West Orange Fourth Grader is Crowned Little Miss New Jersey
Gianna Detmer, 9, of West Orange was crowned Little Miss New Jersey—East Coast USA. She then went on to compete in the East Coast USA National Finals where she was titled Miss Congenial, Best Smile, and People’s Choice Queen, and received crowns, sashes, wall plaques and cash prizes. According to Gianna’s mom, Heather Detmer, the contests are “natural beauty pageants” where the contestants cannot wear makeup or hairpieces. Gianna enjoys designing clothes, art, and dancing, and is on a mission to save the panda bears. In September, she competed in the Miss and Mr. American Dream Back to School Pageant, where she took 4th Place. Next, she will be competing in a Christmas Pageant. Gianna also walked for Kat Couture during New York Fashion Week.

Local Mom Starts Blog Called, “Keeping Kids Busy” Alyssa
Kees of Cedar Grove has started a blog and Instagram page called “@KeepingKidsBusy_NJ” where she shares details about places she has taken her two young boys. The goal is to connect parents with local events and activities. She says that although she grew up in Cedar Grove, which is where she lives now, she moved away to PA for a while and came back as a mother not knowing what was available to do with her children. She began posting on Instagram about her outings and people started asking questions. She says she posts about well-known activities and places, as well as things to do within 30 minutes of Cedar Grove. She says, “I have two young boys and want to help them grow, evolve, learn, and play. I am trying to find all the fun for them and helping other moms to do the same along the way is very rewarding.”
Local Mom Writes Book on FPIES to Help Others
Angelika
Sharma, of Livingston, has written a book called, A Mother’s Guide to FPIES, which is geared to helping parents and caregivers who are new to an FPIES diagnosis. FPIES stands for food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, which is a systemic, non IgE-mediated allergic response to a specific trigger within food that presents in chronic or acute form. It affects small children and can be hard to diagnose. After finally having an FPIES diagnosis for her daughter, Angelika did a lot of research on the topic. She found the journey difficult and decided to write a book to help other parents facing this diagnosis manage the illness that lasts until a child usually outgrows it at ages 3-5. She says that while she did not have a peer to turn to discuss the illness, she hopes the book serves that purpose for others. The book is available on Amazon.

Mission: Try as Many NJ Hotdog Joints as Possible
NorthCaldwell resident, Anthony Corino, is on a mission to go to every hotdog joint in NJ on his motorcycle. He started his trek three summers ago and spends the warm weather driving all over to hot dog shacks in NJ all well near his office in NYC. He has been to 150 establishments so far and takes photos of each hotdog on his Instagram/Facebook pages @wheeliesandwieners. With each post he shares the dog’s brand and how it‘s prepared. Anthony has a giant map of NJ/NYC with pins for all the places he’s been. He says he has always loved hotdogs and he used to ride his bike to Rutt’s Hut as a child growing up in Lyndhurst. Not so coincidently, his favorite hotdog is at Rutt’s Hutt in Clifton, with Tommy’s in Elizabeth a close second. Additionally, aside from the hotdogs, he says many of the locations have great history and are visually interesting.
DOVE Matches Veterans Needing Kidneys with Live Donors
By Jackie SchatellSharyn
Kreitzer of Montclair has a unique take on kidney donation.
With over 100,000 people awaiting kidney donations in the US, where the average wait for a kidney from the national deceased donor wait list is three to five years, she feels that more people could be motivated to donate when they feel a connection to the recipient. She says there is a scarcity of supply. Thus, the former social worker who worked with kidney donors and recipients in a professional capacity, left her 25-year career in hospital settings to create DOVE, which matches living kidney donors with Veterans in need of the organ. DOVE’s goal is to find, educate, screen, and support prospective living donors and match them with a Veteran awaiting transplant.
She says that right now, there are 2,000 Vets waiting for kidneys. So far, in just over a year, she has facilitated 22 transplants. Many times, the donors fly across the country to not only donate a kidney, but to meet the recipients.
“I wanted to find a way to personalize kidney donation because I think it helps to engage more donors,” Sharyn says. “Many times, a person will get screened for a friend or family member and then leave the pool of potential donors if they aren’t a match, or if the person they came forward to help no longer needs a transplant. I feel that if they knew they were helping someone from a specific community like first responders, children, Vets, or another group, they might be more apt to stay in the donor pool.”
In addition, Sharyn says that there is a better chance of a successful kidney donation when it is done from a live donor, versus one that is deceased. Through DOVE, she hopes to not only build awareness about the need for kidney donations, but the need for live donors.
Sharyn knows first-hand how rewarding it is to be a live donor because this past summer she donated her own kidney. “It is exciting to see life get renewed
dovetransplant.orgbecause of the gift of a kidney – it is life transforming,” she says. However, she says that it is not only rewarding for the recipient, but also for the donor. “Being a donor builds self-esteem, donors feel proud, and many become advocates.” She adds, “DOVE is a donor-centric organization, and we keep the live donors engaged through various activities throughout the year to show them appreciation.”
Right now, Sharyn is working with a host of Vets including Michael Megna, a former Marine who developed kidney disease following 9/11, where he was one of the first responders. To learn more about Michael and to become a potential donor, go to dovetransplant.org and look under “Our Vets,” where you can also learn about other Vets awaiting kidneys.
There is no fee associated with DOVE’s endeavors and no salaries are paid. DOVE relies on the generosity of individual donors to ensure donors do not incur out-of-pocket costs related to any aspect of the donor process.
To donate, go to dovetransplant.org, under “Support.”

Livingston Sophomore is Honoring a Friend Through CHARITABLE TUTORING
By Jackie SchatellThe 2021 passing of 14-year-old Shiv Kulkarni has inspired his friend Siddharth “Sid” Sanjeev, a 10th grader at Livingston High School, to give back to the community through 6th grade math tutoring. He says that when the boys were in elementary school, Shiv used to help him with his math homework and studying, and that he wants to pass this along. “Shiv was a genius,” says Sid, “and he is the reason that I became good at math, so now I want to pass this on to my students.”
Calling his tutoring program “Sid for Shiv,” Sid has begun tutoring two groups of five students weekly, via Zoom on Fridays and Saturdays, where the students pay $10 a class. Sid says he plans to stay a topic ahead of what is being taught in school, so that the children he is tutoring are prepared for each lesson.
Sid is donating his tutoring fees in their entirety to a charity called Desi Rainbow Parents and Allies (desirainbow.org), which “works to provide affirming spaces for South Asian LGBTQ+ individuals and their families to talk about issues related to gender identity and sexual orientation.” Shiv’s mom, Shilpa Kulkarni, is an advocate of the organization. This is the second year that Sid is offering tutoring; last year, he did it for free. This is also the second year he has raised money for Desi Rainbow. Last year, he ran a fundraiser in honor of Shiv and raised $1700 for the organization.
He says he feels good about what he is doing and states, “Shiv was one of my closest friends, and there is nothing more devastating than losing a close friend. I knew I had to take initiative to do something in his honor to make sure Shiv is always remembered for his kindness and willing attitude for helping those in need.” He adds, “I hope I can carry the torch of knowledge through the years to come in this form for ‘Sid for Shiv,’ so as to make sure my friend is never forgotten.”
While Sid’s tutoring classes are full for this year, there will be spots open next year. He can be reached at sidforshiv@gmail.com.

Buyers Will Give Your Home a STANDING OVATION
By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan EpsteinRealtors
David Masor and Jim Chaconas with Keller Williams NJ Metro Group have devised a unique offering to put more money into sellers’ pockets. Instead of selling a home as is, HomeApplause will handle the entire process of updating and refreshing the home to achieve the best possible selling price.
After living in the same house for a number of years, many homeowners know their homes may need a bit of a makeover prior to selling. The process of hiring and managing contractors to do these updates can be quite overwhelming. They also many not have the funds to invest in this much needed work. This is where HomeApplause comes in.
With HomeApplause, this anxiety and inconvenience is taken away. Their amazing team handles it all—the design, project management, staging, and ultimately selling! Best of all, the cost of the updates are paid for after a successful close of sale.
What are the advantages of using HomeApplause instead of selling a house as is or hiring one’s own contractor and Realtor?
Jim Chaconas: We will make the process very easy and smooth. We are going to take a lot off the homeowner’s plate, with the number one benefit being that the homeowner is going to profit more from the sale.
David Masor: We manage the whole project, and we pay for all of the upfront costs. It is not an intimidating experience. We’re not knocking down walls or pulling permits… we’re doing simple stuff like pulling up old carpet, stripping old wallpaper, painting, and other projects to update the home. Ideally, in four weeks or less.
What is the process?
DM: We provide a free consultation and show comparisons to help educate the homeowner. We design the scope of work, prioritizing the important areas that are going to have the most impact—such as kitchens and bathrooms. We plan the budget and manage the contractors.
JC: We are real estate agents first, we know what finishes buyers are looking for and what updates will bring the most value.
DM: Once the home is ready, we market the property to get it sold quickly & for top dollar. We handle everything from beginning to end.
What makes your team qualified to handle every aspect of this process?
JC & DM: We are licensed Realtors and have personally flipped and sold many investment properties. This inspired us to seek a way to help homeowners effectively flip their own home. That is really our intention, and why we have curated a team of experienced project managers, interior designers, and stagers. All ready to help the homeowner with the little details that matter the most to the buyers.
HomeApplause’s expertise is in updating, refreshing, and selling homes with the ultimate goal of attracting buyers at the highest price possible.

LIVING LIFE AFTER COVID
“Covid was rough on everybody, but I was extremely unlucky since my cough caused me to tear muscles in my chest and side. I’ve pulled muscles before but I’ve been in so much pain, and my chest was very swollen. I kept coughing long after my Covid symptoms disappeared and my chest and back were still in pain. Months went by and I wasn’t healing; I mean, how do you rest an area that you use to breathe?” shares Peter S. of Bloomfield.
Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine has been successfully treating Covid “long-haulers” since the early days of the pandemic.
“I have protocols for headaches and ozone treatments that help to combat lasting fatigue and shortness of breath. Peter was the first person I saw whose infection caused a severe injury.” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc. “Normally with acute injuries, patients recover within a few weeks. Peter had been suffering for months, his body was simply refusing to heal.”
The human body is a selfhealing organism. When you scrape your knee, your blood will quickly work to clot and scab. Your liver has a unique ability to regenerate after injury, if you break a bone, there are specific cells that immediately begin to knit the edges back together.
Unfortunately there are also a number of factors that prohibit those regenerative cells from completing the task they were designed to do including; stress, age, lack of sleep and suffering from serious infection or disease.
Dr. Aleksandra shares her expertise. “In Peter’s case, his battle with Covid strongly affected his muscle tissue’s ability to heal and repair. Beyond the body just being terribly fatigued from fighting a very challenging infection, his cells were nearly depleted of oxygen. At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine I have several cutting-edge solutions that I use to treat injuries of this nature and at the forefront of those is O3 Renewing Therapy™.”
“I’ll be honest, I was skeptical at first.” jokes Peter. “She was talking about putting ozone into my body through my ears and I’m sure my eyes bugged out of my head; but I was out of options and so many people have had such incredible success with her treatments that I couldn’t say no. With each treatment I felt better and better. Not even 10 treatments in and I was back to playing pickleball! Thanks to Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, I’m living life again!”
Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine incorporates ozone therapy for many conditions. As an energized form of oxygen, ozone is far-reaching; having a positive, lasting impact on joints, muscles, tendons, cartilage, ligaments and tissues. When performed by
www.SashaAcupuncture.com
a licensed professional like Dr. Aleksandra, ozone has been proven to not only reduce inflammation but regrow new tissue. Which makes it a viable option for pain management and an optimal alternative to surgery. The result is enhanced and effective healing!
“I’ve seen Dr. Aleksandra for almost every ailment and condition since,” says Peter. “Now I check in every few weeks for maintenance, I know I make it sound like changing the oil on your car but that’s exactly what it is. Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of ordering custom new parts for my body so I plan on taking care of the one I have.”
Dr Aleksandra specializes in treating chronic pain and complicated conditions. “Those things that Western medical professionals deem untreatable and send you on your way with nothing but a prescription in hand—that’s where we do our best work. There are real solutions to your suffering, and they start here at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine.”

Designing the PERFECT KITCHEN
By Christine S. MaxwellTimeand attention to detail yield high-quality service and products. So believes Vincenzo Tersigni, the dedicated sole proprietor of Domus Kitchens in Fairfield, who often puts in long days to achieve these results. He frequently arrives at his office at dawn and communicates with European suppliers about the fine products he uses.
Then Tersigni proceeds with his regular workdays, which include all aspects of home renovations and new construction, primarily the design, selection of materials, measurements, delivery, and installation of kitchens and closets. His workday often ends at dusk.
A beautifully contemporary-designed kitchen adds value to the home. With more than 30 years of experience in the home improvement business, Tersigni helps customers design the kitchen of their dreams. He believes the kitchen, often the “heart of the home,” is a vital part of the house and is a place for family and friends to gather. With a warm and inviting design, the kitchen should be fully functional with modern conveniences for cooking and entertaining.
With his customers’ needs in mind, Terisigni has always sought the best products and colleagues to help him create the ideal spaces for his clients. Over the years, in addition to his own experience, he has developed strong relationships with
accomplished builders, contractors, real estate personnel, and architects locally and internationally. He has worked with the same European vendors, known for the craftsmanship and quality of their products, for more than 30 years.
Domus Kitchen shares a location with Ideal Tile and AF Supply Company for added convenience in planning that perfect kitchen. The three companies frequently work together in home improvement design and installation, giving customers an option of one-stop shopping. For example, Ideal Tile may supply black splashes for kitchens, and AF Supply may offer kitchen and other fixtures and hardware. “Our collaboration gives customers wider and immediate choices,” says Tersigni.

New Jersey Jackals Baseball Team Secures New Home at Landmark Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson
TheNew Jersey Jackals, a member team of the Frontier League, a Professional Baseball League of 16 teams and Partner League of Major League Baseball (MLB), today announced the team is relocating from Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, to its new, larger home at landmark Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson.
The Jackals will kick-off a 96-game season in May of 2023 at Hinchliffe, a 7,000-seat stadium that sits on a dramatic escarpment above Paterson’s National Historic Great Falls and surrounded by the city’s national historic district – the first planned industrial settlement in the nation in 1792. Hinchliffe is also one of two remaining ballparks where the segregated Negro Leagues played in the mid-20th century. The facility lay dormant for the past 20+ years but is now undergoing a dramatic restoration.
Al Dorso, the owner, and operator of the New Jersey Jackals, along with the city of Paterson, have exciting plans to improve the Hinchliffe field and venue, align with local businesses and bring additional entertainment to the venue, such as concerts, kids camps, traveling teams, training and exhibitions, holiday events and more. The stadium improvements are part of a larger $95 million project that includes a parking garage, restaurant with museum and nearby residential complex.
“We’re thrilled to have the Jackals in Paterson and equally pleased to be working alongside Al Dorso, a visionary, change agent and proven businessman with the leadership, acumen and experience to bring additional growth, prosperity and entertainment to our local community,” said Andre Sayegh, Mayor of Paterson.
“I was born and raised in Paterson and even though I ventured on, I still know this town like the back of my hand and have many fond memories,” said Dorso, “This is a great opportunity at the right time in my life to give back and add to the rich history of this region.

The Rising Stars of Shag86
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND MENTORSHIP SHAPING STYLISTS’ FUTURE
By Jessica Modrow, photos by Dan Epsteinis well-known for its hair services throughout the tri-state area and beyond. Expert cuts, color, and styling are complemented by highly trained professionals and a fivestar customer experience. But, a little known, yet critical aspect of the salon is its extensive future professional training program.
Shag86
Gerald Ferraro, founder/owner of Shag86, and Tom Harris, Artistic Director of Education recruit budding stylists to join their education program, in which they receive state-of-the-art training and mentorship from established professionals.
“My family has been in the industry for 60 years, and I’ve been in it for 28 years.
I have a passion to really guide the up-and-coming generation in the right direction,” said Ferraro. “Graduating from cosmetology school is just the first step. We take them from the newest level, and develop them into someone who is going to last 30 years in the industry and reach incomes they could never believe. In the end our stylists feel the training was well worth it in becoming a skilled professional that will take their career to a higher level.”
Harris, whose credentials also include Master Associate with John Paul Mitchell Systems, personally mentors and teaches the interns in the program.
Weekly 2.5-hour classes led by Harris are interactive, with demonstrations only making up a part of the lesson.
“After a demonstration, each intern is sent to their mannequins where they have to perform the haircut. While they’re cutting, I’m walking the room and redirecting them when things are’t correct–their hand position is off, their body position is off. What makes
us different is that aspect of mentorship, and that’s where the learning takes place.”
Ferraro and Harris are looking for “serious-minded professionals who want to go the extra mile to be great,” explained Harris. Currently, the rising stars of Shag86 include two recent graduates to first level, Brandon Brindisi and Samantha Moore; one who is currently in the middle of the program, Melisa Ozdemir; and three up-and-coming stylists, Vianna Giordano, Brianna Doran and Mimi Pastrana.
“The last stage of the training program is when the intern gets their own chair, and they can cut, color, and style, and it’s at a lesser price to the client. And it opens up the ability for them to work on live people, and it’s all guided by me,” said Harris.
“They can’t do a haircut, color, without telling me what they’re doing and what technique they’re going to use. It’s also reaching people that maybe would like to try being a model to these young stylists, knowing they're getting a great haircut overseen by the artistic director.”

Pets in Need of a Forever Home Adopt Layla
This pocket pitty, known as Layla, showed up at a firehouse in Newark in early February 2022. Her tail was mangled, had a cut on her head and her muzzle was bruised as if it was taped or zip tied shut.
Brick City Rescue responded to the firehouse call and we took this sad girl under our wing. Layla’s tail had to be amputated due to the amount of damage that was done. But that doesn’t stop Layla from “strutting her stuff”!
This beauty is smaller than most of her mixed breed, but she has muscles! She loves to play with tennis balls and squeaky balls alike. She will walk to the park with a tennis ball in her mouth and she will play keep-away. She likes you to think she won’t give the ball back, but she eventually gives in so you can throw it again.
Layla loves car rides! During her walks, she will approach your car and you
have to tell Layla that you are not going for a ride right now. Silly Layla has even jumped in to a strangers car in anticipation of a ride.
Layla loves people. She will meet a new person and immediately give her belly for some rubbing. Layla is treat motivated, so you can pretty much train her to do anything. While Layla is respective of children, she would do better in a home where the children know how to give Layla her space to relax. We suggest children over 10.
Layla’s stats: Weighs approx 45 pounds, UTD on vaccines, spayed, housebroken, crate trained (although she will protest for a few minutes), loves car rides (excellent passenger) and food motivated. Layla prefers a quieter environment. While Layla does prefer to be the Queen of the Castle, she is able to be walked with other dogs (pack walks) and is not reactive to other dogs on walks as long as they are not in her space/face.

Getting A New Dog Over The Holidays?
Getting
a new dog this holiday season? Consider the following to ensure you and your new best friend are a perfect match.
THE BREED
Each dog is unique, but there are some common traits across breeds that can make them more or less comfortable in a particular environment. Don’t get a working breed dog, like a shepherd or a pointer if you have a difficult time with physical activities. And, don’t get an Alaskan sled dog if you live in a small apartment in New Jersey.
YOUR LIFESTYLE
Do you like being active? Do you have a yard? Do you have kids? Do you work from home? Are you home on the weekends? Do you travel a lot? What kind of financial and time commitment are you willing to make?
YOUR EXPERTISE
Do you have any prior experience with dogs? Are you able to handle a more challenging temperament?
CONSIDER YOUR INTENT
Are you getting a dog to lounge on the couch with you or work a farm? Are you seeking a playmate for your kids, companion for your morning runs, or a partner for agility trials?
THE SOURCE
You can get your dog at a shelter, a breeder, a friend, or a local posting or advertisement. Be very wary of unqualified breeders and other sources. Many dogs are treated so poorly that their temperament and health does not reflect their breed. Unless you’re looking for a working dog, we suggest you begin your search at a shelter.

A Store for Moms, by a Mom
Marie Khoury offers a one-stop-shop for moms at her Livingston Town Center store, Pink Jewels.
By Deborah Engel, photos by Dan EpsteinMarieKhoury grew up working at her father’s retail store and accompanying him to vendor shows, so it’s no surprise she now owns her own shop, Pink Jewels, located in the Livingston Town Center.

Pink Jewels—A Store for Moms, by a Mom
from the
“It’s just in my DNA,” she said, reflecting on working at her father’s store during summer vacations, weekends, and the busy holiday season. “Retail has always been a passion of mine. It’s a fire that’s always been inside me.”
Pink Jewels opened in 2009 and is celebrating 13 years this November. Don’t be fooled by the name; the shop carries clothing and home goods in addition to jewelry and accessories. Marie’s vision is to offer a one-stopshop for her customers who are mostly moms. “What I strive for now is to have my customers come here and get everything they need in one store,” Marie explained.
Marie understands how busy a mom’s life can be, having a five-year old and twin four-year-olds. She tries to stock merchandise that allow clients to buy everything they need for an occasion. For example, if a friend’s party is on the calendar, her customer can come in and buy an outfit and a birthday or host gift all in one place.
“We moms are limited on time; we are always running around. If you can get it all done in one spot, why not?” she said.
Pink Jewels continues to evolve to serve its customers. Most recently, Marie launched an e-commerce website offering clothing and accessories at discounted prices. Clients can buy an item in any size or color on pink-jewels. com and it will ship directly from the vendor.
Marie also values offering personalized customer service. Pink Jewels provides free local delivery, free gift wrap, and she tries to go “above and beyond” to help her busy clientele.
This fall/winter season, Marie is excited for the jackets and boots hitting the store, as well as the Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales. She said fashion continues to be comfortable, as people grew accustomed to during the pandemic, but that “we’re slowly moving out of leggings and sweatpants.”
Marie also appreciates how her customers supported her and Pink Jewels during the pandemic. “Being in a small town, it’s all about community. Everyone was here for me. That’s why I survived,” she said gratefully. “My customers were calling me, buying things, buying gift certificates. They saw the effort I was making [to save my business], and they were putting in effort to keep me alive. It was a team effort.”

SENIOR LIVING
Falls Can Have Severe Health Ramifications for Older Adults
Trips,
stumbles, and minor tumbles may not seem like a big deal when you’re younger. But, for seniors, any fall has the potential to result in severe injury or a health crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a senior over the age of 65 falls every second of every day. One in five falls ends in serious injury. Taking precautions are vital to avoid the potentially debilitating consequences seniors can face.
• Make sure your prevention strategies address your individual risk factors. List out your personal risk factors, look at which ones can be changed, and create a plan to decrease those risks.
• Get regular physical exams to check for any risk factors or problems that could lead to falls. Be honest about any concerns you have and discuss any side effects of your medication.
• Wear well-fitting, comfortable, wide, and flat shoes for a stable base.
• Stay active at an appropriate level for your health and ability. Try lower intensity workouts like yoga, tai chi, walking, swimming, water aerobics, and weight training, especially for leg muscles.
• Work with a physical therapist to prevent falls or to heal from injury, especially if you have health risk factors. A physical therapist can help you improve balance and build strength while considering your individual needs.
• Assess your environment and take steps to make it safer. Consider features like grab bars in the bathroom, secure handrails on stairs, a more accessible tub or shower, and plenty of light.
Also, avoid small rugs that can bunch up or catch on your shoes, and remove clutter to keep floors and spaces clear.
• If needed, be sure you use devices like canes, walkers, and wearable emergency fall devices.
Have a plan in place in case you fall and know what to do and how to get help. For seniors, falling can be a significant concern in trying to stay safe and healthy. But falling isn’t an inevitable part of growing older. By taking these steps to lessen your risk of falling and being prepared in the event of a fall will go a long way toward living a healthy, fulfilling life throughout your retirement.

Quality of Life is What Matters Most November
is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month and the perfect time to explain the difference between hospice and palliative care.
Most people are familiar with what hospice care is—care provided to those with a terminal diagnosis to ensure comfort and quality of care at end-of-life. This care is provided when there are no longer curative options, or the patient chooses not to pursue curative measures. However, most people don’t realize that hospice care can begin early and offer months of assistance and support—a benefit not often fully utilized.
Palliative care is typically introduced earlier in the course of a serious illness as patients are usually continuing to pursue aggressive treatments. Patients do not have to be terminal to qualify for palliative care. With a chronic, or life-threatening illness, like cancer, cardiac disease such as CHF, COPD, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or ALS, quality of life can be dependent on managing symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, depression, and difficulty sleeping. Palliative care helps to relieve or eliminate such symptoms.
The team at Journey Hospice in West Caldwell embraces the philosophy that quality of life matters most. Facing a serious illness can be overwhelming for the entire family—that’s why making important decisions early on and having a care team that advocates for the patient ensures that their end-of-life journey is a positive one.

Food for Your Brain
Eating walnuts may improve concentration, memory, and comprehension speed. The brain boost seems to come from walnuts’ high antioxidant contest as well as manganese and copper. To get the benefit enjoy 12-24 walnut halves daily.
Older adults who ate about two cups of strawberries every day improved their spatial memory and word recognition according to a study. The researchers also found that blueberries may have similar effects. Fresh and frozen give the same benefits.
Eating more fish and less meat as part of a Mediterranean diet can help slow cognitive decline in older adults.

Eye Care as You Age Just
as the rest of our body ages, so do the eyes. The following common diseases and conditions are associated with aging and can be detected with proper monitoring. A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the best way to detect them, even when not experiencing any issues with your sight.
Cataract. People who experience this clouding of the lens in the eye often report increased glare and fading of colors.
Diabetic Eye Disease. A complication of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness, its most common form is diabetic retinopathy, which happens when the disease damages small blood vessels inside the retina.
Dry Eye. Dry eye can feel like stinging and burning and can lead to blurred vision or even vision loss if left untreated.
Glaucoma. A group of diseases that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and result in vision loss and blindness.
Age-Related Muscular Degeneration. ADM is a disease that blurs the sharp, central vision needed for “straight-ahead” activities such as reading, sewing, and driving. This disease affects the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail.

Combining the Latest Treatments and Technologies in Dental Care
RoseAnn
Giannella, DMD, PA, has maintained a dental practice in Essex County since 2001, treating patients from ages 3 through seniors.
Dr. Giannella's approach to dentistry is a "whole body" approach. Her dentistry treats the patient's overall health.
Dental disease whether it is gum disease, cavities, or missing teeth, all contribute to patients' overall health or lack thereof. Dr. Giannella believes that treating any dental diseases or problems in the mouth reduces inflammation in the body, thereby optimizing the overall health of the patient.
Studies are showing that we are living much longer, so we need to keep our mouths and our bodies as healthy as possible! Getting regular dental care is an important aspect of healthcare!

Nutrition & Sleep
plenty of methods to achieve better sleeping
and one of the most potent methods is nutritional. A healthy diet can mean the difference between peaceful slumber and sleepless nights.
Lack of sleep can prompt you to start making bad dietary decisions. This relationship works in reverse. Having a proper intake of a wide variety of vitamins and minerals has been shown to improve sleep quality. If you’re missing a key vitamin or other nutrients, you may start to have issues sleeping.
Why is this? Studies are still being done on this, but we do know that sleep is closely related to the complex chemistry in our brain. We also know that getting the right vitamins and minerals improves the function of that brain chemistry—therefore a bad diet can lead to you feeling gross not just physically, but mentally. Our brain releases certain chemicals when it’s time to sleep to help us drift off. If we’re missing the important components of those chemicals, our brain is going to struggle to properly turn itself off and rest. And a brain without rest is going to be an unhappy brain.
Conversely, diets that are too high in carbs may make you feel drowsy during the day but can ruin your sleep when night rolls around. And we all know what diets that are too heavy in sugar and caffeine can do to you—these substances are some of
the worst offenders when it comes to ruining sleep schedules. Chef V juice cleanses tend to be so great for helping sleep.
The best diets for sleep are those that are filled with fruits and vegetables (and all those amazing vitamins contained within). Not only does a Chef V cleanse ensure you’re getting a wide range of veggies, but the fact that they are raw means that fewer of those key sleep vitamins have been removed in the prep process. This means your brain is getting everything it needs for a proper shutdown.
Chef V cleanses are also a great way to give your body a break from carbs, sugar, and caffeine, so you don’t need to worry about any of these substances playing havoc with your ability to get some shuteye. Chef V cleanses are a great way to feel energetic and focused during the day, and still, get plenty of sleep at night.

A Comforting Concierge Dental Practice
By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan EpsteinAtBagoff-Levenbrook Dental Arts, keeping patients happy and healthy in a soothing environment is the top priority. Founder Robert Bagoff, DDS and his colleague Steven Levenbrook, DMD specialize in family, implant and cosmetic dentistry. Through hundreds of hours of continuing education, they offer their patients gentle care using state-of-the-art technology. This includes a computerized anesthesia device to numb only specific areas of the mouth, low-dose intra-oral radiography, digital imaging of the teeth and gums, and various laser-assisted treatments.
Along with technology, Drs. Bagoff and Levenbrook use good old-fashioned communication to put their patients at ease. According to Dr. Bagoff, “Most people’s fear of the dentist comes from
fear of pain—fear that they won’t be fully numb during a procedure. We talk our patients through every procedure that we feel they need, and we take as much time as need to help them to feel comfortable with what we’re going to do.”
No procedure is too big or too small— from smile-improving porcelain laminates to full implant dentistry. Dr. Bagoff explains, “Implants are root substitutes. We have a 3-D cone beam scan and a digital oral scan right in our office, which enable us to perform the most conservative dental implant surgery possible.” Both Drs. Bagoff and Levenbrook teach in the Continuing Dental Education implant program at the NYU College of Dentistry.
In addition to state-of-the-art technology and techniques, Bagoff Dental Arts
also offers non-dental services for out-of-town and international patients. “Concierge services have been part of this practice for over 25 years,” states Dr. Bagoff. He adds, “We have patients coming from Israel and Italy, and we can arrange Uber rides for them, and we also make restaurant and sightseeing recommendations.”
“When patients first walk into our reception area, they will see a fish tank, a fireplace and a TV. We really want everyone to feel calm and comfortable here,” says Dr. Bagoff.

Improving and Preserving Vision are the Goals of this Practice
By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan EpsteinDr.
Kurt Jackson, founder of Jackson Eye Care, LLC, in Livingston, is all about healthy eyes. A general ophthalmologist since 2007 and a retina specialist since 2009, Dr. Jackson provides the latest and most effective surgical and pharmacological treatments for his patients.
His caring and professional manner creates an environment where patients feel comfortable and cared for, and his ability to speak fluent Spanish as well as English opens up his practice to a larger clientele. Here, Dr. Jackson explains what he offers in more detail:
What types of retinal services are offered by Jackson Eye Care?
We offer all types of retina care including diagnostic tests, examinations and procedures. Eye injections are performed for a variety of retinal conditions. Laser treatments for various problems and surgical intervention for more serious retinal problems are also provided by Jackson Eye Care.
We treat conditions like diabetic retinopathy, dry and wet macular degeneration, retinal tears and retinal detachments. Evaluations of flashes and floaters are commonly performed as they can be an indication of a more serious problem.
Please tell us a little about each one of these procedures and how they benefit patients.
Eye injections known as intravitreal injections involve delivering medication directly into the eye of a patient. It is an office procedure that involves inserting a very tiny needle into the eye to deliver the selected medication.
Laser treatment is done to treat a variety of conditions that affect the retina. Conditions such as retinal holes or tears and diabetic retinopathy can be treated with laser.
Similarly, surgery is done to repair things like macular holes, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and a host of problems that arise from diabetes. All these procedures are performed to help preserve and even improve someone’s vision.
Why is it critical to choose an experienced and highly-skilled vitreo-retinal surgeon like yourself to perform these types of surgeries?
Choosing an experienced surgeon improves your chances for a successful procedure. An experienced physician treating your condition has the ability to handle the nuances that may be specific to your manifestation of the problem.

The Power of a Beautiful Smile is Magical
and daughter, Dr. Linda Stone, and Dr. Vanna Stone, share a dental practice at Gentle Caring Dentistry in Livingston. Established by Dr. Linda, Gentle Caring Dentistry reflects her lifelong passion for providing quality dental work with compassionate care.
Mother
Dr. Vanna joined her mother in practice after completing dental school. “There was never a specific moment I realized I wanted to become a dentist. I was constantly exposed to my mom’s love and passion for her work and soaked it up throughout my childhood.”
Gentle Caring Dentistry’s goal is to provide the highest quality care for each patient in a relaxed setting. Further, they believe in educating their patients. “Taking the time to explain things and involve people into their own treatment decision is so important for helping reduce fear and making sure each patient is getting the right care for them,” remarks Dr. Vanna.
Both dentists believe that the power of a beautiful smile is magical. Dr. Linda will never forget how much a smile transformed a person’s life. She recalled a director of a corporation who was embarrassed by her teeth and never smiled so she was perceived as being a cold person. After achieving a beautiful smile people actually treated her differently.
Being passionate about your work and staying abreast of the latest industry developments is vital for a successful business. Says Dr. Linda, “Your work reflects you. Love what you do.”

The Kleshas
The
Kleshas in yogic philosophy are obstacles which prevent humans from leading a healthy lifestyle. In both Yoga and Ayurveda we view the body that is out of balance as experiencing dis-ease; there is potentially a physical, spiritual or emotional imbalance and this downward cycle of false notions is known as the Kleshas. When obstacles are in our path, they prevent us from finding this sense of balance and connection with self and others.
5 Kleshas:
• Avidya – ignorance
• Asmita – ego reliance
• Raga – attachment
• Dvesha – aversion
• Abhinevesha – fear of death
When we break down the Kleshas we must ask ourselves what creates this ignorance? Ignorance creates separation from the present, others and ourselves. The effect of feeling disconnected is that we rely upon our ego self. We compare ourselves with others in an unhealthy manner.
When the ego is in an unhealthy state of being this then leads one to rely upon external sources to happiness. This creates an unhealthy attachment to objects, people, and situations. The ego begins to reject things that do not support a sense of power and the mind then creates an unnecessary aversion. This all leads to a feeling of separation and ultimately fear of death, when we cannot appreciate there is more to this existence than the “now”.
A dedicated yogic lifestyle offers us the opportunity to remove these illusions and find sincere truth and acceptance of ourselves and others.

The vibrant and exciting atmosphere for all ages helps patients feel at ease as soon as they walk in the door. “Our goal is to reduce anxiety when visiting the dental office and make every experience a pleasant one,” states Dr. Golestani.

LightPort Offers Personalized Exercise Programs for Patients
By Jackie SchatellAtLightPort Physical Therapy, we design individual therapeutic exercise programs to optimize health and a sense of wellbeing. We specialize in programs that improve flexibility, joint mobility, stability, and balance, as well as aerobic conditioning, and coordination.
First, we do a thorough assessment to see what is needed focusing on functional limitations, disabilities, and physical impairments to best prescribe the correct exercises. After several weeks of reconditioning exercise, we look at improvements in the realigned muscle’s performance, strength, and endurance.
It is important to note that after any new exercise, there may be some soreness, and muscle adaptations are expected and normal. If you feel sore, we encourage our patients to stretch more during warmups before exercising, and/or use cold packs to soothe sore muscles.
In the short term, you will see neuro-muscular adaptations, which can be attributed to improved coordination in the muscles. In the long term, you may see skeletal muscle adaptations and increased muscle tone.
To increase strength, we recommend resistance exercises. The rule of thumb is to start with one set of 10 repetitions with resistance using an elastic resistance band. You should be able to do this with good form. This can be increased to 3 sets of 10 repetitions and for endurance, you can do one set of 20 repetitions.
We recommend avoiding exercise if you feel pain or
in joints or if you have severe cardiopulmonary
Always consult with a medical doctor to see if
is appropriate for you.
Sculpt Your Body Into the Shape You Want
A COOL WAY TO GET RID OF FAT DEPOSITS
By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epsteina non-invasive fat reduction treatment, has become one of the most popular choices in the country for body contouring. It can be used on the upper arms, abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, chin, jaw, breasts and back, which are common areas where fat tends to concentrate.
CoolSculpting®,
“We use paddles that have different shapes that are basically designed to naturally fit particular areas of stubborn fat,” says Ed Fritz, the owner of Montclair Rejuvenation Center in West Caldwell and Verona, which offers this quick and pain-free treatment for its clients. “Once those paddles are attached, we start the freezing process.”
Cold temperatures can damage and kill fat cells, and CoolSculpting®, he explains, can result in a 20-25% reduction in the size of the area clients choose to target. Over the next two to four months, your body will naturally absorb and eliminate those treated cells.
“We can do two areas per 35-minute session, which cuts treatment time in half, and clients can have multiple sessions a day,” says Ed. “So, they can target many different areas of the body, depending on their unique needs and preferences. We also recommend doing a second treatment, anywhere from six to 10 weeks after the first treatment.”
Montclair Rejuvenation, he says, is ranked in the top five centers in the state for CoolSculpting® and he believes number one (or possibly number two) in Northern New Jersey. Free consultations are offered with one of its four CoolSculpting® certified professionals.
“Sometimes people have completely unrealistic expectations, and that’s something that we really make sure we address,” says Ed. For example, CoolSculpting® is not a replacement for weight loss, but instead can enhance weight loss by spotreducing areas that have accumulated fat that has not gone away with diet modifications.
The med spa offers many other state-of-the-art aesthetic services such as Botox®, dermal fillers, and PDO thread, which rejuvenates facial features. The Center also provides innovative platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments, microneedling, photofacials, HydraFacial MD®, and Aquagold® Fine Touch™.
In addition to aesthetic services, its wellness services includes nutritional counseling, acupuncture, massages, and FemiLift vaginal revitalization.

Dr. Zach Gokhman of The Silverstrom Group is No Cookie Cutter Dentist
By Cynthia Burns, Photos by Dan EpsteinZachGokhman, DDS has joined The Silverstrom Group, the award-winning dental practice led by Drs. David and Gary Silverstrom. Here, Dr. Gokhman, who was raised in Livingston, provides insight into his credentials and approach to oral wellness.
You received your degree from New York University–College of Dentistry and completed your residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. How will your training be an asset to The Silverstrom Group?
Newark Beth Israel’s dental residency program is the oldest of its kind in the country. Its General Practice Residency (GPR) Program continues to lead dental education. Every specialty is represented. I performed oral surgery, root canals, implants, veneers, braces and Invisalign, among other procedures. The quality of the dentists there gave me a solid foundation. It also helped me learn to think. Patients may have similar dental issues, but other factors such as lifestyle, general health and medications determine the treatment plan. I am welltrained and well-equipped to carry out a number of procedures.
What advances in dentistry have helped you excel in your profession?
Dentistry has changed incredibly, mostly attributed to the use of digital equipment such as scanners and 3D printers. I describe myself as a nerd when it comes to new materials and new technology. A newer tool that is useful in preventive
dentistry is the DIAGNOdent™ System. This pen-like device allows me to use a laser to shine into the grooves of the teeth to determine the earliest signs of decay. Preventive treatment can help save the tooth before the decay spreads. Another big advancement has been same day dentistry. Crowns can be done in one visit, rather than over several weeks.
Do you share a philosophy about your approach to dentistry with the other dentists in the practice?
Within The Silverstrom Group we have a saying: “no dentistry is the best dentistry.” We take pride in a conservative approach while adopting new technology. This doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned traditional methods. We choose the best treatment to achieve the best outcome for the patient.
What excites you about dentistry?
The ways in which dentistry has changed—and it’s just the beginning. I’m not a cookie cutter dentist. There are so many new ways to practice dentistry more successfully and more conservatively. I like the challenge of incorporating new techniques and materials.

GREAT CONNECTIONS
By Barry FarberHow do you make the most of every contact you meet? How can you gain the trust of your contacts so they’ll start connecting you to all the people in their network? The greatest networkers have a simple, practical system for making a lasting impression and building a strong foundation for future success. Here are some of the ways to do it:
START OFF STRONG: Give new contacts a firm handshake and look them in the eye. An upbeat attitude and a sincere eagerness to meet them will be reciprocated.
LISTEN MORE THAN TALK: You can’t really start to build a relationship until you’re locked into the other person’s hot buttons and listening to what makes them tick.
ASK QUESTIONS TO BUILD RAPPORT AND UNDERSTANDING: Once you hear their answer, do you have them go into greater detail? Great networkers know how to move the conversation forward with the right open-ended questions.
FIND COMMON GROUND: Doing so allows you to connect with contacts on a deeper level, whether it’s sports, hobbies, or family interests. When my customers start talking about their kids and how they are interested in the same activities as my own, the conversation flows.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK: When the person sees you’ve invested time into understanding their business, there is a certain level of trust established right away. Even better is when the homework you did brings new ideas and additional value to your contact.
SELL WHAT THEY SELL: You know who your customer is, but do you know who your customer’s customers are and how you can help sell more to them? Help your customers build their businesses, and they’ll end up building yours.
OFFER OUTSIDE HELP: Can you offer a resource–say, a personal trainer or a good book–that assists them in an area outside of what you sell? Going out of your way to help can get you in the door and keep you connected.
KEEP YOUR NETWORK STRONG: Surround yourself with people your contacts would want to meet. I am always thinking about the company my contacts keep. It tells me a great deal about their intelligence and integrity.
BE TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE: People cannot connect with you when you’re trying to be someone else. Being honest about what you do, who you are and what you believe in says a lot about your character.
FOLLOW UP AND FOLLOW THROUGH: In the world of networking, connections and building relationships, this is the glue that holds it all together.
Nothing really new here–it’s common sense. And guess what? Common sense isn’t so common anymore, but it’s what the best networkers have.
