Greetings

from the Editor Ngā mihi mahana - Warmest greetings As I write this, the District is in ‘recovery’ from the flood events that turned our braided rivers and empty stream beds into raging torrents. For most of us, the events were a slight and very temporary inconvenience - finding out we should have replaced the wiper blades, getting soaked bringing in wet firewood, dodging deep puddles on the footpaths. However for those suffering from land or property damage, ‘recovery’ is a long and arduous process. We are so grateful for the many government agencies and volunteer groups that leapt into action to relocate livestock, arrange feed and help with cleanup. We’re also grateful for our Civil Defence volunteers and staff who sometimes work through the night to prevent further damage and keep people safe. Coincidentally, this week is Volunteer Week - an opportunity to acknowledge the volunteers who, in many ways, keep our communities running, and to highlight the value of volunteering as a means to connect with others, develop skills and experience and improve general wellbeing. Helping others takes us out of ourselves and gives a sense of being part of something meaningful!

Unfortunately, many of our volunteerinvolving organisations are suffering from a drop in numbers. Volunteers are getting older and people say they have no time. Interestingly though, volunteering can take as little as an hour a week, volunteering to support a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters, or, once a fortnight, painting nails to brighten the day of women affected by chronic illness and/or disability. If you like getting into the outdoors, there’s Civil Defence, Search and Rescue or helping with Riding for the DisabIed. Volunteering can be as little or as much as we make it. Check out the Council website for ideas: https://www.waimakariri.govt.nz Search ‘Volunteering.’ “Ma tini ma mano ka rapa te whai Many hands make light work. Unity is Strength.”

Ben Eldridge

Assistant Librarian My name is Ben Eldridge and I have just recently started at Waimakariri District Council as an Assistant Librarian in the Reader & Reference services team. For the past 5 years I have been working in high school libraries and prior to that I worked for Auckland City Libraries for 5 years. In between my stints as a librarian I have worked in made to measure suiting, worked as a freelance journalist and photographer for The Press, and completed a Bachelor of Musical Arts majoring in jazz performance on guitar. I perform around Christchurch quite often with a variety of different groups and have played in the pit bands for musicals such as Cinderella, Legally Blonde and Mama Mia. I have a long association with North Canterbury having lived in both Rangiora and Broomfield when I was younger. I now reside in Christchurch with my wife, our two teenage children, two cats and one dog. I am excited to be once again working in public libraries and feel very lucky to be working amongst a supremely talented and empathetic bunch of people.

6 Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park Tūhaitara Coastal Park is a wonderful fusion of nature and culture. Cultural values underpin the 200-year vision for the park and all of the environmental conservation work we are doing to rehabilitate the indigenous coastal wetlands. Over the past month we have hosted lots of school groups who have enjoyed visiting and learning about the cultural and ecological significance of the site, especially Tūtaepatu Lagoon. A recent visit from Rangiora Borough School was a great example of connections between nature and culture in action. The school visited the park’s Pā Harakeke with a local weaver who showed the tamariki the correct way to harvest the mature outer leaves for weaving, whilst ensuring that the young inner leaves were left untouched and able to grow strong. This month also sees the start of our Matariki celebrations with the first of two night walks happening on Wednesday 30 June. A second walk is planned for Wednesday 7 July – see below for booking details. The walks will include storytelling and participatory poetry making inspired by, yes you guessed it, nature and culture. The reappearance of the Matariki star cluster in the night sky is such an important time in the Māori calendar and it is the inspiration behind our latest environmental project, which we will be launching during the night walks. Come along to find out more! Visit our website to find out more about the coastal park and Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust: www.tuhaitarapark.org.nz; or follow us on Facebook at Friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the people organising fundraising events for the Cancer Society, whether it is our awesome support groups across North Canterbury or the Cancer Society being chosen as the Charity of Choice at an event. Recently we had the Oxford Support Group organising the Port Hillbillies show in conjunction with the Oxford Community Trust and raising funds for both these wonderful groups. It was a fantastic evening with over 170 people entertained in Bluegrass, Oldtimey, Americana music. On the same day, the North Canterbury Athletic Club hosted the Andrew Reese Memorial Relay Run at the Ashley Picnic Grounds. It was the first year the event was hosted by the NCAC and what a day with over 70 teams entered. Thank you for turning up, participating and supporting the Cancer Society. On Saturday 19 June the Ashley Rugby Club and Rangiora Showcase Jewellers host “Cheers to the Ladies”. A fantastic day out for the ladies, goodie bag on arrival, guest speakers, tastings, raffles, auctions, mini fete atmosphere. If you have an event that you would like the Cancer Society to be your “Charity of Choice”, please do not hesitate to contact Tiff at tiffany.wafer@cancercwc.org.nz or on 021 139 4909. “You Can For Cancer” is where you can create a fundraiser that is right for you, check out https://www.youcanforcancer.org.nz/ for more information on how you can raise funds and support the Cancer Society. Ideas such as Chop the mop, Push your limits, Sell up a storm, Kick the habit. Daffodil Day is coming, our annual street appeal is on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 August. 11 Abbeyfield House for Waimakariri Loneliness and social isolation are huge factors for older people living alone. Abbeyfield offers companionship and peace of mind for older people looking for a place to live that’s warm and welcoming and feels like home. At an Abbeyfield house residents can enjoy the company of others and retain their independence. Residents are accepted based on need and suitability; potential residents are invited to stay for up to 2 weeks to ensure a good fit. A group of nine local people have been meeting to discuss the possibility of having an Abbeyfield house in Waimakariri and applied to the Abbeyfield New Zealand board to set up a formal Steering Group. This has been approved and they are now Abbeyfield Waimakariri Steering Group. Steering group status enables the group to work together under the Abbeyfield name towards establishing a house in the district. Valda Reveley from Rangiora has experience with Abbeyfield and will Chair the Steering Group. Abbeyfield New Zealand Inc. is a volunteer run charity committed to providing supported independent living for older New Zealanders. There is a network of 14 houses throughout New Zealand, including two in Christchurch and one in Selwyn. Each is a family-style home, located close to local amenities. Each house has about 12-14 residents. Residents have their own studio unit with ensuite and sometimes a patio. There are shared areas and facilities including dining, lounge, laundry, gardens.

A housekeeper/cook is employed to provide two cooked meals a day and a selfservice breakfast, keep communal areas clean and tidy and provide general support for residents. Abbeyfield free up private and public sector housing for other users and contribute to the overall improvement in housing supply. At current turnover numbers, over 750 dwellings could be freed up over 15 years. As the Steering Group celebrate their beginning in Waimakariri members are looking for land ideas, either to purchase, rent or collaborate with owners. They start with a nil budget and would welcome fundraising ideas. They are willing to speak at group meetings to discuss possibilities. Contact Valda Reveley on phone 027 2719961 if you would like to know more or be involved. More information can be found at www.abbeyfield.org.nz

Winter top tips • Draw curtains first thing in the morning to get free heat from the sun, and close them at dusk to trap the heat in. • Wipe condensation off windows every morning. If you leave it, the moisture will re-evaporate into the air, making your home damp and harder to heat. • Ventilate daily by opening windows on opposite sides of the house for at least 10 minutes, even in winter. • Assess your heating - in a very draughty house, radiant heat (bar heaters, log burners) will keep you warmer than convection heat (fan heater, oil column heater). Call CEA for advice on how to best heat your home using the resources you've got. • If you use a dehumidifier, turn your heater on at the same time - warm air is easier to extract than cold air. • If using a log burner, only use dry firewood.

• Hot water can account for up to 30% of your power bill. Use cold water for washing clothes and rinsing dishes, and make it a rule to have shorter showers in the winter months. • Keep a gap between furniture and external walls to prevent mould from growing • Use a double door sausage, that moves with the door, on doors between heated and unheated parts of the house. • Reduce condensation and dampness by keeping the doors to bathroom, kitchen and laundry shut. • Unflued gas heaters can emit up to 1 litre of moisture every hour, causing dampness in your home. They are expensive to run, and can release dangerous gases. Only use them in an emergency. Phone: 0800 438 9276 (0800 GETWARM) Email: info@cea.co.nz

One of the aims of Citizens Advice Bureau is to help people find the community services they need. We can’t achieve this without good quality information, and this includes us knowing about local services and community organisations. We have a whole section of our website dedicated to this, and we call it the Community Directory. To make this the best service we can to our community, we’d like to make sure we list as many providers, organisations and clubs as possible. You can check our database to see if you are listed by going to our website www.cab.org.nz From the menu choose Community Directory and type in the name of your provider, organisation or club. Training the people who work with young people;

Undertaking and disseminating research and evaluation so that training and services can be based on evidence;

Loneliness and Connection Tuesday 6 July 9.30am—11.30am

Loneliness is a challenging emotional response or state—Humans are social/communal creatures, for the most part. What is loneliness? Loneliness is the feeling of disconnection from others. We can experience loneliness in families, in marriages, in other relationships, whether we have a successful career or if we are alone. However, being alone is not the same as being lonely. Why is long term loneliness challenging? What can we do about it? How can we model connection for our youth? What strategies can they adapt and adopt into their daily lives for more meaningful connections?

Informing and influencing policy and practice.

Anxiety in the Teen/Tween Years Thursday 4 November 9.30am—11.30am

With a focus on the significant adults in young peoples lives, this workshop aims to provide a basic understanding of anxiety and how in particular it relates to the tween/teen years. Those who attend will hopefully grow in both confidence and competence in supporting their young person to be brave in the face of anxiety so that the impact is lessened and their wellbeing is enhanced.

New Zealand Red Cross National Youth Engagement Strategy The voices of young people Presented by Fi Sawers, Youth Activator, New Zealand Red Cross

New Zealand Red Cross underwent 18 months of a discovery phase, listening to young people, and key stakeholders to understand where the gaps were and what are some of the current needs for young people (within the scope of work – humanitarian work). From this, the youth engagement strategy was written for New Zealand Red Cross for the next ten years. Fiona Sawers will share with you why this was done, how they went about it, and the youth engagement strategy which will bring to light some of these findings. A separate research paper is available for all as a koha to the sector that contains all the findings, which New Zealand Red Cross hopes will be useful.
