Richie Williams DEVELOPMENT PLAN. The amended version of the Draft Corca Dhuibhne Electoral Area Local Area Plan 2020-2026 will be open for public consultation until Tuesday February 9th. As it incorporates many proposals relating to Dingle Town and its immediate surrounds we encourage all interested parties to take time to click on the kerrycoco.ie website and propose amendments if necessary before the closing date.

Michael Ó Muircheartaigh sa Cathaoir the Corca Dhuibhne Rugby Club and Billy O'Connor with the Blaskets Summer Maintenance Contract Applications really kept the national viewers very focused on the entire Peninsula. Molaim sibh go leir. COVID. The non stop media focus on the spread of the virus has been a cause of major depression for many people over the past 10 months. I suggest a better way to focus is on the positive side of the situation.

NATIONAL LOTTO. Congratulations and good luck to the winner of €60,000 euro in the National Lottery ticket purchased at Morans Supermarket last week. Bain taithneamh as!!!.

The long awaited vaccination programme has commenced and those most vulnerable are on top of the list and likely to be called within the next few weeks. More companies are getting their products approved and will speed up the vaccination for everybody very shortly. The current national and international restricted movements are likely to be lifted as soon as the vaccination process gathers pace allowing us all a bit more freedom in the months ahead.

MASSES. Weekend Masses in St Mary's Church in Dingle will be celebrated at 6.15p.m. on Saturdays and 11.30a.m. on Sundays. All masses are livestreamed on dingleparish.ie but not open to the public until covid restrictions are lifted. Its like having the stations in the house but none of the neighbours turned up!!!.

A glance at the calendar tells us that the longer days are on the way and we are facing the more enlightening time of the year with daffodils leading the annual growth race. Lets appreciate what we have as listening to all the petty complaints and grievances on radio and t.v recently certainly does not help the depression very much.

TIDY TOWNS. The Committee wish through this column to convey a big thank you to the individuals and business outlets who took part in or contributed to the ongoing work of the local Tidy Towns Group during 2020. Mile Buíochas dibh go leir.

There is light at the end of every tunnel and I for one can see it better every passing day.

HOPE GUATEMALA. Tickets for the annual raffle can be purchases online at a cost of 5 euro each before the draw date on February 28th. Full details available on website hopeguatemala.org.

Hopefully we will be able to resume the work evenings again when such gatherings are permitted. in the meantime please keep your own area nice and tidy and maybe let us know of areas around town which need some attention either litter black spots or a few extra flower pots or rockeries etc. The dog poo issue is still a problem and we appeal to all canine owners to please pick up the poo after your dog especially in public areas. TELEVISION. Great publicity on national television for the Peninsula recently. We saw a full programme by Celebrity Chef Nevin Maguire featuring several personnal and outlets mainly relating to the fishing trade both at sea and on land.

Energy Tips at home BewareCost ofSaving Scams

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in

tips on how I canBe do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise? Besome Informed, Alert, Be Secure!

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Who Nose what Food can do for the Sinuses? Irene Ní Fhlannúra

to painful membranes. Make sure to place your nose above the cup when you make a ginger brew and to inhale deeply and let the aroma fill your sinuses for instant relief. Horseradish has a pungent aroma and like the onions, will make you cry when shredding or cutting into this saucy root. It is one of the most powerful natural decongestants - you will instantly feel a tingling sensation in your nasal area when you eat it and within moments the thick mucus in your nose will begin to loosen, helping to clear congestion and restore normal function. Oily fish, flaxseed, avocado, nuts, seeds and egg are good sources of omega 3. Though, not famed for sinus action, omega 3 is a great antiinflammatory for all parts of the body. The lubricating effect of omega 3 oils is also important to the integrity and fluidity of mucus membranes, making it very worthwhile to include in your nose-friendly kitchen.

When thinking of subject matter for writing this article, I am usually prompted by a conversation I may have had or I hear something on the radio that piques my curiosity, or simply the time of the year is enough inspiration to get the thoughts flowing. This week, I have seen so many noses hanging over the top of masks that I took it as a sign from the Universe to dig deep into the nose cavity and see what emerges! For most people, the only time we really think about the sinuses are when they are acting up. Even now, during the pandemic and so much focus on the respiratory system, the sinuses and their role in our health, barely gets a mention. The word “sinus” refers to a system of hollow cavities in the body, more commonly relating to those around the nose and eyes which are all interconnected with each other and to the nose itself. You will find them in the bony part in either cheek, both sides of the bridge of the nose, behind the eyebrows and between the eyes, and behind the nose itself. The sinus cavities are lined with soft tissue, and they are usually empty. The walls of the sinus cavities are lightly coated with mucus, which keeps the tissue moist and healthy. This mucus traps bacteria, viruses, dust and particles entering the body through the airways. Tiny hair-like projections in the sinuses sweep the mucus (and whatever is trapped in it) towards openings that lead to the back of the throat. From there, it slides down to the stomach and destroyed by gastric juices. This continual process is a normal body function and part of our immune defences. In addition, the shape, volume and health of the sinuses influence how we perceive someone’s voice. It is necessary for the sinuses to drain regularly and freely to clear mucus and carry out all its functions. Sinus trouble arises when the lining becomes inflamed, congested, blocked, irritated (due to infections or allergies) or when there is a physical deformity (deviated septum, polyps, narrow openings). Conventional treatments include antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants, steroids and saline nasal washes, all of which are useful in their own way. However, food is usually the last thing you think of when sinuses act up but there is some great research that warrants nutrition to be included in the treatment and protection of the sinuses.

Vitamin C has been reviewed over and over for various health conditions including allergies, colds and flus. Many studies indicate that the ascorbic acid component of vitamin C decreases histamine production, thus lowering the severity of seasonal and environmental allergies. Again, vitamin C foods are easily found – citrus fruits, being the most obvious but also in parsley, kale, broccoli, kiwis and many other fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C foods are best eaten across the whole day rather than in one meal, as Vitamin C is metabolized quickly in the body and once it’s gone, it’s gone! The same goes for supplementing with Vitamin C, better to divide the dose into two or three times a day, rather than having one big wallop of Vitamin C in one go. Vitamin E is also known to lessen symptoms of allergies and hay fever by inhibiting the production of IgE antibodies. Another cohort of studies examining nutrients and hay fever showed that adults who increase consumption of vitamin E foods prior to the onset of seasonal allergies have less severe reactions and symptoms when exposed to allergens. Vitamin E foods include tofu, spinach, almonds, sunflower seeds, avocado, fish, broccoli and olive oil – it’s amazing to see the cross over of nutrients in the same foods, time and time again! Finally, Vitamin A is considered a “membrane conditioner” that helps build healthy mucus membranes in the nose, sinus, chest, throat, eyes and skin. Our sinuses are as healthy as the mucus that lines them so keeping that mucus thin and clear is of vital importance to the function of the sinuses. Vitamin A (as retinol) is found in liver, butter, eggs and animal products and as betacarotene (pre-cursor to vitamin A) is in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables and dark, leafy greens. If you are a seasonal allergy sufferer, it is best to start your care plan now than when you are in the throws of the pollen season. All of these foods are very identifiable and available year round demonstrating that Mother Nature “nose” best and provides us with plenty of options to keep our sinuses healthy whatever the season or reason! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health, Dingle 086 1662562 - Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com All Consultations available by video call and phone for now. Just call and I’ll set you up!

Keep Calm, Carry On Cooking!

First up, must be the alliums, more specifically, onions. All that slobbering when cutting onions washes out the nasal passages and can clear congestion of the sinuses. Onions are a good source of Quercetin, a compound that help inhibit inflammatory chemicals and stabilize the mast cells that release histamine, acting like an antihistamine. Quercetin is also found in berries, apples, broccoli, and many nuts and seeds. Garlic, another allium, is famed for its anti-bacterial properties and it also contains allyl thiosulfonate, a compound that is believed to offer relief from congestion. This compound is more potent in raw garlic so load up on the garlic pesto dressings whenever you can. Ginger, often combined with honey and lemon during a cold, is great for reducing inflammation of sinus linings bringing about ease and comfort 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Castlegregory Notes Castlegregory Community Council will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 9th February 2021. The meeting will be held on zoom and anyone wishing to attend is welcome to do so. Please email with your contact details so that we can send you meeting ID & code to access the meeting. (castleinfocenter@gmail.com) Thank you. Logainmneacha na Machairí: The traditional lesser-known place names of a locality are rooted in its topography and cultural history and reflect the close relationship between a community and its immediate environment. The names of fields, rocks, inlets, bóthairíns, landing places, humps, hollows and so on contribute immensely to the rich tapestry of times past. Through a study of their etymology, some of the layers of our history can be partially unveiled. ‘Urlann’, ‘Páirc an Ráithín’ and ‘Cathair na Faithche’ reflect the presence of pre-Christian forts while ‘The Bán’ and ‘Gort na Sciath’ depict past agricultural land use. Calaithe an Bháid, Calaithe an Ghrin, Calaithe Léin and the Cé, all landing places, indicate the importance of the sea for fishing and as a means of transport for the inhabitants of Oileán tSeanaigh. Many place names would not have been preserved had they not been handed down through the years. We therefore must acknowledge the contribution of past generations in preserving this important aspect of our heritage. We would also like to thank all those who contributed to this collection: Compiled by Martin Lynch and Eoghan Ó Loingsigh for Maharees Conservation Association. This excellent production is a delight to read. Very well written and illustrated to the highest standards this will bring back long lost memories of place names steeped in history and create a sense of pride to all who wish to have a connection to The Maharees.

Tá scéal an leabhair seo dlúite leis an bpobal fhéin. Is comhartha misnigh agus dóchais go mbeadh duine éigin d’bhur muintir fhéin sásta tuairisc ar imeachtaí an chumainn a chur os comhair an tsaoil. Failtímis roimis an bhféinmhuinín, go háirithe, a léiríonn sé. Is léir dúinn go léir nach dteastaíonn uainn ár stair a ligint i ndíchuimhne, agus ní náir linn é sin a dh’fhógairt os comhair an tsaoil, mar is maith a thuigimid an cath a troideadh romhainn – an rud atá againn, bíodh sé againn! Maidir leis an údar, deirtear go molann an saothar an t-údar i gconaí, tá paidhceáil, póirseáil agus tomhach diamhair déanta ag Paddy Griffin – ní inniu ná inné a thosnaigh sé ar an obair, agus ní h-é go mbeadh sé á lorg, ní dóigh liom gur féidir le muintir Lios Póil a shaothar a chúirteamh go deo le Paddy as a bhfuil déanta anso aige. Deireadh Liam Ó Rócháin linne anso sa Ghaeltacht ‘an rud is fiú a dhéanamh in aon chor, is fiú é a dhéanamh i gceart’ – tá san déanta go paiteanta ag Paddy Griffin. Aon duine a léifidh an leabhar so, beidh meas aige ar an daoine a thug CLG Lios Póil ar an saol, agus beidh sé morálach as an iarracht – níl aon amhras ná gur iarracht dochreidte é. Gheobhaidh sibh tuiscintí agus féachaintí ar dhúchas na muintire, ar mhianach an phobail, agus ar mhórthréithe agus agus ar shársprid an pharóiste.Tá stair, greann, géarchúis, béaloideas agus scéalta gaile is gaisce ag pléascadh tríd an insint go léir ó chlúdach go clúdach. Táid ar fad teanntaithe i súil ribe Phaddy Griffin, moglaithe go paiteanta ina líontán fiosrachta. Leabhar é

seo a dhealann Paddy amach mar fhathach, mar cheannródaí pobail ar cheard na scéalaíochta agus insint scéil. Tá an scéal go léir ann, mar a bhí agus mar atá idir mhín agus garbh, milis agus searbh, blianta rathmhara na n-ochtóidí, agus blianta dealúsacha na gcaogaidí agus blianta roimhe sin arís. This book is a phenomenal achievement. It chronicles a hundred and thirty years in the life of one of Kerry’s great clubs, from that first decade at the end of the nineteenth century to the early years of the last century when the Prendiville’s mossey field in Arda Mór was the prototype for todays astro-turf. We get a sharp early insight into what made that great patriot Tomás Ághas the man he was, his training regime that brought Lios Póil to a county final in 1907, and his instructions to those who were lagging behind in training runs ‘fan ar an gclaí’ he used to say! We see the club before, during and after the Revolution when men and women of Lios Póil distinguished themselves on the field and off it at home and abroad – America, Australia, and in England. Speaking of fields, this book describes the fields that our games were played in the past, Prendeville’s I have already mentioned, but names such as Na Leacain, An Maoileann, Páirc an Aonaigh, Páirc na Claise and An Buaille Iata resonates to this day, and later in the book we get an extraordinary ‘cur síos’ of how a great community effort that coincided with the start of a golden era in Lispole, an effort that yielded a new playing field that we are so familiar with today, and a community centre that was a model for so many parishes in Kerry at the time … The ravages of emigration are dealt with, and another striking aspect of this book is the amount of names and clubs and parishes had over the years. I had heard of course of The Gascons, The Wreckers, The Pearses and the likes, but other short lived monikers like The Forget Me Nots, The Piaras Feiritéars, Leitriúchs, Mount Brandon Rangers, Na hAghasaigh in later years and so many more, are given due attention in this book as well … I’m one of those people who never really believed in individual accolades in team games like football and hurling – stuff like, Man of the Match, Player of the Year, Team of the Century and all that, I never really got it, níor ghéilleas riamh do, but sometimes there are people in the community that stand out for sporting excellence, who’s song really needs to be sung, such people like Billy Casey, Liam Higgins and the recently departed Paudie Fitzgerald, beannacht Dé leo go léir, they are all acknowledged in this book … Another feature of the book is the regard given to note keeping of Con Brosnan, the emergence of Banna Ceoil Lios Póil, the deaths of the older generation founding fathers are acknowledged, the game of handball, múinteoirí scoile an pharóiste, and Euge Devane’s contribution to the years of glory. Tá alt ana-bhreá ag Tomás Ó hAiniféin ar Lios Póil agus Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, agus is seodra ceart na hagallaimh atá déanta ag Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh le leithéidí Mhicil Uí Bhriain agus James ‘Garret’ Mac Gearailt, agus tá cur síos chomh maith ar an gcleamhnas atá idir Cros Mhic Lionnáin agus Lios Póil. I suppose the winning of the West Kerry Championship in 2002 gave the younger generation of footballers a taste of the glory experienced so often by the older lads, agus thug sé bhonn sinsir Chiarraí Thiar don ochtar dearthár de mhuntir Ainiféin – a leithéid de ghaisce. Gaisce eile ab ea an tslí ina raibh Lios Póil ábalta ról lárnach a thabhairt do mhná sa chumann le leithéidí Máire Dorgan ina rúnaí ó 1985, agus Cathy Griffin, Joan Uí Shúilleabháin, Bridie Flahive agus Niamh Ní Nuanáin i lár an aonaigh inniu … If this book shows us anything, it is that the story of most if not all GAA clubs is ‘thuas seal, thíos seal, bliain leat agus bliain id choinne’ … Maybe it is true for the poet that said the calibration that really counts is how much heart people invest, how much they ignore the fear of being hurt, or caught out, or humiliated, and the only regret that they didn’t live boldly enough, they didn’t invest enough heart – nothing else really counts at all in football – Lispole were never found wanting in that regard. It’s all here in this book for anybody that has an interest in GAA, not just Lispole GAA. Ba mhaith liom mar chlabhsúr buíochas a ghabháil leo siúd a thug an phríbhléid so dom léirmheas a dhéanamh ar leabhar ceiliúrtha céad tríocha blain caide is spóirt i gceantar Lios Póil – Laochra Lios Póil – bronntanas aoibhinn do Ghaeil age baile agus thar lear. Comhghairdeas arís le Paddy Griffin agus le héinne a thug cabhair leis an leabhar seo a thabhairt ar an saol, agus gura fada buan CLG Lios Póil. Fógra: Tá Laochra Lios Póil ar díol i siopaí Uí Chatháin agus Crosaire Kate i Lios Póil; agus sa Lar-Ionad Oideachais, An Caifé Liteartha, Dingle Bookshop, agus Garveys sa Daingean. Luach £30.

Small Changes: Sustainable Resolutions The new year is traditionally a time when we resolve to become a better versions of ourselves whether it is to lose weight, get fit, become financially savvy, spend less time on a smartphone or become more ‘mindful’. Most people (80%) will have given up on their goals before the end of January, often because the resolution is not specific enough and they have underestimated the number or the scale of the changes required. Losing weight, for example, is sold by a hugely profitable diet industry as variations of a formula of eating less and exercising more when in reality it requires a long list of lifestyle and mind-set changes in addition to support and accountability to ensure long term success. According to research the secret to keeping a resolution is all about how you frame your goal. Almost 60% of people who start a new behaviour rather than giving up something up establish those behaviours as a permanent habit. Breaking down more ambitious resolutions into small changes and continuing to tackle those changes one at a time also increases the chances of fulfilling those goals. Despite the fact that environmental problems such as climate change, plastic pollution etc. are complex issues which require actions at all levels of society, most of the responsibility and blame is (wrongly) placed on the individual so that it seems we must make monumental effort to change. Adopting environmentally sustainable behaviours does not, however, need to be extreme (e.g. zero-waste lifestyle; becoming vegan). Furthermore, in addition to beneficial outcomes for the environment, eco-sustainable changes usually have positive impacts on our health and wealth also. So, based on previous articles, here are four simple habits that could be adopted as sustainable resolutions this year.

3. Use a keep-cup and reusable water bottle– 22, 000 coffee cups are discarded in Ireland every hour and we generate over 3 billion single use bottles each year. Overuse of single use plastics and unnecessary packaging are issues that require action from many angles, from national and local government to industry, but they are also issues where the collective efforts of individuals can make a difference. Recent research suggests that we ingest the equivalent of a credit card sized amount of micro plastics every week so get in the habit of bringing your clean keep cup and/or water bottle with you every time you leave home/work as a first step in reducing your personal plastic waste. 4. Consume fashion mindfully –This may sound like an airy-fairy resolution but the extent of the detrimental environmental and societal impact of fast fashion is astounding. For example, every second the equivalent of a bin lorry load of textiles is landfilled or burned and less than 1% of all material used to produce clothing is recycled. It is cheaper for many online retailers to destroy clothes you return (i.e. because they do not fit or not what you expect) than it is to clean and repackage them while the average wage of a garment worker is $95 a month. Again, this is an issue that requires action at many levels of society but as individuals doing something as simple as taking a few moments to ask ‘do I really need this?’ before adding to your real or virtual cart can reduce the waste. Buying clothing of the best quality you can afford (or even-better buying second-hand) will help reduce the cycle of fast fashion. Realise the power of your money and spend it locally and with environmentally and ethically responsible brands.

1. Write a shopping list – I have written about food waste on a number of occasions and the carbon emissions and waste resources associated with it but it is always worth highlighting that a third of all the food we buy is thrown in the bin. Reducing food waste can start before we even go to a shop by writing a shopping list. Knowing what food you have and what food you need stops you over-buying. It also makes it easier to identify what food you need to use up before it goes bad. Getting into the habit of writing a shopping list (and sticking to it!) saves time, money and stress! 2. Turn off electrical switches - If you grew up in the 1980s, you are no doubt familiar with the importance of turning off the immersion. Vampire power (a term for standby power or leaking electricity) may not have the notoriety of the immersion but it can account for between 5-10% of the cost of your electricity bill. Get in the habit of turning off and unplugging all electrical appliances and devices when not in use, making a special effort to unplug all unnecessary appliances, chargers, screens etc. at night. Don’t forget the WiFi! West Kerry Live 9

Irish Language On Film Ciara Barrett As a researcher in the field of Irish Cinema, there are two aspects of the Irish film industry I’m surprised haven’t become more expansive: 1) a live action genre adapting Irish folklore and mythology, and 2) Irish-language feature filmmaking. The latter represents a gap in the market immediately relevant to Gaeltacht-based audiences and would-be filmmakers. There are concrete, complex, and overall controversial reasons for this lack (including issues regarding funding, demographic appeal, and competition from the excellent work produced via Irish-language documentary, TV and children’s programming). Nevertheless, we’re on the cusp of an Irish-language filmmaking boom. What follows is a retrospective on Irish-language cinema (or films featuring the Irish language in a narratively critical way), which speaks to the emergence of this cultural moment and to the overall socio-political significance of speaking Irish on film.

Poitín (Bob Quinn, 1978) Director Bob

Quinn helped usher in a ‘New Wave’ of Irish Cinema with this Irish-language production about Connemara moonshiners. Before the 1970s, most ‘Irish Cinema’ was not produced indigenously, but, like the locally filmed Ryan’s Daughter, financed by British or Hollywood money for a ‘tourist gaze’. Poitín is anything but a pretty film though. Typical of the New Wave, it exposes the underbelly of ‘traditional’ Irish society, illuminating existing hypocrisy and repressiveness. The Gaeltacht here is no utopia, but it demands representation.

Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom (Daniel O’Hara, 2003) This comedic short

succinctly points to the ironic obscurity of Irish within contemporary Irish culture. Viewed from a post-Celtic Tiger/post-immigration boom perspective, Yu Ming raises the hopeful question of whether Irish could actually become a vehicle for broadening definitions of Irishness and cultural identity beyond traditionally limiting concepts of race and ethnicity.

Hunger (Steve McQueen, 2008) This is by no means an ‘Irish

language film’ (maybe not even an ‘Irish film’), but it is about (among other philosophical things) Bobby Sands and The Troubles. Irish, as spoken (or not, as the case may be) between inmates, is used at a brief but key moment to represent the complexities of self-identification amongst Special Category prisoners. The Irish in this film is spoken low and without subtitles, such that the dialogue is perceived only by audiences with a knowledge of Irish. This is the only example (to my knowledge) of a Britishmade film privileging a Gaeilgeoir audience’s perspective.

Amhrán na Mara (Tomm Moore, 2014) Released internationally in

Anglophone form as Song of the Sea, this animated film celebrates Celtic mythology in its narrative and aesthetic, with hand-drawn animation evoking illuminated manuscripts and pre-Christian artwork. Amhrán’s popular and critical success speaks to the potential of film as Gaelainn to, firstly, engage children’s imagination (adults’ too) and, secondly, to instill the richness of the Irish language and Irish visual culture.

Black ’47 (Lance Daly, 2018) and Arracht (Tomás Ó Súilleabháin, general release in 2021 – all going well with the pandemic) I

list these two films together for two reasons: firstly, they represent a trend in contemporary Irish Cinema towards narrativizing Ireland’s traumatic past in the Famine; and secondly, they are set in Connemara and either partially (Black ’47) or mostly (Arracht) in Irish. This is an emergent subgenre of Irish Cinema, marked by particular subject matter and by the use of Irish as a cultural signifier and linguistic signature. It certainly follows that if the Irish language on film can be so embraced by an international community of critics (Arracht has been widely successful on the festival circuit), then surely more will be produced.

Farming News Louis Murchan FARM TRANSFERS We have entered our second year under Covid-19, and the situation is not going to get much better in the coming months. At the current rate of vaccination, it is not expected to have all who are willing to get vaccinated, treated before Mid- to Late Autumn. In the meantime, The Show Must Go On. Any farmers intending to transfer land or entitlements to family member(s) should decide as soon as possible, and begin the transfer process. As we are under Level-5 Restrictions, and will possibly shuffle between Levels 3, 4 and 5 for the next 6 months, it would be wise to get your affairs sorted early. Leaving things to the last minute may result in their wishes being delayed or not carried out, at all. SHEEP CENSUS 2020 Just a final reminder to all sheep farmers that the closing date to submit the annual sheep Census is approaching, 31st January 2021. When completing said form, remember that the actual census date was 31st December 2020, and when signing, put this date down. Otherwise, this is quite a simple form. You are asked to fill in the numbers of ewes, rams, and other sheep types on the farm, and the total number of sheep over two years on the farm on the specified date. If you have no sheep at this time, but intend purchasing sheep at a later date, be it this year or next, tick the appropriate box. This will allow you retain an active Flock Number. Reactivating a dormant or dead flock number can be a hassle and time consuming. BEAM 5% STOCKING REQUIREMENT Approximately 18,000 farmer participants in the Beef Emergency Aid Measure (BEAM) have yet to meet the 5% reduction in organic nitrogen requirement, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has confirmed. Of the 32,444 farmers to receive €78 million in payments under the scheme, just 14,072 (43%) are currently meeting the requirement, according to the authority. The remaining farmers have until June 30, 2021 to make the necessary reductions of 5% of livestock manure nitrogen, compared to the reference period of July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 – or face a clawback of payments, as things stand. This would amount to more than €40 million if figures remain as they are, come July. Force majeure requests are dealt with on a case-bycase basis, but in general there is a precedent in other schemes for situations relating to TB restrictions to qualify as force majeure. “80 requests have been received from farmers wishing to return the BEAM payment, and to date 65 of these requests have been processed,” the department representative added. SHEEP WELFARE SCHEME ROLL-OVER TO 2021 The Sheep Welfare Scheme provides financial support to farmers for taking extra steps to improve the welfare of their flock. Farmers get €10 per breeding ewe for completing flock welfare measures. To qualify for the scheme you must: • submit a Basic Payment Scheme application for each year of scheme • submit a sheep census return for each year during the lifetime of the scheme - an exception is made for new entrants in year of entry

for the 2020 Sheep Welfare Scheme including Cross Compliance. Those undertaking parasite control must use the approved list of laboratories for sampling. You are paid €10 per breeding ewe and the scheme year will run from 1 February 2020 to 31 January 2021. Reductions in payment will apply where not all actions are completed. For the 2021 scheme, existing participants in the Sheep Welfare Scheme will automatically be enrolled in the 2021 scheme. New entrants should email (sheepscheme@agriculture. gov.ie) or write to: Sheep Welfare Section, Department of Agriculture, Government Buildings, Old Abbeyleix Rd, Portlaoise, Co Laois requesting to join the 2021 sheep welfare scheme. The scheme closes to new applicants on the 31st of January 2021. ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE - MAJOR RESEARCH CALL The Junior Minister of Agriculture, Martin Heydon, T.D. welcomed the EU call for Research Proposals under its International research programme which call specifically focuses on tackling the rising threat of antibiotic resistance. This call includes 30 funding organisations from 21 member countries and including commitments from the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine under its support for Research has a total estimated call budget is €24.9 million. This will lead to innovative interventions to control the development and transmission of antibiotic resistance in and/or between One Health settings. In order to successfully address AMR the primary goal of the agri-food sector must be to reduce antibiotic usage through maintaining the highest possible standards in animal health. The call invites eligible Research Performing Organisations to submit collaborative research proposals directed at addressing the issue. Through this research call, it is intended to create and reinforce the collaboration between research partners coming from different countries and different fields of expertise to Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is resistance of a microorganism to a drug that was originally effective for treatment of infections caused by that microorganism. Resistant microorganisms (including bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites) are able to withstand attack by antimicrobial drugs, such as antibacterial drugs (e.g., antibiotics), anti-fungals, anti-virals, and antimalarials, so that standard treatments become ineffective and infections persist, increasing the risk of spread to others. The 'One Health' concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment. Recognising that human health, animal health and ecosystem health are inextricably linked, ‘One Health’ seeks to promote, improve and defend the health and well-being of all species by enhancing cooperation and collaboration between physicians, veterinarians, other scientific health and environmental professionals and by promoting strengths in leadership and management to achieve these goals. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

Getting The Vaccine

long untouched by the pandemic’s worst, is now suffering…. .But I feel, on balance, that this vaccine is worth shouting about. Your turn will come!

Dr. Peadar Ó Fionnain

However as the initial euphoria about vaccination passes, as the nursing home residents and our grannies and parents are vaccinated, we will see a greater amount of “vaccine hesitancy” coming to the fore. There is a strong anti-vaccination movement behind this, and of course there are legitimate fears about anything new. It strikes me that fear of vaccines is an expression of genuine disempowerment that many of us feel in the modern world: Companies have become too powerful, the truth is hard to find among so much conflicting information, who can we trust anymore? Social media has an amplifying effect on these legitimate fears.

Last Saturday saw me gathered in an excitable queue of over 100 Kerry GPs in the lobby of University Hospital Kerry. Word had spread that the hospital had 100 vaccines to spare for us GPs, and there was an air of disbelief that this was actually happening. You could feel the tension between the palpable desire to share the excitement with long-estranged colleagues and the need to observe 2 metre decorum. Hospital staff had volunteered their weekend to give out the vaccine and when finally my name was called and I scuttled in to find patrician Tom McCormack, lifelong hospital servant, administering the magic 0.3mls. I felt an indescribably rush of gratitude to Tom, the hospital, and as the day passed a real sense of relief. Finally I could see an end to the tensions of our work for the past year. It’s not nice keeping patients at arm’s length, at the end of a telephone line, or briskly dealt with at the far end of the room. It’s been trying, leaning back when patients lean forwards, minimising touch, keeping our distance when your human instinct is to do the opposite. As my antibodies soar I’m feeling the relief of knowing I’m unlikely to be guilty of passing on the virus. And as your thoughts wander, other modest visions of freedom present themselves – going out for a meal, meeting friends again, holidays…. It feels unfair to boast of this, when most others won’t have yet been offered a vaccine. I do know it is a privilege and a perk of the job, undeserved as there are so many people who are more deserving. Dingle,

As I write, about 40million doses of the vaccine have so far been given, about 140,000 of them in Ireland. Initial studies suggesting only mild sideeffects (sore arm, a temperature) as well as allergic reactions have been borne out, and it has been very reassuring that nothing unexpected has emerged. We know that the vast majority of vaccine side effects present in the first few days, so things look very positive in terms of long-term safety. There is no single action in life (crossing the road, eating an apple) that does not carry potential harm or consequences. In medicine we go to great lengths to try and quantify that harm as well as the benefit so as to make logical recommendations. We are right to feel uncertain of course, but I think the issue of covid vaccination is quite clearcut. There is obvious harm in not vaccinating , while the harm in vaccination is minimal. We make decisions with less than 100% information all the time. For reasons of health, protecting ourselves and protecting others, as well as for our society and general wellbeing, getting the vaccine as soon as it is offered clearly brings more good than harm. Solidarity has been one amazing trait brought about by the last 12 months, and getting the vaccine is fundamentally an act of solidarity. Tá súil agam go mbeidh an méid sin sceitimíní ort agus a bhí ar dochtúirí teaghlaigh Chiarraí nuair a glaotar ar d’ainm…. West Kerry Live 15

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Lost at Sea From – Kerry Evening Post, 4 April 1874 A barque laden with coal has been reported missing. The Tubal Cain left Liverpool for Limerick over three weeks ago. Since then there have been no reports or sightings of her. It is believed she has been lost off the Kerry coast. There has also been a report from Limerick of a vessel lost off Loop Head. The captain of the brig Antony has told the authorities that while en route to Limerick he saw the brig Kate off Loop head. He believes she has gone down with all hands. The Kate is a vessel of 700 tons and her crew is made up of seven Limerick seamen.

and have the damage repaired rather than submit to such exorbitant estimates. The Crown’s law advisor told the court that whatever liability the ship owner had incurred the magistrate could not impose a fine greater than £5 on him and that the matter could be brought as an action in another court. The County Surveyor, who was in court, told the magistrate that the damage to the pier could be repaired for £30 or less. The magistrate, Mr. R. Hickson, said he was confident Mr. Devereux would agree to the suggested sum.

Bridge Tenement to be Auctioned. From - Kerry Evening Post, 02 March 1901 For sale by Public Auction the tenement and premises known as BRIDGE TENEMENT in the town of Dingle, County Kerry, according to the instructions of John T. Kavanagh of Southampton, England. The auction will be held in the COURTHOUSE DINGLE on Saturday the 23rd of March, 1901, at the hour of One o’Clock. The property consists of a valuable and comfortable dwelling house, large shop, with spacious and extensive Yard, Garden and Out-offices attached now in the occupation of Dr. Hudson as Yearly Tenant.

A special sitting of Dingle Petty Sessions Court was held last Friday where the widow Ellen Moriarty’s charge against three men was heard. The three defendants were accused of causing her husband’s death near Lathive. The deceased had suffered serious injuries after falling into a pit. The widow claimed that the three unnamed accused were responsible for her loss. However, no evidence was presented to the court to support her case. A statement made by the dying man was not received in evidence. The magistrate expressed regret that the Coroner did not hold an inquest and discharged the prisoners.

Distress in Dingle From – Kerry Evening Post, 20 February 1886 Letter to the editor from M. D. Kavanagh; Sir – I wrote a few days ago to the Right Hon. J. Morley, M. P., Chief Secretary for Ireland, touching the distress now existing in my native town and urged upon the right hon. Gentlemen the necessity of procuring work for the unemployed, and of placing the poor fishermen upon a better footing. The following is the Chief Secretary’s reply; Sir – I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, relative to alleged distress at Dingle, county Kerry, and to say that I have forwarded it to the Local Government Board for enquiry, I am, your obedient servant, John Morley.

Valentia Wreckage From – Kerry Evening Post, 13 February 1861. Two boards have been picked up at high water at Corabeg, on Valentia Island. One is eight feet in length bearing the name of a ship Thor. The other is nine feet in length with the name Ulverstone. Both names are highly decorated with ornamental gilt work and appear not to have been in the water for very long. Some timber has been washed ashore in the same area but appears to have been in the water for an extended period. [Ulverstone is a town in northern Tasmania but may not have any connection with the above vessel].

Dingle Pier Damaged From – Kerry Evening Post, 24 January 1857 Richard Devereux, a native of Wexford, was summoned to appear at Dingle court for damage done to the pier by his brig during the late storm. The vessel was anchored near the end of the pier and was driven violently against the structure several times which caused the damage. Due to the efforts of the captain and crew, who endangered their own lives, they prevented the ship from being pitched onto the pier where she would have been dashed to pieces. Some of the town’s stonemasons estimated the cost of repairing the damage to be in the region of £150. Mr. Devereux contended that the estimate was far in excess of what the cost of repairs should be. He said that if he was found responsible in law to have caused the damage he would secure the services of masons himself

Sceitimíní na Nollag

Is mise an crann Nollag, a bhíonn seasta go hard

An Áit is Ansa Liom ar Domhan

Is buataisí caide mé. Táim luite faoin gcrann Nollag. Táim ag fanacht leis an 25ú lá den Nollaig. Lá Nollag atá ann anois agus tá sceitimíní an domhain orm. Táim ag fanacht le duine éigin mé a oscailt. Yaaay! Táim oscailte! Chuas chuig an ngort caide ar dtús. Bhí sé ana-fhliuch ón sneachta, bhíos fliuch báite sula dtána abhaile. Chuir an duine mé os comhair na tine chun mé féin a thriomú. Bhí an tine breá te agus bhí sé go hálainn. An lá ina dhiaidh san chuas go dtí an gort caide arís. Bhí gach rud go híontach ach go tobann nuair a bhuaileas cic ar an liathróid cuireadh poll mór ionam. Bhíos ana-fhliuch agus ana-fhuar leis an bpoll mór groí. Nuair a chuas abhaile bhí fearg an domhain ar an nduine toisc go raibh poll ionam agus chaith sé mé sa bhosca bruscair. Bhí brón an tsaoil orm. D'úsáid sé mé i gcomhair lá amháin agus an lá ina dhiaidh is sa bhruscar atáim. D'fhanas sa bhruscar ar feadh ceithre lá gan éinne dom úsáid. Ach ansan lá amháin chonaic leanbh óg mé. Ní raibh go leor airgid aige. Phioc sé suas mé agus thug sé leis abhaile mé. Chuir sé isteach sa mheaísín níocháin mé agus shocraigh sé an poll mór groí. Bhí áthas an domhain orm.

Na maisiúcháin orm a bhíonn crochta gan ord

Gach sórt toirt is gach sórt dath

Is breá liom a bheith ar an ngort caide ag imirt caide sa ghort. Is maith liom na rudaí atá timpeall an ghoirt. Tá cnoic ann. Ní bhíonn a lán daoine ag labhairt Gaelainne, mar níl Abha an Scáil sa Ghaeltacht. Ach fós fhéin, bíonn daoine ag labhairt Gaelainne ann. Is breá liom an samhradh sa ghort caide le mo chairde is bímid ag imirt ar feadh an lae ar fad. Caithimid beagnach an samhradh ar fad sa ghort.

An dianghlasáil, an scanradh, an bhreoiteacht, na tuairiscí laethúla ó lucht leighis ar líon na ndaoine in aonaid éigeandála sna hospidéil. Thar aon rud eile líon na ndaoine a fuair bás agus a cuireadh i gcré na cille gan na gnáthnósanna atá tagaithe chugainn ónar sinsear maidir le tórramh agus adhlacadh. Daoine muintire faoi bhrón gan breith ar lámh acu ó ghaolta nó ó chairde. Ní raibh a fhios againn cérbh iad na daoine a cailleadh. Statisticí a tugadh dúinn lá i ndiaidh lae. Dhéanfá dearmad uaireanta gur daoine iad in aon chor. Níl ansin ach cuid de na rudaí a bheidh á tabhairt chun cuimhne againn. Beidh a liosta féin ag gach éinne. Conas is féidir liom a rá mar sin go bhféadfadh sé bheith níos measa? Ní mór a bhí go maith faoi ach is fiú cuimhneamh ar na rudaí seo. Comhar na gcomharsan mar a bhí sa tseanashaol, bhí sé go hiontach. Na daoine óga a chuir aithne agus a tháinig i gcabhair ar dhaoine níos sine, go raibh srianta an chocúin orthu, go háirithe tríd an CLG. An teaghmháil a dheineamar athuair ar fón agus le cruinnithe Zúm le cairde agus gaolta i gcian agus i gcongar. An t-ardú meanma a lean an aimsir aoibhinn a bhí againn le linn na céad tréimhse dian-ghlasála. An gharradóireacht a dhein daoine go raibh sé de ádh orthu gáirdín a bheith acu agus iad aclaí go leor chuige. Bhí ár ndóthain le n-ithe againn gan ach arán a lua. Cé dhearúdfaidh arán banana, spelt agus sourdough gan an builín traidisiúnta sóide agus cruithneachtan a bhac? Tá rud eile a raghaidh chun tairbhe dúinn de thoradh na paindéime agus gach a leanann í. B’fhéidir go bhfuil léamh níos fearr anois againn ar an méid atá á fhulaingt ag daoine atá ag éalú ó ghorta agus ó chogadh in áiteanna ar fud an domhain. Is mó saghas dianghlasáil atá ann. An gcuirfidh na srianta atá lenár saol le tamall anuas lenár dtuiscint agus ár

ndaonnacht i leith daoine bochta go bhfuil gach rud caillte acu. Anuraidh, i gcomhluadar scata ban ó Chorca Dhuibhne, fuaireas léamh agus ábhar machnaimh ar chruatan cogaidh nuair a bhí deis agam cuairt a thabhairt ar an dara chathair is mó sa Rúis, cathair ársa Leningrad. Cathair Pheadair a thugtar ar Leningrad anois. Bhí bean óg chumasach de bhunadh na háite mar threoraí againn agus leag sí cúrsa an lae amach dúinn, ó mhaidin go hoíche, sa tslí is go mbaineamair iomlán tairbhe as na laethanta a bhí againn thall. B’éigean dúinn glacadh le malairt plean lá amháin áfach ós rud go raibh an tUachtarán Putin ar an mbaile agus bhí sráideanna áirithe dúnta ag lucht slándála. Chun tairbhe a chuaigh sé dúinn. Tugadh go dtí reilig mhór fhairsing sinn ina raibh na mílte daoine a cailleadh le linn léigear Leningrad curtha. Is fiú cuairt a thabhairt ar reilig i dtíortha eile, má tá an deis sin agat. Tá léargas ar fáil ann ar stair agus ar chultúr na muintire agus is mar sin a bhí againn an lá úd. Chuir fórsaí na Gearmáine agus na Fionnlainne an chathair faoi léigear Meán Fómhair 1941 agus lean an léigear go dtí Eanáir 1944. Suas le milliún duine a fuair bás idir phobal sibhialtach agus airm i rith na 872 lá san. Ocras, galar agus buamáil ón aer faoi ndear a mbás. Bí ag caint ar dhianghlasáil! Cuimhnigh air, 872 lá! Mórchuid olluaigheanna a bhí le feiscint againn sa reilig seo, iad cóirithe néata simplí. Bhí cloch ar gach ceann acu a léirigh dúinn an bhliain a cailleadh na daoine seo go léir le linn 1942, ‘43 agus ’44. Bhí casáin leathana idir na huaigheanna agus cuaillí arda fan na slí le callaraí ag barr gach ceann acu as a craoladh ceol séimh uaigneach. Bhí lasair shíoraí ag dó ar an tslí isteach agus Ionad Mínithe béal dorais go dtugamar cuairt air. Chonaiceamar pictiúirí ansan de dhaoine nach raibh iontu déarfá ach cnámharlaigh. Bhí pictiúr amháin de chorp sínte sa tsneachta ar an tsráid, fé mar a thit sé as a sheasamh agus daoine ag siúl tharais gan féachaint air. Níorbh aon chúis iontais nó strainséar dóibh an bás. Pé beagán bídh a bhí ar fáil bhí dian -chiondáil i bhfeidhm agus bhí pictiúr eile ann de chanta arán, an méid a bhí ar fáil ag duine in aghaidh an lae. Ní choiméadfadh sé spideog ina bheathaigh déarfá. Ach féach… Is cathair álainn í Cathair Pheadair inniu, cathair gheal, ghlan, chultúrtha le hamharchlanna, gailearaithe, institiúidí oideachais, agus ceann de na músaeim is mó cáil ar domhan, an Hermitage. Níor ghá dom dul chomh fada leis an Rúis gan dabht le léargas a fháil ar thionchar ghorta agus chogaidh ar chosmhuintir tír ar bith. Scéal níos gaire dúinn anseo sa bhaile atá tugtha chun cuimhne ar an dteilifís le tamall anuas ná an cruatan agus an ainnise a d’fhulaing muintir na hÉireann le linn an Ghorta Mhóir gan ach ach tréimhse amháin i stair na hÉireann a lua. Níl aon dabht faoi ach go raibh sé diamhar agus is mó scéal eile i stair na hÉireann go raibh cruatan ag baint leis. Ach féach… Is iontach an teacht aniar atá sa duine

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Fá i l te Ireland launched the Dingle Peninsula Visitor Experience Development Plan virtually on Friday last. A recording of the launch can be viewed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =7lK9XAMU0qs&feature=youtu.be The plan, which was developed over the last three years, is the result of work detailed, considered work from the local community, Kerry County Council, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, Údarás na Gaeltachta, the Office of Public Works (OPW), NEWKD LEADER as well as many local tourism operators. The focus is to build on a number of destination development projects that will bring local experiences to life. Links to both Irish and English versions of the plan can be found on: www.failteireland.ie/Wild-Atlantic-Way/ Wild-Atlantic-Way-experience-development/ Dingle.aspx The VEDP also highlights the need to adopt a new focus on sustainable tourism management to collaboratively become a centre of excellence for sustainable tourism and so presents an ideal opportunity to shape a tourism industry that both protects and shares the beauty of Corca Dhuibhne for all to enjoy. The plan sets out a specific action (just one of 59 actions!) to contest international awards to recognise our work in this area and I’m delighted to say

we are off to a really good start on that one as sustainable initiatives on the Dingle Peninsula have recently been showcased by the UN’s Regional Information Centre for Western Europe https://unric.org/en/sustainable-developmentand-the-dingle-peninsula/ as an example of how communities can work together to achieve sustainability for the future. Tús maith, leath na h-oibre mar a deirtear! Fáiltím roimh an phlean seo agus táimíd ag súil go mór bheith páirteach leis an Ghrúpa Forfheidhmiúchan sna blianta atá romhainn chun é a chur i bhfeighim. We’re delighted to be hosting a 12-week online film workshop with fab facilitator Ciara Barret Irish Language Cinema: Culture & Practice. This online course provides an introduction to Irish-language film studies and filmmaking for adults interested in exploring how the Irish language can be utilized via screen media towards a broadening of Irish cultural output – particularly from rural and Gaeltacht areas. Workshops will run bi-weekly on Mondays and Thursdays from 3-6pm, starting on Thursday, 11th February and ending on Thursday, 6th May. Cost is €150 for the full course. This workshop is partially funded by Ealaín na Gaeltachta, which has generously subsidized a number of spaces on the course. These free spaces are open to professional Gaeltacht artists working through the medium of the Irish language. For more info and to book your place go to www.dinglehub. com Táimid an-shásta go mbeidh ceardlanna scannánaíochta 12 seachtaine á sholáthar againn le áisitheoir iontach Ciara Barrett - Tionscal na Scanánnaíochta Trí Ghaeilge : Cultúr agus Cleachtas. Tugann an cúrsa seo, atá á sholáthar ar líne, eolas ar fáil do dhaoine fásta go bhfuil suim acu i staidéar a dhéanamh i réimse na

scannánaíochta trí mheán na Gaeilge agus ar chonas is féidir úsáid a bhaint as an nGaeilge ar scáileáin mar mheán chun cur le líon na dtáirgí cultúrtha trí Ghaeilge– go háirithe ó cheantair tuaithe agus Gaeltachta. Beidh na ceardlanna ar líne agus beidh siad ar siúl gach Luan agus Déardaoin óna 3i.n. go 6i.n., ag tosú ar an 11ú Feabhra agus ag teacht chun críche ar an 6ú Bealtaine. Costas iomlán - €150. Tá na ceardlanna seo ó pháirt mhaoiniú ag Ealaín na Gaeltacht agus urraíocht fhlaithiúil á chur ar fáil ag an eagraíocht sin do roinnt des na spásanna ar an gcúrsa. Tá na spásanna saor in aisce seo ar fáil do ealaíontóirí proifisiúnta atá lonnaithe sa Ghaeltacht agus a fheidhmíonn trí mheán na Gaeilge. Message from Fr Michael PP Dingle. Covid 19 is still with us. It is important to heed advice from health authorities. Stay safe and stay at home when possible. We remember those involved in health care provision and keep them in our prayers. The Diocese of Kerry has organised a Mission to help us keep connected with our faith. The Mission begins next Sunday Jan 24th and continues to Friday Jan 29th. The theme of the Mission is Be Christ’s Joy. It offers an opportunity for people to gather remotely in reflection and in prayer, online and in the home. If you would like to participate in the Mission you are invited to register on dioceseofkerry.ie. You might consider encouraging others to do the same and offering a helping hand to those who might not be familiar with technology. On registration you will get an email each morning of the Mission offering links to all the daily Mission Activities. Speakers include Fr Peter McVerry and Olive Foley. A Mission booklet is available in St Mary’s Church, Dingle and in other churches. A limited number of booklets have been printed. The booklet can also be downloaded from the diocesan website – www.dioceseofkerry.ie It is possible to be part of the Mission without a booklet. Mindful of the recent release of the Report on Mother and Baby Homes, we pray for all who are affected especially those who were involved as mothers and children. We pray for peace and healing in their lives. We pray for all homes and families in our country, especially for situations where life is a great struggle for parents and children. May they get the support that is needed. We continue to pray for those whose lives and livelihoods continue to be affected by the Coronavirus. Our Christmas Crib Appeal donations will go to support the work of Sr Stanislaus Kennedy and West Kerry Care of Aged. We have received €3,099. to date: Míle buíochas. 22 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Mary Quinn O’Connor Mary Ní Chuinn was one of 10 children reared by Peig and Muiris Ó Cuinn, in Corraghráig, in West Kerry. She was the oldest daughter and the first to get married, in 1979 to Mossie Lord Ó Connachubhair, from nearby Baile Reo. Dedicated, hardworking, loyal, and fun loving, Mary had a zest for life and a wide circle of friends. An avid reader, she was known to plough through a novel a day. A gifted cook, Mary supervised a busy Primary school kitchen, and was also front of house Maitre D’ in a large Italian restaurant on the North side, Chicago. She and Mossie reared a fabulous family of five in Chicago - Ciarán, Diarmuid, Neasa, Deirdre and Fionnuala, and they were blessed with their first grandchild, Ciara, in 2020. She was reknowned for her generosity in Chicago, where her house was always open to those in need. She could make an Irish stew stretch to feed the neighbourhood, and made sure children from challenged backgrounds never went hungry or short of clean clothes in her school, always funded from her own pocket. Being a native Irish speaker, Mary loved everything Irish. Cainteoir Gaelainne, deisbhéalach, fileata, bhí Mary dílis dá dúchas, dá hoidhreacht agus dá muintir agus a gaolta. D'ardaíodh a croí ach a dtagadh cuairteoirí ó Chorca Dhuibhne nó a driféaracha chuichi agus bhíodh sí le clos i mbun cainte, cadarála is cleachtan ar fud na comharsanachta. Sadly, Mary succumbed to the ravages of Ovarian cancer on January 14, 2021, aftar an 18 month fearless battle. She will be missed by her 3 brothers and 6 sisters in Ireand, her extensive circle of friends both in Ireland and Chicago, but mostly by her husband and beloved children and granddaughter. Mary is now at peace and reunited with Mamaí agus Daidí and her sister Brídín who died in infancy. Her ashes will come home, in time, and will rest with them in Cill Chuáin.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland Hello to all and hope that you are all keeping safe and well! Despite the short days of January, it is great to start seeing a little stretch in the evenings and to see some stunning videos and pictures of all us out enjoying our local wonderful landscape……. we are so lucky to have so much on our doorstep! Comhghairdeachas on some wonderful recent accomplishments and programmes: Rory Brosnan’s Dingle Virtual Tour: https:// www.dinglesleaheadtours.com/dingle-virtualtour/ which Rory launched in 2020. It is already noted as the first virtual tour of its kind on TripAdvisor.ie! The Dingle Hub’s Dingle Peninsula 2030 project, “lauded by the UN as a shining example of sustainable development" is growing from strength to strength in collaboration with Science Foundation Ireland, SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine, ESB Networks, NEWKD and the Dingle Peninsula community - the initiative aims to transition our beautiful peninsula into a low-carbon society. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance’s own Sam Adeyemi has been awarded the Dingle Skellig Hotel’s ‘Peninsula Personality’ for the week of January 12th. What a great initiative by the ‘Skellig’ and Congratulations to Sam! The Flannery Family of The Fish Box, Chef Nicky Foley of Solas Tapas, Lorcán Ó Cinnéide of the Blasket Heritage Centre and local crab fishermen, Michael Brosnan and John O’Sullivan – all hosted Nevin McGuire last year, “showing Nevin the ropes” and sharing local traditional and Blasket heritage food stories, on Nevin’s Seafood Trails Programme on RTE 1 recently.

Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium’s Picasso Penguins - Have a look at some of the fantastic artwork from the Penguins - the sales from these penguin masterpieces will go towards the vital conservation work done at Dingle Oceanworld “Every little helps”, so let’s help: https://www. dingle-oceanworld.ie/product.../penguin-art/ Fungie’s Kingdom – what a beautiful programme, so emotional, so special and thank you sincerely to everyone who shared their precious memories and stories of Fungie over his 37 years in Dingle. Thank you too to Baz for listening, understanding and “getting it”- "And all the people I met, the stories, it felt like a wake of someone I didn't know," he told the Irish Daily Mirror. The Dingle Peninsula Visitor Experience Development Plan (VEDP) was launched virtually last week by Fáilte Ireland. “The Dingle Peninsula VEDP will support the development of tourism across the Dingle Peninsula, evolving from ‘visitor attraction’ to a sustainable yearround tourism destination. The purpose of this document is to present the destination tourism priorities and development themes for the Dingle Peninsula, organised into a development framework for adoption as a destination action plan for the next five years” (Fáilte Ireland, 2021). Season 2021 thoughts: reviewing all the various news updates from Government and various agencies can be quite a challenge but some conversations are starting to provide some insightful information on what we might expect over the coming months (with the cautionary note, that all thoughts will be subject to how well Covid-19 cases are under control and the timely implementation of the vaccine programme: Hospitality re-opening in time for Easter to include accommodation, dining outlets, activity providers (particularly outdoor). For “wet” pubs, the VFI feel that April or even

May might be when they will be given the green light. “Coast and country” destinations will be in demand with the domestic market so important, as always, for the coming season. International visitors are more likely for the latter months of the year subject to quarantine rules for Ireland. The Taoiseach recently announced that another new feature that is being looked into currently is a “Vaccine Passport” which may be introduced this year for travel and events. Israel has recently proposed its “Green Booklet” which “would offer vaccinated individuals’ significant freedom from Covid-19 safety restrictions. People holding it would no longer have to do the following: • Go into isolation after coming in contact with an infected person. • Go into isolation after international traveling to a Covid “red zone,” or countries with very high infection rates. • Have to be tested before entering certain touristy areas, known as “green islands.”” (CNBC. com). So for now, please continue to “Stay at Home – Fan sa Bhaile”, mind our most vulnerable, support official Level 5 restrictions, listen to the official advice and recommendations of Dr. Holohan and his teams, Government and official agencies. In not supporting them, we are putting lives at risk. Until next time, don’t forget safe social distancing, safe coughing etiquette, washing your hands regularly and wear your face mask! Stay Safe, Shop Local! Ag súil le fáilte a chur romhaibh. If you have any tourism development or marketing queries you would like to discuss confidentially, please contact Caroline at info@bolandmarketing. com .

Sausage and Ricotta Pasta Bake Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

400g chunky pasta (such as a rigatoni) 2 balls of mozzarella, torn into strips 150g ricotta 100g parmesan, grated handful of basil leaves salt and pepper Method Preheat the oven to 190ºC.

A good rich pasta bake is always a winner. The flavour of the sausages, garlic, fennel seeds and the cheese make this a brilliant dish to serve any time of the week and especially midweek. I love adding sausage to pasta dishes, most call for Italian sausages but I am glad to use local well-made sausages. It doesn’t take long to cook this but slow it down and take your time and don’t be in too much of a rush, you will be awarded with flavour. Serve this with a green salad. Ingredients olive oil or rapeseed oil 300g sausages cut into 1-inch pieces 1 small onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp. fennel seeds 1tsp. chili flakes 2 tins of crushed tomatoes

Heat an oven proof pot over medium heat (if you don’t have an oven proof pot, cook it in a pot and then transfer to a deep tray before putting into the oven). Once hot add a little oil and then add the sausage. Let this cook for about 5 minutes or so, stir every now and then but allow it to take on some colour. Turn the heat down slightly and add the onion, garlic, fennel and chili flakes allow this to cook for another 2-3 minutes. Add in the tomatoes. Cook this over a low heat for about 10 minutes, the sauce will slightly thicken as it cooks. While this is cooking add the pasta to boiling salted water and cook for about 12 minutes or according to the packet’s instructions. Once cooked strain the pasta and add to the pot with the sausages and tomatoes. Season with salt and black pepper. Add in the mozzarella and mix in the ricotta. Mix this all well. Add some grated parmesan. Place this in the oven and cook for about 15-20 minutes. Let this cool a little before serving and add a little more parmesan and some basil. Bain Taitneamh As!! Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Ní- ró-shásta atá mórán toisc go bhfuil ordaithe fanacht ‘ge baile. Deirtear linn claoi leis na rialacha ar mhaithe linn féin agus leis an bpobal. Tá gearáin ag daoine eile. Caithfear rialacha diana a bheith againn nó beidh an scéal níos measa. Is baolach go bhfuil daoine óga agus ó gach réimse thíos leis. Bhí daoine á rá níos luaithe go raibh an ceangal ró –dhian agus raibh daoine bochta fágtha ar an bhfán. Anois tá na daoine sin ag rádh ná cuireadh cosc in am. Film Review: Soul Tom Ó Neachtain Soul is the latest attempt from Disney+ to widen their audience base by releasing a thoughtful Pixar effort on Christmas day. It’s surprising that Pixar got to release two feature films in 2020, seeing that cinemas being closed for nearly 10 months. Disney, like most studios, have had their entire future schedule backed up, and it feels like this film may have fallen victim to the overcrowded line-up as the small screen does a disservice to the visual spectacle that is Soul. Soul tells the story of a music teacher who dies abruptly right after he gets his big break. He then

Ach cad fén sioc a sheas seacht mhí nó an ceann a chuir báid i bpoll agus a dhein slad ar thithe i mBlea Cliath. Bheadh mór fháilte róimh tuilleadh spéartha geala.

Bheadh gaol agam léi. Go soillsí Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a caoin anam. I Chicago Mheiriceá a fuair Máire ó Conchúir [Ní Chuinn] bás le déanaí. Bhí an- aithne agam uirthi. Bhí sí ar scoil Bhaile an Mhúraigh agus Ceárd Scoil an Daingin. Cailín mánla- shéimh cleachtúil agus sólásach. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a hanam mánla. Bhí sí pósta le Muiris Ó Conchúir ó Baile Reo. Fuair sí na dea-tréithe ón hathair Muiris agus a máthair Peig.Tháinig sí abhaile do shocraid a tuistí. Bhí clann mhór ann, bail ó Dhia ortha. Bhí an- mheas ar Mháire sa bhaile agus i Chicago. In Iothlainn Dé go raibh hanam caoin cneasta Caid. N’fheadar an mbeidh an lá le foireann Bhleá Cliath, i mbliana. An iad Ciarraí a bhuafaidh agus a bhainfidh treascairt astu. Gach seans gur é an córas a bhí ann anuiridh a bheidh arís i nbliana. B’fhearr go mór an córas roimhe sin. Bheadh caoi ag fóirne an dara babhta a bheith travels between earth and “the great before” trying to get back to his body. Overall, Soul sticks a little too closely to the Pixar formula - a likable protagonist travels to a unfamiliar and beautifully rendered landscape (whether it be the land of the dead or South America) and befriends new and quixotic characters, often with a twist villain thrown in. Although it doesn’t have a twist villain, the safety in the story is the only real issue I have with Soul, and keeps it from achieving the heights of Pixar’s perfect run in the 2000s. The script is written with the studio’s usual wit and creativity and the humour never intrudes on the more important moments in the story. I think that Pixar have peaked animation-wise and are now fully able to render any idea their creatives can come up with and this film is a great showcase of what modern

animation can achieve. The voice-acting and score meet Pixar’s usual standard. The individual moments when Soul focuses completely on the mature themes and characters, generate some of the best material that Pixar have made in the last decade. Soul is up there with Ratatouille as one of the most mature Pixar films, and it’s clearly a labour of love from those behind the scenes. The film might skirt a bit too close to Coco and Inside Out thematically and visually, and never quite reaches their heights. However, Soul is a creative, moving effort that might even get better with time. It’s reminiscent of Pixar’s animated classics in all the best ways. Another win for Disney+.
