vendors, and bars.

LISBON Attracting travelers for hundreds of years, unbroken views divulge the city of Lisbon in all its glory with the ancient Moorish ruins and white-domed churches leading into the steep and narrow cobblestone streets. Bread and wine are traded for gossips and wonderful stories at patio bars, while fado singers continue performing in the background. In other areas of Lisbon, bohemian restaurants and late-night clubs come to life while roadside boutiques sell goods from antique to cutting-edge.

BARCELONA The city vibrates with life, and there is definitely no other city in Spain to speak of its chic style and sheer energy. It has long had a reputation of being the modern capital with its world-class art museums and galleries, designer restaurants and bars, and branded shops. Some of the must see attractions include Antoni Gaudí’s fanciful church of the Sagrada Família, the deteriorating mansions of the picturesque Gothic Quarter, and the city’s most famous street, La Ramblas – a broad pedestrian boulevard crowded until the wee hours.

TRAVEL

PALAU This is an archipelago of 200 or more unspoiled limestone and volcanic islands, covered in thick bright green forest, surrounded by greenish-blue color lagoon. Without doubt, diving and snorkeling tops the “things to do” list here, with truly world-class dive sites. Divers vow Palau’s magical seascape, captivating wrecks and impressive marine life – some people even refer to it as an “underwater Serengeti”. When you are done with the underwater marvels, try other activities – Kayaking and extreme off-road driving adventures are extraordinary.

SANTORINI Santoríni, the largest island in this mini-archipelago of Greece boasts it’s vibrant colored houses sliced in pumice layers on the cliff around sapphire waters of the Aegean Sea. The awesome views narrate a history so flamboyant that legend hangs as fact upon it. Here you’ll make the time stand still as you gaze and wander the black sand beaches. Oia is a picturesque town popular for its sunsets, overlooking two sides of the sea. Santoríni’s dry white wines are world-class, making it the perfect supplement with seafood served in the many restaurants and tavernas.

SAN JUAN The cheerful city of San Juan is the best known starting-point to explore the real culture and heritage of Puerto Rico. Learn its grassroots from the lively district of Old San Juan (El Viejo San Juan). Do not forget to visit the national monument, El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th century citadel which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then take a swim at the Luquillo or Carolina Beach, and tour the world’s most awarded rum and Spirit plant – Bacardi.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA Western Australia (WA) is no doubt Australia’s last unexplored region. ‘Up north’, you will find magnificent photogenic landscapes. There’s impressive and attractive ravines and waterfalls at Karijini National Park, and the Coral Bay offers amazing white sand beaches and a rich marine life. The Southwest has equally wonderful beaches, wide continuous area of wildflowers and lush green forests swarming with life. Worldclass surfers carving waves at Margaret River is frequent, while winemakers craft expensive wines complemented by the town’s hip restaurants and bars.

Everyone has their own idea of where their ideal vacation will take them. I have observed that majority of the people from Maldives, where I hail from, hesitate traveling and exploring new destinations. I worked in the airline industry for eight years, a lot of them travel to Colombo, Bangalore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai and recently trending Istanbul and other Indian cities. I agree that Maldivian passport holders have visa limitations traveling to many countries, but considering the amounts of money Maldivians spend abroad, they can actually save up to visit these places during the year-end vacation. Remember, travel gets expensive to those who have expensive tastes.
