Essex County Vaccine Site Receive
TASTY APPRECIATION
By Jackie Schatell
B
orn and raised in Livingston, Stu Slotnick and Livingston resident Liby Saigal are making a huge difference to the staff and volunteers at the five vaccine centers servicing Essex County. “These staff members and volunteers work tirelessly, seven-days-a week, sometimes putting in 12-hour shifts, to ensure that as many people as possible get vaccinated,” says Stu. To show appreciation from the community, Stu has been coordinating with local restaurants, residents, businesses, religious centers and more that send over meals to the five sites, ensuring that everything goes smoothly. He says that sometimes, restaurants where orders are placed, throw in extras, on the house. “The rewards are two-fold,” says Stu. “The volunteers feel appreciated, and we are helping to keep local restaurants afloat because they are still struggling.” “Everyone has been so generous, and we can’t thank people enough for being so selfless,” says Stu, who gives up overtime at his job to volunteer. Liby’s efforts include purchasing meals with the money donated to her non-profit called LTownCares. She says that in just 8 weeks, she raised over $10,000. Liby coordinates with Stu to see when meals are expected and fills the gaps by using money she collected to send over food.
(Left-Right) Lauren Goren, Stu Slotnick, Nora Vickerman, Livingston Town Councilman Al Anthony, Sam Patel, and Sheriff Officer Eric Monjito pose at the Sears Vaccine site with some donated meals. She has also made the rounds to all five of the locations and says she is “touched by how thankful all of the people she coordinates with are.” And the site staff and volunteers are not all the two help. They employ a zerowaste philosophy where 3 days a week, anything leftover is taken by Livingston resident Nick Santinelli to the homeless in Newark and the other 2 days, the leftovers are donated to Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair. “We want to support the people at the vaccine sites for giving back, but we know that the homeless are also being severely affected by the pandemic, so we are thrilled to be able to support them as well,” says Liby.
Both Stu and Liby post photos of the food spreads on their Facebook pages to give thanks. “Sharing these photos and stories on Facebook allows us to publicly thank the participating restaurants as well as donors and show them how much their endeavors are being enjoyed,” says Liby. “Many of those donating, tell me that they like seeing where their donations are going.” “It takes a village, and we are thankful to all who donate, and to all who volunteer,” says Stu. “It has been a great experience and we plan to keep this up until everyone who wants to, is vaccinated. There is no better feeling than giving back to the community.”

Books Over 30,000 Vaccine Appointments for Those Needing Help the Most By Jackie Schatell
H
elping others is not new to NJ native Amy Heller, who founded WGIRLS INC 12 years ago with a mission to empower women and children in underserved communities through fundraising, volunteerism, and outreach. When the pandemic hit, Amy pivoted her non-profit so she and her team of over 500 volunteers could help people needing assistance secure COVID-19 vaccine appointments. In seven weeks, the team, which offers aid in 16 languages, had already secured over 20,000 appointments. The army of volunteers at WGIRLS work round the clock in all NJ counties including Morris and Essex, and some NY counties, to book vaccine appointments for those needing help because according to Amy, “many appointments drop at night and in the early morning hours.” The process to gain assistance is easy. Those needing an appointment simply fill in a form on the WGIRLS.ORG website and are then paired with a volunteer. The volunteer reaches out via cell or email to find out the client’s availability for an appointment as well as their preferred vaccine locations. Next, the volunteer gets to work securing an appointment, which generally happens pretty quickly because the WGIRLS volunteers “know the ins and outs of navigating the vaccine scheduling systems.” In fact, the volunteers “often share tips with one another on a private Facebook page, as well as heartfelt stories about those they have helped.”
“Heritage Auctions was the perfect fit. All of the specialists were so knowledgeable and took the time to highlight each item in the manner it deserved.” N.T. | Florida
Amy Heller When the pandemic first hit, WGIRLS raised over $25,000 to provide much-needed PPE for frontline workers at Overlook Medical Center. Then, after Amy’s neighbor, who is in her 80s, casually mentioned she was having trouble booking an appointment, Amy realized that other seniors and those with other barriers also needed help. So, she created her own system and quickly rolled it out across the state. The founder of WGIRLS, who “plans to help until everyone who wants a shot can get one” says, “to play a role in reducing the fear and anxiety this pandemic has caused for so many is truly gratifying.”

Healthy AND Delicious TS Ma is the Chinese restaurant you always wanted to visit. The very different spin on both traditional Chinese dishes and their own creations you find here revolves around two words: healthy and delicious. At TS Ma, the dishes are created using only very fresh and high quality ingredients; you’ll never find a gloppy sauce thickened with cornstarch. The Szechuan Pork Wontons are a must order. Pork and vegetables enveloped in a wheat flour wrapper served in a ginger, garlic, scallion spicy brown sauce. The combination of ingredients in the Wonton and the sauce create a multi-layered flavor sensation that is simply not to be missed. Owner Thomas Ma points out that TS Ma offers many Gluten Free options, and is very happy to accommodate special diet requirements. Please note that at this time it’s takeout or delivery only. Enjoy that convenience!

Essex County Clerk
CHRISTOPHER J. DURKIN By Jackie Schatell
W
e know there are many departments in Essex County government, but not everyone knows what happens in each one. This month, Suburban Essex Magazine is introducing a new column that will serve to educate the public on these departments and introduce the people holding the positions. This month, we talked to Essex County Clerk, Christopher J. Durkin, to learn about his role serving the people of Essex County.
A: I was elected to the position of Essex County Clerk in November of 2005 and was sworn into office on January 1, 2006.
A: I am an elected official who is responsible for overseeing various aspects of elections including results, petitions, mail-in votes, voter registration and lists. I also oversee applications for Essex County resident IDs, senior citizen courtesy IDs, youth resident IDs; new, renewal and rush U.S. passport applications; and filings for business trade names, inheritance tax waivers, liens and judgments, religious corporations, trade name searches and more. In addition, I oversee the swearing in of notary publics, issue physician licenses and veteran peddler licenses, and perform ceremonies for civil unions, weddings, and oaths of office.
Q: Why is your job important? A: The County Clerk is a constitutional office along with the office of Sheriff, Prosecutor, and Surrogate. It is important to have a County Clerk because it allows for one central place for the processing of important county documents. We keep current and historical county records, collect fees, and ensure

Q: What do you do as the County Clerk?
20
• Generated $1.25 million through the processing of U.S. passports, county identification cards, and business trade names, as well as through the swearing in of notary publics.
• Accepted 54,645 U.S. Passport Applications.
Q: How long have you held this office?
Christopher Durkin and 2019 Essex County Poster winner, Yolianis Espada
that everything runs smoothly. For instance, since 2015, I have visited 103 Essex County schools, and we have:
• Judged 3,089 posters by Essex County 4th grade students that have been entered in the “My Essex County” Poster Contest. • Performed 1,258 wedding ceremonies. • Processed 58 physician licenses filings.
Q: What is the most exciting part of managing many aspects of the election process? A: The election process has been changing greatly, especially over the last three years, through laws passed by the New Jersey legislature. There has been an expansion in rights to vote by mail. Essex County has installed 25 secure ballot drop boxes for voters to utilize to return their ballots. Online voter registration is now available where people can update their registration 24 hours a day. Citizens currently on probation or parole can now register to vote. Candidates over the last year have had the ability to garner signatures electronically for their petitions. We should encourage more voices to be heard in our electoral process. I feel that there is a direct correlation between civic engagement and the health of a community.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: I love interacting with the public and serving the needs of the people of Essex County. I enjoy talking with them and learning about them. Performing weddings and civil unions is great because I get to hear about couples’ love stories. I feel honored to be included in their special days. In addition, being part of the election process is very special to me because I come from a family of public servants and have been around elections for my whole life. I feel very fortunate to be so engaged in this field. I feel voting is our greatest right, so it is a dream come true to be engaged in the election process. I also love running the “My Essex County Poster Contest,” for 4th graders. It not only allows them to express their creativity, participating helps them to become more aware of and take ownership of their community. I am a former teacher, so it is always fun to speak with them and teach them about Essex County.
Q: What do you think people would be surprised to learn about the County Clerk Department? A: The first Essex County Clerk, Robert Ogden, was elected in 1765, before our Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Also, to accept U.S. Passport applications, the County Clerk’s office must be approved by the U.S. Department of State. The office is inspected by the State Department on a regular basis and is required to meet certain standards and criteria. Those individuals accepting applications must take a test annually and pass with a score of 90 or above. They are then issued a certification from the State Department. The Clerk’s office currently has 15 employees certified to accept applications, which is more than any other County Clerk’s office in the state.

Innovative Higher-Ed Options Berkeley College Offers Multiple Paths for Students By Janis Hashe
E
ver heard of “stackable credentials?” Berkeley College, with campuses in Newark, Paramus, Woodbridge and Woodland Park, NJ, Midtown Manhattan and White Plains, NY, offers this innovative option, giving students a cost-effective option to prepare for careers in a specific area. Students who complete a certificate program at Berkeley College may be able to apply the credits they earn from the stackable credential to a corresponding undergraduate degree at the college. “Making little steps towards a final goal, and a smaller commitment of time and cost are the big advantages of stackable credentials,” said Marianne Vakalis, EdD, Dean of Professional Studies. “Micro- and stackable credentials are highly effective tools to motivate learners to continue their academic learning and
professional growth,” said Eva Skuka, MD, Associate Provost, and Dean, School of Health Studies. “Continuing and professional education offerings are ideal for individuals in career transitions, those re-entering the workforce, those who want to learn a new skill, as well as those who want to maintain competency in their field,” said Skuka. Founded in 1931, Berkeley College is a career-focused institution offering Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Associate’s degree and Certificate programs in more than 20 career fields. Certificate programs are offered in Law Enforcement and Public
Safety; Legal and Compliance; Social Justice and Welfare; and Interior Design, Game Design, and Graphic Design. Healthcare continuing education programs include EKG Technician Training and Medical Scribe. Berkeley College in New Jersey offers many certificate programs online to accommodate students’ busy lives and scheduling needs.

tudents at Mount St. Dominic Academy are educated to be socially responsible and globally aware leaders of tomorrow. Dovetailing perfectly into the Academy’s mission is the L.E.O. Program. The acronym stands for Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity and is sponsored by The Leonidas Foundation. The L.E.O. Program is an intensive twoyear exploration of creating a business or product from idea to launch. Acceptance into the program, open to juniors and seniors, is based on a comprehensive application process. Christine Victori completed special training to be a L.E.O. instructor. “L.E.O. empowers our young women to develop the skills and confidence to question the status quo, and to help them become future business leaders,” she says. The program combines classroom instruction, projects and the opportunity to meet with entrepreneurs and executives. The students have learned to market businesses with support from the Academy’s alumnae. The y have included apps to teach teens about budgeting and a company that creates and delivers affordable charcuterie boards. wVictori enjoys watching the girls make connections between the businesses they have developed
and how they fit into the real world. “You can see the excitement when they realize what they’re doing is viable, valuable and sellable,” she says. Victori credits The Leonidas Foundation for providing resources and insight. Mount St. Dominic Academy, with a student enrollment of 250, is the first private girls high school to offer L.E.O. In June the students will attend a Summer Leadership Conference at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC to exchange ideas and further hone their skills.

Since 1896, the Sanford family has been providing trusted insurance advice.
What is the first question you might ask someone seeking advice on a potential divorce? One of the first questions I would ask a potential divorce client is what their biggest concern or worry is about the concept of divorce so that I could immediately address that to make them feel more comfortable.
Working with me and Fox Rothschild provides clients the resources to have all their legal needs met in one place. It is not uncommon for a divorce client to have issues related to a corporate structure, an estate plan, planning for a special needs child, tax issues, etc. As we are a full-service, national law firm, I have the resources at my fingertips to get the client the right answers quickly, rather than having to find different outside counsel to assist.
How can your firm help clients with the financial aspects of divorce such as alimony, child support, and the division of property and assets? George Foster Sanford III
I have the depth and breadth of legal experience, specializing in family law my entire career, to guide clients through the current and developing laws surrounding alimony, child support, and the division of property, assets, and debt.
What sets your services apart from other attorneys in your field? Bruce Ruger Sanford
Working with me, clients receive personalized attention with the resources of a large multi-practice law firm to support me. I provide clients with effective strategies, innovative solutions, and compassionate counsel.

Parents' feelings about their own life without their child's daily presence and parenting responsibilities are often met with a mix of emotions as well. Many parents look forward to this point in their lives and the freedom they haven't enjoyed in nearly two decades. Some parents may even feel conflicted or guilty for looking forward to 'me' time. At the same time, many parents (even those same parents) feel a sense of loss. After all, they've devoted 18 years to caregiving and raising their child. Many parents lose their sense of self while raising a family. In fact, being a parent can become one's identity. As a result, parents may feel an even more significant loss when their kid heads away to college. So how do you survive this transition? Learn to embrace it.
A Heart-to-Heart Write a letter or talk to your adolescent when you see him or her off to college. A letter is best because your kid can save it and reread it to absorb and ponder what you have to say. Offer wisdom about life and your appreciation for your adolescent's admirable characteristics.

Pizza at Bivio is a Special Experience Chef/owner Tomasso Colao starts with imported flour and foregoes store-bought stuff for a special yeast that he’s been feeding for over 25 years. He uses hand-crushed San Marzano tomatoes, fresh basil, fresh garlic, and Buffalo Mozzarella imported by him from Salerno. The imported ingredients along with the special care he affords each pie yields something remarkable and worth the trip from almost anywhere. This restaurant is tiny and from every table you have the wonderful feeling as if you’re right in the kitchen with the chef. Colao insists that the pies should be eaten right out of the oven, so there is no takeout or delivery. He and his wife Jackie are very attentive to Covid restrictions and your safety, so seating is limited and you’ll need to make reservations on their website. The charm of this little restaurant, and the really noteworthy pizza will have you online making your next reservation even before your meal is finished. BYO.

gypt boasts a 5,000-year-old history of dance. While times certainly have changed, Egyptian dance traditions are some of the most vibrant in the Middle East. Mosaic: A World in Motion takes a closer look at some of those folkloric styles that hold a prominent place in Mosaic Dance Theater Company’s repertory, with history, descriptions, and engaging performances of the dances themselves from Mosaic’s performance archives. “Egyptian Dances” takes you down the Nile with background on Egypt’s rich folkloric dance traditions and engaging performance from Mosaic’s performance archives. Made possible by funds from the Essex County Division of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Pre-recorded, and livestreamed on YouTubeLive. GREENWOOD GARDENS A Unique Combination of Nature, Horticulture, Arts & Crafts Garden Follies and Antique Ornaments
G
reenwood Gardens offers a sensorial walk through the flora, fauna, fountains, Arts and Crafts follies, and antique garden ornaments from a time gone by. Just in time for Mother’s Day and the blossoms of spring, this 28-acre historic former private estate is opening its gates for the 2021 season. Visitors feel the effect of the timelessness of Greenwood as soon as they drive through the Main gates where a graceful London plane allée lines the entrance drive, creating a sense of peace and order. Springtime at Greenwood Gardens is an exciting time of the year when the season begins to reveal a changing plant palette including billowing clouds of pink and white cherry blossoms, flowering dogwoods and tulip trees, yellow daffodils, red azaleas, purple rhododendrons, and blankets of white flowers. The garden encourages repeat visitation to view the unfolding of the season and the newest collections which have been expanding over time. Winding paths lined with stone figures and boxwood, graceful staircases entering and exiting the Teahouse, terraced gardens, woodlands, grottoes, fountains, Arts and Crafts follies, and intricate iron gates, along with other original structures, contribute to Greenwood Gardens’ unique hardscape, as does the careful layout and planning of the plantings.

GREENWOOD GARDENS
continued from previous page
The first stop on the self-guided tour is the 1925 and 1926 Cottages, Tennis Pavilion, and First Tee—all storied landmarks in Greenwood’s history. The tour continues past the 1950 Main House to the Main Terrace, with its grand view of the entire renovated Main Axis, the core portion of the historic garden, featuring fountains, horticultural delights and antique urns and sculptures. Visitors then step down a gracious staircase to the Reflecting Pool Terrace with its D-shaped pool where the original lead dolphins delightfully spout water. Surrounding the pool is a mix of perennial and annual flower garden classics which are expected to reveal themselves in rich hues of yellow, blue, and purple. Poppies, peonies, iris, and digitalis complement the masonry walls and the nearby Rookwood ceramics. The area is accentuated with dwarf conifers, yucca, antique ceramic urns, and putti.
The next staircase leads to the Croquet Lawn, where crisp taxus hedges and teak benches in each corner offer ample opportunity to linger and take in the flowering dogwoods, eastern redbuds, a paperbark maple, and a Persian ironwood. Spring and late summer are anticipated to be well represented here with roses, asters, gentian ‘True Blue,’ and reblooming weigela. One more elegant staircase provides a transition to the final Main Axis tier: the Garden of the Gods. This magical and dramatic woodland scene with elegant antique trellises surrounds a circular pool Photo by Abby O’Neill and fountain. A sense of cultivated wildness with newly planted pink and white azaleas for spring and dwarf abelia for summer will provide a counterpoint to the formality of this area, yet will still be in keeping with the intended symmetry. Beyond the Main Axis, stops on the tour include the iconic garden follies—the Teahouse and Summerhouse—both constructed in the late 1920s and which harken back to a quieter, slow-paced era. Comfortable benches overlooking the bucolic twin ponds at the eastern edge of the property offer a relaxing way to linger and take in the vista. Greenwood Gardens will be open to the public Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May 1 through November 7 between 10am and 5pm. Advance timed ticket registration only. Tours are self-guided.

SUMMER CAMP TIPS From the Camps Directors Themselves!
“Theatre Camp provides kids with skills that they can use in the future in all aspects of their life. A class on how to audition not only helps to prepare students for a professional audition but also trains them how to best present themselves in an interview or when delivering a speech. Comedy/ Improvisation classes help develop quick thinking skills. Theatre for Life is our motto, because we truly believe that musical theatre training can not only enhance, but change the course of someone’s life.” —Randy Elman, Artist Director, Musical Theatre Conservatory
“If you come with a friend, open yourselves up to those who did not. If you come alone, see the camp as a cold pool… Just jump in; it will feel warmer as you adjust to it!” —John Garzon, Surf and Turf Adventures
“Performing Arts camps/programs encourage students and counselors to express themselves creatively. Nurturing the creative possibilities within children through their participation in dance, music, art, and drama can bolster self-esteem and self-confidence. Having the opportunity to experience the arts truly matters… and it’s fun!” —Sharron Miller, Founder/Director, Prime Time Summer Arts, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts

“What better way to give children the opportunity to use and build their skills in all areas than a summer camp, rich with natural and facilitated intervention and reinforcement? Children who attend not only love the magical feeling of belonging to a group, having real friendships and being the ‘mainstream’ but they are relaxed, accepted and embraced by a dedicated team of professionals. Our anxiety-free climate leads to improved learning in all aspects of children’s’ development with parents and educators observing noticeable differences!” —Ryan Cox, Assistant Director, Harbor Haven Summer Program

Full Day On-Campus Pre-K Open for Enrollment at Oak Knoll School
O
ak Knoll School of the Holy Child in Summit, New Jersey, is now enrolling for its full-day on-campus pre-K program for the fall of 2021.
The Little Acorns Pre-K @ Oak Knoll engages students to spark their creativity and critical thinking, while fostering the development of their independence and self-esteem. “In the tradition of Holy Child founder Cornelia Connelly, the program encourages independent learning, exploration and self-discovery in an environment of acceptance and trust,” said Oak Knoll Head of School Timothy J. Saburn. “Working side by side, children will learn to respect and appreciate themselves, one another and the world around them." With a curriculum designed to address the unique learning abilities of each child, students will enjoy guided and self-directed learning in literacy, math, culture studies, science and religion.
Independent studies will be facilitated by weekly visits to the library, allowing students to select books on subjects of their own interest, in addition to those connected to the Acorns curriculum. The single-section program, which includes before- and after-care options, is designed for potty-trained children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2021. Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child is an independent, Catholic school, coeducational in elementary school from pre-kindergarten through grade six; and all-girls in middle and high school from grades seven through 12.
Specialty classes augment the curriculum, providing additional learning opportunities in music, drama, art, physical education, world languages, movement and technology.

Expert Tips for
Welcoming a Kitten
F
ostering kittens and cats has risen in popularity during these unprecedented times, and many pet lovers are becoming fosters to help overcrowded animal shelters. Fostering a kitten can be a fun and exciting time, but it may also come with a learning curve.
WHEN IT’S NOT OVER EASY
Divorce is rarely easy. You want a lawyer with experience in complex cases who can guide you and your family to the next chapter. Eric S. Solotoff Co-Chair – Family Law 973.994.7501 esolotoff@foxrothschild.com
Among the 43% of respondents to a Royal Canin survey, who have fostered a pet, 6 in 10 have “foster failed” and permanently adopted the pet they were fostering. Most pet owners who responded also agree the first year of pet ownership is the most important, but 64% believe it is the most difficult, as well. Whether you’re fostering or adopting a kitten, learn how to give your kitten proper care during her first weeks and months with you with this advice from the experts at Royal Canin.
Arriving Home The new sights, sounds and smells in your home, and the separation from her mother, may make your kitten feel stressed. Keeping the environment calm and quiet can ease the transition. When you arrive home, put the cat carrier in the room you’ve prepared for the kitten with the kitten still inside, allowing her to get acclimated before opening the door. Then allow the kitten to explore a closed-off area. Resist the urge to cuddle your kitten right away.
Certified by the NJ Supreme Court Matrimonial Law Attorney
As your kitten gains confidence in its new surroundings, she will want to explore more. Make sure the environment is prepared with electrical wires and outlets covered; windows, balconies and stairs secured; and small or sharp objects put away so she can safely explore with your supervision. If there are possible hazards, a designated room with windows and plenty of social contact for the first few weeks may be better.

establish sleep patterns, but on the first night you might want to leave a night light on to help with the adjustment.
Easy, Breezy, SPRING CLEANING
Provide somewhere quiet to eat. This should be somewhere your kitten feels secure, away from where you and any other pets eat. Cats don’t like to eat too near their litter boxes and should always have fresh water available. As kittens grow rapidly, their digestive and immune systems develop slowly and they have specific nutritional needs that are different from adult cats. Any sudden changes in your kitten’s diet can cause digestive trouble, so for the first few days, keep the same feeding routine as the previous caretaker. You can slowly switch to a different routine, if you choose, and transition to kitten food suitable for the appropriate growth stage. For example, Royal Canin Kitten formulas are tailor-made with optimal vitamins and minerals to support healthy development.

Ongoing Care Your kitten should see a veterinarian as soon as possible. In addition to a general health check, your vet can help you create a vaccination schedule and give advice on deworming, nutrition and more. Always use a carrier to transport your kitten safely while in the car and into the vet’s office. Gradually introducing your kitten to new experiences can help with socialization. New sounds can startle a kitten, so be ready to offer plenty of reassurance. You may also need to introduce new terrain like stairs or unfamiliar surfaces. Gentle play and careful handling can help your kitten become more comfortable with being touched.

SHOW YOUR

H
“
ow you present yourself online is critical, especially in these days of the pandemic,” says photographer Dan Epstein. Whether it’s a business website, online meeting, or presence in social media marketing, most people agree that a first impression is key. “No kidding”, he adds, “you get, like, two seconds to capture someone’s attention before you lose them to a click through. The photograph of you simply has to be engaging, and able to show the best part of you.” With over three decades of experience shooting for some of America’s biggest magazines, Fortune 500 companies, as well as many local small businesses, Epstein can do just that: take a
photograph that presents you or your business in your best light. Whether you call it a business portrait, or a headshot, after a scheduled telephone or FaceTime meeting, he will come to your location, or someplace else you choose, with the appropriate photo gear and COVID safety measures, and make a series of photographs to make sure that you have a selection of excellent alternatives to choose from. Many clients are so pleased
with the results that they choose multiple different portraits for their marketing and social media efforts. You can preview a selection of his work on his website and reach him through it as well. Go ahead, contact him, it’s time to put your best face forward.

Whether updating an entire room or purchasing a new rug, Bedrosian offers a large inventory of styles and colors to make the rug a focal point. The company specializes in modern, traditional and classic hand-woven area rugs, runners, and wall-towall carpeting.
Mark and Craig Bedrosian
Bedrosian has built a solid reputation for the design, manufacturing and sale of rugs. “We have a full inventory of antique and vintage rugs,” says Mark Bedrosian, a third-generation owner of the business established by his grandfather in 1924. “We also have traditional, modern, and transitional styles in current color palates.” Trending now are vibrant shades of blue and grey, however, Bedrosian notes that the colors can be bold or muted. The business has three on-staff designers, and a host of freelance artisans, to create its vast inventory of handcrafted, luxury rugs. Most of the rugs are wool with some of the more modern styles are both wool and silk. The rugs are handcrafted and imported from all over the world, mostly from the regions of India, Pakistan and Nepal.
“Our client base consists of design enthusiasts, interior designers and architects,” says Bedrosian. Some have relocated out of state for business or retirement. Given the company’s renowned reputation, it is common for Bedrosian to take to the road to personally deliver a rug to a client. International deliveries can be arranged as well. Bedrosian Luxury Rugs has an online following on Instagram and Facebook, where clients are invited to follow the company @MChristopherCollection to receive exclusive offers.

Cipriano Law Offices Offers Personal Attention with Proven Results By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein
A
s an attorney specializing in family law, Melissa Cipriano deals with issues ranging from unwinding family businesses when the principals get divorced through traditional child support and custody cases. She is not only a qualified economic and domestic violence mediator, but also a parenting coordinator and a seasoned litigator. The staff handles a wide range of marital and family issues, including divorce and mediation, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and municipal court violations. The firm offers mediation services for less contentious matters as it can be substantially less expensive than attorneys’ fees. Clients have
selected Cipriano as their mediator because she has an MBA as well as a law degree. This means that she really understands their business and financial dealings. That understanding is a key to the success of Cipriano Law Offices. Cipriano says, “I’m a single mom with two children. Some of our staff are married, some are divorced. We’ve been through the process of divorce ourselves, so we really understand how stressful and scary it can be.”

GIVE BLOOD and Make It a Summer Full of Life American Red Cross Seeks Donors
T
his spring as COVID-19 vaccines become more available and people resume some of their favorite activities, the American Red Cross is reminding the public that the need for blood remains. Healthy individuals are encouraged to make a blood donation appointment now. But what about those who’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine— can they donate? The answer is yes, as long as donors are symptom-free, feeling well and can provide the vaccine manufacturer’s name—and their is no waiting period required. • Donors, especially those with type O blood, are needed in May to help ensure blood products are available for patients now and into summer. • Those who give blood, platelets or plasma during the May drive will be automatically entered for chance to win a travel trailer camper that sleeps five, powered by Suburban Propane, and will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, courtesy of Suburban Propane.* *Restrictions apply. Donations must be made between May1-15. Additional information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/ SummerFullOfLife.
Health Insights for Donors
The Red Cross is testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Testing may also identify the presence of antibodies developed after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.
Plasma from routine blood and platelet donations that test positive for high levels of antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma to meet potential future needs of COVID-19 patients. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood product collected from COVID-19 survivors who have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus. The Red Cross is also screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait.. Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease. Donors can expect to receive antibody test and sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks.
Locations: • American Red Cross Blood Donation Center, 209 Fairfield Road, Fairfield Tuesdays: 12:30-7:30pm Saturdays: 7am-2pm • First Baptist Church of Caldwell, 259 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell 5/15/2021: 10am-3pm • YMCA of Montclair, 25 Park Street, Montclair 5/9/2021: 10am-3pm • Central Presbyterian Church, 46 Park Street, Montclair 5/13/2021: 1:30-6:30pm • The Life Christian Church, 747 Northfield Avenue, West Orange 5/14/2021: 2-7pm

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. Body Beautiful
Through Cosmetic Dermatology By Christine Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
D
id you know that the skin is the largest organ of our body? Various services to maintain the health and appearance of this vital organ are offered at Natural Image Skin Center, LLC in Livingston. Today’s technology has enhanced some of the newer procedures of cosmetic dermatology, such as body contouring. Dr. Nicole Rocca and Dr. Stephen Nervi head this group, along with two Physician Assistants and an aesthetician who work with patients and utilize three procedures to improve a specific body area.
The most popular procedure is Coolsculpting®. This service targets specific areas of fat, such as love handles or excess abdominal fat. Though clients cannot expect to lose weight, they may find that they have gone down a size in clothing. Typically, clients see good results after two sessions. The results are intended to last indefinitely, with targeted fat cells destroyed, but clients should maintain an ideal weight to reap maximum benefits. While Coolsculpting® reduces body fat, the second service, Emsculpt®, builds muscle by stimulating electromagnetic energy to increase muscle tone. Popular targeted areas include the abdomen and buttocks. With this service, customers usually require four to six sessions to achieve the desired look.
(Left-right) Lindsay Alvarado, Medical Aesthetician and Cristin Kelly, PA-C. Exilis Ultra® is a procedure that uses ultrasound and radiofrequency for skin tightening. This service is very effective for sagging skin in the chin, face, eyes, or abdomen. Maximum results usually occur in four or five sessions. A very comfortable procedure—similar to a hot stone massage—Exilis Ultra® is often used to complement Coolsculpting® to tighten sagging skin. In summarizing their successful practice, Dr. Rocca states, “We proudly offer minimally invasive and effective body-contouring technologies. We are able to debulk, tone, and tighten target areas of the body which are resistant to diet and exercise.”

Drink Your Veggies Chef V Blends Seven Super Greens That Will Satisfy Your Palate By Cynthia Burns
I
n 2010 Veronica Wheat, a.k.a. Chef V, was a private chef in the San Diego area. As a perk for clients, she included her trademark Green Drink—seven super greens with a hint of apple—with her meals. The Green Drink received an enthusiastic response from her clients, and a year later, the Veronica Wheat entrepreneur revamped to focus solely on the beverage. Now, Chef V’s distribution area is spread over more than two dozen states. The nutritional therapist says, “Consuming Green Drink before each meal makes it easier to get a daily dose of antioxidant-rich green leafy vegetables.” Wheat chose the seven greens for their ability to fight inflammation, reduce cholesterol and remove toxins from the liver. “There are no preservatives. It’s a cold-blended drink, not juiced, so the natural nutrients and fiber are not wasted.” She is humbled by messages customers send relating health affirming outcomes after incorporating Green Drink into their daily intake. Green Drinks are made to order. Chef V also offers a cleanse package and a 21-day detoxification program.

Dental Implants Are Changing the Way People Live!
T
he major considerations of choosing dental implants over dentures and bridges are comfort and permanency. Many people do not wear dentures or bridges well. Often, dentures and bridges fit poorly and break. Further, dentures and bridges must be removed from the mouth for cleaning and at bedtime. In most cases, Dr. Gianella will recommend dental implants to patients as the appropriate cosmetic Dr. Gianella procedure. Dental implants last for many years. Occasionally, the teeth may need to be restored, but the procedure is a simple above-the-gum process for the fitting of the new tooth and is non-invasive with only measurements and impressions necessary to make a new tooth. With dental implants, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life.

Get Back on Your Feet By Cynthia Burns
I
“
mmobilizing the foot may be the best course of action to alleviate pain, but it is not always practical,” says Matthew Wachtler, DPM of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists. His practice provides comprehensive foot and ankle care that includes all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery. “I take a conservative approach and develop effective treatment plans that take into account a patient’s lifestyle,” states Dr Wachtler. Dr. Wachtler is concerned by an uptick in plantar fasciitis during COVID due to footwear with less support and decreased activity. The condition is an irritation to the ligament that supports the arch, resulting in heel pain. Treatment may include stretching exercises, custom made orthotics or cortisone shots. “In cases where these approaches don’t promote healing I recommend newer technologies such as platelet-rich plasma injections or shock wave therapy in which microtrauma is induced in the foot tissue that initiates a healing response.” The challenge, with all feet related pain and conditions, is to heal with minimal disruption to everyday life.

herapy, Dr. Amanda AsterMcKenna believes, is a gift you can give yourself and a gift you can receive. “It is okay to ask for help.” Dr. Aster-McKenna is a licensed clinical psychologist in both New Jersey and New York specializing in trauma and its sequelae. “My background, my training, and my passion is working with trauma, PTSD and addiction” she says. “And underneath those bigger umbrellas there’s usually a sprinkling of sadness, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and/or unresolved grief.” A lively, bubbly person in everyday life, Dr. Aster-McKenna carries those traits into her sessions with clients. “I look at it as we are two humans in this room experiencing life together. I take a very humanistic approach that is grounded in both Eastern and Western philosophies. Using this method, more formally termed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a contemporary cognitive behavioral therapy approach, combined with meditation, mindfulness and breath exercises, help to slow down the rapidly moving noise in the form of thoughts that we all experience, leading us to make choices that are more in line with our value system and be less impulsive.” Dr. Aster-Mckenna states, “I am deeply committed to helping my clients maximize their emotional and psychological strength. I truly believe that therapy can help foster individuals to be more than just ‘okay.’

RECOVERING FROM COVID-19 An Innovative New Program Treats Lingering Symptoms
F
or many COVID-19 patients, “getting better” is a long journey. To meet these needs, SBMC has created the Post-COVID-19 Comprehensive Assessment, Recovery and Evaluation (CARE) program. CARE is designed for patients who are still having symptoms four or more weeks after a positive COVID-19 test, says Vanessa Trespalacios, MD, RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group provider and CARE Medical Director. CARE patients have the advantage of being connected with Saint Barnabas Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Health’s vast range of specialists. “Because we are such a complete system, we have excellent providers in multiple specialties,” Dr. Trespalacios explains. “We have their commitment that they will be able to accommodate our patients in a timely manner.” Knowing that complex medical care can be intimidating or confusing, the CARE program has a nurse navigator to guide patients and facilitate appointments. Many of program’s providers and specialists are located in the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center at 200 South Orange Avenue in Livingston—the same place where the CARE program is located. “Patients are able to get most of their testing in the same place, with visits to subspecialists in other locations as required,” states Dr. Trespalacios. To learn more about the Post-COVID-19 CARE program at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, call 888.COVID94, visit www.rwjbh.org/covidcare or email postcovidcare@rwjbh.org.

Managing Health Care at Home Chrill Care Treats Clients with Respect, Compassion, Professionalism By Sue Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein
C
hrill Care, Inc. was founded in 1948 by Marion Yaguda and Geraldine O. Delaney and provided in home care for the Chronically ill. The name “Chrill Care was devised from this service. Chrill, under the direction of Deborah Del Vecchio, COO and Justin Sanzari CFO takes Chrill and Home Health Care to a new level of care. “We continue to review our services and make them more service friendly to our Seniors that require services,” said the COO, Deborah Del Vecchio. We are preparing to pilot a new service to our seniors who may not want a stranger in their home. This service will be known as ‘Freedom Care.’ Chrill will assess the needs of the client, and if there is a member of their house who would like to provide that service, Chrill can train them to care for their loved one. Training time depends on the needs of the patient, and if the family member wants to become certified as a home health aide, Chrill will also provide a 90-day training free of charge. This would typically cost about $400.00. For those Seniors who are comfortable with the traditional level of care, Chrill will provide either a Certified Home Health Aide or a Home Friend to care for the client. All of their employees are supervised by a Registered Nurse who also does visits to the homes and monitors the clients care. In addition, Chrill is a Mobile Meals of America company. “We normally service 300 to 400 seniors per day in Essex County, and during the height of COVID we were serving over 850 meals a day. Chrill also provides Essex County seniors a congregate nutrition program at nine park locations throughout Essex County.”
Justin Sanzari, CFO and Deborah Del Vecchio, COO
Chrill Care is funded, in part, by the Essex County Division of Senior Services and this funding allows Chrill to service seniors in the entire Essex County area. Local seniors may not realize they are eligible for these services, sometimes at no cost. “We want to make sure everyone in Essex County knows these services are available and we’re happy to help determine if they qualify and what they qualify for,” says Deborah. It also provides home health aides outside of the county for private pay or through Medicaid. Chrill will assess the needs and work with the families of the client to get them every service necessary to keep them ‘safe at home.’

Diamond Minds
Lessons on Life, Leadership and the Art of Business Tom Maoli
BF: What are the elements you put into play to achieve the goal of a number one status? TM: The first thing is clearly that I don’t know everything and I learn and hire the right people around me to educate me on what I need to learn. Driving sales in a car dealership is all about customer service and hospitality. You have to understand what the customer wants. Everybody thinks they want a car, and yes they do, but that’s not what they really want. They want to feel like their money has value. BF: How do you differentiate yourself so people see that in your actions and in your environment? TM: Everything we do in the dealership is based on hospitality. It’s about understanding who you are, what your needs are, what your family’s about, everything you like and what you do and building a bond between us and the customer.
T
om Maoli was born and raised in Nutley NJ. He has become one of New Jersey’s top entrepreneurs. He built and sold a global logistics company servicing medical technology companies in 700 cities around the world. He built multiple high end luxury car dealerships including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Lexus. Maserati and Alpha Romeo. He is a commercial realestate developer, also an antique and Classic Car collector, founder of the JoeZone Coffee company, radio host and more. This month I sat down with Tom and asked him to share his success strategies. Barry Farber: What’s your definition of success? Tom Maoli: Achieving a goal you have set for yourself or your organization and becoming number one.
BF: How does this strategy apply across all fields of business and in general? TM: We are implementing the same strategy in JoeZone, a new coffee franchise built around a sports theme and hospitality mentality. When you walk into a sports bar they throw a beer up on the bar...well we’re different. First of all we don’t have alcohol, we’re a coffee shop. And then we are going to know everything about the customer. We’re going to know what teams they like, what players they like and we are going to feed them information through their smart phone on updates on their players and teams and trades. When they walk in we aren’t just going to talk to the customer about the weather but about everything that they like and are interested in. BF: What are some key tips you’d like to share?
Barry Farber
TM: When you’re in business you need to make sure you’re making a profit. If you don’t make a profit you can’t provide that service, that value because you won’t have enough money to support that important function. You’ve got to pay good people to execute that business plan. You can’t give stuff away for free. I’m not saying gauge them, I’m saying you have to make a fair profit to reinvest back into the service. Also, knowing your customer is key. Anybody can get business. It’s knowing your customer that’s important. It doesn’t matter what business you’re in. If I was in the construction business or landscaping business...if I know my customer and I know how to make my customer happy they’re going to tell their neighbors, they’re going to tell the people in the supermarket and it spreads like wildfire. BF: When you started in the car business what did you do from the beginning? TM: As soon as we took over we started implementing a hospitality approach that we instilled into our staff, we empowered the staff to be able to take care of the customer and give the customer what they need. For instance, if you’re working and you can’t get your car serviced we send someone to pick it up and drop off a loaner car and then bring your car back to you. When you come into the dealership our goal is to tell you what you don’t need not what you need. Because if we tell you what you don’t need we build trust. And once we build trust with you you’re a lifetime customer. It’s not about selling one car, it’s about selling multiple cars to your family and your friends and everyone that you associate with. Create that positive lifetime luxury experience. That’s what it’s all about.
