COLFAX,

2023 - 2024

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone back to Wesleyan Christian Academy. Our school continues to grow and thrive as we strive diligently to fulfill our mission which is to “partner with families by providing a biblically-based, college-preparatory education so that students will be equipped to serve Christ and influence the world” for God’s glory.

This Back to School Guide contains helpful information you need before starting school. Please be sure to read through the information provided.

I look forward to meeting our new families and getting to know our returning families better. I am humbled and honored that you have chosen our school to partner in your child’s academic, spiritual, and emotional goals. Our theme this year is “Blessed are the Merciful.” As Christians in the WCA community, may we never forget that God is merciful to us.

Mercy is who God is. “The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. . .“ (Exodus 34:6)

Mercy is what God does. “If God is for us, who can be against us?   He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32)

Mercy is what we need. “O, Lord, hear my voice! . . .If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?   But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.” (Psalm 130:3-4)

Our prayer this year is that our students will understand as bedrock truth riveted in their hearts, how God’s mercy is a reality that anchors us all into the life and death of Jesus Christ. As a school, having this focus on the mercy of God will, in turn, cause us to also be merciful toward others.

We look forward to the weeks and months ahead and are grateful for your partnership in Christian education. May God bless our faculty, students, and families over the coming school year!

Sincerely,

2023-2024 BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDE 2

IMMUNIZATIONS

All Wesleyan students must be up to date on immunizations by the first day of school. Please either email documentation to smoore@wcatrojans.org or drop off copies at the Main Academy Office.

If your child is a new TK - 12th grade student, or a new or returning kindergartner, 7th grader, or 12th grader, please make sure your child(ren)’s immunizations are up to date!! If they are not, please make plans to secure these immunizations as soon as possible.

NOTE: 12th graders must now have a meningococcal vaccination booster. Per the NCDHHS website, “A booster dose is required for individuals entering 12th grade or by 17 years of age, whichever comes first. The booster does not apply to individuals who entered 12th grade before August 1, 2021. If the first dose is administered on or after a child’s 16th birthday, a booster dose is NOT required. Individuals born before January 1, 2003, shall not be required to receive the meningococcal conjugate vaccine.”

STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM

In 2022, WCA introduced the Student Support Team, made up of student counselors and select administrators whose mission is to be available to students who need extra emotional, physical, or spiritual support for a season.

2023-2024 BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDE 5

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FOLLOW THE MATTHEW 18 PRINCIPLE?

In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus instructs his disciples on how to deal with conflict. “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

In this same light, when concerns arise at Wesleyan, we ask parents to follow the principle of Matthew 18:15-17, to bring any and all questions and concerns to the WCA employee most directly involved. If you have a question about a classroom action/procedure, please contact the teacher involved. If a satisfactory conclusion is not reached, then reach out to the appropriate principal. After contacting the teacher, principal, and Associate Head of School, the Head of School may be contacted if concerns have not been resolved.

STUDENT ACADEMIC SUPPORT (TK - 12TH GRADE)

We understand that all students learn differently and that God created each one fearfully and wonderfully in His image. Recognizing this, WCA provides the following services to meet students where they are academically and to bridge any existing educational gaps.

IN-CLASS ACCOMMODATIONS like preferential seating are always available for students who need minor accommodations to help them reach their fullest academic potential.

RESOURCE CLASSES are offered to students who may need just a bit of additional academic assistance in the subjects of Reading or Math (1st - 4th) or English and Math (5th - 12th). Our Resource Classes are pull-out classes that will occur during your student’s school day. There is an additional charge for these classes that is billed monthly.

THE ENRICHMENT CENTER provides quality, college-preparatory instruction from certified LD Teachers to students with mild to moderate diagnosed learning differences. Enrichment students need help in subject areas other than English and Math and need assistance beyond what Resource Classes can provide. Students can take as few as 1 core class or as many as 6 core classes in the Enrichment Center as it is fully integrated into the traditional K-12 Academy.

INTERVENTION/EXTENSION HOURS Each week, elementary students who have mastered a particular grade-level concept have the opportunity to work beyond their grade-level during a teacher-led, dedicated Extension hour during the school day. During the same time frame, elementary students who may need additional instruction on a grade-level concept have the option of revisiting that particular concept with a grade-level teacher during our Intervention hour.

SPEECH THERAPY is available for all K-12 students. Mrs. Tyler Wilson, Speech and Language Therapist specializes in pragmatic, conversational language skills, auditory processing disorders, phonological processing, visualizations of verbal language, and diagnostics. She offers these services at a reduced rate to Wesleyan families, typically scheduled during your child’s school day. To learn more, please contact Mrs. Wilson at twilson@wcatrojans.org

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

As Wesleyan parents, we want you to be an integral part of our school family. Please consider getting involved in one of the following organizations and/or talking to your student’s homeroom teacher or other parents about how you can serve your student’s school. In August, you’ll receive a Volunteer Form to indicate your interests. Please return it to your child’s homeroom teacher or the academy office. We will reach out to you with opportunities that may interest you.

MOMS IN PRAYER

Join a powerful group of women who meet regularly to pray for our school, teachers, and students. These faithful prayer warriors would love to add you to their ranks.

ANNUAL GIFT GIVING (AGG) VOLUNTEERS

Each fall, Wesleyan conducts the Annual Gift Giving (AGG) Fundraising Campaign which raises funds over and above our operational expenses for the benefit of our students. The AGG Planning Committee or Silent Auction Committee is a great way to get involved!

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO)

Wesleyan’s PTO helps develop a strong relationship between our students’ homes and our school. PTO members plan on-campus events like August Open Houses; PTO Fun Festival; and Teacher Appreciation Week.

PATRONS OF THE PERFORMING ARTS

Our Patrons of the Performing Arts support our vocal, instrumental, and theater students by volunteering during our Winter and Spring Choral Awards, High School Musicals, and Fall Drama.

TROJAN BOOSTER CLUB

Parents who serve on our Trojan Booster Club help support Wesleyan’s 38 athletic teams, student-athletes, coaches, and parents. If you enjoy promoting school spirit and Christian character on and off the athletic field, this is for you!

HARRIS TEETER’S “TOGETHER IN EDUCATION”

The Together in Education program helps to raise funds for Wesleyan by linking your VIC card with our school code, #2098, every August. Once your card is linked, WCA will receive a percentage of all Harris Teeter brand purchases you make during the academic school year.

You can add money to your family’s Flik account by logging into your Family Portal, then clicking on Financial. Under the Prepay Accounts section, click on Add Funds under your lunch account. You can link your account to a credit or debit card for a small fee, or you can link it directly to your checking account. Once you reach a minimum of a $10.00 balance, you will receive an automated email letting you know you need to add funds to your child’s lunch account. Please note that students with a significant balance will be limited in what they can purchase for lunch.

DEVELOPMENT

To assist us in providing the very best education possible, we ask that you prayerfully consider giving to Wesleyan in the following areas.

ANNUAL GIFT GIVING (AGG) Gifts to the Annual Gift Giving campaign support special projects that enhance a student’s experience at Wesleyan through a wide variety of academic and extracurricular programming. All students from the Early Education Center through 12th grade benefit from AGG.

FINANCIAL AID (TK - 12TH GRADE) Each year, approximately 160 financial aid awards are made that enable students to attend Wesleyan. The amount of money that families qualify to receive is more than double the money available to award through financial aid. Without the support of generous donors like you, many families might have to withdraw from Wesleyan.

FACULTY ENDOWMENT Wesleyan’s faculty endowment fund is used to honor innovation, provide special recognition, and provide professional development opportunities to our amazing teachers.

THE LEGACY SOCIETY The Legacy Society has been established at Wesleyan Christian Academy as a means to provide special recognition of those individuals who have included us in their estate planning.

UPDATE ON OUR SANDY RIDGE CAMPUS In His perfect timing, the Lord provided 71 acres in the “Heart of the Triad” at the corner of Sandy Ridge Road and Johnson Street. This new property has been a blessing, freeing us from previous space constraints to allow us to seek God’s direction for expansion and additional educational opportunities.

The first phase of development required obtaining the land in 2010. The second phase, beginning in 2012, included the grading and installing infrastructure for the outdoor recreational areas.. This phase also included zoning, architectural renderings, engineering studies, etc.

While the end goal is to build a new school on the Sandy Ridge Campus, we’ve been blessed to be able to build athletics facilities and leadership venues for the benefit of our students and families thanks to the generosity of Wesleyan donors. Today, we are grateful to have a beautiful campus with a state-of-the-art baseball complex, softball stadium, open-air pavilion, playground, grill pad, soccer field, cross country course, and leadership ropes course.

There are more exciting opportunities coming for the Sandy Ridge Campus in the year ahead, and we look forward to sharing them with you soon. If you would like more information about being a donor, please contact Suzanne Cook, Development Officer (scook@wcatrojans.org), Chris Glover, Development Officer (cglover@wcatrojans.org), or Mason Garner, Development Coordinator (mgarner@wcatrojans.org).

BACK TO SCHOOL GUIDE 9 2023-2024

SCHOOL SAFETY & SECURITY

The safety and security of your children is our most important priority. Over the years, Wesleyan has consistently updated our safety protocols to help ensure campus security. As of July 2023, ALL measures below are part of our 20232024 Campus Security Plan.

NEW / UPDATED FOR 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR

• A Campus Security Coordinator, Steve Myers, has been hired to oversee the safety and security of our dual campus.

• Security cameras are located and recording at every entrance, throughout exterior parking lots, internal school hallways, and stairwells.

• External speakers have been positioned around campus to ensure communication outside of the building.

• Bullet resistant film will be installed on windows at various locations on the Centennial Campus this fall thanks to the generosity of Wesleyan donors.

• Security keypads have been installed for both auditorium balcony doors.

• All auditorium doors are being replaced early this fall semester to enable auditorium doors to be locked if necessary.

NEW! STUDENT ACCESS / ID BADGES

• Controlled access to our building is critical to the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. To accomplish this, all outside doors will remain locked and require a school-issued ID badge for entrance (by swiping) during the school day.

• All Middle and High School students will be issued a WCA ID badge with a lanyard on the first day of school. No photographs or school info will be included on the ID badges.

• Elementary teachers will manage building entry for their classes during the day. Elementary students will receive ID badges from their teachers daily for the purpose of media center use and personalized computer login. NOTE: No photographs or school info will be included on ID badges.

• We have established a new 2023-2024 WCA Facility Access Schedule that aligns with badge use that will be shared with students and parents on the first day of school.

NEW! PARENT & VISITOR SIGN IN

• Parents and visitors should enter the building through the Main Academy Office, which is accessible via Entrance “C” off of N. Centennial Street. The office entrance is under canopy “A,” which is closest to our soccer field.

• Parents and visitors must be buzzed in via the Main Academy Office personnel. Please prepare for your ID to be run through our security system. A Wesleyan-provided Visitor’s Pass must be worn while on campus, and visitors must be accompanied by a staff member.

NEW / UPDATED IN 2022-2023

• Two High Point Police Officers are on campus each school day between 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM, with police vehicles parked on the Centennial and Eastchester sides of campus.

• All faculty and staff have ongoing critical incident training, and twenty-two (22) staff members have been identified as “Emergency Responders.” These faculty and staff members carry walkie-talkies for quick communication.

PLACE PRIOR TO 2022

• Police Pull-Stations have been installed throughout the Centennial Street campus.

• The High Point Police Department often uses Wesleyan’s campus for critical incident training after school hours.

• All classrooms lock from the inside and are equipped with door window coverings.

• Exterior security checks take place nightly.

• Fire drills, tornado drills, and critical incident drills are scheduled throughout the school year.

• Five (5) Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are located across campus.

• Five (5) Epi-Pens are located across campus.

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE. Cameras are located at every entrance, in every classroom, hallway, and on playgrounds.

LIMITED ACCESS POINTS. All outside doors remain locked and require a passcode for entrance.

ROUTINE DRILLS. We practice routine fire, tornado and critical incident drills.

STAFF TRAINING. In addition to routine background checks, our staff are trained and certified in CPR and First Aid. For additional academy security information, see page 10 of this Guide.

FOOD SERVICE FULL-DAY

The Early Education Center at Wesleyan Christian Academy has partnered with Flik Hospitality Group to provide nutritious and child-friendly meals to your children. Each day, Flik provides a morning and afternoon snack, along with a wellbalanced lunch to our Early Education Students. These meals are prepared in our on-site kitchen and delivered to your child’s classroom. The cost of these snacks and meals is included in your Early Education tuition and fees.

ALLERGY AWARE

Wesleyan Christian Academy is also an Allergy Aware facility. This means that our kitchen is equipped with an allergyfriendly preparation area and that allergen-free menus and vegetarian options are offered on a daily basis. Faculty and staff, with direct contact to students, are also well trained on food allergies, sensitivities, and potential reactions. If your son or daughter has been diagnosed with a food allergy or sensitivity, please make sure the Early Education Office has this information on file.

NEW STUDENT ADMISSIONS & CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT

ADMISSION FOR NEW STUDENTS

Did you know that almost 90% of our new families come to Wesleyan because of what they have heard from our current families? As Wesleyan parents, you are an essential part of our recruitment efforts.

We encourage you to talk with your friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family about why you chose Wesleyan for your children and share the impact our faculty and staff have had on your family and your children. You are welcome to invite prospective families to attend an Admissions Preview Day or to schedule a private tour by reaching out to our Admissions Office at (336) 884-3333 or admissions@wcatrojans.org. The following Preview Days have been scheduled for the coming school year:

TK - 12TH PREVIEW DAY

Wednesday, OCT 25, 2023

9:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.

Farlow Kennedy Center

TK - 4TH PREVIEW DAY

Sunday, NOV 12, 2023

3:00 - 5:00 P.M.

CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT FOR RETURNING STUDENTS

Wesleyan Christian Academy follows a continuous enrollment process to re-enroll current students for the following school year. This means that all current students, eligible to return, will be automatically re-enrolled each year until graduation and their account billed the continuous enrollment fee on February 15th of each year. If your circumstances change and you do not plan on returning to Wesleyan, simply submit our online School Withdrawal Form by February 1, and you will not be charged the nonrefundable continuous enrollment fee.

AFFORDING TUITION (TK - 12TH GRADE)

Wesleyan recognizes that some families may need financial assistance in order to provide a quality, Christian-based, college-preparatory education for their children. This is why Wesleyan Christian Academy participates in all of the following tuition assistance programs:

• FACTS Tuition Assistance

• North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship Grant (OSG)

• North Carolina Educational Savings Accounts (ESA)

TUITION PAYMENTS AND DRAFT QUESTIONS

Things come up all the time. If you have any questions about your tuition payments, monthly draft deadlines, etc., our Student Accounting Office is here to help. You can contact Maria Graver in Student Accounts at (336) 884-3333 or by emailing mgraver@wcatrojans.org.

You may find more information about each of the above tuition assistance programs on our admissions web page under “Affording Tuition” (www.wcatrojans.org/apply-to-wesleyan/affording-tuition).
