City awarded $400,000 for sediment remediation and water study
On February 23, NC
Governor Roy Cooper announced $462.9 million in funding for 249 infrastructure projects in 80 communities statewide that will strengthen North Carolina’s drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. As part of this funding, City of Kings Mountain was awarded $400,000 for a “Buffalo Creek & Moss Lake Sediment Remediation & Water Quality Study.”
Aging and failing water
systems are an obstacle for communities across North Carolina, preventing reliable access to clean drinking water and sewer services, and harming health, quality of life and economic development efforts. The state typically invests approximately $200 million per year upgrading systems, but thanks to federal funds from
the American Rescue Plan and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, North Carolina is investing $2.3 billion over two years supporting this critical infrastructure.
“Every single North Carolinian deserves clean drinking water, and aging water systems are a threat to the
health and economies of too many of our communities,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “Thanks to investments initiated by the Biden administration, we can make a once in a generation transformation in rebuilding water infrastructure for towns and counties throughout our state.”
“Investing in water infrastructure provides communities with reliable, affordable access to clean water and the opportunity for future economic
growth,” NC Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Elizabeth S. Biser said. “The amount of funding requested highlights the extensive need for infrastructure investment across North Carolina.”
Governor Cooper and Secretary Biser announced the new round of funding at the Lexington Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. During the announcement, they highlighted

YMCA soccer field lights upgraded to LEDs
On August 3, the Herald reported on upgrades coming to Kings Mountain Family YMCA. A big part of that upgrade is updating the lights on the YMCA’s athletic fields to LEDs. That work has begun, and the poles are being tested and replaced, if necessary, to ensure all are in good condition.
Because the lights are
already maintained by the city, they continue to be responsible for them. Some additional funds may be appropriated should poles need to be replaced as then Assistant City Manager Nick Hendricks pointed out, “These are already our responsibility-, so we will use our buying power to purchase what is necessary to get the lighting on the
fields right to better serve the needs of our community.”
City of Kings Mountain owns the YMCA facility and handles all the maintenance. Kings Mountain Family YMCA manages all the programs. The purpose of city partnering with the YMCA was to encourage citizens to live healthier lifestyles in a family cen-

Speaker Tim Moore in accident while on state business
Speaker Tim Moore, members of his security team, and state representative David Willis were involved in an automobile accident on Thursday night, February 23, around 9:43 p.m., while returning to Raleigh from Wilson, NC. No one in the vehicle was injured.
Moore held a press con-
ference on Friday morning, describing what happened and thanking his security team, specifically General Assembly Police Officer Jason Purdue who was driving the unmarked vehicle.
According to Moore, the driver of a Chevy S-10 pickup “came up behind us at a high rate of speed and rammed into the back of us” at least three times, maybe more, jolting the vehicle.

In February of 2021, Harrell also purchased Orchard Trace Kings Mountain, LLC, consisting of 70.58 acres for $1.2 million from Manuel and Rosemary Periera, and Alberto and Maria Castelo of Westbury, NY. A caveat in this deal is that the prior owners have an option to purchase the property back at $1.5M if they do so by March 1.
In June of 2022, Harrell then purchased 22.65 acres at the intersection of Phifer Road and Kings Mountain Blvd from the Ware family.

Blacksburg Meth trafficker gets 12+ years in federal prison
On Friday, February 24,
U.S. District Judge Frank D. Whitney sentenced Brandon Eugene Massey, 38, of Blacksburg, S.C., to 151 months in prison, for conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Judge Whitney also imposed five years of supervised release following incarceration.
According to filed documents and information introduced at the sentencing hearing, between 2019 and 2020, Massey was responsible for trafficking one and a half kilograms of methamphetamine, including 150 grams of ultra-high purity methamphetamine, that was seized from his co-conspira-
tors. Court documents show that Massey was responsible for supplying the methamphetamine to individuals who then distributed it in Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties and elsewhere. According to court records, prior to being sentenced, Massey fled from prosecution and was arrested in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation, which to date has led to the federal prosecution of more than 60 individuals for drug trafficking. Law enforcement have also seized more than 49 kilograms of methamphetamine, 29 kilograms of fentanyl, 27 kilograms of cocaine, 3.5 kilograms of heroin, 70 firearms, more than $385,000 in cash, and over $800,000 in other property.
OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles criminal organizations using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. Additional information about the OCDETF Program can be found at https://www.justice.gov/ ocdetf.
In making today’s announcement, U.S. Attorney King commended the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, the Gastonia Police Department, and the Huntersville Police Department for their coordination and investigation of the case.
Assistant United States Attorney Steven R. Kaufman, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte, prosecuted the case.

In most cases, scammers usually give a fake name and say they are with a particular law enforcement agency when calling potential victims. In this case, the scammer just said he was with “the police department.”
GPD reminds residents that legitimate law enforcement agencies will not call
individuals and demand or request money from community members for unpaid traffic citations, perceived arrest warrants, or in this case, perceived missed court dates. And they will not tell you that you can use prepaid cards, Bitcoin, or gift cards as a way of paying any fines.

PCA breaks ground on Joe’s Lake campus Phase II
Pinnacle Classical Academy (PCA) broke ground on the second phase of its grade 4-12 campus on Joe’s Lake Road on February 17.
Representatives of T.C. Strickland Construction, Holland & Hamrick Architects, and the USDA joined students, faculty, and members of the board of directors at the groundbreaking. Speakers included Dr. Shelly Shope (the school’s headmaster), Sen. Debbie Clary (chair of the board of directors), Sen. Wes Westmoreland (board vice chair and facilities chair), and Nicholas Lattanzi of the USDA. Emily Bridges and Lydia Canipe, the presidents of the junior and senior classes, led the recitation
of the Pledge of Allegiance and the School Pledge.
Although Pinnacle Classical Academy is a public school, Pinnacle – like other charter schools – receives no capital funding and thus has relied on the USDA to help finance this $15 million project. The project will effectively double the footprint of the current school, adding roughly 60,000 square feet and expanding the gymnasium and locker rooms.
“This is our second major project with USDA, and we are so grateful for their help and support – there is simply no way we can meet the demands of Cleveland and surrounding counties for school choice without their
financing,” said Clary.
“The growth we have experienced has put pressure on our facilities, particularly with the college classes offered here,” Dr. Shope added. “We are most anxious to add the additional classrooms, lab, and media space to our campus.”
Pinnacle is currently accepting applications for new students and will hold a lottery on Monday, March
13, at 6:00 PM. Applications are available online at PinnacleClassicalAcademy. com, and students will be accepted on a random basis pending space availability.
“To have additional space will allow us to open even more spots for families looking for a unique, classical curriculum, academic rigor, successful safety record, and many athletic opportunities,” said Clary.
Pinnacle Classical Academy is a tuition-free public charter school with campuses on South Post Road (K-3) and Joe’s Lake Road (4-12) in Shelby. Consistently one of the state’s top-performing public-school units, Pinnacle has 1,137 students in grades K-12 and more kindergarteners than any other school in Cleveland County.

America’s wars, who are the winners?
By Dr. Glenn Mollette
America was involved in Vietnam for 20 years. Our presence started small but by 1965 had significantly escalated. 3.1 million troops saw combat and at least 58,300 were killed. We spent over $120 billion from 1965 to 1973 which led to an oil crisis and rampant inflation. Are you better off today because America fought in Vietnam? Are you safer?
America spent over $2 trillion fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then, we hurried and pulled out of Afghanistan leaving hundreds of millions of dollars in vehicles, buildings, bases, and weapons to be used by the Taliban. The country is now in shambles. Girls are not allowed to go to school beyond the sixth grade. Women are treated horribly by the Taliban. What did we do to help Afghanistan? Are they better off now? Are we better off for our 13 years in that country? We invaded Iraq. We lost over 15,000 active service members and contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan. Take a look at Iraq and Afghanistan today. What did we accomplish?
We approved $113 billion in aid to Ukraine in 2022 alone. Most Americans do not want Russia to succeed in conquering Ukraine. Efforts to help Ukraine have been supported by most Americans. How far do we go? How much can we afford? How

long are we able to keep this up? Does this become another Afghanistan?
American troops are not there, yet. When will this happen? When do we start fighting in Taiwan? China wants to control Taiwan. Taiwan is rich in resources and technology. Like Russia wanting Ukraine because of its proximity and resources, China figures it just makes sense for them to control neighboring Taiwan.

NC Legislative leaders file motion to intervene in abortion lawsuit
Legislative leaders filed a motion to intervene in Bryant v. Stein to defend the state’s pro-life laws following Attorney General Josh Stein’s refusal to represent the state on Tuesday, February 21.
Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham)
China is reportedly on the verge, if not already sending military arms to Russia. As America depletes our own defense stockpile of missiles, tanks and more, China knows we will have less to send to Taiwan. We have recently sent 200 soldiers to Taiwan and more will be going. It is scary to ponder how many more will be going in the next year or two.
In the middle of all this, who is really profiting from America’s forever wars? The Military Industrial Complex will continue to make hundreds of millions of dollars with no end in sight. Manufacturers of mass weapons used in war have no end to their financial gains. Politicians who own stock in these massive companies only stand to get richer and richer. Politicians should not be allowed to buy stock while in office. Before running for a political office they should be required to cash their stock out so they are not financially persuaded to promote the success of certain industries.
We don’t want Ukraine to fall to Russia or Taiwan to China. However, what will our country have left to fight with after we have spent billions of dollars defending them? If your livelihood comes from investments in the massive military weapon sales industries , then you are probably spending most of your time counting your money.

Two Atrium Hospitals honored by ACS
Atrium Health
Carolinas Medical Center and Atrium
Health Wake Forest
Baptist Medical Center are the first and only hospitals in North Carolina – and among only 28 in the world – to receive international recognition by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Quality Verification Program. The inaugural group includes 25 U.S. hospitals and three international hospitals – two in Japan and one in Australia.
According to the ACS, the Quality Verification Program standards provide a proven and standardized method for establishing, measuring and improving a hospital’s quality infrastructure across all surgical departments.
In 2018, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center served as the first pilot site for the program and helped the ACS develop the standards. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist surgeons then worked
closely with Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center when they became a pilot site in 2019.
“Our teams at Carolinas Medical Center and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center partnered to embark on this quality journey and achieve this outstanding milestone,” said Dr. Brent Matthews, vice president and chief surgeon for Atrium Health’s greater Charlotte region and chair of surgery at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.
“Their work has strengthened our quality program even further and will enhance patient care in our facilities.”
“This prestigious verification lets our patients, community and teammates know that we have the safest and highest standards and the best resources to
ensure superior surgical care, from before surgery all the way through discharge,” said Dr. J. Wayne Meredith, chief of surgery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and professor and chair of surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
“As an academic learning health system, we are committed to developing and delivering innovative, high-quality care,” Meredith said. “We are honored to have had such an important role in helping the ACS develop this program, and we are proud we could help elevate surgical care at other hospitals across the country and around the world.”
Both hospitals received site visits and comprehensive assessments by the ACS team, which included recommendations on engaging the entire team – from leadership to front line providers – to create and maintain an ongoing culture of safety and quality. The current verification period runs through 2025.

NC surpasses 100 arrests with DNA database hits
Attorney General Josh Stein announced earlier this month that North Carolina’s law enforcement agencies have reported making 102 arrests related to at least 175 crimes by testing evidence in cases with a sexual offense and receiving hits from DNA samples the North Carolina State Crime Lab submitted to CODIS.
CODIS is the system of local, state, and national criminal justice DNA databases and under the Survivor Act, law enforcement agencies are required to report to the State Crime Lab when they make an arrest because of a CODIS hit. Nearly 85 percent of the arrests have been made since 2017.
“Testing DNA solves crimes, gives victims and survivors their day in court, and gets dangerous criminals off our streets,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “I’m grateful to the scientists at the State Crime Lab and our law enforcement partners throughout the state for their commit-
ment to using science to solve crimes. Every one of these arrests makes our communities safer.” Law enforcement in North Carolina have made arrests related to attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, statutory rape of a child, sex offenses, and crimes against children, among others. Of the 102 arrests, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was responsible for 24, the Durham Police Department was responsible for 14, and the Fayetteville Police Department was responsible for 12.
NC Attorney General Josh Stein
• The Fayetteville Police Department arrested a man for robbery in 2019. When his DNA was collected upon arrest, he was charged with and eventually pleaded guilty to nine counts of rape, 15 counts of sexual offense, and other charges related charges dating back to 2009.
These arrests are from both cold cases and more recent offenses. Among them:
•The Wilmington Police Department charged a man in 2020 with first-degree kidnapping, rape, and sexual offense in a 1995 rape.
• The Durham Police Department arrested a man in 2022 for a 17-year-old rape, burglary, and kidnapping.
• The Wilson Police Department and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office charged a man in 2022 for two rapes that occurred in 1997 and 2002.

Working Out Your Christian Faith
The New Testament book of James is a workout manual for the Christian faith.
To be clear, no one can be saved by his works. Only by God’s grace can we be saved through faith in His Son— whom James calls “our glorious Lord Jesus Christ” (Jam 2:1).
Paul states plainly how we are saved: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us,” and “By grace you have been saved through faith” (Tit 3:5; Eph 2:8).
So how do works fit into the Christian life? Someone rightly said, “We are not saved by works
Steve Taylor Pastor Bethlehem Baptist Church
but for works.”
Faith in Christ is the root but good works will be the fruit. We are “created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Eph 2:10).
“Working out” our faith therefore, is a necessary part of our Christian living!
“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling” applies just as much to us today as it did to the Philippians in Paul’s day (Phil 2:12).
Just as we need to exercise and work out our bodies, we need to work out our faith!
And the book of James is full of exercises. Over 60 times, James uses imperatives to direct our energies and focus our efforts.
It reminds me of T-25 workouts by Shaun T. He begins one session by saying, “FOCUS! This is T-25 Beta Rip’t Circuit. All right guys, we’re going to work today. We’re working out our cardio, upper body, lower body, and abs. And your focus begins now.”
Let me also begin these March weekly articles by saying, “Your focus on James begins now!”
This month, we’ll get into these much needed workouts: #1 - Enduring Various Trials
(1:2–12); #2 - Obeying the Word (1:19–25); #3 - Showing Impartial Love (2:1–13); and #4Resolving Relational Conflicts (4:1–12).
Let us be workout Christians, not “name-only” Christians! Let us put on our workout clothes, work up a sweat, and exercise our faith! And all the while, keep in mind
It is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

REAL I.D. gets real in 2025
Beginning May 7, 2025, federal agencies will enforce the REAL ID Act, which requires a REAL ID, U.S. passport or another federally approved identification to board commercial flights and enter secure federal buildings. The N.C. REAL ID is a REAL ID Act-compliant driver license that is just like a traditional license or ID but has a star at the top. Driver licenses and IDs without a gold star are noted “Not for Federal Identification.”
N.C. REAL ID Is Completely Optional. You do not need a REAL ID driver license or identification card to do any of the following:
• Drive
• Vote
• Apply for or receive federal benefits (e.g., Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, etc.)
• Enter a federal facility that does not require an ID (e.g., a post office)
• Access a hospital or receive life-saving services
• Participate in law enforcement proceedings or investigations (e.g., serve on a federal jury, testify in federal court, etc.)
A REAL ID, however, might be helpful for
anyone who frequently:
• Boards a commercial airplane
• Visits nuclear sites
• Visits military bases
• Visits federal courthouses, federal prisons, or other federal facilities
An individual without a REAL ID or U.S. passport may still be able to board flights or make visits to the facilities mentioned above, but they may have to provide additional documentation with their traditional license or ID.
Getting an N.C. REAL ID
Even though the federal law is not effective until May 7, 2025, anyone can get a REAL ID now.
To do so, visit an N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office with the required acceptable documentation:
• One document (with full name) proving identity and date of birth
• One document (with full name and full Social Security Number) confirming Social Security number
• Two documents (with current physical address) proving North Carolina residency
• For non-U.S. citizens, one document (with full
name) proving legal presence/lawful status
• If applicable, one or more documents verifying any name change
Other Details to Know
• Your first N.C. REAL ID cannot be obtained online. It can only be issued at a driver license office, where required documents will be scanned and permanently stored, as required under federal law, in your NCDMV record.
• Getting a n N.C. REAL ID driver license or ID card costs the same as getting any other license or ID for the first time, and the process is similar.
• If you get an N.C. REAL ID outside of the renewal period, the cost is same as a duplicate license or ID card. You will have to take a new photo, but no tests are required.
• The cost is the same as a renewal, if the REAL ID is obtained within six months of expiration. You will have to take a vision test and take a new photo.
• Applying for a North Carolina driver license or ID card will cancel any licenses or ID cards from other states through the State-to-State Verification program.
Bible study starts March 9
By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain native Cindi Wood, and her team, announce their next pop-up Bible study at Big Red’s Café, 830 E King Street, starting on Thursday, March 9, from 10 a.m. until noon and continuing for seven-weeks. The topic of this Bible study is: The Frazzled Female for such a time as this.
After seeing the popularity of pop-up markets, Cindi and her team got the idea to hold seven-week pop-up Bible studies for women and started one in Shelby at Phifer’s Café which will end later this month.
The Frazzled Female Bible study is based on Cindi’s twenty-plus years of experience helping people combat stress by managing time, using humor, organizing, and teaching them to develop a deeper relation-
ship with Jesus. “Our ministry’s heart is to share the love of Jesus and encourage women in this day and time,” Cindi said. “Whether married or used to be married, single, with kids or without, working on the home front or out in the work world (or both), you may qualify for membership in the Frazzled Female Club! The frazzled female ministry is a ministry reaching out to all females who long for more peace and sanity in daily living.”
Cindi is a sought-after speaker and Bible teacher, guiding women to deal with daily stress by experiencing a practical and deep relationship with Jesus Christ.
“It’s my joy to share with women from all walks of life how to begin and then continue to live a victorious life—one that is not free
Cindi Wood

It’s Read Across America Week
By Loretta Cozart
It is Read Across America Week (RAA) nationwide, and in Kings Mountain all elementary schools are participating with guest readers. Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6, but Kings Mountain is celebrating this week from February 27 – March 3. The event is used to promote reading and begins on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading.
At North Elementary School Monday, guest readers read books to the students. The first guest readers of the day were from Gardner-Webb University. Later, readers from Kings Mountain High School Football team read with the children. After reading with the students, the athletes signed autographs.
West Elementary School added activities for each day of RAA at their school..
On Monday, students wore crazy sox; Tuesday they wore green; Wednesday is pajama day; Thursday is hat day; and Friday is college
shirt day. East Elementary School began RAA by casting off in search of Book Blast treasure. Students received a map and began the treasure hunt. Students who complete the task get a chance to win one of four Treasure Chests stuffed with cash and even an Apple iPad. Even better, students will be starting their journey to earning all 10 books on the Treasure Map book list.
Bethware Elementary School began their RAA week by bringing a stuffed animal to school. Each grade level was assigned a day for Breakfast for Book. Parents can come with their child on their assigned day and read from 7:45-8:30 in the media center. Tuesday students brought a beach towel to use while reading; Wednesday, bring a flashlight; Thursday, wear silly socks and show them off; and Friday, wear a hat while reading in the classroom.
The National Education Association (N.E.A.) aims to encourage reading and educate people about its benefits, especially among children and young adults. Events are organized across
the nation by schools and organizations to promote the same.
Revenue Forecast Projects $3.25 Billion Surplus for North Carolina
Raleigh, NC – The consensus revenue forecast was released today, illustrating the economic growth in our state over the last year as the state considers the next state budget. The forecast shows that the state has a one-time $3.25 billion surplus.
House Speaker Tim Moore said, “The surplus projected in today’s con-
Packed house for NCLM’s Town & State Dinner
Special to the Herald from NCLM
More than 500 elected and staff government officials filled the Raleigh Convention Center on Wednesday, February 22, for the fifth installment of the North Carolina League of Municipalities’ (NCLM) popular Town & State Dinner, uniting municipal, and legislative leaders for relationship-building, the talking-through of various timely issues, and to hear updates and perspective from House and Senate majority and minority leaders on the shape of North Carolina.
sensus revenue forecast demonstrates the economic strength of our state, which has attracted both businesses and families to North Carolina.”
He continued, “I am confident that as we continue to address some of the state’s most pressing needs, we will continue doing so in a fiscally responsible way that
leads to even more growth for North Carolina. This is the approach we will take as we consider our budget priorities of targeted raises for law enforcement and other key personnel, greater investments in infrastructure, and workforce development initiatives.”

Over a meal, and following a networking social, attendees from areas across the state utilized the occasion to strengthen intergovernmental connections as the General Assembly carries out its annual lawmaking session, which speakers noted can include a wide variety of issues, making communication between local and state officials a priority.
“We may not always agree on the exact path, but we all do this to try to make our state better,” said event emcee William Harris, the commissioner from Fuquay-Varina and NCLM Board of Directors first vice-president. Commissioner Harris introduced question-and-answer panels featured over the evening, starting with House Speaker Tim Moore and House Democratic Leader Rep. Robert Reives, moderated by NCLM President and Kings Mountain Mayor Scott Neisler.
“Keep up with what’s
going on with us,” Rep. Reives said as encouragement for municipal officials to monitor and interact with the legislative process. He urged local officials to keep communication channels open with their lawmakers for clear understandings of issues or needs. “We don’t know everything, and because we don’t know everything, we’ve got to have folks on the ground that tell us here’s what’s going on with it, here’s what we need, here’s how you can best serve us,” Reives said, noting those might be hard conversations sometimes.
“But you’re the folks on the ground touching the communities every day, and there’s nothing more important for us than to get information.” Speaker Moore also urged healthy local-state communication, and noted that all officials have common ground in that they’re working for the best that North Carolina can be.
“It is the highest honor that I’ve had, to serve in this role,” Speaker Moore said. “When I travel around, I tell people they’re my boss. And I mean it.” He said there are always tough days on the job, “but at the same time, we all know we’re in it -- and I know that the folks on the other side of the aisle and the other side of the building -- are there for the right reasons, and that is caring about this great state. So, while there’s always those days that are tough, in the end, the good always outweighs those tough times.”
Senate leader Phil Berger and the chamber’s
minority leader, Sen. Dan Blue, also took the stage for discussion as moderated by Durham Mayor Pro Tem Mark-Anthony Middleton, NCLM’s second vice-president. Sen. Blue pointed out the diversity of North Carolina’s more-than-540 cities and towns, and how lawmaking that affects cities should bear that in mind.
“Each is unique,” Blue said, adding he’s appreciated the help of the League and its members for serving as resources clarifying the nuance and effects of proposals that come forward in context with municipalities.
Sen. Berger, a former municipal attorney, gave remarks about topics including infrastructure and the state’s economy. Sen. Berger agreed with Sen. Blue that North Carolina’s economic position in relation to other U.S. states is strong, with a bounceback measured from the hard days of the pandemic.
Sen. Berger pointed out that North Carolina today has 2 million more registered voters than it did 10 years ago and called that a showing of people planting their roots here to take advantage of all the state has to offer. “We’re probably doing most things better than most other states, and we just need to make sure we continue that as we go forward,” Sen. Berger said.

Homeowners Should Prepare for Bat Roosting Season Now Wildlife officials say to
check for bats before May 1
RALEIGH, N.C. (February 27, 2023) – If you suspect bats may be living in your home, biologists at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission ask that you relocate them responsibly before pup-rearing season begins on May 1. Bat scat, called guano, is the most obvious indication that bats may be living in the gable vents, behind a shutter or in another nook around the outside or inside your home. If they’re getting inside, a licensed Wildlife Control Agent can safely evict them for you. You can find a list of licensed professionals on the Wildlife Commission’s website, ncwildlife.org.
Bats hibernate or migrate south during the winter, which is why you may only start to see them now. They are ecologically and economically valuable, providing free pest control as they nearly devour their own body weight in insects nightly. Their appetite increases even more during
pup-rearing season, which runs May 1 – July 31 across North Carolina.
“Eviction methods rely on a bat’s ability to fly out of the roost, then measures are taken to prevent reentry. Young bats are initially flightless and are totally dependent on their mothers, so when adult bats are evicted, the young perish because they can’t yet leave the roost or survive on their own. To make matters worse, mother bats may end up in the living space of a building trying to seek alternate ways to get to their pups. By August 1, young bats are mature enough to fly, so eviction methods are safe to resume at that point,” stated Katherine Etchison, wildlife diversity biologist with the Wildlife Commission. If you are unable to remove bats from your home before rearing season, it is best to leave them in their roost until the end of July. However, you can still ask

a Wildlife Control Agent to seal off entryways that lead into your living space to minimize the chance of human interaction. If a bat does enter your living space and human exposure occurs, or might have occurred, contact your county health department immediately.
Bats return to the same roost each spring, so it’s important to maintain your home after evicting them. You can provide alternative roosting space by installing bat boxes 12 to 20 feet high in a place with at least seven hours of direct sunlight in the summer. For tips on building, buying or installing bat boxes, visit batcon.org/about-bats/batgardens-houses/. If you have questions about interactions with bats, contact the Commission’s NC Wildlife Helpline, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., at 866-318-2401 or email HWI@ncwildlife.org.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ
By Gar y Miller Gary Miller
In my area there are a few small streams that feed into the rivers. When I say small, I mean only about 10 to 15 yards wide. Several times each spring our wildlife agency releases trout into these shallow streams to offer more opportunities to catch fish. There have been several times I have went on an early morning turkey hunt, then afterwards go home and grab my spinning reel and head back to one of these creeks for a couple of hours of trout fishing. It really is a fun way to spend a morning. I can remember the first time I took my son and introduced him to this new type of fishing. He was an older teenager, and I could tell he was a little skeptical when I pulled up to the little creek that seemed too shallow to hold any fish of consequence. I knew what he was thinking because I too had shared this sentiment. It really does look like if there were any fish in the creek you would quickly be able to see them. After convincing him the fish were actually there, we proceeded to wet a line. It didn’t take long for him to understand that what looked to be too small, too shallow, unproductive, void, and barren could hold great potential. What he needs to learn is that life is exactly the same way. I’m glad he decided to fish that day instead of allowing what he saw to determine what he did. Let me write that again so you will get it. I’m glad he didn’t allow what he saw to determine what he did. If he had of, he would’ve missed a good time and a great harvest. Some of you are getting up each morning and looking at your day as my son did this creek. When you give it the eye test it seems what lies in front of you is too small and too shallow to hold anything of real value. It may even seem God has given you a Ranger Bass Boat, but only a stream to fish in. What you must remember is that faith is more about seeing through the eye than it is in seeing with the eye. Faith doesn’t look at the small and insignificant stream, but it remembers the God who has stocked it. Faith simply casts its bread upon the waters without regard for the past, present, or future; knowing that if God can bring salvation from a cross, He can bring big blessings from my little brook.
