n light of the pandemic, Millburn is taking advantage of the Bridge Year Pilot Program that was recently announced for all of NJ by the NJ Department of Education. It permits a fifth year of high school for students in the 2021 and 2022 high school graduating classes. Those enrolled are able to defer their graduation for one year, while participating in one more year of academic courses and extracurricular activities including Spring sports. This program enables students to take advantage of missed opportunities because of COVID. They are still able to participate in graduation ceremonies and walk with their classes, but their diploma is held until the fifth year is completed. While students remain enrolled at Millburn High School, they must take between 9-12 credits each semester that may be earned from a combination of MHS and the County College.

THE BEST SPECIALTY BURGER?

V

icinity Magazine is proud to announce the first Specialty Burger Contest that will benefit the Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry. This is a fun way to promote local restaurants and give MCIFP the exposure they deserve as they help our neighbors in need. Through March 10, local restaurants can enter by submitting a burger from their menu OR one can be created—but, the entrees MUST be SPECIAL. Also the burger must be available to the public for purchase for 60 days from the start the contest which begins April 1st. Each burger will be featured in Vicinity Magazine and online where residents can vote for their favorites. The burgers with the most votes will be awarded Gold, Silver, Bronze Medals and be featured in Vicinity Magazine. All voters will be automatically entered to win 1 of 20 gift certificates to any of the competing restaurants. Safety, Support, & Solutions from Abuse By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein

E

veryone knows someone—a family member, a friend, or a neighbor who is a victim of physical, mental, or financial abuse. Abuse does not discriminate. It occurs throughout our population and affects the young, the old, every race, gender, creed, and all socio-economic sectors. Because one in five people suffers from intimate partner abuse, you likely have a story to tell. In 1976, a group of women volunteers recognized the need to confront intimate domestic partner abuse within Morris County. With determination and few resources, they set up a helpline and shelters within their own homes to help abused women, the primary victims at that time. The murder/ suicides of two victims brought greater awareness to their mission. From its humble beginnings, the Jersey Battered Women’s Services (JBWS) opened its first shelter in 1978.

Celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, JBWS is a non-profit public agency offering its services to Morris and Essex Counties. Their assistance is far-reaching with approximately 80 full-time staff members more than 200 volunteers, the organization endeavors to fulfill its mission of safety, support, and solutions for abuse victims.

Safety

As the needs for services and social issues have changed, JBWS has evolved to meet these challenges. Diane Williams, CEO of JBWS remarked, ”Accordingly, our commitment to being inclusive and welcoming to survivors regardless of gender identity prompted us in 2019 to change our name from Jersey Battered Women’s Service to JBWS, Safety, Support & Solutions to Abuse. We continued to pivot in 2020 when victims were trapped at home with their abusers during the pandemic, and although our helpline, shelter, and transitional housing remained open, we quickly transitioned to remote options for counseling, legal advocacy, and support services. Additionally, as we move into 2021, we continue to strive to provide quality services through the lens of racial justice.” Initial services are comprehensive to reach the community, with long- and short-term counseling and housing services for abuse survivors. First, for those in immediate crises, the first step is to contact the 24-hour hotline support (1-877-782-2873). (continued on 4)

Since housing insecurity is a growing concern in Morris County, JBWS and other leaders of Morris County’s nonprofit homeless shelters are working tirelessly with state officials to resolve this crisis. They urge the U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development to make transitional housing for these populations a priority. Safety is the first objective of JBWS. After discussing options through the hotline services, abuse victims may find shortterm housing. Arbour House is JBWS’ safe shelter.

The Morris Family Justice Center (MFJC) has provided services to thousands of victims and their children since March 2016. The MFJC is a collaboration of partner legal services in one place and is an evidence-based national model of the community’s response to domestic violence. In 2020, JBWS quickly transitioned to providing remote services to survivors and their families with over 335 individuals receiving 970 hours of support from center staff.

The event will include jewelry, designer handbags, home décor, wine baskets, gift cards, a vacation package with luggage, and more. Supporting Essential Workers and Local Restaurants Millburn/Short Hills FLAG Group Raises Over $100K During Pandemic

S

hort Hills residents Shannon Cross and her daughter Sydney, a senior at Millburn High School, went above and beyond during the pandemic to not only support essential workers but to support local restaurants too. The women established a group called Front-Line Appreciation Group (FLAG), which brought the Millburn/Short Hills community together in a very short period of time to raise over $100,000 and serve over 9,000 meals from April through August 2020. If all goes well, the women hope to initiate another push through April 2021, via a $100K—$200K grant they applied for that will help keep local restaurants afloat, since they are still operating at 35 percent capacity and are unable to offer outside seating until it gets warmer. “The experience was phenomenal,” says Shannon, who got the idea for the initiative after learning that morale was poor among the essential workers, from her son, Tyler, who was home from Cornell and volunteering as an EMT. Noting this and that there were a few grassroots FLAG groups popping up on Facebook, Shannon and Sydney went to work. They created a website, Facebook page and set up ways to handle donations. They also worked with local restaurants to create hearty $10 meals that provided a good margin for the establishments. “The money raised didn’t come in large chunks, although at times, a few local neighborhoods pooled funds together to donate $1,000 at a time,” says Shannon. “Rather, we received many donations of $25 and $50 at a time, which really began to add up, as well as donations from PTOs, synagogues, churches, the Scouts and more.”

12

Vicinity Magazine

“It was heartwarming,” says Shannon. “The whole community came together. Some of the chefs even wrote encouraging messages on the bags they sent out.” Shannon, who is on the board of Overlook hospital, began contacting local hospitals and quickly realized that while the larger ones were receiving meal donations, many of the smaller, under-represented institutions including University Hospital, in Newark, the VA hospital in East Orange, Clara Maas in Belleville and Mountainside in Bloomfield, were not. So, she and Sydney set their sights on sending them 100 - 200 meals a day. They also sent meals three times a week to Millburn’s first responders. March 2021

“The recipients were grateful for FLAG’s support,” says Shannon. “One head nurse at the VA hospital burst into tears when I contacted her.” Shannon says the meals not only supported doctors and nurses, but the respiratory therapists who were running bed to bed, the housekeeping and maintenance staffs, EMTs, First Aid Squads, 911 dispatchers, Kessler, and even the staff at the staging areas outside of the hospitals. “It was a lot of work, but so worthwhile,” says Shannon, who says she will hear any day now as to whether or not FLAG received a grant to help get restaurants over the winter hump. Then she and Sydney will get back to work.

Local Heroes Jake Garza of Madison paints to raise money to stock safe food aisles at the Interfaith Food Pantry in Morris Plains.

J

ake Garza, 17, of Madison, has been on a mission throughout the pandemic to help keep the food sensitive shelves stocked at the Morris Plains Interfaith Food Pantry. To do so, he created the Allergy Advocacy, Art, and Action initiative where he sells his art to purchase food for the pantry. “This project addresses the lack of awareness and often overlooked need for safe foods in pantries,” says his mom, Jan Garza. While homebound at the onset of the pandemic, Jake took up painting to help pass the time. After creating many works of art, his initiative was born. During middle school, Jake and his dad volunteered at the pantry and Jake “realized that if he ever needed assistance, he’d only be able to receive fruit and water because of his allergies.”

Jake donated 476 lbs. of food after selling his first 12 paintings, 350 lbs. with the next batch, and is now working on a third batch of paintings. In March, 2020, Jake went to Capitol Hill to lobby for the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education and Research (FASTER) Act, and says he plans to study food science and genetics, as related to food allergies, at college. “This initiative is very personal to Jake because his food allergies impact his everyday life, says his mom. “To see him trying to make a difference makes me really happy and proud.”

Health professionals say it is not uncommon for people to experience both good days and bad days. “I remind everyone that these days, you’re making up your coping skills as you go,” says Dr. Keith Morgen, Ph.D, LPC, Dr. Keith Morgen ACS, of Discovery Wellness Center in Morristown. “So it’s OK to have some not-so-great days. That may also mean you need support, whereas before the pandemic, perhaps you were more autonomous. That’s also OK.”

Dr. Morgen advises that, “if you feel distressed, seek out a mental health professional who can help you manage your emotions and thoughts.” Other helpful tips for coping during the pandemic include getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods and exercising. In addition, staying connected with supportive family members, friends and colleagues can be beneficial. Dr. Morgen welcomes anyone needing help to call for an appointment or more information about the services provided for individuals and families. To ensure everyone’s safety, virtual appointments by phone or video are available. “We have made it our responsibility and have taken multiple steps to minimize health risks to our staff and clients while still being able to provide for therapeutic needs. We are all in this together and we look forward to keeping contact with you during this period of distance. Feel free to call today for any inquiries or appointments.”

This Year, Having the

BACKYARD of Your DREAMS Will Be All the Rage!

I

f 2020 is any indication of how many people will be investing in their backyards in 2021—there will be a lot according to Ion Colbasiuc, owner of Deck Guardian. With the onset of COVID, Deck Guardian, which specializes in building maintenance-free decks, upgrading and resurfacing existing decks and installing gazebos, patios, porches and Louvered Roofing Systems, built over 400 decks, and expects the numbers to be even higher in 2021. Colbasiuc suggests that anyone looking to enhance their backyard this summer, should start planning now, so as to avoid having to wait too long for appointments once spring and summer arrive. All new decks require multiple permits, a process that takes time to approve and adds to the timeline, and that even purchasing materials takes time, especially in light of the pandemic.

“These days, now that social distancing and visiting with friends and family outdoors is the new norm, having a deck or outside space is more essential than ever,” says Colbasiuc. “Decks provide a great addition to the house by creating an extra room and by adding the space everyone needs to be able to use and enjoy outdoors.” Colbasiuc, who launched Deck Guardian in 2015, after spending 10 years in the industry, says Deck Guardian provides top-notch service and addresses the needs of all homeowners – those with small projects and those with large, elaborate ones too. In addition, Deck Guardian is dedicated to using the most innovative technologies to deliver unique long-last decks.

He adds that Deck Guardian partners with trusted decking brands including Trex, Azek, and Fiberon, and employs innovative construction methods like the use of steel helical piers that have three to five times more load capacities than traditional cement. Colbasiuc says these manufacturers have revolutionized the decking industry and offer materials that withstand the weather elements for up to 25, even 30 years with little maintenance. These relationships enable Deck Guardian to provide clients with a great value on their investment, as well as great warranties on all builds. “When we complete a project, our clients are amazed at how beautiful and durable the finished project is,” says Colbasiuc.

VOLUNTEERISM: Teaching Kids

CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY

Offers Rewards for All

By Kimberly Blaker

V

olunteering is an excellent way for families to make a difference in their communities and offers lots of benefits to those who volunteer their time and skills. First and foremost, nothing is more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life. What’s more, volunteering raises kids’ sense of civic responsibility. It also makes for an excellent family bonding and skill-building experience as well as socialization opportunity for kids and adults alike.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry. At a soup kitchen, you can help prepare and serve a meal or do kitchen cleanup. For a food pantry, help with stocking or putting together food baskets for families in need. Some pantries also need delivery assistance since many lowincome families don’t have transportation to pick up their food supply. Help out at an animal shelter. Offer to spend an afternoon walking dogs or playing with cats. You can transport a pet to a new home, clean kennels, donate supplies, or help find loving homes through social media. Animal rescues are always in need of families to foster homeless pets. Adopt a road or park for cleanup. Most states have adopt-a-highway programs. These typically require a signed contract for a period of 2 to 4 years with a promise to clean up a designated area 2 to 4 times a year. Alternatively, you could pick an unsightly city street and head out to clean up the debris. kids, park cleanup is a safer option. Paint a park bench. Contact your city hall or parks and recreation department, and request permission to freshen up a bench. If your family is artistic, ask if you may do something creative to make it more cheerful.

Innovative Door-to-Door Mobile Service for Children’s Car Seats and Strollers Delivers Sparkling Results! BuckleBath’s Mission is to Clean Your Child’s Mess!

By Jessica Modrow, photos by Celestina Ando Photography

T

he everyday hustle and bustle of parenthood often leaves little time for “extra” chores—like a good deep cleaning of your children’s car seats and strollers. Unfortunately, skipping out on a good scrub can lead to a build-up of bacteria and grime from old snacks and spills that can impact your kids’ health. In fact, studies have shown that dirty car seats can have more germs than a toilet seat! But how can busy parents find the time to roll up their sleeves and safely clean these seats?

Cue BuckleBath: the one-stop shop innovative mobile business for children’s car seat and stroller cleaning. “I designed the business to solve the messy problem of unsanitary car seats with a focus on convenience, white glove service and high-quality work,” said owner Lauren Siclare. “The solid dirt is gross, and the liquid mess is disgusting--and both are unhealthy. Innovative Door-to-Door Mobile Service for Children’s Car Seats and Strollers Delivers Sparkling Results! (continued from page 24)

Time is of the essence for parents, and a car seat or stroller out of commission for a few days is a huge hindrance. With BuckleBath, appointments take roughly 40 minutes per item: cleaning associates drive to the clients’ house and cleans the gear right in their driveway, so they do not have to take the car seats out. For major messes including upset tummies and diaper blowouts, they offer a deep cleaning that is available for contactless pick up from clients’ driveways with a 24-hour turnaround time. The company offers car seat loaners as an added convenience. Reservations are taken online or over the phone, so everything is coordinated in advance—helping parents to make a stressful task obsolete. Safety is of the utmost important to Siclare, who is a licensed car seat technician. “I went through a long, four-day course to understand how car seats should be cleaned and installed,” she explained. For instance, harsh chemicals should not be used as they can loosen the fibers on the straps. “We abide by car seat manufacturer’s guidelines and the team is fully trained.” Bucklebath’s

pediatrician consultant, Dr. Allen Friedland added, “Using the proper car seats in the proper way for the proper duration is critically important to keeping our children safe.” As far as proper cleaning he states, “I will stick to teaching about the importance of using car seats safely and let cleaning professionals like BuckleBath deal with the mess.” And how does BuckleBath get things looking so spotless? “We have specialized tools that most parents don’t have that safely clean underneath the car seat covers and cushions,” said Siclare. For surfaces, they use a non-toxic, all-natural plant-based cleaner. “And we have a safe way of sanitizing—a secret sauce that does not use chemicals.”

Charlie Osborne with mom, Janine Osborne

The price per cleaning for a BuckleBath is $57.25 and a BioBath is $107.00, plus there are discounted subscription packages for multiple cleanings. Siclare recommends getting a cleaning at least once a quarter. “That’s not including long family road trips, potty training periods, and kids who get carsick on a regular basis,” added Siclare. BuckleBath is offering readers a discount: use code VANITYANDBUCKLEBATH. If this sounds like your dream business, Siclare is offering franchise opportunities. The company is also partnering with daycares to offer a cleaning day to daycare directors in an effort to keep children riding healthier. “We are incredibly grateful that we have an amazing team and awesome community of parents, grandparents and day care directors who highly recommend our service,” said Siclare. “We love our customers and work hard every day to keep them raving about our services.”

f your child is an effective communicator and a natural born leader, they may have what it takes to be an amazing teacher. However, a love of learning is fundamental to a career in education. Here are a few ways to cultivate a passion for learning and put this rewarding career path on your child’s radar: • Be a good role model: Whether it’s checking out library books and watching documentaries or pursuing an advanced degree, you can serve as role model by demonstrating the ways that learning can and should be a lifelong pursuit. • Be understanding: School is not always going to be easy. Avoid punishments and other negative consequences for less than stellar grades. Such an approach is unlikely going to motivate your child to work harder and may only backfire. Instead, start a conversation and find out what’s going on. There could be a larger issue causing the setback. • Make learning fun: You can help make sure that learning never feels like a chore by giving your child the space and tools to explore topics of interest to them. For example, if your child wants to learn to play a musical instrument, check out new tools that make the process

fun and easy. For example, the range of keyboards available from Casio have built-in learning tools and also connect to the Chordana Play app, which can help budding musicians quickly take their skills to the next level. With the option to add any MIDI file into the app, your child can select the exact songs they want to learn. • Encourage peer-to-peer tutoring: Is your child excelling in a particular subject? Encourage them to help out classmates who may be struggling in the same area. Whether they volunteer their time bringing friends up to speed or turn it into a business, this is an excellent way for your child to hone instructional skills. When it comes to math and science, free online resources can help them dial in their own grasp of the material and get started tutoring. Check out Casio’s education resource page, which features lesson plans and webinars -- useful tools for students and educators of all ages. To access these resources, visit casioeducation.com. Today’s students are tomorrow’s teachers. By instilling a love of learning in your child, you may spark their interest in the field of education. —StatePoint photo: (c) ismagilov / iStock via Getty Images Plus

LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER PRESENTS

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit

T

hrough immersive experiences children ages 2 to 6 collaborate to solve problems, use their imaginations to transform their surroundings and play along with Daniel’s singable strategies as they learn life’s little lessons. The exhibit replicates adventures of four-year-old Daniel and his friends and includes immersive activities such as an Imagination Stage— where kids can put costumes of the beloved characters and step onto the stage to act; The Music Shop—where children can express themselves creatively through unusual instruments; The Post Office—where they can sort, deliver and receive packages and letters; and a Thank You Tree—where visitors can write or draw thank-you notes and put them on the neighborhood tree. “Communication, imagination and exploring one’s emotions are critical to the learning process, especially in this pandemic when many children are being educated either remotely or in a hybrid system and isolated from friends and distant family members,” said LSC President and CEO Paul Hoffman. “That’s why we are thrilled to welcome such a relevant and immersive exhibit.

At the Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: a Grr-ific Exhibit children can: • Create stories through the Movable Character Mural • Step inside the Clock Factory to play with a variety of clocks • Compose a song or play along with one-of-a-kind instruments • Identify spots in one’s own neighborhood on the interactive world map • Cozy up with a good book in O the Owl’s Reading Nest • Stroll with a Trolley along the path, and ring the bell upon arrival “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit” brings to life the themes presented in the PBS series such as community, communication and emotions, which enables young children to understand their feelings and those of their neighbors. Visitors can walk the paths and hear the sounds of Daniel’s world as they encounter the meaning of empathy, gratitude, sharing and diversity in an environment of creative and interactive play. Through music, kids can also sing along with Daniel, work together to solve problems and even experience the contagious nature of kindness. Going Outside the Boundaries of Your Home By Susan Baldani

W

ith people spending more time at home now than ever before, the desire to expand one’s living spaces is in high demand. Homeowners want to create an oasis for themselves and their families not only inside their homes, but outside as well. Andrew Braverman, a builder with over 18 years of experience in the state of NJ and president of KMF Companies, a boutique luxury builder, has seen a heightened interest in pools and patios. “One of the things we found with COVID is that people are putting more of an investment into their homes,” he says. “Because they’re spending more time there, they want to enjoy the various aspects of it, and want to get as much year-round use as possible.” For luxury patio areas, almost all are being done with blue stone, and have at least one fire pit and a covered area. Outdoor lounges, with a kitchen and bar featuring multiple televisions, are also highly sought after. For luxury pools, the most popular are Hampton-style rectangular pools with sun shelves and automatic covers, which keep warmth in and also add an element of safety.

While doing a project, KFM is with you from the very beginning to the amazing end. “What we have found is unique in this area, in terms of luxury lifestyle living, is that a lot of the onus will fall on a homeowner to help manage their vision,” says Andrew. “There are not many contractors that will do everything for you like KMF.”

Women’s History Month Allows Us to Honor Remarkable Women of Today and Remember Those That Paved the Way

W

omen’s History Month, which takes place during the whole month of March, is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. It has been observed annually in the US since 1987. Celebrating women for a whole month provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the amazing contributions of women like Abigail Addams, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Kamala Harris and so many other remarkable women who have greatly impacted US history. It also lends itself to honoring and celebrating women making a difference today, locally.

From 1993 until her death in 2020, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second female justice, and the first Jewish female justice on the Supreme Court. She provided a strong voice in favor of gender equality, the rights of workers and the separation of church and state.

It wasn’t so long ago that women didn’t have the right to vote, but look at how far women have come since this was attained on August 8, 1920. There is now a woman serving as the Vice President of the US, in the White House. This is an accomplishment that the women who fought for the right to vote could never have dreamed of, yet, through their blood, sweat and tears, they led the way for it to happen. Today, Vice President Kamala Harris is an inspiration to all women, especially to little girls, who have now learned that anything is possible as a woman. It also wasn’t so long ago that women couldn’t go to college, which is something unfathomable to the empowered women of today, who are doctors, lawyers, CEOs, professors, scientists, politicians, and businesswomen. Without the efforts of the strong women who came before us, competing for the same jobs and wages as men would not be achievable today. In fact, according to Biz Journal, “every board of directors in the S&P 500 now has a woman on the board; and, as a result of the 2020 election, women now make up a quarter of all members of the 117th Congress.” Women have also made huge contributions to culture as artists, writers, actors, dancers, chefs, and so much more, leaving their marks on the world through their passions. We study them in school and learning about their set-backs and achievements helps to propel women of today to dream and achieve the impossible.

Kamala Devi Harris is serving as the 49th vice president of the United States. She is not only the first female US vice president, she is also the first African American and first Asian American vice president.

Led by Medical Director Linda Sanders, MD, and breast imaging specialists, Avani Mehta, MD, and Nicole M. Polini, MD, patients can be assured of a high level of individualized care from a multidisciplinary, highly qualified team, experienced in treating breast-related issues. Together, these fellowship-trained physicians share a common goal of exceeding the individual expectations of each patient, decreasing the stress commonly associated with breast testing and promoting breast health and wellness. The services include a variety of screening and diagnostic procedures for detecting breast cancer and pinpointing other suspicious areas in the breast. The Center is undergoing a complete redesign, including the placement of a dedicated breast MRI, to deliver comprehensive outpatient breast imaging in one beautiful location. The Breast Center at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center is one of the few in New Jersey to receive accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). This accreditation reflects the high standard of care provided to our patients with diseases of the breast. (973) 322-5800

Don’t get discouraged if you lose out on a deal, learn from it. CLIMB TO THE TOP “Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.” — Andy Rooney, CBS Barry Farber

C

huck Garcia has a unique background and experience to talk about a climb to the top. He is an Amazon Best Selling Author of “A Climb to the TOP,” a radio host, a professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Engineering, climbed mountains on four continents including Africa’s highest peak (Kilimanjaro) and Europe’s highest peak (Mount Elbrus), and was the 190th employee at Bloomberg as head of sales and a public spokesman traveling to 30 countries with hundreds of speaking engagements,

do to bring my friends and colleagues back to life, it was a catalyst for my own change. Mountain climbing came to me as a result of my own initiative to use the sad and tragic events of 911 to encourage myself to do something in the spirit of these people that I had lost. I decided then and there that I was going to climb a mountain and see if it was something that would speak to me for my own personal change. Exactly one year later I stood on the summit of Mount Rainier and it changed everything I thought about the world and myself.

Barry Farber: How did you get into mountain climbing?

BF: What did you learn from mountain climbing that applies to your professional life and personal life?

Chuck Garcia:I was scheduled to speak on 911 at 3pm in the World Trade Center and never made it into the building. Unfortunately, on my way to the building the tower had collapsed and three of my colleagues from Bloomberg, who were in the building as a result of supporting my speech, never made it out. That caused me to have a moment of incredible selfreflection. While there was nothing I could

CG: It felt like a metaphor for the way that I climbed my own career. As I was ascending or descending the mountains, I was thinking how grateful I was as I went through struggles, hardships and unexpected twists and turns just like a career. However, so much generosity was given and received from everyone on the climbing team all in the service to unify our efforts to achieve our goals. That’s

mountain climbing, that’s career climbing and that’s life. BF: What are three pieces of advice you could give the readers? CG: Given the amount of fear and anxiety that is in the world, my first piece of advice is never ever be afraid to make a mistake but always be afraid of never learning from them. Second, do not strive for perfection but always strive for progress. And my third piece of advice that I have learned myself and from some of the guests on my program is that there is no failure, there is only feedback. Failure is a mindset; feedback is the development of your mindset. BF: What is your definition of success today? CG: Success is when somebody wakes up every morning and recognizes how fortunate they are to do whatever it is they set out to do. BF: What is the greatest piece of advice you received from one of your mentors? CG: Mike Bloomberg once said to me; “Garcia, if you’re not making mistakes you’re not working hard enough.” At that very moment he gave me permission to go out and try and screw things up. He was the one that drove into my head to adjust and adapt and not worry about the mistakes...just get climbing. Adjustments are the difference between mediocrity and achievement. Chuck’s training regimen: Best training for mountain climbing is the C L M B R - a full body cardio and strength fitness machine. I also do strength training 2-3 times per week “Lift heavy things and then put them down” along with boxing and running.
