Local Athletes Get NIL Sponsorships with Millburn Deli
S
teven Echavarria of Millburn and Drew Pfeiferr of Montclair have signed Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) agreements with Millburn Deli. NIL is a new initiative that was recently passed where high school and college athletes can be sponsored by a business. Steven is a 3rd year varsity baseball player and a 2nd year Varsity basketball player at Millburn High School, who committed to the University of Oregon for baseball during his freshman year to play baseball. Drew plays lacrosse for Montclair High School and is the quarterback of the football team. Kyle Rosenbaum, senior advisor and co-founder at Players U Advising is managing both Steven and Drew and has plans to do the same with players at the college level. Kyle says the Deli is getting double the usual engagements on the players’ posts.

Summit Native to Host Artfully Abled Art Show

heryl Taylor, owner Cheryl Taylor of Imagine That, in Florham Park, donated ten percent of the business’ proceeds on April 7 to Robbie’s World Foundation to help fund an upcoming event for moms of children with special needs. This foundation was started by Cindy Gelormini, who was featured as one of Vicinity Magazine’s Local Heroes last month, in honor of her son Robbie, who was autistic. The foundation holds a special place in Cheryl’s heart because Robbie attended many “gentle jump” events at Bounce Factory, which Cheryl used to own, where she hosted special needs holiday parties, partnered with Kean University Occupational Therapists, received grants and trained people in Autism Awareness and Acceptance. She has also held many sensory friendly events at Imagine That. “These activities are great experiences for my employees who are trained to work with people with special needs and provide a much-needed respite for parents,” says Cheryl. “These events are some of my most rewarding days on the planet,” she says.
achary Brooks has been an advocate for people affected by autism since he was in elementary school. Now a college Zachary Brooks junior, Zachary continues his efforts locally and on his college campus. Zachary will once again host Artfully Abled, an art show established in 2017, featuring works by individuals with developmental disabilities. The event will take place in June at Peanut Gallery in Summit with pieces by individuals from all over the region. Focusing on “abilities and not limitations,” Zachary states, “Artfully Abled demonstrates how everyone has skills, talents, and contributions to make to the world.” Zachary’s autism efforts as well as Artfully Abled have been inspired by his twin brother Jack who is on the spectrum. Zachary explains, “Art brings Jack peace and is a way for him to communicate his thoughts and feelings. Artfully Abled is truly a powerful event.”

Millburn Family Helps Lions Club Break Guinness World Record

ennifer, Peter, Eli, and Sam Rosenblatt of Millburn helped New Jersey Lions District M-16 break the Guinness World Record for the longest chain of spectacles ever created by stringing 43,000 feet of eyeglasses on 2,000 pieces of cardboard in Liberty State Park. The previous record was 16,000. The Rosenblatt family strung 2,500 pairs of glasses together at home and contributed them towards the event. They said it took almost a week to do. “It was a cool and unique way to raise awareness about the amazing community service Lions perform, and to do something meaningful together with my family,” said Jennifer. She added, “Lions seek to prevent blindness and is also dedicated to preventing hunger, protecting the environment, and helping children with cancer and people with diabetes.” Next, the glasses will be taken to the New Jersey Lion’s Eyeglass Recycling Center in Trenton to be cleaned and shared with people who need glasses but don’t have access to them.
Madison Montessori School Holds 24th Annual Genuine Art Auction

ecently, the Madison Montessori School hosted its 24th Annual Genuine Art Auction in support of scholarship funds. The auction included a talented and diverse group of professional New Jersey artists, including Ricardo Roig, Sarah Blank, Susan LaConti, Josie Dakers-Brathwaite, and Colleen James. Genuine Art is a program that engages students and professional artists in a collaborative process. Each year, the school’s theme, country of study, and learning intention inform the creative dialog between artists and students. This broad framework aligns with the Montessori philosophy and allows the artists’ creativity to combine with an unknown quantity—the children’s input. This year the theme of Earth, Wind and Fire, the country of study, Argentina, and learning intention of Perseverance, resulted in colorful and exciting original art pieces. The online gallery will remain on view throughout 2022. “It is incredibly special to see the children’s excitement in recognizing their contributions to artwork hanging in a gallery setting,” says Kimberly Ross, Madison Montessori School Parent and Co-Chair, along with Nicole Coughlin.
The Sensiband, Invented by Local New Jerseyans, Hits the Market
S
pine surgeon Mitchell Reiter, MD, who grew up in Livingston and now resides in Bernardsville, and his business partner Mark Drzala, MD, of Harding have invented the Sensiband, which is a wearable device that helps detect what metals a person is allergic to before they undergo surgery. The product launched in March and costs $100. “We kept the price low to make it affordable to everyone,” says Dr. Reiter. “Three of my four children have food allergies, so I am very attuned to allergies,” he says. “Over the years, I began noticing that some orthopedic and dental patients experienced persistent pain, rashes, or fatigue after implant surgery and I started putting the pieces together that they might be experiencing delayed type hypersensitivity reactions to the metals that were implanted,” he adds. “The Sensiband allows people to become their own advocates,” he says. “They can tell their doctors before surgery that they are allergic to particular metals allowing the surgeons to avoid implanting those metals during surgery.”

Twig Members Support Goryeb Children’s Hospital By Jackie Schatell

hatham residents Samantha Ekert and Amy Crandall lead the Chatham Twig, a branch of the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center. The Twig was started in 2010 and has approximately 50 members from Chatham and surrounding towns. The members are involved in hands-on projects and fundraising throughout Goryeb Children’s Hospital. To date, the Twig has donated $45,000 to support various programming and equipment needs and approximately $20,000 in in-kind collections. The Twig is a regular fixture at Morristown Medical Center. Over the years, its Goryeb projects have included hosting a variety of seasonal parties and parent education sessions, decorating the pediatric units quarterly and delivering seasonal patient goody bags, making no-sew fleece blankets for pediatric patients, assembling backpacks and supplies for pediatric cancer patients, and conducting various in-kind collection drives. The Twig has also held numerous events over the years including its signature Women, Wine, and Wisdom and Yoga in the Garden events. These fundraisers not only support the Twig’s activities, special events, and ongoing programming, but allow the Twig to make generous financial gifts to the hospital. For the third year, the Twig has sponsored a generous scholarship for the continuing education of a pediatric nurse. “Each of us has been touched by a nurse at one time or another— whether it’s bedside during childbirth, during a child’s ER visit, or a long-term stay due to pediatric illness. This is our small way of acknowledging the incredible work they do and compassion they have,” says Samantha.

According to Samantha, many Twig members have deep heartstring connections to the hospital. “The Twig is very dear to my heart because we lost an infant several years ago and I feel the work we do for the hospital touches families’ lives the way I was supported in my time of need,” says Amy. “I was thankful for what the hospital did for us and am so happy to return the favor to others.” She adds, “It is a nice way for women to lift each other up, support each other, and support causes that are important. Any way we can help each other is central.”

Millburn Resident Creates Video Legacies for People with Life Limiting Illnesses By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein
K
erry Glass of Millburn runs a non-profit called Memories Live that creates legacy movies for individuals who have life-limiting illnesses. Kerry’s goal is to use the power of film to eternalize loved one’s images, stories, and wisdom. She has been doing so, at no cost to her clients, since 2010. She funds her services through grants, fundraisers, and donations. The movies she creates run about 45 minutes long. If a client lives in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, filming takes place in the client’s home. She also films a good portion of the videos virtually, which allows her to work with people from all over the country. She edits the footage and creates chapters for each topic discussed. In addition, if photos are provided, Kerry can make a slide show at the conclusion of the live footage. The finished product is then mailed out on a USB drive. Kerry says that people tell stories about their lives, share advice, talk about future milestones, favorite TV shows, foods they like to eat, and so much more. Some read poetry or stories, play music, or do tasks like making virtual coffee together. She gives clients a standard list of questions and conversation starters. These questions help guide them and provide ideas for additional topics they may want to include in the conversation. “I encourage people to be creative,” she says. “These videos are a great way for children to get a glimpse of their parent after they are gone, or for a loved one to spend some time with a loved one they have lost,” she says. “Creating a movie is a unique experience that is an empowering and cathartic opportunity for both you and family to preserve a lifetime of memories.” Kerry adds, “I love meeting new people and hearing their stories and experiences. For them to come to me with their stories at such a delicate part of their lives is humbling. Cats in the Garden XV
T
he fifteenth annual Cats in the Garden car show will once again take place on Father’s Day, June 19 at Van Vleck House and Gardens in Montclair. Open to the public, this event is the only car show in New Jersey to feature over 100 Jaguar vehicles spanning eight decades. “The last event estimated over 600 in attendance. The Montclair Foundation netted over $5,000 from the event, which was used to assist with our grant-making to local nonprofit community organizations, as well as the upkeep of the house and gardens,” stated Executive Director, Mark Packer.

Jamie provides treatments like microneedling, in which tiny needles pierce the skin to promote a higher level of collagen production, which reduces signs of aging. Harmonium Choral Society Fundraising Event

is Royal Highness Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil of Rajpipla, India will be the featured guest at Dinner with a Prince as part of Harmonium Choral Society’s upcoming Open Hearts weekend. Prince Manvendra is India’s first openly gay royal. True Beauty in

M
illburn resident Oscar Peterson, who maintains a studio and teaching facility at the Farmstead Art Center in Basking Ridge is an artist whose portraits whose truly spoke to us. Born in Harlem and raised in Brooklyn, he was educated at The Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of NY before a busy career as an art director and designer/ illustrator for several corporations and non-profits before retiring to teach and do is own, personal art work. His efforts have been exhibited widely and he’s found in many private and corporate collections. Peterson’s preferred method is to work from real life, starting with traditional methods, he happily incorporates contemporary ideas into his work. Working in many different media, though his favorite for landscapes and still life paintings being oil, here we elected to share several of his powerful charcoal drawings. In Tell Me A Story, a 14x18 charcoal on grey paper, Peterson has. His subject comes to us out of the shadows using a classical treatment of chiaroscuro which is an effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on something. Drawn from life, here working with his favorite model.
Erin, 16x20 charcoal drawing Another favorite model is seen in Namysto, an 11x14 charcoal drawing. This one also done from life, though in the digital age, it was live online during one of the monthly workshops that Peterson offers to other artists. In it the Ukrainian subject wanted to wear a traditional Namysto-style necklace. Hence the drawing’s name. Peterson also used a somewhat heroicstyle pose, to honor the efforts of the Ukrainians who are so valiant in the current war. Finally, we have Erin, a 16x20 charcoal drawing on grey paper with exquisitely fine rendering. The fine detail in this classically inspired drawing took Peterson almost a month of three hour drawing sessions, five evenings a week! The facial features and hair are finely drawn and call to mind the work of the great masters of the renaissance. When asked for about his inspiration for making portraits, Peterson smiles and says he wants to show the true beauty In ordinary people. We like that, and think he accomplishes it regularly. eter DeLuca, MD, is an accomplished fellowship-trained sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon. Affiliated with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CMBC) and an RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group provider, Dr. Deluca has dedicated his career to treating athletes of all ages, including elite athletes in professional sports, and specializes in minimally-invasive surgery and shoulder and knee treatment. Dr. DeLuca brings a wealth of experience in sports medicine to RWJBarnabas Health, having trained extensively in problems of the shoulder and knee. Surgically, he performs advanced arthroscopic procedures such as ACL reconstructions (the tissue that connects the thighbone to the shinbone at the knee), shoulder labral repair, cartilage replacements, meniscus repairs and rotator cuff repairs. Arthroscopic surgery, as compared to open surgery, is a minimally-invasive surgery technique that requires a few little incisions around the joint rather than one larger one, shown to decrease complications post-op. At CBMC, Dr. DeLuca works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of therapists, athletic trainers, sports nutritionists and sports psychologists. His goal is to focus on younger patients, working with high school coaches and trainers on exercises that can potentially prevent athlete injuries. In addition to serving as the Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Flyers, Dr. DeLuca was the NFC Pro Bowl Team Physician in 2002, 2003 and 2010. His vast expertise also extended internationally, serving as an NHL consultant for the Sochi, Russia Winter Olympics in 2014. In 2014, Dr. DeLuca received the Dick Vermeil Lifetime Achievement Award from the Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation (OSDF) for his outstanding contribution and dedication in the field of sports medicine. his summer will be full of special occasions such as Father’s Day, graduation, block parties and just gathering with family and friends. We stopped in to talk to Jim Barth, owner of Barth’s Market in New Providence, to learn how Barth’s can help you prepare for your next gathering or event.
Tell us a little about how your customer buying habits change in the summer months. The thing that is common for all my customers is that they spend more time outdoors during the summer. Some of our customers are buying quick grill items for “dinner on the run” while their kids play travel sports. Other customers stock up on Barth’s steaks, burgers, and frankfurters to bring them to their beach houses or for their July 4th barbecues.

What are your best sellers during summer months? The short-rib and brisket burgers are known to be the best in the area. Customers also love our marinated steaks and chicken. A top seller are ribs that can be cooked in the oven, in a smoker, or at low temperatures on the grill. For special occasions and events, customers go to our New York Strip, Ribeye, and Porterhouse steaks. When a customer really wants to make a statement, they buy a Tomahawk steak or two.

Shortening The Gap By Barry Farber
W
hat’s the best path to shorten that gap between the inception of an idea to its execution and results? Here are several ways to do just that: Preparation - Sometimes you wonder if you’re taking too long to launch an idea or release a new product, but many times that preparation pays off in the quality of the end result. Word of mouth is a very powerful sales and marketing technique in any endeavor. And if your idea has been thought out and planned well it will benefit from the people spreading the word. It will also fuel your action because the belief and enthusiasm for the value you’ve worked hard to build drives you forward. So never underestimate the power and knowledge you gain from deep preparation followed by meaningful action. Environment - The people you surround yourself with are so critical when it comes to the execution. I look for many elements when forming relationships with partners, clients and vendors. But this one is at the top of the list. Trust. Sure, contracts help with the direction and roles each of
you plays in the process. But at the end of the day there is no price you can put on the value of a trusted relationship. Each of you going beyond each other’s expectations. It’s what helps you sleep at night. I remember one of the biggest agents in Hollywood being interviewed and asked why he has no contracts with his clients. His answer was simple. If they want to leave and they don’t see the value I provide, then they’re welcome to do that. It’s probably the sole reason why he has a premier clientele and why so many of them seek him out. Value - Every idea, invention, and new business concept needs to have powerful benefits for the audience it serves. This was drilled into my belief system many years ago after asking this simple question to publishers, QVC buyers and my retained clients: “What are the three most important criteria you look for when you make a decision on a new author, or a new product to air on QVC, or to hire a consultant to help you gain access to national accounts?” Each of their answers were different but what wasn’t different is the tremendous value that was put into
the development and design of the idea. Barry Farber Their answers helped sell millions of books, millions of patented writing instruments, and a large number of corporate clients over the years. Without true value there would be no foundation to stand on when times get tough or rejection and obstacles got in the way. I always like to work on projects that are unconventional in action but highly functional with results. They also have no resemblance to current market strategies. There’s an excitement built around a new concept and idea. It’s what really ends up as a breakthrough. It’s not the easiest road to take, although it is the most rewarding. People will always shoot your idea down when it doesn’t follow the normal way of operating in an industry. You have to be relentless in your pursuit and have a thick skin and know that you did your diligence when going through the points above. Especially the value you build around your idea.
