Make-up guru LekshMi Menon joins royaL society of arts

The prestigious Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, commonly known as the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), has appointed Lekshmi Menon as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Lekshmi joins other leading artists such as actress Judi Dench FRSA, Musician Alex James FRSA, and composer Benson Taylor FRSA. Menon is the first Indian makeup artist to be nominated to RSA. Lekshmi Menon, who won a scholarship to study Master’s in International Business at Robert Gordon University in Scotland, followed her childhood passion for makeup and set about on a mission to work with women so as to develop their makeup skills and enable them to earn a sustainable livelihood. Also, as part of her #MakeOverChangesLife campaign, a movement where lives are transformed and inspiring stories are written, she has been working with women to give them makeovers as she believes that makeovers can give individuals a confidence boost and increase their self esteem. She is currently the creative head at Face Palette Pro Makeup Academy in Kochi, Kerala.

Singer-songwriter Camila Cabello is behind the new L’Oréal Paris limited edition make-up collection, available for a limited time only. Designed through a close collaboration between Camila and L’Oréal Paris, the 14-piece line includes natural-looking, universally-appealing shades and vibrant packaging, a tribute to the natural beauty of her beloved home city of Havana. “I am extremely proud and excited about the Havana collection,” says Cabello. “I wanted to create products that not only I would personally wear, but that would work well across various skin tones. For me, looking and feeling my best helps fuel my confidence and I hope to inspire other people to feel the same.” The collection includes the Havana Sun-Lit Bronzer, Gotta Give Brow, Flash Liner, Lip Dew and Eye Liner. It will be available only in the US.

gLobaL growth: skincare devices and organic personaL care ingredients Grand View Research, Inc, has released two separate reports on the expected growth of the skincare devices market and the organic personal care ingredients market. The first report says that the global skincare devices market size is expected to reach USD 12.8 billion by 2020, progressing at a CAGR of 10.0% during the period between 2012 and 2020. Increasing number of skin related disorders such as cancer and assorted disorders are likely to increase the adoption rate of these devices. Rising use of homecare products and growing medical spa treatments are some of the key trends stimulating market growth. Some of the key factors that are driving growth are technological advancements, growing appearance consciousness, and rising disposable income. Growing awareness regarding benefits of skin rejuvenation amongst patients, rising demand for aesthetics, and increasing incidence of skin disorders are among the primary growth stimulants. As per the second report, the global organic personal care ingredients market size is projected to reach USD 11.1 billion by 2025, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period. Increasing demand for organic and natural products for skincare and haircare is the key factor driving the market. Amit JAin is the new mAnAging Director At L’oréAL inDiA Amit Jain has been appointed as the India Managing Director of L’Oréal, effective August 01, 2018. He succeeds Jean-Christophe Letellier who after 5 years in the role will take on an important position within the L’Oréal group. Amit Jain will be L’Oréal India’s first Indian Managing Director. Amit will also look after Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. He will report to Pierre-Yves Arzel. “We believe that Amit’s rich global experience with a deep understanding of India, transformational leadership skills and inclusive personality will be an important asset in further developing L’Oréal’s business in India. His mission is to build on our rich talent base and global brands, to make L’Oréal India an engine for growth in Asia. We welcome Amit to the L’Oréal family and wish him all the best,” said Pierre-Yves Arzel, Vice President - South Asia Pacific Zone, L’Oréal. Amit holds a MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) and has done an Advanced Management Program from the Wharton Business School. Amit supports wildlife conservation and literacy for underprivileged children. His career spans over 30 years with renowned companies across countries such as ICI, Coca Cola, Viacom and Akzo Nobel. In his last role, Amit held the position of Managing Director, North-West Europe for Akzo Nobel, based in Amsterdam.

Global Wellness Day (GWD) was celebrated across the country on 9th June, 2018. In India, it was announced and executed by India’s ambassador for GWD - Rekha Chaudhari, Founder, JCKRC Spa Destination. First introduced in 2016 under her guidance, GWD in India is celebrated on a wide level with the support of various sectors. This year’s GWD launch was hosted at Iridium Spa, St. Regis Hotel and the theme was Kids’ Wellness. Critical issues like increasing rate of depression, obesity, crime against children and importance of physical activities for their well-rounded growth were addressed. For preschools, it is a five-minute wellness circle time each morning and at elementary schools it is one-hour wellness class per week. The project will focus on three key areas – self-love, breathing and mindfulness. GWD celebrations were undertaken at various wellness centres, spas, health and fitness centres and salons across the country. It was applauded by Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis.

Hairdressers from different parts of the country converged at the ASK Academy in Andheri weeks prior to the show to brainstorm and design the looks. All the prep work on the models were done there. The air at the Academy was charged with creativity and passion.

The Essential Looks show kickstarted with an introductory speech by Kartik Kaushik, General Manager, Henkel Beauty Care (Schwarzkopf Professional), India. He said, “We live in a visually sophisticated world driven by trends that are born on the catwalks of the world’s fashion capitals. Essential Looks is a trend setting property created by Schwarzkopf Professional, which showcases the hair styles and colouring techniques inspired by these fashion capitals of the world, and in the process transform the world of hair. The aim of today’s Essential Looks event was to bring these international styles to the Indian salons.” This was followed by the catwalk show with a set of models representing a different trend. A total number of five trends were showcased at


the event. Each set was choreographed to suit the theme of the trend, while the clothes worn by the models complemented the looks. As the models sashayed down the ramp, showing off each trend, Lesley was on her toes explaining each look to the audience. She spoke about the inspiration behind each trend, the idea behind each look and the driving force behind customising each trend for Indians. She explained, “I’m very excited to be in India to launch our Essential Looks REinvent hair collection in Mumbai. This collection of haircuts and colours gives every hairdresser all the information they need to then be able to inform their clients of the new trends from head to toe.” The audience comprised salon owners, hairdressers, media houses and bloggers. Rod Anker: the woke bae of hair Rohini Lall talks to Rod Anker about hair, colour, running a business, white privilege, heat, monsoon and cake! — By Rohini Lall

R

od Anker, of the eponymous Rod Anker Salons is a person you can have an engaging conversation with about almost anything under the sun. He believes in unwavering focus, effortless talent and always standing behind his staff. His ‘employee first’ policy is heartening in the ‘customer is always right’ market. But that isn’t where the differences between him and other salon owners end. He doesn’t suffer fools. He doesn’t take late comers kindly and he definitely hates clutter. He engages with the person in the chair and does not even acknowledge his surroundings while is working on hair. Specially since his salon is all about it. It isn’t jumbled with skin and nail and juice bars and God knows what that you can get in a lot of multi speciality salons. There are no messy wax strips, no hair on the floor, no TV, sales counter, cookie jar or any thing that can be classified as ‘bullshit.’ “The only thing I am allergic to is bullshit”, Rod told me on the phone while answering a question about allergies and he has a wide array of things that he’d put under the umberella of the term. Even the number of chairs in the salon point towards the fact that he would like nothing in excess around him. Eight chairs and a couch is just enough. No less, no more. There are no overburdened shelves on the walls. They are clean and so is his core ethic of not pushing products on clients unless they themselves ask for it. They are free to buy them from wherever they want to. Another striking element of the salon is the spotless cleanliness. Despite the graffiti on the wall, the rest of the salon is spotless and almost calm inducing. The music playing is soft and there’s no way you’ll come out of there with a blistering headache that some salons will leave you with because the decide not to play music, but to blare it. Among more commendable things, Rod is an advocate for Times of India’s Nahi Means No initiative that plans to educate people about toxic masculinity, gender roles, rape culture and more importantly about the weight and power of the word NO. The fact that he chooses to be an ally means a lot to me, a rape survivor.

Inocorp’s Cut & Color Seminar in Rajkot

Importer and distributor of renowned international brands in India, Inocorp Marketing Pvt Ltd organised an educational seminar in Rajkot. Hosted at Hotel Fortune Park JPS Grand, Rajkot, the seminar focused on creating awareness about the brand Alfaparf Milano.

T

he seminar started with a warm welcome to all the participants by Sanjay Macwan, Regional Business Manager at Inocorp Marketing Pvt Ltd. He then introduced the Chief Guest of the seminar Master Pankaj. Colours are trending nationally and are taking the hair industry by storm. The beginning of the seminar was marked with Jigar Amreliya, Area Technical Educator, practically showing colouration and Vyomesh Tank, Business Development Executive, explaining the theory of these colours. On the first model, global colouration with Pigment Golden Mahogany was selected. For the second model, Evolution of the Color Metallic Silver and Pigments Violet Ash was chosen to give the global colour lift. In this session,

colouration was by Jigar and hair cut was by Pankaj. For the second colour segment, the focus was on another range – Revolution Colours. Blue was the colour of choice for the third model. Since the model’s hair was normal, so before applying Revolution Color in Blue, her hair were first pre-lightened using Eq Supermeches High lift with Oxid’o 40 volume quantity developer. After this Revolution Color in Blue was applied globally. Her hair was then rinsed and blast dried. The fourth model was selected to portray Pigments Violet Ash. Before applying Evolution of the Color Metallic Rose, her hair was first pre-lightened using Eq Supermeches High lift with Oxid’o 40 Vo Developer. Later on this Pigment Violet Ash with Mask was

applied to cut the yellow tone. Then Evolution of the Color Metallic Rose with 20 Vol was applied and rinsed. The model’s colouration for this sessoion was by Neeraj Kumar, Area Technical Educator, and cut was by Pankaj. For the last segment, a model with normal hair was selected. The session began with a hair cut followed by colour and style. Her hair was also prelightened twice with Eq Supermeches High Lift with 40 Vol Developer. After washing her hair with Pigments Violet Ash with Mask , Revolution Magenta was applied. This was followed by a hair wash and a blast dry. The seminar concluded with a fashion show, revealing the latest looks and styles. Attendees also got a certificate of participation along with goodie bags. 07.18

Dr Jamuna Pai, Founder, SkinLab, believes that to maintain rejuvenated, glowing and healthy skin, it is essential that everybody takes utmost care of their skin during the monsoon season. Therefore, to combat all the skin woes, one must follow a simple yet effective skincare regime. Dr Pai provides a few beauty guidelines for a youthful and radiant skin this monsoon season: Intake of fluids: Drink at least 7-8 glasses of water to maintain hydration. Since the mercury isn’t soaring in this season, we tend to forget the importance of adequate and regular water intake. Shield your skin: Since it’s cloudy, it does not mean the skin is protected from the sun. It is extremely important to guard your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays, so always use a good sunscreen lotion. During the rainy season do not use oil-based products on your face as they tend to block the pores and can lead to acne; especially if your skin type is prone to oiliness. Keep away from water-based make-up as it can get smudged if you get caught in the rains unawares. Cleanse the skin: The skin should be cleaned minimum thrice a day, with a non-soapy face wash. This helps to clean excessive oil and dirt from the skin pores and helps it breathe. Rainwater left on the skin for long periods of time can act as an irritant making the skin itchy and easily prone to bacterial and fungal infections. Wash your face with a gentle face wash at least twice a day and anytime when you may have gotten caught in the rains. Facial: Facials, peels and other advanced beauty treatments like microdermabrasion are a fantastic way to freshen up a dull skin. Avoid toners with alcohol, as it can further dry your skin. Haircare: With the advent of rains, the added moisture in the atmosphere gives rise to oily scalp, frizzy hair and dry locks. Make it a routine to wash your hair at least thrice in a week. t is fitting that I quote the person I was honouring when I tell the story of getting inked for the second time and about the artist I chose to go to. Tenzin shares his name with his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and hails from Tibet. With that he brings an almost meditative charm which is comforting when there’s a needle going through you. This was my second time getting tattooed by him and despite the eight year time gap, he did actually remember me! His implements and tattoo parlour are obsessively clean, the pain is almost unnoticeable and his demeanour is conducive to getting inked because as you engage in a conversation, you don’t feel the anxiety or the pain which some people experience. Tenzin has been a tattooist since 2002 and has grown steadily in skill, respect and stature. If you want to get inked, call ahead, be on time and be prepared to wait a little.

Tell us about your grooming routine - hair and skin care? What challenges do you face? In terms of daily skincare, I like using a good all season moisturiser that can be my go-to option in every way. Describe your look in your upcoming movie Well, ‘Kalank’ is a period film so you will be seeing me in a different avatar. As for the rest, it’s too early to share details but I promise the wait will be worth it How did your association with Pond’s come along? It’s a brand that a lot of us have grown up with. Menstrual Hygiene Day Celebration As the world celebrates Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28th, Deepanjan Charitable Trust hosted an awareness evening on hygiene issues relating to female menstruation. Dr Deepali Bhardwaj’s book ‘Sail over all your Menstrual Worries’ was also unveiled at the event.

eepanjan Charitable Trust by Dr Deepali Bhardwaj celebrated International Menstrual Hygiene Day in collaboration with WASH United, Germany at India International Centre, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi. Hosted on May 28th, the event also witnessed the book launch ‘Sail over all your Menstrual Worries’, authored by leading dermatologist Dr Deepali Bhardwaj. The event also had the presence of eminent dignitaries, including Vijay Goel, Minister of State, Parliamentary Affairs and Manoj Tiwari, MP and President Delhi BJP. Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual day to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management. It was initiated by the Germany based NGO WASH United which aims to benefit women and girls worldwide. The 28th was selected to acknowledge that 28 days is average length of menstrual cycle. The event had a panel discussion with prominent speakers onboard, including Dr Mohini Daljit Singh, Dr Gagan Sahni, Dr Sukriti Chauhan and Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, to name a few. The panel highlighted numerous significant issues related to menstruation in our country and few steps, which could help in changing the current scenario. The ministry of health and family welfare has been implementing menstrual hygiene schemes for promotion of menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls in group of 10 - 19 years primarily in rural areas as a part of ‘Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram’. Commenting on the occasion, Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, Founder, Deepanjan Charitable Trust said, “Our humble effort is to spread this awareness and make the women and young girls influential to manage their challenge in the best possible way. They envisage distributing sanitary napkins in the slum areas in a regular manner. We have also printed print a booklet on menstrual hygiene and management of menstruation to be distributed freely and in large numbers to young girls and women in reproductive age group in the low income groups and in the slum areas.”

The products are inspired by natural remedies and come at affordable priced. We asked Cyril to share his experience of creating a beauty brand with us. What got you interested in beauty and wellness? It all started when I was in college and came to India for it. I was very much attached to India, its culture and wanted to know and be a part of it. Here people are more inclined towards a natural form of beauty and wellness industry. They will always find a remedy in the kitchen. With time and availability of wide range of chemical-infused expensive products, it’s affecting the mindset. So I thought a natural, organic and chemical free product would be the perfect way of showing the love that the country gave me. What was the key learning from your mobile spa business? I was struggling to source cosmetic products that met the expectations in terms of quality and price. I started to make my own

massage oils and the 100% natural face packs. I learned that there is a missing link in the Indian market. Indians are attached to their own remedies and suspicious of all the chemicals and synthetic ingredients a cosmetic contained. What are your plans for Kronokare? Do you have any targets in mind? The plans are currently to expand our retail presence. We are planning to open our flagship store, starting with Delhi and NCR. In terms of range, we are developing a men’s range especially designed for beard care. Which new products are in the offing? Each one of our products is animal cruelty-free and vegetarian. The Pollufight is a pioneer product from KronoKare, which forms a polysaccharide matrix (protective screen) over the face or hair and stops toxic pollutant particles from penetrating skin pores and causing damage. Apart from this, we have the Sun Warrior Sunscreen Lotion, Sun Shield Face Sunscreen, and Age Prevention Face Serum. Do you plan on opening a spa? With my five year experience in spa management, a spa is a project that we would definitely enjoy completing. Our product range is already of professional quality, considering the high percentage of active ingredient we use. We are yet to identify the right partner for such a project, as we would ideally want the spa to be located in a 5-star property.

he WorldSkills Competition, a flagship event of the World Skills International, organised every two years, is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry. As part of Skill India mission, WorldSkills India is an initiative of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India. NSDC, through its WorldSkills India initiative, has been leading the country’s participation at WorldSkills International competitions since 2011. The competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skill competitions in WorldSkills Member countries and regions. They are all under the age of 23 years. The primary objective of WorldSkills competitions is to give visibility and importance to professional education, as one of the true tools of socio-economic transformation. Beauty & Wellness Skill Sector Council (B&WSSC) sends candidates to the World Skill Competition in two categories – Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing. To select these candidates, the Council conducts regional and the national rounds. The candidates are judged by WEST the best in the industry and later trained by the Winner - Nikita Sarkar experts who prepare BEAUTy Runner up - Komal them for World Skill Kodlikar Competition. The candidates selected from the regional Winner - Charmi Sen rounds compete at national level. The best Runner up - Saurab HAiR at the national round will Kavde; yash Gondaliya be selected to represent India at the World Skill

Competition. It is scheduled next year in August in Kazan, Russia. After the successful completion of the cluster and state level completions of India Skill Competition conducted this year by the State Skill Development Mission, B&WSSC was given the mandate to conduct the four regional and the national level competitions. B&WSSC has till date successfully conducted four regional rounds - West Zone in Jaipur, North Zone in Lucknow and South Zone in Bangalore and East zone in Bhubaneswar, respectively. The state winners from this region with Track II and Track III winners’ participated in this competition. The Beauty Jury included esteemed members of the industry such as Harshada Takke of U-Takke Academy, Nalini Kalra from Christine Valmy, Tanshure of DGET, Bhakti Sapke of ISAS International School, Arpita Das of Repechage, Heron Awomi of Blossom Kochhar Academy, Disha Meher of UrbanClap, Bhawana Yash Roy & Anubha Dawar, Roopashree Nayak of Star Cosmetics, Sukirti Patnaik of Indulge The Salon, Richa Agarwal of Cleopatra Day Spa and Salon, The Hair Jury included Shirin Merchant of Kut & Make, Athrav Takke of U Takke Academy, Roopa Ambekar of Uber Medspa & Style Lounge.
