From the Editor
Summer is upon us and the event calendar is crammed full. I wish I could figure out how to expand my days into 28 hours instead of only 24, my weeks into the Beetle’s “Eight Days a Week” and possibly extend my calendar another page for a baker’s dozen of “13” months. But alas...I don’t think even A.I. can help solve this one. Now something we CAN do is extend our weekend getaways to three or four or maybe even five days. Which brings me to this issue featuring fairs, festivals, and summer celebrations. Having grown up in the Missouri city that is home to the state fair and playing my accordion in a band that performed at numerous street and county fairs, I am still quite partial to this time of year. I don’t know who made the rule that going to the carnival must be the very last thing on the agenda, but my mother always stuck to that rule.

There’s Fairs...And Festivals...and Anniversaries...And Celabrations
Galore! Oh My! In 110 fully-packed pages this issue.
We had to first go through the endless buildings lined with booths. There was the art show, and the flower arrangement display, barnyard petting zoo and home economics showcase of decorated cake and needlework. Now when I was younger, I could have easily whizzed right through all of that in about 10 minutes if I had been left to go at my own speed. I was more interested in the highway department talking car and the dairy bar where they kept the cow sculptured from butter. And the ice cream there tasted pretty fabulous on a hot day. The evening grandstand shows were always pretty enjoyable. I loved the fireworks display at the end for two reasons: one, they were pretty and the other, it was the end of the day and CARNIVAL TIME! Such pleasant memories. What are you favorite festival/fair/celebration memories? Read through this issue, head to your next event, add memories, and then share them with us >HERE
Those who do, will be entered to win our next weekend getaway!

Father’s Favorite Flapstacks Recipes For Living
I recently attended a high school art show. There was the usual assortment of pieces which displayed the bare minimum of effort. Then there were quite a few which had involved a lot of work. Unfortunately, they just didn’t exhibit much skill.
However, the use of materials and time was not wasted as there were a few items which showcased real talent. In fact, some were truly inspiring. As a result, I dusted off my tools and paintbrushes and attempted to create a masterpiece of my own. I said attempted. The final results remain to be seen. At times, I think I can do this. Then there are other days when I think I should stick with writing.
After all, what I do can be considered artistry. It is Artistry of Words. The following is an interesting and fun example of this. There are several versions available on the internet, but as far as I can tell, the original author is unknown. This is an appropriate time to use it in honor of Father’s Day.
Feeling footloose, frisky and fancy-free, a feather-brained fellow forced his fond father to fork over the family finances. He fled far into foreign fields
and frittered away his family’s fortune with faithless friends. Flooded with flattery, he financed a full-fledged fling with fabulously-fine food.
Finally, fleeced by his fellows in folly and facing famine, he found himself a feed flinger in a filthy farmyard. Feeling frail and faintly fuzzy from being fully famished, he fain would have filled his frame with foraged food from the fodder fragments.
“Forsooth!” he figured, “my father’s flunkies fare far fancier.” The frazzled fugitive fumed feverishly, frankly facing facts. Finally, frustrated by failure and filled with foreboding, but following his feelings, he forthwith fled from the filthy foreign farmyard back to his family.
Faraway, the father focused on the fretful and yet familiar form approaching on the footpath. He flew to him and fondly flung his forearms around the fatigued fugitive. Falling at his father’s feet, the fugitive floundered forlornly, “Father, I have flunked and fruitlessly forfeited family favor.”
Forestalling and forbidding further flinching, the faithful father answered, “Fooey!”
Then he frantically flagged his flunkies. “Fetch forth the finest fatling and fix a feast.”
Faithfully, the father’s firstborn was in a fertile field fixing fences while father and fugitive were feeling festive. The foreman felt fantastic as he flashed the fortunate news of a familiar family face which had forsaken fatal foolishness. Forty-four feet from the farmhouse, the firstborn found a farmhand fixing the fatling feast.
The fugitive’s fraternal faultfinder frowned on the fickle forgiveness of the former folderol. He found his fond father and fumed, “Flawed fun with floozies from frittered family funds and you fix a feast following the fugitive’s folderol?” His fury flashed, but fussing was futile.
The frugal firstborn felt it was fitting to feel ‘favored’ for his faithfulness and fidelity to family, father and farm. In foolhardy fashion, he faulted the father for failing to furnish a fatling and feast for his friends.
His fundamental fallacy was a fixation on favoritism, not forgiveness. Frankly, the father felt the frigid firstborn’s frugality of forgiveness was for-

midable and frightful. But the father’s former faithful fortitude and fearless forbearance to forgive both fugitive and first-born flourished.
The far-sighted father figured, “Such filial fidelity is fine, but what forbids fervent festivity? The fugitive is found! Unfurl the flag! Follow with fanfares! Let fun and frolic freely flow! Folly is forsaken! Furthermore, failure is forgotten. A Father’s forgiveness forms the foundation for former fugitive’s future fortitude. Let fervent feasting begin. Fond frater has returned.”
None of the versions of this story indicated what they ate along with the fatted fatling, but
By Kandy Derden Things to Do Editor
I’m sure this recipe would have been quite tasty when paired with whatever they served.
FATHER’S FAVORITE FLAPSTACKS
½ lb. bacon, coarsely chopped
1 ¼ c. flour
¾ c. cornmeal
3 tsp. baking powder
¾ tsp. salt
1 ½ c. milk
½ c. shredded cheddar cheese
2 eggs
2 tbsp. melted butter
3 tsp. sugar
Fry bacon in a large skillet, stirring occasionally. Drain, saving the grease. Mix flour, cornmeal, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl. Add drained bacon and rest of
ingredients listed. Stir just until smooth and let the batter rest while heating griddle. Grease griddle with reserved bacon grease. Drop batter on the griddle by ¼ cupful. When bubbles form and edges begin to dry, flip and cook until browned. Serve with butter and maple syrup.
I have relatives who insist the best way to enjoy these is with chopped onions sauteed along with the bacon. They also add pepper to most of the foods they eat. Believe it or not, it has been suggested that a hint of black pepper and/or cayenne pepper be added to the batter before cooking. I’m a bit of a skeptic, but that’s not the strangest ingredient I’ve ever seen in a recipe. I found one which suggested adding chipotle powder to the syrup. If you get brave enough to try it, let me know how it turned out.
Either way, I’m sure Father’s Favorite Flapstacks will be frequently requested. This is how I turn Artistry of Words into Edible Artistry on a Plate.

Game of Kubb
A (Sand Bucket) In Oceana County
lanning your Summer Bucket List? Dump the list. Grab a bucket, and bury your toes in the sand. If you thought your days of playing in a sandbox were over, you’re wrong. Oceana County is the place where you can feel like a kid again. No formalities here, just a cluster of small Michigan towns with natural beauty and family-friendly fun. Watch the orange sun dip behind the dunes, then lick drippy softserve ice cream cones under a neon sign after a day of puttputt and bicycling. End the day staring up at the stars, and fall asleep, blissfully exhausted from sunshine and fresh air.
P P
Oceana County in Western Michigan has been entertaining summer visitors for generations. The county comprises several small towns (Hart, Shelby, Mears, Pentwater) and all are in close proximity to each other. Sand dunes separate Silver Lake from Lake Michigan, so summer fun seekers have easy access to both. Sandboard rentals on Silver Lake offer the chance to hang ten on a dune as you speed down (or sink thanks to gravity). Either way, sand surfing is something kids and adults can try. The falls don’t hurt and the learning curve is quick. Rentals are reasonable–around $10 for an hour or $30 for the day.
Silver Lake Sand Dunes is one of the few places where vehicles are allowed on the dunes. Rent ORV’s (off-road vehicles) or take the Mac Wood’s Dune Rides, an open-aired red dune buggy. These laugh-out-loud tours sometimes feel like a gentle rollercoaster as you cruise and dip over dunes–put your arms up for the complete experience. These tours started back in 1930, and the first one was designed from a Model A Ford, holding four passengers. The current Dune Scooter has multiple rows and takes groups on 40-minute tours with a stop at the highest dune with sparkling lake views.
Delicious Detours
After Mac Wood’s Dune Rides, head next door to Silver Lake Whippy Dip. This delicious tradition offers shade trees and outdoor tables with yummy local ice cream. A family can share “Test Hill,” a ginormous sundae served on a frisbee:

Two piles of vanilla ice cream, two piles of chocolate ice cream, one pile of twist ice cream with an Oreo bottom–all topped with strawberries, hot fudge, hot caramel, cherries, and whipped cream.
Another must-eat food here is asparagus. You cannot truly appreciate the tender crisp stalk of asparagus, until you’ve tasted a freshly plucked spear from the sandy soil of Oceana County in West Michigan. This area holds the title for “The Asparagus Capital of the Nation,” and you can buy them fresh from farmer’s markets or try them fried with dipping sauce. Either way is incredible, and a perfect way to taste summer at its best.
Cool off at one of several area Silver Lake Sand Dunes/Hart Beaches like Silver Lake State Park or Mears State Park in Pentwater along Lake Michigan. Silver Lake State Park is home to a historic working lighthouse built in the late 1870’s. The red-brick lighthouse provides the perfect backdrop to watch the sunrise or set. Then, retire to one of several resorts or campgrounds on the lake.
What’s the fuss? 50 Years of Asparagus!
Every day here feels like a summer celebration, but if you time your visit right you can
sneak in the added bonus of a festival. June 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the National Asparagus Festival on June 10th and 11th. Fresh asparagus grown in Michigan’s sandy soil is a local delight. Classic events like the Ryan Walsworth Spear It 5K, Taste of Asparagus, parade, and a fly-in pancake breakfast. Add in music, fireworks set against the lake, and this is summer!
Why celebrate asparagus though? To say asparagus is a big deal in Oceana County is an understatement. Just ask Michele Amstutz, the National Asparagus Festival President and 2008 Mrs. Asparagus. “Asparagus has been an integral part of our county for years,” she says. “Oceana County is one of the leading producers nationally for asparagus.” As the popularity of asparagus continues to soar, so has the festival’s popularity. “Nothing tastes better than fresh West Michigan asparagus! So why not continue to celebrate it!”

Up, Up and Away Old West Balloon
With Nebraska’s historic Scotts Bluff in the background, about 30 hot air balloons launch shortly after sunrise. Filling the western sky with color and various shapes, balloon pilots from the Midwest and beyond participate in the annual Old West Balloon Fest Aug. 7-12. About 15,000 people attend the festivities.
Once part of the Old West Weekend community celebration, that festival ended after about 20 years. The name is now associated with a high school marching band competition during the fall.
Organizers revived the Old West Balloon Fest in 2015, growing it to a weeklong celebration of both hot air balloon flights and community activities. The area hosted the National Hot Air Ballooning Competition in 2019, 2021 and 2022. About 50 professional balloon pilots competed for national honors.
The Old West Balloon Fest returns to its roots in 2023, focusing on 30 pilots flying balloons across Nebraska’s panhandle, with views of Scotts Bluff, Chimney Rock and the Pine Ridge, as well as the state’s only national forest. The festival takes place in Scottsbluff, Gering and Mitchell. Balloons launch in a mass ascension shortly after sunrise Aug. 11-12 from Mitchell Airfield. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, with free parking available at the airfield. New in 2023, Kids Balloon Camp Aug. 7-9 educates children 5-13 years old about aspects of hot air balloons, from the science of flying to its mechanics.
The Old West Balloon Fest kicks off with balloon action the evening of Aug. 9 with the initial hot air balloon glow. Hundreds of people gather on the campus of Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff 6-9 p.m. to enjoy music, games, vendors and food truck dining before the balloon glow starts soon after dusk. Rotating, pilots shoot a burst of hot air into their balloons creating a majestic view of colorful images in the night sky.
With the first mass ascension set for as early as 6:15 a.m. Aug. 11, gates open around 5:30
a.m. Visitors are encouraged to roam the parade grounds, watching up-close as crews prepare their balloons for launch. From rollout to ascension, it’s a fan-friendly environment as conversations take place. Sometimes, crews may need assistance and will look for volunteers.
Watching a balloon crew at work is an impressive experience. The way each team works together in a small space reveals the trust each pilot has with his or her team. Spreading the balloon flat on the ground, connecting the cables and rope, and then filling it with the gas, teams ready the hot air balloon for flight.
In the meantime, visitors traverse the grounds, moving from balloon to balloon, soaking in the

sights of multi-colored balloons, solid colors and balloons with professional company sponsorships, as well as special shapes, including Humpty Dumpty.
The mass ascension begins with a balloon pilot launching and displaying the American flag as the national anthem is played. Upon its conclusion, balloons begin rising from the ground, one by one, until the sky is full of color and shapes. The event is repeated Saturday morning.
Following the Friday morning flights, the rest of the day is open for exploring the area, including visits to the Scotts Bluff National Monument and Legacy of the Plains Museum. Enjoy a drive or hike to the summit of Scotts Bluff, offering views of the region’s buttes and forests, as well as Chimney Rock – used by Indigenous people and settlers traveling west as a gauge for distance to the Rocky Mountains – which is about 25 miles from Scottsbluff.
Legacy of the Plains Museum in Gering provides an interesting look into the area’s history, from its earliest days to the western movement, as well as its
agriculture base. With exhibits such as plastic saddles, beet farming equipment and a living history community, it’s a must-see when in the area.
Following Saturday’s mass ascension, Mitchell hosts a downtown craft fair on Center Avenue from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Redz Bar in Mitchell is the site of a cornhole tournament, where challengers can test their bean bag tossing skills. A popular Weiner dog race is hosted at a park on the south end of Center Avenue beginning at 11 a.m.
The Old West Balloon Fest wraps up its activities with music, food and drink at Gering’s Five Rocks Amphitheater beginning at 5 p.m. The final night glow begins at sunset and runs for several minutes.
While the Old West Balloon Fest may not be among the largest in the country, it is one of the most entertaining and fan-friendly festivals. For

Washboard Fun
Experience the Annual Washboard Arts and Musical Festival in Logan, Ohio, as it pays homage to a unique piece of American history. Taking place every year on Father’s Day weekend, the vibrant downtown streets of Logan come alive with the celebration of the washboard as a musical instrument. This festival holds special significance for Logan as it is the home of the Columbus Washboard Company, the sole remaining washboard manufacturing company in the United States.
The roots of this tradition can be traced back to rural America in the mid-1800s, when music played a central role in family entertainment despite limited financial resources. In those days, the washboard, an empty jug, a stick, and a string attached to an upturned metal tub served as the rustic equivalent of a Carnegie Hall performance on Saturday nights. Over time, the washboard evolved into a “vest” that hangs from the shoulders, producing the distinct raspy sound that became the rhythmic heartbeat of Cajun music in the Bayou. Welcome to
Logan, the heart of the breathtaking Hocking Hills, and revel in Ohio’s Most Unique Music Festival!
Prepare to be captivated by an incredible music lineup featuring renowned performers. Thursday’s headliners, The Nelons, offer a mesmerizing blend of gospel, a cappella, hymns, Americana, folk, and inspirational music. On Friday, Williamson Branch, a talented bluegrass group from Nashville, will grace the stage. Finally, on Saturday, Cincinnati-based ensemble Buffalo Wabs and The Price Hill Hustle will entertain the crowd.
In addition to the exceptional
musical performances, the festival will bring back popular attractions such as the Car Show, Arts & Crafts vendors, and the Washboard Festival Train ride. Families can enjoy FREE Children’s Activities, ensuring a fun-filled experience for all.
Above all else, don’t miss the opportunity to tour the last remaining washboard factory in the United States, where authentic manufacturing takes place. For more information and an upcoming schedule, visit our website at https://www.loganwashboardfestival.com/.

Juneteenth
By Renée S. Gordon History and Travel Writer
“That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”
President: ABRAHAM LINCOLN
MILWAUKEE - For thousands of years, at the juncture of the Kinnickinnic, Menomonee and Milwaukee Rivers, Native American tribes lived on the land that is now the city of Milwaukee. The earliest European documentation of the area dates from 1674 when French Jesuit Father Marquette traversed the Great Lakes region following routes he learned of from the inhabitants. Shortly thereafter fur traders entered the area and Milwaukee considers the construction of Jacque Vieau’s trading post in 1795 and its subsequent ownership by his son-in-law, Solomon Juneau, as the founding of the city. In 1822 Juneau built a log cabin and in 1833 he and a partner sold land to newcomers and started a settlement.
In the 19th-century the city was always involved with abolitionism even though the number of African Americans was small. Generally, the residents were anti-slavery but it must be noted that this did not mean they supported racial inclusion.
As independent landowners they were particularly dis-
pleased with the Fugitive Slave Act that demanded that all fugitives be returned to their owner with the aid of noninvolved citizens in the vicinity.
national attention to the state.
Joshua Glover was born enslaved in St. Louis, Missouri in 1811, escaped slavery and settled in Racine, Wisconsin in 1852. After being betrayed by a friend his former owner recaptured him. He was taken to county jail in Milwaukee by federal marshals. As soon as the abolitionists learned of his imprisonment and intent to return him to slavery, the city mobilized. Word went out and a crowd formed at the jail to give impassioned speeches and generally protest.

Lincoln’s preliminary Emancipation Proclamation was announced on September 22, 1862. It declared that all enslaved individuals (more than 3-million) residing in rebellious states were to be deemed free as of January 1, 1863. The enslaved’s freedom was predicated on the region in which they resided being under Union control and whether the people were informed.
In several cases years would pass. It was not until June 19, 1865 that word would reach Galveston, Texas along with Union forces under the command of General Gordon Granger. The proclamation was read to the population and this is commemorated as the date upon which the final Confederate enslaved were freed. A jubilee took place immediately following the announcement with singing, dancing and praises.
In Texas on June 19, 1866 the original Juneteenth celebra-

Legend has it that North Alabama’s Muscle Shoals region was named after the Tennessee River shoals that required muscle to navigate. Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia made up an area where the river was particularly difficult to navigate. The Yuchi Indians, whose home was along the river, were aware of the unique sound of the water passing over the shoals and referred to it as “The Singing River” long before European contact. The indigenous people believed a woman sang from the river and her song protected them and their culture.
There is something mystical that permeates the region and it would become a music mecca, Hit Recording Capitol of the World and custodian of the cultures of all the groups that interacted there. Chief Chilly McIntosh declared at the time, “As long as our nation remains upon this earth we will recollect Tuscumbia.” A tree statue of the chief stands in Tuscumbia Spring Park. Also in the park stands “Sacred Tears”, an 8-ft., 1-ton, monumental sculpture of a native woman with a baby in one arm and a hand resting on a cross, representing all those who perished on the trail.

The rivers did not sing. At the end of a year Te-lah-nay set out to reclaim the mystical music. She walked alone for five years. Tom honored her journey with the longest memorial to a woman or a Native American. If laid out in a line the wall would be 2.50 miles long with a 4 level prayer circle. The wall is circuitous because, though the walk to Indian Territory was straight, the walk home was fraught with danger and was not linear. The Jacksonville region was home to Florida’s Spanish colonial heritage fully 100-years before Jamestown or Plymouth. Ponce de Léon claimed Florida for Spain in 1513 and gave named it La Florida, the land of flowers, because of its beauty.
Accompanying him was explorer Juan Garrido, documented as the first African in North America. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded what is now the oldest permanent European settlement in the country, St, Augustine, 30-miles from Jacksonville. In 1565 Menéndez, a soldier, was charged with protecting Spain’s land claims and treasure ships against the French Huguenots who had established Fort Caroline in what became Jacksonville Both the French and Spanish had African workers build their fortifications. The indigenous Indian tribes were decimated by the 1700s due to disease, slavery and warfare. @visit_jax

years of service they would be free and the English would not be compensated for their losses. In 1738 a fortified town, Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, was established for the fugitives, becoming the first legal free Black town in the country, outside St.
Modern Jacksonville is 840sq. miles and offers 22-miles of beaches, 80,000-acres of urban parks, 40-miles of intercoastal waterways, excellent accommodations, world class cultural institutions and events and more than the average number of sunny days. But, exclusive to Jacksonville, is the deft blend of cultures and lifestyles of those whose roots reach back in time to create uniquely vibrant experiences. In order to better understand the city’s diversity visitors should seek out museums, restaurants and sites where we can learn about heritage and remember, these experiences are only in Jacksonville.

In 1600 a Spanish census noted that there were 19 African slaves, the 1860 census stated that 43% of Jacksonville’s population was enslaved. Everything Black
BAM Birthplace
The Birthplace of American Music Festival celebrates the rich history and cultural significance of American music, particularly its roots in the blues. It’s wonderful to see a festival that pays homage to the blues and recognizes its influence on various genres that have developed over time.
Music does have the power to unify people and bring them together from different backgrounds. It transcends boundaries, regardless of cultural or social differences. The ability of music to bring people together is a testament to its universal appeal and its capacity to evoke emotions and tell stories.
The historical ties between blues music and black communities are significant. Blues music has visible roots in Africa and was a means of expression and communication for early slaves during a time of upheaval and restrictions on their cultural activities. Despite the challenging circumstances, music provided an outlet for creativity, escape, and a sense of connectivity within the black communities.
The development and trans-
formation of blues music into other genres such as jazz, R&B, rock & roll, country, hip hop, and more have had a profound impact on the music industry worldwide. These genres have influenced countless musicians and shaped the musical landscape in various parts of the world. The ability of blues music to evolve and give birth to new genres is a testament to its enduring power and influence.
The Birthplace of American Music Festival seems like a vibrant and diverse event with performances taking place in multiple venues throughout the Downtown area. The inclusion of live bands, juke joints, blues clubs, and event centers creates a rich musical experience for attendees. Additionally, the presence of delicious food from the Mississippi Delta adds to the festival’s cultural offerings.
The MLK stage area hosting live performers adds a historical significance to the
festival, making it one of the first events to be held on that stage. The combination of live music, street food, and the opportunity to be part of a historic moment through live broadcasts on local radio stations and worldwide streaming makes the festival an exciting and memorable experience for music enthusiasts.
Attending the Birthplace of American Music Festival would undoubtedly be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the legacy of blues music and enjoy a diverse range of performances in a vibrant and culturally rich environment. It’s an event that brings together music lovers, showcases local talent, and honors the historical significance of American music.

30 Years-“God Bless Texas”
Thirty years ago, on July 17, 1993, “God Blessed Texas” was released. The iconic anthem, which captured the hearts of millions, continues to resonate with audiences of all ages and holds a special place in the hearts of country music fans worldwide. A tribute version, which features an extraordinary collaboration of some of the most talented and revered artists that hail from the Lone Star State, have joined forces to pay homage to this legendary track.
Randy Rogers, Casey Donahew, Josh Abbott, Aaron Watson, Rodney Crowell, Kevin Fowler and Pat Green each bring their own unique style, ensuring a fresh and exciting rendition of the beloved classic. “God Blessed Texas” was written by Porter Howell and Brady Seals and originally released by Little Texas. The song struck a chord with listeners and was able to immediately capture the essence of the Lone Star State with its infectious melodies and powerful lyrics. The new music is available Friday, July 14, for download and streaming and can be pre-saved here.
The song became an anthem for Texas pride and a symbol of unity. “This song made me proud to be from Texas,” says Randy Rogers. “I discovered my love for country music right as this song was released and I watched the video a thousand times. So this is truly a full circle moment for me.”
“Like many other Texans, this song is part of my DNA,” exclaimed Casey Donahew. “I wish I had written it. What an honor to be asked to collaborate on the new version. I have toured all 50 states and I
can say one thing for certain, God definitely blessed TEXAS!”
“Bringing an all-star group of Texans together to celebrate 30 years of ‘God Blessed Texas’ is something pretty special,” proudly stated Executive Producer - Brandyn Steen.
“I was a musician in Dallas when “God Blessed Texas” was released, and I was immediately a fan. Over the years, I worked on shows that were with Little Texas, and I’m still a fan. So, it was an honor to be asked to play the guitar parts on this 30th-anniversary tribute,” shared Mark Matejka (guitarist for Lynyrd Skynyrd).

More than four decades later, he continues to blaze trails in music, business, and on the big and small screens. Rakim meanwhile still tops fan polls as the greatest MC of all time.
He crafted his lyrics like poetry, filling his lines with elaborate metaphors and complex internal rhymes. He played with the beat like a jazzman, earning a reputation as the smoothest flowing MC ever to pick up a mic.

Celebrate July 4th All Year
PHILADELPHIA - There is no better place to celebrate America’s independence than in Philadelphia, the city where it all began. Known as “America’s birthplace,” Philadelphia is home to iconic locations and artifacts that tell the story of America’s founding in a way no other place can match. At any time of year, visitors can learn and explore where history happened by touring prominent sites in the city, including where the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776.
Philadelphia is a playground for history buffs. As the first World Heritage City in the United States, the city has 68 National Historical Landmarks that played an important role in the country’s formation in what’s called the nation’s “most historic square mile,” making it the best place in America to celebrate its independence.
Kick off your celebration of the nation’s beginnings at Independence National Historical Park a robust collection of sites including Independence Hall — where the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, and the Constitution was written and debated — and the Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of freedom, as well as the Benjamin Franklin Museum, Franklin Court Printing Office, the Second Bank of the United States, Declaration House, New Hall Military Museum, and more.
Situated on Independence Mall, the President’s House marks the footprint of the residence of Presidents George Washington and John Adams while in office. The site features a display telling the story of the enslaved persons who built and worked in the house while examining the paradox of slavery and freedom in the new nation.
Another prominent historic site to visit is Carpenters’ Hall, the site of the first Continen-
tal Congress in 1774. Here is where you will have the chance to see hand tools, the chairs used by Founding Fathers and other historic artifacts on display. Then, take a tour of the home of reported American flag maker Betsy Ross and learn about her interaction with the Founding Fathers. The Betsy Ross House is also a great place to learn about how working people lived in 18th-century Philadelphia. Continue your journey back in time with a stroll down carefully preserved Elfreth’s Alley — the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited street — lined with 32 Federal and Georgian-style homes.
Explore the dramatic story of the U.S. Constitution from Revolutionary times to the present at the National Constitution Center or head to the Museum of the American Revolution for an overview of the historical sites located throughout the region.

Year Long in Philadelphia
research library focuses on U.S. society and culture from the 17th to 19th centuries and has a vast collection of rare books, manuscripts, prints, and more. Then, tour the place of worship for numerous Founding Fathers and visit Benjamin Franklin’s tomb at Christ Church & Burial Ground founded in 1695. A block from Independence Hall is Washington Square, one of the city’s original squares, and home to the memorial to Washington and unknown soldiers of the American Revolution.
All these historical moments and locations are recognized in a multi-week-long celebration of Independence Day every year in Philadelphia. Culminating in an epic concert and fireworks show on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the city holds its annual Wawa Welcome America festival from June 19 through July 4. The annual event includes 16 days of free multicultural and multigenerational family-friendly special activities and events such as free concerts, museum days, community events, outdoor movie screenings, block parties, and firework shows – all in celebration of America’s birthday.
Plan a visit to Congress Hall, which oversaw two major presidential inaugurations starting with the swearing-in of George Washington in the Senate Chamber for his second term in 1793. Four years later, John Adams took the oath of office in the House Chamber, marking the first peaceful transfer of power in U.S. history.
Visit the oldest learned society in the U.S., the American Philosophical Society which was co-founded by Ben Franklin in 1743. Its museum is a treasure trove of historic items, including William Penn’s 1701 Charter of Privileges, a draft of the Declaration of Independence, and the chair Jefferson sat in to write it.
Benjamin Franklin founded the Library Company of Philadelphia, the country’s first successful lending library, in 1731. Today, the
The Wawa Welcome America festival also includes events commemorating Juneteenth, the anniversary of the ending of slavery in the United States. The festival explores the history of freedom and liberty in the United States, and the ties between two of the nation’s most significant holidays.
Philadelphia is where the United States of America came to be, and the city is proud of its vital role in the country’s history. Celebrating American independence isn’t limited to one day out of the year — the 4th of July — in Philadelphia, it’s a place to celebrate freedom all year round.
