The event highlighted key challenges that the Indian salon industry is facing such as staff poaching, GST, etc. The key members of the association - Kusum Goel of Meghna Beauty Parlour, Nirmal Randhawa of Indica Salon Prem Israni of Geetajanli Salons, Sanjay Dutta of LOOKS Salon and others - were present at the event hosted by actor Manish Goel. Arpit Jain of Maison D’ Auraine - the key sponsor of the event - spoke about their latest initiative ‘Project Green Salons’ that focus on promoting sustainability in the industry. The slogan “I support SOWA” was brought in as a mark of identity for salons who will henceforth work coherently with the Association to fight urgent issues plaguing the business- including the menace of Salon at Home services using apps, as per some senior members.
salon managEmEnt ZEnoti softwarE raisEs $20 million In its series C round of funding, Zenoti Software Company that offers salon management solutions has raised $20 million from Steadview Capital. An official statement from the Seattle and Hyderabad-based company says that the funding will be used to accelerate the pace of innovation as well as expand its current and upcoming geographies. Founded in 2010 by Sudheer Koneru, Dheeraj Koneru, Anand Arvind and Saritha Katikaneni, Zenoti offers cloud-based back-end services such as appointment booking, payroll, inventory and financial management for salons and spas. They also offer products for billing, marketing, CRM, and loyalty features. Lakmé, Kaya Skin Clinic, Bodycraft and Bouncer are some of Zenoti’s top clients in India. In the US, they cater to Waxing the City, Massage Heights, Mario Tricoci, Prose Boutiques, Sono Bello and Rudy’s Barbershop. In a previous round of funding earlier this year, Zenoti raised an investment of $50 million led by Tiger Global, along with its existing investors Norwest Venture Partners and Accel Partners. With a Series B funding of $15 million in 2016, the company has raised a total of $91 million so far.

Godrej Professional Godrej Professional unveils colour play trends 2019 in the presence of 100 salon stylists, in the capital city.

odrej Professional recently hosted a trend collection workshop in New Delhi, with Heena Dalvi – National Technical Head, Godrej Professional and renowned celebrity stylist Asha Hariharan, who is also one of the education ambassadors of the brand. The workshop focused on introducing local stylists to the three looks – Peek-A-Boo Ruby, Tiger Eye Bronze, Balayage Gold Ash – which were created as a part of Godrej Professional Colour Play Trends 2019. Over 100 stylists spent the day with the brand’s education and technical ambassadors. The workshop commenced with an informative talk on trending haircuts and the three new hair colouring techniques. Heena and Asha demonstrated the colour and cut live on stage – revealing tips and tricks for stylists to recreate these looks in their salons. What are the major milestones in your professional journey so far? My exposure to the best of beauty professionals and training from acclaimed beauty schools around the world has given me a broad overview of how the industry functions globally. I was fortunate to begin my journey under the able guidance of legendary Shahnaz Husain, followed by educational institutions such as Mellennia Institute of Aesthetics and Permanent Makeup & Beauty School Canada, Pamela Taylor Makeup Academy - USA, and Elim Nail Tech Academy New York, USA. In my career spanning 20 years, I have learnt a lot from my association with some of the industry wizards — understanding the nuances of beauty and haircare through them has enabled me to introduce specialised treatments in my salons. My interest in spreading beauty care knowledge and skills led me to the next milestone of opening the academy. This
was an exhilarating experience as I got utmost pleasure in teaching my students and deriving satisfaction from seeing them all grow as professionals/entrepreneurs in the industry — in India and abroad. The recognition for my brand and its services came through my association with fashion shows and beauty contests. I have been fortunate to work with several Bollywood stars as well. However, the journey continues with an aim to provide our clients with quality services that match international standards. I am proud of my team and their continuous perseverance in giving me their wholehearted support in achieving these goals.

In addition, I wish to educate and guide my clients on the importance of choosing trained professionals, correct and safe procedures, and a hygienic salon environment for their beauty treatments.
How do you train your staff to deliver skincare? I am a firm believer of always keeping the basics right and this includes maintaining very high standards of hygiene at my centres and encouraging the same to be practised by my staff while dealing with clients. Lighting: Keeping with the simplistic design approach, the lighting of the salon is chosen to blend with the rest of the elements. The salon area is kept bright, while the rooms have a mix of bright and comfortable lighting to address various needs of the services. One important aspect taken into consideration while selecting the lighting is the cost of maintenance and local serviceability of the fixtures, due to the salon’s location in a Tier-III city.
uSP: This is the biggest salon in Berhampur that offers a unisex section as well as a women-only section for clients seeking privacy. They have also introduced several premium services that are available only at Indulge The Salons.
Furniture: The salon furniture has been carefully sourced from Beauty Palace, the brand’s furniture partner, based on utility, comfort and the salon format. The furniture at Berhampur salons come from the IKONIC brand. The local support provided by the brand helps the salon’s operations team in their service needs.

CoLour CoDe: Themed around white elements, the salon interiors have white tiles, white-coloured units, white paint, and white furniture. White symbolises purity and openness, and the brand wanted its first outlet in Berhampur to reflect this. They have also added a touch of green to connect with the first Indulge outlet.
ViP/BriDaL room: The salon has a multi-purpose room; during the wedding season, the room is used for Bridals and during the off-season, the room is used as a double facial room. The room is also used as a VIP room with a minor change in configuration. The flexibility in design helps maximize room utilization.
Our objective for opening the salon in Berhampur was purely based on the market potential and operational support. Tip 1 The change in growing and having a healthy business would have come by doing something each month. If you do nothing then nothing will change. Below are 6 basic steps that will help you to understand the productivity in your salon along with when to increase your prices. All of this should be in place before you think about hiring another team member. Step 1: You understand your marketplace, your customer’s needs, wants, and desires and have made some changes or introduced some “magic moments”. Every customer has a story if you bother to listen and then give advice and solutions. A bit like a doctor, as they do not sell anything - they simply give relevant solutions and we choose to take the advice to help us feel better. Step 2: You have the right people to interact with your customers. These team members will totally understand where they fit in and what is expected of them and what the story is to be communicated in your business/salon. This is your “WHY” - it is the reason you opened your salon. Make sure the team understand what your WHY is so that they know what part they play and what is expected of them.
Maybe you have used Mystery Shoppers or asking customers for their feedback? Step 6: Having a Healthy Business. There are areas you should always be aware of your business to make sure it is staying healthy. From a financial perspective these are: • % of Business outgoings - Rent, wages, stock etc. • % of Wage - Team member income v Wage cost • % of Average customer spend - By the business/salon and individual team member • Your ‘service’ price level - does it include % of the profit • Discounts - only discount services that can afford it The above list is just a few of the things that you need to keep an eye on. Tip 2 Knowing your figures is very important but you won’t have good figures if the below 2 points are not considered: 1) Your customers: Are they happy and do they trust and leave your business/salon feeling special? 2) You’re Team: Do they feel respected, appreciated, rewarded and well trained? All these ingredients and more make for a healthy business and without them, you won’t be able to grow your business. Happy Team: Means they are more likely to stay loyal.
Step3: You are training your team to relate to customers. Training is fundamental to help any business grow, however, we must never forget we are in a customer facing business. Step 4: You have Standards and Systems in place for consistency which will help build customers’ trust in your business. Trust is the top reason customers return to any business! Marie Claire Salons bring Paris to Delhi
French Lifestyle Brand Marie Claire Paris recently opened the doors of its Delhi outlet. Salon proprietor Ratna Bhattacharya tells Beauty Launchpad more about the launch. Marie Claire Paris Salons - from B2C network LLP - follows a signature format across its centres in Pune, Banglore, Hyderabad, and now, New Delhi. Spread in 1100 sq. ft. area, the newly launched outlet in GK-1, New Delhi has a quintessential Parisian look and feel, with refreshing organic plants and bamboo walls that blend in with the interiors. Young and lively colours like peach as well as the Swiss wooden flooring and marble accents add to the charm overall space design. What made you enter into the salon and beauty business? The organized salon industry in India is expected to grow by 16% in the coming years. What about the education and training of the staff? Marie Claire is very particular about the technical and soft skills training of the staff. All technicians are shortlisted and trained by the authorized trainers of Marie Claire India. All staff undergo the advance technical curriculum designed by the Marie Claire Artistic team. Further, they are trained by our product partners frequently and we also provide new collection cum refreshertrainings to them, every year.
Tried & Tested Services: Dermalogica Cleanup, Waxing, and Chrome Nails RICA used for waxing and BluSky for the Nails. My chrome-finish nails lasted for a week and waxing was satisfactory, with pleasant conduct of the staff and a welcoming atmosphere at the salon. Since I had pigmentation and tanning, Dermalogica treatment was recommended after skin analysis. The therapist suggested upto 4-5 sittings for optimum results, with each taking up to 45 minutes. Dermalogica is one of my favourite brands in skincare and did not disappoint. My skin was visibly cleaner with less pigmentation in the first sitting. — Isha Gakhar
