New Nature Activity App Launches at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

H

arding Township’s Friends of Great Swamp NWR has launched a free smartphone app called “Agents of Discovery” to provide visitors with an immersive way of learning about and enjoying the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. While the app is designed especially for elementary through middle school children, adults will enjoy it too. Those interested in exploring the Wildlife Observation Center should download the app prior to arrival. Once there, they will be able to partake in the first mission where Agent Painted Turtle will guide them on a mobile scavenger hunt along the boardwalk to the Sportsman’s Blind. Children will love solving all the challenges to complete the mission while learning about plants and animals, frogs, hummingbirds, turtles and other Refuge inhabitants along the way. More missions will be available in the future. www.friendsofgreatswamp.org

Madison Resident’s Dedication to the Homeless is Heroic By Jackie Schatell

S

un Ju Valenta is on a mission to help the homeless in Newark. Born and raised in South Korea, where seeing people in need in her neighborhood was quite common, charity is a cause that is close to her heart. From a young age, Sun saw her parents help the needy and has passed down the same spirit of giving back to her daughters, Jenna, 16, and Ava, 12, who often help with her endeavors. When the pandemic first hit, Sun began making and donating face masks, scrap hats and face shields to anyone who needed them. After donating around 700 face shields, she began enlisting the help of some volunteers in Madison and Chatham. She now has a website called KATbySun.com where she sells customizable face masks and uses some of the funds generated for her charity work. In November 2020, Sun saw a Facebook post saying that someone was looking for blankets for the homeless in Newark. She says she “knew of a group of women in Pequannock making blankets and put them in touch with one another.” She then immediately joined the group that was doing the street outreach. She says she was “amazed at the number of homeless people she saw, and felt that a few blankets would simply not be enough.” The homeless people she met were freezing and were asking for socks, hats, boots, coats, earmuffs, and hand warmers. She felt compelled to help them and that is how her journey began.

When the pandemic first hit, Sun began making and donating face masks, scrap hats and face shields to anyone who needed them. Sun used Facebook to post that she was collecting warm clothes. “The response was amazing,” she says. “My garage was filled with bags of donated items every week. Many people told me that after being cooped up during the pandemic, they were eager to help others. Some said they had always wanted to volunteer but didn’t know how to get started and they thanked me for organizing the efforts.” She says that each time she tells people about the work she is doing, she gains more helpers and donations. Many of those now helping her are Girl Scouts, church groups, local

(Left-right) Daniel Defelice, SunJu Valenta, Kristin Hahn, Nancy Eldridge businesses, and individuals from Madison, Pequannock, Chatham and more. In the winter, she sometimes had as many as 60 volunteers donating sandwiches and clothes, and says she is so grateful for their generosity. By request, she takes a few volunteers to Newark every Sunday for the street outreach experiences. Some of the people she brings “have pains in their own lives.” She says, “I see pain heals pains and many people have touched my heart and it is beautiful at the same time.” Soon after starting her charitable actions, Sun started taking special requests from the homeless and began to know many of the people she was helping by face. Some told her their names and their stories. “I feel trusted that they share their names and painful stories with me,” she says, adding “it’s sad to see how the numbers of homeless are increasing due to the pandemic, and now I can’t stop helping them because they are expecting to see me on Sundays at 8am.” When Sun returns home from the street outreach, she posts photos, shares inside stories, and her thoughts on her Facebook page. “People are waiting for my reports on Sunday nights and really like knowing that they are making a difference by seeing an impact,” she says. Those interested in donating to help Sun Ju purchase food, clothes, and essentials for the homeless are invited to do so via Venmo, where they can find her @SunJu-Valenta. Sun also plans to start a Go-Fund-Me project in May. To read Sun’s accounts of her visits with the homeless and see her photos, she can be found on Facebook @SunValenta and Instagram @ KATbySun.

Freshman Ignites Student Movement to Help Others During the Pandemic By Jackie Schatell

U

pon realizing that people were having trouble scheduling their own vaccine appointments, Alexa Walters, a freshman at Watchung Hills Regional High School, sprang into action over night. She, along with 45 volunteer students, some from NJ high schools in Livingston, Berkeley Heights, New Providence and more, five ambassadors, six board members and one advisor launched Save Our State Stat (SOSS) and began arranging what would become 1,750 appointments statewide. “I was discussing with my family about how hard it was for some people to get appointments, and asked myself how I could help,” says Alexa. “I looked up the death rates and knew I had to do something.” She says, “It felt good to help people. I never imagined that my conversation would’ve led to such a wonderful endeavor.” Once it became apparent that attaining appointments had eased up, SOSS pivoted and began a PPE drive for Lead Charter School in

Newark. So far, SOSS has partnered with local Boy and Girl Scout Troops to collect PPE items including unused face masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and cleaning supplies. SOSS has also placed a collection box at Town Hall in Warren and is collecting supplies outside of Walgreens in Warren. June 2021

“We chose to help LEAD because it supports opportunity youth students, many of whom are in reduced circumstances and have disengaged from traditional schooling,” says Alexa, who says she is grateful to everyone at SOSS. “It feels fitting to be a group of high school students helping other high schoolers.” MyVicinityMagazine.com 9

While the menu includes plenty of casual fare such as burgers, sandwiches, wraps, pizza, a raw bar, even a fairly developed selection of sushi and sashimi selections, what’s not to be missed are the entree selections. The noteworthy Chicken Savoy is cut up chicken rubbed down with handfuls of garlic, hard cheeses and herbs, then roasted in a “screaming hot oven” and splashed with vinegar is a definite winner. One of our favorites, featured here, is Chilean Sea Bass. It is pan seared and served over corn, black beans, peppers, celery, pineapple, with a corn coulis sauce. Add this interesting destination to your list of places to try.

Fifth Generation Jeweler Continues to Offer Honest and Superior Personal Service By Cynthia Burns, Photo by Dan Epstein

W

alter Bauman Jewelers provides high quality jewelry with a price structure that is advantageous to customers. Commitment to quality is evidenced by being a fifthgeneration jeweler in a business that dates to 1868. Owner Walter Bauman says, “The goal is for customers to purchase the right piece of jewelry at a fair price.” The business has established a history of pricing that is typically 50 to 60 percent below those of other jewelry stores and department stores, all while providing customers with honest and superior service. Bauman’s roster of 20 employees includes gemologists, designers, jewelers and watch makers, many that have been long-time employees. Customers may choose from a comprehensive collection of both new and estate jewelry or have a piece custom designed exclusively for them. The staff’s expertise guides a customer’s vision to fruition, resulting in a unique, exquisite piece of jewelry. Bauman notes that much of their jewelry comes with an insurance appraisal. Walter Bauman Jewelers’ Buy-Back program allows customers to sell jewelry, watches and coins back to the jeweler. A team of diamond experts and jewelry buying specialists examine and evaluate all components of the piece and offer cash back or a certificate for a purchase at the store. Bauman follows industry

trends to gauge what jewelry designs are in vogue. The best barometer, however, are his customers. He explains that so many pieces are made on premise that reflect the flair of his customers in West Orange and the surrounding towns. Walter Bauman Jewelers continues to be the personal jeweler of choice and distinction.

H

ave you ever wished you could go to a place like the fictional Cheers? Well it’s here in Chatham. This intimate, unpretentious pub features a classic bar surrounded by two levels of tables. They offer a good selection of traditional pub fare, like wings, burgers, salads and sandwiches, but the menu shines when you start ordering things like the Grilled Hanger Steak with roasted red potatoes, crispy onion straws, and a balsamic reduction, or Pan-Seared Scottish Salmon served with Parmesan herb reduction and a lemon beurre blanc sauce. Don’t bypass the Appetizer side of the menu; we liked the Seared Ahi Tuna, shown here, dressed with an orange sesame ginger vinaigrette with wasabi aioli and pickled ginger. A classic pub…and so much more.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club is Still Going Strong and Thriving By Jackie Schatell

E

stablished in 1921, Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club (CHCC) of Livingston has come a long way in 100 years. It has survived the Great Depression, the Great Recession and COVID-19—not many establishments can say that. The club is now thriving, but this has not always been the case, in fact, it was in danger of closing just seven or so years ago. A quest to revitalize the club began then and the results have been sensational. CHCC is now regarded as a “home away from home” for more than 400 members. It is a family-centric club that features a challenging 18-hole golf course; a totally refurbished Tennis Center with three Har-Tru tennis courts; and a pool area equipped with a full bar, locker rooms, flat screen TVs and a snack bar.

Many of the enhancements were implemented under emeritus Club President Jeff Feldman’s six-year reign and are continuing strong with his successor Gregg Melnick. Feldman credits renown General Manager Weisser Millien for bringing “immense joy” to CHCC’s members, who have benefitted from the “relaxed atmosphere, innovative events and parties” introduced by Millien. His events rival those of private clubs in NYC. The events are famous for top notch entertainment, cuisine and fun... some even with after parties. Millien gives a preview for the rest of the year. “We’re celebrating our 100th year anniversary throughout the rest of the year with special parties and events that will include a Black & White Party; Caribbean and College nights at the pool as well as a Mascarade Ball. We’ll sprinkle in local bands and comedy nights, an evening on Broadway, and dual pianos in between.” Millien explains, “My mission is to provide members and guest an experience they won’t find anywhere else.” CHCC has enjoyed a host of improvements and re-imagined spaces. “Two redesigned golf holes as well as eminent course improvements are taking CHCC’s golf course to a whole new level, providing us with a real ‘wow’ factor,” states Feldman. According to Melnick, “The tennis community has been fully activated and reengaged almost overnight thanks to a new robust program that includes Cardio Tennis, an hour long program of tennis drills and challenges set to music.”

He is particularly excited with the new outdoor room, featuring a functioning pergola that seats more than 150 people. “What is unique is that the louvers can electronically open and close, practically eliminating cancelled events due to inclement weather. Underneath the pergola you’ll find ceiling fans, large flat screen TVs along with LED lights and a sound system. We always say that it is the best outdoor restaurant in Livingston,” he boasts. Cedar Hill has always excelled at dining, so it comes as no surprise that even the food has been elevated with expanded seafood and contemporary American cuisine, paired with experimental dishes and beautiful presentations. “Our culinary team has done an unbelievable job in bringing a new mastery to the food for all pallets and dietary restrictions,” comments long time member Larry Goren. According to Feldman, “CHCC has been here through thick and thin for its members as an escape from the everyday and as a ‘home away from home.’ We’re excited to be able to continue to innovate into the future.” Melnick adds, “Most importantly—the members are happy!” June 2021

Father's Day 2021 Excursion Train Rides

F

or the first time since October 2019, the Whippany Railway Museum is pleased to offer Excursion Train Rides—Father’s Day, June 20. The trains depart for a 45-minute ride through the countryside. After a seven-year restoration effort by Whippany Railway Museum volunteers, their newest addition is ready for its unveiling— the Lackawanna Railroad Commuter Subscription Club Car No. 2454, built in 1912. This historic car was constructed by Barney & Smith Car Co., Dayton, OH, in 1912 for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad (DL&W), and converted from steam-hauled to electric propulsion in 1930 by American Car & Foundry Co. Celebrated New Jersey inventor, Thomas A. Edison rode as a guest in 1930. No. 2454 was assigned to the Hobokento-Gladstone run, on a train known as “The Millionaire's Express.” No. 2454 was retired from service on August 24, 1984. Riders are welcome to take a seat in one of the cushioned, painstakingly reproduced rattan arm chairs, admire the original wood inlay details and ride like a millionaire. Another train that is part of this Father’s Day event is a long-time favorite—the elegantly-restored 1927-era Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) ‘Club Car’ Jersey Coast. The car has the look and feel of a private club with

individual leather chairs, mahogany interior accented with stained glass, built-in tables and period ceiling fans. The striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space. Visitors can also opt for a ride in one of the restored cabooses and experience how the train crew lived on the rails. This part rolling office/part living quarters was the car where freight railroad employees did their administrative work, ate their meals and even slept on long runs.

Trains will depart at 12:30pm,1:45pm, 3:00pm and 4:15pm. The Museum building will be closed, but weather permitting, the G-scale outdoor model railroad will be operating. Restrooms are available on the grounds, but not onboard the train. Masking and social distancing is strictly required.

The Father's Day Train Ride is a fundraising effort to benefit the Whippany Railway Museum, a 501( c )3 non-profit operating heritage railroad that is staffed by volunteers. Donations from the public help to keep the Museum operational, but funds are still required to support this unique New Jersey treasure. Proceeds from the train rides will further enhance the Museum's mission and its historic preservation efforts.

June is

MEN’S HEALTH MONTH By Sue Baldani

L

et’s face it. Men don’t always take the best care of themselves. Common excuses are “I’m too busy” or “I feel fine. Why should I see a doctor?” Even when they think something may be wrong, some are still hesitant to visit a medical professional. Since June is Men’s Health Month, it’s a great time to be proactive about health and wellness. So guys, get started on the path to good health, and women, let’s encourage the males in our lives to live and feel their best. We all know that eating right, exercising, and getting proper medical care can lead to much longer lifespans. Follow these guidelines in June, and then continue to make these same choices throughout the year and every year:

Make an Appointment with Your Doctor

This is the first step. Your blood pressure and weight will be checked, and blood work may be ordered to test for issues such as diabetes, liver function, and cholesterol.

Get Screened to Identify, Treat and Prevent Diseases

Depending on your age and risk factors, your doctor will recommend appropriate screenings. For example, if you’re 50 or older and at an average risk of colon cancer, your doctor may prescribe a colonoscopy every 10 years. Your doctor may also suggest having prostate cancer

screening and other important tests. Yearly skin exams by a dermatologist are also critical to check for skin cancer.

Eat Healthy

Include lots of vegetables, fruits and lean proteins in your diet, and drink plenty of water. If you drink alcohol, do it in moderation.

Quit or Avoid Smoking

Lung cancer, heart disease, and other serious health issues are much more common in smokers.

Exercise

Like all of the muscles in your body, your heart needs to stay in shape. Get moving. You’ll not only feel better, you’ll look better.

Do a Mental Health Check

Depression and anxiety can cause people to miss out on some of life’s most enjoyable moments. Seek help from a mental health professional if you feel the need.

Pamper Yourself

Play golf, get a massage, take a nap, go for a hike–whatever it is you enjoy, do it. And then do it some more. The blue ribbon is the symbol of Men’s Health Month, so get busy and take home that winning ribbon. Do it for yourself and for those who love you.

Gigi Paralkar, DDS Livingston Family Orthodontics Fulfilling Dreams at Any Age By Christine S. Maxwell

G

igi Paralkar, DDS of Livingston Family Orthodontics has a thriving practice for area residents. Below Dr. Paralkar discusses how her patients can achieve a perfect smile at any age.

Who inspired you the most in establishing a successful orthodontic practice? My father was the most significant influence on my life ambitions and goals. An immigrant who had traveled halfway around the world to find a better life for himself and his family, he put his dreams of practice ownership on hold to offer us security. After his passing when I was in my early twenties, I decided to fulfill the dream for both of us. My father’s spirit lives on in my career as an orthodontist. His legacy is the driving force for excellence in my practice.

Can people of all ages benefit from orthodontics? Yes. People of all ages can benefit from orthodontics. Our practice sees children starting at age 7 through adolescence as well as adults. Nothing in our bodies stays completely static, and our teeth can move and shift with age. If your teeth are healthy and you maintain your dental care well, you can begin treatment at any time. Our practice has many parents who decide on their treatment after seeing the results we obtained for their children. My own parents had braces in their late forties. Recently, I had two patients in their seventies consult me about straightening their teeth. My adult patients inspire me with their zest for achieving their personal best. In my eyes, there should be no limitations on how you look or feel at any age. Livingston Family Orthodontics 201 S. ummit Hearing Aid Center provides a full complement of services including diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings and evaluations, treatment for tinnitus and live speech mapping. Mapping allows an audiologist to ensure a hearing aid is properly programmed. Leslie Herman, Au.D., CCC-A, Doctor of Audiology, says being fitted with a hearing aid has more to do with understanding conversations rather than hearing them. Hearings tests are not conducted during routine physical exams. Dr. Herman stresses the importance of getting an audiogram to establish a hearing baseline. Evidence-based research demonstrates a link between untreated hearing loss and reduced cognitive function, and an increased tendency to fall. Summit Hearing Aid Center provides a variety of hearing aid styles. The Center is among the few to offer Lyric Hearing, a new technology that is tiny and invisible. Dr. Herman and her staff are known for providing individualized service to achieve the best solution for each patient.

hen I see brick pillars at the entrance of a driveway leaning to one side it might be because the cement foundation did not go deep enough below the frost line. So when there is a cold winter and the ground shifts, it moves the foundation of the pillar. There’s a really good comparison to this and our life, business or anything that requires building. What are the fundamentals needed to build a strong foundation so we can support the activity when the environment becomes unstable? Here are a few of them:

1

Never stop planting. There is excitement when we seed for future growth, whether it’s a garden or your business. It creates new opportunities and gives you strength when other prospects don’t grow or lose their value.

2

Learn your craft well. Study everything about your profession so you attain deep knowledge. That deep understanding gives you great confidence which is one of the greatest assets when faced with adversity and a challenging environment.

3

Honesty should be at the top of the list for a foundation to stand strong. Speaking your mind might get you in trouble some times but it won’t ruin a 20 year relationship. Yet one lie in a time span of 5 seconds will do just that.

“The more one does and sees and feels, the more one is able to do, and the more genuine may be one’s appreciation of fundamental things like home, and love, and understanding companionship.”

4

100% effort all the time. I was watching a baseball game and speaking to a good friend who’s played baseball all his life. He said how disappointing it is watching one of the kids walk to first base because he thought his infield grounder would be an automatic out. You never know what could happen and you never know who’s watching.

5

Health is your wealth. Take care of your body...it’s the only one we have and for some reason we seem to take it for granted until it really matters.

6

Our attitude has to be mentioned as one of the keys to a solid foundation in life. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes of all time by Charles Swindoll; “This may shock you, but I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude is that single string that keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there’s no barrier too high, no valley to deep, no dream to extreme, no challenge too great for me.”
