“I WAS TIRED OF LIVING WITH MY FIBROMYALGIA PAIN”
Fibromyalgia has been difficult to treat and even more difficult to understand, UNTIL NOW! Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc, provides patients with much needed relief from Fibro symptoms!
If you have Fibromyalgia, you understand this sentiment all too well. Local resident Elizabeth N. found herself at a turning point when she noticed her diagnosis had started to take a toll on her marriage. “I was angry all the time because of all the things I couldn’t do anymore because of my Fibromyalgia. That anger cycled through to depression and affected everyone around me, my husband, more than anyone. It made our lives miserable.” Fibromyalgia affects the entire body. To make things complicated, it affects everyone’s body a little differently. To complicate things further, the effects of Fibromyalgia can change daily. Sometimes you’re plagued with wide-spread muscle pain and fatigue, and other days it’s a headache and heightened sensitivity to touch.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain in muscles and tissues rather than inflammation of the joints, muscles, and tissues. Then your primary care doctors suggest dietary changes, pain liniments and, prescription medications to the point where Fibromyalgia no longer rules your life. Instead, it’s ruled by a problematic routine and pill regimen that is supposed to help to avoid flare-ups. Elizabeth put it this way, “My life was no longer my own.” Eventually, Elizabeth did her own research and discovered that acupuncture can improve the quality of life in Fibro patients. Determined to find the best in the business, she discovered Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine led by Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc.
These are some examples of what it’s like to suffer from Fibromyalgia. Symptoms make everyday life incredibly difficult. Mundane, daily tasks are nearly impossible.
Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc has been successfully treating difficult to manage chronic pain cases for over a decade. She uses the time-tested science of acupuncture and integrates it with modern medical advancements that encourage healing and recovery. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that is commonly used to reduce various forms of pain.
And too often, these symptoms are only made worse because practitioners find it challenging to understand and even more troublesome to treat. For example,
Acupuncture works by reducing inflammation, stimulating the release of endorphins and offers much needed, effective symptom relief for Fibromyalgia.
“I could barely stand to have even the weight of bedsheets touching me, much less a hug from my husband,” explains Elizabeth.
Then Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc skillfully layers other non invasive therapies like ATP BioResonance Therapy™ and O3 Regenerative Therapy™ for amplified, long-lasting results. “I feel like a new person. My husband comes with me to my appointments. He spends most of it thanking Aleksandra for giving him back the woman he married. And for the first time since we moved here, one of my neighbors told me I looked great! It’s a miracle she was able to reduce my Fibro symptoms, I don’t know how else to explain it.” If you’re looking for a therapist and a practice who not only understands your diagnosis but also has a proven solution for chronic pain, look no further than Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. Elizabeth describes Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine almost as enthusiastically as she does their treatments. “I love it here!” Additional information about Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine and their various treatments can be found by visiting www.SashaAcupuncture.com. Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc is now accepting new patients, in her Montclair, NJ office. Please call 973-444-8932 to take advantage of their new patient offer.

Inside Essex By Jackie Schatell
Livingston Author Pens Seventh Children’s Book
A
riel Bernstein of Livingston has written her 7th children’s book, “We Love Fishing,” illustrated by Marc Rosenthal (Simon & Schuster). It is her third picture book. She has also written a chapter book series for children, “Warren and Dragon,” illustrated by Mike Malbrough (Penguin Random House). She has another picture book coming out in 2023. “We Love Fishing” is for babies through children who are 8. It is a humorous tale of animal friends who go fishing, but not everyone loves fishing. It teaches a lesson of how sometimes you can do things you don’t love to do in order to spend time with friends. Ariel says she got the idea when looking at old photos of a camping trip she went on when she was young, where everyone is smiling, but she has a scowl on her face. She loves being a children’s book author and getting to meet young readers in person at school visits and book festivals. For more information, please go to arielbernsteinbooks.com.
Verona Resident Donates Class Proceeds to Help Ukraine
J
ennifer DeShazer of Verona donated all of the proceeds from her Peace for Ukraine Quilt course to the Tivka Children’s Home, which helps children evacuated from Odessa become safe. Attendees each paid $75 for the class and made small 5” x 7” mini quilts representing the Ukraine, which can be put into protective mailers and sent as postcards. They look like the Ukrainian Flag with the word ‘Peace’ written in Cyrillic. Jennifer says she is putting hers up on her front door to show support for the people of the Ukraine. She says that she “feels good to be able to do something constructive and to work with others to do so.” She added, “Also, I have a classmate living in Kiev, so this was a project close to my heart.” Sew Léana in S. Orange donated the space for the class.
Verona Resident to Compete in the Irish Dancing World Championships
V
erona resident, Kaitlyn Keane, age 23, who has been Irish dancing since she was 4, is one of 17 dancers from her school, DeNogla Academy, going to the Irish Dancing World Championships in Belfast Ireland to compete. She says there hasn’t been a World Championship since 2019 because of Covid. Kaitlyn is the second oldest perfomer going and will retire after competing. She says Irish dancing is like Riverdance. “You have to keep your arms by your side the whole time and wear costumes and wigs,” she says. In order to qualify, dancers must be in the top ten percent for their age group at Regionals/Nationals. Kaitlyn’s group won Regionals. The top 20 percent at Worlds get awards and sashes and the top five percent will be invited to dance a last round and attend the award ceremony. “I am really excited,” says Kaitlyn. “We have worked really hard throughout the pandemic, seven days a week, four hours a day.”

Livingston Residents Start Mother-Daughter Charitable Group By Jackie Schatell
W
hen Sally Hua and her family moved to Livingston from California, she, and her daughter, Elizabeth Hua, 15, missed being members of the National Charity League, so they started the first chapter in NJ. The goal of the National Charity League is for mothers and daughters in grades 7 to 12 to bond while doing charitable work together. The North Jersey Chapter serves Essex and Morris counties. According to the website, The National Charity League volunteers nearly three million hours to over 6,000 charities, creating a national annual $78 million philanthropic impact through 292 chapters in 32 states with 200,000 members and alumni. The vision is “connecting hearts, hands and minds so that every community thrives. The mission is “fostering the motherdaughter relationship through an ongoing commitment to philanthropy, culture, and leadership. The “program empowers women to succeed as confident, well-rounded contributors to society, while making a positive impact in the communities they serve.” They welcome females or individuals who identify as female. The core values are: strengthening the mother-daughter bond; empowering women with the skills and confidence to mentor and lead; inspiring a legacy of social awareness and compassion; providing depth of support in local communities; honoring a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and modeling integrity, graciousness, and excellence. Sally says that her daughter was the one that brought up the idea of starting the NJ Chapter. “She missed the bonding we did together through philanthropy,” said Sally.
Sally Hua and her daughter, Elizabeth
They now have 87 members and have volunteered at places like the Food Bank of Newark, and Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Livingston, and they participated in Clean Up NJ. “I love being able to volunteer with my daughter and teach her about philanthropy. I also love spending time with her this way,” said Sally. “It is a way to show compassion to our kids.”
Since the pandemic, finding places to go to in person has been difficult. Sally is looking for organizations that need help. She also has plans for her chapter to go to a senior citizen home to spend time with the residents and do arts and crafts. To find out more, or to join the North Jersey Chapter, go to membershipnorthnj@nclonline.org

Teen Holds Supply Collection Drive for the Ukrainian People By Jackie Schatell
M
arina Chernin of Livingston, a high school junior at Newark Academy, has a strong connection to what is happening in the Ukraine. Her mother grew up there and her dad is from Russia, and she has been hearing stories about the rich cultures of both nations since she was little. They have friends still in the region and have heard over the past months directly about the horrors taking place during the invasion—about the destruction of landmarks, homes, and, most importantly, families. “My mom and my grandparents have been telling me stories about Ukraine for as long as I can remember; I feel a connection to the nation and its people,” said Marina. “When I learned about the innocent people whose lives were being uprooted, I felt I needed to do something to help, to show everyone around me that they could help too.” When the war began, Marina “felt a moral imperative to help.” She decided to organize a drive to collect supplies to be sent to aid the Ukrainian people. Her collection ran until May 1st, and she received over 1,000 items. She asked for mittens, warm socks, medicine, sleeping pads, blankets and more. “People were so generous,” she said. She put up posts about her collection on social media and wrote an opinion piece for NJ.com with the drop off delivery location. An article about her collection that ran in the Patch inspired a local preschool to do a collection of their own too. She said, “It has been heartwarming to see the community come out in full force to support this drive. Everyone has been incredibly thoughtful, compassionate, and generous, and it makes me proud to live in New Jersey.”

A SUMMER TRADITION Loads of Fun and Games at the State Fair Meadowlands By Sue Baldani, photos by Phil Hoops (ig: @hoopsapproved)
T
he annual State Fair Meadowlands is back and better than ever. Get together with family and friends between June 23 and July 10 for a fun and memorable time.
“Pay one affordable price and everything’s included, except the food,” says Al Dorso, owner of the State Fair Group “And it’s so easy to buy a ticket—you can do it right through your phone and avoid the lines at the box office.” It’s also cheaper to buy tickets in advance, and parking is free too.
Teens and adults will love the rides, like the Ski Lift, thrilling roller coasters, a 120-foot gondola wheel and more. For the little kids, there’s 35 rides in Kiddie Land just for them. There’s a big petting zoo as well, and tons of games to play. Of course, there’s also amazing food. “In the past couple of years, we’ve made a big push to offer different kinds of foods,” he says. “There’s a great Mexican concession this year, fantastic Greek food, and Puerto Rican food from Taino’s Kitchen in Newark.” With eight different shows every day, there’s something for everyone. “The hypnotist and the racing pigs are two staples—people love them,” says Dorso. “This year, we’ve added an illusionist and a magic show. We also have Jurassic Kingdom Lockdown, Cycle Circus, the BIG BEE Transforming Car and others.” Enjoy!

Amicable Solutions
CIPRIANO LAW OFFICES MEDIATES PARENTING DISPUTES By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein
M
elissa Cipriano is firm about the focus of her family law practice. “It’s about the children,” she said. She answered questions about some of services her West Caldwell office provides.
What help can your firm offer to non-married parents experiencing issues? We can mediate, helping work things out before it has to be litigated. This includes issues such as custody, child support, parenting time, who pays for what. During the pandemic, many more people have chosen to go to trial, but this is often not the best solution.
The firm also assists those divorcing. What does that entail? We often receive referrals to mediate. Sometimes, this involves couples amicable enough to prefer mediation themselves. Other times, a court orders them to mediate.
First, we determine what the basic issues are, and determine how long a process this is likely to be. These days, 90 percent of mediations are on Zoom. These are very successful and much cheaper.
You can act as a “parenting coordinator.” What does that mean? I don’t represent either party in the dispute, and I can speak with the children. If the parents can agree on solutions, they tend to abide by them. This can greatly reduce the stress on the children. Cipriano Law Offices offers phone, video or in-person consultations. Wrote one client: “Melissa, Anna and the team at Cipriano Law Offices are a perfect example of professionalism.”

House of Dezign Fosters Fashion Designers of All Ages continued from previous page
House of Dezign founder, Roya Ranjbar, dreamed of having a fashion career early in childhood. After completing a seven-year fashion program, Ranjbar went on to work with brands including Chanel and Anne Fontaine. Now, she’s fostering the growth of generations of designers. “I’m eager to share my passion for and extensive experience with fashion to inspire young, creative minds,” said Ranjbar. “My classes allow learners to explore and develop their ideas in a safe, nurturing, calm, and focused environment.” The courses at House of Dezign are designed with the success of its students in mind, with clear, easyto-follow, yet thorough instructions. Throughout the various programs, students will learn fundamental skills from developing moodboards and sketching ideas to pattern making and sewing their own garments. These courses also delve into fashion history and etiquette to bolster students’ background knowledge. House of Dezign has a broad range of programs to choose from. One-on-one private lessons are available to students of all ages and skill levels. For kids ages six through 12, there is a “Dezign with Me” class that includes the child and a caregiver, as well as a Basics of Sewing program and a one-week kids’ summer camp! Teens ages 13 through 17 have programs including Basics of Sewing levels one and two; a one-week summer fashion workshop; and a two-week portfolio development. For adults, additional classes include a BYOB Sip & Sew event, as well as a course that guides designers on upcycling (taking existing garments and re-imagining them).
design. All lovers of fashion (or creating) are welcome! “Fashion design is about releasing and cultivating your creative spirit,” said Ranjbar. “It’s a safe place for anyone to express themselves.”
Importantly, the courses at House of Dezign are not just for those hoping to pursue a career in fashion

— MIKE PETERS —
Truth In The Faces of Others
Fast Food, Newark Penn Station
Art of Essex
In Waiting For The Race, Wall Speedway, Peters finds himself at a favorite haunt where, like in Cheers, everyone seems to know everyone else. “Places like this are all over America,” he says, “but not so much in New Jersey.” Too many people are so calculated in everything about how they look, he thinks, here he can photograph “folks who are comfortable with themselves, and this place is so much about that”. This fellow is simply waiting for the race to start. Every Fourth of July since 9/11 finds Peters in Ridgefield Park, where he photographs people at the longest-running parade in New Jersey. “It’s like Middle America, but three miles from Manhattan. The patriotism is refreshingly honest.” Man With Drum, Ridgefield Park, is a participant that he’s been seeing each time for years. This is Peters’ favorite portrait of him. Peters grew up in Kearny, NJ, a few blocks away from Connolly’s Bar. One of those neighborhood places without even a sign, that everyone knows in towns like Kearny. As an adult, in 2009, Peters decided to finally go in for a look. He was waited on at the bar by the owner, and made her portrait on traditional film with a Hasselblad camera. Mrs. Connolly, Kearny, NJ “As an artist, all I have to offer is my point of view, and I feel it’s my obligation to share it,” Peters tells us. And we’re glad he does. With his camera, he creates in-depth biographies, novel-length, but encapsulated within one square frame. Visit his website for much more of his romance with strangers, and their stories which very often are nothing short of evocative.
Mike Peters MikePeters-Photography.com June 2022
Mrs. Connolly, Kearny, NJ
As a child, Peters made many trips with his grandfather to the Jersey Shore by way of Newark Penn Station. “It looks much as it did when I was a young boy. I always felt a rush of excitement being there as it was my portal to and from another world” he says. “When I go the Penn Station, I feel close to my grandfather. I go there to make photographs of all the people that I saw as a child. Of course they are different now, but in a way they are the same.” Here, in Fast Food, Newark Penn Station, we find a McDonalds worker, who is, as Peters puts it: “Lost in her own moment.” He loves it when “all pretense falls away and they are completely themselves. It’s as human as they get.”
Waiting For The Race, Wall Speedway
F
or decades Bloomfield resident Mike Peters has been photographing absolute strangers, and in the process seems to be able to see into their very souls. While just as Batman is sometimes Bruce Wayne, for twenty two years Peters has been the official photographer for Montclair State University; it seems like from wherever you are on campus, you’ll be able to some of his work on view which is always able to capture the verve and drama of life on a college campus. But it’s in his personal projects we see the magic of his perception. He returns often, in some cases yearly, for decades, to places looking for people to photograph, whose stories he can tell with his camera.

Whether you’re dining outdoors, going for a swim, sweating out a bike ride or just spending a few moments soaking up some sun, it’s important to ensure you’re taking care of your body so you can enjoy those rays all season long.
Half-page 4C: 3.6875" x 9.75"
Stay Hydrated As an important aspect of overall health, staying hydrated also helps maintain your skin’s water content. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially as temperatures rise and you spend more time outdoors. Another delicious way to avoid dehydration—leading to energy drain, in mild cases—is to eat fruits and vegetables with high water content. One example is watermelon, which is 92% water and can help restore fluids.

Prioritize Skin Protection Whether you’ll be in the sun for a few minutes or a few hours, it’s paramount to protect skin by applying sunscreen. On days when the UV index is 3 or higher, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends applying a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 15 or higher. Another option is to wear light, loose clothing that covers as much of the skin as possible while staying comfortable in the heat.

Refresh Your Face As one of the parts of the body that sees the most sun exposure, your face is perhaps the most important area to care for during the sunnier months. An at-home, allnatural DIY facial offers a brightening, hydrating way to treat yourself. For a true glow-up from the comfort of your own home, try this quick and easy solution: Mix 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt (to help exfoliate and purify) with 1 tablespoon of watermelon juice (for hydration). Apply the mask to your face and neck for 10 minutes then rinse off and pat your skin dry.
Keep Your Whole Body in Mind While your face is likely to see a lot of sun, that shouldn’t mean neglecting the rest of your body. This gentle body scrub can give you that glow you’re looking for with a sweet, fruity scent.
At Sunrise of Livingston, you’ll experience the very best in care, a delicious dining program, and a robust calendar of activities when our community opens in late 2022. Be among the first to reserve a suite to lock in your rate and receive exclusive Founders Club benefits, including: •
Two-year suite rate lock

Here’s how to exfoliate and polish your skin: Combine 1 1/2 cups of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1/4 cup of watermelon juice. If you’d like, add 1 teaspoon of microplaned watermelon rind zest and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Store the scrub in an airtight container up to 1 week and, when you shower, gently rub a handful of scrub on your skin then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Tips for Supporting
BRAIN HEALTH
A
s you get older, you might take steps to develop healthy habits, whether exercising, eating healthier or limiting your consumption of alcohol. But did you know that there are steps you can take to help with your brain health? Such preventive measures might even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s—and the good news is, you might be doing these things anyway, like working on puzzles or trying to get a good night’s sleep. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. In fact, someone in the United States develops the disease every 65 seconds, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. More than 6 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s—a number now projected to reach 7.2 million by 2025. Along with learning more about the disease, these five simple steps could possibly improve brain health, reduce risk of disease and help delay the potential onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia.

it’s crossword puzzles, reading or painting, keeping your brain mentally stimulated may help keep it young.
Stay social. Isolation or loneliness in older adults is associated with a 50% increased risk of developing dementia and a 26% increased risk of all-cause mortality, according to the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Engaging in activity clubs can help you increase your social interaction and help you stay active.
Make healthier lifestyle choices. Studies show moderate
exercise can help improve brain function, especially in the areas responsible for learning and memory. Improving these parts of the brain may fight preAlzheimer’s changes often seen in midlife. Talk to your health plan about fitness programs that may be available at no additional cost. Other lifestyle choices, like eating a healthy diet, may also help reduce cardiovascular risk while helping to slow brain aging.
Manage chronic illnesses.
Common diseases in older adults, such as diabetes and heart disease, may affect brain function. Talk with your health care provider about treatment plans to help you manage chronic conditions. In addition to these five steps, it is important to have a memory screening completed each year. Having a record of your brain function year to year may help your health care practitioner diagnose memory disorders earlier.
Memory screenings can be performed during your Annual Wellness Visit, which is free to anyone on Medicare. Make sure to ask your physician to perform a memory evaluation the next time you visit the doctor’s office. UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members can also take advantage of the HouseCalls program, which offers an annual health and wellness visit in the convenience and privacy of your home, at no additional cost. A HouseCalls licensed practitioner can conduct a memory screening and refer you to additional care, if needed. If you feel like you or a loved one might be suffering from symptoms of dementia, contact your health care provider. —BPT

Tips for Recognizing
RIPE FRUITS

eeping fresh fruit around the house provides a healthier alternative when your sweet tooth comes calling. Understanding how and when to buy at the peak of ripeness (or just before, in some cases) can help you avoid food waste while keeping your doctor happy. Consider these simple tips for recognizing ripe fruits:
STRAWBERRIES: Check the area at the top of the berry near the stem and leaves. A ripe strawberry is fully red; green or white near the top means the fruit is underripe. WATERMELON: The “field spot,” or the area where the melon sat on the ground, should be yellow, and a tap on the rind should produce a hollow sound. CHERRIES: Flesh should appear dark with a crimson color
and feel firm.
BLUEBERRIES: Similar to cherries, color should deepen to dark blue. A reddish or pink color may be visible in unripe berries. BLACKBERRIES: Look for a smooth texture without any red appearance. Because blackberries don’t ripen after being picked, they tend to spoil quickly. CANTALOUPE: You should detect a sweet smell, and the

RASPBERRIES: Generally follow the same rules as blackberries. Best eaten within a couple days of purchase, a bright red color represents ripe berries. BANANAS: A ripe banana features a peel lightly spotted without significant bruising. Your best bet may be to purchase bananas still slightly green and allow them to ripen at home. THE SENSIBAND INVENTED BY LOCAL NEW JERSEYANS
S
pine surgeon Mitchell Reiter, MD, who grew up in Livingston and now resides in Bernardsville, and his business partner Mark Drzala, MD, of Harding have invented the Sensiband, which is a wearable device that helps detect what metals a person is allergic to before they undergo surgery. The product launched in March and costs $100. “We kept the price low to make it affordable to everyone,” says Dr. Reiter. “Three of my four children have food allergies, so I am very attuned to allergies,” he says. “Over the years, I began noticing that some orthopedic and dental patients experienced persistent pain, rashes, or fatigue after implant surgery and I started putting the pieces together that they might be experiencing delayed type hypersensitivity reactions to the metals that were implanted,” he adds. “The Sensiband allows people to become their own advocates,” he says. “They can tell their doctors before surgery that they are allergic to particular metals allowing the surgeons to avoid implanting those metals during surgery.”

About
The Silverstrom Group While the high-tech office of the family-run Silverstrom Group may speak for itself, the full-service practice takes the utmost pride in being what Dr. Gary Silverstrom describes as a “high-touch” team of well-trained, wellappointed specialists, started by his father, David, 45 years ago. “It’s not just one person’s opinion, it’s an entire team’s opinion—it’s 10 people coming together to develop the best possible plan for every single patient who walks through the door,” he says.
SPECIALTIES
“It’s unique because we can accomplish things faster, with the finest material, and it’s all done in-house, so we can control the final product.” It’s a fine-tuned formula that Dr. Silverstrom also contends makes it much easier on the patient, overall, regardless of their smile objectives. “The goal is that we want to do the right thing for the patient - always. It’s a relationship, and we would much rather have a long-term relationship with a patient than just fix a tooth quickly.”

SCOTT SPIRO, MD
Surgeon by Trade,
Artist at Heart By Christine S. Maxwell
A
Surgeon by Trade, Artist at Heart, describes Scott Spiro, MD, perfectly. A renowned plastic surgeon, Dr. Spiro maintains a busy private plastic surgery practice in West Orange, treating patients across the globe. He also has affiliations with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Livingston Surgery Center. Applying his strong concept of beauty, he creates terrific outcomes by combining art and medicine. Beautiful forms created through art have shaped Dr. Spiro’s whole life. As an undergraduate, he began his lifelong pursuit of visual arts. And he realized his calling early on when he decided that his greatest pursuit would be to focus on visual arts in medicine. Later, after completing medical studies at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School, he completed a five-year general surgery residency (during residency, he illustrated numerous articles in medical journals). With this unique background in art and medicine, he entered the prestigious plastic surgery program at the University of Miami. “The University had a three-year waiting list for entry into the program,” he says. “They looked for candidates who could think outside the box and were very creative. My unique background allowed me to do this.” His artist perspective is evident in all his endeavors. Often, he arises early to work on his art before beginning his day as a surgeon. Patients view many of his acclaimed pieces in oil, graphic, and photography as they enter his medical office. Further, he views each patient as a potential work of art. “An artist sees the world differently,” explains Dr. Spiro. “I can see the past, present, and future beauty that I can create in my patients. People trust my vision, and they trust my art.” Dr. Spiro specializes in the cosmetic surgery of the breast, body contouring, facial aesthetic surgery, and breast cancer reconstruction. His award-winning spa also offers treatments in CoolSculpting®, Botox®, cosmetic fillers, microneedling, and medical-grade skincare treatments.”

europathy, fibromyalgia, sciatica, shingles and migraines are very complex conditions that are often misdiagnosed and difficult, if not impossible, to treat.
Until now. Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine LLC is an expert at treating difficult to manage, chronic conditions. She treats patients with complex conditions like neuropathy, migraines and also those who require surgery but would have a difficult time going under the knife or have simply decided they would rather explore other options. “My typical patient has been everywhere else and told there’s no hope. Those are the cases that I really excel at.” “I don’t think a lot of people really understand acupuncture,” Aleksandra says. “I get results because I combine many alternative therapies. The scientist in me looks at the patient from both Biomedical and TCM lens and combines different approaches that may include acupuncture, ATP BioResonance Therapy™, Electro-acupuncture, O3 Restorative Therapy nutrition, body mechanics, and herbal formulas.”

ATP BioResonance Therapy™ is a non-invasive and painless technique for treating pain that uses low-level electrical current. The clinic also offers EAM, or ElectroAcupuncture Medicine, which stimulates the body to release specific neurotransmitters it might be lacking. Like regular acupuncture it is a pain-free treatment. “Einstein said that the medicine of the future will be electricity,” Aleksandra says. “And we’re seeing more and more electricity being used in medicine with great results.” Aleksandra even puts her own twist on the traditional cosmetic and anti-aging acupuncture protocol treatments. “We add a red light machine and connect a ATP BioResonance Therapy™ machine to a hydrating mask that carries a microcurrent to the skin. It’s like a face lift without the scalpel.” Aleksandra crafts a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient to achieve the best possible results. “I have the best job in the world,” she adds. “I change peoples’ lives.

A Complete Approach to Dentistry By Christine S. Maxwell
D
ental health and overall wellness begin in the mouth. So believes Med Dawoud, DMD, and his partner, Paula Gencarelli, DMD, at D&G Dental. They celebrate their 10th year of dental services to West Orange and surrounding communities in October 2022. With a staff of 10 dental professionals, D&G Dental provides complete, comprehensive dental care for patients of all ages. From cavities to cleanings, whitening, and implants to complete mouth restoration, the dental experts at D&G Dental provide the utmost care with quality, modern treatments. The office maintains the latest in dental technology, providing immediate access to views of teeth and gum tissue by intraoral cameras, scanners, and 3d pictures of sinus and nerve tissue. Modern X-Ray equipment vastly reduces radiology exposure to patients. Through continuing education, all employees keep abreast of the most recent dental findings and procedures. At the core of D&G Dental’s mission is not to treat just the mouth but the whole person. In recent years, Dr. Dawoud has seen a lot of patients with underlying medical conditions. A careful review of the patient’s medical records, medications, and recent incidents often affects the treatment of the mouth. For example, current studies indicate that periodontal gum disease can impact medical conditions like diabetes, heart attacks, and osteoporosis. By treating periodontal disease, these conditions, in turn, can improve. Dr. Dawoud states that dental implants have had the most profound effect on his patients. Many patients come to his office feeling hopeless because of bad teeth resulting from either neglect or an underlying medical condition. Dental implants are an example of where science and artistry combine to produce great results. “With the latest and least invasive procedures, we can restore a mouth full of teeth, achieving a desired cosmetic look and optimal function. The ability to chew well with good teeth aids in the digestion process, which begins in the mouth,” he says. “Everyone deserves a beautiful, healthy smile,” says Dr. Dawoud.

eter DeLuca, MD, is an accomplished fellowship-trained sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon. Affiliated with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CMBC) and an RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group provider, Dr. Deluca has dedicated his career to treating athletes of all ages, including elite athletes in professional sports, and specializes in minimally-invasive surgery and shoulder and knee treatment. Dr. DeLuca brings a wealth of experience in sports medicine to RWJBarnabas Health, having trained extensively in problems of the shoulder and knee. Surgically, he performs advanced arthroscopic procedures such as ACL reconstructions (the tissue that connects the thighbone to the shinbone at the knee), shoulder labral repair, cartilage replacements, meniscus repairs and rotator cuff repairs. Arthroscopic surgery, as compared to open surgery, is a minimally-invasive surgery technique that requires a few little incisions around the joint rather than one larger one, shown to decrease complications post-op. At CBMC, Dr. DeLuca works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of therapists, athletic trainers, sports nutritionists and sports psychologists. His goal is to focus on younger patients, working with high school coaches and trainers on exercises that can potentially prevent athlete injuries. In addition to serving as the Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Flyers, Dr. DeLuca was the NFC Pro Bowl Team Physician in 2002, 2003 and 2010. His vast expertise also extended internationally, serving as an NHL consultant for the Sochi, Russia Winter Olympics in 2014. In 2014, Dr. DeLuca received the Dick Vermeil Lifetime Achievement Award from the Otho Davis Scholarship Foundation (OSDF) for his outstanding contribution and dedication in the field of sports medicine. SACKS ORTHODONTICS is Giving People Something to Smile About By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

hen you decide it is time to get the smile you have always wanted, it’s essential to choose the right orthodontist. Sacks Orthodontics understands that orthodontic care is about more than simply creating straight teeth, it is about creating confident smiles, therefore, the practice focuses on the whole person, taking the client’s goals and needs into account. When you come to Sacks Orthodontics, you are in good hands. Dr. Eric Sacks is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, making him a BoardCertified Orthodontist, an accolade achieved by less than a third of orthodontists in the United States. He is also one of only three Invisalign
Diamond Plus doctors in the entire state of New Jersey. In addition, he is the number one Invisalign® provider in NJ, and one of the top 11 Invisalign® providers in the United States. Dr. Sacks is a firm believer that children should see an orthodontist by the time they are seven years old. He says this allows the orthodontist to see if adult teeth are present and whether it looks like there could be problems down the road. The practice also caters to teens and adults. According to Dr. Sacks, it is never too late to get braces and with the use of Invisalign®, it is easier for adults to get the dental support they need.
June 2022
In addition, Dr. Sacks invented Dentagrafix® because “he saw a void in the expanding use of clear appliances.” He says that kids and adults enjoy choosing colors or designs on their retainers. Dentagrafix® “turns something that is dull and boring into something fun.” The professionally designed patterns are strategically placed on the back teeth, leaving the front clear, which allows for individuality. The practice also offers braces and Light Force Braces.

A
s a child, Dr. Helen Chiu was good with her hands, and enjoyed painting and drawing. By the time she was in college, she also knew she wanted to be her own boss. So, although no one in her family was a dentist, she decided on dentistry as a career—a choice her patients have applauded for more than 25 years. It has not always been easy. She needed to navigate the sometimes-competing needs of parenthood and her practice. At one point, she had to hire someone to drive one of her children to and from school. But she was able to establish a strong team in her office, and her family was completely supportive of her efforts. Now, with multiple generations as patients, she re-energizes herself by embracing the many new technologies and procedures modern dentistry offers. She’s excited to go to seminars teaching about new tools she can use to help patients. Helping patients improve their dental health, and through that, their overall health, remains a major source of job satisfaction. She described one patient whose mouth and teeth needed a full year of work to restore. That patient, she said, is now able to feel much better about herself, not just her teeth. Under Dr. Chiu, Chiu Dental Care will always make “care” a real promise to all patients.

hen Ed Fritz and Kelly DiStefano, MD, opened Montclair Rejuvenation Center West in West Caldwell in January 2022, they had two goals. They wanted to offer area residents the same quality and affordable aesthetic services as they did in their first location, Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona. With a staff of 22 dedicated professionals—all experts in specific therapies—and the addition of their West Caldwell location, their mission is fulfilled. Staff member Alessandra Vernice, BSN, RN, CEN, is a certified nurse injector specializing in injectable health treatments. Formerly an emergency room nurse, Vernice enjoys her current position as an aesthetic nurse. Popular procedures that she offers include Botox® and dermal fillers to rejuvenate the face. Botox® injections are known to be used to help with migraines. Vernice also specializes in other treatments. One treatment includes hair growth and skin treatments with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is part of a facial treatment that can lift discolorations and revitalize the skin of the face. She also injects vitamin-rich platelets from the patients into the scalp. When injected into the scalp, PRP stimulates hair growth.
A treatment that is in high demand is the Intravenous (IV) hydration service. Multiple vitamins, namely B and B12, are put in the IV fluid. Treatment outcomes include skin improvement, increased Alessandra Vernice energy, suppressed appetites, and general well-being feelings. Vitamin B12 may also offer increased vitality when injected into the shoulder. The effects of these therapies are immediate, lasting two or more weeks. “Transitioning into aesthetics has given me that ability to help people become the best versions of themselves in everyday lives. Confidence is the best outfit, and when we feel good, we do good,” Vernice says. “I love seeing my patients light up after treatment. To share their joy is indescribable!”

LightPort Physical Therapy & Spa Relieves Pain, Increases Mobility By Janis Hashe

n a 15-year healthcare career, Yris Van Brakle, PTA (Physical Therapy Assistant) has seen firsthand what a quality-of-life difference good physical therapy can make. At Caldwell’s LightPort Physical Therapy & Spa, she is able to use her degree in biology and knowledge of human anatomy to contribute to the team’s success in helping those with traumatic injuries or chronic pain feel better. Under the direction of Dr. John De Hoyos, DPT, the facility treats multiple conditions using physical therapy, Yris said, including lower-back pain, neck/shoulder pain, and hip pain. “With many more working from home, sitting at their computer desks, we see many people who can benefit from stretching and strengthening exercises,” she said. Though physicians often refer clients to LightPort, a doctor’s referral isn’t necessary. 54

LightPort also offers a wide range of massage therapies. Therapeutic massage focuses on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and allowing the body to heal itself. Yris often utilizes the Graston Technique, a form of soft-tissue manual therapy that uses instruments with a specialized form of mobilization/scraping the skin gently. This is designed to help the practitioner identify areas of restriction, and slowly break up scar tissue. Sports massage often addresses a traumatic injury, she said, and helps decrease pain and increase mobility, allowing the person to return to activity more quickly. The LightPort facility is recently renovated, with soothing colors and a relaxing ambiance. “People tell us, ‘It feels really good just to come here,’” said Yris. June 2022

Diamond Minds
Shortening The Gap By Barry Farber
W
hat’s the best path to shorten that gap between the inception of an idea to its execution and results? Here are several ways to do just that: Preparation - Sometimes you wonder if you’re taking too long to launch an idea or release a new product, but many times that preparation pays off in the quality of the end result. Word of mouth is a very powerful sales and marketing technique in any endeavor. And if your idea has been thought out and planned well it will benefit from the people spreading the word. It will also fuel your action because the belief and enthusiasm for the value you’ve worked hard to build drives you forward. So never underestimate the power and knowledge you gain from deep preparation followed by meaningful action. Environment - The people you surround yourself with are so critical when it comes to the execution. I look for many elements when forming relationships with partners, clients and vendors. But this one is at the top of the list. Trust. Sure, contracts help with the direction and roles each of
you plays in the process. But at the end of the day there is no price you can put on the value of a trusted relationship. Each of you going beyond each other’s expectations. It’s what helps you sleep at night. I remember one of the biggest agents in Hollywood being interviewed and asked why he has no contracts with his clients. His answer was simple. If they want to leave and they don’t see the value I provide, then they’re welcome to do that. It’s probably the sole reason why he has a premier clientele and why so many of them seek him out. Value - Every idea, invention, and new business concept needs to have powerful benefits for the audience it serves. This was drilled into my belief system many years ago after asking this simple question to publishers, QVC buyers and my retained clients: “What are the three most important criteria you look for when you make a decision on a new author, or a new product to air on QVC, or to hire a consultant to help you gain access to national accounts?” Each of their answers were different but what wasn’t different is the tremendous value that was put into
the development and design of the idea. Barry Farber Their answers helped sell millions of books, millions of patented writing instruments, and a large number of corporate clients over the years. Without true value there would be no foundation to stand on when times get tough or rejection and obstacles got in the way. I always like to work on projects that are unconventional in action but highly functional with results. They also have no resemblance to current market strategies. There’s an excitement built around a new concept and idea. It’s what really ends up as a breakthrough. It’s not the easiest road to take, although it is the most rewarding. People will always shoot your idea down when it doesn’t follow the normal way of operating in an industry. You have to be relentless in your pursuit and have a thick skin and know that you did your diligence when going through the points above. Especially the value you build around your idea.
Barry Farber is a best-selling author, an award winning radio and television host as well as an agent and marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers. He’s also the creator and marketer of the FoldzFlat® Pens. His latest release is an inspirational children’s book “In search of the magic tree” available at www.barryfarber.com
