Greetings

from the Editor Tau Hou hari - Happy New Year By now you will have shaken off the back to work blues, ditched unattainable New Year’s resolutions and be getting your teeth into your 2021 work year. I’ve just reviewed what’s lined up for the Community Team over the coming two to three months. It’s quite a long list; and that’s reflective of the passionate and engaged community that we live in. - No issue or opportunity goes unconsidered! Pretty incredible really! In a vibrant District like ours, summer provides a raft of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Our bike trails, rivers, beaches and walking tracks are wonderful, notwithstanding the beautiful parks that are dotted around our towns and neighborhoods. With the hot days and long evenings, there’s little excuse to not get in amongst all of that; and it ticks off four of the Mental Health Foundation’s ‘Five Winning Ways to Wellbeing’: - ‘Be Active’,’Take Notice’ and ‘Learn’ from being inquisitive about what you see around you, and ‘Connect’ to enjoy the company of others. Of course it’s not that easy for everyone. Even summer has its highs and lows!

The mental health foundation website is a good source of information if you, or someone around you, isn’t coping too well. Ask the question: “Are you okay?”. It’s so important to keep an eye out for people when things aren’t going well. Looking out for others is what builds great communities. The Team are kicking off the year with a series of Neighbourhood BBQs, in local parks. These include old fashioned picnic games and it is also an opportunity to meet someone new. Alongside these, we encourage people to arrange their own neighbourhood catch-up. The Community Events/BBQ Trailer is free to hire, through the Community Team. It’s a great resource to centre a small event around. Of course there are heaps of larger events on over the coming months too, and the gardens are flourishing. Enjoy! Kia pai te raumati! Have a great summer!

Youth Update Sam Redman There are plenty of things happening in the world of youth at the start of 2021. Our youth action groups have been hard at work planning and preparing for the next year, and the WaiYouth events team have decided they want to start this new year off with a bang. With this in mind, their Summer Festival event, taking place on 13 February, will be an afternoon of fun and entertainment for all. Kicking off with a Skate Competition at 12pm, followed by a Talent Show for young people to showcase their skills in front of a live audience, and finishing up with a family-friendly outdoor movie. The team are looking forward to a super fun event and a year to match. You can check out their upcoming events at their new website www.waiyouth.nz The Waimakariri Youth Council have just had their first meeting of the year at the end of January, and are keen to get stuck into recruitment for some new members in February. At the same time, the CDEM Civil Defence Cadet group are looking forward to their first training of the year at the start of this month. With summer holidays finishing up for many young people in the near future, youth across the District will be looking forward to school starting back - or perhaps dreading it? Either way, there’s a lot to think about, a lot to prepare for, and often a lot to worry about. So today could be a good day to smile at a young person, give them some encouraging words, or just be there to support them. Ngā mihi,

Sam

Community Networking Forum 2021 The first Community Networking Forum for the year is on Thursday 18 February 12pm-1pm at Dudley Park Pavilion, 45 Church Street, Rangiora. Contact Rachel Thornton: rachel.thornton@wmk.govt.nz or phone 0800 965 468. A full schedule will follow, in the March edition of Chatter.

An Invitation to Carers A carer often carries the burden of looking after someone without the opportunity or support to look after their own health and well being. It can be a lonely and a difficult role as we put all of our energy into the people we care for.

In conjunction with Waitaha Primary Health, the Person 2 Person Help Trust would like to lessen the load, inviting all carers to a regular cuppa and chat at Rivertown Café, Thursday fortnightly starting 28 January from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Mainly Music Mainly Music Kaiapoi will resume on Wednesday 10 February at 10am in the St Bartholomew Church Hall 23 Cass Street Kaiapoi. Mainly music is a music and movement group for children between the ages of 0-5 years. Morning tea, chatter and play follow the music session. Cost per session is $3.00 per family. For more details contact Margaret 03 327 6404.

For more information contact Audrey Dragovich Ph 022 308 1618 or Sarah Saunders Ph 021 849 950 sarah.saunders@waitaha.primary.health.nz We’re here. Free call or text 1737 any time, 24 hours a day. You’ll get to talk to (or text with) a trained counsellor. Our service is completely free. Are you feeling anxious or just need someone to talk to? Call or text 1737. Are you feeling down or a bit overwhelmed? Call or text 1737. Whatever it is, we’re here. Free call or text 1737 anytime.

6 New fast and direct bus services from the Park & Ride sites in Rangiora and Kaiapoi If you’re thinking about giving the bus a go this year, it’s a great time to hop onboard! The new services The 91 Rangiora – City direct and 92 Kaiapoi – City direct will run Monday to Friday and will each have four morning trips to the central city, and five afternoon trips back to each town. Timetables are available now at www.metro.co.nz They will pick up and drop off at Park & Ride locations in each town (three in Rangiora and two in Kaiapoi), and at key hubs within the central city, with no stopping along the way. The buses will use the new T2 lanes on the Christchurch Northern Motorway, and the dedicated bus lanes on Cranford Street, but can use other routes depending on traffic. T2 lanes can be used by vehicles with two or more people in them, as well as buses and motorcycles. Learn more at www.nzta. govt.nz/letsride Jump the traffic queues, gain some ‘me time’, reduce emissions, save on petrol and parking, and make the most of the free WiFi onboard the new services.

7 Age Friendly Update Kia ora Koutou Nga mihi o te Tau Hou. Happy New Year. It’s back to work for many. Some of my best childhood memories are of the summer holidays we had. My father was a builder/joiner and built us one of the first caravans with a curved front. Mum baked for days before we left and preparations took weeks. We toured all over the South Island until we children got sick of that and demanded we stay in one place so we could meet people and do things together. Social connection is one of the aspects of our Waimakariri Age-friendly Plan. Madeleine, our Facilitator, sent a link to a Radio NZ programme about living well into our 90s in which social connection is seen as a huge factor: https://www.rnz.co.nz/ national/programmes/sunday/ audio/2018774880/the-secret-to-livingto-well-into-your-90s-or-older On the Community page in our local papers is a list of dates for Neighbourhood Barbeques. These sound like fun and a way to meet people living near us. What a super initiative by our Council Community Team. A family near us invited us to visit them while on holiday on Banks Peninsular and we had a wonderful day with them and another family who were also visiting. We took our daughter and her 13 year old son with us. Our daughter is a widow so it was great for her to meet other parents of teenagers and her son to get some good role modelling of being with a functional nuclear family. It was also good for us “older folk” to be part of that.

Two of our three children with adult families live in NZ. We are the fortunate ones. There must be many who live abroad and have no idea when they will meet again, if ever. Waimakariri has a high proportion of older people. It is a great, friendly place to live. The Office for Seniors defines an Agefriendly community as a place where you can stay connected, healthy, active and respected, whatever your age. Let’s spend the summer out and about meeting people, making new friends. Haere ora Haere pai Go with wellness, go with care Joanne Gumbrell Chair, Waimakariri Age-friendly Advisory Group

CEA Charitable Trust and its Curtain Bank are on the move! CEA including its Curtain Bank have moved premises. CEA is now based at 16 Leslie Hills Dr in Riccarton (open now) while the Curtain Bank is housed separately at 55 Ferry Rd in the CBD, re-opening there later in January. What hasn’t changed are the services the charitable trust is providing. Free insulation for homeowners with a CSC and those living at an eligible address is still available, as are recycled curtains and free energy advice. Winter may seem a long time off and keep warm measures may not seem so urgent. However, CEA can get long waitlists in winter. Already they are making insulation appointments for March now! Homeowners without a CSC as well as landlords can also get insulation from CEA but at a cost. Surpluses from unsubsidised insulation assist the charitable side of the trust. So anyone buying unsubsidised insulation is not just keeping their own house warm but is supporting projects that keep those less fortunate warmer. Landlords need to be aware that new insulation standards apply for new and renewed rental contracts from 1 July this year. Where previously old (lower) insulation standards were acceptable, all rentals will soon need to be upgraded to the new standard. For more information contact CEA at info@cea.co.nz or phone 0800 GETWARM or visit www.cea.co.nz

Supporting Young People’s Positive Development and Wellbeing : A Resource Building Workshop Tuesday 16 February 9.30am—11.30am

Wellbeing is often portrayed in media and policy as equating with Health, Wealth and Happiness. Yet, anyone who works with young people knows there is much more to being well, and it doesn't look the same from one young person to the next. In this workshop, we will share useful tools for supporting positive youth development in times of change and uncertainty, and what the psychology, economics, health sciences and education literature says about what it really means for young people to 'be well' today.

De escalation Thursday 25 February 9.30am —12.30pm

One of the most difficult parts of working with young people is when they become angry or aggressive. Many professionals encounter this behaviour on a regular basis but they are not sure about the underlying causes of this behaviour and how to effectively address it without making the situation worse.

Sowing and Growing the Seeds of Compassion and Kindness Tuesday 9 March 9.30am—11.30am

Research has found that compassion is a response that has ensured our survival. Putting compassion and kindness into action repeatedly with awareness, continues to ensure not only our basic biological survival, but it also optimises our physical and psychological wellbeing. How do compassion and kindness benefit us?
