AngelinA Jolie At guerlAin store Guerlain welcomed its muse Angelina Jolie at its store in Paris to kickstart the celebration of the brand’s 190th anniversary. Laurent Boillot, President and CEO, Guerlain, gave Angelina a tour of the historic boutique located at 68 Avenue des Champs-Elysees. Angelina is the face of Guerlain’s latest perfume – Mon Guerlain. She participated in one of the brand’s bespoke perfume ateliers with Guerlain’s master perfumer Thierry Wasser.

elizAbeth Arden, reese Witherspoon teAm up Elizabeth Arden announced the launch of the March On campaign, featuring a limited edition lipstick, in the brand’s signature Red Door Red shade and signed by Reese Witherspoon, which will be sold globally with 100% of the proceeds donated to UN Women. An early advocate of women’s rights, Elizabeth Arden famously provided red lipsticks to the suffragettes marching on Fifth Avenue in 1912. WellA to reinvent itvA Coty’s Wella Professionals has announced that this year’s International TrendVision Award (ITVA) competition finals will take place in Lisbon, in the first week of November, 2018. The 16th edition of ITVA will feature a new, redesigned format aiming to take the creative excellence of competitors to the next level and leveraging digital technology and social media channels to connect an even greater number of hairdressing fans around the world. The first part of the reinvention will be to raise the global finals to a new level of creative hands-on experiences and mentorship. Instead of a 3-hour model preparation time from previous years, the competitors will have a chance to experience a 2-day Creative Retreat with some of the top names in the industry. During this time they will be challenged and supported to go beyond their comfort zone in various areas of hairdressing skills, craft and creativity. The whole programme and the finals in Lisbon will be accompanied by an expanded digital engagement plan, which will give the audience around the world a chance to have a closer look at the finalists’ work, go behind the scenes and vote for their favourites.

AWArd for l’oréAl L’Oréal and Hong Chi Association have been honoured with the Certificate of Merit for the Outstanding Partnership Project Award 2017/18 by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) for their Beauty for a Better Life (BFBL) programme. The award was presented to the organisations at a ceremony held during the Caring Company Partnership Expo 2018. L’Oréal was the only beauty company to receive the award in recognition of its long-term commitment to serving the community by promoting diversity and social inclusion. The Beauty for a Better Life (BFBL) programme, launched in partnership with Hong Chi Association in 2009, has resulted in the first-ever accredited hair care training course for the intellectually-challenged in Hong Kong.

be interested in strong personalities. It’s like an ode to difference and tolerance. I love the way he presents his fashion collections, turning them into veritable shows, à la Gaultier. He is full of fun, laughter, it’s loud and alive, sometimes it’s over the top. But for me, that’s what life is about, love and joy. How does the Parisienne inspire this fragrance? She is indeed a Parisian woman, multi-faceted, atypical elegant, sexy, carrying her fantasies and excesses with style. She is free, without taboo, without restrictions, always about to surprise us. Why honey? What is the connection with JPG / and the concept? JPG is an epicurean, a bon vivant as we say in French. In his interviews, when questioned about his olfactory memories, he talks a lot about food. As a teenager, the first time he smoked a cigarette, he coughed so much that he said to himself: “This isn’t for me, neither cigarettes, nor the so-called virility that goes with them. Both stink! I’d much rather a nice cake, a creamy religeuse for example!” The reason I thought of honey for this fragrance, is that it’s an ambiguous ingredient. It’s sugar, so I’ve consciously chosen a kind of gourmandise. In addition I worked from a honey from Jujubier, a fine product from the Yemen, which has particularly pronounced facets of caramel milkiness. But honey also has an animal note. On the olfactory level, we are borderline disturbing, intimate... But in any event, it’s fun! What does honey-Chypre mean? We can speak about Chypre because this fragrance is based on a patchouli structure. It was important to associate this excess of gluttony with a vertical architecture, chic, sexy and a little racy. I used “patchoulol”, an extract taken from a purification of patchouli, here the notes are more precise, sharper, more modern. In an interview about his memories of Paris, M.Gaultier mentions a beautiful redhead, a model he met on a show who smelled of patchouli. He said, “What a shock. An unfamiliar perfume that opened the doors to a forbidden world. The perfume of a forbidden fruit, exciting. Every fragrance is linked to sexuality, far more than a clothes.“ At the end of the day, this honey-Chypre marries eroticism and sophistication.


Packaging A glass bottle, très chic. The juice is pink, feminine, intimate, powdery. But most of all, for 20 years Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes have been (and have had) only busts. For those who wondered where the legs had gone, here they are! A pair of legs pointing skyward, on the cap, announces the scandal. Because yes, and too bad for those that are easily shocked, one can lose one’s head - while keeping it squarely on ones shoulders.

Fragrance In the daytime, it’s honey, fresh and appetizing that clearly smells of Gardenia and Blood Orange. At night, it is a sensual and seductive honey mixed with patchouli.

A tranquil retreat

I

have been to Alibaug plenty of times, what with it being an easy-to-reach weekend destination from Mumbai. During my visits, I have tried my hand at water sports, lounged on the beach and savoured authentic coastal cuisine but never have I tried a spa treatment. That is until I visited Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Alibaug! Alibaug is a picturesque location. Even if you are not in the vicinity of the sea, you are still drenched in the greenery and pristine environment of the place. Taking into consideration the picture perfect beauty of Alibaug, the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa in tandem with the nature surrounding it. The hotel is designed as a spa destination with interiors that immediately put you at ease. There are a number of water bodies within the property, and a huge Buddha sculpture that completes the Zen experience of the place.

My day started early as I had to take a ferry from Gateway of India to Alibaug. The journey took exactly an hour. A car was waiting for me at the jetty and we immediately set forth on another hour-long drive towards the hotel. The lush greenery of Alibaug and the pleasant weather set the tone for things to come.

Luxurious induLgence Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Alibaug is quite popular as a destination wedding hotel. Even as I was entering the lobby, I saw a big wedding party checking out of the hotel. The staff was warm and helpful. They offered me a suite to freshen up before I could start my treatment. The suite was appropriately designed and had a serene view of the inner grounds. The resort features seven different accommodation categories to choose from such as rooms, suites, duplex villas, spa villas and top suites.

My spa session was supposed to be a pre-lunch one. So, I headed for the spa, right after changing. The spa is located within the inner grounds at a distance from the guest rooms. This allows it to remain secluded from the humdrum of the daily activities. The 20,000-square-foot spa operated by Escenza is one of the unique aspects of the hotel. It has seven treatment rooms, including a couple room. The carefully designed menu covers a gamut of therapies from full body massages to mani-pedis, scrubs, wraps and baths. The spa is designed around the theme of tranquility and the decor itself helps to soothe your senses. I met with the spa manager, Gautam, who explained to me the various spa treatments on offer. Wishing I could try the Escenza Touch, their signature treatment, I finally opted for the Aroma Candle Experience.


The reason I didn’t go for the former was the inclusion of deep tissue massage, which doesn’t suit me at all. So, the Aroma Candle Experience it was! The therapist ushered me into the couple treatment room. Warm and cosy, the room was spacious with en-suite sauna, shower and Jacuzzi. The treatment started with the therapist melting the massage candle to get a warm sumptuous massage oil. She then poured the oil on her palms and started rubbing it onto my skin. The goodness of these natural butters seeped into my skin as the swift massage strokes released tension from my muscles. The therapist also used dry rubbing and stretching wherever required. She was quickly able to gauge the problem areas in my body, namely my shoulder and back, and worked her massaging magic on them. The hour-long therapy was accompanied by soothing music in the background. She kept the conversation to a minimum, allowing me to enjoy peacefully the therapeutic effects of the oils and the massage. I refrained from getting an oil massage on my head, so the therapist gave me a dry one instead. It helped ease a month-long stress! The duration of the treatment was perhaps the most relaxing 60 minutes of my life in recent months. But relaxation is not enough, is it? You need to rejuvenate youself, too. Ergo, I opted for a lavendar enriched soak in the Jacuzzi. The 30-minute bath uplifted my spirit and readied me for another stint of urban life. The spa allows the patrons to add a body scrub, wrap or bath to their body treatments at an extra charge. As I stepped out of the room, I felt refreshed not just in my body but also in my mind. Noticing a line-up of interesting essential oils at the retail stand, I bought a couple of them, hoping to extend my experience of the spa at home. Gautam informed me that the majority of footfall at the spa is of hotel guests, and since it’s a reputed wedding destination, the spa plays host to lot of pre-wedding bridal activities. Moreover, the spa also has special offers for the guests who stay with the hotel as part of a conference, with packages that are cost- and time- effective. You can quickly rejuvenate yourself and get back to your meeting! After the spa treatment, I made good use of the spa interiors by taking some memorable picutres. A scrumptious lunch of salad and chicken at the Apranta restaurant was all that I needed to complete my perfect day.

There were a couple of hiccups in my experience. The hotel and spa staff were not properly briefed about my arrival, so initially I wasn’t certain how to go about the place. And I was rather short of time so I didn’t get to see the entire property at leisure. That however, I am sure I can rectify by planning another trip to the

Women’s Day Dr Deepali Bhardwaj hosted a women’s day activity at her clinic in New Delhi.

r Deepali Bhardwaj’s Centre of Skin & Hair celebrated International Women’s Day with an event at their Defence Colony Branch in Delhi. Held on March 9, the occasion was graced by the city’s eminent personalities, including Pratibha Prahlad, Alka Raghuvanshi, Miss K P Vijayalakshmi, Parull Mahajan and Rashi Anand, to name a few. The theme for International Women’s Day was ‘Time is Now; Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women’s Lives.” In an introductory speech, Dr. Deepali shared that a lot of efforts and progress have been registered towards achieving gender equality, empowering women and elevating them politically, economically, socially and culturally. Further, she reiterated that it is time for action to end violence against women. Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj is a trustee in Deepanjan Charitable Trust through which she empowers girl child who are school dropouts like Ms. Rinki who dropped out of school in 2014 while she was studying

in 9th std and her parents who are daily wagers could not afford her to go to school and made her work with them. But now she got registered with NIOS for 10th std and will be giving her exams this October 2018 with the help of Dr.Deepali. Similarly a girl named Gungun who was found in night shelter by Lakshyam NGO founder Rashi Anand who was motivated by them and Dr. Deepali assured that all payment for a year is being borne by the Trust for her too. Pratibha Prahlad highlighted the efforts and schemes by the government to empower women and motivated all present on empowering others by sharing some heart wrecking examples and real life stories of women she had met. KP Vijay Laxmi also shared a few inspiring lines and asked everyone to join to transform the momentum into action to empower women in all settings, rural and urban and to celebrate the activists like Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj who are working relentlessly for women empowerment and their rights. Further, she said she would salute the indomitable spirit, determination and

dedication of this Nari Shakti on this auspicious Day. Present on the occasion was Delhi Cantt Counsellor Priyanka Chaudhary who gave examples on rural development of women and certain interesting anecdotes to make the women present encouraged to keep empowering other women. The event concluded with a vote of thanks given by Dr. Anjan Prakash, former Addl. Medical Superintendent of RML. She thanked all the participants and appreciated to take out time from their busy schedule for a common cause.

Branding in the lifestyle segment

Tarun Sharma, Founder, MCaffeine, in an exclusive tete-a-tete with Beauty Launchpad about the genesis of the brand and its path ahead. — By Kanishka Ramchandani

What made you get into the skincare space? Earlier I and Vikas were working on Box 8, a food tech company. I was handling the operations and multi-city expansion. Vikas was heading ZoomCars, the self-drive car rental company. We both are from the startup domain. We also had a chain of salons; we were aggregating the existing chain of salons. We were like ‘OYO’ for salons taking the existing inventory, rebranding it, scaling it up and taking a revenue cut. We had 12 salons under the brand name of Pep Salons. That’s how we were exposed to the product market. So we launched an in-salon product line under the Pep brand. We got to know the manufacturing and formulation part of the business. In 2015, when we were contemplating ‘what’s next,’ we realised that India as a consumer market has changed drastically in the last five years. We thought it was the right time to build something. 54  Beauty Launchpad India | 03.18

Consumer preferences had changed, nobody was buying products by only looking at TV ads. Everyone wants to explore their individualised taste in products and content. To launch an FMCG product, we had a three-layer test: 1. The product has to work 2. It should fit into a segment. You cannot build a brand for 130 crore people. 3. It should have a strong pscyhological connect. In March 2016, I had a sore eye, and someone suggested that I put green tea bags dipped in lukewarm water over my eyes. I tried it and to my surprise, the swelling subsided and I could open my eye. So, I did some research and found out that the caffeine in the green tea sucks out excess water and reduces puffiness. We extended our research to look at the effects of caffeine

on hair and skin. Caffeine is a super food for hair and skin. It has a UV filter, it works on cellulite, it delays the hairfall process, etc. Globally there are a lot of brands using caffeine/coffee, but in India nobody was doing it. The psychological connect was always there as coffee is a part of the lifestyle today. We hang out at Starbucks, there’s a Red Bull junta out there. We thought it to be the right time to invest in the caffeine culture. Moreover, ‘unisex’ or ‘lifestyle’ as a segment is huge in India, which led us to call our brand ‘MCaffeine’ I am Caffeine. After 7-8 months of formulations, we launched the brand in 2016. Where are the products manufactured? Currently we have three facilities, one each in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Our manufacturing is outsourced but we own the formulations. We follow a rigorous quality check process. We are on online-only brand, we sell through Amazon, Flipkart, Nykaa, Purplle, Paytm, etch.


Tell us about your product line. We launched with 6, now we have 16 types of products. We don’t have multiple sizing as yet. We are skincare heavy but we are working on a lot of haircare products. The Neem Caffeine facewash is one of our bestsellers. We have some niche products such as the silver gel, which the anti-microbial properties of silver. The idea is to club a key ingredient with our star ingredient caffeine. We have 10-12 active ingredients in our products. Hence, we are in the premium category. We have recently launched two choco masks. What’s your strategy for consumer engagement? The consumers is an important stakeholder in our company. We stay in constant touch with them. Every product has my personal number on it, so the customer can call me directly. It’s the customer who will tell you what they want and what you should make. We also work closely with our retailers to enhance the customer experience. Customer queries are responded to within 24 hours. We are not a discountheavy brand as we want to maintain our position as a premium brand. Do you have plans of going offline? We are in talks with multi-brand retail chains. People have approahced us because of the kind of difference that MCaffeine brings on the table. We are the first brand to call ourselves a caffeinated personal care brand. We are very different and that’s why retailers are excited to keep us on the shelf. We are looking at the best possible opportunity for our offline launch. Offline is a completely different ball game. Our business will be spaced across three verticals – domestic e-commerce, cross-border e-commerce

and offline. We envision MCaffeine as a global brand in the future. We are doing fine with SEO rating, thereby getting lot of traction from across the border customers. Offline is definitely on the cards but as of now we can’t say how and when it will come as we are still looking at our options. We are not rushing with it. We are happy with the way things are moving in the online sphere – we have sold our products to more than one lakh customers. Any plans of getting into men’s grooming? Men’s grooming is a huge segment right now and it will continue to grow. We haven’t entered it yet. We are first looking at the unisex customer. Our TG comprises the experiential male and the confident female. We are not thinking of bifurcating our product line into male-and female-exclusive but we might look at the men’s grooming segment in a year’s time. Can you explain your logo to me? The concept of having a living thing as your logo or identity is called anthropomorphism. I really like the monkey on the Bira beer brand. It looks naughty but not a drunkard. We were quite sure that we wanted a mascot. A wolf has a certain pattern of walking, follows an organizational format and hierarchy. Wolves are informed and calculating animals. We correlated these attributes with our customers who are well-informed. Secondly there’s the moon. It signifies night life and gels well with the wolf’s silhouette. So, in our logo we have the moon denoting an active night life and a wolf that’s in a communicating mode.

B&WSSC’s newly launched job portal www.bwsscajeevika.com aims to build better employment opportunities for the skilled workforce in beauty and wellness domain.

B&WSSC (Beauty & Wellness Skill Sector Council) has been organising exclusive job fairs for the beauty & wellness professionals across the country, as the Indian beauty and wellness industry is growing at a CAGR of 18.6%. According to KPMG Skill gap report, there is an additional 14.27 million manpower required in the beauty and wellness industry by 2022. According to another report, beauty and wellness industry will be the largest job puller by 2022 even surpassing agriculture. To bridge this gap between demand and supply, B&WSSC organized its first job fair in October 2017 at Delhi. More than 2000 candidates from the beauty and wellness domain participated, and many of them got placed at renowned organization from beauty & wellness industry. Looking at the overwhelming success at Delhi Job Fair, subsequent job fairs were also held in Guwahati, Mumbai, Jharkhand, Chandigarh and Bangalore. Major International and National Players in beauty & wellness industry participated in the job fairs. To facilitate job opportunities across the sectors, employers from Hospitality and Media industry were also invited to promote and encourage industry mobility and showcase the career opportunities available for the candidates in the allied sector. B&WSSC also invited Financial Institutions to offer financial assistance to the candidates at a customized rate of interest. The aim was to empower the youth and facilitate placements for skilled candidates. Vandana Luthra, B&WSSC’s Chairperson, quoted, “It is our earnest endeavour to ensure skilling of young and deserving talent of the country; and hence the job fair is just the perfect culmination to all our efforts. I am so happy to see the industry rally together to provide ample employment opportunities to the youth. Grooming and personal hygiene is also an important aspect while hiring the candidate in the domain, so B&WSSC makes special efforts by organizing workshops and orientation programme a day prior to the job fair making the candidate interview ready. The orientation programme includes personal grooming, mock interviews and other aspects which enables them to face the interviewers with confidence. The next job fair will be held on May 28 in Lucknow.
