Welcome Dear Members: Warmer temperatures are upon us and there is no better time to enjoy our Oasis and Splash pools to cool down and build camaraderie with your fellow members. Summer activities are coming up to include a plethora of July 4th festivities. Wexford Kid’s Camp is also right around the corner, and I am excited that we have developed a partnership with KE Camps, a nationally-renowned company that focuses on Private Country Club camp programs. With well-planned weekly programs, each child will participate in golf, tennis, swim and other recreational activities. If you have a child or grandchild that may be interested, please sign up soon. I am pleased to report from the recent Board of Directors meeting that the bid proposals for the Pickleball Courts are approved, and we will move forward with pre-construction meetings with the selected vendors. We chose JS Construction to assist us in the site construction of the Pickleball Courts and Front Entrance. JS was the selected contractor who assisted us in the most recent pool renovation. Howard B Jones is the contractor selected to build the Pickleball Courts, and install the new lighting on our existing courts and new Pickleball Courts. We have a dedicated webpage on the member portal to keep you up-to-date on the progress of this project for your future enjoyment. The Board of Directors also approved the purchase of a new fleet of golf carts from Club Car. This new fleet will have an updated look with enhanced seats and USB connections. If you are interested in purchasing one of our existing fleet golf carts please contact Scott Hunter, who will be able to assist you.
Ryan Spence Chief Operating Officer
The Board of Directors voted in favor of updating the Club’s mask protocol, which was recently featured in our Wexford updates communication platform. Thank you all for adhering to our mask protocols over the past year as well as the most updated protocol. The safety of all is our top priority while adjusting our policies when appropriate. The struggle to bring back and hire staff is a challenge all hospitality segments face as the economy reopens, but the labor shortage is hitting full-service establishments like Wexford particularly hard. Our management team is working tirelessly to recruit new team members and also provide a variety of services to our membership. As we are experiencing extremely high levels of usage, we ask the membership to be patient as we face these nationwide staffing challenges across all departments. Patience, understanding, and kindness will be the bedrock of our success! The challenges we have faced together have been difficult, but our collective spirit and unwavering commitment to our Club, and each other, keeps our morale high and our focus centered on a better tomorrow.
Regards,
Ryan
HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE The 2021 Hurricane Season has officially begun. The season runs from June – November each year. Our staff is finalizing an updated version of operational protocols, and there is already an updated Hurricane Preparedness Plan available for members. It’s the right time to review the Plan and its valuable information. Check it out on the Member Home Page!
Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, Well, since I just bought my first watermelon of this year, it’s officially summer! And with that theme... Memorial Day – Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer so while we’re making plans to enjoy a beautiful summer here at Wexford, let’s all take a moment to reflect and thank the military veterans and those currently serving that made sure we David Jackson could enjoy our way of life and still President bravely serve to keep us safe today. It’s busy here on Hilton Head and at Wexford; let’s Relax and Enjoy — As we all can tell, it’s very busy on Hilton Head with the tourist season in full swing. It’s also busy here at Wexford, with amenity usage and food and beverage participation at recent year highs. For example: • We had record entries for the Men’s Golf Member-Guest event coming up this fall. Over 90 teams entered the drawing for what was originally 60 spots. The golf staff and golf committee found a way to increase the field this year to 72, which is also a record. Just 5-6 years ago there were not enough entries to fill a 48 team field. • Golf rounds are still running at a record pace and even at Wexford it may be a little difficult to get exactly the tee time you want. Increased interest in golf is a good thing so management and the golf staff (and golf course maintenance staff) are working hard to manage the increased play.

• Harbour use is at record levels. There were over 450 harbor lock operations just in April. It’s getting a little more common to have to wait at the lock when crossing on foot, bicycle or golf cart due to boat traffic through the lock. It is definitely one of the cool benefits of living at Wexford to see all the beautiful boats going in and out of the lock system, so the experience is worth the wait. • Because of great food, new programs and simply more of us here more of the time, it’s busier at the clubhouse. That’s a good thing, too, as more usage leads to more programs, and so on...
All the best,
David
ABOUT THE COVER PHOTO Wexford is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Recently, Cart Barn attendant Mike Eckstrom captured this moment when a rainbow crossed the Wexford sky, just above the driving range.
3 • The Club Times
My point to all of this is we’re busier than ever and while that’s a good thing sometimes the staff may be taxed to serve all of us at once. Not only are there more of us to serve than in recent times, we all read about the difficulty in attracting staff these days. We’re very lucky to have great management and employees and while I personally know how hard management is working to fill all our open positions, it requires a little patience from us all until we get there. So, let’s set our watches to “Island Time”, relax and enjoy this beautiful community.

June 13: Blessing of the Fleet
The Club Times • 8
Last year’s Cobia Tournament winner, Mike Moses
The Blessing of the Fleet is a semi-formal, annual event to bestow blessings on every boat in Wexford for a safe boating season.
Chaplain Anthony Giunta of the US Coast Guard in Savannah will provide the blessing, and we will have a brief address from Commander Brendan J. Hilleary. Also, the Commander of the Hilton Head Coast Guard Auxiliary will speak about what their civilian organization does to enhance boating safety. Whether you own a boat or not, the Blessing is a neat ceremony and is followed by cocktails and dinner. Please make your dinner reservations with Jennifer.
June 20: FloatTails Join us for the first FloatTails of the season. What is FloatTails? It’s Docktails in the river on boats rafted together. Boats will leave Wexford Harbour around 4pm and head over to Bryan’s Creek, which is a short trip across Calibogue Sound. There, we raft up to share appetizers and friendship as we hop from boat to boat, sampling each boat’s nautical fare. As the sun starts to set, we head back to Wexford while there is still plenty of light. Please sign up with Mark in the Harbour Center. Don’t have a boat and want to go? Sign up with Mark and we’ll try to get you on a boat!

Mother Nature gave us a perfect Spring day with a nice breeze and lots of sunshine. Once the boats were rafted up, all participated in a Docktails-type affair with lots of wonderful food and beverages. All in all, an exceptional day with lots of food, fun and camaraderie.

July 28: Boys and Girls Clubs Outing Boat owners: Help us show the boys and girls a fun time on a boat. We’re looking for volunteers with boats to take 3 to 4 kids from the Boys & Girls Club out on their boats. Each boat/ group of kids will have a chaperone from the B&G Club aboard. This will be a quick trip down to near Harbour Town, maybe seeing some dolphins, before coming back to Wexford for hot dogs and hamburgers. We do this every year and the kids really enjoy it! Bogey Boys Annual Awards by Richard Berthelsen
T
he Bogey Boys men’s golf group formed in January of 2017 by a small group of us who didn’t have low enough handicaps for Jim Hicks’ Thursday group. We had nine players at our inaugural event, and now it has grown to almost 40 on our mailing list.
The Bogey Boys Match Play Final was held recently, with Jon Harrigan (white shirt) defeating Jeff Meyers (red) to become Champion. Semifinalists were Richard Anderson and Ted Urquhart, who also took this photo. our group since we prefer that guys get worse each year, not better. And Pete “the Admiral” Halsey won Best Bogey Boy Ensemble. We also presented our BBW Match Play Champion Award to Deputy Commissioner Jon Harrigan, who won our match play tournament earlier in May by defeating runnerup Jeff Meyers in the final match. Cal Navis won the Tournament last year, and his name is also on the trophy. The dinner also featured
a large, specially prepared cake designed by Sandy Berthelsen. The frosting design on the top depicted a golf green with an adjacent sandtrap, trees, bushes, and a lagoon with an alligator in it. There were little white balls in the sandtrap, in the bushes and the trees around the green, and even in the alligator’s mouth in the lagoon. But in typical Bogey Boy fashion, there were no golf balls actually on the green.

We have some unique approaches to the game, like our one “choosigan” per side rule, which is like a Muilligan except the golfer chooses between the first tee shot and the second. Our most important rule is our “no snivelin’’ rule designed to keep complaints to a minimum. Unfortunately, it’s more honored in the breach than the observance. Another rule is that Jon Harrigan’s dog Louie — also a BBW member — has the deciding vote to break any ties in voting on new rules, according to bylaws. We also have an annual Awards Dinner and Business Meeting; which was held May 23. Our most prominent award, the Bogey Boy of the Year Award, went to Larry Ricciardelli. Brent Ramsey won our Most Improved Bogey Boy Award, which is a dubious distinction for

TIPS FROM THE GOLF PRO:
The Club Times • 12
Bunker Shot: Sweep the Box I see lots of players take too small a swing and hit too far behind the ball on bunker shots. Try this simple drill: Draw a box around the ball. The ball is placed near the back of the box closer to where you strike the sand. Take a big swing and hit closer to the ball and “remove the box.” Finish on your lead foot.

June Clinics PICKLEBALL Join us every Friday from 11am to Noon. These clinics will focus on all aspects of Pickleball, from scoring to strategy! Spots are limited, please sign up in advance.
POWER HOUR
Take your game to the next level by adding slice and drop volleys to your arsenal. The most common complaint we hear from net players is the fear of being lobbed. By adding slice to your
groundstrokes and drop volleys to your net game, you are sure to make your opponent run rather than you doing all the running! Go see Patrick and Mike to find out how to hit these important shots.
PICKLEBALL TIP:
Stay ready!
Pickleball is a fast-paced sport — it can go from a slow dink rally to rapid fire volleying at any moment. That’s why it’s important to stay engaged in the point and keep your paddle up and ready, especially around the kitchen. There are several variations on the paddle ready position so you’ll have to experiment and see what works for you. However, the key points are the same: • Keep your knees bent and back straight • Hold you paddle at roughly chest height • Make sure your paddle is out in front of your body rather than tucked in
13 • The Club Times
Join us every Friday from 9-10am for a FREE ball machine, music and live ball clinic. This clinic is open to all levels of players, and is a great, relaxed way for new members to meet other players.

Wexford in Bloom
ello, Wexford members and residents — Spring is upon us! The grass is green, birds are chirping, and things are starting to take shape for a beautiful summer ahead here at Wexford. Along with spring comes our annual flower change out! There are a lot of familiar flowers being put in this year such as, Vinca, Begonia, Croton, Plumbago and Zinnia, along with a few new additions. Let’s focus on two of those new additions to our landscaping: Celosia and Rudbeckia. A crowd favorite, the Celosia (Intenz Purple) is an annual flower that normally grows 14-16 inches tall with a spread of 12-14 inches. They are great for planting in full sun or partial sun. They love about 8 hours of sunlight a day and are very drought resistant. This annual sports a unique deep purple flower that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
REMINDER: AERIFICATION The Golf Course will be closed for Aerification from June 7-18. The other new addition to the annual mix is the Rudbeckia (Rising Sun). This annual is very heat and drought tolerant. The flowers thrive in full sun but will also do nicely in partial shade. This annual grows about 1824 inches in height and 12-18 inches in width. This annual produces a large blooming flower that is a bright yellow outer edge, with a rich orange middle that attracts a verity of birds, bees, and butterflies. As you travel around Wexford, take a moment to enjoy its beauty that we are so fortunate to experience living in this area. Perhaps you would like to plant these in your landscaping too!
