Asha encouraged the industry to look at more sustainable options in products and services as well that are on par with international standards. The thought-provoking and insightful Day 2 came to a close with a scintillating talk by hair maestro Jawed Habib. He spoke about surviving the biggest challenges in the salon business, how he developed new formats, and how he dealt with distractors. While many in the audience were thrilled at the opportunity to talk with him and take pictures, the SMC delegates were also fortunate to hear Jawed’s father, Habib Ahmed, speak about the Indian hairdressing industry.

looking aHeaD The eagerness with which salon owners and professionals attended SMC Delhi and wholeheartedly participated in it, we are confident that there is lot of scope for salon managment as an area of expertise to grow and prosper in India. Industry analysts have pegged the growth of the Professional Salon Care market in India at a CAGR of 27.07 per cent over the previous five year period. According to a KPMG report, the size of India’s beauty and wellness market is expected to touch Rs 80,370 crores by 2017-2018. This includes the beauty products and salon and spa businesses. Speaking at the occasion, Ritoo Jhha, Editor-in-Chief & Publisher, Beauté Espace Media said, “Indian salon business dwells in extremes – from the most modern salons with formidable structures and trained and semi-trained staff to

Meenakshi Dutt and Gurpreet Seble

the single beauty parlour run out of homes and corner shops; the little barber shops skilled in giving the quick, no frills cut and shave to the now growing formalisation of ‘salon at home’ services. In this clutter, there is a growing presence of schools and training centres. The government has recognised this sector as an industry less than four years back. Salon Management Conference is a seminal effort by Beauté Espace Media in collaboration with Professional Beauty to bring all stakeholders together to share knowledge and good practices.” Vikas Vij, Managing Director at Professional Beauty India, said, “Salon management is one of the most critical needs of the hour. And we are delighted that our launch of the Salon Management Congress at the Professional Beauty Delhi show in partnership with Beauté Espace has gone so well. We have had incredible support from some of the industry’s leading figures including Anand Mohan Jha, Nayana Karunaratne, Veer Kaul, Jawed Habib, Bharti Taneja and Abhiraj Bhal who really took a knife to some of the illnesses the industry is suffering from whether it be talent attrition, client acquisiton strategies, building a financially viable business model, product innovations and much more. The SMC is an important introduction to PBI and we are focused on growing it further bringing in more experts and case studies for those looking to develop their businesses”. SMC will be back with its third edition in Mumbai on October 01-02, 2018. For early bird offers and registrations, visit professionalbeauty.in. 06.18

L’Oréal Professionnel launches #OnlyInSalons L’Oréal Professionnel had held an event on 9th June 2018 to announce its new campaign - #OnlyInSalons. Brand ambassador Twinkle Khanna attended the event as an advocate of L’Oréal Professionnel’s ‘OnlyInSalons’ concept, which is agnostic to promoting any brand or product category. Given the ever-increasing popularity of DIY methods, it is best to leave hair colouration to an expert. A professionally trained and experienced hairdresser at a salon would understand your hair, diagnose you hair problems and choose colours based on your skin tone and employ relevant colouring technique. Twinkle spoke about her belief in the idea of #OnlyInSalons, and why she gets her hair coloured only by a professional. She was seen sporting a chic hair colour from the Parisian Chocolat collection. She answered a few questions from the media before concluding the session. 28  Beauty Launchpad India | 06 .18

Hair / Solutions

S

hould men’s hair grooming be limited to cuts? No! Should ‘men’s haircare’ be regarded as an oxymoron? No! If you agree with us, you are on the right page. Here we shall tell you how to get healthy, stress-free hair, even though you are a man! A gentleman’s hair is as much subject to external factors as a lady’s, if not more. A hectic life, work-related stress and environmental aggressors such as the sun and pollution, can make your hair dry, rough and lifeless. What you really need is a good dose of pampering! All you have got to do is book an appointment at the nearest L’Oréal Professionnel salon for a refreshing session of Hairspa.

Why choose hairspa? For starters, it’s the go-to option for women looking for in-salon haircare treatments. It is a massage-based therapeutic service that brings an ultra-relaxing experience while boosting the natural health and beauty of hair and scalp. It works just like a facial. Hairspa is the perfect rejuvenation to reduce stress and pamper yourself every month. Look around you at all the ladies flaunting luxurious tresses and dazzling smiles. Hairspa is your ticket to instant pamper-dom! It’s not a ladies-only thing, and men can try it, too, for a superrelaxed time.

From the Balinese technique comes the gentle stretches and long strokes that help release stress and boost the microcirculation on your scalp. The finger and thumb acupressure techniques are drawn from the Shiatsu tradition. They help to soothe you and release the qi energy of the body through your scalp. If you try the Oriental Hairspa every month, you will win the never-ending war with stress, pollution and dandruff.

Bespoke treatmeNts While we use generic terms like pollution, stress and lifestyle issues to describe the hair-related problems in men, we know that each person faces a particular problem due to a specific reason. That’s why L’Oréal Professionnel has designed a range of products that can cater to different hair and scalp needs. These products take care of the nourishment, smoothing, vitalizing and repairing requirements. In order to know which products are best-suited for your needs, you are required to undertake an in-salon expert consultation. The service and products will be recommened for you, depending on your hair and scalp type, thereby ensuring perfect results. So, each time you visit the salon for a L’Oréal Professionnel Hairspa, you will get a personalised pampering session lined up for you.

that account. But what I do, and this is interesting, is that I change it for India. Having been here three times, I have realised that long hair is one of the most important elements of the salon business. I try to make my show as informative as possible. A run between a beautiful casual and a glamorous updo is something that I emphasise on, as this is what the customer wants. Women today attend a variety of functions such as different kinds of weddings, parties and other dos. Social media also plays a huge part in influencing women. Many young girls out there want to look like Kim Kardashian, they want the Meghan Markle look, they want the things that they see out there. So, I make sure that the shows are representative of different areas that women might enjoy.

ExcERPTS FRoM ThE ExclUSIVE InTERVIEW WITh PaTRIck caMERon FoR BEaUTY laUnchPaD... Tell me about all the things you have been doing since you landed. Since I landed it has been go-go-go! We started with Delhi, had a big show there – around 350 people. From there we went to Chennai and similarly had a big show there. And then it was Mumbai with about 450 people. The production was beautiful. We had well-known stylist Mahima style the whole show for us and it was magnificent. It was a great show and very well received. And I am both happy and proud! how do you usually prepare yourself for such shows? I didn’t! I don’t need to prepare myself for anything in India. India is just a gorgeous, wonderful big melting pot of loveliness! When I go to another country for shows, obviously, I have to get appropriate clothes and equipment. But that’s all the preparation that I do. I don’t mentally prepare myself for anything. I have been doing this for 27 years. If you tell me right now, ‘Patrick, there are 300 people out there right now that you have to speak to,’ I can go out there now and do it. What I prepare myself is more for the physicality such as my wardrobe choices, rather than any mental preparation. What about the preps that you do on the styling front? I am always working on my latest collection. So, I don’t really have to prepare myself on

About Easy Classics Collection

Patrick cameron will launch his new collection ‘Easyclassics’ at Salon International. The collection reintroduces long hairdressing back to the salon as an important and profitable service. There are 13 looks in the collection – seven timeless classic hairstyles inspired by iconic looks and six brand new techniques created especially for every day use in the salon. ‘Easy classics’ is the perfect tool for any salon-based hairdresser.

Was the focus of your show on bridal styling? We did focus on that as bridal styling is the biggest area that hairdressers work on in long hairdressing. But as you know, long hair now is so individual that women can go for a red carpet look, or an evening out look or a bridal look. What are the top trends for bridal styling? There is a general trend of soft sexy hair. Hair that looks effortless. Hairdressers often overdo hair, whereas a lot of the younger clients today want softness in their look. My advice to hairdressers is to try and relax more, try not to overthink it. Look at what’s going on, there are great tutorials available

online, look at fashion trends, and they are welcome to look at my website. I have over 150 hairstyles available with tutorials. What are the trends for long hair in the West? Casual, messy and textured – we see low messy buns at the back of the head. The softness in hair is also diffused with colour. We are getting dynamic colours – be it pastels or tone-on-tone. These trends are playing an important part as well. as a stylist, how much is colour important for you? I think colour always shows the style off to its best. When the hair is shiny and healthy, with beautiful lights through hair, anything that you do with it brings it to life. Hair colour is such an important part of our salon services in the UK with clients wanting not just cut but colour and other services as well. In India, stylists often ask clients with long hair to go short as way of a makeover. Is it the opposite in the West, do you ask your clients to grow out their hair? No, not really! People in the West are more open to change. Traditionally in India, women are encouraged to have long hair. There is a lot of pressure to conform. But there are so many styles that women can opt for in long hairdressing. Your hair for instance has colour tones underneath and soft layering, but it doesn’t take away from the long hair. What I would like to advice women with long hair is to re-evaluate the front. Perhaps, try putting in a fringe there. So, you don’t have to go from A to Z to get a

44  Beauty Launchpad India | 06 .18

makeover, you can go to a B or a C or a D. It doesn’t have to be drastic. You have to remember that any change on someone can be a big change. Change is in the eye of the beholder. What should a hairdresser keep in mind when a long hair client comes in? Always look at the way she wears her hair and how she likes to carry her face shape. Just be very sympathetic. Don’t be aggressive. Get the customer on your side. And once you do that, you will realise long haired people are very loyal. Once they feel that you are the hairdresser they can trust, a new world will open up for you – you will be able to trim, colour and style their hair and have a healthy relationship with them. Indian hairdressers also have to contend with thick and textured Indian hair. What tips do you have for them? This time I sat down and had a good talk with the Wella team and the sales people, and I asked them what the Indian hair customer is like when it comes to styling products. They said it is still a very big growth area. Lot of people still feel uncomfortable about styling. There are a few misconceptions here – products could damage my hair, destroy it, so I will just put a coat of thick oil through it and that’s it. I’m sorry but that’s rubbish! Products are not designed to destroy the hair but to enhance it. They are designed to give you best results. It’s important that you rethink the way you are using styling products and opt for things that complement your hair.

Cheryl’s Flagship Skincare Institute

T

alking about her favorite Cheryl’s treatment, Sunita Pawar, Founder & Director of LookWell Salons recommends the perfect solution for radiant skin. She says, “I have been associated with Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals for over a decade. I strongly believe in diagnosis-based skincare recommendation and delivering results basis the client’s concerns. My skin experts are trained with Cheryl’s over the years and deliver transformative skin care.” In terms of her experience with the brand, Sunita says, “One of my trusted treatments to achieve radiant skin is the O2C2 Radiance treatment by Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals. The treatment is popular amongst brides and for clients who come to prep their skin for special occasions. They always share a positive feedback post this treatment, as it helps in reducing dullness and reveals natural radiance in just one sitting, which lasts for minimum 20 days. We also strongly recommend this treatment to our clients with wheatish or uneven skin tone. Basis the typology study, majority of the Indians are born with a complexion that varies from fair to wheatish. Environmental factors like dust and pollution of our country, can further impact our skin tone making it dull. Hence, this treatment is best suitable and specially engineered for Indian skin tone.”

This treatment is powered with the breakthrough Oxy-Nzyme Technology which provides an instant glow and long-lasting radiance. The infused oxygen moisturizes the skin, reduces appearance of wrinkles and gives clients the desired youthful glow. It also contains fruit enzymes like papapin and bromelain, that help in exfoliating the epidermal dead skin, gently removes upper and older layers of skin and reveals new skin layers that give a radiant look. Cheryl’s O2C2 professional treatment is a 6-step treatment that is suitable for all skin types, except acne prone skin. Talking about the process, she says, “We start with cleansing followed by toning and a relaxing massage. To remove dead skin cells, we apply O2C2 Peel Activator and Peeling Cream to lighten skin and reduce wrinkles. The process ends with a sunblock that provides complete UV protection so our clients can step out in the sun stress free.” Recommended is an after care at home with O2C2 Radiance Lotion to maintain the results of the professional treatment. Infused with ingredients like Sodium Cocoyl Alaninate, Actinidia Polygama Fruit Extract and Evodia Rutaecarpa Fruit Extract, the lotion helps in regulating the production of melanin that causes skin darkness and evens out the skin tone.

Sunita Pawar, Founder & Director of LookWell Salons is a well-reputed name in the salon industry. The beauty expert who believes in transforming skincare has been a Cheryl’s Cosmeceuticals loyalist for almost 20 years. She has also collaborated with the brand to launch the Cheryl’s flagship Skincare Institute in 2017. Tried and TesTed lYn mani-Pedi aT Juice salon The Nail Bar at Juice Salon in Khar, Mumbai, is my favourite go-to place on a sunny afternoon. Why, you ask? Well, firstly it has an extensive range of treatments that help you rejuvenate and unwind. And secondly, the staff there is warm and courteous, making you feel relaxed instantly. It’s a great place to disconnect from the city’s hubbub as it is in the Juice Salon’s basement. As I entered Nail Bar for my mani-pedi appointment, the manager greeted me warmly and conducted a quick consultation round. I was introduced to my pedicurist who immediately got down to work. I opted for the new LYN Mint Mani-Pedi (highly recommended by the manager!). The pedicure was a real treat for my tired feet. It comprised a deep tissue massage, exfoliation and the mandatory cuticle and nail maintenence. It ended with a foot mask. The products were easy on the skin and the minty aroma was soothing. A similar process was followed for my hands as the manicurist began the treatment. Pressing of pressure points on the palms, fingers and wrists proved to be a revitalising experience. Once the treatments were done, the technicians started with the gel nail application. It was not at all time-consuming as I had earlier suspected. With technical perfection and finishing, my hands and feet underwent a glamorous transformation. The gel nails lasted for over two weeks without chipping or losing their shine. As I thanked the staff at Nail Bar, Juice Salon, and stepped out, I knew I was ready to face the impending rainy season with impeccable style. 54  Beauty Launchpad India | 06 .18
