People’s Choice Award An award for Wairarapa residents to have a direct say as to what finalists they believe should be recognised for their contribution to local sport.
Wairarapa College 2019 Award Recipient
This award is awarded to the finalist with the most public votes. Wairarapa College has excelled in a wide variety of sports. Both boys’ and girls’ hockey teams played in the Wellington Secondary School Premier grades and in the highest-level national tournament – the Rankin Cup [boys], and the Federation Cup [girls]. The Wairarapa College first XV played in the Wellington Premier competition. Flanker Sam Smith was selected in the NZ Secondary School Barbarians side, making him one of the top 40 players in the country. In 2018, the boys’ football first XI won the Trident Trophy National Satellite tournament. Wairarapa College A are regular participants in the Netball Wairarapa Premier One championship, and in 2019 went on to make the final, losing a tight game to Harcourts. Para athletes Josh Taylor and Ben Taylor won gold medals in track and field events at the 2018 NZSS Athletics Championships. Wairarapa College students also represented New Zealand in power lifting, endurance equestrian, canoe polo and athletics. The school offers 26 different sports and has the most students taking part in sport.
