That current position entails managing Fidelity Bank’s Small Business Association (SBA) Loan Portfolio and assisting lenders with preparing files for submission for approval. “In a nutshell, I’m the go-to person for all things SBA at Fidelity Bank,” Purvis explains. “I enjoy helping people, both co-workers and clients alike. The satisfaction of being able to use my expertise to help a client get access to the capital they need to grow and to show other lenders how to replicate that success is very rewarding.”

22 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

But just as video killed the radio star, the internet brought about the imminent demise of music stores. Luckily for Purvis, his dream shifted before it even took off. “I had a chance opportunity to begin working as a part-time teller in 2008 while I was in school and had a string of great managers and mentors who inspired me,” says Purvis, who is now Vice President, SBA Lending Program Lead at Fidelity Bank. “I find myself in this industry for a decade-and-a-half and have a hard time imagining what it would be like doing anything else. I’ve done everything from working as a teller to a consumer lender to a learning and development specialist and business banker, and I’ve had great fun along the way. All of those experiences have helped give me the tools to be successful in my current position.”

R

The processes involved in his work are, of course, where Purvis shines—and where he proves his greatest value to his clients. “The loan process varies based on purpose, size, and complexity of the business’s operations,” he says. “But to achieve the best chance at success, I recommend that my lenders speak with me early on in their discussions with a borrower or invite me along to the meeting. If we’re able to cover a lot of detail on the front end of a client making a request, we’re able to gather much of what’s needed early on, lay out a plan, and make the process quick and efficient. When a lender and borrower work together to get everything they need at the beginning, requests can be turned around very quickly.”

eality looks a whole lot different for Shane Purvis than he imagined it would, back when he was in college at Southeastern. In fact, the young college student had no intention of a career in finance—the only reason he was pursuing anything related to the big bad world of finance was because he wanted to be well-rounded and knowledgeable about business, for the sole purpose of owning his own music store.

Born and raised in Slidell, Purvis moved to Mandeville with his wife in 2017. As a longtime resident of the area, as well as a husband and now father of a two-year-old daughter, community is important to Purvis. He volunteers with the Small Business Council at the St. Tammany Chamber and with the Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association, where he serves as treasurer. “My mother was a teacher, and my father owns a finance company in Slidell, so one of my biggest passions is giving back by teaching financial literacy to small business owners in the area,” he says. “I’ve participated in many roundtables and peer-to-peer groups put on by the Chamber, Small Business Development Center, and SBA.

As with any job—and especially one in finance—there are challenges. “The SBA’s guidelines are ever-evolving, and borrowers’ needs are as numerous as they are unique,” Purvis notes. “Staying on top of current requirements while trying to manage a portfolio that has a lot of loans originating under different sets of rules is probably the hardest part of what I do.”

At the end of the day, however, Purvis takes great satisfaction in arriving at an outcome that meets the needs of everyone involved. “I feel the most accomplished when I’m able to look at all the complex issues I’ve solved along with my team and also see all the jobs we’re helping small business owners create by virtue of the funding we provide. “Knowing I had a direct hand in the impact it plays in my community is huge.”

“I’ve also had several mentors ‘pay it forward’ for me, which is why I’ve gotten actively involved in the SLU Alumni Association,” he goes on. “Helping provide information and resources to the many alumni of Southeastern is a big deal to me, whether it’s professional, career, or business advice.”

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT HELPING YOUR CLIENTS?

After a personal health scare, I realized how important heart health is. I actively support the American Heart Association Northshore Heart Walk where I have served as co-chair for the past two years. I recently became involved with Women United, a leadership group of the United Way of Southeast Louisiana. As a woman in a male dominated industry, I am always looking to join leadership groups that support women.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

ANNETTEDOWDLE CCWC,

I love lessening the burden for business owners and HR staff, but also helping employees get the right kind of coverage and understand their benefits.

I get to meet and interact with business owners to learn about their businesses and challenges when it comes to employee benefits and how I can help them. It is wonderful meeting with companies in the community and learning more about their business.

In the past few years, employee benefits have changed drastically to accommodate a more digital world. Our goal is not only to create and drive a long-term strategy that allows businesses to offer competitive benefits and control costs, but to join their vision and be an extension of their team.

As one of the largest brokers in the United States, HUB International’s resources and consulting options include voluntary benefits; data analytics; health; performance; program design; implementation; and much more. My team of benefit specialists, known as the ‘A-Team,’ can help with traditional benefits such as medical insurance, to modern benefits like pet insurance.

RHU,

It is crazy to think when I began my career in employee benefits that I was a team of one. I would tell the younger me that the hard work will pay off and I would soon have a team of over 15 who are rock stars at their jobs.

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE FOR YOUR CLIENTS?

Unfortunately, finance is not a required subject taught in middle schools and high schools. Having an understanding of money and how it works, is one of the most important things you can teach a child and some adults. Our job as financial advisors are to help our clientele with the planning aspect of their finances, their asset management, as well as their defensive planning for them and their families. Our role is to provide our clients with all the resources they need so they can have a successful outcome.

My business is focused on providing a superior level of highly professional advice to our clients as well as providing excellent, personalized service. We meet frequently with our clients to reassess their financial goals and objectives and to review their financial programs.

I specialize in helping business owners and HR departments with their retirement plans- educating them and aiding in helping them with creative solutions that enable informed decisions to be made. I think of myself as more of a consultant with a 3rd party perspective that I believe you will find both honest and trustworthy. While retirement plans and investment products are my concentration, I also believe in looking at your big financial picture and taking a holistic approach to help you protect your future and fulfill your financial goals. I have a highly skilled and well credentialed network of specialists and support staff that excel in life & disability income insurance, annuities, long-term care insurance, group employee benefits and estate planning.

I’ve always advised our clients that it’s their money, not ours. Our job is to provide them with prudent investment advice based on their goals, time horizons, and risk tolerance. Being able to see someone we’ve worked with for 8-10 years get to the point where their financial plan is in place, and they can look retirement in the eye, is very rewarding.

Over the years, we have had the pleasure to watch first hand how our services help not only our clients, but the generations that follow them. Being able to help one of our clients grandchildren the same way we helped them simply warms our hearts.

Well this is an easy question - my dad. My dad has been a Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch since before I was born. It wasn't until I was a senior in high school that we discussed the possibility of me joining the “family business”. Upon graduation, I began an internship. 12 years later, I am a Senior Financial Advisor.

I focus mainly on residential mortgage lending. However, with this main focus comes other things such as budgeting, working on credit repair, and also being a mentor and friend throughout the process. I help clients determine what mortgage payment will fit into their budget and not over extend them. When I have new buyers who have never gone through the home buying process before, I make them feel comfortable about the process and let them know it is ok to ask me questions! I want them to feel like they are a friend, not just a client. I pride myself in always being available.

WHO INFLUENCED YOU EARLY IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND HOW DID THEY INFLUENCE YOU?

My branch manager Bill Walker was probably the most impactful person when I started in mortgage lending. He was the first person I ever worked for in this industry and I still work with him today! He saw potential in me and knew that I would be successful. I appreciate that since I came from a completely different career as I was formerly in Hotel Sales at Hyatt Regency New Orleans. Bill has over 30 years experience in the real estate industry, and his knowledge and passion is unmatched. He always helps to find a way to make loans work out even in the most difficult situations. Bill remains calm in every situation and I admire the way he treats every single person that walks through in need of a home loan.

Buying a home is typically one of the most exciting things you may experience in your lifetime. I am thrilled to be able to be part of that experience over and over again! Sometimes people may think they are unable to be homeowners due to circumstances they are in, but when I help them reach their goal it is one of the most rewarding feelings ever! I love that my buyers keep in touch - send me photos of projects they have finished in the home, send me family members and friends that need help, it is just the most fulfilling job. It is honestly my dream job!

Exciting. Ever Changing. Dynamic. Mortgage lending is always exciting because each and every situation is different.

You don’t have to have everything figured out! When I got out of college I thought I needed to know exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It was in an effort to make this possible—to provide those individuals within the community of St. Tammany Parish with developmental delays the tools and means they need to live the best possible lives—that Laura and Gerald Delaup founded STARC of Louisiana in 1972. But, as with most projects of this kind, there was a passion driving it—a very important why behind its creation.

With a mission of providing a lifetime of (S)ervices, (T)raining, (A)dvocacy, (R)esources and (C)ommunity connections for individuals with intellectual and developmental “disABILITIES” throughout St. Tammany and the Florida parishes, organizations like STARC are incredibly important. “What we do is vital to both individuals and families,” says Jones. “We provide quality community programs and services, and those services allow families to work and deal with their own daily needs. Families are also assured that services are here for a lifetime for their loved one, which alleviates a great deal of financial and emotional stress.”

Programs include Mardi Gras bead recycling, job training for communitybased work that prepares individuals with the skills necessary to perform work in small group settings under the direct supervision and support of a work crew supervisor or to work independently, the STARC mobile work crew which performs jobs in a variety of locations and settings among typical coworkers under the supervision of work crew supervisors, and training to independently perform work in a competitive environment in

More than 56 percent of STARC’s funding comes from Medicaid. Other sources of funding include Louisiana Rehabilitation, Florida Parishes Human Services Authority, United Way, private contracts and the St. Tammany Parish government. Fundraising also remains a critical need as state and federal funding does not fully cover the costs of programs, and the needs of the organization and the individuals it serves only continue to grow.

a community setting. STARC’s Better Way Services (BWS) provides job opportunities for individuals to work in the community or in an activitybased environment, offering various professional services and retail items to the community. Additionally, support services and waivers are provided throughout life, starting as early as birth, to provide individuals with their social, environmental and financial needs and prepare them with the skills, training and assistance they need on a daily basis.

Over the lifetime of the organization, STARC of Louisiana has touched over 10,000 individuals, working with more than 700 individuals with developmental delays throughout many programs on an annual basis.

Naturally, with the work that they do, there are hurdles to overcome, not the least of which is the recruitment and retention of direct care staff. “Competition from non-industry employers has made hiring a significant challenge,” says Jones. “To meet this challenge, STARC has implemented several hiring incentives such as rate increases, hiring bonuses and shift incentives.”

“We are incredibly proud of the inroads we’ve made and the difference we’ve created in the lives of the people we work with,” says Jones. “We are helping thousands of individuals and continue to connect the ability that lies behind the disability of each individual served. Additionally, STARC provides a lifetime of services beginning at birth to those aging in place. Even in the midst of COVID, STARC continued to provide services to individuals including 24-hour residential services, in home supports, and supported employment. Like many organizations, STARC of Louisiana quickly operated in crisis mode, dealing with positive cases, closing of offices and day programs. Dealing with health protocol mandates and ever-changing requirements was challenging. It also greatly impacted the mental health of our residents, having to be quarantined and confined to their home for an extended period and unable to go to their job or day program. Fortunately, we came through it all.”

As these needs increase, however, STARC of Louisiana will rise to meet them, giving its life changing support to individuals who are invaluable to the community, whose abilities shine bright under the light that they are given.

The word “sprawling” is somewhat of an understatement when it comes to the home that Matt and Michelle Bowers share in Mandeville, a masterpiece of transitional architecture boasting 8500 square feet of living spaces and 3500 square footage of garage and porch space. Comprising twenty-one rooms in total, there is no shortage of room for the Bowers and their two teenaged boys, including five bedrooms and five and a half baths in the home’s two levels—plus a carriage house.

urrounded by an immaculately manicured and beautifully landscaped property, the home claims the perfect setting, offering a storybook feel of enchantment and charm. With its white painted brick exterior, multitudinous windows, and tin roof with exposed oak beam bracketing, the expansive home paints a magnificent picture of design. The interior is, naturally, every bit as impressive, with high, vaulted ceilings offset with dark-stained oak detailing that brings a cohesion to the home, echoing the oak flooring that runs throughout.

As minimalistic as it is in décor, it is this architectural detail that gives this home its remarkableness. A beautifully orchestrated collaboration of well-known Floridian architect, Geoff Chick of Geoff Chick & Associates, builder, Harrison Construction and interior designer, Erin Schaumburg, there’s an incredible openness to the home, a blend of wood and metal and stone that is chic and modern without being cold. Quite the contrary, as the natural elements bring a warmth to the spaces that is intensified by so much natural light and the many unique light fixtures thoughtfully placed throughout its many rooms.

“Our home is very quiet and has a peaceful and relaxing vibe,” observes Michelle, a real estate agent with Rutter Realty. Matt, meanwhile, owns several car dealerships in addition to being a real estate developer. “We chose the location because it’s close to schools and convenient to all of Matt’s dealerships.”

The location is undeniably ideal for this massive home, allowing for the main structure as well as the carriage house and a pool nestled between the two, a glittering oasis just off a covered porch that is perfectly designed for entertaining. Naturally, with its various seating areas and outdoor fireplace, the back patio and screened porch are among the Bowers’ favorite places to spend time.

The main kitchen is, naturally, even more of a showpiece, with a massive center island that stretches the length of the vast space, boasting dark wooden cabinetry that contrasts beautifully against the white perimeter cabinets. White marble countertops connect the two, and a backsplash of square white tiles adds texture to the design, with a brushed brass and stainless-steel finish on the hood vent that introduces a little bit of glamour, along with pendant lamps suspended above the island.

The “dirty kitchen” is another well-loved and oft-used space of the home, boasting dark grey custom cabinetry, marble countertops and a Wolf gas range, all nestled into a galley space that feels incredibly open due to a bank of windows that spill light into the room. Open shelving is set into the back wall, offset against counter-to-ceiling marble tile backsplash.

Naturally, the master suite is worthy of an architectural and interior design spread in a glossy editorial, with bespoke wallpaper on a feature wall behind the bed, a massive four-poster affair that draws the eye upward to soaring ceilings that peak to exposed wooden beams. Floor to ceiling windows give the room light on two sides, and the ensuite bath is a lavish study in marble featuring a freestanding tub, walk-in shower, and his and hers vanities at opposite sides of the room. Off the bath is a massive closet space and a tiny kitchenette space with all the necessary accoutrements for morning coffee or a midnight snack. “Our master bedroom is comfy and cozy, and it’s the perfect space to relax and escape the stresses of the day,” says Michelle.

rowing up with a father who owned several McDonald’s locations as a franchisee, Jennifer Bodin saw what the entrepreneurial spirit, coupled with drive and a strong work ethic, could accomplish. Boasting a background in graphic design and marketing as well as the health and fitness industry, the former NFL cheerleader for the Saints tapped into that inherent ambition to open the first Pure Barre franchise in the state and expanded to three locations. She owned and operated those studios for close to eight years, loving every moment of her work, until she sold a few years ago to become a stay-at-home mom for a few years as her young children grow. “I learned so much about business from my father and had the best teacher and role model,” says Bodin. “Even though I’m staying home during this busy phase of our life, I know there will be another business venture in my near future because entrepreneurship is in my blood.”

her hands full with her kids’ activities and her community involvement. “I don’t think a mom’s ‘work’ is ever done,” she says. “The mental load of a mom, working or not, is a lot. When I ran my own businesses, there were pros and cons. I loved what I did, and it was very rewarding; but there were times I missed out on milestones or had to work during holidays. The work/life balance is always a struggle, especially when ‘mom guilt’ creeps in. Still, I’m proud of what I created, and I hope it inspires my kids to chase their dreams.”

Married to her husband Ryan for nine years, Bodin is the mother of three beautiful children: six-year-old Owen, four-year-old Gray, and three-year-old Reese. Despite the fact that she may not clock in at a traditional job, Bodin has

As a businesswoman, Bodin learned some important lessons that translate in all areas of life. “I learned that you can inspire people by being authentic,” she says. “Invest in people and follow your gut. It’s always a good idea in business—and in life—to seek counsel from someone you trust. It’s also okay to take time to think about things before responding.”

In her professional life, Bodin has a great deal to be proud of, and she’s happy to be able to share those accomplishments with her girls and show them that anything is possible. “It was a big moment in my life to be a professional

cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints during our first Super Bowl victory,” she recalls. “In my opinion, it was the first moment that unified the city after Hurricane Katrina, and it was very special to be a part of that. I will never forget it! This experience was so much greater than me, changed my life perspective and led me to where I am today. Later, owning Pure Barre was empowering because it was a workout and franchise started by a woman, for women, women-owned, and employed all women. I employed over 100 women when I owned my studios. I never felt that because I was a woman, I couldn’t do anything. That probably comes from the confidence my dad instilled in me, and I hope my two daughters will feel the same one day. They can do anything. It doesn’t matter that they’re female. From both of these experiences, I hope to show all of my kids that possibilities are endless when you work for it and stay true to yourself.”

When they’re older, Bodin hopes her children remember the most important things of all: “I want them to remember they have always been loved and cared for, that they can confide in me and that I’ll always be their soft place to land,” she says. “I hope they know that I took my time to appreciate their individual characteristics, understand their feelings, teach them emotional maturity and how to handle conflict. Bacon is their favorite. And whenever we go to the beach, we always try to find ‘cone’ shells because they know they’re my favorite. We’re seven years in to filling up a huge jar and still have a long way to go. Then there’s Christmas, which is almost a month-long celebration in our house. I try to make this such a special and cozy month for our family. I hope they continue to do this with their families one day.” LN Hughes Funeral Services, a difficult time easier.

I am an abstract expressionist artist and a native of Louisiana that has always loved nature and been inspired by the colors and textures in the world around me. My artwork incorporates texture and layering of soft, muted colors infused with a sense of elegance, peace and serenity.

My love for Art History, textiles, and fashion gives some influence, but my main inspiration comes from past years as a graphic designer and a love of the textures found in nature. I often see complex line composition and intricate shape patterns on objects in the world around me that find their way onto my canvas in new and different ways. I feel keen observation, spontaneity, and intuition are key factors to my creative process but my art education in graphic design and inclusion of the elements of art are always prevalent in each piece.

“I cannot stress enough that being proactive rather than reactive is key,” shares Crystal. “These statistics are part of the reason we see inflated prices in necessities such as medical and vehicle insurance. With proactive attention, education, services, resources, and support, we can significantly decrease these preventable injuries and deaths.”

“One of my favorite aspects of this job is programming directly to the kids! It is both magical and exhausting. We give every ounce of energy we have just to see them smile, engaged, confident and ultimately safe!” shares Crystal.

nspiration comes in many forms and fashions. A lot of times, inspiration is situational. You may experience highs and lows in your life that lead you to advocate for something you’ve never advocated for before. That’s exactly what happened to Slidell native, Crystal Pichon, twelve and a half years ago in Baton Rouge when she met injury lawyer, Lexlee Overton. Together, they built the nonprofit child injury prevention program, The Safety Place.

The Safety Place has a mission to lean in and provide injury prevention education, services, and resources to caregivers and parents using a unique and non-judgmental approach.

Crystal believes that giving children a future starts with you. What better way to pour into society than ensuring future generations are safe and cared for? It starts with educating yourself and equipping those willing to help with the tools they need to keep our kids safe.

“No one can know everything. Why not lean on child safety experts to help keep the best things you’ve ever done (your kids) as safe as possible?” asks Crystal. “Not knowing the safest option does not make you less of a parent. It makes you human. And a professional pointing out a safer way to do something and offering assistance is not a judgment on your ability to parent. With me and my team, it’s a pure and honest effort to help you protect your children and leave you feeling empowered.”

Crystal says the statistics of child injury are alarming. Research shows unintentional injuries are the #1 cause of death for children. Ages 0-1 are unintentional suffocations, ages 1-4 are drownings, and ages 5-9 are motor vehicle crashes. Suicide recently became number 1 for ages 10-14, and 15- young adult age is also motor vehicle crashes.

hen Marllie Harrison and Cody Addison met in October of 2017 through mutual friends, the two had an obvious spark, and it didn’t take long before the two were dating—and then unexpectedly gifted with a baby. But as quickly as their relationship became serious, they took their time building a solid foundation of love that would last. Then one day, three years later, Cody did something else unexpected. “I thought I was going to a family photoshoot with my mom, Cody and our daughter, and the photographer told me she always made couples do this crazy thing to get a good shot, so I went along with it,” recalls Marllie, who works as a nurse for Weiler Plastic Surgery, while Cody is an operator at Exxon Mobil chemical plant. “She gave Cody and I each a chalkboard and put our backs facing each other and told us to write one word that described the other person. On the count of three, we would turn around to see what was written on the other’s board. When I turned around, Cody was on one knee! I never saw it coming because he always expressed to me how long it would be until we got married! Of course, the tears started rolling!”

Story by Liesel Schmidt Photos by Yehleen Photography

Just over a year later, more tears were rolling as Marllie walked down the aisle at The Greenery at Liuzza Land wearing an elegant all lace gown with nude underlay to meet Cody at the altar. With their guests and their 20 attendants looking on, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married—though getting there wasn’t quite as straight-forward as planned. “My maid of honor ripped her dress and started crying a few minutes before we walked down the aisle,” Marllie laughs. “Fortunately, we got her all sewed up seconds before, and no one could tell!”

I always get compliments when people see pictures!”

Now back home in Ponchatoula, the Addisons are looking forward to a future of love…and all the unexpected happiness that comes with it, including a new baby boy.

After adjourning to their on-site reception, the happy couple joined their guests for a buffet-style dinner that included chicken alfredo pasta and pulled pork sliders. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the venue, the day was a stunning celebration of love, in every moment. “The venue made our wedding feel extremely special and unique,” says Marllie. “I hardly had to buy any decorations because of all the greenery and plants that were already part of it.
