BWK Solicitors in Aylesbury and Spratt Endicott Solicitors in Buckingham are offering Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity supporters the opportunity to write a new Will, or update a current Will, at no charge. Instead, people will be encouraged to make a donation to the Charity in lieu of the usual charges – all the solicitors are donating their time and advice to the Charity for free.

VALP Modifications Main Modifications (MMs) are amendments to the Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP). These have been drawn up by Buckinghamshire Council (BC) because the Inspector requested them following his consideration of the VALP at the examination in public in July 2018. MMs, affecting the future development of the RAF site at Halton, were discussed in April 2021, at a virtual meeting, to which Jonathan Clover, a resident, and others had been invited.

Jonathan commented on the need to ensure sustainability by providing appropriate new business and employment opportunities as well as appropriate infrastructure for the new housing development. At present there will only be a new primary school, community centre, and a small retail and services provision. Requests were made by him concerning: 1. encouraging the provision of employment and training uses in the area in existing buildings or facilities where possible

2. developing appropriate further educational opportunities 3. providing new bus routes to towns and villages in the area and expanding the times of services (including more weekend and evening services) These points reflect local opinions expressed in Wendover Neighbourhood Plan.

Jonathan said, "Here is a chance to create in an imaginative way a new community, building on the past heritage, existing businesses, and new opportunities afforded by, as examples, the green agenda and defence review." BC replied to say that there was sufficient employment land allocated in the VALP as a whole, and none was needed on the development site, although businesses could be established at the airfield (not part of the development site).

“People will just get used to the disruption!”

Nothing seems to be changing

HS2 plans appear to be ploughing ahead without a care in the world for the residents whose lives will be changed forever.

Irreparable mental health issues, fractured relationships and physical health concerns will become the norm as traffic disruption permeates all around us and incessant, irritating, and damaging noise pollution arrives with the trains.

It appears that that we will all have to just get accustomed to the disruption and that those living close to the line will just move away or simply get used to the noise!

What we’ve been doing

We have identified numerous reasons which prove HS2 train noise pollution will be worse than expectations defined in the Act, whereby the vast majority of homes in the Wendover assessment area could experience noise pollution above the limits.

We also have The Environment Agency to rely on, given their stated purpose “we work to create better places for people and wildlife, and support sustainable development”. This protection includes threats such as pollution and flooding so their role in approving Schedule 33 applications and as a statutory consultee in Schedule 17 Planning submissions is critical.

We remain incredulous that HS2/EKFB continue to push ahead, despite the reasonable, cost and time-saving mitigation solutions which we have provided. It appears there is little concern for the impact that this train will have on individuals, communities, the environment and the millions of wild creatures, whose lives are being changed forever.

We must continue to point out where things can be reasonably improved; it is never too late to intervene and make the necessary changes which can leave a lasting positive legacy for all those residing & working here, both now and in the future.

Evidence has been presented to HS2, but at time of going to press, we have received no response to our request to refute our analysis.

They have delayed the Wendover Dean Viaduct planning submission approvals for over a month until HS2 furnishes the relevant information in order to support their required due diligence.

• St Mary’s Church, Stoke Mandeville old village – Archaeological works have started exhuming the graveyard and the cemetery is to be relocated to a new site off Marsh Lane (now closed to 2026 just like the footpath closures to the south of Wendover). As with the find of a ‘Neolithic Woodhenge’ last summer, we expect there to be discoveries as specialists examine the remains from a graveyard which was

Q. Lorries. Reports of HS2 related HGV’s entering or passing through the village are increasing. Can you confirm that lorry movements are tracked and recorded and that HS2/EKFB/Fusion vehicles are identifiable as parliament expects? Is that data available for community audit?

A. EKFB have a VMBS (Vehicle Management Booking System) which tracks lorry movements along our works. This software allows us to allocate approved routes and set arrival times and even provides departure times based on real time traffic information. If a vehicle arrives on site which hasn’t complied with the route, the HS2 identifier isn’t visible or the vehicle isn’t correctly booked into that site, the vehicle is rejected. Unfortunately this data would not be available to the communities. If local residents do spot a vehicle which they

A. The identifier in the cab is currently an A4 sign which clearly displays HS2 so it’s identifiable that vehicle is on HS2 business.

They are controlled by the driver and they have to keep them displayed or they will be rejected from site. If however there are any targeted attacks by protesters on vehicles, the use of these identifiers will be reviewed under security measures.

Neither Buckinghamshire Council nor WPC feel that HS2 engagement is delivering on earlier promises.

I did come across another definition. The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause. So can I leave you to decide whether we are being “engaged” with or this latter definition - it’s a definition of propaganda - is nearer to the mark.

800 Trees Planted to offset Carbon This month, climate action Wendover would like to say a big Thank You to residents who volunteered their time during April to dig and plant 800 saplings.

The Woodland Trust supplied a mix of hazel, dog rose, crab apple and blackthorn, all native species and nut/berry producing that were planted around the perimeter of the old skate park.

As this hedging matures, it will contribute towards an increase in biodiversity, provide much needed food for insects and butterflies as well as sequester carbon from the atmosphere to help reduce Wendover’s Carbon Footprint.

HS2 and Wendover Dean Footpaths The Chiltern Society have reluctantly agreed to work with EKFB, the HS2 contractors, to manage changes to the footpath network during the construction process. Two of our long distance paths – the Chiltern Way and Chiltern Heritage Trail – cross the works, while the Chiltern Link runs close by. A degree of cooperation is necessary to keep these paths open and to keep walkers informed about the situation.

Initially, things started well - EKFB ‘community engagement’ held a meeting with the Society, before announcing what they were going to do. However, the HS2 act allows them almost unlimited powers within the act limits, and so we were in no position to negotiate. We were offered two (permanently manned) crossing points – one on WEN/37, which runs beside Bowood Lane, and another on GMI/2, near Havenfields – and a contribution towards the expense of rearranging the signs and waymarking for our paths. All other routes crossing the line between South Heath and Smalldean will be closed for around 5 years – an unsatisfactory

HS2 have powers to close paths outside the act limits (and Bucks have very limited grounds for objection) although notice must be given, but it seems that these closures have not so far been requested – so it is still possible to walk on the paths as far as the act limits, if you want to witness the destruction at close quarters.

Freemasons are supporting carers with advice, breaks and activities Freemasons are leading a project to help up to 33,000 adult, young and parent carers, with donations of more than £715,000.

According to Carers UK, the number of carers grew exponentially during the pandemic, reaching more than 13 million. The helping hand from the Freemasons is supporting them with essential items, life skills, counselling, crisis support, activities and breaks.

Approximately 20,000 unpaid carers are receiving access to crucial support online, funded by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), the governing body of the Freemasons.

The UGLE is also working to protect young carers, who are under increasing pressure as they support family members during lockdown.

In particular, the Freemasons project is providing 870 young carers with respite through activities and breaks, while 760 young carers are being provided with essential items and life skills. Elsewhere, almost 100 schools are receiving assistance to identify hidden young carers and provide support.

In total, more than 1,800 young carers are receiving advice, support and information.

In addition to their support for young carers, the Freemasons are providing funding for crisis support, advice and information to almost 3,000 adult carers. Meanwhile, the project is also assisting 1,050 parent carers with advice and support.

In Buckinghamshire, almost 2,000 young carers will be supported at school, to improve their wellbeing and reduce stress and isolation. The donation will fund the salaries and project costs of three support staff to work with schools in identifying and supporting young carers. The aim of the project is to find young people with previously ‘hidden’ caring responsibilities and raise awareness of their burden.

Dr David Staples, chief executive of the UGLE, said: “These have been very difficult times for everyone and especially for carers. With the donations, we are helping with training, counselling, support, mental and physical health, as well as activities to reduce stress.

This is one of the best months for visiting a local BBOWT reserve and seeing the wildlife of the Chilterns. Aston Clinton Ragpits reserve is famed for its orchids, Bacombe Hill has junipers and great views of the Vale, Weston Turville Reservoir offers level paths and lakeside spots to picnic while Dancersend has everything - woods, meadows, secret valleys and its own offering of unusual plants if you know where to look.

Club Corner Wendover Horticultural Society

Unless there are future snags, it looks hopeful that COVID restrictions will be lifted in June.

If that happens, the Wendover Horticultural Society will hold its first Thursday meeting since February 2020 on the first of July.

Confirmation will be in the form of posters nearer the date and an e-mail to members.

We decided to move our venue to give us space and it is to be at St Anne’s Hall, not the library. To fit in with them we will meet on the first Thursday of each month, at the usual time of 2.30pm. The speaker will be John Tyler, well known to us as he has given successful talks before. He will be talking about “Fungi”. For a few minutes before that we will hold a short AGM. Please support this first meeting, visitors would be warmly welcomed.

Station Commander's Coins

Congratulations to Mr Simon Clark and Mr Anthony (Tony) McKeever who were recently awarded a Station Commander's Coin for their exceptional teamwork.

Tony has worked for RAF Halton for over 30 years working in Barrack stores and Supply. His recent move to the Regional Print Centre (RPC) meant he had to learn new skills, including getting to grips different technologies and machinery. Tony has been a huge asset to RAF Halton and has remained helpful and proactive throughout his 30 years here.

Simon expertly guided and Tony in his new role, and taught him how to use all the new equipment, whilst continuing to supervise the department and ensure the Station continued to be supported.

Well done to them both, to Simon for his mentoring and management skills and Tony for his willingness to learn new skills and a completely new role. An excellent team effort!

Congratulations to Warrant Officer Hammond, Flight Sergeant Dent, Sergeant Berrecloth and Sergeant Loder who received the Station Commander's Coin in April.

As members of the RAF Halton Service Funds Internal Audit Board (SFIAB) they were presented with a Station Commander's Coin in recognition of the selfless work conducted to keep our Messes, Clubs and Associations financially healthy during the unprecedented times that the Covid-19 pandemic placed us in. Having Auditors to ensure that we comply with the rules that govern how we spend money is imperative; this is often a thankless task, but the SFIAB members have offered their time, advice, expertise and unwavering commitment.

Congratulations to Mr Hempstock who was awarded a Station Commander's Coin in April.

An Ex-RAF Warrant Officer (WO), Mr Hempstock has remained a retired member of the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess (WOSM) and has voluntarily given up much of his time to help with maintenance throughout the Mess; pruning bushes, watering plants and cutting the grass.

Recently, Mr Hempstock has also redecorated the bar, updated the fixtures and fittings, arranged for the photo section to produce crest stickers, researched new furniture for the bar, fixed the dishwasher, fixed the bar lighting, and has prepared the Anteroom for decoration; the list is endless! www.wendovernews.co.uk

Local Faces: Little Acorns Kindergarten Mel Armstrong (above) moved to Wendover with her family 20 years ago. Mel is the Manager of a much-loved early years setting on the school campus, Little Acorns Kindergarten.

This year, Mel and her team will be celebrating 30 years serving the Wendover community. Over the years, Little Acorns has evolved from a small pack-away pre-school to the thriving setting it is today.

In January 2020, Little Acorns was the first early years setting in Wendover to be inspected under the new Ofsted inspection framework. Mel said, “The new inspections were more rigorous than ever before and focused on our ability to provide quality education and care. We were delighted to be awarded Outstanding in All Areas and I couldn’t be more proud of this achievement.

“My team and I are firm believers in learning through play - watching a child’s face light up as they grasp a concept or learn a new skill is hugely rewarding. It’s wonderful to be able to play such a big part in a child’s development and all of the staff here are committed to providing a safe, happy, stimulating environment for every Little Acorn we welcome.”

Mel continued: “Every child who walks through our door is unique. We encourage children to become good citizens by respecting the diversity of their fellow preschoolers. We want them to develop caring attitudes and respect towards themselves, other children, and their wider community.

“I am always keen to share how we maintain

By the time you read this, the new Wendover Parish Council will be in place and a Chairman elected. The Councillors have been elected unopposed as there were too few to need an election. I was delighted to take up the post of Parish Clerk from 26 April 2021. I have joined the Parish Council at an interesting time: a new Council, a post-Covid world, HS2, the closure of RAF Halton and a climate emergency are going to give me the challenges that I thrive on.

Wendover Parish Council have seen a significant increase in anti-social behaviour Photos above show damage done to the Unknown and vandalism over the last few weeks.
