The CHERISH Project: Archaeological excavations at Ferriter’s Castle and Promontory Fort.
The Discovery Programme: Centre for Archaeology and Innovation Ireland has being carrying out archaeological excavations at Ferriter’s Castle and Promontory Fort in west Kerry. The work is being carried out as part of the CHERISH Project, an EU-funded collaboration that aims to raise awareness and understanding of the past, present and near-future impacts of climate change, storminess, and extreme weather events on the rich cultural heritage of the Irish and Welsh regional seas and coast. Sandra Henry, Lead Research Archaeologist, CHERISH Project said “One of the common coastal site types that is being severely impacted and altered by climate change is promontory forts. This is why we decided to carry out in-depth investigations through excavation into the archaeology and environment of Ferriter’s Promontory Fort and Castle. The castle is in its current state of ruin due to storm events, while cliff collapse and erosion of archaeological features such as hut sites is visible along the edge of this headland. The excavation will provide insights into this sites functionality, periods of usage and the changing environment of this headland”. Chief Executive Officer at the Discovery Programme Dr John O’Keeffe said “The dig at Ferriter’s Castle and Promontory Fort will help us to better understand the impact on climate change on this specific site, and on sites more widely on the Irish and Welsh coastlines. It will also connect to other disciplines that are looking at how climate change will continue to impact upon our landscapes and lives for the future.”
Campáil Teach an Aragail Dingle Oratory House Camping
This prehistoric fort is one of 95 coastal promontory forts in County Kerry, and like many other promontory forts it is being heavily impacted by erosion. The CHERISH project has included this fascinating site in order to learn more the site itself and the site type in general. The promontory fort features a series of banks and ditches that form an outer and inner set of defences. The team will look at these defences during excavation to understand how and when they were constructed, as well as hoping to learn something about the people who built them and lived in this fort. The team will also be looking at how the condition of the masonry ruins of Ferriter’s Castle are being affected over time. The team have already carried out a walk-over survey, detailed terrain modelling through drone mapping, and geophysical survey to look below the ground surface using both magnetic gradiometry and electrical resistivity surveys. The results of these surveys have guided our plans for excavation, identifying possible archaeological features on and under the ground. In the fifteenth or sixteenth century, reuse of the fort occurred when the Anglo-Norman Ferriter family constructed a castle (a 4-5 storey tower house) on the inner bank of the outer defences. The castle has been recorded in high resolution by a 3D laser scan survey. This provides an exact record of the castle at the time of survey and allows the team to monitor any changes that occur to the castle. Excavations in this part of the fort will focus on the rectangular house sites, thought to be associated with the later medieval activity on the site. The CHERISH team are very grateful to Dennis Curran for granting permission to work on his land, his friendliness and generosity during survey work, and for the wealth of local knowledge he has shared with the team. Thanks also to the Ferriter Family who have also extended a warm welcome to the team allowing them to use their fields and access routes.

The Last Black and Tan Killed in Kerry New book on the Ballymacandy Ambush of June 1921 The last Black and Tan to die in Kerry during the War of Independence lay bleeding from a bullet wound to the neck for several hours in a cottage near Milltown before he succumbed to his injuries. Constable John Stratton McCormack was mortally wounded in an IRA ambush at Ballymacandy between Milltown and Castlemaine on 1st June 1921 in an attack involving dozens of IRA members from midKerry, Castlegregory and Tralee.

A new book from Milltown historian and author, Owen O’Shea, follows many years of research into the events at Ballymacandy which occurred just six weeks before the end of the War of Independence and which claimed the lives of three RIC officers and two members of the notorious Black and Tans. The ambush involved IRA, Fianna Éireann and Cumann na mBan units from Milltown, Keel, Callinafercy, Kiltallagh, and senior Kerry No. 1 Brigade members from Castlegregory and Tralee who had spent months in a hideout in Keel on the Dingle Peninsula. Among the five killed was RIC sergeant James Collery, a father of nine children who lived at the Square in Milltown and who died at the hands of those who were his neighbours, as the War of Independence in mid-Kerry reached a bloody climax. Ballymacandy: The Story of a Kerry Ambush, published by Merrion Press, is the definitive account of one of the most important events in the Anglo-Irish War in Kerry and includes extracts from diaries, IRA pension applications, private correspondence and previously unpublished accounts from local IRA leaders like Dan Mulvihill, Jack Flynn and Tom O’Connor, who was officer commanding on the day. It describes the events in the lead-up to the ambush and how the local IRA were plotting a major assault on the Crown Forces for several months. “This was a story I grew up with and I always wanted to know more about what happened at Ballymacandy, near my homeplace, on 1 June 1921. I have tried to tell this story from many perspectives, that of the IRA gunmen, the widow of the RIC constable, the hard-nosed District Inspector, the terrified civilians of my home village, the women of Cumann na mBan, the priest who prayed into the ears of the dying, the IRA’s informer within the police, and the schoolboys who watched as the remains were loaded onto carts,” said Owen. “One of my most significant findings from the British Archives was an attempt by the military authorities to have the local doctor, Daniel Sheehan, struck off the medical register for allegedly failing to provide Constable McCormack with adequate care as he lay dying, and despite reassurances that medical aid was on the way. You get the sense that the Crown Forces were looking to blame anyone but themselves for their failing military strategy at this time.” Ballymacandy offers an insight into the planning and execution of an IRA ambush, the critical and overlooked role of Cumann na mBan, the dangers faced by the policemen in Ireland at the time, the motivations of the men who lay in wait on the roadside, and the villagers who were, unusually and remarkably, saved the brutal reprisals which had become synonymous with the dreaded Black and Tans in 1921.

The IRA ambushers included prominent figures from the revolutionary period in Kerry including future TDs, Jack Flynn and Johnny ‘Machine Gun’ Connor, as well as Tadhg Brosnan from Castlegregory, Jerry and Billy Myles from Tralee, and Dan ‘Bally’ Keating, who died aged 105 in 2007, the oldest surviving veteran of the Anglo-Irish War. “I hope the book will contribute to a wider knowledge and understanding of these events during such a pivotal period in our collective history,” said Owen.

Why Summertime is the Best Time to Lose Weight! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Months of lockdowns, working from home and countless versions of banana bread are just some of the reasons why many people have gained weight during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is estimated that about a third of Irish people put on some extra pounds since lockdowns began last year and according to the Covid-19 Food Study carried out by UCD Institute of Food and Health in collaboration with Dublin City University, most notably those aged 25 to 44-years-old, changed their eating and alcohol habits much more than expected. Bottom line, a significant number of people simply ate more, drank more and exercised less during the restrictions. Now, as the country opens up and Summer is in full swing, we have a great opportunity to put some of those wrongs to right and take advantage of the seasonal shift that favours healthier eating, increased outdoor activity and a more optimistic outlook. If you are one of those who are struggling to close the button on last year’s jeans do not beat yourself up or talk negatively about your body. In all fairness, we all did the best we could during an extraordinary time. Park the stinking thinking! Instead of useless rhetoric set about making some positive changes in your diet and lifestyle that encourage your body to regain its mojo and connect to your natural inclination to be a well-functioning human being. Summer helps us in many ways to eat better, move more and engage with the energy of the season – possibly more noticeable than any other season in the year. Rising earlier, being more active and eating plenty of fresh, nutrient-dense foods are the cornerstone of any realistic weight loss plan. Instead of embarking on another restrictive fad diet, think about the ways you can add seasonal wholefoods, outdoor activities and more fun time to your every day. If you are serious about shedding the Covid stone, make a realistic goal and plan your strategy. It is a good idea to share your action plan with somebody and invite them to do it with you. This helps keep you and your buddy accountable and determined as your go along. Be inspired by the Summer for meal creativity, for new ways to stay active and plan to fill the longer days with healthy pursuits that connect with the Joy of the season. You will not only lose the weight gained during lockdown, but you establish daily habits into your day that will stand to you no matter what life throws at you. Take time to work on your mindset and the rest will flow nicely and with ease. Summer food is colourful, diverse and abundant. A good target for adults is to eat 7-9 cups of seasonal fruit and vegetables a day. Use a 250ml cup for measuring. Think of ways to include fruit and veg from different colour groups – reds, yellows, orange, greens, purple/blues and at least one from the cruciferous group of veg (chard, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage). It is well established that the diversity of nutrients from a rainbow-style diet have a positive impact on your physical and emotional health, improving immunity, energy levels and providing a greater sense of wellbeing. The carbohydrates from a broader supply of whole fruit and vegetables, may lessen the need for refined grains and other processed foods associated with weight gain. Meat and fish dishes in Summer are quick to cook – think of stir-fry, grill-cooking and BBQ for ideas, using healthy fats in marinades, dressings and trimmings to bring your Summertime meals together. Another great feature of the Summer is the opportunity to get into cold water – whether it is in the sea, cooler shower temperatures or even just giving your face a good splash of cold water, immersing yourself in cold water strengthens the Vagus nerve, which connects the gut to the brain and vice-versa. This two-way superhighway plays a crucial role in weight control, mood, appetite and behaviour. It is said that the Vagus nerve is 2the defender and protector of the body against ALL enemies”. Farming News Louis Murchan PIONEERING FARM ENVIRONMENT SURVEY PILOT ANNOUNCED In recognition of the unique and strong link between agriculture and biodiversity, the Farm Environmental Study was announced, supporting Biodiversity measurement at farm level. This pilot Farm Environmental Study (FES) will generate a database of baseline habitat and biodiversity data at farm level and will allow for a comprehensive study of farm habitats and biodiversity and a baseline for future targeting of agri-environmental schemes and measures. The Pilot Stage of FES will focus on the development methods and the up-skilling of farmers and advisors in the roll out of farm level habitat surveys on approximately 8000 farms. The programme will provide the farmer with an inventory of habitats, biodiversity and environmental information about his/her own farm. This will provide farmers with an inventory of habitats, biodiversity and environmental information about their farm(s), which will be presented to them, as part of the knowledge transfer element in order to educate and empower the farmer to farm in a way that is sensitive to nature on the individual farm. Each farmer will receive €200 for participation. Advisors will be trained to the deliver this programme, the environmental training programme will ensure professional delivery of the pilot and will include habitat and biodiversity training as well as updated IT and mapping skills which will be transferrable to other schemes. BEE HEALTH ON WORLD BEE DAY There was plenty of activity at the DAFM Bee Health laboratory at the Backweston Campus in Co Kildare this week, as part of the celebrations of World Bee Day on 20th May. DAFM provides a bee health service, free of charge, facilitating the early detection of pests and pathogens which is key to maintaining healthy stock of bees in Ireland. DAFM’s Bee Health service also operates the Sentinel Apiary Programme along with volunteer beekeepers throughout Ireland. The aim of the programme is to ensure the early detection of three exotic pests, Small Hive beetle (SHB), Tropilaelaps spp. and the Asian Hornet. DAFM’s Free Bee Health diagnostic service/Network supports the purchase of bees and informs the public about the environmental role that bees play in maintaining Irish biodiversity and crop production. It also helps to connect DAFM with other departments and agencies, researchers, stakeholders, the farming community and the general public. Already, it is clear the changes will lead to a shift towards more environmentally-friendly farming and redirection of Irish agriculture for

decades to come. Most Irish attention will focus on eco-schemes and on “internal convergence” – a process to redistribute and flatten the value of CAP payments for farmers with entitlement values above the national average to farmers below the national average. The schemes will see between 20 and 30 per cent of CAP “Pillar 1” funding ring-fenced for environmental measures. The agreed figure, in effect, reduces basic payments to farmers by an equivalent amount. This is in a scenario where direct payments make up 100 per cent of income in some sectors. There will be an obligation to carry out environmental measures, potentially at an additional cost. Member states support the application of a 75 per cent figure, whereas the European Parliament is demanding 100 per cent, known as “full flattening”. Again this will have major implications for direct farm payments; notably to farmers with above average incomes who make up the backbone of Irish agriculture. This means Irish farmers with high entitlement unit values could be facing quite a drop in income. The impact of this however could be lessened by government intervention. This can be achieved by incorporation of agri-environmental and ecological elements and the addition of carbon sequestering mechanism such as forestry promotion and soil carbon capturing. 10-POINT PLAN FOR SUCCESSFUL RESEEDING Regular successful reseeding is an essential part of livestock farming to maintain support for high levels of milk and meat production. But to maximise the long-term performance of new grassland, reseeding must be carried out correctly. Reseeding represents a significant financial investment, and you gain the most benefit from it when the reseeding process is well managed. Now is a good time to review your approach. Compare it against our 10-point action plan and think about improvements you could make to your current reseeding strategy. 1. Soil test for successful reseeding - Before you start, test your soils to identify any soil nutrient deficiencies, focusing on pH, P and K levels. To boost future grassland performance, create a targeted input plan to address deficiencies highlighted by these tests. Take soil samples which best represent the true make-up of a field, avoiding areas where large numbers of livestock congregate, such as next to hedges. 2. Kill off the old sward - After soil testing, prepare to reseed with a ‘clean slate’. Create the maximum amount of room for new, higher performance grass varieties in the sward by taking out inefficient old pasture and weeds. Spray with glyphosate to kill off the old sward, using the prescribed amounts of product and water. Using the correct proportions moves the glyphosate from the tips of the plant, deep down into the root, ensuring a good kill. 3. Prepare the seedbed - Give old, dead grass plenty of time to decompose properly after spraying, before beginning cultivation to maximise seed to soil contact and provide the best chance for successful germination. Focus on creating a fine, firm and fertile seedbed. Select the cultivation method to best suit your soil type and crop rotation. Ploughing is a popular choice as it can level-up ground, improve drainage and create a finer seed bed. But minimum cultivation methods are better suited where ground has stone or rock near the soil surface. 4. Select the best grass varieties - The grass varieties you choose need to suit your farm type and best meet your requirements. Ask yourself how the reseeded field will be used. Some perennial ryegrass varieties are better suited for grazing, others for silage. Select varieties from the DAFM recommended list and 2021 Pasture Profit Index. These are proven under Irish conditions and give you access to the very latest genetics. The difference in performance between the highest and lowest ranked varieties is substantial. 5. Sowing grass seed - To optimise germination rates and ensure successful reseeding, aim to sow grass seed at a depth no greater than 10-15mm at a rate of 14kg/ac. Farms in derogation must include 1kg/ac coated clover (0.6kg/ac uncoated clover seed). 6. Roll well after sowing - Rolling is an important piece of the reseeding ‘puzzle’, as consolidating the seedbed gives good soil to seed contact. This allows seed to absorb water from the soil and prevents moisture loss during periods of hot weather. 7. Apply fertiliser pre-emergence. - Once rolling has been carried out, refer back to your soil test results and input plan. Apply lime and fertiliser to
achieve an optimum P and K index of 3 and pH level of 6.2 – 6.5. A general rule of thumb is to spread three bags of 10:10:20 (nitrogen: phosphate: potassium) fertiliser and 2t lime/ac for new grassland. 8. Spray post-emergence - Problem weeds germinate as a result of soil disturbance during reseeding. Even at low populations, they compete for light, water and space, so easily impact grassland productivity. Dealing with them is much cheaper and quicker when they are young, so spray five to six weeks after sowing. Where clover is included in a grass mix, use a clover-friendly spray or be prepared to stitch in clover at a later date. Since October 2020, it has no longer been possible to buy clover-safe herbicides and any already on-farm, must be used by October 2021.

9. Monitor for pest attack - Juvenile grass swards are particularly susceptible to pest attacks. These can cause significant levels of damage and diminish long-term performance. Monitor pest damage and take immediate remedial action if required. Leatherjackets, slugs and frit fly are the most common culprits. 10. Graze new reseeds - Once a new ley has established, graze it lightly to encourage thickening and tillering. Check if the grass is ready to graze by pulling at a handful of grass leaves. If the plant and roots pull up, it is too early, but if only the leaves tear, the grass is ready to graze. Graze young reseeds regularly at low covers. If you want to add to this, add a little Dingle goat’s cheese and stir in all trough just before serving. Hope you all love it. Serves 4 Time 15-20 minutes Ingredients 250g pasta (ideally linguine but use your favourite pasta) 1 shallot, finely diced 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 courgettes, ends cut off and courgette cut into ribbons (use a vegetable peeler to make these)

150ml cream 1 lemon, zested and juiced handful of pine nuts, toasted on a dry pan for 2 minutes small bunch of mint, chopped extra virgin olive oil parmesan, for grating over the pasta salt and pepper Method Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted water and according to the packet instructions. When you taste the pasta, it should have a little bite (al dente). While the pasta is cooking you can be preparing the courgettes and sauce. Put a pan on over a medium heat, add a little oil and add the shallot and garlic. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, add the courgettes and cream. Cook this for about 3-4 minutes (the courgettes will cook quickly). Give this a stir, add in the lemon juice and zest. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Add in the pine nuts and mint. Strain the pasta and keep back a little bit of the pasta water (about half a ladle) add this to the courgette and cream mixture. Add in the strained pasta. Mix this all together and place in bowls. Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil over each bowl and add plenty of parmesan to the top. Bain Taitneamh As !!

Kerry and formerly Tyrellspass, Co. Westmeath passed away peacefully on 12th May in the wonderful care of the staff at Ocean View, Nursing Home, Camp, beloved wife of the late Jim, dearest mother of Gerard, Moira, Avril and the late Martin, sister of Nancy, Gabriel and the late Joe & Frances and mother-in-law of the late Bridget. Sadly missed by her loving family, her grandchildren Charlene, Stacey, Jamie & James, great granddaughter Kyrah, nephews, nieces, sons-in-law Vincent & John, relatives, neighbours and friends. Postmistress in Camp Post Office for many years, Betty gave a wonderful and dedicated service to Camp and to the wider community in West Kerry. She had a great sense of humour and there was always laughter and fun in the shop. Memories of a bygone era, pre technology come to mind too, when Betty and her family delivered telegrams round our village often late at night. Mostly news from family abroad, the message was always delivered with the utmost sensitivity. In a socially distanced Guard of Honour Camp Community lined the road at Camp Post Office as Bettys funeral cortege passed by on Saturday to Camp Cemetary, a final farewell to Betty, who was highly regarded and respected in the community.

Michael Fitzgerald born at the foot of Mount Brandon in the village of Castlegregory is the main organiser and has a special interest in the hisory of St. Brendan. St Brendan’s early life - He was baptized at Tubrid, near Ardfert, by Saint Erc. For five years he was educated under the care of Saint Ita, who is known as “the Brigid of Munster”, and he then went on to complete his studies under Saint Erc, who ordained him as a priest in the year 512. Between the years 512 and 530 St Brendan built monastic sites at Ardfert and at the foot of Mount Brandon. After these years he is supposed to have set out on his famous seven-year voyage for Paradise. He was known as St. Brendan, The Navigator. ANNASCAUL ALLOTMENTS Lovely afternoon at the Open Day and Sale at Annascaul Allotments on Sunday 16th May. Congratulations Noel and all on a wonderful community project. As was customary for newly ordained Priests Fr. Ashe was sent to another part of the world arriving in Melbourne in September of that year. Fr. Martins, Uncle Fr. Tom Ashe RIP native of Aughills, also ministered in the Diocese of Melbourne from 1934 - 1971. There is a great tradition down through the centuries of Kerry Priests travelling to other parts of the world to serve the Catholic Church Mission. Congratulations Fr. Small Changes: Pollinators
This week’s article has been informed by a beautifully made and informative documentary called Plean B, which was aired on TG4 to help raise awareness of World Bee Day on the 20th of May. It highlighted the plight of pollinating insects in Ireland and the incredible work being done around the country, led by scientists Dr. Úna Fitzpatrick and Dr. Jane Stout, who voluntarily devised and promote a plan to enable pollinators to ‘survive and thrive’ in Ireland. People often think of bees in terms of the honey bee but there are over 20 000 species of bee on the planet. Ireland is home to 98 species of native wild bees (21 bumblebee species and 77 solitary bees) in addition to the honey bee. While nectar is the immediate reward (and is used by honey bees to make honey), bees also collect or feed directly on pollen as it is the primary source of protein for them and their larvae (honey bees make bee bread with pollen!). Whether a species collects pollen or just gets coated in it, the bees end up transferring it from plant to plant, unwittingly aiding pollination. Bees are undoubtedly the poster child of pollinators but hoverflies (180 species in Ireland) arguably pollinate more plants as they move between flowers more frequently searching for nectar and pollen. Butterflies, in addition to many species of wasps, beetles, moths and flies, are also very important pollinators. Over three quarters of wild plants (including many trees) and most agriculturally important fruit and vegetables benefit from insect pollination. The quantity and diversity of pollinating insects is however in serious decline due to habitat loss, monoculture, pesticide use and climate change. Scientists have recorded a 76% decrease in flying insects over the past 30 years. Over a third of Irelands bees are threatened with extinction and over 20% of hoverflies are endangered. This threatens the sustainability of our food chains and the reduction in the biodiversity of wild plants and trees affects all terrestrial insects, mammals and birds. The seriousness of the situation compelled Dr. Úna Fitzpatrick (Senior ecologist within the National Biodiversity Data Centre) and Dr. Jane Stout (Professor of Botany in TCD) to co-found the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan in 2015, one of the first initiatives of its type in the world. The first plan covered the period of 2015-2020 and produced good practice guides for individuals and groups such as farmers, county councils, businesses, sports clubs, schools and faith communities. The unique structure, evidence based approach and cost effectiveness of the initiative has received tremendous support from the public and a vast range of organisations across the country. It has also influenced the development of similar plans in many European countries. A second five year phase from 2021-2025 has just been launched, proposing over 180 actions to promote biodiversity.
the seeds of a very invasive and herbicide resistant grass species called Blackgrass have been found in some wildflower mixes on the Irish market (the control of this weed in Britain alone costs £400 million annually) . The spread of Blackgrass would have devastating consequences for the tillage industry in addition to out-competing many native wild plants. If you would like wildflowers to bloom in your garden the easiest and cheapest option is to stop mowing. In the case of long-flowering meadows which are cut once a year, make sure to lift or remove the clippings to help reduce the fertility of the soil as this encourages wildflower growth and diversity naturally over time. If, however, you really like the look of wildflower seed mixes and wish to grow them, make sure they are a certified Irish organic mix. 3. Don’t use or at least reduce use of pesticides – Pesticides, especially a group called neonicotinoids, are implicated in the decline of pollinators and bees in particular. Even though three of the most used neonicotinoids are banned in the EU since 2018 (clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiacloprid), they are long lasting in the environment. They have been found at high concentrations in the pollen and nectar of wildflowers near treated crops and have been detected in over 70% of tested Irish honey (not at concentrations that are dangerous to humans). Furthermore, as these pesticides have not been banned in many other countries including the USA and China, the nectar and pollen of plants grown from imported seeds and bulbs (which are often treated with a pesticide drench to deter greenfly etc. when the plant grows) contain traces of neonicotinoids. When purchasing bulbs in particular, check that they have not been treated (especially plants that pollinators love such as crocus, snowdrops and alliums). 4. If you are an avid gardener choose pollinator friendly ornamental plants. For example, daffodils, tulips, petunias, bizzy lizzy and geraniums have virtually no pollen or nectar. On the other hand, single flowered dahlia, crocus, aster, lavender, cosmos, and wallflowers are pollen and nectar rich. Buy local honey- while the honey bee is not an endangered species, any actions taken to improve its fortunes will improve the fate of all pollinators. Buying local honey, supports local beekeepers who try to ensure there are rich nectar and pollen sources available for their bees. Buying local honey is also a small but sustainable way to support the local economy. The central message of the pollinator plan is that small actions make a big difference. Here are a few of the simple and effective actions that can be implemented. 1. Don’t mow- reducing the frequency that you mow your lawn to once every four or six weeks allows flowers like dandelions, red and white clover, birds foot trefoil and self-heal to naturally pop up and bloom. These native wild flowers provide the nutrients that insects need. Allowing a strip or verge to grow into long-flowering meadow if you have the space (cutting just once a year in September) provides food and shelter for pollinators and a bank of south facing bare soil provides nesting sites for solitary bees. If you are worried about the lawn/area looking unkempt (especially for B &B owners etc.) then consider mowing a thin strip near kerbs or put up a sign informing the public that the land is being managed for pollinators. 2. Don’t set wildflower seed mixes – This sounds counter intuitive but most packets of wildflower seed mixes are made up of imported wild flower seeds and most are non-native flowers. Senior: Our Senior Team will compete in Division 3B against St. Senans, Laune Rangers, Currow, Brosna and Duagh. The first game on the 12th/13th of June sees our seniors travel to North Kerry to play St Senans, with our first Senior match on the new surface at Paddy Burke Memorial Park to follow the week after against our neighbours Laune Rangers. Then Currow will visit us in round 3 before a trip to Brosna with a home fixture against Duagh to finish off the group games. In Division 3 there are two groups A & B, the bottom two teams will be relegated and the 2nd
last teams in each group will play off to decide the third relegated team. The top team in each group will play off to decide the group champions (both will be promoted) and the 2nd place teams will play of to decide the third club that is promoted. Junior: Our Junior Team will compete in Division 6B against Kilcummin B, Dr Crokes C, Kenmare Shamrocks B, Valentia Young Islanders and Tousist. The first game on the 12th/13th of June sees our juniors host Kilcummin B for their first ever game on the new surface at our grounds. A visit to Dr Crokes C in round two will come before another trip to Kenmare Shamrocks. The penultimate game in the group will see our juniors host Valentia Young Islanders and they will finish off with a trip to Tousist for round 5. In Division 6B one team will be relegated from a play off between the bottom to sides and one team will be promoted with a play off between the top two sides. Field Development Project This week saw the exciting and eye catching sight of the steel structure for our brand new 270 seated stand commence. The swift and expert work was done by Kingdom Structural Steel and we look forward to welcoming back Denis O’Riordan of FRC to continue the concrete works in the coming days. All clubs had underage teams partake in the Sport Scheme “Ár dTeanga, Ár Spórt”, which sought to increase the amount of Irish being used during trainings in West Kerry. The teams and their Clubs put in a serious amount of effort into increasing the use and speaking of Irish in their sport. Language mentors were appointed to teams, ambassadors were chosen, supports were given from parents, management and all members of the community. Some of the actions that were taken included: training underage teams entirely through Irish where they previously had been trained through English, creating a buddy system for members of the club to speak Irish with each other and having meetings, registration forms and even jerseys in Irish. We will be focusing on renewable energy, which is a key element of Dingle Peninsula 2030, an initiative for a more environmentally and economically sustainable future on the Dingle Peninsula. Over the next five weeks we’ll be talking to five of the ESB Networks Dingle Project Ambassadors to understand how they’re adapting to the renewable technologies in real life. The ESB Networks Dingle Project, a highly innovative 3-year project, sees the deployment and implementation of a range of new technologies to assist in the development of a smart, resilient, low-carbon electricity network. New Community Engagement Coordinator for Corca Dhuibhne 2030 The Dingle Hub is delighted to announce the appointment of Tom Fitzgerald to the recently advertised role of Community Engagement Coordinator for the Corca Dhuibhne 2030 Initiative. There was strong competition for the role with applications received from over 50 candidates and the Dingle Hub greatly appreciates the time given by all to the application process. Tom’s role will help to drive, support and enable local participation in activities which foster a more environmentally and economically sustainable future on the Dingle Peninsula. The position is being funded by the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Discover Programme and the EU Horizon 2020 Ploutos project. A native of Dingle, Tom brings considerable experience to the new role having worked in both the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and private sector. Tom (known more locally as Tommy Fitz) has a BA in Development Studies, Diploma in Quality Management and is currently

completing a Diploma in Retrofit, Conservation and Sustainability. Tom spent several years working in both South Africa and Namibia in the Social Housing Delivery sector. A key element of his role was developing partnerships with community groups, schools, civic organizations, Governments and other stakeholders. Tom fostered relationships through facilitating capacity building and supporting community groups to advocate on their own behalf, raising awareness of the many challenges faced by communities such as housing, health, education. In Namibia, in partnership with the local municipality Tom coordinated a baseline study in informal settlements to establish housing needs, gathering data and listening to the community provided a clear understanding of the communities wants and needs rather than making assumptions. He also established links with the national training authority to pursue training opportunities for employees. Tom joined the Medical Humanitarian NGO, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), as a supply chain manager, where he spent over a year in Bangladesh as part of the organization’s response to the Rohingya crisis. Through his work in the humanitarian sector Tom has seen first-hand the need to focus on developing long term sustainable approaches when working closely with communities. Tom says “Communities are central to creating sustainable environments, I’m so excited to be able to take the learnings and experiences gained during my career and use those skills to help create a positive impact on my community, my home place. I’m passionate about our language and our local culture and I’m so grateful and excited to be in this position, it’s a dream come true for me.” Tom has developed a passion for exploring alternatives that are both environmentally friendly and sustainable, through adopting innovative retrofit techniques, not only focusing on making homes more energy efficient but also considering sustainability in its broadest sense. Richie Williams AWARDS. Three accommodation providers in Dingle have topped the honours list in the Trip Advisor Travellers Choice Awards 2021. Heaton's Guesthouse, Castlewood House and Greenmount House were named as first, second and third best in Ireland under the small Hotel Category. All three also featured in the top 10 in Europe List and Greenmount House was named as the most romantic accommodation provider in Ireland. Congratulations to the management and staff in all these outlets as such awards do not come without a serious amount of hard work and consistant top quality service and presentation of every aspect of ones business. HARBOUR NEWS. A good sign of the confidence with which business people look to the future is to invest in new equipment. Last week two new boats of different sizes docked at the Pier and were welcomed by family members and supporters. The 23 metre fishing trawler Virtuous will be operating out of Dingle for the Granville family mainly off the West Coast and the Porcupine Bank. The Flannery Family from Cooleen welcomed in their new Fast Rib a 12 seater named Experience. All I can say is how lucky we are to have such a diverse range of talents to firstly organise and secondly take part in such impromptu activities in our midst here in Corca Dhuibhne. BUSINESS. Dingle Business Chamber wishes to welcome another new outlet which opens its doors within the next few days. The Liston Family have chosen the name of Dingle Pet Farm for its premises on the Lispole Straight and The Willow Tree is the title chosen for their Restaurant at the adjoining premises. Opening times for both outlets is from 9a.m to 6p.m.and we wish them continued success which complements the existing Bus Service operated by the Liston Family. Dingle Oceanworld is another of our many fine attractions which has reopened its doors to the public and to comply with covid regulations entry must be booked online in advance. COUNTY CLEANUP 2021. The County Cleanup this year is taking place from May 22nd to 29th. Dingle Tidy Towns Group plan to tackle all 8 approach roads to the town out to a distance of 5km in each direction. Due to covid restrictions intending participants are asked to operate in small pods or family units or individually where possible and use 2 metre distancing also. Bags, high vis vests and gloves will be available at the Bottle Bank on the Tracks between 10a.m
and 10.30a.m. on this Saturday May 29th. Recommended routes will be issued on Saturday to participants so we can avoid duplication of areas already cleaned. Participants are asked to make their own transport arrangements again in line with covid guidelines. Everybody welcome. The Business Chamber held very successful online meetings with Kerry County Council Area Officers recently to discuss both short term and longer term plans for the area. The pedestrianising of Strand Street between the hours of 11a.m to 6p.m.is planned again daily from mid June to mid October. Residents of the street may submit their queries, observations or objections direct to Kerry County Council within the next two weeks. Outdoor Dining sections have been enhanced in the Strand Street and Holy Ground areas with street furniture being removed off the streets by 9p.m.daily where applicable. This regulation will be part of the planning permissions for such outlets. Army of the Dead Tom Ó Neachtain Army of the Dead is a new Netflix original zombie-heist film from writer/director Zack Snyder. It is well known that Snyder walked away halfway through filming his superhero epic, Justice League in 2017. It seemed then that he had given up directing entirely, that is until Netflix tempted him back with an offer of a sequel to his remake of Dawn of the Dead. Now, it’s clear that Army of the Dead is a chance for Snyder to blow off steam after his long hiatus.

This film follows a group of mercenaries who are sent into a zombie-filled Las Vegas to recover 20 million dollars, before the city is nuked by the government. The premise itself is very intriguing, especially in light of the growing irrelevance of the zombie genre over the past few years. As a whole, the film delivers on the spectacle you would expect from a Zack Snyder movie, but without his typical nihilism and over-stylised direction. Snyder always delivers on the action, and this film is no different. The excellent choreography paired with the editing and musical score create some stand-out sequences. The plot is knowingly nonsensical, especially during the heist sequence, while still letting the emotional moments hit throughout. The additions to zombie lore are very clever and make this film stand out among the glut of zombie media from the last decade. Snyder’s sense of a clever soundtrack is present here too, and injects the first act with some much needed energy. Bautista plays the lead
role very well but is the only real stand-out in the lack-lustre cast. The most evident problem throughout the film is the writing, especially in the first act. The poor dialogue makes everything before the heist a near-chore to sit through. The lack of characterisation detracts from the tension throughout. The pacing also lets up at times, with most of the action happening over the opening credits, and not much else happening until the second half. Although the poor writing may turn some viewers off, Army of the Dead is a welcome blockbuster that balances a good premise with a light tone, while boasting great action and a good sense of scale. A welcome return for Zack Snyder.
