The city has always been an engine of the country. People, jobs, intellectual life to the coffee houses. Where the people gather to discuss politics and gossip. Without the city we might not have had the opportunities to travel and now inspired by the ferries. And yet city life is not easy. The start of over crowding brought cholera in the past. While the modern city might be a haven for the youth to engage in the technological world and meeting up in coffee tables it is also a deeply unnatural and overwhelming place. Some have begun to examine how the city effects the brain, and the results are chastening. just being in an urban environment researchers have found, impairs our basic mental processes and social life. After spending a few minutes on the crowded Majeedhee Magu, city’s longest road, the brain might be less able to hold memory and suffers from reduced self control. When it is long been recognised that city life is exhausting. That’s one reason many have left their homes and fled to the neighbouring countries India, Srilankan and Malaysia. Sometimes while I walk, I wonder where does all these people get in the night to sleep. The locals and the expatriates. New research suggests that cities actually dull our thinking, sometimes dramatically so. Still for many of us MaleW‘ city is home. Home is where the heart is. Our loved ones and family are here. Studies have demonstrated, for instance that hospital patients recover more quickly when they can see trees from their windows. and that women living in public housing are better able to focus when their flats overlooks a grassy or green courtyard. Which is almost absent in Male’. First of all many of us don’t even have a decent place to live, eat and sleep with our families. My heart breaks when I mention this. The Maldivians cross an important milestone. Majority of the population reside in Male’city. For a species that evolved to live in small primate islands

on the Indian ocean, we are crowded into concrete jungles, surrounded by taxi’s, traffic and thousands of strangers. In recent years it’s become clear that such unnatural surroundings have important implications for our mental and physical health and can powerfully alter how we think. The Maldivian life style is such that people who really work they work, and shift to there jobs. While some remain voluntarily and forcefully unemployed. They work through out the night, even doubt they get few hours of sleep. Coffee and talk all night at cafe’s is the latest trend. Yet many of us are up in the morning again going back to work. Interesting though. If we look into ways to make Male city less damaging , the lives less stressful the good news is that even slight alterations, such as planting more trees in the inner city or creating urban parks with a greater variety of plants and everyone holding hands to improve the social fabric and especially assist the youth for a healthy life style can significantly reduce the negative side effects of city life. Sounds like a dream. The mind needs nature and even a little bit can be a big help. When we get out of Male’ city even for few hours most of us feel and we tend to say it’s relaxing and soothing. That’s proof to it. The question remains where is the space?Who is going to take the initiative to do it? Yet, I personaly love this city, my hometown. I could work all day wearing many hats, go for a coffe with a friend to talk gossip or an intellectual discussion. Go visit family or an elderly relative, return home cook, eat and be with my husband Hassan and have quality time with my one year old son Hawi Hasnain. And wind up a day going for a round in the motorbike the most common form of enjoyment in Male’ city. For me that’s quality of life. Yet thoughts might differ. How many of us will do the same here. Which might not be possible in a bigger city. So if we think positively Male’ city might be one of the most beautiful city to live, yet with few alterations. Only we the people of this country could make a change. As change seems to be the only thing permanent in our lives.

FOOD & NUTRITION

Back to

Basics

i

If you’re flicking through Healthy Living, it’s likely that you spend at least some time thinking about what you eat and how you eat it. Staying on top of your nutrition is tough for the average person. Work, travel, time, money and many other factors can get in the way of your “dream” diet.

EAT A LITTLE LESS

This one isn’t rocket science. Try to keep a handle on portion sizes if you want to tackle your nutrition head on. If you’re in charge of the cooking, scale back the amount you’re putting on each plate. Even something as simple as switching out your jumbo-sized diner plates for something smaller can help. If you’re dining out, eat half and take the rest home or try skipping appetizers. Alternatively, order two appetizers and skip the main course. And watch out for dessert!

EAT AT HOME MORE OFTEN

A lot of restaurant food can be high in sodium and portion sizes can be out of control. Temptation is higher when dining out -- splitting a desert or opting for fries instead of salad can undo a lot of good work. If you eat at home, you’re more likely to plan out your meals and make healthier choices. You also keep control over the quality and quantity of the ingredients.

STOCK UP ON THE GOOD STUFF

When you remove all the junk and processed foods from your home, the kitchen might feel a little bare. Replace these foods and snacks with healthy alternatives -- make sure you buy things you’ll enjoy eating to avoid waste. Fruit, nuts, seeds and veggies are all great snack to keep around for when hunger strikes.

28 VIBE | OCT 2013 www.vibetrends.com

Start with one or two, or go for them all in one sitting.

if you’re looking to jump start your diet and nutrition. Start with one or two, or go for them all in one sitting. Replace bad habits with good habits and you’ll soon see and feel the results.

AVOID WHITE FOODS

If it’s white and it’s edible, it’s probably fairly low in nutritional goodness. White processed breads, bleached pastas, rice and sugar, all of these are on the low end of the nutritional spectrum. Also, avoid high fructose corn syrup -- it’s the worst! If you can, switch to a natural sweetener like raw honey or date sugar.

DRINK MORE WATER

Switch out sugar-filled juices and sodas for water. You’ll save money and avoid the crash that comes along with calorie heavy drinks. One 12 oz can of soda can have as many as 150 calories. If you ditch one soda a day, that’s 1,050 calories per week, or roughly half a day’s eating.

Few would disagree, but music is one of the many things that’s transforming our social culture today, gone are the days we were entertained by local artists singing to borrowed tunes from neighbors. A new wave of young artists are redefining Maldivian music creating what they call, a little something of our own. By Munaz

Andhala, Anya as she prefers to be called, is one of the newest faces to steal limelight in the Maldivian music scene. She started singing at a very young age, and was recently featured on a Raagu, an exclusive television music production for young female artists. She received a warm welcome and at age 20, she is stubbornly determined about singing for a long time. I sat down with Anya for a coffee, to ask more about her career and future plans.s.

Do you remember how you started singing? My mom used to sing, when I was very young, I remember we used to sing all the time, I think that’s what got me interested

And that was when you began performing in School Singing Competition? Yeah, I participated from Ahmadiyya School and Jamaaluddeen. I am very happy about my performances back then. That was a great time. And once, I got first place when I was singing for Ahmadhiyya, and that was exciting.

Who supported you most to nurture your singing talent? That would be my parents, they did so much for me through out my career. Up until here, everything that I am, they helped me through. And I am very thankful for that. and for my family. Especially my mother. She’s been there for me always, and i can’t thank her enough.

When was your first performance as a singer? My first public performance would be, in Mathiveri,it was Eid Holidays, I went with my mom and there were huge celebrations for eid. I remember I cried the first time. It was a bit overwhelming, but I was fine after two three songs.

Apart from the singing competitions, did you get any opportunities during your school days, to develop your music talent? Yeah, I got lot of help from my school. my vocal teacher was Shafeeq Sir, I am sure almost everybody knows him.. He was really the one who helped me through all the complex hours of voice training, and it shows. I know it has helped me so much now. it really shows’.

How old were you then? I don’t actually remember, I think... May be I was in UKG.

Tell us a bit about your studies.. I studied in Male’, up until great 8 in Ameiniya school. after that i continued

30 VIBE | OCT 2013 www.vibetrends.com

my high school in Malaysia and now i am doing Audio Production. Thats... basically about hands on recording stuff. It has nothing to do with singing or vocals or any of that. Its about sound recording and managing sound for concerts and such music productions.

ap

How do you think its going to help you in the future? There are lots of job opportunities in Malaysia, but not as much in Male’, because we don’t really have that many shows here. But may be if i build my own studio someday, i will be able make better use of it. Having a job in Malaysia is also an option.

As a young Maldivian artist, do you think that there is a musical spirit that inspires you to look for a career in this industry? Yes of course. Because almost every artist is trying to promote original music. Like Unoosha for example, she is doing her original stuff and the also singing for bollywood. That’s a huge success. I believe there is future to build a career in this industry. People like her, they are making it work. So why not?

Raagu show on TVM would be the best exposure for you so far, how did get the opportunity to be featured on the show? I was invited by the producers, Fazeel, Zufar...they wanted to promote female artists. And i think that was a great platform for us as musicians, because there have not been many programs like that. And all the songs were recorded live, maybe when they show it on TV, people find it hard to believe, but we sang every song in one take, and that was it. It was a great program, i hope they continue it. Will you be doing that again? Yes of course. Its a very good program. Even other such Tv show, i will probably do it. Because its live, and its promoting our own original music.

Are we going to see more of you as a singer? Well, yeah.“Music is the only thing i can see myself doing,” if i am not doing this... Well probably going to do this for a long time.

What are your plans then, have you thought of a way to make money out of it? I think right now the best way for a musician to make money is resort music. Its a great field. But for me i think doing just that is not enough. You have to come with news stuffs, like coming up with albums.

S

ap

Music is like the only thing i can see myself doing...

Have you ever performed in a resort before? Yeah, i am already performing with an uncle, at taj exotica. But i am also looking for more places to perform. As a young female artist who is a musician and who travels often, i am not guessing it will be easy, but how good are you in managing your relationships? Relationships... Well i have a boy friend. (She smiles and leaves a statement). And he is more than just a boyfriend. He sings as well. So we are connected in a lot of ways. I could simply say he is my best friend. Does that bring more to your music? Yes of course. If i have to sing with someone else he would be my first choice. Because even

when singing he know what i am going to do next and its really comfortable.

What genre of music inspires you most? Acoustic. Even when you go on you tube, you can find acoustic versions of heavymetal or pop songs, and the acoustic version sounds so much better

Who do you listen to most? Jack Johnson He is just brilliant with guitar. I can listen to him all day. And i have been trying cover some of his work but its very difficult. If you are asked to give your best performance, what will you choose to sing? Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. She is also one of my biggest inspirations.

Love is blind . RELATION’S

By Riala

We often read about how falling in love results in increased heartbeats, sweaty palms, butterflies in stomachs and wobbly knees. It truly is a joy to your heart and soul. But there’s another organ that is much deeply affected that controls the rest: YOUR BRAIN

W

When you’re head over heels in love, it really alters the way you think. Research shows that being in love activates some parts of your brain while switching off others. Though it is not highly dangerous, it is vital to know what goes on in your body in this state of emotional turmoil. They don’t call it lovesick for nothing.

Symptoms: Often the first symptoms of being love-struck are not being able to eat, sleep or concentrate. These are direct results of too much dopamine and norepinephrine in your system. Dopamine is responsible for making you alert while increased amount of norepinephrine makes your heart beat faster pumping more oxygen into the brain, simultaneously releasing glucose stored in the body to the blood stream. These reactions in your body makes you want to think and be alert depriving you of sleep and hunger. It also makes you concentrate more on the source of your new found affection rather than daily activities or other ‘boring’ things you have been doing. With all the energy and time to think, the brain formulates plans to weave your dreams into a reality. But there’s one fact that you need to take into consideration. Love is indeed blind. Researchers have found from MRI scans that when in love, the frontal cortex (the area of the brain that is responsible for judgments) shuts down. So when we are in

32 VIBE | OCT 2013 www.vibetrends.com

. . or is it love with someone, we are less likely to be skeptical or critical of the one we love. This will greatly impact on the plan we make for future.

Addicted! Face it! Love is an addiction. And you are an Addict. The brain acts the same way with your passionate feelings of love as it does with other addictive drugs. The same system is activated that makes you feel happy to euphoric to craving more and more. Being in love is though, a better and a healthier choice of addiction because of the following benefits:

1. Start to relate and support When you have someone else to think about, your brain will automatically pick up the change and you will learn to help and support each other. Building trust in a relationship is crucial. And, your brain helps you out with that. A recent study linked people using first singular pronouns (like me, myself and I) to more likely being depressed than those who say “we” and “us”.

2. Get healthier and live longer Studies report that people in positive, healthy relationships are happier, wiser and have better mental health. This is most likely because of the higher levels of dopamine in their system.

3. Reduce the level of Stress As simple an act as holding hands with your loved is enough to lower your blood pressure and ease your physical pain. This is partly because when we feel affection for someone, it shuts the part of our brain that controls fear and negative emotions. This means you not only feel happy when you are in love, but you also feel safe around your loved one.

Enjoy Ginger

The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain. Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

Is your energy lagging? Though it may be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re tired, exercise -- even a brisk walk -- can be more effective than a nap or cup of coffee at fighting fatigue.

Sniff Rosemary

According to some research, catching a whiff of this aromatic herb may increase alertness and improve memory. To stay sharp, try smelling fresh rosemary or inhaling the scent of rosemary essential oil before a test or meeting.

Make Small Talk

Engaging in casual conversation with others may help keep you as sharp as doing a word puzzle, according to some studies. Just 10 minutes of daily chatter appears to improve mental function and preserve memory

Try Acupressure

Calm a queasy stomach with this quick acupressure trick: Use your index and middle fingers to press down on the groove between the tendons that run from the base of your palm to your wrist. Wristbands that apply pressure to this spot are available at drugstores and online.

Keep Capsaicin Cream on Hand

For sore muscles and joints, apply a cream or ointment that contains capsaicin, the active ingredient in chile peppers, two or three times a day. The heat from the peppers has been shown to help relieve pain.

MOTIVATION

H

Here are some concrete situations in which you can save money for the days when you wait for the next paycheck.

Have a Budget in Place Don’t wait for the salary to get credited for making your monthly savings and expenditure plan. You need to have a basic financial plan in place beforehand. This plan can be updated every two-to-three months. The basic idea here is to group the inescapable expenses, savings & investments and ensure there is something left for the financial contingencies. This helps to control overspending, a major reason to find your your bank balance below your expectations as the monthly end comes near.

Smart ways to cut corners Do you find yourself struggling to stretch your salary to the end of the month? Living from salary to salary can’t be much fun. But often it’s not the money we earn but rather how we handle it that makes all the difference.

38 VIBE | OCT 2013 www.vibetrends.com

Get Started with Paying Your Bills It is better to make the bigger, fixed payments. This refers to the installments you have to pay and bills on your phone, electricity and whatever else you know is critical to sustain your lifestyle.

Pay Yourself Yes, this might sound strange but you need to pay yourself from your own salary. This basically means following your budget outline or even if you don’t have one, setting aside an amount for your personal expenses. This includes your enjoyment, random shopping, fuel fill-ups and anything else that you plan to start/end during the course of the month.

More Tips to Manage Your Salary: Plan Long-term for Big Purchases try to avoid making big purchases in the form of impulse buys. Try to weaken impact of the bigger expense, by saving for it over a few, preceding months. Handling Bonus/Increments try to control your urge to splurge. Try to think of your bonus as your big opportunity to set up an emergency fund for yourself but do use a bit for relaxation too to ensure you enjoy your money too.

Create Piggy Bank Savings for Emergencies It is always a good idea to cheat yourself into saving a bit more than you desire. While insurance and investment are more like planned financial tools, you can create saving traps for yourself. For instance, use a piggy bank at your desk or within your room and any coinage in your pocket or every five/ten rufiyaa note you have has to go in this savings contraption. Over a period of three months, you would be surprised to find out how much this humble tool can save for you!

Doctor Sleep On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the King canon.

Maya’s Notebook Maya’s Notebook is a startling novel of suspense from New York Times bestselling author Isabel Allende. This contemporary coming-of-age story centers upon Maya Vidal, a remarkable teenager abandoned by her parents. Maya grew up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandmother Nini, whose formidable strength helped her build a new life after emigrating from Chile in 1973 with a young son, and her grandfather Popo, a gentle African-American astronomer. When Popo dies, Maya goes off the rails. Along with a circle of girlfriends known as “the vampires,” she turns to drugs, alcohol, and petty crime--a downward spiral that eventually leads to Las Vegas and a dangerous underworld, with Maya caught between warring forces: a gang of assassins, the police, the FBI, and Interpol. Her one chance for survival is Nini, who helps her escape to a remote island off the coast of Chile. In the care of her grandmother’s old friend, Manuel Arias, and surrounded by strange new acquaintances, Maya begins to record her story in her notebook, as she tries to make sense of her past and unravel the mysteries of her family and her own life.

5 ways to

be fit in fitness Life is busy…very busy…and it is not always easy to get in those regular workouts. Yet, we know that exercise provides boundless benefits like improving bone health, enhancing strength, boosting immunity, and reducing stress.

Life is busy…very busy…and it is not always easy to get in those regular workouts. Yet, we know that exercise provides boundless benefits like improving bone health, enhancing strength, boosting immunity, and reducing stress. Achieving and maintaining optimal fitness is a process that requires continual assessment, monitoring, and progression. Because consistency is the number one most critical factor, here are five ways to help you squeeze your workouts in:

Schedule fit

.1

Whether you are CEO of a business, your family, or just your world, sticking to a schedule keeps everything in order and helps you accomplish all the necessary tasks and goals. Make your workouts a priority and program them in at least five days a week. Enter them into your calendar (manually or electronically) in advance so they are a mandatory, inflexible part of your day. Schedule all of your meetings, errands, appointments, and duties around your workouts. Consider it your most critical appointment and it will help you be more efficient at everything else, provide energy to carry you through your days, and clear up your mind so there is space for thinking and performing optimally.

48 VIBE | OCT 2013 www.vibetrends.com

Entice fit

Socialize fit

.2

Schedule meetings and get-togethers with friends and colleagues on a weekend trip, walking path, or at a gym. Many successful business deals, enhanced friendships, and creative endeavors have come together in bonding environments such as these. Start out a lunch date at a fun class together, like hip hop, power yoga, or circuit training, and then continue your date for a post-workout recovery meal (You can even try couples yoga!). You will effectively strengthen your body and your social life at the same time.

.3

Is there a decadent book you’re eager to dive into? A guilty mind-candy type of TV series you long to indulge in? A classic film you’ve always wanted to watch? Collect your choice of these options and watch or read ONLY while you’re exercising. Set up a workout arrangement that enables you to do so. For example, put a piece of exercise equipment (stationary bike, mini trampoline, dumbbells, etc.) in front of the TV and save the TV episode(s) or film to watch during exercise. Or plunge into that juicy book while doing cardio on a machine. These rewards will help you look forward to your workouts.

Multitask fit

.4

With modern technology, it is easy to get on a machine and sweat while responding to emails, making phone calls (if you are not the one doing too much huh-huh-huh talking), reading articles or documents, and even writing papers. Have you seen engineering’s attempt to make desks out of treadmills? Other ways to multitask include: • Sitting on a big exercise ball at your desk instead of a chair. For extra credit, you can sneak in a set of crunches, wall squats, and pushups throughout the day. • Take your kids to the park to play along with resistance tubing and a jump rope. You can give your kid a push on the swing, watch them play, and workout altogether. • While speaking on the phone or brushing your teeth, do plies, squats, calf raises, step-ups, and leg swings.

5 Reward fit Plan rewards to keep your motivation strong. Although your body and mind will naturally feel stronger and you’ll most likely notice an improvement in your fitness level, stress, emotional state, and energy, you can tack on additional bonuses once you reach set goals. Great, inspiring gifts to give yourself include a new exercise toy (a foam roller, kettle bell, or Swiss ball), workout clothes, a new song to move to, or a fitness DVD. It doesn’t have to be a bought reward…simply tune into your body and notice the built-in benefits. Document your success in a journal or schedule a race (a 5K, 10K, or even a marathon or triathlon) to boost your motivation.

It used to be that ending a relationship was between two people, and two people alone; now there are the opinions of others to consider, as well as the post-break-up feelings of your ex when he reads about what you’re doing online... and it’s all down to wretched social media. A particular debt of “gratitude” is owed, of course, to Facebook.

As a result, having a “social media cleanse” when a relationship crumbles into dust is increasingly common, with 42 per cent of people ‘unfriending’ their ex on Facebook or unfollowing them on Twitter before they’ve been broken up for a month, and 34 per cent deleting all online images of their former love, according to research. Furthermore, almost a third (31 per cent) would extend the cull and remove all

60 VIBE | OCT 2013 www.vibetrends.com

Dramatically, one in three (34 per cent) of 18 to 34-year-olds consider it acceptable for break-up cleanses to also involve deleting all photographs which feature their ex-partner; effectively removing the relationship’s digital footprint and rewriting their personal social media history. The survey of over 2,000 British people makes up part of Diffusion’s UK Social-ology Study 2013 into on how our personal lives are played out in our social media activity. The research also revealed that social media is a stage upon which the brokenhearten can publicly announce that they have moved on. Two in three (65 per cent) deem it acceptable to flaunt their new unattached status by changing their Facebook profile to ‘single’ within the first month of a break-up, while one in five (18 per cent) would happily change their Facebook status to ‘in a relationship’ with someone new within the first month. Similarly, nearly a third (30 per cent) say

that it’s okay to upload and tag pictures with a new love interest within the first month of a break-up. But this pubic display of moving on goes both ways: nearly a fifth (17 per cent) think it’s acceptable to ‘stalk’ an ex-partner’s social media channels for evidence they are with someone new. Psychologist and behavioural expert, Professor Craig Jackson, of Birmingham City University said the findings confirm what many psychologists have suspected about those who have grown up surrounded by social media. “They fall in ‘digital love’ quickly (that is, to provide online confirmation and validation of a new relationship) but are just as capable of falling out of it quickly too, and with some clinical precision. “When new romances form, the digital confirmation (e.g. Facebook status) is often viewed as THE confirmation of the new relationship that makes it both real and public. “It makes sense then that this method is also used as a decisive means of confirming to the world the end of a romance.”
