Junior Sports Team of the Year Open to any team of primary school students that have achieved a high standard of participation in any sport.

Featherston Amateur Wrestling Club The Featherston Wrestling Club’s junior team continues to punch above their weight at national level. Wrestlers won 10 medals [six gold] at the 2019 NZ Club Champs, eight medals [three gold] at both the 2019 and 2020 National Championships. Another 15 medals [eight gold] were won at the 2019 North Island Champs, and five medals [four gold] at the 2019 South Island Championships. The team won the Best Sportsmanship Award at the 2019 national championships.

Masterton Intermediate School Baseball Team

MIS won the Wellington Region Intermediate Schools’ Baseball Cup in March 2021 with a dominant display in the tournament played at Fraser Park Lower Hutt. The team won all four games, scoring 43 runs and conceding only five. MIS started with a 12-1 win over Newlands Intermediate, followed by a 9-1 defeat of Naenae Intermediate, to qualify for the semifinal, where they beat Raroa Intermediate 12-0. In the final, they defeated Evans Bay Intermediate 10-3. The hallmark of the team was its versatility and teamwork, with five pitchers used and all 11 players making valuable contributions.

St Matthew’s Collegiate School Primary Cricket Team St Matthew’s won the Central Districts playoffs to qualify for the 2020 ANZ Shield national intermediate finals, which are contested by the winners of each major association’s playoffs. At the tournament, St Matthew’s came up against some very experienced teams from much bigger schools, who have played in the national finals on numerous occasions. St Matthew’s had one win and four losses, and finished sixth. The inexperienced team showed great enthusiasm and were rewarded for their sportsmanship with the Spirit of Cricket Award.

Wairarapa Cricket 2020 Year 8 Boys Team

They narrowly missed out on overall tournament honours at the annual Hawke’s Bay tournament in 2020 with four wins from five games. Almost unheard of for Wairarapa teams, they defeated some of the powerhouse teams in junior cricket – Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington Gold and Wellington Black. Their only slip-up came in their final match against Mt Maunganui. Wairarapa started the tournament with T20 wins over Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay. In the 50-over matches, Wairarapa beat Wellington Gold and Wellington Black, but lost to Mt Maunganui to finish runners-up.
