We are very proud and honored to feature Ms. Haneefa Hilmy on the 11th Edition of VIBE. Its holiday season here in the Maldives, a great time and opportunity to experience a trip via Fly Dubai to Dubai and experience the great offers to Maldivians by Inner Maldives. This is a city of superlatives, and home to the world’s largest dancing fountain; the tallest building in the world, as of 2014, the Burj Khalifa stands 2,716 feet tall; the largest artificial islands (the Palm Islands); and the largest natural flower garden (the Miracle Garden). SMART QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK AT THE END OF EVERY JOB INTERVIEW A CANDIDATE WHO ASKS QUESTIONS DURING JOB INTERVIEW IS A CANDIDATE WHO GETS THE ATTENTION. “Do you have any questions for me?” is the inevitable question you’ll hear at the end of any interview. You should always ask the interviewer questions at that point to show that you are truly interested in the job. Asking the right questions can impress the interviewer — it can make you look thoughtful and enthusiastic. And don’t forget that interviewing is also a two-way street: it’s your chance to find out if the company is the right fit for you.

2. What are the skills needed to master this job? This question tells the candidate is truly interested in seeing whether he has what it takes to do the job instead of simply bluffing way through. Candidate has a chance to show why his skills align with the position.

THE BEST QUESTIONS TO ASK AT THE END OF EVERY JOB INTERVIEW

3. What are the prospects for growth in this job?

1. Why is this position available?

Someone who asks this is interested in furthering his career. It’s likely he will work hard in any situation or project. When you ask this question, the response will let you know if this is an employer who is accustomed to

With this question, you’ll learn whether the position is a new one or if you’re replacing someone else. A new position is a sign of growth and may spur other

interesting lines of discussion. If you’re replacing someone, that conversation may give you hints about what will be required. If they say, “Hannah couldn’t work the hours we asked,” that could be a red flag if you’re a mom of two and can’t work much overtime.

helping employees further their career goals.

6. Can I have a quick tour of the office?

4. What do you enjoy most about working here?

When hearing this question, the candidate is giving the position serious consideration and wants to see if the culture and workspace feel comfortable to him. If you ask the question and the employer says “No,” it may indicate: a) you’re not on the short list, b) this place is too busy, or c) they won’t prioritize your comfort now or in the future.

This gives you a chance to direct the conversation to the interviewer (something most humans enjoy) and shows your interest in his opinions and in the company culture. 5. When are you looking to start the right candidate? This opens a discussion that helps us align expectations early so there are no startling surprises later. If you tell you can’t start for two weeks because you want to give your current boss plenty of notice, you’re a person with ethical values.

The next time you’re in an interview, go prepared with a few questions of your own. We promise it will impress the interviewer and show that you’re a well-prepared, articulate candidate!

haneefa hilmy creative inspiration It was a childhood dream and she never stopped trying. Her aim was to create something absolutely worthwhile and prevalent that would make Maldives shine globally. She is a dreamer, believer and an achiever. We are very proud and honored to feature Ms. Haneefa Hilmy on the 11th Edition of VIBE. She spent most of her days overseas; in Colombo and London. Despite the dreams of becoming an architect in the early days, her plans changed when she moved to London. The city of London made her grab a lot of interest towards fashion and lifestyle. This initiated her to consider higher studies in the industry. Upon completion of her course in fashion merchandising; she developed deeper interest towards the fashion industry. After coming back to the Maldives in 1988, she wanted to pursue her dream, not just portray herself but create something different in the entertainment industry. It wasn’t just modeling for her. It became her passion!

The start ‘More than the designing part, I was

always interested in the entertainment business. During my first days back, I didn’t really think of setting up a business or anything as such, but after getting married in the year 1990, I figured it’s high time I do something. After I had my two kids; that’s the time I really

Along with my then husband, we came up with an idea to open up a shop. We wanted it to be innovative and eye catching. The name He&She was inspired from my favorite shop in London; what she wants. Everything about He&She was different.’

feelings, I guess. That was our first advertisement. And it turned out to be really something! It was completely contemporary back then. People were sort of interested to at least go check out the shop even if they weren’t going to buy anything. It was all just because of the advertisement. If it wasn’t for that, I doubt if He&She would’ve gotten such popularity.’

What was so different about He&She?

Expansion of business and challenges

‘Undoubtedly it was the ads which

‘The two years, it was incredible. But I have to admit that it was rather challenging too. Considering the fact that the society was very conservative and especially, during those days; if you have a good family background and if you come from a good family they don’t really expect you to go on TV or anything as such. But the good thing about this was that I saw how people were picking up and following through. We actually brought a boom to the industry!

thought I should start something in the Maldives.

grabbed most of the attention! I realized we had to advertise as that was basically the only way to approach people. But since I always wanted to create something new over here, that’s when I thought that I could really introduce modeling and that I could expand this business to an entertainment business like how I’ve always wanted. It was completely new back in the days anyway. I got this group of students who were at CHSE during that time. They used to be very interested in the shop. Within the space of one month, I got this group together and went to TV Maldives. By myself, I directed a video for the first time. They were quite reluctant to do the advertisement at first. The girls and boys really didn’t want to come out. They worried about what the society might think of them if they come out as fashion models. A little held back, maybe. But they were very excited about this too. Mixed

After sometime, a new boutique was opened and they did advertisements similar to ours too. Unfortunately, they couldn’t continue for too long.’ ‘Well, He&She expanded and we were doing very well. As it grew, we moved to a new location. STO building. There, we were offered to do advertisements and marketing shows. I did brainstorm few ideas for the weekendby shows photography there. However, most of these ads Nishan (Millzero) don’t easily go up on TV. It was always

very tricky to get permission for these advertisements to be broadcasted. There was this time once when I went down to meet the president to discuss about some matters; something completely irrelevant to this but he mentioned how he gave the authority to actually broadcast one of my advertisements on TV. I only knew it then when he mentioned and had to thank him for the gesture. Despite how hard it could’ve been, there were a lot of positive feedbacks which I kept getting on this too. That really charged me up and that gave me a boost to start up an entertainment company for real.’ ‘It was a serious matter then, even for an advertisement. It was so difficult to get an advertisement to be broadcasted. It got more tedious as time passed and we gained more of an audience. It was the talk of the town, and I was very well received to have done it all by myself along with my team. People were appreciating it and I got more inspired that I would go on to open an entertainment company. The company dealt with modelling, entertainment and shows.’

Highlights ‘I was actually the first person to model abroad and represent Maldives in India and internationally. I was on various magazines, in India during that time. Getting to be featured on the Bounty ad is definitely going to be a highlight! I was featured in a German documentary which represented Maldives along with the bounty ad taken in Soneva. This ad would show the beauty of our country too. It was featured on the German national airways. Some people would notice me and come up to say hello.’ ‘Apart from all of that, I really do think I had an awesome team with me working on each project. The ad you must’ve recently seen on Facebook which was done years back? That was done by Tedry. We encouraged DJ Umar to come out as well. It was not only about the modeling. The entertainment sector as a whole is about the creative work. Music is essential too. It caught so much attention. First few shows we pulled off were click 1993 and Golden Jubilee

Tourism minister offered me to handle marketing sector of Germany but I didn’t want to get involved with politics. As much as some wanted me to get involved in politics I wanted to stay focused on my goals.

This was something new again! This was how I got so motivated to form an Entertainment Company. It was so exhilarating back then. Little creative things we do to overcome certain things were actually helping us expand and think bigger.

I did get the offer to do my masters in Australia but since my kids were small, I really didn’t want to miss out on being with them. To me, my children matters the most. Later on, I was very much laying low with everything because I was more focused on getting them the education they needed and being with them. My last show was at Club Med Maldives and it was well appreciated by the crowd.

Huge number of people were interested to work with us. We did talent scouting and used to pick people from the streets too. Of course, it was not an easy job but the working team with us? They were amazingly incredible! Going back to the days, I can only recall the very good times! Mainly, it was just all about how we handled the whole thing as a team. Both good and bad times were handled well as a team and I guess I managed to lead them out very well too.’

Future goals

‘There was a rise and fall of He&She. That was the saddest part for me. The family got split up and the toughest part for me was to leave behind something which I created. It was horrible during the fall as a lot happened which involved matters to be dealt at the court and finances too. Letting go off He&She was hard but that opened doors for Lime Light to shine. After the divorce, I thought I’d do something solely mine this time. Lime light productions came in to the scene only then.’

‘I really want to come up with my own fashion label and something innovative again in the future. I am willing to spend and do my best if that is to be appreciated in terms of applause and financial gain. As my intentions in stepping into this field was to bring out a talented bunch in to the entertainment sector and make sure that their success was maintained; not because of my leadership wholly but because of their strength and commitment in maintaining a team effort. Although the impression of people in the sector are not of high standards, it will be surprising to know that most of those people who were involved back in the days are now successful career women and men in their respective fields. The main issue within the field today is lack of opportunities. If everyone comes together in support of all talents, something remarkable could be achieved. I do have the idea of creating an innovative company and expanding my business more on design and entertainment in the future too. The main objective is to follow my passion and not the rewards to it. My family has been very supportive in terms of maintaining my passion and being focused on the field. A huge credit goes to them, my kids especially.’

I was offered jobs that were more catered for those with higher academic qualifications and I really didn’t want to cause a stir and spur jealousy.

We at VIBE, wish Ms. Haneefa Hilmy a very bright future ahead and we had a lovely time with her! Keep inspiring more people!

‘Actually, Mr. Deen was the first person who really encouraged me to start this, I mean he was supportive of this and I actually put it up to them that we should have entertainment based shows; fashion shows and cultural shows by selling tickets. I was always thinking of how to give an earning to the team behind me as well. The models, drummers and everyone involved.’

SUPPORT RELATIONSHIP

Keep Falling in Love . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Everyday Written by Riala

Clandestine meetings. Whispered secrets. Months of planning. That secret smile as both exchanges “I do”. This is a story we all know and love and many of us have experienced. We know all too well how to woo and please each other when dating or escorting. We listen and give in to each other’s dreams on the wedding party and honeymoon destinations, and plan together. With much laughter, sharing and contributions we begin to weave a beginning of a dream together. A beautiful marriage to last a lifetime. A beginning of a love story. Usually the same. Always hard to resist. But then suddenly everything begins to fall apart. Frist it’s the duties and other commitments that won’t give you time together. Then you start to miss the other person’s share of commitment in things that matter to you. Then you begin to come up with excuses to defend your partner’s absence and lack of attention, to family members and friends. With all that life

It’s not news that when you get married, you are more in love than you ever thought you’d be. But then you never expect to fall out of love either. Who would? throws at you, you feel that you don’t need any more to complain and whine. That you deserve more from someone who ought to understand your sacrifices and effort. “Nothing I do pleases her” and “I don’t know why he never listens” become few

conversations starters among group of friends you meet over coffee. You see the drift getting wider and wider between you and your partner and often wonder how and why it happened. Well, let’s see how it happens. It’s not news that when you get married, you are more in love than you ever thought you’d be. But then you never expect to fall out of love either. Who would? After all that you invest emotionally and financially into the relationship! But sorry to pop your bubble… you can and may fall out of love if you don’t keep on trying. To be in love, you need to put in a lot of effort. Weddings mark the true beginning of the love story, though it’s sometimes hard to see it that way. Oftentimes we think it’s the end of a love story. Life after marriage is always a “happily-ever-after”. That’s is probably why we dream and plan till the big day. But how many of us discuss what goes on after the “I do”.

25

RELATIONSHIP SUPPORT

While there may be some young men and women who still blush at the very idea, most of us in this society are fairly informed on the subject. In fact, it wouldn’t be entirely inaccurate to say that marital bed is among the top 5 reasons why we get married. There is something to be said about chemistry between two adults that grows and blossoms and explodes into something beautiful and lasting. What is it about the marital bed? Why is it such a huge part of our relationships? When and how exactly did the exchange of bodily fluids which would otherwise be disgusting be perfectly acceptable and even arousing? And how can this be used to strengthen the bond of marriage? So you keep falling in love over and over, even after marriage, every day. Let’s talk about some of the most important things with regard to the special act between a husband and wife.

1. Know your partner

It wasn’t a big deal when you had to cancel your favorite football match so you and your girlfriend can go to a dinner with her friends, while you were dating. Same thing will have to be applied to your marriage. You need to understand each other’s wants and respect their wishes to be able to function as a team. Being there for each other and supporting them in times of distress and in need will strengthen you bond and that you will only be able to know if you truly know and understand your partner well enough.

26 VIBE | issue 11 - 2016 vibetrends.com

3. Attention 2. Conto sent detail Many of us are of the notion that consent is not as relevant within wedlock. This is a dangerous thought. A person does not become less of an individual for being a husband or wife. It’s always important to consider your partners mood and general wellbeing before initiating any intimate act as lovemaking.

Attention to detail is something most of us forget once in a steady relationship. That

4. Cuddling

6. Never stop 5. TryCom- ing pliment Cuddling is one of the essential ingredients to tighten a bond between two people. It confirms comfort and care by touching and hugging, building trust between the two people. Show your partner you love them and find them attractive. A little touch, kiss or hug here and there would certainly not go remiss. To quote a favourite song, “A kiss is not a contract, but it’s very nice”. Affection should not just be something used to lead up to marital extra curriculars. Affection should be given freely, expecting nothing in return.

Noticing only each other’s looks and how quickly they age and wondering how time flew so fast is not going to help you or your relationship. You need to look deeper than that. Remember what drew you to your

is the little things that your partner likes, like a foot-rub or a back massage. Those special things that you can do to heighten the mood and make the time you spend together a more pleasurable experience for the both of you. Be more aware of your partner’s quirks and likes. Find out what makes him/her most excited. Explore and play.

partner (apart from their appearance), in the first place. It’s not just the other person who’s changed in time, you did too. Accepting the fact will save you more than your crushing spirit. You both need each other to uplift the spirit and keep the confidence. Complimenting on each other’s looks, capability and efforts will motivate and build confidence in both and lead to a healthy marriage.

Sure, you tried harder to please before getting married but once you had that neatly in the bag, you pay less and less attention to the buildup and more on the finish. Meaning the marital bed is all that you are interested in, and not the relationship. A relationship is not a concrete set up that you build on a day and expect it to last like that. It’s something you need to work on every single day and night, to be certain its holding strong. In which the marital bed, is your playground. You need to apply all the above and play around and please each other for your marriage to stay strong. To be able to keep falling in love, every day with your spouse. To turn your “I do’s” into truly forever. Don’t give up or let go until death truly does you apart.

HANNAH We are very proud to feature the first cover girl of VIBE magazine as our designer this edition. Hannah was undoubtedly the spotlight of this year’s bridal fair.

How did this all start? I can’t deny the fact that I’ve always been interested. My mom would make a lot of dresses. It’s probably from her that I got the initial exposure. I started working on little projects from her sewing machine. She is my biggest inspiration and will forever stay that way. As a kid, I was never too ambitious about becoming a fashion designer. It was more like a past-time hobby which went on to become a passion. I’ve enjoyed making dresses for my dolls back in the days. That was my leisure time activity, although I hardly get to reach the paddle. Took me a while to reach it. Sewing was pretty common back then as not everyone could buy nice dresses. My mom would sew mine. She kept enlivening me day after day with her inspiring work which unfolded in front of my eyes. It was truly a blessing.

How did you end up as a fashion designer? It’s a bit humorous when I think of it now, I really wanted to be chef as a

kid. Of course, I still love cooking! I have friends and family looking forward for my cooking days too. *chuckles* But maybe the whole focus on fashion designing, came to me once I moved away from Male’. As I said earlier, I’ve always found the interest in designing and living with mom, it’s one of the things she does best so I reckon it’s safe to say that she is my primary motivation. I did my fashion designing course in Sri-Lanka. It was an amazing experience! Maybe not the place for you to really explore a lot of fashion brands, but I started it there and I know I’ve gained so much in terms of knowledge and exposure. Apart from fashion designing, I love travelling! I live to travel. It’s one of the things that makes me feel complete. Travelling to me is about finding art everywhere. As it’s repetitively said, we should always collect memories not materialistic objects. It also helps me with the work I do too. I’m a very keen observer and I tend to find beauty in a lot of things. The architecture, people and the surrounding as well. The more I travel, the more I am exposed to different cultures and tradition. It’s no surprise that it reflects in my work as fashion trends are mainly influenced by the region and country it origins from. When it comes to fashion, I do try to make myself better. Observe, understand and learn. There are brands that I follow and love too. Most of them are so

What do you think is the most important thing to look for as a fashion designer and what are you currently working on? Client satisfaction is the utmost pillar. A happy customer is what keeps you going, surely! I want the design to look absolutely impeccable from every angle and I really try hard to match up to my expectations. Currently I am designing some uniforms for the staffs of Linchpin. It’s an honor to design for them. My samples are already presented and they seem to be very satisfied with it too! This would be my next big step.

Truth is, there’s so much raw talent out there; within the entire industry. Opportunities are knocking on our doors and we should be able to take it up and embrace them

What are your biggest achievements till day and how far have you made progress?

I took my own time, honestly. Really didn’t start up as soon as I got back Male’. It is a bit hard for me to come out and be the face. I’d rather want somebody else to go cover it up for me. *shy laughs* I guess I don’t really have that in me; probably why I’ve only been doing designs just for family and friends for a long while. It’s such a pleasure to be able to do what you love doing for your peers. I must say, the start of VIBE gave me a push though. That’s when people really got to know me and the work I do. VIBE was a good start. But my first time was during college days at Hilton Colombo. The fashion show was called Chic and that happened to be an amazing experience! ☺

I consider customer satisfaction as the biggest achievement, but bride fair this year was remarkable. The feedbacks I got really overwhelmed me. How they encouraged me and appreciated my collection was definitely very motivating! There’s more to come in the future, hopefully. However, I always feel very content when clients love the design. That’s what matters to me the most. I consider client satisfaction as the biggest achievement.

What are your future goals and where do you see yourself in 5 years? I cannot wait to develop my name as an international brand. That would be my target and dream. I want to do so much in the next five years. One would be to get international recognition or be able to present one of my collections in London fashion week or in platform of such stature. I believe that I can show my best work overseas as we do have restrictions and limitations in designing here in the Maldives.

What limitations are you speaking of and how do you think can you overcome this? I guess it’s about certain cultural norms and societal pressure. Things have been slowly falling into place, but some are still hesitant to really go out there and be in their element. It’s the negativity that is discouraging talented people out there. Although I hope, things get better in the long run. Truth is, there’s so much raw talent out there; within the entire industry. Opportunities are knocking on our doors and we should be able to take it up and embrace them with our arms open wide. In time, certain things will change here as well. If not, grabbing your chances and showcasing your work somewhere more liberal is a must. For anyone interested in pursuing their career goals in fashion designing, I think there is scope for them. You need to have the passion and motivation to make yourself move forward!

Last words? I’m here today mainly with the help of my family friends. I really didn’t think I would be able to pull it off at the bridal fair this time, but I’m blessed with such an amazing bunch! It turned out to be a massive success because of their endless help. I’m so grateful for every one of them. A big thank you to Hus-

sein, Nashidha and Sham; to whom I wouldn’t be here without today. I may not be able to name every single of them, but I’m pretty sure they know who they are! I cannot express how delighted I am for having such amazing friends and family. Thank you all. We, at VIBE wish Hannah the best of days ahead! It was a joy doing this interview with her.

She concluded on the topic by emphasizing how the beauty of Maldives had spoiled her, and how it was going to be hard to feel the same emotion anywhere else in the world. I am afraid the majority of the world doesn’t understand the risk of not taking action on the matter”, she said. She went on to state that Maldives and all the other amazing islands deserve to exist forever, and that it would be a major crime on our part, if we do not start taking it seriously. When asked about her current trip, Sanja noted that she was a special guest of the Lily group, and had visited Hideaway Beach Resort and Lily resort, where she had been accompanied by VIBE magazine. She acknowledged Mr.Nasir and the team of Lily group for the opportunity to visit Maldives a second time, the warm welcome and the amazing treatment she received. Sanja said that it enabled her to “create a lifetime of memories and feel like Maldives was really her second home”. On her resort experience, she said that “Hideaway Resort is so private and intimate and simply gorgeous; while Lily Resort brings a different charm and beauty”. She enjoyed them both and had mentioned her photo shoots at both the locations. She was writing for her fashion and travel blog about the stay in both resorts and these can be found on www.royalbluebysanjapapic. net. Sanja when asked about the shooting of the cover page of VIBE magazine mentioned that she had a great time, and acknowledged that it was a great pleasure to work with Mr.Hussain Shiham. “Fashion is everything, it is a lifestyle. And besides his great talent for photography, I also appreciate his ambitious vision and the concept behind VIBE magazine”, she said. Sanja noted that “when you are continuously in touch with nature as Maldivians are, that is when you see the highest standards of fashion. Beauty is what we see and Maldivians see paradise each and every day”. When asked about the shooting itself, she mentioned

that it was “very natural, like her feeling towards Maldives; and did not necessarily follow stereotypical fashion standards that are usually seen as a must”. She was also very happy to have been able to show off some designer outfits from her home country of Serbia. As we concluded the interview, Sanja expressed her gratitude towards VIBE magazine for having given her the cover page opportunity and for giving her an experience of Maldives homes. It ended on this loving note. “People say home is where friends are; and Maldives gave me so many friends, VIBE magazine now being one of them. Thank you Maldives for making your beautiful country feel like my second home and I hope to be back to discover more and more about your amazing country in the near future”

The vibe travel diary Written by Ija (The Island Logic)

Dubai has been scoring and winning the hearts of hundreds of Maldivian holidaymakers as a favorite holiday destination for quite a while, it’s known as a cosmopolitan haven, a futuristic cityscape that towers over the Arabian Desert. While the best time to visit to avoid the extreme heat is January through March, we at the Vibe Magazine were invited to visit and explore this amazing city with FlyDubai while all the other arrangements were courtesy of Inner Maldives Holidays. We’ll share you our favorite experiences.

Dhow Cruise at Dubai Creek A dhow is a generic name derived from the historical sailing vessel which consisted of one or more masts with lateen sails used by fishermen, sailors and pearl divers in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea region, historians argue over the root of its inception as to whether it was invented by the Indians or the Arabs.

Today, these traditional boats have transformed lives, they have become floating restaurants decorated with colorful lights and seating arrangements that can accommodate 150 guests or some even more, and are one of the best ways to experience the Dubai waterfront. Many travel companies in UAE offer Dubai Dhow Cruise as a tour and attraction to thousands of tourists visiting the country. Alongside the 8.7 mile creek from the heart of Dubai, the fascinating rows of lights, from bow to stern, on the boats at night is one of the incredible visual attractions, these tours include

sumptuous Arabic barbeque buffet dinners with a great variety of meat (chicken lamb, beef) and vegetables and various entertainment acts ranging from live music, to belly dance and tanoura dance, youla and traditional folk dance. The net result of an evening on a dhow is to feel your life change, for one night you can have moments filled with calmness, peacefulness, and refreshing relaxation. Depending on the Dhow cruise package, the cost per person can range between Dhs120 and Dhs410 for adults, and Dhs100 to Dhs400 for

47

travel children. This depends on the type of cruise opted for and whether dinner is included in the cruise or not, whether the dhow offers wifi service or not. It’s worth spending a little more, so that you don’t compromise the quality and service of the experience. Guests can arrange to get picked up and dropped back to their accommodation and these transfers are usually included in the price of the tour packages. On Wednesday June 1, 2016, at 7.30 in the evening, a four wheel drive picked us up from our Dubai hotel, Carlton Palace Hotel located in Deira and dropped right next to the dock where rows of beautiful Dhows anchored, all of them were lit and lined up waiting for passengers to board before setting sail. Our driver escorted us to one of the Dhows, and we boarded ourselves on to the fully air-conditioned lower deck of it. There was nobody at all in the lower deck, we waited ten minutes and found that everyone was on the top deck, we asked one of the crew members and got permission to climb to the top deck to feel the breeze over the water and see the brightly lit shoreline of Dubai. It made the perfect combination and moment even more satisfying and soothing. View of Dubai landscape with its various sized buildings. At 9pm, our Dhow picked up its anchor and started its journey, we sat comfortably in our seats at our table, enjoying the colorful views of the Dubai landscape with its various sized buildings as the dhow slowly glided down the shimmering waterways. The boat was fully equipped with all safety measures like life jackets, navigation instruments, radios, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. There could have been at least 150 guests accommodated on both decks of our boat, a good 20 minutes passed before a traditional tanoura folk dancer stepped into the open space of the top deck as an accompaniment. We watched him make continuous circles and spectacular patterns with his long swirling lit up skirt. He danced for about 10 minutes, we did manage to get closer to him to take few photos and video. Soon after his performance was over, the dinner buffet started. We had our plates full, sat back and relished a

48 VIBE | issue 11 - 2016 vibetrends.com

sumptuous dinner with a wide range of continental and oriental dishes while our Dhow gently glided past the brightly lit souks and some prominent landmarks of Dubai including the National Bank of Dubai, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the bridges across the creek. After finishing the dinner, we took a lot of memorable pictures of the brightly lit shoreline of Dubai and other Dhow’s on the creek. Dinner buffet during Dhow cruise The cruise lasted until 11pm. The driver who dropped us at the creek was waiting to receive us, a 15 minutes drive and he dropped us back to our hotel. The Dubai Dhow cruise was one of the best experiences we had in traditional Emirati hospitality with style. If you are planning a trip to the United Arab Emirates, make sure you take a tour and a meal aboard the oldest traditional boat, now being used to view the illuminated city on the shores of the Persian Gulf. Soothe your senses with gentle sounds of the waves and gain an exceptional visual treat. Note: Please note that transfers to the creek are shared with others who book the same tour, unless requested and paid to the booking agent as a private transfer. Dress code is recommended smart casual or the UAE national dress.

Dubai Desert Safari Who’s leaving Dubai without experiencing the Arabian Desert? The Dubai desert safari is an exciting activity you should add to your bucket list if you’re looking for real adventure in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it’s an electrifying chase through the Arabian Desert in 4x4’s trying to keep up the pace as they drift across the sand dunes, with the four wheels spinning in the immensely soft, fine, and multi-colored desert sands. It can be difficult to find out the best desert safari deal amongst hundreds of travel companies providing adventurous desert trips and each claiming to offer the best and the most cheapest. Ours were sponsored by Inner Maldives Holidays, so we didn’t

have to take the trouble of finding a needle in a haystack, everything was arranged and we had an itinerary in place. Our desert safari tour was on Friday, June 3rd - a 4×4 wheel van that could fit 6 people, plus the driver picked us at our hotel at 1630hrs and continued to pick two others who booked the same tour from a nearby hotel and then proceeded into the highway pulling off at a shop close-by the desert, there were many other vehicles and people were busy buying food, drinks and arabic scarf before entering the desert, the shop was quite crowded since everyone wanted to buy an arabic scarf to snap photos wearing it when in the desert. Each of us bought a scarf for AED 25/- (USD 7/-), the shop staff helped everyone tie it in Arabic style.

It’s like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert Our driver deflated the vehicle’s tires for it to handle the bumpy and soft terrain better, because wheels that are firm enough for city roads don’t work the same in the desert sands. He instructed us that the vehicle was ready, soon we hit the sand and things got a little wild as we embarked on one of the craziest rides of our life. Imagine your butt drifting in the air just inches above your seat, and we are not going to lie: some of you might need a sickness bag just in case you get major nausea. High up and over and around and down, we ascended huge sand dunes of different heights and angles and drove down, sometimes viewing directly the ground through the 4x4s windshield when the dune was so steep. We watched other 4x4s launching off sand dunes, at times it got closer to ours and we were screaming with excitement. It was very unpredictable, yet thrilling and scary, knowing that you’re seated in a 4x4 wheel drive that sometimes don’t touch the ground and with only the driver to steer it, skidding on the sand, spinning its wheels, hydroplaning, levitating, with the feeling about to tip over and who’s to assure us it wouldn’t? The drivers were amazingly skilled, but it can be a very dizzying sensation. The driver stopped the vehicle at an unmarked region of the sand dunes where there were a dozen other 4x4s at the secluded discrete location of the desert. We can’t exactly remember, but

49

travel

it could have taken at least 20 minutes from our last stop. All of us got off the vehicle to stretch our muscles and limbs, some were running up the sand dunes, snapping photos of the stunning desolate panoramic views of the Arabian Desert. Sand was everywhere, stretched into the distance as far as the eye could see - the warm hues in the sand contrasted with the bright blue tones of the sky broken by few white clouds. It was a spectacular view, and for a moment we even wondered if we were on the moon, standing in the desert was both distinct and at the same time exactly how anyone would visualized. It was filled with awe and fascination, trying to differentiate what we have been watching in the science fiction movies, and read in books and novels, from the actual sprawling terrain before us, the surface of the earth was sometimes-red-sometimesyellow-tinged sand and it was so fine it melted through the spaces between the fingers. We spent about half an hour taking photos and the vehicle took off, arriving at almost sunset at the gates of the desert camp. There were few camels lined up near the entrance, and riding them was free of charge for everyone who were in the tour. It was a great opportunity to be there, with the feeling of being at some kind of a fair. There were long rows of dining tables set aside a long carpet with pillows for seats, the center of the camp had a

50 VIBE | issue 11 - 2016 vibetrends.com

concrete stage, there were booths/ huts for food and beverages, one was for henna tattoos, and an open area to smoke hookah. Arriving at our camp for Sunset You spin my head right round, right round When you go down The first act of the evening was the Tanoura dance performed by a male dancer, it involved him spinning around in a circle for a length of almost 15 minutes non-stop, while using his long colorful costume to narrate a story. He kept spinning and spinning and it was amazing how much control he had over his own unsteadiness. By the end of it though he stopped and began spinning his skirt, the fascinating part of his costume was how it lit up, all the floodlights in the stage area were switched off for maximum effect and it was quite a sight. Then we had dinner, it was more or less typical spice-filled Arabic food– falafel with tahini sauce, hummus, samoas, pita bread, salad greens with dressing. The barbecued lamb and fish were scrumptious, they also had macaroni which was for the children. Fire dancer blowing fire from his mouth After dinner, we witnessed the spotlight of the evening, involving two performances, an impressive fire dance by a man and a Russian belly-dancer

who busted out some Shakira moves that completely grabbed everyone’s attention at the camp. The belly dance was the final performance and winded up the evening and the same vehicle that brought us and bashed the sand dunes, dropped us back to our hotel safe. We arrived our hotel at 2130hrs and were supposed to be leaving to the airport at 2200hrs, we had a flight to catch to Malé at 0130hrs early morning. This is certainly the most authentic experience Dubai can offer, so if you’re in Dubai do not miss it. We thank flydubai, a successful hybrid product and airline that operates 10 weekly flights to the Maldives, providing Maldivians low cost fares to Dubai and explore the marvels of this beautiful city. We also thank Inner Maldives Holidays, one of the premier and multi-award winning travel companies in the Maldives, a company that was built with the sole objective of providing the best destination management, and travel services to the booming tourism industry in the country, for taking care of our stay, the smooth transfers and awesome tours.

FITNESS

5 things not to do at gym avoid these most common mistakes 01 Don’t spend hours on one cardio machine

02 Don’t hide at the back of a class

04 Don’t ignore your weaknesses

‘Cardio is central to fat loss, but if you spend more than 50 per cent of your workout time on it, think again,’ says Levy. To really improve your shape, weight train. Your body will drain its glycogen stores doing weights, so if you do 20 minutes of cardio afterwards your body will switch to burning fat.

‘While group exercise is a great way to have fun and get fit, many of us join classes without being given any guidance on technique,’When classes are large, instructors can’t be expected to notice every single movement of every single person, so if you’re unsure, don’t be afraid to get yourself noticed! Bad form will not only cancel out the effects of all your hard work, but lead to poor posture, lack of enjoyment and possible injury. Instructors are there to do just that: instruct. So don’t be embarrassed to ask!’

‘We all have exercises we enjoy more than others, and that’s normally because we’re better at them, Take a step back and admit your weaknesses, then set about making them your strengths. If you have slim arms, but your thighs could do with some trimming down, sign up to a Spin class and include more squats and lunges in your programme. Perhaps you carry weight around your midriff? Chop into your waist with dynamic medicine ball movements and cable woodchops. Work on your weak areas and it won’t be long before you become the whole package.’

Whether you’re new to the gym or have been going for years, there are some errors that even experienced gymgoers make time and time again. Not only can this lead to boredom or lack of results, you could be increasing your risk of injury.

54 VIBE | issue 11 - 2016 vibetrends.com

03 Don’t just use fixed machines 05 Don’t abandon your goals We’ve all been there; you join the gym, an instructor shows you round the fixed resistance machines and you receive your new exercise programme – all on machines! ‘Although fixed machines do serve a purpose, especially for beginners, you’ll get more from your time and effort if you do a dumbbell or body weight circuit,’ ‘Many machines isolate one muscle, which means you burn fewer calories and work fewer muscles. Plus, if you’re not using a machine, you’ll work your core, which helps to build a more functional body.’

‘Working out with a partner or group of friends can be great fun, but if you’re training alongside someone with totally different goals, this can be detrimental to your own progress, ‘If your fitness levels are unevenly matched, or you enjoy different things, be honest with yourself and your training partner and go your separate ways after the warm-up. You can always enjoy a sauna or coffee together afterwards, or get together every week for a weigh-in and progress review, ‘You can still reap the benefits of joining the gym together, you just need to keep your goals in mind.’

HEALTH BENEFITS

Those who are not yet familiar with this seed may think of it as a grain, or at least a replacement for grains. The little tiny disc is actually a seed of a plant in the same family as beets, chard, and spinach. These nutritious, amino acid rich seeds are light and fluffy when cooked, with a little snap to it. You’ll also find the seed in a variety of beautiful colors such as gold, red, and even black.

For being such a tiny little seed, it is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. It is also a great source of manganese, magnesium, folate, phosphorus, and lysine, which is essential for tissue growth and repair. The minerals contained in relatively high amounts may also be especially helpful for those people who have consistent migraines, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.

BEAUTY

BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU SHOULDN’T SHARE

wand that comes with it be used; use only disposable wands to apply it, and never double dip.

3. Pressed foundation. It’s tempting to watch your best friend pull her favorite lipstick out of her bag and want to ask to use it when she’s done. But the truth is, you just shouldn’t—unless, of course, you have some spirit wipes to sanitize it. And here’s why: “Even though someone doesn’t have a visible cold sore, they can still carry herpes simplex virus HSV-1 and pass it off to you in one makeup application,” explain dermatologists. “That’s why it’s so important to reduce the risk of communicating these types of viruses and different types of bacteria to one another by using your own makeup.”

Below are the Beauty products you should not share: 1. Any beauty products that comes in a jar. If you have to dip your fingers into a cleanser, day or night cream, eye creams, foundation, lip balm, etc., it’s

58 VIBE | issue 11 - 2016 vibetrends.com

best that you wash your hands before coming into contact with the formula and/or keep that product for your own personal use. “You don’t want to create a petri dish out of the cream you’re going to be applying to your face, especially since your body absorbs 60 percent of whatever you apply on your skin (and the bacteria that comes with it).

2. Mascara. Your favorite mascara can harbor bacteria and viruses that are easily transmissible, like conjunctivitis. And since your eyes don’t have the same layers of protection that your skin does, it’s more susceptible to infections like pink eye. Plus, each time you pull the wand out and push it back in to lube up the brush head, you push air into the dark bottle’s base, feeding the aerobic bacteria that can survive in an oxygenated area. Basically, the only safe way to share your mascara, if you so desire, is to practice what pro makeup artists do and never let the

Dry powders don’t hold onto bacteria the way that wet formulas do, but that doesn’t mean you can’t transfer bacteria from one person to another— especially if you’re using a sponge to touch up areas around your mouth or eyes. The only safe way to let your girlfriend use your pressed powder, should she need to touch up her shiny forehead in a selfie emergency, is to spray the powder with a spirit spray or cologne, give her a clean makeup brush to use, and have her swipe it over pressed powder once.

4. Lipstick or balm. Lipstick and balms are a hard no to sharing unless you wipe to sanitize them. A large percentage of people carry HSV-1, but just because it’s in your system doesn’t mean you ever show signs of it externally. That’s why it’s so important to use your own lip products, because if you pass your favorite lipstick around from girl to girl and you or your friend has the virus, you could be transferring bacteria or

HSV-1 and never know it. And then you won’t know if you have the capability to develop a cold sore of fever blister until you have it, which is unfortunately too late.

infection, hepatitis, or blood-borne viruses.

5. Lip gloss.

1. Anything in a pump.

Again, you’re not only pushing air back into the base of your gloss every time you reapply it, but the moist, dark, gummy formula you’re sticking the wand into is the perfect place for bacteria to breed. If it’s your own bacteria, that’s one thing, but you never want to introduce someone else’s bacteria into the formula because HSV1 and, more frequently, the common cold can spread.

6. Cream shadows. The tacky nature of these types of formulas can trap and harbor bacteria, so it’s best not to pass your cream shadow around to your friends while you guys are getting ready to go out. Especially since you probably use your fingers to apply this type of product and have contaminated it with your own bacteria.

7. Makeup brushes. Best practice though, if you are breaking out constantly, is to shampoo them weekly (and then condition them so they last a long time).

8. Toothbrushes. Again, this is a hard no, even though we’ve all been guilty of doing it. The mouth is filled with bacteria—good and bad. The bad ones are called anaerobic oral bacteria, which are responsible for the smelly volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) smell if you forget to brush or teeth, or that heighten when you have an infection. That’s why it’s so important to brush your teeth regularly (morning and night and after meals if you’re susceptible to cavities) to keep this bacteria at bay and why you shouldn’t be sharing a toothbrush with anyone.

9. Razors. Razors are important to not share, even though stainless steel doesn’t carry bacteria for very long, you can still transfer warts or genital herpes—if you or your friend has either—by someone using your razor or by using someone else’s. Even worse: Razors can nick you and draw blood or fluids, which leave bacteria on the blade after rinsing, making you more vulnerable to a staph

Safe to borrow from your friends: Whether it’s a fragrance, hair product, foundation, lotion—what have you—if it comes in a pump, it’s totally fine to share, since there isn’t that risk of contamination because you never come in contact with the product.

2. Liquid foundation. If your foundation is in a pump form, or if you apply the formula onto a clean sponge every time without touching the applicator to your face, then you can 100 percent share your favorite base with your friend. If the formula is in a jar that you dip your fingers into, again, you should be washing your hands before every application to avoid contaminating it and keeping it for your own personal use to avoid crossing bacteria

it’s so important to reduce the risk of communicating these types of viruses and different types of bacteria to one another by using your own makeup 3. Loose powder. Again, powders don’t have the moist environment for bacteria to thrive in like moist creams or mascaras do, so if you dip a fresh brush into your loose powder once, there is a less of a risk to transfer something to your friend.

to perfection. Whatever you do, don’t pass your friend your lash curler with leftover makeup on it, because the minute she applies it to her eyes, you open up the chance to pass on any bacteria that might be living in the remaining liner or mascara residue. Get in the routine of wiping off your curlers every time you—or your friends—use them. Same goes with tweezers; not much risk there, but just wipe them down.

6. Hair brushes. In reality, the only thing to worry about with using someone else’s brush is transferring lice, but since it’s not that prominent in teens and adults (unless you have a kid who goes to school and brings lice home), it’s not the end of the world if you use your girlfriend’s hair brush. That said, it’s good practice to minimize brush sharing and, since brushes are generally not expensive, she suggests just getting a travel brush and popping it in your purse so you always have it on hand.

7. Nail polish. Very little bacteria is able to grow in these types of lacquer formulas, so they’re OK to share for that reason. The only way you could get an infection from any type of sharing when it comes to nail products is if you use someone else’s tools, like nail or toenail clippers or cuticle nippers that aren’t properly sterilized. To that same point, this is why it’s important to go to a reputable nail salon that cleans their tools after each manicure and pedicure, and that has washable basins sans jets. Why? Bacteria from the previous customer’s feet can seep into the jets, sit there, and grow, and then get pushed out back into your clean tub when the jets turn on for your pedicure.

4. Lip and eye pencils. Anything that can be sharpened back to a brand new state is OK to share, because you shave away any chance of bacteria as you sharpen it.

5. Eyelash curler. Metal and stainless steel don’t hold onto bacteria long, so it’s OK to wipe these down with an antibacterial wipe or even a spirit tissue, and freely pass it onto your friend to curl her lashes
