Having been a part of the judicial system, he wanted to be a voice for victims whom he felt had been overlooked in the criminal justice process and do all he could to help the citizens of Mobile and Baldwin Counties feel safe in their homes and in their communities— and, to that end, he pursued a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives.
“Most of my time in law was spent as the Child Victims Prosecutor, handling cases where children were the victim of physical and sexual abuse, as well as internet crimes,” Simpson explains. “I had an opportunity to be the voice of the voiceless and bring justice to those who suffered unspeakable acts. I've prosecuted murderers, rapists, and some of the worst of the worst in our society. What led me to running as a representative for Alabama House District 96 was my love for helping people. This office has given me an opportunity to serve the public in a way that I never could have imagined. When Hurricane Sally hit, I was able to assist constituents who were in need to get access to the goods and services that they desperately needed. After the storm, I saw how many of our citizens were taken advantage of by scammers who were charging outrageous costs for jobs that were never completed. I'm very happy to say that I led the charge to change the law, and now home repair fraud after a natural disaster is a felony. Because of that, we can really punish those individuals who try to take advantage of others in their time of need.”

A s a former prosecutor in the Mobile and Baldwin District Attorney's Office, Matt Simpson has seen first-hand how the laws passed by the legislature affected people every day.
"This office has given me an opportunity to serve the public in a way that I never could have imagined ." AUGUST 2022 15
Despite the challenges of a pandemic and catastrophic storm, Simpson has accomplished a great many goals during his nearly four years in office. “I'm proud that our area has seen so much improvement in infrastructure, with a tremendous amount of work being done on our roads and bridges. I’ve also been able to sponsor bills that have increased punishments for those who have sexually abused our children, for those in possession of stolen guns, and for those who take advantage of citizens after damage caused by a natural disaster,” says Simpson. “Additionally, I'm happy to be on the front lines fighting to address the mental health needs in our state.
“Another challenge has been trying to slow the ever-expanding reach of a growing national government,” Simpson continues. “Too many policies are handed down from Washington to our states. We must do what we can to keep government restrained from encroaching on our everyday lives. I feel like we have done a good job responding to the overreach, but there's always more work to be done.”

“Our first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect us. Many of them have struggled to cope with all they have had to see and experience, and we owe it to them to get access to the help they need. They serve us in our time of crisis; it’s time for us to serve them.
Since his election in 2018, Simpson has faced a number of challenges, rising to meet them head-on. “I've worked very hard for the past few years to try to get some help for our first responders who have struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting from everything they have seen and experienced while serving in the line of duty,” says Simpson.

Simpson’s other goals start with the younger generation: “We've got to create an environment where our children have opportunities for high paying careers here in Alabama,” asserts the father of two, who loves to watch his son play tennis and his daughter practice baton. “Too often we lose our best and brightest students to other states to further their education or begin their professional careers. We need to make sure that they can find opportunities here in Alabama. The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, went to Baldwin County public schools. We need to provide an atmosphere where our children don't have to leave the state to find employment. Hopefully the next Apple will be right here in Alabama.”
We have been able to get mental health counselors in our schools, create crisis centers where families can take individuals struggling through mental health episodes, and create a Mental Health Court in Baldwin County to get help to those who need it. Too many people suffering from mental illness get lost in the downward spiral that is the criminal justice system. Often, they self-medicate and become addicted to drugs. They commit crimes to obtain the drugs and, unfortunately, those crimes escalate. What may start as a drug problem can turn into theft, which can then lead to violent offenses. Mental Health Court offers help to those in need before they commit violent offenses. It gives someone access to medical care and counseling before they go further down the wrong path.”

This year’s spectacular evening of dinner, dancing and auctions grossed $135,000 for North Baldwin Infirmary’s Think BIG campaign. To keep in line with the growth of healthcare services needed in north Baldwin County, the funds will help expand the operating room and other vital service lines.

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT C ancer is a diagnosis that’s devastating at any age, but even more so when that diagnosis is being given to a child. Childhood is a time that should be filled with hope and joy, with laughter and innocence, with learning and exploring and discovering a world that is limitless with possibility. It’s a time when the future is boundless, and an entire lifetime has yet to be lived. But those five little letters can have a huge impact on everything, turning what childhood should be into a dream that might not be within reach.
Strength
For the family of Caroline Berry, a diagnosis of cancer when Caroline was 14 years old cruelly shattered their hopes of a normal youth—though the brave teen met her battle with grace and incredible strength. “When our sweet Caroline was diagnosed with cancer in January of 2017, she quickly decided that she wanted her mantra to be BERRY STRONG, and her inspiration during her fight was Matthew 17:20, that faith can move mountains,” recalls her mother, Jennifer.

Sadly, Caroline’s fight ended on Thanksgiving in 2018. But her memory and her mantra became the inspiration for the Berry Strong Foundation, founded in March of 2019 by her mother and her father, Gordon. “During Caroline’s fight with cancer, she became an ambassador for childhood cancer, raising awareness and research funding so that no child would ever have to endure the same battle,” Jennifer explains. “Our sweet Caroline was the epitome of grace, courage, and strength, and she never gave up. It was her wish for her family and friends to continue what she started. She is the inspirations for all that we do, and I am so proud to be her mother.”

Another annual project for the Berry Strong Foundation happens at Thanksgiving. “We lost our sweet Caroline on Thanksgiving morning,” Jennifer explains. “As the first anniversary of her death approached, I was desperately searching for a meaningful way to get through the holiday. That’s how this project began. During Caroline’s fight, we spent multiple holidays and Thanksgivings in the hospital PICU. Most of the time, we were isolated and didn’t have the traditional meal. Because of the impact of the kindness our family received during Caroline’s fight, every Thanksgiving, we provide goody bags and adorable themed cookie boxes for the children and gift cards for Thanksgiving groceries for the families being treated in the USS Hope clinic the week of Thanksgiving. We also treat a very special inpatient and outpatient family to a fully catered meal on Thanksgiving Day.”

September is an important month for the foundation, as well, and efforts ramp up significantly. “We do many things in the community, and awareness is something that is very near and dear to our hearts. Gold is the color for childhood cancer awareness because gold is a precious metal and is therefore the perfect color to reflect the most precious thing in our lives—our children,” says Jennifer. “September is childhood cancer awareness month, and it was Caroline’s dream to #turnthetowngold every September. We work closely with local businesses, community leaders and schools to honor our sweet Caroline’s wish. It is our sincere hope that our work during September will bring awareness to childhood cancers and highlight the need for more funding and research. Caroline’s mission truly lives on through our tireless work
The Berry Strong Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that raises awareness and funds that go directly towards research dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancers. To honor Caroline’s life and continue the fight for other children, the Berry Strong Foundation is dedicated to finding safer, smarter, and more effective treatments for childhood cancer through the funding of innovative pediatric cancer research in addition to supporting local children and families battling cancer. Over the past three years, the Berry Strong Foundation has made an incredible impact on the community—and honored Caroline’s memory in each child they have touched. “We are so grateful to help our local childhood cancer families and the children being treated at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile,” says Jennifer. “We work directly with hospital social workers and child life specialists to identify the needs of those who are struggling. We also assist families with mortgage and rent payments as well as utility bills and provide families with gift cards for gas, meals, groceries, and household items. “Currently there are over 30 childhood cancer families in active treatment at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital,” Jennifer continues. “During the year, we have many special projects that directly impact these families. Every June, to honor Caroline on her birthday, we host an arts and crafts drive called ‘Crafts for a Cure’ that directly benefits the Child Life department at the hospital. This project supplies over six months of art supplies. The role of a Child Life Specialist is to help normalize the environment for pediatric cancer patients while they are hospitalized. Most of the time, this is done through distraction therapy and engaging the child in activities like painting, drawing, coloring, and games—or whatever else a patient enjoys. Our sweet Caroline spent a lot of her time drawing and doing calligraphy when she was in the hospital. That is why this project is so very special and why we do it every year to honor our sweet girl on her birthday.”
Clearly, the Berry Strong Foundation is dedicated not only to fighting the fight, but also to offering care and support. Over the lifetime of the organization, their sphere of work has widened even more than just the local community. “We have been able to generously support our first childhood cancer research grant through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Benjamin Stanton Ph.D., and The Research Institute at Nationwide affiliated with Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” Jennifer notes. “We also work with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the Alliance for Childhood Cancer on important childhood cancer issues currently before Congress. Childhood cancer is not always a topic that people want to discuss. It’s sad and depressing and easier to pretend it doesn’t exist. But we ensure that these families have a voice and are not forgotten.” In doing so, children like Caroline Berry will never be forgotten.

Community leaders and caring citizens celebrated the groundbreaking of a home being built for Johnny Stewart and his wife Krystal. The Baldwin County Home Builders Charitable Foundation and the PR Foundation partnered in a first-time project called “Home Sweet Home.” The home is being built on the same lot where Johnny’s childhood home once stood.

A fourth-generation Baldwin County native, Cox comes from a family that developed Spanish Fort Estates, so her ties to the community run deep. Over the past 27 years, she has served as a social worker, nine of which have been spent with Amedisys Home Health. To Cox, her years of work with seniors has been a calling, something which has inspired her drive to do everything she can to help them in the ways that they need it the most. In fact, she created a medical lending closet called Eastern Shore Medical Solutions that is currently run from her garage. “I accept gently used DME (or Durable Medical Equipment) and give them to low-income seniors who can’t afford to purchase them or don’t have insurance coverage,” explains Cox. “A lot of people need medical equipment for a short time and never use it again. Or someone dies and the family is left with supplies that someone else could use. People need diapers, wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, or even Ensure but can't afford them. My son and I created a Facebook
HatsHats page to make donating and distributing easier, and the whole community gets involved to help. I also do a Secret Senior Santa at Christmas for people with no family and distribute gifts to over 30 seniors. Once a year, I do an Ensure of the Elderly drive and give the protein drinks to people who need them but can’t afford them.”
This is the side of Lisa Cox dedicated to giving, to helping. But there’s another side— one that wants nothing more than to make people happy. This is where Cox’s creativity— and her intense love of hats—comes in. Naturally, there’s a story there. “My sister and I were in a Mardi Gras organization for 20 years, and I made hats each year to go with the theme of the float,” says Cox. “The first hat was a top hat I spray painted white, and I added layers, so it looked like a birthday cake with LED lights for candles for our Happy Birthday float. I tried to top it each year and learned to make hats lighter with my own bases. I can't draw or sew but started working with hot glue and feathers. I never dreamed it would grow into a business making hats that other people would want to buy.”
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT or anyone who has ever met Lisa Cox, two things stand out about this incredibly driven woman: She has a heart to help the elderly, and she loves hats with an unmatched passion.
Cox’s hat business now keeps her booked most of the year with custom orders for the Derby, Halloween, Mardi Gras, weddings—even for a few dogs. “I really don’t ever make a profit because I just buy more feathers and vintage jewelry for the next hat!” Cox notes. “Making hats and helping people in home health both provide help and happiness. It all goes together."
“Hats are like putting on a superhero cape or having magical powers. When you wear a hat, you stand taller, you feel more secure. People look at you, and you feel empowered like you are special. I love giving that to someone through the hats that I create. If I have a bad day, I go to my workroom. I turn on the hot glue gun and start to feel better. I didn't know this part of me was there and how much I needed to create. I have a vision board with things I like, and I will wake up at two in the morning and start working on an idea. Sometimes it starts with a picture and turns out nothing like it. Still, I love these hats. I actually get emotionally attached to each hat I make and name my favorite ones after famous women or a favorite song.”

But grown, it has, and now Pcox (her middle name is Patrice) has become a fully realized business selling custom-made hats and fascinators. My mother swears the first word I said was ‘hat’ and that I would throw a temper tantrum if I left the house without wearing one,” Cox laughs.

William: I started out in my dad’s catering business doing whatever he asked me to do when I was just a kid. Leighton was by my side back then as he is now. I love that I am back at home in Mobile alongside my dad and one of my best friends since childhood continuing to share the great food for which the Morrissette name is known.
What sets you apart?
Clifton: Our aim is to exceed our customers culinary dreams and desires. Whether it is an intimate dinner party or an event for 3000+, we take pride in fulfilling the wish list of our clients with the freshest ingredients available to create the most delicious food.
Clifton: My favorite entrée is fried oysters. It was the first thing I learned to cook proficiently from one of my dad’s best friends, Dr. Bobby Mudd, at the hunting camp when I was just 12 years old. To this day, fried oysters are my number one requested item for events.
What do you love the most about what you do? What I love most about what I do is that it’s never work for me. It is always fun. I love cooking. It’s my passion. I love making people happy with the dishes I prepare for them. Do you have a favorite entrée or dish? I’m a big seafood eater. I love our seafood pasta dish with shrimp, scallops, blue crab, and homemade pasta. What is the one ingredient you can't live without and why? The ingredients I love to use on a daily basis that I can’t live without are fresh basil, garlic, white wine, and butter. These ingredients are things that make a dish great.
What do you love the most about our local food scene and cuisine? I love that our area has so many different types of cuisines and restaurants that are locally owned by really great hometown people.

What sets you apart? Being a female Chef allows me insight into industry trends that might sometimes be overlooked. I’m also fairly practical, so I want to create interesting food that is still approachable. What do you love the most about what you do? I majored in biology and minored in Chemistry in undergrad, so I’ve always been attracted to the sciences, but cooking allows me to take that and combine it with the artistic part of my personality that was dormant for a long time. Getting a vision for a dish, taking it to the next level and seeing our guest's smile as they enjoy what I have made is very satisfying.
Do you have a favorite entrée or dish? My favorite sandwich is the Burrata Press. We make our own pesto, which tastes delicious when combined with fresh tomatoes, gooey burrata and the ciabatta roll. It gets the Chef’s kiss!
How would you describe your brand?
I have three kids so it needs to be kid friendly, but I would say my Chuck Roast. It’s a family recipe, and we have a tradition of making French Dip sandwiches with the leftovers.
In March of 2009, Joe opened his first restaurant: Master Joe's Sushi. Master Joe's Sushi is an unrivaled jewel of Eastern Shore cuisine. The Sushi at Master Joe's simply outpaces anything available in the area. As soon as Joe opened his doors, Sushi-lovers from all over South Alabama were flocking to his restaurant; and with some Masterregularity.Joemay have taken a winding road to end up a successful restaurateur and sushi chef in Fairhope, but he is grateful that people of this community have been so welcoming and receptive!
Master Joe didn't always go by "Master Joe". Before he adopted the name "Joe", he went by Xian Chu Ou. He chose "Joe" when he first arrived in America, to make it easier on the people he met in his new country. He also didn't always have the title "Sushi Master".
Originally, Joe was a doctor working in South East China. But he couldn't resist when the opportunity to move to Japan and study under a true sushi master presented itself. He studied for ten long years under a formal sushi program in Japan, spending months on just the very basics of cutting cucumbers before moving onto anything more substantial.

W hile Jennifer Shirley may have three kids at home, the Realtor feels the importance of having something to devote herself to outside of her family. “Not to take anything away from stay-at-home moms, because they are my heroes,” says Shirley, who has been a licensed real estate agent since 2006 and now works for Bellator Real Estate & Development. “But for me personally, I enjoy working and being able to have some separation from life at home and my work life. I feel accomplished when I'm done after a day of working but equally accomplished when I lay down at night after wearing my mom hat!”
Mom to a twelve, nine and six-year-old, Shirley knows that her kids are watching her to find an example, and she knows that what they see is her drive. “I think my kids are taught a sense of work ethic and also learn to appreciate the things we have and do because of our hard work,” she says.

“I received this award in 2017, and it made me realize that you can be as successful as you want in your career, but at the end of the day it's the impression you leave with people that truly matters. I want my children to know that very thing. I always tell them, ‘You get what you give,’ and I live by that! I hope they will Theretoo.”are, of course, stressors at her job. But Shirley’s love for her work is something that keeps her passionate—even in the midst of stress. “I have learned that every single transaction and real estate experience is different, and it’s best to put the fires out behind the scenes so that my clients have a stressfree experience. I love to make and see people happy, so if that means taking on a little extra stress so that my clients don't have to, I'm all about it!”
In her career, she has accomplished a great deal to take pride in, but Shirley also sees the correlation between life and work lessons—and she hopes to pass those on to her kids. “There is an award given by our company called the Eric A. Jones Award that is voted on by our peers and decided on by management,” she says.

As invested as she is in her work, Shirley is dedicated to showing her children that they are her priority. “I want them to know that everything I do is, ultimately, always for them,” she says. “And that when I'm with them, I'm all in. I'm involved a lot in my children’s school's PTA, serve on the board of a well-known foundation, and volunteer my time with charities as much as I can. I often feel guilty because it does take time away sometimes, but it also teaches them about balance and also to give of their time when they can to enrich others' lives.”

As her children get older, she hopes to leave them with memories of their time together and of all the ways that she showed her love for them. “I don't like to go a day without kissing them goodnight or good morning,” Shirley says. “So when I go out of town or they stay the night away somewhere, when we say goodbye, I'll kiss them goodnight/good morning the number of days we'll be apart! They used to hate it, but now they lean in and go along with it. Not sure what I'll do when they go off to college, but we'll see.”
At 39, Shirley still knows that life has lessons to teach her—and some of those lessons come from her kids. “I've learned that every person is different and needs different things at different times,” she notes. “I'm a big believer in love languages. My children all have different love languages for how they like to give and receive love, and once you learn that about the people in your life, relationships become easier and more fulfilling.”

T here’s a distinct feeling of escapism in the home that Robert and Renee Burroughs own in Orange Beach. It’s a sense of grandeur that fits the Mediterranean architecture, which is surrounded by lush tropical plants and a landscape to match. Built in the early 2000s, the home boasts large, concrete pillars across the back supporting the second story of the structure, with a stucco exterior and a beautiful terracotta roof. Clearly, this home checks all the boxes for the Burroughs, offering them a great escape from work life in Laurel: the water, the view, the luxury. And—of course—space for their three fur babies.

Patients and supporters from across the Gulf Coast “masked out” cancer for one night at this fundraising event as everyone celebrated local cancer survivors and those still fighting. Attendees enjoyed music from the Modern Eldorados and dinner from Guidos Restaurant, plus plenty of beverages and spirits, including specialty drinks from The Hope Farm and Fairhope Brewing Company. BRIDE EMILY + WILL 70 SOCIAL EASTERN SHORE
W hile their high school romance might not have lasted through the first year of college, Emily Tarlton and Will Killion found that love lasts when they reunited in 2019 and spent the first year of their newly rekindled relationship in quarantine. Then, one hot Saturday in May of 2021, Will asked the question that changed their future forever. “I could tell something was up when I came over to my parents’ house to lay out by the pool,” Emily recalls. “Both my mom and dad were frantically cleaning. I didn’t think too much of it and went outside to lay out. My sister and best friend had planned for Will to come over to the house to get me for drinks before the proposal and then a small engagement party at my parents’ house in Fairhope. When Will arrived at the house, my hair was in a topknot, and I was sweaty from the pool. He asked me if I could be ready in 30 minutes. My reply was, ‘Ummm, have you met me?’ I frantically got dressed and tried to make my hair decent. We arrived at Sunset Point, and Will ordered a top shelf margarita— which was the first sign that something big was happening. When we left, Will asked if I wanted to look at the new retreat center at Sacred Heart Chapel. We got to the chapel, and Will dragged me down to the bay, where he got on one knee and popped the question.”

Naturally, Emily said yes—and then, just over a year later on June 11, 2022, she said yes again at the altar of Sacred Heart Catholic Chapel in Fairhope. Wearing a strapless mermaid silhouette gown with a sweetheart neckline and rouching along the bodice. With their 16 attendants standing by, Emily and Will exchanged their vows, surrounded by their friends and family. “My family lives out of town, and this was the first wedding out of all the cousins that every single person was able to be there,” Emily, who works as an Exercise Physiologist in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab for Mobile Infirmary, while Will is an attorney at Holtsford Gilliland in Daphne. “But what made our wedding even more unique were the people standing on the alter with us. Will and I both had bridesmaids and groomsmen from every stage of life, from elementary, high school…all the way to adulthood. It made our day that more special because of the memories shared with all of them.”

Making the day even more memorable, the priest forgot the ring exchange at the wedding. Even so, the couple were pronounced married. After reconvening at The Venue in Fairhope, the newlyweds joined their guests for a buffetstyle reception and an unforgettable party. “It was so hot outside that I’m pretty sure everyone had at least a few ‘adult beverages’ to drink, but no one felt anything because we were too busy sweating,” Emily recalls with a laugh.
Having enjoyed their fill of food and dancing—first dance, father-daughter, and even a dance with her grandfather— Emily and Will cut into a four-tier almond cake adorned with a cascade of flowers that matched the flowers in the bouquet—and the cake exchange wasn’t exactly prim and proper. “I shoved the cake in Will’s face during the cake cutting, and the kids loved that,” Emily says.

More laughter came with the bouquet toss. “Will wouldn’t let go of my waist as I was trying to throw the bouquet, because I was determined to stand on the stage, and he was worried I was going to fall backwards,” says Emily. “All the while, I’m pushing him away, saying, ‘This is my moment!’ The crowd was rolling.” Of course, Emily had designs on who would catch the bouquet: “My sister caught the bouquet, but I may have thrown it straight at her,” she admits. “I was probably more excited than she or her boyfriend were!” After a late-night snack of truffle fries from Tamara’s Downtown, the party came to a close, and the newlyweds were sent off to start their honeymoon in Costa Rica. “We ziplined, rode horses, hiked in the rainforest, kayaked, paddle boarded, relaxed by the pool and met so many amazing people.”
Now back home in Daphne, Will and Emily are beginning their life together and looking forward to a future filled with new memories.

Since then, the race has become an annual tradition, beloved by those who have raced it year after year. It’s also a great short distance or “sprint” tri for first-timers. The Grandman is important to Mobile Baykeeper because it helps raise money to protect the health and beauty of the Mobile Bay Watershed.
