KIDS

Only By Sandra Iskander

It is often referred to as the City of Romance and as the fashion capital of the world but Paris is also a great playground for children with the city offering an abundance of things to discover and enjoy.

For ankle-biters French luxury ready-to-wear brand for children Catimini has teamed up with ready-towear brand Heimstone for a capsule collection for the warmer season. The collection includes pieces for babies and children with items inspired by Heimstone designer, Alix Petit’s desire to reinterpret her brand’s iconic models such as the Java dress and the Kaya blouse.

Visiting Paris with children makes a trip to Disneyland a must, and the happiest place on earth does not disappoint with its magical atmosphere right from the moment you step foot through its gates with the soft tunes of your favourite shows guiding you in. Disneyland is not just a wonderful rendezvous for children to meet all their favourite characters, it is also a fun-filled destination with light-hearted rides and more daring attractions for the older kids. Teens can give themselves the fright of their lives and step into the Tower of Terror while younger visitors are invited to take a seat in more subdued rides such as the Ratatouille ride, which takes them through a Parisian restaurant as seen through the eyes of a cheeky rat. The highlight of a day spent in Disneyland is of course the Disney Illuminations show where Sleeping Beauty’s Castle is used as the backdrop to a wonderful light and sound show that sees all your children’s favourite characters projected on the castle before a colourful fireworks display with Disney’s biggest musical hits including Frozen’s Let It Go bringing it all to a fabulous end. There is no denying of course that Paris is the fashion capital, though that doesn’t mean that the youngsters are forgotten about, with tweens and teens in particular in for a treat with a visit to Adidas’s flagship store. The world’s largest Adidas takes pride on the most beautiful avenue in the world, the Champs-Elysées, and once inside the sportswear brand impresses with not only its iconic products including Stan Smith but also limited edition collections such as Yeezy.

Meet Numérobis, discover Attention Menhir, an immersive cinema experience with the park screening its very first 4D film, and catch the all-new magic show at the Panoramix theatre. The park is also holding festivities in celebration of Easter on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of April with an Easter egg hunt organised in the Village Gaulois. Parc Astérix Be sure to visit www.parcasterix.fr/en for all opening hours. There are direct shuttles available from the Louvre in front of the Palais Royal metro station (99 rue de Rivoli, 1st), alternatively you could take the RER B train to Charles de Gaulle airport terminal 1 then take the Parc Astérix shuttle from platform A3.

For curious children, Europe’s biggest science museum, the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, is worth a visit to discover the science behind everything big and small. Temporary exhibitions and workshops are organised throughout the year inviting children to learn about the body, animals and even optical illusions. Playing out until 2020 is the Body and Sport exhibition that illustrates the effects of sport on the body, with a closer, scientific look taken at the body sculpted by sport. Another temporary exhibition taking place is Microbiota, which takes a closer look at our digestive organs and gut flora. HAUTE

Tea

By Sandra Iskander Paris is known for its luxurious hotels, stunning avenues and delicious pastries, and there is no better way to experience such decadency than with high tea à la Française.

A wonderfully colourful address where visitors are invited to indulge in champagne, tea and creamy pastries is the recently opened Grand Café Fauchon. Looking onto the Place de la Madeleine, the eatery serves their Tea Time menu from 3.30 to 5.30pm, daily, with the highlight here being of course Bisou-Bisou, the signature dessert. And from the 2nd to the 7th of April, ladies can add spark to their look with the Cils de Marie pop-up salon in a plush suite of the hotel. The Cils de Marie x Fauchon L’Hôtel beauty suite lets you enjoy a hot beverage and sweet treats while getting eyelash extensions applied. The beauty suite is open from 9am to 9pm, and is upon reservation by simply calling 06 58 07 77 79.

In the house’s Left Bank boutique, Hermès gives tea amateurs an original and luxurious moment to savour the refined beverage. While Le Plongeoir does not serve a traditional high tea, it certainly doesn’t get any more haute than sipping tea at Hermès. The tea salon, which overlooks the boutique housed in what was once the historical Lutetia swimming pool, offers a menu that boasts a wide selection of tea, ranging from pure origins to flavoured options. Try the Rose Nepal white tea that blends rosebuds from Morocco and tea from Nepal, or if you appreciate a green variation try the Jasmine option with notes of jasmine, magnolia and tuberose. The chic tea salon also serves a modest menu of cakes and tarts to be enjoyed with your hot tea. Reservations are highly recommended. Under the beautiful glass dome of the Shangri-La Hotel restaurant, La Bauhinia, visitors to the city, are welcome to enjoy a high tea like no other. Remembering that vegans also have a sweet tooth, pastry chef Michaël Bartocetti has created a vegan high tea menu that is appreciated by vegans and non-vegans alike. Served from Monday to Friday from 3.30 to 5.30pm and from 4pm on weekends, the menu is a mouth-watering invitation to sample the Black Forest, a fresh take on the classic cake, fruit tarts and the 100% Vanille, a delicious vanilla on vanilla dessert with a vanilla shortbread mounted with vanilla cream and topped off with lashings of a light vanilla mousse.

Another quite famous address in the French capital where Parisians head to when in the mood for something sweet is Carette. This historical tea salon, which first opened its doors in 1927, is famed for its selection of macarons. While there is no official tea time menu, this is a must-visit nonetheless for a create-your-own high tea if you will with finger sandwiches and pastries but the real star here is the macaron so skip the bells and whistles go straight to the counter and choose from the rows and rows of flavoured macarons, raspberry, pistachio, chocolate, vanilla, and salted caramel. Known for its hot chocolate, Angelina is a wonderful place in Paris to settle in for a little bit of French dessert magic. The iconic tea salon is adorned with gold mouldings, stepping you back into the Belle Epoque to enjoy high tea, as only the French know how. The salon offers a set-menu from 3pm with an assortment of savoury canapés and a selection of pastries that can be enjoyed with a choice of champagne, tea, coffee or of course the house’s signature hot chocolate. SHOPPING For Him

Earning their Stripes French fashion brand Le Minor offers gentlemen a whole wardrobe inspired by the sea. Founded in Brittany, the ready-to-wear brand prides itself on being 100% made in France and offers shoppers an array of items emblazoned with chic nautical stripes. The brand, which for many years was the official supplier to the National Marine Corps, offers sweaters, t-shirts, cardigans and even beanies that bear the house’s stripes that make for a perfect wardrobe addition for seaside getaways. . - S.I. Ulysse Nardin once again takes us to the sea with its new Marine Mega Yacht watch finely crafted in platinum and brought out in a limited edition of just 30 pieces. Regulated by a flying tourbillon, it carries on in the tradition of all that is nautical, a hallmark of the house that was founded in 1846 and that has been specialised in making timepieces for sailors since then. And as its name implies, the Marine Mega Yacht has been designed with the yachtsman in mind. And all that is nautical is found in the details like the flying tourbillon, which is encased in a cage that is decorated with a propeller with a finely crafted anchor in the middle. The house has introduced a revolutionary information display to optimise the yacht’s choice of anchorage points when mooring in addition to its analogue time display and a three-dimensional presentation of the phases of the moon. The watch has a power reserve of 80 hours and is water resistant to 50 metres. - P.V. Available at Galeries Lafayette 40 blvd Haussmann (9th), 01 42 82 34 56 24 W HE R E PA R I S I A P R I L 2019

Sweat it Out Working out has never looked so good. For the first time in Paris a gym has opened up in a historical monument, inviting sports enthusiasts into a unique space to work out. The posh gym chain, L’Usine, has opened its third address in the Gare Saint-Lazare train station in the heart of the city. The well-equipped gym is an open invitation to working out a sweat in style in the French capital. - S.I.

Green Beauty Our beauty routine is going green with the help of the new Le Green Market space at Printemps de la Beauté. The famous department store has just inaugurated a new space in its beauty section dedicated to organic beauty products. The green area puts the spotlight on brands that are kind to both our skin and the environment such as Zao, an organic and vegan cosmetics brand packaging all its beauty products in reusable bamboo palettes so you can simply buy refills for your blush, powder or highlighter. Le Green Market also welcomes Antipodes into its fold with the brand hailing from New Zealand offering organic and vegan cosmetics and skincare products including the Heavenly Body Oil with avocado oil, lavender and jasmine petal. - S.I. The Place London in Paris The recent opening of Simon Burstein’s Parisian branch of The Place London marks quite the fashionable coup for fashionistas in the fashion capital. The multi-brand boutique offers ladies a wonderful selection of brands found exclusively at The Place London including Poustovit, a contemporary brand that draws from its Ukrainian origins with ethnic prints. Other brands found here include Ioanna Salea for Italian-made bags and Alice Archer for embroidered dresses. - S.I. PRIVATE SPA

n innovative young French company gives you the opportunity to bring the total spa experience into your home or wherever you might happen to be. How to Spa is the concept designed by founder Maud Ganry Boutaric a cosmetic engineer with a degree in spa management. After working in some of the leading hotel spas in Paris, she decided to recreate the spa experience with all of its rituals and cosmetics to take to wherever someone was. The journey begins on the How to Spa website where the visitor is guided step by step into how to relax and take in the well being experience on one’s own through tutorials and relaxation and wellness kits conceived by spa professionals.

stretching along with recommendations for ethical organic products that re-create the spa experience like cosmetics, finely made scarves, pillows and blankets, teas and herbal teas as well as books. The website enables you to compose your kit according to your needs. How to Spa suggests that visitors to the site first determine the result they wish to obtain choosing between a cocooning experience, an energy boost or detox. Next on the agenda is to say where you are taking the spa to, the home, work, to your hotel, in the plane or the train or on public transportation.

On the site you can read the tutorials online or watch a video for tips for self-massage and

“I bring the spa to you,” says Mrs Ganry Boutaric. “People love do-it-yourself as long as

You can custom compose your own kit or opt for one that is ready to order. Only ethical and fair trade products are employed in the kits and each kit comes in three different sizes.

they are guided. I propose the care methods and the products that are adapted to your needs.” There are the pure organic essential oils from Les Huilettes, a French brand of natural cosmetics, which are relaxing for the face. There are fair trade scarves from India, which she recommends to wear when travelling imbibed with a few drops of essential oils for a relaxing trip. A tutorial booklet is free with each kit, which is placed in a free reusable tote bag handmade in France with upcycled materials, and so consequently each bag is unique.

www.howtospa.com How to Spa will be presenting its tutorials and relaxation kits on April 13th and 14th from 10am to 5pm at the Free Persephone beauty salon. 66 blvd Raspail (6th), 01 42 22 13 04

Picture Perfect It is a mythical ensemble of photographs that are on display in the courtyard garden space of the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, an exhibition paying tribute to women in a show fittingly entitled Femmes, Je vous Aime (Women, I Love You) in a nod to the hit song by JeanLouis Dabadie and Julien Clerc. It is a splendid array of some of the most well-known of fashion and celebrity photographs including Marilyn Monroe by Bert Stern, Audrey Hepburn by Douglas Kirkland, Brigitte Bardot by Russell Young, who would sprinkle his pictures with diamond dust, and the Le Baiser (The Kiss) between Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg by Tony Frank. And there are, too, groundbreaking works on show, of note, the spectacular work by the American photographer Ormond Gigli who had the boldness to have 43 women pose in the windows of a building in New York City in 1960 on the eve of its demolition. The show, organised by Art Photo Expo Production, also presents works that have been created exclusively for the exhibition. - P.V.

Fashion in the Street The groundbreaking fashion photographs of the American photographer William Klein are being exhibited in the bucolic setting of Bercy Village in a show entitled In & Out of Fashion. The New York native who lived in Paris after World War II and studied art with Fernand Léger is known for his original and unusual approach to photography, an approach marked by high-contrast photographs. He played with the grain of the film, offering a unique artistic approach to both his fashion and street photography. “My motto, anything goes,” explains the photographer who is also an acclaimed filmmaker. The show brings together some 30 vintage and contemporary prints and offers a retrospective look at Klein’s work, work that often took place in the street. The show is being presented with the collaboration of the Polka Galerie and the participation of the William Klein atelier. - P.V. Finding Filiger It was out to the sea swept, somewhat mystical Breton village of Le Pouldu that the group of artists of the Ecole de Pont-Aven would gravitate. The artist’s colony brought together artists from different horizons and in their midst was Paul Gauguin and the lesser known figure of Charles Filiger, who would draw inspiration from Italian Primitive painting. Associated with the Symbolist movement, Charles Filiger would come to Le Pouldu, frequent Gauguin and along with him opt for strong, stylised shapes and in doing so developed a personal style in his landscapes of Brittany and religious-inspired works. Some 80 paintings by Filiger emanating from private and public collections have been brought together in a major exhibition at the Galerie Malingue offering a glimpse into the too little known world and works of the artist. - P.V. A History of Light The Orient as viewed by major artists is taking centre stage in an exhibition entitled L’Orient des Peintres: Du Rêve à la Lumière (The Near East of Artists, from Dream to Light). The show, being held at the Musée Marmottan Monet, brings together some 50 masterpieces from leading collections in Europe and the United States. The paintings in the show largely cover the Mediterranean Orient of the French colonial empire and the works often embody an ideal of feminine beauty, rendered for example in the Odalisques of Ingres. There are exceptional works by Théodore Chassériau including the Interior of a Harem and Moroccan Dancers, the Handkerchief Dance. And there are, too, the depictions of the harsh reality of life in an arid climate like Eugène Fromentin’s Le Pays de la Soif (The Land of Thirst). A selection of landscapes and scenes from the 19th and early 20th century round out the show. - P.V. Showing through to July 21st 2 rue Louis-Boilly (16th), 01 44 96 50 33

A Collector’s Collection Delacroix, Manet, Gauguin, Monet and Picasso are just some of the artists whose masterpieces are being presented at the Musée Maillol in an exhibition entitled the Collection Bührle. Regarded as one of the most prestigious private collections in the world, this ensemble was brought together in Zurich between 1936 and 1956 and offers a panorama of French art from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Emil Georg Bührle acquired more than 600 works of art and some 60 precious masterpieces from this collection are being presented in Paris for the first time. The works span the major movements of modern art ranging from Impressionism to the Nabis and the Fauves. Themes in the works on display include the dancers of Degas, a still life from Picasso and a summer in Bougival from Sisley. - P.V. Creativity, refined taste and divine décor unfold in tents set up in the Tuileries Garden with some 60 galleries from France, Europe, Asia and the United States coming together to exhibit an astounding variety of art and design in beautifully appointed stands conceived as personal collections and set up in a muted atmosphere. A Tribute to the Tribal The tribal arts are converging on Paris in the galleries in the Beaux-Arts and Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhoods for a journey into the arts of Africa, the Americas, the Himalayas, Indonesia and Oceania through galleries specialised in these arts. The event, Paris Tribal, brings together both permanent galleries and guest galleries from France or abroad to exhibit in the local galleries. Among the flurry of exhibitions being presented this year is a show devoted to musical instruments in the ethnographic art of Asia from the Asie Animiste gallery while the Galerie Flak is offering an adventurous journey on the trail of Captain Cooke in the Pacific. Myriad and Monumental The monumental works of the French artist Philippe Pasqua are being showcased in the magnificent gardens and exhibition space of the Galerie - Le Storage, in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône in the greater Paris region. Striking tree sculptures like his six metre-high Golgotha in bronze and concrete, his Olive Tree in bronze, which will remain at the Storage, a seven-metre high shark-looking fish in stainless steel and huge drawings of faces are among the surprising works the visitor encounters in this exhibition entitled Versus. The show brings together some 30 of the artist’s works ranging from his first paintings on jute to the bronze sculptures while the gigantism of his subjects offers an almost physical experience. Run to Ran The chic 8th arrondissement has recently welcomed a new bar and restaurant that is fast becoming one of the French capital’s popular eateries for Parisians and visitors alike. Ran, the latest addition from Moma Group and Blackcode, the same people behind Kinugawa and everyone’s favourite Peruvian restaurant and club Manko, is a great address for delicious Japanese cuisine and a fantastic rendezvous if you are looking for a restaurant with a real atmosphere to relax, enjoy a cocktail and get a front row seat to some fun people watching. A fabulous playlist sets the tone with Kylie, Dalida and even The Turtles playing in the background while the staff, dressed in red with Mugler-like shoulder pads, strut around the historical monument. On the menu, tuna tartare with caviar, miso-glazed eggplant, fried prawns served with a caramelised shallot sauce, and the house signature dish, black cod glazed with miso. Ran is a fun combination of greattasting food, friendly service and chic fashionable touches that make Parisian tables such an attraction that everyone wants to experience, because here it isn’t just about the food but the whole ambiance, especially in the evenings, and particularly on Thursday nights. Reservations are advised. – S.I. Ran 8 rue d’Anjou (8th), 01 40 17 04 77

Sharing is Caring at Roxo The historical Les Bains club, which knew frequent visits by Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol and Yves Saint Laurent, reopened its doors back in 2015 with a makeover that included becoming a 5-star hotel. The hotel’s restaurant has since gone through a makeover of its own, and with a new restaurant comes a new talented chef. Chef Bruno Grossi hails from Brazil and has brought a touch of his native land to the contemporary tapas-style menu found at Roxo, a convivial restaurant promoting sharing dishes. Start with the tapioca fried fingers with Comté cheese drizzled with molasses, and the falafel balls served on a bed of creamy sauce with a hint of capers before sharing the grilled octopus served with a homemade tomato sauce and sprinkled with Iberian ham, or the grilled duck breast with horseradish. Vegetarians and vegans are equally spoiled here with grilled broccolini served on a bed of puréed carrot and dressed in a Ponzu sauce, and a delicious and refreshing dish of creamy burrata cheese sitting beautifully on sweet beetroot and seasoned with mandarin sauce. And the best way to enjoy tapas is with great drinks, and Roxo boasts a stand-alone bar that boasts a cocktail menu that includes all the classics and some quite original signature drinks. - S.I. Food Pairing with Beer On a quiet street in the very busy 11th arrondissement of the city, not far from the animated Rue Oberkampf, is where visitors to the French capital will find Paris’s first bistro specialising in craft beer, La Fine Mousse. Bringing a more sophisticated look to the oft considered “less refined” beverage, the restaurant offers an elaborate menu of artisanal beer that seduces the palate by creating a food pairing menu, introducing the humble beer as a wonderful alternative to wine when fine dining. The menu here changes on a regular basis but could include dishes such as tuna tartare seasoned with sesame oil and wasabi cream, which matches beautifully with a rhubarb-flavoured beer, or cod served with beetroot and a buttery watercress sauce, with its flavours brought out by Arthur, a Belgian-style beer brewed by Hill Farmstead. For dessert finish with crushed meringue mixed in a tangy cream of lemon, paired with a tropical beer with notes of passion fruit. The restaurant is open Monday to Friday for lunch and dinner, and is open on weekends for lunch only. – S.I.

Back to Basics Christophe Joulie, head of the restaurant group named after his father Gérard, is one of the shrewdest and most innovative restaurateurs in Paris today. This is why he decided it was time to return one of his company’s most beautiful addresses to its original vocation as a bouillon, a type of popular and very affordable restaurant that thrived in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th century. So the brasserie formerly known as Montparnasse 1900 has been given a new name, Bouillon Chartier Montparnasse, along with a renovation of its magnificent art nouveau décor and a new menu. “The idea here is to offer a good quality feed for modest prices with friendly expedient service in a convivial atmosphere,” Joulie explains. What this means is a very easy-on-the-wallet menu that includes dishes like oeuf mayo (2€), céleri rémoulade (2,70€), choucroute alsacienne (10,80€), veal Marengo (11,20€), roast chicken (9€), profiteroles (4,20€) and chocolate mousse (3,10€). Oysters and Wine Overlooking the Place de la Madeleine, an historic hub for gourmet food shopping and dining in Paris, Amélie, the sleek new restaurant, showcases the oysters of Amélie, a producer in the Marennes Oléron region on France’s Atlantic Coast. It’s a great place to pop in for a tray of freshly shucked bivalves, but what makes it a real treat for fans of this shellfish are the superbly inventive oyster dishes on the menu by young British chef Sam Kazemi, including oysters flambéed in soy sauce with ginger and spring onions and smoked oysters with chestnuts. There are many other wonderful things to eat in addition to oysters, though, including grilled octopus with anchovy cream, tahini and capers, scallops with saffron risotto and tuna with clementine and bananas. Great wine list and friendly service, too. Open daily. – A.L.

Not Just Any Bistro Chardenoux, one of the prettiest and most historic bistros in Paris, has been given a new menu by chef-owner Cyril Lignac and a visual makeover by trendy London-based interior architect Martin Brudnizki. This was a complicated commission for Brudnizki, because this 1908 vintage Belle Epoque restaurant with bevelled glass and mahogany partitions, a big zinc bar and delicate floral mouldings on the ceiling was already so beautiful. The designer has succeeded with subtlety, however, including plush ribbed banquettes, a harlequin floor and a pretty mural of trees overhead. Similarly, Lignac’s new mostly seafood menu replaces bistro classics with an array of delicious dishes like prawns with chipotle mayonnaise and oysters with grilled sausages to start, salmon in Thai bouillon, langoustine ravioli, scallops with Jerusalem artichokes and black truffles and sea bass cooked in a crust of salt for two. Expect a chic young crowd, as this is one of the most fashionable restaurants in Paris right now, and with charming service. – A.L. A Legend is Back Michelin three-star chef Gérald Passedat of Le Petit Nice in Marseille brings a delicious taste of Provence to the storied recently reopened Brasserie Lutetia at the legendary Hôtel Lutetia on the Left Bank. The duplex dining room has a casually chic décor with hand-painted columns, mocha leather banquettes, wooden armchairs and a black-and-white marble floor, and there’s also counter seating for people dining on their own. Start off with some freshly shucked oysters or maybe a fritto misto (deep-fried fish and vegetables) or an aïoli des familles, fish and vegetables with garlic mayonnaise, and then sample succulent dishes like Marseille-style fish meatballs, Parmentier de poulpe (octopus shepherd’s pie), or veal stuffed cannelloni. An exceptionally good bouillabaisse is also served at dinner only. Expect a glamorous crowd and great people watching during an excellent meal. - A.L. Sunday Brunch The French haven’t exactly grasped the true idea of brunch but they get an A for effort with the new brunch menu on offer at BB, the Jean Imbert restaurant at the über-trendy Blanche sports club. The celebrity chef has put together a menu for Sunday brunch that resembles more of a healthy lunch that ends with a naughty dessert. Avo toast is of course de rigueur but don’t expect Bloody Marys or Mimosas to wash down your late «breakfast», here you can choose between a clean green juice or the trusty OJ to accompany slices of buttery brioche served with butter and jam, followed by side servings of carrot salad, quinoa, leek salad drizzled with French vinaigrette and eggs topped with spinach and mushrooms served with your choice of open sandwiches, choose the smashed avocado and eggs, curried crab meat and eggplant, or the beef and kabocha toast. The set menu ends with a choice between waffles served with chocolate sauce and light Chantilly cream or French toast made with panettone accompanied by a delicious caramel sauce. With an outdoor dining area this is one brunch spot that is proving very popular with Parisians so be sure to reserve. – S.I. BB Blanche 21 rue Blanche (9th), 01 40 40 21 61

French cheese. They say there are more than 1000 types of French cheese to be discovered and in Printemps du Goût you can get a taste of this savoury treasure thanks to Le Fromage, the cheese deli on the 8th floor of the famous Parisian department store. Cheesemonger Laurent Dubois, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, the prestigious honour bestowed on France’s best craftsmen, offers a mouth-watering display of 80 different French cheeses that you can select from to enjoy on a platter, with crusty baguette bread and a glass of French wine. The casual eatery, which clearly puts the spotlight on cheese, also serves a selection of croque-monsieur sandwiches, each made with a different cheese, and onion soup made with aged Comté cheese. – S.I. Miming a Night Out With 18 characters up his sleeve, Francis Périn, aka Mime F.P.A.O., and his alter egos will be performing on the 3rd of April at the Théâtre du Temps. A long appreciated art in France, miming knows no language barriers and is an original way to take in a performance while visiting the French capital. The multi-faceted mime, who has been performing since he was 23 has fine-tuned his art, using different techniques, including mime, pantomime and living statue, to portray his different characters. - S.I. ENTERTAINMENT Hotel Bars

Be Careful What You Wish For The City of Light has introduced another bar into its nightly mix, courtesy once more to Hotel 1K who is already home to the speakeasy La Mezcaleria and a Pisco bar. This time though the hotel is hiding a speakeasy bar within a speakeasy. The secret bar, La Malicia is accessed through La Mezcaleria, behind an unmarked door. Simply present yourself and you will be guided through a dark space that will lead to what is now our favourite bar. Once inside you are presented with 7 cards, each with a different potion, while an eighth card reveals the bar’s champagne menu. You can either choose your potion based on what you wish for, wealth, beauty, chance or to keep the evil eye away, or you can choose your choice of spirit and see what will be revealed to you. If you prefer vodka-based drinks then wealth will be served to you mixed in with champagne and lemon, and if you are wanting to stave off the evil eye then be prepared to sip on a potion of gin and olive oil. - S.I. The recently reopened Grand Powers hotel spells a new rendezvous for cocktail hour. The hotel bar is inviting with its cosy ambiance and its voluptuous velvet chairs, creating a boudoir-like atmosphere to enjoy a cocktail or two after a day spent shopping along the Avenue des Champs-Elysées and the neighbouring Avenue Montaigne. The bar’s signature Pisco Sour cocktail is perfectly mixed but if you prefer a more sage glass of wine then you will be spoiled for choice with the bar’s menu. If you are feeling peckish be tempted by the cheese platter supplied by French cheesemonger Xavier Thuret. - S.I. ADVERTORIAL

“Learning to be French through Comedy” As tourists or expats in Paris there are some quirks we have all noticed among the Parisians, the way they march to their destinations, their constant pouting and the way they order at restaurants. Olivier Giraud has too, noticed that the Parisians are unique in their behaviour, and has decided to bring all those idiosyncrasies to light. Born in Bordeaux, Olivier moved to Paris to study hotel management and after graduating he moved to the Unites States where he managed a restaurant of a 5-star hotel. After four years, and many soul-searching nights, he decided to return to France and follow his real dream of becoming a

comedian. Having experienced the cultural differences between the Parisians and Americans while in Florida, and having observed for himself the tourists of all nationalities in Paris, he decided to not shy away from the hardhitting questions of how one becomes a real Parisian. How do you grab a waiter’s attention in a café? In the metro, what do you do if you see an older lady or a pregnant woman? And how do you behave in a cab? Putting together a one man show, How to become a Parisian in one hour?, the stand-up comic will leave you rolling in your seat from

laughter and 100% prepared for any situation in the City of Light. The ultimate Parisian theatre experience created by Olivier Giraud! Enjoyed by more than 500 000 spectators, this show is much more than a stand-up comedy! It’s a hilarious, incisive and visual observation of the Parisian behaviour! Performed 100% in English all year round in one of the most beautiful Italian Renaissance style theatres (600 seats) located in the lively heart of Paris... Ohlala! Non-stop laughter from a real Parisian guaranteed to leave you wanting more. This is THE PERFECT GUIDE to enjoy Paris and the Parisians!

Paris Metro Paris is crossed by 14 Métro lines and five RER (express suburban) lines, all numbered and named for their final destination (terminus). Did you know that there are 300 stations that make up Paris’ metro system?

80 W HE R E PA R I S I A P R I L 2019

Each Métro trip requires one ticket regardless of how many transfers you make, though you must buy an extra ticket for the RER outside the city limits. Keep your ticket until you exit.

Tickets are sold in all stations and in cafés (tabacs) with a ticket sign outside, single (1.90€/2€ if purchased on a bus) or by 10 (un carnet - 14.50€). This map includes the new tramway line.

“Paris Visite” passes offer unlimited travel on the Métro and buses (1day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day). The Métro and RER start running at 5:30am, and stop around 1 am.

While the Métro is an extremely safe way to travel, watch out for pickpockets in crowded trains and stations. For information in English, call the transportation company (RATP) directly at 08.92.68.41.14.

My Paris

CORALIE GEOFFRION

CONCIERGE AT HOTEL D’AUBUSSON PARIS

Musée d’Orsay

Paris is known around the world as the City of Light, what would you recommend visitors do in the evening to really take in its beauty? I would ask for a car with a driver to pick me up after dinner and ride through the city, there is not much traffic in the evening and Paris is beautiful at night with all its illuminated monuments. As a culinary capital what are three of your favourite restaurants that you would recommend our readers to try? Les Climats for a gastronomic meal, extraordinary wine list from Burgundy to embellish dishes. Le Reminet for a romantic moment, near Notre-Dame. Prosper & Fortunée for a unique experience, very tiny place with 1 person only that cooks, serves and shares his passion. What are the top three monuments not to be missed while in Paris? The Sainte-Chapelle with its breath-taking stained glass windows. Musée d’Orsay with its gallery of sculpture and Impressionist area, the building itself is worth the visit. The Foundation Louis Vuitton for the beauty of its architecture. 82 W HE R E PA R I S I A P R I L 2019

Les Climats

If our readers wanted to spend their day shopping, would you recommend they do so on the Left Bank or the Right Bank? Both of course, however, on the Right Bank the Rue Saint-Honoré is filled with the nicest boutiques, the Marais area combines shopping and picturesque sightseeing. Should you prefer to shop on the Left Bank, I recommend you go around the SaintSulpice area, and Rue de Grenelle and end up at the Bon Marché department store. What would be the most romantic date in the capital of romance? Take a private cruise on a small boat on the River Seine along with a bottle of champagne, very romantic. What would you recommend for families to discover while visiting the French capital? Your favourite three childrenfriendly spots. The National History Museum with the evolution gallery and Jardin des Plantes. The Atelier des Lumières to initiate children (if needed) to art in a fun way. The Parc des Buttes Chaumont is also a beautiful spot, and includes attractions for children.

Fondation Louis Vuitton

What are your favourite cocktail bars in the city? Café Laurent, the bar at Hotel d’Aubusson with live Jazz every night from Monday to Saturday. Prescription Cocktail Bar on Rue Mazarine. Le Josephine at Hôtel Lutetia. Brunch and high tea are Sunday favourites, where would you suggest to our readers to enjoy the best treats? For brunch, Le Meurice Hotel by Alain Ducasse. For high tea I can recommend the Café Pierre Hermé in Beaupassage or the famous Angelina, in its original tea room on Rue de Rivoli to experience the best hot chocolate.

My Perfect Day 9am: Start the day at the spa in the Hôtel d’Aubusson, a little swim followed by the sauna, hammam, and why not allow yourself a 1 hour massage to top it all off. 12pm: Lunch at KGB (Kitchen Galerie Bis) 3pm: Visit the Cluny Museum 9pm: Dinner at La Truffière
