From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon America in Ventry From – Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 8 February 1817 The ship America, on a voyage from New York to Liverpool, sprang a leak during her passage across the Atlantic. She has put in to Ventry Harbour in County Kerry where her cargo, of 4035 barrels of flour, is being landed.
Four Nobbies Stranded From – Derry Journal, 15 November 1915 According to Lloyd’s insurance agent in Kerry four nobbies broke from their moorings in Brandon Bay during the recent storm and are now stranded. They are expected to become total wrecks. Their crews were on shore at the time.
Lord Ventry’s Remains From - Saunders’s News-Letter, 23 October 1827 The late Lord Ventry, in early life, served as a Lieutenant in the Army. He was engaged in many actions in the heat of the American Revolutionary Wars. His remains are being conveyed from France for internment in the family vault at Dingle, County Kerry.
Dunquin Pier From – Kerry Evening Post, 30 July 1902 In the House of Commons on Monday, Mr. Thomas O’Donnell asked the Chief Secretary, seeing that no steps have yet been taken to build a pier at Dunquin for the Blasket Island community, whether he could take some steps to enable the island residents to maintain communication with the mainland?
Attempted Suicide
In his response Mr. Wyndham stated that in July, 1900, the Congested Districts Board offered to contribute one-half of the estimated cost of a landing place at Dunquin provided the work was carried out by the County Authorities on approved plans. Crippled Glasgow Vessel
Ellen Hoare, a native of Dingle, County Kerry, was arrested in Cork by Sergeant Leary on a charge of attempting to commit suicide. William Kershaw, a lodging house keeper stated that the prisoner landed on Saturday at Queenstown from the S. S.

Baltic from New York. He stated that she came to his house on Sunday with another young woman and complained that her trunk had become mislaid on the passage across. It was his opinion, from the manner in which she conducted herself, that she was suffering mentally. She got a knife and attempted to cut her throat and also tried to jump through an upstairs window.
A Scottish East Indiaman, the Scotland, of 2,000 tons burthen, en route from Calcutta to London, is sheltering in Ventry Harbour, part of Dingle Bay, She is in a completely crippled condition after a very disastrous voyage and is in some danger of being totally wrecked. The vessel is owned by Mr. William Watts of Great Clyde Street, Glasgow. There is also a report from Dingle that a brigantine, name unknown, timber laden, is ashore off Minard Castle, on the north shore of Dingle Bay, and is certain to become a wreck.
Fisherman Drowned From – Kerry Evening Post, 29 July 1893 In the House of Commons Sir Thomas Esmonde asked the Chief Secretary if he is aware that a fisherman named Patrick Murphy was drowned recently while fishing near Ballydavid, County Kerry. He explained that Mr. Murphy’s canoe struck some hidden rocks and that six persons had been drowned at the same place in the past few years. Mr. Esmonde wanted to know if the Congested Districts Board are unable to remove the rocks would the local coastguards be instructed to blow them up. Mr. John Morley replied that Murphy was drowned as stated. The police, however, were not aware that anyone had been similarly drowned during the past 60 years, he said, adding that the removal of the rocks was under consideration.[Thomas Esmonde was M. Death Notice – Moriarty From – Belfast News-Letter, 11 Jan 1874 On October last, at Launceston, Tasmania, in the residence of her nephew, Anne, daughter of the late Admiral Sylverius Moriarty, Dingle, County Kerry.
Rabies in Annascaul From – Londonderry Sentinel, 29 April 1884 We have received a report from Annascaul, in County Kerry, that one death from hydrophobia has been registered in the case of a man who was bitten by a dog last October. There have been reports of a number of dogs affected with rabies in this area and five other people have been bitten in the district.
Wreck Off Ventry From – Evening Herald, 19 January 1894 It is reported from Ventry in County Kerry, that a large vessel, name unknown, has been wrecked at Dunquin beach. No hopes are entertained of the safety of the crew. A photograph has been found which is believed to be that of the captain and five children who are evidently foreigners.
