ith its white painted brick and flush mortar façade, the home that Tyler and Shelley Richardson own along the wetlands of Mandeville is something of a nod to French country construction, a modern take on classic design that stands proudly amid immaculately manicured landscaping. Set back from the road, the long drive ends in a circular approach to the home punctuated with a fountain that perfectly completes the picture and adds to its elegance. APRIL 2022

BELLE MAISON
Behind the French doors at the entryway, a large, light-filled living space invites a cozy stay by the massive sac-washed fireplace that holds pride of place in the space, flanked on either side by floating shelves and cabinets that offer minimalist storage and display space. Overhead, a catwalk extends the length of the space and leads from one side of the home to the other. Its natural and painted wood accents echo the natural wood look of the tile floor below and the overall whiteness of the home’s aesthetic, broken only by minimal use of neutrals and details like the pecky Cypress wood mantle in the living room.

BELLE MAISON
It is something of a blank canvas for the finishes that make the otherwise muted spaces notable: the taxidermy heads that overlook the capacious billiard room, all bagged by the homeowners on various hunting trips across the country; the artwork by local Louisiana artists; the barn door enclosures of spaces off the main rooms; the elegant light fixtures throughout the home. Even in its lack of color, the home is still inviting—and that was precisely what the Richardsons hoped to achieve in the spaces, a sense of welcome that was still stylish and not overly done. “Everything was inspired by or decorated by Lesle Veca Designs and V Home & Interiors,” says Shelley, who works as a Senior Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch, while Tyler owns Tour Big Easy and Zip NOLA, the world’s first fully aquatic zipline located in Laplace. “I wanted our house to be easy on the eyes and comfortable.” “Comfortable” is certainly a perfect descriptor for the home, as is “easy on the eyes”—especially where the kitchen is concerned. Boasting white custom cabinets crowned with Taj Mahal Quartzite in the L-shaped space, the kitchen is an entertainer’s dream, with double islands that offer a great deal of prep space as well as seating. Stainless Frigidaire appliances are accented by a stainless-steel hood vent and steel pendant lighting above the bar seating. “Along with the living room, the kitchen is our favorite room in the house,” says Shelley. With two small children, these two spaces are used a great deal— and will continue to be, as the toddlers grow, and family time becomes even more important. 22

With busy work and family schedules, the Richardsons naturally needed a space of their own that would provide respite. Their massive master bedroom adjoins a master bath that is spa-like in its accommodations: a capacious tub that overlooks windows with a view of the backyard, his-and-hers vanities at opposite ends of the room, and a walk-in double shower with glass doors and windows. Again, there is no departure from the color palette shared by the rest of the home, no explosion of colors in these spaces that are so personally theirs.

hen Frank Stuart and Vince Liuzza met at a Mardi Gras “Bag of Donuts” show in 2000, they might not have imagined that 22 years later, they’d be a power couple, co-owning a business together and sharing a life. But Frank, with his aggressive, big-picture nature, and organized, detail-oriented, managerial-minded Liuzza seem to be an incredible team.
Stuart has continued to work full-time as a Nurse Anesthetist since 2000 while in the process of building their growing business portfolio, which includes Liuzza Realty Group, Southern Window Accents and the recently launched Pinnacle Staffing Solutions, which helps place nurses & nurse anesthetists in hospitals. The two men have their days filled with real estate
negotiations, window treatments, and job placements as they oversee the companies that will become their legacy. Making their mark seems to be their raison d’etre, and they are indeed making an impact. But the secret to their success? Balance. “Frank is a real estate ‘blood hound’ and has a knack of finding unique opportunities that others have not had the vision to pursue,” says Liuzza. “I then put the deal together, negotiate the terms, close it and sell the finished product. Meanwhile, Frank is off finding the next opportunity. That is an example of the balance we have—Frank’s aggressiveness and my methodical management, combined with a comfort level of taking on risk in all that we do.” Their combined efforts have resulted in over 170 million dollars in real estate and development sales since 2000. Still primarily focused on real estate speculation and development, Stuart and Liuzza have a burning passion for the art of making deals and creating properties that people love to buy—and those properties dot the map from Louisiana’s NorthShore to Pensacola Beach, Florida. At the end of the day, however, they still have the same goal of working hard to build for the future and then enjoy what they have worked so hard to build—together, as a power couple.
“Frank is a real estate ‘blood hound’ and has a knack of finding unique opportunities that others have not had the vision to pursue,” says Liuzza. “I then put the deal together, negotiate the terms, close it and sell the finished product.”

s husband and wife co-owners of Love More Hot Yoga, Dom and Jo Luke are partners in all things—and they have a work/ life relationship that reflects the strength of their bond.
After meeting on Match.com, the couple had a whirlwind romance that led to marriage, several moves, the creation of several businesses, and three children—all in the space of eight years. It is their love for each other and their personal character strengths that make them such a dynamic partnership, as each brings a particular set of assets to the team. “Dom is a natural born leader,” says Jo. “He has the ability to be able to help you see your own strengths and implement them, sometimes without you even knowing. He is a very hard worker and does what needs to be done—as his motto from Pararescue states, ‘These things we do, That Others May Live.’ He lives by that in all areas of his life.” “Jo has a teacher’s love and uses her experiences and knowledge as an elementary school teacher to keep us grounded and humble,” says Dom. “That, along with her joyful personality, are an incredible strength that she brings to the company.” Offering warm and hot vinyasa yoga classes, yin and long slow deep classes, foundations classes, specialty classes and workshops, FST, reiki, massage, compression therapy, and NKT, Love More Hot Yoga sets itself apart by being more than a yoga studio. “We offer a judgement-free space for people to come and move their bodies and minds in a way that makes sense to them,” says Dom. Adds Jo, “We do our best to help remind people that everything they need is inside themselves, and we create a movement to come back to LOVE in all ways and to LOVE MORE.”

aul Rubio and Sara Huggins first came to know one another through La Carreta, at the time Sara was a frequent customer and Saul was always working. Their relationship later blossomed after running into each other at a breakfast diner one night. He invited her to join him at his table and they have been serving the community side-by-side ever since.
Together, they bring strength to their businesses and conquer any challenges that come their way. Sara has become a key player in Rubio Enterprises, LLC, by helping Saul bring his business ideas and visions for innovation to life. “We work incredibly as a team and enjoy bouncing new ideas off of one another,” says Sara. “It is important to both of us to create an atmosphere where we can serve and entertain people and stay involved in our local community.”

With five businesses under his parent corporation, Saul has created a humble legacy in the restaurant industry. But, at the end of the day, it all comes down to one word: “Hospitality,” he says. “It isn’t just about the food we serve, it’s about the experience that we are able to provide to our customers. Having a diverse group of restaurants allows us a unique opportunity to provide the perfect experience for any type of occasion. La Carreta and Si Señor offer a fresh, fun, festive atmosphere to enjoy after work margaritas and sizzling fajitas. One thirteen is our favorite place for a date night or lunch on the terrace. fter meeting at church in 2014, it only took a year of dating for Rob and Mariana Verdi to know that they were meant for each other. The two married in 2016, and so began the teamwork that became such a cornerstone of their partnership—both in their marriage and in their work as the owners of The Hospitality Collection and the companies within that parent brand: Southern Hospitality Event Rentals, Southern Approach, Tent Pro USA, Clover Johns and SoHo 180. Naturally, Rob and Mariana each bring a strength to the table, and those strengths complement one another. “I’d say Rob is more of a driver and a visionary,” says Mariana, while Rob notes the characteristics that make his wife such a perfect helpmeet: “Mariana is more of a processor and thinks more through the actual details of how to get from point A to point B,” he says. “She always encourages me to dream, but her strengths allow me to process things at a deeper level and help stretch me to work on the how, rather than the what.”
For the Verdis, it has long been a dream to own their own warehouse, and they recently acquired the 40,000 square foot building in which they have based their companies, located in Abita Springs. As much as a dream come true as that is for the dynamic couple, their companies seem to be built on dreams. “SHER was formed by purchasing $350 in silver beaded chargers, and now, 12 years later, to employ a team of 30 employees and have 40,000 square feet filled with inventory is really incredible,” says Rob. “This is why we truly believe in dreaming big and having clear vision to make those dreams become a reality.”

We expanded our hospital wings to give
them wings to soar.
At Children’s Hospital New Orleans, our transformed hospital was designed with kids at the center - with 50 percent more space, 40 pediatric specialties, and more than 600 pediatric providers. Today, as the Gulf South’s largest children’s hospital, there are so many big reasons to choose Children’s Hospital New Orleans. But we like to focus on the little ones. We’ve built extraordinary, because they are.

ith so many different diseases, epidemics, and medical issues plaguing the nation, healthcare is a challenging field. And to be the president and CEO of a hospital—any hospital, for that matter— takes a great deal of dedication, foresight, diplomacy, and understanding. But the need for those characteristics come even more into play for the president and CEO of a children’s hospital. Luckily for Children’s Hospital New Orleans, the man bearing those titles meets those demands and then some, using his position and deep knowledge of the healthcare industry to serve the needs of the children of Louisiana in the best way possible.
With more than 25 years of pediatric healthcare experience under his belt, when John Nickens took on his current role at Children’s Hospital New Orleans in 2017, the former Executive Vice President at Texas Children’s Hospital brought with him a particular understanding of children’s health and the challenges it faces. He also brought with him a passion that has been the impetus for his success and his continued dedication to his work. “As a father to three girls, I have always been motivated by the idea that I could impact the health of the next generation,” Nickens says. “I see the impact of our care firsthand every day, and that is what motivates me. We are making a lifechanging difference for the children and families under our care, and there is nothing more meaningful.”

and families of Louisiana despite the unforeseen challenges that came our way,” he says. “Our team is resilient and has an unwavering commitment to serve all children. Often, that has meant sacrificing time with their own families to continue to stand in the gap for the children and families who depend on us. While navigating an unprecedented time with the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurricane Ida, and surges of RSV and COVID-19, coupled with staffing challenges, we completed the $300 million expansion of our New Orleans campus while recruiting some of
Naturally, his reputation for getting things done precedes him, and Nickens is more than living up to expectation. Since coming to New Orleans, he has made remarkable changes to Children’s Hospital, creating an incredible culture for the hospital’s team members, expanding access to vital pediatric services across the entire state, launching the hospital’s first electronic medical record, completing the hospital's $300 million campus expansion project, recruiting top pediatric experts in the country, and creating a new academic partnership with Tulane University School of Medicine, in addition to the hospital's longstanding affiliation with LSU Health New Orleans.. Naturally, the challenges of the last two years have been tough to overcome, but Nickens has led Children’s Hospital with a steady hand. “It is incredible to reflect on the last two years and all that we have accomplished for the children 44

the best pediatric providers in the nation, expanding vital programs, and growing our satellite clinics across the state and region to improve access to specialized pediatric care close to home for families.” Even as he stands toe-to-toe with some formidable obstacles, Nickens keeps his focus on the future of Children’s Hospital. “While continuing to expand specialized pediatric programs and recruit top talent to change the dynamics of pediatric healthcare for Louisiana and the Gulf South in our hospital and clinics, we are also focused on meeting kids and families where they are,” he says. “With innovative community-based programs like our ThriveKids student wellness program, we are bringing health services directly to kids in schools to support best possible health and academic outcomes. We have also added programs like our Trauma and Grief Center, with a focus on meeting the significant mental and behavioral health needs of children and families across our community.”
Parents often wonder when to bring their child to see a Dentist for the 1st time. Your child should visit the pediatric dentist by his/her 1st birthday.
Trust Your Little Ones With Us! WHAT SETS US APART
We have a practice that creates a safe, fun, and rewarding atmosphere for both children and their parents. It is our mission to treat each child as if they were our own, to deliver the highest quality dental care, to introduce dentistry to children in a fun and entertaining environment, and to emphasize preventative dentistry that will last a lifetime!
A FUN ATMOSPHERE
While your child is waiting to be seen, they will be able to quickly find their way to the gaming area. They will also have the option of watching a movie as we stream from Netflix and Disney+. As a new patient, your child will receive their very own t-shirt and to complete their visit with a smile, they will get to choose a special prize from our prize drawer.
A COMPLETE EXPERIENCE
Our staff is knowledgeable and understanding when dealing with the children and their parents. We understand that the children may be uneasy, so our staff gets on their level to reassure their safety and gain their trust. Rest assured that, as the parents, you can ask any questions that may arise. We guarantee that we will do our very best to assist you and be able to provide you with a proper response.
Clearly, the man has a passion for children and ensuring they receive one high standard of care, and he’s made that passion a great motivator for getting things done. “Children’s Hospital is uniquely positioned to eliminate fragmentation and bring together the best of the best in pediatric healthcare to challenge the status quo,” says Nickens, who also serves on the boards of the Audubon Institute, Louisiana Children’s Museum, and Baylor University as in addition to overseeing pediatric services across the LCMC Health system. “Now is the time to transform how we provide healthcare for our kids. The consistent ranking of our state as one of the worst in child health outcomes does not match the rich culture and passion of the people of Louisiana. At Children’s Hospital New Orleans, we are motivated by our vision to build a healthier, happier future for all kids - right now.

It was the perfect sunny day for a doggie parade and some Mardi Gras fun! The 28th annual Mardi Paws parade rolled through Downtown Covington and there were so many amazing floats, krewes, and pups. Big, small, and in-between, these dogs were strutting their stuff with their krewes in tow. The theme this year was 80’s PAWP CULTURE and everyone in attendance delivered their best 80’s fashions. We already can’t wait until next year!

JENNI VEGA STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI “If I were not here tomorrow, would our community notice?” asked Jenni Vega, Northlake Christian School’s Secondary School Principal. In a world where serving others is a top priority, Jenni is living out her Godcentered purpose by impacting her community on a daily basis. Starting in her own home, Jenni describes life with her husband, Reggie, and four children Jordie, Dominick, Abigail, and Andrea. The Vega family is known for their influence at New Beginnings Church, which started as a small Bible study in their home about 12 years ago. “We jokingly refer to our family as the von Trapps since it isn’t an unusual sight to see at least four Vegas on the stage on any given Sunday morning,” joked Jenni. “My family has also participated in the Pura Vida Mission Club through Northlake Christian School where we have traveled to Costa 60

Rica on mission trips as well as met needs of our local community through food and supply distributions when possible.” “After Hurricane Ida, my family and I wanted to help those less fortunate in our community and surrounding areas. We spent our days cooking for linemen and for people in communities that were without power for a long time. It was such a blessing to help in this way,” said Jenni. Jenni’s faithful service doesn’t stop there. Her biggest mission field is leading staff and students at Northlake Christian School.
Feeling healthy and happy Truly, happiness begins with feeling healthy. At Christwood, you’ll find wellness options everywhere. You can swim in our heated indoor pool, take a fitness class, play pickleball and ping-pong, and so much more. After working up a sweat, you’ll love being pampered in our salon and spa.
“Northlake Christian truly is a special place. The loving family atmosphere and genuine care that the school family has for each other makes NCS a bright spot on the Northshore. While it is not a perfect place, the student-focused culture provides an opportunity for genuine relationship building amongst teachers and students as well as partnership between teachers and parents which all work together to set our students up for success,” explained Jenni. Living out the “Wolverine Way” mantra to THINK critically, LEAD courageously, and SERVE faithfully is something Jenni says is evident within the school walls as well as outside. “Every adult on our campus shares that purpose and passion as we guide our students. Whether it’s the teachers crafting engaging, meaningful lessons or the students are serving our community at a plethora of local charities, the importance of the Wolverine Way in action is evident,” said Jenni. Challenging both herself and others, Jenni continues to help plant seeds to grow a more spiritual community on the Northshore and pour into the lives of future Christian leaders. APRIL 2022

Ashley Cash
SUPER MOM
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
After running her own business as a wedding planner and designer for almost a decade, Ashley Cash had to pivot in 2020 and meet the market where it was at. With events being at a standstill, Cash turned full-time to balloon artistry, creating beautiful balloon garlands and displays for clients. Now, The Graceful Host Shop in Covington has become a one-stop source for all things
party, including party supplies and décor for all occasions, as well as gift wrap, cards, and gifting items. The colorful, fun retail party shop also features a balloon bar for walkin or call-ahead helium balloon bouquet orders, and they are widely known for their balloon installations while also offering party planning and design services.

ith so much on her plate in running the shop and all its many facets, active parenting could fall by the wayside, but Cash is dedicated to being present for her two boys—though she freely admits she struggles to balance everything. “I am often asked how I do it all, and my answer is always that I’m not!” says Cash, whose husband has a job that demands an extensive amount of travel. “It’s impossible to do all the things and be all the things for everyone all the time. I frequently use the analogy of juggling. At any given moment, I’m juggling a lot of balls; but I prioritize my juggling act and which balls can drop because they really aren’t that important. I don’t have it all figured out, by any means. But I do make it a habit to reflect each month and take stock of what worked and what didn’t—both in my personal family life and in my business. This has helped me make necessary changes to systems and practices that weren’t serving me well, and I lean into those things that are serving me well.” With a three-year-old and a five-year-old at home, the need to be there for them is certainly acute, but Cash also sees the importance of what she is showing them in pursuing something that fulfills her. “I feel that being a working mother has shown my boys life skills and qualities that I wish for them to learn and emulate as they grow into adulthood,” says the 34-year-old. “They can learn all about the importance of hard work and sacrifice when it comes to building a business and a career, and they can see from my example that you can follow your dreams and achieve anything you set your mind to. They also see that their dad and I are a team and work together to maintain a home and care for them with love. In turn, we are teaching them that when they are fathers and husbands, they can contribute to and play an equal role in their household with their family.”

Cash also hopes they carry her love for them into their adult lives, knowing how important they were to every decision she made. “Without a doubt, my children are a huge driving force in my business, and I hope that my boys realize when they are older how everything I’ve done was with them in mind,” she says. “I worked hard to create a legacy that would make them proud of their mom, and I hope that they will see that I did my best to juggle my roles as mom and business owner. And that at the end of the day, I gave them everything I had and tried to create fun, lifelong memories as a family.” Those memories are, indeed, special and fun—Cash has done an incredible job in creating unique moments and traditions with her boys. “I absolutely love family traditions, and I am always on the hunt for creating new ones with our little family,” she says. “A lot of our family traditions revolve around their birthday celebrations. I love the idea of celebrating this special life I was gifted, reflecting on how they’ve grown and changed during their last trip around the sun, and thinking about all the adventures that lay ahead. I create a big helium bouquet with their age and a few favorite characters and activities in balloon shapes, and we wake up the boys with the balloons on their birthday morning. Then, we also dump loose air-filled balloons in their room while they sleep so they wake up to a party.
We also started a tradition of taking off from work and school for their birthday and spending a solo day with the birthday kid—just mom and usually dad, giving undivided attention, doing something fun! Their actual birthdays are just spent with the four of us, and then we weave in family celebrations during their birthday party weekend, since my husband’s family members usually travel in for a visit.” As a party planner, Cash knows the importance of celebrations. As a mom, she knows that celebrating her children is one of the most important things she can do. APRIL 2022

BUMBLING INTO LOVE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
It only took a few months on Bumble for Jenna Luteman to see Jordan Folse’s profile and swipe right, and when the two of them actually met, they both realized they were a great match. “He was so cute, and I loved his sense of humor,” Jenna says of what immediately drew her to Jordan. “He’s always making me laugh.”

hree years of dating later, Jordan knew that he wanted Jenna to be his wife. “He kept the proposal simple and quaint,” recalls Jenna, who owns J. Renee’ Color Studio in Covington, while Jordan works as a registered nurse in home healthcare. “I walked into our kitchen when I got home from work, and he had roses and champagne waiting on the counter. I knew something was up, and before I knew it he was down on one knee!”
Just over a year later, on November 12, 2021, Jenna wore a classic, off-the-shoulder fit-to-flare gown as she walked down the aisle at Jacmel Inn in Hammond to meet Jordan at the altar. As their family watched, the two exchanged vows, with a close friend of Jordan’s officiating. “He was so nervous, but he did such a great job, and we had a blast at the ceremony,” Jenna says. “One thing that made it so incredibly special was that we kept the ceremony private, with only our family around us. We each have one sibling, so they stood by us, and that was it!”

“One thing that made it so incredibly special was that we kept the ceremony private, with only our family around us. We each have one sibling, so they stood by us, and that was it!”
After being pronounced married, the newlyweds enjoyed a cocktail hour with their family, then joined 80 of their closest friends and family for a reception at the inn, where they indulged in passed hors d’ oeuvres and dined on a buffet featuring duck andouille gumbo, chicken fettuccine and steak tips. “We wanted to celebrate with everyone, so it was the perfect way to get the best of both—the intimate ceremony, and the big party,” Jenna notes. After dining and dancing, the couple cut into an almond cake with fresh strawberry filling—and elegant confection that stood in direct contrast to the groom’s cake, which was a creative masterpiece made to look like a redfish in an ice chest with Miller Lites. “You couldn’t sum Jordan up any better than that!” Jenna says with a laugh. After being sent off with well wishes and happy toasts to the future, the newly married Folses were on their way to their honeymoon in Playa Mujeres at a couples-only resort aptly called Beloved. “It was gorgeous, and I can’t think of a more beautiful place to spend our first days as a married couple,” Jenna contends. Now back home, the Folses are looking forward to spending their lives together—and never having to swipe right again. APRIL 2022

IMPACT & GIVE BACK
LET ME WIN BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
F
or nations all over the world, the Olympics is a show of strength, fortitude, and grace. Athletes train for their entire lives for the opportunity to compete, putting hours of sweat and sacrifice into achieving their dream.
The goal is no different for those athletes with intellectual disabilities. The dedication and drive is just as strong, the passion just as deep. And for more than 50 years, Special Olympics Louisiana has been giving those impassioned athletes a stage on which to compete and a platform that lets them shine. “The Special Olympics athlete motto is, ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt,’” says Toni Wright, Director of Corporate and Community Partnerships for SOLA. “I watch this in action at every competition I attend. Many of our athletes have accepted the challenge to participate in sports and are accomplishing things never imagined. They are rising up to become all they are capable of being. Every time they step up to train or compete, they are learning more and risking more. When they arrive at state games, they are competing at new levels. They and their families experience true joy as they compete. In our mission statement, it says that our athletes ‘demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of their gifts, skills and friendship.’ This is inspiring to watch.” For these athletes, SOLA provides incredibly important opportunities in both physical and emotional realms. “The intellectual disability community faces many challenges, especially in being considered an equal member of society,” says Wright. “These challenges may start early in school when they are separated from their peers and are seen as different. Many times, our population can become isolated and socially set apart. These situations do not allow the athlete to grow and develop further due to lack of interaction. In Special Olympics, our programs begin as early as two years old and are 80

all focused on four key things. Firstly, being active and building strength and coordination, Second, engaging and playing with others, which creates socialization, breaks the isolation and provides opportunity for social growth. Third, inclusion, which encourages those with and without disabilities to play on an equal playing field. This teaches those without disabilities about those born with disabilities and helps to lower barriers for the athletes as they become engaged with new friends and activities. Lastly, increased health is seen as the athletes engage in our programs. The overall value and benefit for the athlete to participate in any of our programs is both physical and emotional health.” More than 100 events are held each year in Louisiana for SOLA athletes, with more coming in 2022 as more virtual events and more fundraising events are added. Local area teams practice weekly in training for regional area competitions, with the next level of competition being hosted by the state office. Nine state level competitions each year bring athletes from all areas of the state together. “Our athletes are held to similar standards as regular sporting events,” says Wright. “Special Olympics USA Games are held every four years. The next games will be this June in Orlando, Florida. Over 4,000 athletes from the United States and the Caribbean will compete in each of their sports.” In alternate four years, the Special Olympics World Games are held, and SOLA is sending over 100 delegates to the upcoming USA Games. Funds are currently being raised for the entire delegation’s expenses.
SOLA athletes are recruited through programs in over 600 public schools across the state, where athletes under the age of 21 can engage. Ages 8 years and above are welcome in the local training programs and qualify to be in the program by having an intellectual disability. Athletes are required to provide a health screening by a medical professional and fill out an application on the website. Naturally, funding for the program must be raised. “SOLA raises all of its own funding,” says Wright. “We are a formal 501c3 and pursue grant opportunities, corporate sponsorships, and private donations. The majority of these contacts are new to SOLA, and we are raising further awareness as we meet with new potential corporate partners. As we continue to grow our programs, we are expanding our reach to new corporate donors, foundations, and individuals.”
