Hersh Children’s Center is Completed at Overlook Medical Center
A
tlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center recently marked the completion the Hersh Children’s Center, which centralizes the hospital’s pediatric emergency and inpatient services into one convenient, family-friendly space. The Hersh Children’s Center is funded, in part, by a $2 million grant from the Dorothy B. Hersh Foundation, and a $2.5 million pledge from the Nicholas J. and Anna K. Bouras Foundation. The new nearly 12,000 square-foot center brings together the Meri and Sol Barer Inpatient Pediatric Center (formerly housed on Overlook’s sixth floor) and the Michael Gordon Reeves Pediatric Emergency Department, for better coordinated care of patients, ages 0-21. The new pediatric emergency department is fully equipped to handle the full range of pediatric conditions, with streamlined care to ease stress on the family. For patients who require a stay, the new inpatient unit offers comforting, special touches like sleep accommodations for parents, family lounges and a play area with skylights and plentiful windows.

4th Grade Best Friends Create Charitable Business Chatham Athletic Boosters Club Donates to Covid Relief Food Distribution Program
T
he Chatham Athletic Boosters Club donated $5,000 to benefit the Chatham United Methodist Church Covid Relief Food Distribution program on the final night of the 18th Annual Cougar Classic basketball tournament that was held at Chatham High School. The funds were raised during the Classic. Chatham Borough Council member Len Resto, who helps run the food pantry, and Rev. Jeffrey Markay of CUMC received the donation from Adam Drum, president of the Chatham Athletic Boosters, Chatham Athletic Director Mo Abdelaziz and booster members Ed Leskauskas and Jody Frohnapfel. “We are extremely grateful for this donation as it means we can provide fresh produce, milk and eggs to the food insecure during a winter where produce isn’t plentiful and Covid and inflation continue to add to the misery faced by many,” says Len. 6

ight 4th graders who have been friends since preschool have started a charitable business called JamminBraceletz where they sell personalized handmade bracelets and donate a portion of the profits to a different charity each month. Their parents say they thought starting this business “would be a great social exercise to give the girls something proactive to do off their electronics during the pandemic.” This winter, in their first month in business, the girls sold 140 bracelets, which go for $6 to $7 each, for a total of $1200. People can also donate more than this to the causes. The young entrepreneurs donated $500 to the Ronald McDonald house in December, and plan to donate to the Livingston-based pediatric cancer charity Trialblazers in January, and to the American Heart Association in February. The girls: Jordyn, Ava, Madison, Miley, Izzie, Carolyn, Lily, and Zoe say they “enjoy making the bracelets,” which can be purchased on Etsy at Etsy/shop/JamminBraceletz, on Instagram @JamminBraceletz, and via Venmo at Lauren-Merel.
Paper Mill Playhouse is Now Accepting Video Auditions from Students for Summer Training Programs
P
aper Mill Playhouse is now accepting audition videos from students ages 10-18 that are interested the 2022 summer training programs, which include the Playhouse’s Summer Musical Theater Conservatory or Musical Theater Intensive. Now in its 27th year, the 2022 Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Musical Theater Conservatory will take place from June 27 to July 30 at Paper Mill Playhouse and the Paper Mill Studios in Milburn. Students will be offered live training Monday through Friday for five weeks culminating in the annual New Voices Concert that will be live on the Paper Mill stage. Numerous winners and nominees of the 2022 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star who won scholarships to attend the Conservatory will also be appearing. Berkeley Heights Senior Wins Top Prize at State Art Show
E
ileen Bonacci of Berkeley Heights won two top honors at the 55th annual New Jersey Senior Citizen Art Show. She was among 12 artists from Union County who were selected as award winners in the show. Bonacci won the Best in Show by a Professional, and 1st Place, Oil by a Professional artist, for her painting, “Day at the Beach.” She previously won 1st Place for the same painting at the Union County Senior Art Show.
Chatham Eagle Scout Creates Boardwalk for St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Rescue Dogs
C
hatham resident and Eagle Scout, Lucine Basralian, designed and led a team of fellow scouts to create a boardwalk to bridge a path on a dog walking trail for St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare rescue dogs that are being rehabilitated to learn to enjoy the outdoors. St. Hubert’s will use the path to take the dogs to sensory gardens, and campers will use the path during the summer. Lucine says she is proud of herself for completing her project and is thankful to all who helped her. Her mom Daniele says, “Scouting is fantastic and is a way to build great skills and character.” Lucine is a part of BSA Troop 280, an all-girls troop for ages 11 to 17, who live in Chatham, Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Madison, Morristown, New Providence and Summit. Moms Create Programming for Multicultural Families By Jackie Schatell
W
hen Maria Jose Orgeira, Paola Acosta, Patricia Fontan, Teresita Usme, all of Summit, with a shared experience of coming from an international background and having lived abroad for most of their lives, began the process of figuring out all of the things available through the town and school system for their children, they realized that other families, particularly ones with a language barrier, from low-income homes, multicultural families, or with children with special needs were also having trouble. They set out to do something about it by creating Empowering Kids Organization (EKO), which has become a valuable resource for kids who may not otherwise have access to academic and arts enrichment programs. EKO has now served over 191 participants since its inception in 2019, created 11 programs, and raised $56,000 in donations. “We started to see that many kids, especially from bilingual families or for whom English was not their first language, were not trying out for school teams and plays,” says Paola. The group figured 8

there was a big chance many of those parents hadn’t heard about available programs or were not aware of tryout dates. The women identified that two of the main factors were the language barrier and a lack of connection to the school community and local culture. So, EKO began acting as a resource guiding the families through all of the necessary steps and giving them information to make such opportunities accessible and get more kids signed up. In addition, EKO began creating their own after-school programs to meet the needs of the grades 4-12 population they serve including art, theater, science, and ESL classes. Once these classes were underway, parents asked for an ESL class, and one for children with special needs. EKO now offers English Immersion Classes; Cultural Activities; a Summer Camp; an Art Program through The Visual Arts Center (VAC-NJ); Comic Improvisation Classes and Workshops through Vivid Stage Theatre; Math, English, and Science for ESL Learners; Personal GED Tutoring classes; and February 2022
supports existing Early Literacy and College Awareness Programs. “By creating our classes, and resources, we are able to connect families who are facing isolation not only with programs but with other families and the Summit community as well,” says Paola. Kids in the EKO programs are now creating their own school clubs and are signing up for plays and advanced art classes on their own. They are getting scholarships and winning awards. “Our resources are helping to improve their life experiences and build confidence,” says Paola. “Our students are finding their places in classes where they can shine, be curious, and believe in their potentials.” Paola says, “It is so great to see a shy child in one for our improv class making people laugh or in a skit, whose talent wouldn’t have been noticed otherwise. It is incredibly rewarding seeing a student empowered to try new things and pursuing their dreams. By working locally, we are also building a stronger community one program at a time.”

A Woman’s Non-Profit is Making a Difference, One Kind Gesture at a Time By Jackie Schatell
W
hen Laurie Liming, of Berkeley Heights, was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a terrible shock for her, but one thing that stood out from all of the darkness was how much kindness she felt all around her. After surviving her ordeal, Laurie wanted to give back, so she started Silver Liming, a non-profit with the motto, “Making a difference to local families one KIND gesture at a time.” Since then, the charitable group has made a difference in the lives of 2733 people through 2600 kind gestures. “We are just trying to give something good when things are hard,” she says. Laurie heard a poem about a starfish, where a small boy was tossing starfish on the sand back into the ocean so as to make a difference for each one of them. This poem inspired the five arms of her charity, which are: Charity Begins at Home, Care for The Caregiver, Compassionate Hands, Community of Support, and Cheer for Our Cherubs. Through these areas of service, people can ask for help for themselves or others and those who need the help will receive an act of kindness. Acts have run the gamut from sending over a babysitter, nurse, or housekeeper to provide a reprieve for a caregiver, to handing out backpacks full of warm gloves, hats, and necessities to homeless children, or buying a computer for a child with cancer for virtual schooling. The recipients do not have to have cancer, they just have to need an act of kindness. “When I was having chemo, knowing that I didn’t have to worry about making dinner for my family was a blessing,” says Laurie, whose friends often sent over meals. “I knew that I wanted to be able to do this for others.” Laurie says she doesn’t do all of this alone. Her board members are the backbone of the foundation. She receives donations via her website silverliming.org, Venmo @Silver-Liming, and through word of mouth. She also has many volunteers including student and teen ambassadors, who help out. She says those interested in volunteering are always welcome to reach out to silverliming@gmail.com. “We can’t take away people’s struggles, but we can make a difference to their story with kindness,” says Laurie.

“Inside Out” Exhibit Showcasing Artists from JSDD’s WAE Center
K
ick-off the new year with the West Orange Arts Council’s first show of 2022, the JSDD WAE Center’s “Inside Out” Exhibit. This is a hybrid art experience to be viewed online or by appointment. On display is the work of over 20 WAE Center artists whom are self-driven and self-taught. This genre of work is referred to as “Outsider Art,” meaning that the artist is not formally trained yet still create from an organic place of knowledge and experience. The visual representations of each artist’s own raw experiences, thoughts, and feelings communicate their perceptions of the world around them, in varied and vibrant form. JSDD’s (Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled) WAE (Wellness, Art & Enrichment) Center is a nonprofit organization and a holistic and expressive arts learning center for adults with IDD. In addition to fine arts programming, the WAE Center provides an environment where members learn, create, express themselves, and develop meaningful relationships. JSDD’s WAE Center offers programs in writing, poetry, painting, film, music and more. The show is on view at the West Orange Arts Center located at 551 Valley Road in West Orange. Point of Know Return: KANSAS PERFORMANCE
K
ansas marks the 40th anniversary of the release of their classic album Point of Know Return (“Dust in the Wind”) by performing the iconic recording in its entirety as well as other Kansas favorites. With a legendary career spanning nearly five decades, KANSAS has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. Traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail Former Chatham resident, Jennifer White Fischer will present a talk on traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail to be held on Tuesday, February 8 at 7pm at the Library of the Chathams. Through her photographs, she will tell the exciting story of the Corps of Discovery’s adventures in the early 1800’s as they explored the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, crossed the Bitterroot Mountains and continued on to the Pacific Ocean.

College Savings Plans and New Jersey PERFECT TOGETHER—STARTING IN 2022 By Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF/CGMA
T
he recently signed New Jersey College Affordability Act, Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF supported by Governor Murphy, Senate President Sweeney, and Assembly Speaker Coughlin, will help New Jersey families who are saving and paying for college, as well as for those who are paying off their student loans. With the signing of the law, which was unanimously approved by the Senate, New Jersey becomes the 35th state that offers a tax benefit for contributions to an approved 529 college savings plan. This is part of a plan to make college more affordable.
The new law will allow for a deduction of up to $10,000 per year for contributions to the NJ Better Education Trust or NJBEST, but would be limited to those households with taxable income of $200,000 or less. It goes in effect for contributions made in tax year 2022. 529 plans are effective savings vehicles as the contributions grow tax free and, upon withdrawal, assuming the funds are used to pay qualified education expenses, are not taxable. The law allows for an outright grant of up to $750 in a dollar-to-dollar match for contributing into a 529 plan with NJBEST. However, it is limited to household with gross income of $75,000 or less. Another benefit of the new law is a deduction of up to $10,000 for in-state tuition. Again, it would be limited to taxpayers with household income of $200,000 or less. The last piece of the legislation, also limited to taxpayers with household income of $200,000 or less, would allow a tax deduction of up to $2,500 for qualifying student loan payments towards New Jersey College Loans to Assist State Students or NJCLASS. NJCLASS loans are available to NJ residents and students.

N
o, the title of this article is not a mistake. It is a reference to House of Dezign, a school in Chatham where kids, teens and adults learn how to create their own fashions. House of Dezign was founded last July by Chatham resident Roya Ranjbar. While not a designer herself, she has extensive experience in the fashion industry, including a seven-year university program and stints at Chanel and Anne Fontaine. House of Dezign aims to, in Roya’s words, “build back skills that have been lost in many fashion schools today.” These lost skills include both hand and machine sewing, pattern-making and draping. At the same time, House of Dezign is also a cutting-edge school, using digital design programs and offering lessons in upcycling garments.

The school offers beginner, intermediate and advanced classes, as well as summer camps, “Sip & Sew” nights, and bachelorette and birthday party packages. Additionally, Roya has established a partnership with Montclair State University’s Department of Art & Design: Students in that department pursuing a BA in Fashion Studies can earn course credit working as House of Dezign interns. Students at House of Dezign learn to work with a variety of fabrics and other materials to create both garments and
accessories. Those who want to go into the industry are also taught how to create a portfolio and entire collection. Roya notes that only a few of her students plan to go into the fashion industry professionally; most simply love creating and discussing fashion. When they are not cutting, sewing or draping, House of Dezign students are learning about the history, cultural significance and economic value of the fashion industry. Adds Roya, “We also discuss fashion etiquette, such as why we wear fancy clothes to a wedding.”
Regardless of their future plans, students at House of Dezign find a calm, focused and nurturing environment. Ranjabar has cultivated a safe space for kids, teens and adults to express themselves. She says that unlike the cutthroat world of fashion depicted in Project Runway, “There is no competition here; everyone’s work is great.”

J
oseph Borzotta makes paintings that are both delightful in their whimsy, and never fail to provoke the viewer to questions. A kind of Renaissance Man, he was born and raised in NJ, and studied at both the Rhode Island School of Design as well as The School of Visual Arts in NYC. He’s owned bars in both New York City and Hoboken; operated a well-known gallery in Asbury Park called Palette ArtSpace; maintains a blog called The Gallery Guy; his film, Across The Bar, was accepted into the Garden State Film Festival; and he can often be found in comedy clubs in the tri-state area doing standup. Currently, an exhibit of his recent paintings are on display until February 20th at the Visual Art Center of New Jersey, in Summit. First Week Last Week 24

Get Off My Lawn
THE PAINTINGS OF JOSEPH BORZOTTA Combining collage, as well as both abstract and representational images, this series of 9x12 paintings were all completed during the quarantine phase of the current Covid crisis. In First Week Last Week, we see a businessman, painted over the ghost of his daily calendar, inexplicably sporting the ears of a rabbit. He stands on an abstract field. Maybe the artist/businessman is questioning the absurdity of trying to do business during the strange time we all experienced in the early days of Covid 19. Who knows? What we do know is that the painting makes us both smile, and wonder. Take Me To The River, referencing an old Talking Heads song, we again see a solitary figure with which Borzotta once again comments on the loneliness and separation so many of us experienced during quarantine as well a time of great political unrest wherein many of us felt clearly on one side or the other. Working with the combination of collage and acrylic paint, Who Is It, was the first of this series completed. The background may be a random abstract, or is it a landscape in which a lone figure, both painted and made with collage, wonders if there’s someone else there? Also in the exhibit is a larger painting: Get Off My Lawn, a 30x40 acrylic and collage, in which Borzotta reflects an urban life left as he moved, along with his wife and child to the suburbs of NJ. He’s included this work he believes is the precursor which led him to the rest of the body of this work. A background of mid-century developer houses under a stormy sky behind a solitary figure whose arms are outstretched pleading for something. It’s up to the viewer to decide what. You can see many more works on his website, and see a selection in person at the Visual Art Center of New Jersey.

aking that extra step when it comes to customer service is something building contractor Victor Zucchi & Son has been doing for 85 years. “My father and my grandfather believed in providing next-level customer service,” says Chris Zucchi, who represents the builder’s fourth generation. The contractor is currently working on a $2.5 to $3-plus million construction project in Englewood—adding an 11,000 sq. ft. addition to a 4,000 sq. ft home. “We take customer service very seriously,” Zucchi emphasizes. “During 2021 we saw significant material price increases and construction material delays.” Yet, to the delight of the client, the project has remained on schedule. “This is why pre-construction services— which include sourcing materials, pricing materials, and scheduling material delivery to coincide with the production schedule—take on new urgency as 2022 gets underway,” he adds.
Victor Zucchi & Son’s Englewood project also came with another big challenge: The client wanted the addition to match the original home. To do so, Victor Zucchi & Son went to a reclaimed brick company in Iowa to source and secure a particular type of 19th century brick—a clinker brick—for the home’s façade…and the match was made. Work is proceeding on the interior of the home for which the homeowner also wants a match between the new structure and the original, down to the moldings and woodwork. “The client wants the old to look new and the new to look old,” Zucchi states. “It is a challenge, but it is also fun for us.”

Still, for some kids, particularly those who are shy, introverted, or homebodies, the thought of going away for a night, let alone a week or more, can cause considerable anxiety. When kids are adamantly opposed, forcing summer camp on them may not be in their best interest. But for kids who are eager – or at least willing to give it a shot without much fuss – summer camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere. Summer camp provides kids the following benefits: • fosters independence • a place to develop new and lasting friendships • development of new skills • discovery of new interests and hobbies • the opportunity for creative expression • a break from being plugged-in daily exercise

Just choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. hen the clocks fall back and the days start to shorten, our hours in the sunlight become scarce. This can cause a lot of people to feel less energetic, moody and unhappy. For some, the seasonal change actually leads to a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD). One way to alleviate some of these symptoms is light therapy. Although light therapy is not a cure, it may increase your energy levels, regulate sleep and boost your mood. During light therapy, you sit near a light box for an extended period of time—most people choose to do it in the morning. In order for it to be effective, you should be relatively close to the light, and facing it with your eyes open. Aside from that, you’re free to do your makeup, read a book, surf the web or do whatever you’d like. The amount of time you should spend in front of the light varies depending on the amount of LUX the lamp produces, but is typically between 30 minutes and two hours. Light therapy is generally safe, but it’s always good to discuss with your doctor before you try a new treatment, especially if you have a history of skin cancer, or have a condition or are taking a medication that makes your skin more sensitive to light or your eyes vulnerable to light damage.

Everyday Self-Care Routines for a HEALTHY Heart D evoting a little time every day to care for yourself can go a long way toward protecting the health of your heart. Simple self-care, such as taking a moment to de-stress, giving yourself time to move more, preparing healthier meals, and not cheating on sleep can all benefit your heart.
It may be easier than you think to “put your heart” into your daily routine. Each Sunday, look at your week’s schedule and carve out 30 minutes daily for heart-healthy practices. Take an online yoga class, prepare a heart-healthy recipe, schedule your bedtime to get at least seven hours of sleep, or make a medication checklist. Then seek out support from others, even if it’s online or via a phone call, to help you stick to your goals. Here are few self-care tips to try every day to make your heart a priority:

Find a moment of serenity every Sunday. Spend some quality time on yourself.
Don’t waffle on your wellness. Move more, eat a fruit or vegetable you’ve never tried, make a plan to quit smoking or vaping, or learn the signs of a heart attack or stroke. You could be having a heart attack if you have chest and upper body pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, or lightheadedness. You might be having a stroke if you have numbness in the face, arm, or leg; confusion; trouble talking or seeing; dizziness; or a severe headache.
Follow inspiring people and pages on social media, or text a friend to help you stick to your self-care goals. Remember to take care of your mental health, too. Two of the main hurdles to self-care are depression and a lack of confidence, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
Mindful Monday
Be mindful about your health and regularly monitor your blood pressure or blood sugar if needed. Keep an eye on your weight to make sure it stays within or moves toward a healthy range. Being aware of your health status is a key to making positive change.
Tasty Tuesday Choose how you want to approach eating healthier. Start small by pepping up your meals with a fresh herb or spice as a salt substitute. Get adventurous and prepare a simple, new, heart-healthy recipe. 34

Treat Yourself Thursday Treats can be healthy. Try making a dessert with fresh fruit and yogurt. Then stretch your imagination beyond food. Host a family dance party, take a few minutes to sit still and meditate, go for a long walk, or watch a funny show. Laughter is healthy.

Selfie Saturday Inspire others to take care of their own hearts. Talk about your self-care routine with loved ones or share a selfie on your social media platforms. E
very once in a while I get in a rut. I think everyone does now and then. The key is, how fast can you climb out and get back on track?
Sometimes it might be lack of energy. Maybe not enough sleep or not eating right. Or it could be that the people around you are bringing you down. Whatever the case may be—it all begins with an attitude adjustment and a plan of “action” to get back on track. Even the smallest action can ignite a movement in a positive direction. I would like to introduce you to Bobby Collins, whom I have known for over 30 years and is one of the funniest comics alive. He is ‘Mr. Positive’—If anyone knows how to recharge your attitude, Bobby’s the one. Here are a few of his thoughts on the subject: God first, family second, career third. God first. If you put one ahead of the other you always have to get back on where you got off. I have a lot of faith and sometimes things don’t work out my way and I get bummed
out, but my faith carries me through. I remind myself to stay strong and stay true rather than get sad and insecure. Family second. I have to say how rejuvenating it is hanging out with my family. Just seeing my wife’s smile; and hanging out and laughing with my kids. It’s the simple things that help us get back our energy and a resilient attitude that we often take for granted. Career third. I’m a performer, a comic. I travel throughout every city in every state. When I get up on stage there are people of all different nationalities and many different cultures. In the audiences, there are some faces that I can tell are right in the moment with me… I am so happy and they’re so happy they came to the show to change how they feel—to laugh and enjoy themselves. Then there are the other faces that are hiding. I can look out into the audience and it appears they are hurting, sad or maybe they are angry or insecure. I believe they came to the comedy club specifically so that my performance will turn them. Know that it’s ok to feel that way. We all feel those things sometimes… It makes me realize that we all can change our attitude for the better by focusing on making others around you feel better. Never underestimate the power of lifting up others as it in turn will end up lifting your spirits as well.”
