Local Resident’s Spirit for Volunteerism is Inspiring

By Jackie Schatell

I

f you live in the West Essex area, and you have volunteered, chances are pretty good that you have worked with Kathy Pigott of Roseland, who for 21 years has been running 11 charitable campaigns for the homeless, the needy, the soldiers and more. And as if her volunteer schedule isn’t busy enough, during the pandemic, she and her volunteers ran “Sure Shot” where they scheduled hundreds of vaccine appointments for those needing help! Kathy, says she works with 250-300 volunteers a year, and that she is grateful and credits them with the success of the endeavors. She has found that people really want to volunteer, they just need to know how to find the opportunities. “We all want to help others and do good,

we just need the opportunity,” she says. “My role in the community is to bring people together and provide them with that opportunity.” Incredibly, Kathy runs every project with a $0 budget. They are all fully run through volunteerism. Kathy’s high-school sweetheart husband of 35 years, and their daughter, helps with all the community service projects. She says she believes “everyone should volunteer because we are all here to help one another,” and notes that “we are very blessed to live in this area, where just 20 miles away, people are starving.” Kathy is so dedicated to her causes that she has a permanent donation box on her driveway.

Kathy Pigott While she has been doing this charitable work for over 20 years, she feels she has a lot more to give. In fact, when she became disabled in 2000 from ARDS (SARS) and septicemia, and was in the ICU for weeks, her husband told the doctors she would pull through because, “you don’t know my wife, she has so much more to do!” After three months in the hospital, Kathy came back at 80 percent raring to go! Kathy says she has received a number of awards from State, local and other organizations for her devotion to community service but states, “They are wonderful and I’m humbled, but that’s not why I do this. We must help each other and show compassion and respect. I want the world to know I’m Christian by my actions and not by my words.” “I truly believe life comes full circle, and when you need help, someone will be there to help you,” she states. To volunteer, please contact Kathy at 973-768-3512 or at jetspigott@aol.com.

LOCAL TEENS Launch Charitable Business During Pandemic By Jackie Schatell

T

hree Essex County Middle School students: Jada Bednar and Ellie Ghingo, seventh graders from Verona, and Ava Tsettos, a West Caldwell seventh grader, not only turned a passion project that evolved during the pandemic into a business, launching JAÉ Candles and Co., they donated a portion of their Spring 2021 proceeds to Team Zoey, a New Jersey-based organization dedicated to raising money for the Progeria Research Foundation, which is seeking to finding a cure for kids suffering from the rare progressive, genetic disorder. And, recently, the girls announced a partnership with Greens Do

Good, the first social enterprise vertical farm in New Jersey where all the profits support individuals with Autism. JAÉ Candles and Co. created an exclusive scent for the partnership with all proceeds benefiting this organization. “We love being able to give back, which is why our business’ motto is ‘spreading love and light one candle at a time,’” says the trio. During quarantine, curiosity and boredom led to the trio experimenting with different fragrances and learning how to make candles. Although they had no prior experience with candle making, the

friends discovered they enjoyed crafting together, and began selling their candles door-to-door, through word of mouth and via social media. Later, after gaining support from the community, they began selling on Etsy and Facebook, as well as at Montclair’s Pink Bungalow, Jaipure Yoga and more. By early October 2020, the girls had sold more than 1,000 candles. Today, almost a year later, they have launched a website, jaecandles.com, sold more than 2,000 candles, and are working to release their Fall 2021 Collection.

S

ited within the Yogi Berra Museum’s 800-square foot atrium, PITCH! allows visitors to face off against an animated batter and catcher displayed on a video wall. When players throw a soft rubber ball against the wall, the installation tracks the ball’s measured velocity as well as the accuracy of the pitch (“strike” or “ball.”) The animated characters on screen react to each pitch in keeping with the rules of the game, with the batter swinging at “good” pitches and passing on balls, and the catcher delivering an apt “Yogiism” as appropriate. Players can compare throwing speeds, which will flash on screen after each pitch. Life, Hair, Happiness

By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

T

om Harris has been the Artistic Director of Shag86 salon only since June, but is anything but a novice. Harris has 46 years of experience training stylists worldwide—39 of those years as a national educator with the famed hair care company John Paul Mitchell Systems. At Shag86, he puts his experience to use as both a stylist and as a teacher to other stylists. He says, “I have an in-depth consultation with every client, taking their facial features, body shape, hair color/texture and lifestyle into account. I absolutely study the entire person; whether they are shy or outgoing, I make sure that they are comfortable talking to me.” Allowing for this comfort level is extremely important. Harris notes that “Some clients have no idea what they want; others are in a rut or in the wrong hair style.” Harris remarked, “I love seeing a smile on every clients face with their end result.” When he is not seeing individual clients, Harris is busy working with the rest of the Shag86 team. He explains, “My role here is to raise the level of expertise in all professional services we offer. As part of that, I am introducing our new Future Professional Training Program to instruct our junior staff to the highest levels of hair cutting and coloring. I will also be working with senior staff. All of this education will elevate the client’s experience.” Referring to Shag86, Harris says, “I am proud and honored to have been asked to take the Artistic Director position here. Since joining Shag86, I’ve witnessed a salon that, for the past 18 years, has produced fantastic hair in a happy, teamoriented setting.” Shag86 represents the best of the best in the industry. “Gerald (Ferraro, the owner) has built an amazing three-floor facility with top-level talent right in the heart of Little Falls. We’re heading into the future with amazing plans,” he remarked.

Humble Beginnings for This Neighborhood Landscaper Photo by Dan Epstein

K.

Macken Landscaping had a modest start before it grew into the company that it is today. Owner, Kevin Macken, took on his first job in fifth grade—picking up apples that fell from his neighbor’s backyard tree—earning .2 cents an apple. From there he moved on to mowing his neighbor’s yard along with others in the neighborhood. After noticing this could earn him steady income, he posted signs on the community bulletin board at the West Caldwell ShopRite. Soon after, he achieved a roster of regularly scheduled clients, and the business has grown steadily over the years. Today, K.Macken Landscaping has multiple crews that maintain residential and commercial properties throughout Essex County. Their number one goal is client satisfaction. They are committed to listening to the needs of their customers and providing customized maintenance and design services to support their clients landscaping goals. K.Macken Landscaping also believes in giving back to the community. Kevin and his crew participate in numerous fundraisers supporting local groups and volunteer to beautify

Partners for the PERFECT REMODEL

By Janis Hashe

H

omeowners making that initial contact with G&L and Sons Renovations about a kitchen, bath, basement or other remodel get the benefit of more than 35 years of experience— as well as up-to-date design techniques. Partner David Caputo explained that after an initial free consultation, the scope of the project and budget are discussed, followed by a design agreement. “We educate the client on options for materials, textures, wall coverings… maybe things they haven’t thought of,” he said. Then everything from 2-D renderings to computer-generated models are available to help visual the final look. The pandemic has slowed down delivery times for materials, said Caputo, “so we work with the homeowner to come up with design solutions that include in stock items that don’t have long lead times.” The goal is a renovation that looks great, functions well, and adds to a home’s value.

Joyce says, “Prior choral experience is not a requirement; we listen for pitch-matching, tuning and vocal quality. Most of all, we are looking for choristers who have a love and passion for singing.” Once accepted into the chorus, a student does not need to re-audition, although singers will be placed into different ensembles as their voices mature and change. Rehearsals, held weekly, begin with a physical warmup. Joyce notes that “Our singers are vocal athletes.” This is followed by warmups for breathing, humming/phonation, range extension and flexibility, and ear-training. Each chorister’s musicianship is furthered developed through the varied repertoire, and through in-house retreats with guest clinicians.

ince 1992, the New Jersey Youth Chorus has been making beautiful music locally, nationally and even internationally. Founder and Artistic Director Trish Joyce says, “There is work involved in reaching our level of excellence, but we consider ourselves a family.” Joining the NJYC family begins with an audition. Prior to the pandemic, auditions were held in person each spring. Auditions are now online and are continuing through September. Prospective members are asked to prepare specific scales and songs based on the choir level; there are five ensembles that make up the chorus for grades 3-12.

n a town like Montclair—known for restaurants—an experience nothing short of amazing is being found at Laboratorio Kitchen. Chef/Owner James DeSisto says, “The name reflects my expression to food.” In the creations that come out of his kitchen one can find the influences of Italian, French, and New American cuisines spun in an original and highly creative way. His careful sourcing of local produce, sustainable seafood, as well as the fresh pasta, that is all made in-house, create taste sensations the novelty of which is palpable.

Experience CULINARY EXCELLENCE at Laboratorio KITCHEN

Chef DeSisto was trained formally at Johnson Wales culinary school, and then began working under influential leaders of the culinary world such as Emeril Lagasse, Tyler Florence, and Mitchell Altholz. But it was in his grandmother’s kitchen working with her and his mother, where he truly discovered his interest and commitment to creating delicious food that made people happy. Since opening in September of 2014 he has felt the team in his kitchen is like the family of his childhood—together they are more important than any individual. DeSisto himself can be found at the restaurant almost 80 hours a week where he makes all sauces personally as well as breaks down the meat and fish. The teamwork and DeSisto’s attention to every detail truly shows on the plate and especially on the tongue.

Attract More Birds to Your Backyard

W

ith all the constraints people lived through in 2020, many turned to their own backyards— for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Feeding birds can be enjoyable for all and provide stress relieve. A recent study, focusing on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw. The benefits of birdwatching come from seeing lots of birds—quantity not “quality”—the study found. People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus. Data from 2020 shows sales of bird feed, feeders, nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home.

Interest in birding isn’t slowing down. If you haven’t tried attracting birds to your backyard, now is a perfect opportunity to start with these bird feed and feeder basics to attract more birds to your backyard.

Feeders A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with stateof-the-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quickclean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease.

Popular Foods Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. Allnatural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all36

natural black oil sunflower. Or a blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed and less messy than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein. Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits. Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories, rich nutrition and is a highenergy treat. Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment. Explore a New Career or Boost Credentials With a Certificate from Berkeley College By Cynthia Burns

B

erkeley College has empowered the lives of students for 90 years. In its quest to continue creating relevant learning opportunities, the college is expanding its continuing education certificate programs. Among the new offerings are artificial intelligence and machine learning, business analytics, digital and social media, and an entrepreneurship program. They are in addition to certificate programs in interior design, health and medical careers, law enforcement and public safety, social justice, and legal and compliance studies. There are many advantages to Berkeley’s certificate programs. “They are designed to engage students with specialized skills that they can apply immediately,” says Marianne Vakalis, Ed.D., dean, School of Professional Studies. “Most entail completing four or five courses, which can be accomplished in two semesters.” The certificate programs are ideally suited to the demands of the marketplace, particularly in healthcare. They provide students an opportunity to try a new area of study if

they are considering a career change or to add another facet to their credentials. “The courses offered in Berkeley’s certificate programs have always been credit bearing,” says Vakalis. “The credits are applied should a student decide to enroll in a degree program at the college.” Apart from courses that require in-person labs, as do several in design and healthcare, certificate requirements can be completed online. Berkeley College Online® was one of the first college online programs worldwide to be certified for excellence by the United States Distance Learning Association. The certificate programs are offered through the Woodland Park campus and Berkeley’s three other locations.

Innovative Learning with Brainiax

O

pportunities for innovative learning come alive at Brainiax, a S.T.E.A.M. learning center for toddlers, preschoolers and students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Founded by teacher, mother and business owner Debra Kirchen, she opened the center after recognizing the need for a hands-on, interactive education for her children. With online and inperson programs, Brainiax provides young kids access to science, technology/ robotics, engineering, art, chess and mathematics in a safe and fun environment. Children can expand their horizons and develop their social skills, knowledge, confidence, and problem-solving skills through S.T.E.M. sports, Lego building, and other classes. Notes Kirchen, “An open-ended, curious approach encourages kids to think outside the box and collaborate to work toward a solution. Developing critical thinking skills is an important part of growing up.” Visit www.brainiaxnj.com to enroll your children in classes for the fall or schedule a Brainiax birthday party.

Prepping Girls for Lifelong Success By Janis Hashe

C

aldwell’s Mount St. Dominic Academy graduates have a 100 percent college acceptance rate. The Catholic college preparatory school for girls, established in 1892, maintains a focus on the Dominican Pillars of “Study, Prayer, Community, and Mission,” while encouraging its students to “Find Your Fire,” search for and develop their passions, according to Academic Dean Laura Hollenbaugh. The school prides itself on a faculty that specializes in knowing how girls learn best. They are engaged and eager students ready to participate and be challenged. The school has a welcoming, nurturing, inclusive, and safe environment that helps students create meaningful, often lifelong bonds. By offering rigorous academics, creative fine and performing arts, and competitive athletics—there is something to inspire every type of student. Hollenbaugh also pointed to the academy’s signature courses, taught through blended learning in the classroom and the real world, including The L.E.O. t Temple Sholom of West Essex, the pandemic reinforced bonds of community and connection that have been its foundation since 1954, according Cantor Kenneth Feibush. The need to protect members was paramount— but so was the need to provide the comfort and support of continuing services. Fortunately, a livestream camera had just been installed before shutdowns were mandated. “We learned how to transform services so people could enjoy them at home,” said Cantor Feibush. This resulted in being able to reach people in many places, even outside of New Jersey. The temple has plans to continue livestreaming services going forward. The religious school has also been able to utilize technology to continue its classes. And the many tech professionals in the congregation have volunteered their time to help tech-shy elders become proficient. Emphasizing the warm welcome new families receive when they join the congregation, he states, “We rely on relationships and always have.”

harron Miller, founder and Director of Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA) believes there is a compelling meaning of the art form of dance: she views dance as a vital and distinctly personal form of self-expression that builds self confidence in all areas of a youngster’s life. “Performing Arts programs encourage students to express themselves creatively. Nurturing the creative possibilities within children through their participation in dance, music, art and drama can bolster self-esteem and selfconfidence. Having the opportunity to experience the arts truly “matters...and it's fun!” she states. The mission of SMAPA, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, is to provide comprehensive, inclusive developmental training in dance and related theater arts for children, teens and adults.

Buy Nothing Groups are Bringing Communities Together By Jackie Schatell

R

emember simpler times when neighbors could simply walk next door to borrow a cup of sugar? While that is not the norm in today’s busy society, and many of us don’t even know our neighbors, there is a nationwide movement called the Buy Nothing Project that is essentially bringing us back to times of yore. Through the movement, neighbors can go on Facebook to their specific town’s Buy Nothing (BN) Groups and post anything they would like to give away, lend or share amongst neighbors, as well as ask for anything they would like to receive for free or borrow. This group is strictly a gift economy, as there are no fees involved, only random acts of kindness happening all day long – every day.

“I have received many messages thanking me for bringing the community together.” —Anna Shukeylo, Livingston BN Group The items can be as mundane as borrowing toilet paper, gifting toys, or clothing, and as extreme as gifting pianos, furniture, or even exercise equipment. But the gifting is only part of it. The program enables neighbors to meet online and in-person, establishing new connections where they can help one another through life’s challenges and celebrations and feel good by giving freely. Anna Shukeylo, who runs the group for Livingston says, “I have received many messages thanking me for bringing the community together.”

Carrie Reinhardt, who runs the Caldwell BN group says, “Before I toss something, I now think ‘could someone use this’ and I post it and give it a few days to find a new home.” Lyric Gibson, who runs the Montclair group said, “I decorated my new apartment with items I received through the group.” The project also fosters sustainability. According to buynothingproject.org, the founders designed the program to address the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as well as the lesser known Rs - Refuse and Rethink. Participating allows community members to extend the life of items by gifting things they no longer want or need to those in the community who do. It also helps helps to limit the number of items going into landfills. Tez Utopia, the admin for the West Orange group told us, “Someone got married in a gown they received through the group and posted photos from her special day.” As of July 2021, there were more than 4.25 million participants in 44 countries with over 6500 communities led by over 13,000 volunteers. You can learn more at buynothingproject.org, and check out the map to see if there is an existing group in your town. If there isn’t one, you may just want to start one there.

A DISCUSSION WITH

Jilian Fazio, Director Clouded Leopard SSP Coordinator and ISB, Turtle Back Zoo By Jackie Schatell

T

urtle Back Zoo, which opened in 1963, is home to over 200 species, representing animals from around the world. The Zoo, which is situated on 20 acres, is part of the South Mountain Recreation Complex and the Essex County Park system. Jilian Fazio, the Director of Turtle Back Zoo hopes to foster interconnectedness between people and animals and instill a true understanding of the importance of preserving the ecosystems we are a part of to conserve the biodiversity, and to positively impact the future sustainability of our planet.

How did you choose this career? It is more like this career chose me! I was always interested in studying animal behavior and thought I would do research on animals in the wild. When I graduated college, there was an internship opportunity at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, working with invertebrates (bugs). During the internship, I had an opportunity to learn all about the amazing conservation, education and research that zoological institutions and their partners are a part of and I was hooked.

How long have you been in the field and at the Zoo? When I turned 15, my parents told me I had to get a part-time job. I only applied for one, at a local pet store in town, and I have been working with animals ever since. Although, I have been working at zoos since 2001, I am relatively new to Turtle Back having started in December 2020.

What do you do at the Zoo? As Director of the Turtle Back Zoo, I wear lots of hats. Some days I am privileged enough to assist in hand rearing our brand-new baby sloth, Juneberry, and other days I spend my time in meetings. I am also the Species Survival Plan Coordinator and International Studbook Keeper for the Clouded Leopard, so a portion of my time is dedicated to helping zoos manage that species throughout North America, and maintaining the records (births, deaths and transfers) for all clouded leopards around the globe. Generally, it is my responsibility to work closely with our Education, Guest Relations and Maintenance departments,

Jilian Fazio along with our generous support organization, The Zoological Society of New Jersey, to ensure we are providing the highest level of animal care to every single animal in our zoo, while providing an exceptional experience to our guests.

What are the most popular exhibits at the Zoo? Everyone loves the giraffes, penguins, sea lions and turtles of course! Our partnership with Sea Turtle Recovery allows us to highlight the amazing work they are doing to rescue, rehabilitate and release turtles each year. Turtles are one of the most threatened groups of animals in the world, so we are committed to their conservation, and guests should keep their eyes out for more turtles throughout our zoo. Many guests also love to visit our American Alligator, Peaches, as he basks in the sun or takes a dip to cool off in his pool. The zoo offers several guest experience areas, including the Touch Tank, with our cownose rays and epaulette sharks. The giraffe feed offers an up close and personal encounter with one of the six males in the bachelor herd. There is also an aviary, pony rides and a butterfly tent to help support our pollinator populations. And of course, the most popular attraction, the train ride!

What are the newest exhibits? County Executive Joe DiVincenzo is extremely supportive of the zoo and prioritizes efforts to provide the animals with the highest quality of care, so we are always working on improvements to our animals’ habitats. Our most recent exhibits are the Bald Eagle habitat, newly renovated in Wild America. We brought in a rescue eagle, Freedom, to join our

Two of the Zoo’s six males in the giraffe bachelor herd. The giraffe feed offers an up-close and personal encounter current female, Adak, and highlight this iconic species and the Federal efforts through conservation legislation that helped bring this species back from the brink of extinction. We also recently renovated our North American Otter exhibit and our dynamic duo, Han and Shelby, absolutely love the upgrades we have made to their habitat. You can view them daily in their new River Retreat. Finally, our Aldabra Tortoises have made a new home in the African Adventure. Stay tuned for an addition to our Touch Tank exhibit coming soon!

What is something interesting people would not know about your department? We work collaboratively every day to manage thousands of species in order to maintain a genetically valuable population of animals that if needed could be reintroduced to the wild. There are countless researchers, scientists, animal care specialists, educators, interns and volunteers that contribute to the work we do.

Is there anything I did not ask that you would like to include? I think it is important for individuals to know that they can make a difference to help conserve this planet! No matter what you are good at or how small the changes you make, you can help! You can apply whatever your talents are to help protect wild places and the species that depend on them. We need a passionate army of people to help preserve the ecosystems we are a part of and conserve the biodiversity of the planet. So come out to the zoo, join us and learn what you can do to create a sustainable future for generations to come!

ALLAN GORMAN

Finding Magic in

Ordinary Places By Dan Epstein

W

est Orange resident Allan Gorman will say he is a Realist. At least when it comes to his paintings. It was in the middle of a long and storied career in advertising and marketing while teaching a class at New York’s School of Visual Arts that at the suggestion of his wife he took a painting class. Although satisfying, nevertheless he took a 25 year break from painting to continue his career. It was after enrolling in a painting class at the Montclair Art Museum in 2008 that the momentum hit and he hasn’t looked back, retiring from his business in 2013 to become a full-time painter. Sometimes, in an effort to compliment, a person will say that a photograph “looks like a painting.” In Gorman’s work the opposite is found. Often at first glance his paintings appear to be photographs, and it’s only on closer inspection that you see that they are not. His paintings are based on the photographs he makes of ordinary everyday places, but his mission is not to accurately paint the photograph, but to recreate the emotion of the moment; the something special that he saw on the street and as such the simple ordinary locale is transcended into something magical. In Shadows at Kearny Point, a 20x16” oil on panel, the light coming in through an unadorned window takes you on a Zen-like journey. In Crown, a 60x45” oil on linen, the contrasts in New York City architecture are at play, both with each other and with us the viewers who might have walked past in life, but are stopped in our tracks by the painting. Note Stillwell Stairwell, a moment that everyone who traverses the NY subway system sees relentlessly though most never notice take on a magical quality of moment not unlike an urban version of a journey from The Lord of the Rings. Allan Gorman will say he’s a Realist, though through his work, we see beyond real to the magic in simple moments in his travels, and if we allow ourselves, we learn to see the magic in our own as well. Health and Wellness

Discover a Place to Get Well Mental Health Services for Everyone By Sue Baldani

D

iscovery Wellness Center in Cedar Knolls has therapists that can help its clients live happier, more productive lives. One of them, Dr. Jennifer Sumerlin, talks about her commitment to improving others’ mental health.

Why did you choose a career in mental health?

What are your specialties? Before COVID, I was working heavily with children and that became my specialty, but I also deal with families, individuals and couples. I help with depression, anxiety, grief, eating disorders, LGBT issues and more. Dr. Jennifer Sumerlin

I enjoy hearing about people’s problems and being able to help them see things a little bit differently. I like being instrumental in navigating that.

When did you join Discovery Wellness Center? I joined at the end of 2013. I had just finished my Master’s and was getting ready to do my doctorate in counseling psychology, with an emphasis on social justice, which I obtained in 2017. Everyone here basically helps each other and lets you know you’re not alone. We are a family; there’s no competition.

Why is it so important for people to reach out when they’re having mental health issues?

When you are in your own bubble, you are basically a victim of your own thoughts. That is the worst place to be. You have to learn to talk to people—at least people you trust. And trusting them is not about wanting them to tell you what you want to hear, but instead having them help you get what you need. Sometimes, you just need someone to listen.

11th Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence

F

or its 11th Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence on Saturday, September 18th, Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates (S.O.F.I.A.) welcomes the community to affirm support for those affected by domestic violence and intimate partner violence. Their message continues to be that “With Awareness There is Hope.” The walk will be in Montclair’s Canterbury Park on Planchet Drive—or wherever participants walk. Last year’s in-person and virtual options were highly popular, and they are continuing this hybrid option in the wake of the continuing effects of COVID19. S.O.F.I.A. is excited to host Carol Cohn as Grand Marshal for the event. Ms. Cohn is an outsider artist who began creating personal work in the aftermath of a long marriage. She has seen many kinds of domestic abuse and believes that S.O.F.I.A.’s mission is so important, especially in this COVID-ridden world. She is a published commercial illustrator, and her work is exhibited regularly in many areas, most recently as part of

Fresh Air Montclair. Ms. Cohn is honored to represent this important organization and the amazing work they do. The S.O.F.I.A. Board is thrilled that Ms. Cohn will be joining them as Grand Marshal this year.

Violence minimizes the stigma and raises awareness about warning signs and resources. We hope you will join us!”

Cynthia Walker, executive director and founder of S.O.F.I.A., said, “An important part of why S.O.F.I.A. holds its annual Walk is to show our survivors, as well as those still in abusive relationships, that they have a community of support available to them. Coming together in public for the Walk Against Domestic

Take Steps Toward a

Healthier Lifestyle

T

here isn’t a better time than now to start getting fit with health information and products so easily accessible. Simply incorporate the basics into your daily routine—good nutrition, adequate exercise and a daily supplement—and start down the path toward better health.

Plan a Nutritious Diet The Dietary Guidelines for Americans describes a healthy diet as one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk products. It should be low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, salt and added sugar. • Eat more fruits and vegetables by setting freshly washed and prepared produce on the kitchen counter or at eye level in the fridge. At every meal, make sure half your plate is made up of fruit and vegetable servings. • One-fourth of your plate at every meal should be made up of grains, such as wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal or barley. People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. • The remaining one-fourth of your plate should be lean or lowfat cuts of meat, plant-based protein or seafood.

Get Regular Exercise Daughters of Israel offers a relaxing, safe environment with trained medical professionals.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends an adequate amount of exercise every day. This guide can point to the right amount of exercise to add to your schedule:

Our private rehabilitation campus features:

• Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week. For best results, spread the time out over several days. • Do strength training exercises at least twice a week. Lifting weights builds muscle, which means the body burns more calories—even at rest.

• A Spacious, State-of-the-Art Gym

• It’s important to keep in mind that when people are active, they produce more free radicals. The antioxidants found in supplements can help buffer the negative effects of the workout.

• Recovery Suites and Lounge with Luxury Amenities • Fine Kosher Cuisine

Improving your diet, exercising regularly, taking a daily supplement and getting enough restorative sleep are all important steps to overall wellness. Work to incorporate each step into your daily routine until you reach your goal of good health, and find more health-conscious tips at eLivingToday.com.

Helping Clients Prosper in Life By Deborah Schapiro

A

s a clinical psychologist specializing in trauma and addiction issues, Dr. Amanda Aster-McKenna notes, “They often go hand in hand. The people I treat are often using drugs and/or alcohol to conceal or mask painful past experiences. I help them process their experiences in a healthy way.” Treatment with Dr. Aster-McKenna begins with a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video. At this time, she explains, “We talk lightly about the patient’s issues and see if we’re a good fit.” Assuming they are, they will then have regular 50-minute sessions. Dr. Aster-McKenna does evidence-based therapy, grounded in research and proven to be effective at least 85% of the time. She uses a variety of techniques, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She moved her practice to Montclair this past April and is thrilled with the new location: “My new office is larger and more inviting. I can better help my clients live richer, more satisfying lives.”

alandra’s Italian Market & Deli has always offered its customers fresh, delicious food, but now their menu is better than ever. Executive Chef Robert Caravaggio has totally revamped it to provide items that would be hard pressed to find in an average deli. “We now have close to 150 menu items,” he says. “We make 90% of everything in-house and 100% from scratch, and the other 10% is imported from Italy.” Fresh bread is made multiple times a day just for the deli alone, and fresh pastas and sauces are available to take home. The menu boards have also been redone to give the deli a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and the breakfast and lunch choices found on them are a foodie’s dream come true. One option to start your day is a Brûlée French Toast which are made with Calandra’s Semolina French baguettes that are soaked in a custard for 24 hours. “And our pancakes are not only huge, but have fresh fruit baked into them,” says Chef Robert. “Our portions are really great—you’re getting quality and quantity.” For lunch, along with the usual paninis and wraps, patrons will find Italian specialty sandwiches such as a Roman-style porchetta which is slowly baked for six hours and an Italian roasted pork done three ways. It is then marinated for 24 hours and roasted for four more. Mouth-watering! In addition to fresh foods, there are a variety of imported treasures on the shelves. “I reached out to importers from different regions of Italy, so now when you come in, you’ll see items from the Piedmont, Pugila, Calabria, Bari and Sicily regions of Italy,” he says. “We have items on our shelves that no one around has.”

Nothing But Authentic and Fresh Recipes Are Offered at Patsy’s Seafood & Pizza House By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

I

nspired by family traditions, Anthony Dagostino, owner of Patsys’ Seafood & Pizza House offers diners the old-school clam house experience. True to tradition, their recipes are simple and authentic using only the freshest catch and ingredients. “Everything is fresh and made to order, so guests should expect to be here for at least an hour,” says Dagostino. Executive Chef Jessica expertly makes Patsy’s well-known and well-loved dishes that include Shrimp Scampi, Linguini and Clam Sauce, Pinsa (Roman-style pizza comprising 50% wheat, 20% soy, and 20% rice flour, which is cut into large square pieces), Atlantic Roasted Cod over vegetables and many other specialties. The restaurant also offers an amazing East Coast Raw Oyster Bar. Dagostino says he believes the food is just part of the ingredient that makes Patsy’s special—the ‘old-school loud clam house atmosphere, chock full of 70s hits music playing’ is just as important.

Those new to Patsy’s who are wondering what delicacy to try first, Dagostino’s personal favorites are the Shrimp Scampi or Pappardelle Bolognese. “All of our pasta is fresh, which makes a huge difference,” says Anthony. “Freshly-made pasta absorbs all flavors, making each dish especially delicious.” Patsy’s, which opened its doors in December 2019, offers large portions, great service, and reasonable pricing. This gem is open 7-days-a week, offering indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant only takes reservations from Friday-Sunday.

DQ: Sharing Whoowe is definitely my passion. Knowing that I can positively impact potentially every family on the planet as well as being able to share my own personal story with my children, and their future children, keeps me going.

Having an understanding of where we came from and the special people that came before us gives us a foundation, grounding, confidence, and overall well being in life that we need to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. I want to help everyone gain that. BF: How did you come up with this idea? DQ: The idea behind whoowe came to me one night while thinking about the various ways people pass on their story in the aftermath of a loved one’s passing. I was thinking that the most intimate way to learn about and know someone is to talk to them, face to face. That’s when it hit me. I was going to develop a way for people to create a life story that would engage their loved ones in a type of virtual face to face conversation. An app that could intimately teach our future who we are, hence… whoowe. Barry Farber: How would you explain to someone what Whoowe is? Dan Qualiano: Whoowe creates a personal living biography, in video, of your life in an interactive way, beyond the photo album or home video. It gives your family, friends, and future generations a way to learn about and really “get to know” you through a virtual face to face conversation experience. What would you want to tell your future grand kids about yourself? Whoowe can help you tell your story for those in your life today and for your future generations of your family years from now. BF: What inspired you? DQ: In 2017, I lost my wife Kimberly to cancer. From that time on, one of my greatest regrets, was that my grandchildren, who do not yet exist, will never get to know the wonderful woman that was their grandmother. Sure, I have videos and photos, but like most children, younger generations are becoming less interested in looking through photo albums and watching home videos. How will that keep them engaged and teach them about the true person Kim was? I knew I couldn’t solve that problem for my children or grandchildren, but started to think about how I can help other families to have a first hand biography of their loved ones, in a way that would relay the true essence of the person. BF: What keeps your passion going?

BF: What are some of the reactions you’ve seen in the first tests/experiences? DQ: The reactions are amazing, and depending on the age group, I get a different response. For the older generation with years of knowledge, they see the wisdom in preserving one’s life story, and they are ready to tell it. Many shed tears at the thought of being able to hear their mother or father again, and want to give that experience to their grandkids. The middle-aged folks, once they get over that it’s ok to think about life after their death and the family they may never know, they are all in. They see the sand in the hourglass going by so quickly and don’t want to miss the opportunity to tell their story in a visceral way. The younger generation see Whoowe as an easy to use and fun app. They don’t quite grasp the importance of it, because let’s face it… death in their minds is a long way away, but for their parents and grandparents they love the idea and are quick to jump in and start interviewing their elders.
