New Providence Resident is Painting for a Cause
J
oel Rivas Francisco of New Providence is painting for a cause. He donated two of his paintings this past April to Eagle Eye Charities, which promotes digital learning and extended learning to tribal communities. There will be a silent auction and gallery on 5th Avenue in NYC, with all of the proceeds donated to the cause. The father of three boys is a freelance graphic artist who says he paints at midnight. He primarily paints in watercolors, acrylics and at times oils. He says he “feels good about the donation as it is nice to have his work appreciated.”
Chatham Family Gives Back to Food Pantries

Fundraising for the People of the Ukraine Through Song
P
erforming Arts 5678, of Berkeley Heights fundraised for the Ukrainian people on April 10th via a musical theatre-based performance. All proceeds went to the Salvation Army for Ukraine relief efforts. The Broadway Songbirds performed fully choreographed music, and other students were also showcased. Jessica Lombardi, owner, and Courtney Hirschey, musical director, said, “In addition to classes, we offer opportunities to perform in multiple ways, always with an eye toward giving back to the community.”
isa and Craig Duke, and their daughter Natalie, of Chatham, have partnered with the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township (PCCT) to use the large garden on their property to grow fresh produce for those without access. Members of the church have signed up to help plant herbs, leafy greens, root vegetables, and other garden favorites from Asparagus to Zucchini. “We’ve always wanted to use the property for the greater good,’’ says Lisa. What was once an actual poultry and produce farm is now dubbed Sunday Farm, and Lisa and her family are “excited to have the church involved in helping provide fresh, homegrown produce to local food pantries.” There are also plans for workshops and educational outreach on organic gardening, composting, and sustainability as the new Sunday Farm springs to life.
Millburn Resident is a Drummer in a 55 and Over Band
J
ane Greenwald, 77, of Millburn is the only drummer in the New Horizons International Band in Morris County. She has been playing in the band, which has around 35 members ages 55 and over, for 10 years. She says the band plays the “type of music you would hear a high school band play.” “I love playing in the band, which comprises people of all abilities from beginner to accomplished musician, as it offers a low-pressure environment,” she adds. Jane feels the band offers a “wonderful social function.” The band plays six concerts a year at nursing homes, assisted living facilities and at YMCA’s. obert Currie of Summit, Commander of the Name and Arms of Currie, received the prestigious National Tartan Day Award in Alexandria, VA on April 5, 2022. This is the 20th year the award has been presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership in preserving and promoting Scottish history and culture.

Currie has been a leader in the Scottish-American community since 1987. He formed the Currie Family Society in 1992, which hosts a variety of events and programs (including Summit’s popular “Pipes of Christmas” concerts. “I am honored and humbled to receive this great award. I am especially grateful to our worldwide Currie Kindred and especially to my wife Suzanne and daughters Hilary and Claire for their steadfast support in this incredible journey.” The Learned Kindred of Currie are an ancient family which can trace their origins to the 13th century. In medieval times, the Curries were renowned as Gaelic bards who chronicled much of the early history of Scotland.
Millburn Resident is a ‘Ring Hunter’
K
ati Schmidt of Millburn is a ‘ring hunter.’ When someone loses a ring, keys, or other metal objects, Kati arrives with her metal detector and tries to locate it. A full-time forensics accountant, Kati has been enjoying this hobby since 2018. She says she has always liked treasure hunts, so this was right up her alley. Aside from helping people locate things on their property, she can also search the water by scuba diving. She also enjoys treasure hunting for herself where she will research a property to learn its history and then likely find relics, coins, jewelry, etc., which she donates to the Ronald McDonald House. “I love what I do because it feels good to give someone something back that was important to them.” Kati can be contacted at kati@greenwooddetecting.com.

Chatham High School Seniors Sleep Out to End Youth Homelessness

hatham High School senior, Kyle Hollerith, and six of his friends: TJ Mackessy, Tommy Sennett, Aidan Johnson, Kaye Stevenson, Matt Lonergan, and Max Williams, recently participated in the Covenant House Sleep Out to End Youth Homelessness event for the second time in two years, where they slept in their cars to raise money for children facing homelessness. First, they remotely attended an event where people at Covenant House told stories of what they went through, and they then slept in their cars in Kyle’s driveway. In the morning, they talked about how they felt, how it went, and what they learned. They raised over $2,000. Kyle said it was cold sleeping in his car and that he couldn’t go inside. “I can’t imagine doing this every day,” said Kyle. “I have so much empathy for people who are suffering from homelessness.” He added, “It was a really great event. It really opened my eyes. Everyone
should experience this event, especially people who are my age who are fortunate enough to live the way we do with our own homes.” Kyle said his team of seven 17- and 18-year-olds is excited to do it again. According to the website, “Covenant House builds a bridge to hope for young people facing homelessness and survivors of trafficking through unconditional love, absolute respect, and relentless support. Their doors are open 24/7 in 31 cities across six countries and their high-quality programs are designed to empower young people to rise and overcome adversity, today and in the future. Thanks to donations from people like Kyle, 2,020 kids on average are sheltered nightly; 9,200 youths are cared for in the Covenant House residential programs; nearly 50,000 kids have been reached in the past year, 4,000 youths have been helped with finding stable housing; 1,600 youths have been helped find employment; and youths have received 720,000 nights of shelter.”
“This year, 4.2 million kids will be homeless in America,” according to Covenant House. People can “fight these numbers by joining or starting a Sleep Out today where they’ll raise lifesaving funds to give kids safe shelter and opportunity and unite the community against youth homelessness.” The Sleep Out “isn’t about pretending to be homeless,” Covenant House says on the website, “we Sleep Out so homeless kids don’t have to. When you Sleep Out, you’re not just raising funds and awareness – you’re showing these young people your commitment to their future.” “Whether you join an existing Sleep Out or creating one of your own with friends and family, colleagues, or church, you’re shining a light on the injustice of youth homelessness and inspiring entire communities to step up and protect kids,” says the Covenant House website. “1774 Sandwich Initiative” at Newark Academy Gives Back to the Homeless By Jackie Schatell
F
reshman Leon Sarkissian has started the 1774 Sandwich Initiative at Newark Academy, in Livingston, where each month, Upper School students are making sandwiches for St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, which feeds the homeless. “I heard someone at my church say they needed more sandwiches at St. John’s,” says Leon. “It seemed like something I could take on that would make a big difference in fighting food insecurity one sandwich at a time.” Leon says, “This is truly an important cause which is unfolding in our own backyard. We need at our level to make a difference and help each other.” Those in need go to St. John’s for hot meals, and then get a paper bag with the sandwiches to take with them for the two other meals of the day, and for the elderly or children in their households who could not come.

We need at our level to make a difference and help each other.” —Leon Sarkissian Leon’s family has been involved in assisting the homeless in NYC and then in NJ since coming to the US in 2003. “Our parents always made sure to that we participated actively in one way or another,” he says. “We have made beds, cooked, cleaned, organized toiletries, played games with children and done many sleepovers as the welcoming centers require two organizers to be present.” Leon says he joined the homeless cause in 2012. “Our parents taught us that we could not imagine living a full spiritual life without first thinking of others,” he says. “Nowadays because of Covid-19, we bring food, gift cards and warmth to the homeless who are fortunately housed in hotels, motels, and temporary housing.” “Aside from a profound sense of humility, one lesson my older siblings and I learned is that the homeless line in America is a very very fine one,” he says.
Leon Sarkissian The launch of the 1774 Sandwich Initiative was on MLK Day where the school officials and Leon coordinated a Zoom call where the Newark Academy students realized the first 967 sandwiches. They have since organized two more sandwichdrives, which resulted in 2,200 sandwiches in total. This has surpassed Leon’s expectation by 24 percent. The project is ongoing, and the next target date is set for April 30, which is Newark Academy’s Annual Day of Giving. Leon, who says he has many plans for the future of the drive, has started asking for the help of everyone around him, even from some celebrities. He has also set a new and more ambitious target of 17,740 sandwiches to be made by the end of his Senior year.

Whippany Railway Excursions
A
t the beginning of the Twentieth Century, a lovely young woman clad all in white, extolled the virtues of riding the clean trains of the Lackawanna Railroad. This fictional character, named ‘Phoebe Snow’ was renowned as much for her beauty, as well as for the advertising jingles that accompanied the adverts she appeared in. Today, Phoebe invites you to step aboard the Whippany Railway Museum’s excursion trains and take a ride into the past. Their trains feature a unique collection of restored, vintage rail cars from historic railroads that once served New Jersey and the Metropolitan area. Passengers can board a caboose and experience an old-fashioned, relaxing way of spending a Sunday afternoon with the family. Children love swaying to the motion of the old cars while they listen to the nostalgic “clickety-clack” sounds the wheels make as they clatter over the rail joints. Passengers upgrade their excursion experience by choosing to ride in our awardwinning Lackawanna Railroad Subscription Club Car No. 2454, which radiated elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express’. The Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’ is a beautiful conveyance that features all the amenities offered by the CNJ’s deluxe Blue Comet passenger train of the 1930s. During the 45-minute ride, the train travels the route of the historic “Whippanong Trail” through Whippany, East Hanover, Livingston and Roseland in Morris and Essex Counties. The train will pass through the remnants of pre-historic Glacial Lake Passaic, a natural swamp which supports abundant wildlife, such as deer, turtles, wild turkeys, hawks and rabbits. The ride also features the thrill of crossing high above the Passaic River over a steel bridge. Greenwood Gardens Re-Opens
midst a stunning display of spring blossoms, Greenwood Gardens will open its gates to the public on May 1. A former private estate owned by the Day and Blanchard families, today Greenwood is a non-profit 28-acre public garden and historic site, and a peaceful haven graced with terraced gardens, stately fountains, woodlands, grottoes, Arts and Crafts follies, and winding paths. In honor of National Public Gardens Day and in appreciation of its constituents, Greenwood is holding a Community Day on May 6. The gates will be open to all
members of the community to tour the gardens admission-free. Music will once again fill the Main Terrace and spill into the garden during five live concerts. Three evenings of Jazz in the Garden, sponsored by Stone Mountain Properties, are scheduled for May 20, June 24 and July 22. Lyrica Chamber Music and The Discovery Orchestra performances round out the lineup for this year’s concert series. A variety of specialized tours, workshops and lectures will take place throughout the season. Visitors can tour the garden
on a bird walk with a New Jersey Audubon naturalist, discover their creative sides in a journaling workshop focused on sensing and recording their emotional reactions to the natural world, or learn about the life and legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted, America’s first “Landscape Architect” in a lecture by celebrated author, Marta McDowell.

lbert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life (ASLFL) will be hosting, The 12th Annual International Youth Leadership Conference, from Sunday, July 24 to Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Maynooth University, Co. Kildare, Ireland. ASLFL is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization that actively promotes educational opportunities for young adults all across the globe. ASLFL’s efforts meet the educational mission of the Ireland Chamber of Commerce – USA (ICCUSA). ASLFL is committed to developing and presenting meaningful, state-of-the-art youth leadership and mentorship programs to 15-18 year-olds of good character with demonstrated leadership skills and an interest in community service around the globe. The conference is a wonderful opportunity for students with different race, ethnicity and religions to work together and learn about each other’s different cultures. Participants will learn how to communicate with their peers from all over the world and be a part of making the world a better place by protecting the global environment with no compromise to the needs, wants and expectations of those who inhabit the globe. hen Marci Robins Kessler first ventured into a consignment store, she immediately knew that there was a better way to run this type of business. She turned around, headed home and created a plan to open her own. And 30 years later she is still innovating. “I traveled the country doing research and talking to owners of successful consignment stores,” said Kessler. A few months later, DBLTKE was born. “From day one, we were profitable. And, the reason why high-end designers can be much more easily recycled and reused is due to the high quality of the items. You can use them over and over again and they’ll still be in great condition.” Additionally, driving home their mission, DBLTKE uses only sustainable materials throughout the store. DBLTKE consigns jewelry, clothing, shoes and handbags. Throughout the store, customers will find brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Gucci. When items are brought in to be consigned, they are thoroughly examined by the staff to ensure they are saleable, seasonable, and in impeccable condition. Once an item sells, the consignor receives roughly 50 to 70 percent of the selling price (higher in some cases). In addition to individual consignors, the store features brand-new merchandise consigned by manufacturers and stores. “We must have over 10,000 items in the store,” added Kessler. Everything in the store is merchandised and presented in a thoughtful way for a boutique shopping experience. DBLTKE offers online shopping and customers across the globe consign and shop through its ecommerce site. In the future, customers can expect to be able to experience DBLTKE in the metaverse. For Kessler and DBLTKE, customer service for their global client base is key. “It’s very important that our customers get the service that they deserve. People are choosing where they’re going to spend their money, and as a customer I want to spend my money in a place where I enjoy shopping,” said Kessler. “We believe in honesty and taking care of our customers.”

Ida Picker ENTRANCING WITH THE OBVIOUS Story and portrait by Dan Epstein
C
hatham resident Ida Picker, after majoring in English at Harvard College started a career in journalism working first for local papers and then for Bloomberg News, later teaching English Literature and Journalism at the Morristown-Beard School. But it was after enrolling at the Art Students League in NYC in 2008 studying life drawing and watercolor that she began painting in earnest. Her mother, the painter Henriette Simon Picker was also a great influence. A recent exhibit in the Ann’s Place Gallery at the Visual Arts Center of NJ, entitled Necessary Things, featured paintings made by Picker during the recent pandemic lockdown when she went looking for subjects to paint and found them right under her nose in her laundry room. She painted the obvious objects and scenes we all too often in taking for granted never stop to really look at. With simple lines and very limited, elemental color schemes we can’t help but look and find ourselves delighted. Look at Maytag3, an 18x14 acrylic on canvas painting, her washer, waiting to be filled, calling out with an open mouth for us to do some laundry. Using

angles and visual dynamics we are captured. In Three Yellow Detergents And Maytag, also an 18x14 acrylic on canvas, three jugs of laundry detergent are lined up like soldiers waiting for a call to arms and begin work. We wonder why there are so many bottles, and ponder the mystery while being entranced by the bold colors and graphic symmetry. Portraiture also occupies a large place in Picker’s practice, and here two are presented. In both Dave and Julian, both 20x16 oil on canvas paintings, we see deceptively simply color treatments both illustrate the light effect, and define the modeling and shape of the faces of her subjects. In both, with very different expressions rendered, insights into the personalities Picker’s subjects are revealed. Tips for Handling ANXIETY By Jackie Schatell
M
ay is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Magdelena Brown, a therapist at Discovery Wellness in Cedar Knolls has some tips for handling anxiety. Anxiety is intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Magdelena says anxiety is a very normal state of being, provided there is an actual danger. There are a few key signs that one is having anxiety which include: feeling nervous, restless, or tense; having an impending sense of danger, panic, or doom; having an increased heart rate; sweating; feeling weak or tired; or having trouble concentrating or sleeping. Magdelena says while there are many techniques one can use; she recommends deep breathing and the 54321 Grounding Technique. She says the fastest way to calm down during an anxiety attack is to take slow deep breaths through the nose to the diaphragm because when you “fill the belly with air, it presses on the vegus nerve on the spine, which signals the brain that the danger is over, and the body can calm down.”

hitening stained teeth can make smiles look much more beautiful. However, it is important to whiten them the right way in order to maintain healthy teeth and gums. “In our office, it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to the entire process. The first half hour will just be blocking out the gums so they don’t get irritated or burned,” says Dr. Helen Chiu, of Chiu Dental Care. “This way, the bleaching gel will only be on the teeth.” The teeth are whitened using hydrogen peroxide, and because this can cause sensitivity, it is best performed by a professional. There are also different levels of whiteness, and Dr. Chiu makes sure her patients have realistic expectations, unlike with some claims made with products sold over the
counter. “With our shade guide, we can tell the base color and how white your teeth will get after one session,” state Dr. Chiu. “If people start with very dark teeth, they will go up two levels of whiteness; but if they want them even whiter, it will require additional sessions.” Once the patients reach the desired whiteness, they can touch up at home once a month to maintain the whiteness. Some stains are harder to whiten than others, and if teeth are not able to be whitened due to certain conditions, she also offers porcelain laminates. With laminates, the stains will be covered permanently.

T
his month I sat down with Chance Healy, a founding partner of 1776 by David Burke. Launching a restaurant with Topgolf Swing Suites in the middle of a pandemic had its ups and downs with valuable business and life lessons.
Chance: Nobody in their right mind is signing a long-term commercial lease in the middle of a pandemic. But we did and got a pretty favorable term in the process which worked out for ourselves and our investors. But you still have to take a risk in the process. I learned a great deal in this process. Having the support of people around you and your partners is critical. So many times we could’ve pulled the plug and walked away from it. We could’ve done that in the middle of Covid but we were so passionate about the idea and concept of partnering with Topgolf Swing Suites and Chef Burke we just had to make this happen. If we can get through this we can make it work.

Barry Farber: How did this idea come about? Chance Healy: My partners are David Vorcheimer and George Schneider. I’ve known David for years and actually palled around Morristown with him when we were kids. David approached me with a business idea one day and the model was–golf simulators, a great restaurant, and a great bar. Initially we were thinking of doing a private club somewhere in town. A place where golfers had a destination to play on the off-season since in New Jersey that season is only six months long. My background is in hospitality from restaurants to hotels and was intrigued with this idea. Once we got a big name like Topgolf Swing Suites on board we thought why don’t we get a great celebrity chef on board to run the kitchen. So we brought on celebrity chef David Burke. Barry: What did you learn in this process and what were some of the obstacles you ran into starting a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic?
We learned a lot about ourselves. Through integrity, supply chain problems, fear as a motivator and a lot of hard work. Barry: What did that work involve? Chance: Executing on every detail. Converting two old boring office spaces and condensing them into one magical space that we are in love with. Topgolf provided some technology support that was over and above our expectations. Chef Burke had all teams hands on deck in menu design, kitchen design and more. Barry: What was the most important component to your success in this endeavor? Chance: Trust. Sharing everything. When you’re going out to borrow money from a bank they are going to see everything. You see all the good and you see all the bad. The key is to be transparent with your partners. When you’re in a stressful business like this that demands so much attention and so much manpower the key is to be upfront and honest with everything you’re doing.
Barry: What did you learn about yourself in this process?

Chance: The most important thing is to trust your instincts. Trust your gut. My mother always told me to, “Trust your gut, trust your gut.” From the people you meet to the ones you’re partnering with, always be forthright and honest. Be true to yourself. Barry: Are there any other interesting fact you’d like to share? Chance: I’m a product of the restaurant business. My grandmother owned two restaurants. My father ran one and my aunt ran the other. I was raised in both of them. As soon as I could get my elbows over the sink I was a dishwasher and got right to work. I was literally born into the restaurant business, I was baptized in our family restaurant by our priest on the restaurant bar! I guess you could say I was destined to be in the restaurant business sooner or later. So opening up this restaurant in this tumultuous time seems as if everything we’ve touched has worked out and It’s sure not been without struggle and adversity. It almost feels like someone from above is looking out for us. Barry: I feel like it always comes down to the ability to take adversity and difficulty and pull out the best from it because there’s always opportunity in any difficulty. Chance: It’s funny because I have a Wall Street background and some of the best investors of all time, including Warren Buffett, love when the investor sentiment goes down and everything becomes risky and everybody starts pulling their money back into their pocket. Then they start investing and jumping in because in any stressful situation there is an opportunity to grow and expand. And with a small business like ours there’s no difference.
