Dalefield Premier Men’s Hockey Team Dalefield won the 2019 and 2020 Hockey Wellington Premier Men’s Championships, their third and fourth titles in six years. In 2019, Dalefield beat defending champions Hutt United 2-1 in atrocious conditions. The win was all the more special, with player-coach Dane Lett away with the Black Sticks. Dalefield achieved their first unbeaten season in 2020, winning all 14 games, culminating in a 3-1 win over surprise finalists Harbour City. Dane Lett, Trent Lett, Jordan Cohen, and Benedict van Woerkom represented Central Falcons, who won the Premier Hockey League.
Dalefield Premier Women’s Hockey Team Dalefield won the 2020 Hockey Wellington Premier Women’s Championship beating fierce rivals Hutt United in a tense final, 1-0 in a shootout, after the scores were locked together at 2-2 at fulltime. Goalkeeper Amy Rossiter-Stead was the hero for Dalefield, saving all five of Hutt’s shootout attempts, while Katherine van Woerkom held her nerve and converted her attempt in the last play of the game. The championship was Dalefield’s first since 2017, and third in five years. Felicity Reidy played for the champion Central Falcons in the Premier Hockey League.
Masterton Golf Duncan Cup Team Masterton won the prestigious Duncan Cup for the first time in the club’s history in 2019, beating New Judgeford at Royal Wellington. Masterton dominated the morning foursomes 4-1, and won the singles 6-4 for a 10-5 victory. The team completed the double in 2020, convincingly beating Shandon 9-6 in very wet and windy conditions at Paraparaumu Beach. Again Masterton led 4-1 after the morning foursomes, and they wrapped up their second title, with two matches still on the course. The Duncan Cup is regarded by many as New Zealand’s toughest interclub competition to win.
Wairarapa Men’s Bowls Team Wairarapa belied their underdog status to win a bronze medal at the National Intercentre Championships in Wellington in March 2021. Wairarapa had never previously qualified for the top eight, but in the end came within a whisker of reaching the final. The team made the quarterfinals with wins over Nelson, Hawke’s Bay, Central Otago, and Kapiti Coast in pool play. In the quarters they defeated Manawatu. That set up a semifinal against Auckland and Wairarapa pushed their international-laden opponents all the way, only going down off the very last bowl.
