The Château de Versailles is known around the world for its opulence and its royal heritage. One of the most visited castles on the Ile de France, the Château de Versailles is exceptional in its design and its sprawling grounds, which boasts one of the most impressive and impeccably cared for gardens in the world. Within the Château itself a majestic décor awaits, with several apartments making up the Château that Marie-Antoinette once called home. The Eiffel Tower was originally built as a temporary exhibit for the 1889 World Fair and it is the symbol of the French capital around the world. Standing beneath it and climbing it all the way to the top is one of the most unforgettable moments to experience, especially with your chéri. The iron structure, symbolising the City of Light the world over, is now over 125 years old, and is as grand as ever, sparkling and glittering with lights for five minutes every hour on the hour. Gustave Eiffel created the Iron Lady to stand 300 metres high, and with 1652 steps leading to the top, it is where you can see Paris from high above and shout to the world, “I love you”.

Paris commands a lot of respect when it comes to shopping, from high fashion to high jewellery, the French capital boasts some of the most sought-after brands in the world, and what better way to spend V-Day in the fashion capital than with a little bit of glamorous gift buying. For high jewellery you are invited to Place Vendôme, the famous square where the world’s most famous jewellers are located including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Boucheron. And to celebrate your luxurious purchase why not head to the Ritz, also found on the glittering Place Vendôme, to enjoy a glass of champagne in the Hemingway Bar, a Parisian institution where Ernest Hemingway and Coco Chanel were both regulars. It takes pride as the image of Paris around the world and the Montmartre neighbourhood is just as romantic in real life as it is in the postcard images. The quaint neighbourhood bursts with romance and is an ideal destination to spend a day. Start by going up and down its famous stairs before making your way to the I Love You Wall, a mural paved with tiles declaring I Love You in 300 languages. Montmartre is of course home to the Moulin Rouge, the famous cabaret where the Cancan is danced, and is a perfect date plan to end your romantic day. It has spawned a million proposals and I Love You declarations, and the City of Romance continues its magic this Valentine’s Day with more amour than ever. Create magical memories while visiting some of the city’s most famous sites while declaring to the world “I Love You”. Spend the day at Chantilly and walk through the Château and its stables. The breathtaking château once belonged to Henri d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, with the charming 19th century château taking you back in time to a home of a prince. The château is home to a spectacular collection of antique paintings, making it the second largest collection after the Louvre. After discovering masterpieces by Raphael, including The Madonna of the House of Orléans, and walking through the prince’s bedroom and music room, dine like royalty on sweetbread and wild boar at La Table du Connétable. Made in Troyes
Jenny is Back
The Granata family built its reputation as tailors of premium textiles, working with French luxury fashion houses from its workshop, L’Atelier d’Ariane, in Troyes, and now the family has launched itself into the world of ready-to-wear. Founded by Samuel Granata in Troyes, France’s textile capital, Rue Begand is an unpretentious fashion brand for gentlemen who are looking for no-fuss clothes that are casual enough to be worn out and around the house. Named after one of Troyes’s famous streets, the urban style brand is made in France and is now available in Paris in its recently opened Parisian boutique. - S.I.
Stepping back in time has become more attainable with Jenny Sacerdote. The fashion house that was created in the 20s has just recently been revived and continues the story of Jeanne Adèle Bernard, or Jenny as she was later nicknamed, who was inspired by dance and fashion that flatters. Made in France, the collection features delicate and feminine designs that are easy to move in without compromising elegance. The cuts are delicate and romantic, including this Nuit Camelle dress, inspired by the house’s iconic Premier de l’Elégance dress, which was designed in 1928. - S.I.

Red An intriguing exhibition is underway at the Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner devoted to red and in particular to red hair, characteristic of the paintings of Jean-Jacques Henner who made it his signature. Entitled Red! From Jean-Jacques Henner to Sonia Rykiel, the show offers an eclectic ensemble of paintings, sketches, posters, photographs, drawings, masks and film juxtaposed with the paintings of Henner. Spread out over five sections, the exhibition brings together some 100 works demonstrating the various aspects of red, evoking the imaginings and prejudices surrounding red hair, which fascinates and disturbs at the same time. The show offers works that confront one another including those of Henner, with masks from Papua New Guinea, for example, and creations paying tribute to Sonia Rykiel, the redheaded French fashion designer, underscoring the strength of the colour red. - P.V.

Straight into Star Wars The magic and adventure of the saga of Star Wars is being played out in Paris in an exhibition entitled Les Fans ContreAttaquent (The Fans Strike Back), which puts into the spotlight the largest private collection in Europe of objects and memorabilia related to Star Wars. There are the statues and figurines of everybody’s favourite characters ranging from Yoda to Darth Vader and a gigantic, exceptional, 5-meter long life-sized representation of Jabba. Over 600 objects are on display including original costumes and models of space vessels all unfolding in a brilliantly appointed décor. The unparalleled collection was amassed by Madrid-born Daniel Prada, who conceived the show and who began collecting in 1986 and continues to do so into the present day. Workshops, cosplay competitions, conferences and activities accompany the exhibition, which is being held in a brand new venue in Paris, the Espace Expo Lafayette-Drouot. - P.V. A New Take on Greene The American photographer Milton H. Greene is mainly known for his unique relationship and work in the 1950s with Marilyn Monroe and the ensuing photographs, among them the Black Sitting in New York and the series around the film Bus Stop in Hollywood. Yet, the photographer’s body of work reveals a rich roster of personalities and some of these photographs are currently being showcased by the Galerie de l’Instant. There is the sublime sequence of Marlene Dietrich in 1952, Maria Callas putting on her make-up and a young Romy Schneider in Monte Carlo captured for eternity in 1963. Greene’s realistic approach to his subjects renders them deep, intense and filled with emotion. - P.V. During the daytime, Notre-Dame is packed with tourists and pilgrims but at 7pm on certain nights each week the doors close to the public 90 minutes before a concert of organ or Medieval choir music for a select few. A new travel start-up, Secret Journeys, working with the non-forprofit association Musique Sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris, has developed a unique experience inside the church, for on select concert nights, a limited number of guests can enter the cathedral alone. After a brief talk about the history of the church from a local expert, including on how Victor Hugo’s famous novel was a force in saving it from destruction, and a glass of champagne in the private rooms or gardens of the cathedral, guests visit the cathedral on their own before taking their VIP seats for the evening’s concert. This month visits and concerts will be organised on Tuesday evenings (February 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th) from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, and until 10pm with the concert (optional). You can ask your hotel concierge for booking details or visit secretjourneys.travel. - P.V.

Illustrating Illusions The Palais de la Découverte is presenting a fun-filled and marvellous show devoted to the astonishing world of illusions. Both natural and fabricated illusions are explored in this show, which reveals phenomena that deceive our senses as well as the secrets of magicians. The show demonstrates how the brain is confronted with illusions of all kinds be they visual, audio or tactile. Some of the displays look at the information that the body receives like light, vibrations or deformations while others explore the receptors in the body that capture information like the retina and the senses of touch and hearing. Four mechanisms of cerebral analysis are presented in the show: the brain as an interpreter, the selective brain, the sensitive brain and the expert brain. The show is geared for adults and children from age 7. - P.V.
Artistic Surfaces The soothing and highly visual paintings of the contemporary Russian-born British painter Yuri Kuper are on display at the Galerie Minsky offering a journey into how an artist uses surfaces, techniques and materials. The paintings of Yuri Kuper don’t tell a story although they are figurative yet without being so. “I play with the surface,” says the artist. His paintings serve the most humble or simple of objects, a metal box, paint brushes, a tulip, rendering them beautiful, pulling them out of the shadows and into the light. A pale light for his palette isn’t necessarily pastel but rather light or pale, the space the object is found in is clarified, decanted in a way. The surface, he explains, is a certain number of vibration points. The painting show is punctuated with ceramics by Karen Swami. - P.V. Revealing Rodin Rodin is known widely and throughout the world as a sculptor but his drawings, which he qualified as “key to my work”, today remain relatively unknown, although they were regularly exhibited in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in exhibitions devoted to the artist. The Musée Rodin is presenting some 250 of his drawings, 90 of which are characterised by the cutting and assembling of figures, in an exhibition entitled Rodin, Cut-Outs. From early on in his career, Rodin cut drawings that he pasted into albums and through these cut-outs he created a unique modus operandi. Between 1900 and 1910 he cut out a hundred watercolour nude drawings that form the core of the exhibition. In another series Rodin used his cut-out figures to create combinations that he would mount on a new medium, thus turning them into works of art in their own right. - P.V. Precious Water An educational and awareness-raising exhibition is currently underway devoted to one of our most precious resources: water. The show entitled Aqua, from Top to Bottom, held in the tropical aquarium of the Palais de la Porte Dorée, is an invitation to discover the water cycle. The show takes a look at a host of topics involving water ranging from pollution and ice melt to conflicts linked to water, natural catastrophes, meteorology and the production of drinking water. The show is divided into three sections looking at water from above, water in the exhibition and the water of Paris. The heart of the exhibition is an interactive globe enabling the visitor to discover diverse phenomena related to water around the planet, which are observed and studied from space. The show also takes an intriguing look at the water of Paris offering a glimpse into the city’s reservoirs and water distribution system. - P.V. An Old Favourite Ever since it was opened in 1927 by two restauranteurs from the Auvergne region of central France, Ernest Fraux and René Lafon, La Coupole, a vast brasserie in Montparnasse has been a sassy beacon of Parisian life. During the 1920s, it was a favourite haunt of artists, including Man Ray and Ernest Hemingway, and then after World War II, it enjoyed a long reign as one of le tout Paris (trend-setting Parisians) preferred addresses. After it was acquired by a restaurant chain in the 1980s, the cooking declined and the prices went up, which drove away the Parisian clientele that gave it the lively atmosphere coveted by visitors to the city. Now, happily, new owners have just given the grand Dame a sensitive makeover and tweaked the kitchen to make it not just a good night out, but a fine place to eat again. Start off with a platter of freshly shucked oysters, or maybe some foie gras or dressed crabmeat with lime, and then enjoy a seafood choucroute garnie (sauerkraut with fish) including lobster, sea bass, haddock and salmon or maybe a sole meunière or some of their famous lamb curry. The people watching here is world class, and the service is charming. A great choice for a Sunday night lunch or dinner, since it’s open daily for both meals. – Alexander Lobrano La Coupole 102 blvd du Montparnasse (14th), 01 43 20 14 20

Dinner with a View With spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower across the Seine from its setting in the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, (Museum of French Architecture and Heritage), a 1930s vintage building on the Place du Trocadéro, Girafe is one of the most beautiful new restaurants to open in Paris for a long time. “I wanted to reinvent the Parisian brasserie to offer a modern but relaxed take on luxury,” says owner Gilles Malafosse, who commissioned interior architect Joseph Dirand to create the restaurant’s striking low-lit art-deco décor. Chef Benoît Dargère, a former sous-chef of Alain Passard at Arpège, describes the menu he serves at Girafe as “a song of the sea,” because it features an excellent selection of shellfish and stylish seafood dishes. Highlights of a recent dinner here include sea bream tartare with coconut, lime and passionfruit seeds, grilled octopus with aioli, langoustine ravioli and sea bass cooked in a crust of salt. – A.L. A New Brasserie in Town Ever since Bouillon Pigalle, a 300-seater duplex restaurant with a décor of white subway tiles and Art Moderne suspension lamps, opened a few months ago, it’s been packed to the rafters, with a long line of diners waiting on the pavement outside to get in (they don’t take reservations here, so it’s first come, first serve). What’s drawn Parisians of all ages and also made this place a huge hit with visitors is a remarkably good-value menu of traditional French comfort-food dishes made with good quality ingredients. Start off with escargots, marinated leeks, onion soup or foie gras, and then tuck into a beautifully made blanquette de veau (veal in cream sauce), salmon with sorrel sauce and rice pilaf or cauliflower gratin, among other choices. Finish up with a chocolate éclair, rice pudding or lemon tart, and note that a litre of house wine here runs an amazingly cheap 13.20 euros but is a very pleasant quaff. Get here early to avoid the lines. – A.L. Bouillon Pigalle 22 blvd de Clichy (18th), 01 42 59 69 31
For warm hospitality and excellent Sicilian cooking, it’s worth hopping in a cab and heading to Non Solo Cucina, a charming Italian table in a quiet residential corner of the 16th arrondissement. Since this is a place with a lot of regulars, the cooking is always flawless, and owner Giuseppe Messina prides himself on sourcing the best produce from his native island and elsewhere in Italy. Among the stand-out dishes here are fried anchovies, linguine alle vongole (with clams), pasta with fresh sardines, pine nuts, raisins, wild fennel, garlic and crispy breadcrumbs and veal bocconcini stuffed with lardo di Colonnata, red onion, pecorino, mint, basil and preserved red peppers. The table offers an excellent list of Italian wines and charming service as well. – A.L. Non Solo Cucina 135 rue du Ranelagh (16th), 01 45 27 99 93 58 W HE R E PA R I S I F E B R UA R Y 20 19

Welcoming new chef Gregory Réjou, Le Restaurant’s ambiance remains the same though a new breath of fresh air has been blown into its cuisine, with the young chef bringing his flair to the dishes that include foie gras served with red wine-marinated figs, smoked John Dory accompanied by eggplant caviar, and lobster served with roasted sweetbread. The chef has also created a vegetarian menu that is carefully put together to offer diners a refined dining experience, and includes a pumpkin spelt risotto, and a colourful dish of roasted heirloom vegetables. For an extra treat, make sure you get to your reservation early to enjoy a cocktail at the famous bar before being seated at the restaurant for dinner. – S.I. 3-Star Vegetables He grows his own vegetables and only serves them in his restaurant, and it is for this reason chef Alain Passard is famous amongst Parisian vegetarians, although it isn’t only vegetarians that frequent Passard’s 3-star restaurant, Arpège. Nestled in a quiet street in the very chic 7th arrondissement, Arpège is popular for both business lunches and more intimate dinners with elegant place settings and a general tranquillity to the establishment with only the occasional swish from the staff floating in the room creating a serene atmosphere. The menu here bursts with odes to vegetables with dishes such as lightly salted beetroot served with a light quince mousseline, smoked potatoes with shavings of truffle and an onion tart with aged ParmigianoReggiano cheese showing off the chef’s talent in refining what the good earth has given him. – S.I. CHIQUETTE, T H E N E W R E S TA U R A N T OF LE CINQ CODET!
On November 26th, the restaurant of the five-star property, Le Cinq Codet, reopened its doors to Chiquette, a cosy place to experience on the Left Bank. A new kitchen, new chef and new name, the restaurant reinvents itself and offers, from now on, a cosmopolitan and acidulated touch. After beginning in the United States, at the Four Seasons Palm Beach, Chef David Maroleau continued his career in the French kitchen of the Plaza Athénée and in the English kitchen of the Green House and the Ritz in London. Back in Paris, he integrated Michel Troisgros’ team at the Lancaster and was approached by The Majesctic Hotel Group to become Chef of the Hotel Montalembert .

On Ice To celebrate 75 fabulous years of showstopping skating shows, Holiday on Ice is bringing their new show, Showtime, to the City of Light. The 2-hour show sees the incredible figure skaters skate their way through love, drama and ambition, retelling the story of an artist and his quest to produce a show, on ice. The show will be skating through Paris from the 28th of February to the 5th of March and promises to be a great show for the whole family. - S.I. Dôme de Paris 34 blvd Victor (15th), 01 53 33 45 35

Whistling Away While many of us might whistle when we are happy or simply doing something around the house, Fred Radix, aka Le Siffleur (The Whistler) has turned whistling into a form of art. The artist will be taking to the stage on the 13th of February to perform his 500th show where he will impressively whistle famous songs that range from the light Heigh-Ho from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the more sophisticated Habanera from Carmen. A natural comedian, Radix engages the audience with his humour between numbers and although the jokes are in French his amazing and unique talent of whistling will have you blown away that even if you are lost in translation it will not matter as the real show is Le Siffleur whistling. The highlight of his shows is always the medley at the end where he whistles pieces by Mozart, Chopin and even includes Richard Wagner’s Bridal Chorus, and we dare you to leave the show without whistling your way out. - S.I. ADVERTORIAL
“Learning to be French through Comedy” As tourists or expats in Paris there are some quirks we have all noticed among the Parisians, the way they march to their destinations, their constant pouting and the way they order at restaurants. Olivier Giraud has too, noticed that the Parisians are unique in their behaviour, and has decided to bring all those idiosyncrasies to light. Born in Bordeaux, Olivier moved to Paris to study hotel management and after graduating he moved to the Unites States where he managed a restaurant of a 5-star hotel. After four years, and many soul-searching nights, he decided to return to France and follow his real dream of becoming a
comedian. Having experienced the cultural differences between the Parisians and Americans while in Florida, and having observed for himself the tourists of all nationalities in Paris, he decided to not shy away from the hardhitting questions of how one becomes a real Parisian. How do you grab a waiter’s attention in a café? In the metro, what do you do if you see an older lady or a pregnant woman? And how do you behave in a cab? Putting together a one man show, How to become a Parisian in one hour?, the stand-up comic will leave you rolling in your seat from
laughter and 100% prepared for any situation in the City of Light. The ultimate Parisian theatre experience created by Olivier Giraud! Enjoyed by more than 500 000 spectators, this show is much more than a stand-up comedy! It’s a hilarious, incisive and visual observation of the Parisian behaviour! Performed 100% in English all year round in one of the most beautiful Italian Renaissance style theatres (600 seats) located in the lively heart of Paris... Ohlala! Non-stop laughter from a real Parisian guaranteed to leave you wanting more. This is THE PERFECT GUIDE to enjoy Paris and the Parisians!

Fashion is Just a Show If you have not seen the Fashion Freak Show cabaret yet make sure you run to grab your tickets before it ends its run. Created by fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, this show is a unique revue celebrating life and fashion that is presented with a fabulous mix of a sexy cabaret and a theatrical fashion show, something the French designer is very famous for doing. Knowing how to put on a show is second nature to Gaultier and the result in putting a cabaret together is just brilliant with plenty of fun and sass. Loosely based on the designer’s life, Fashion Freak Show takes you from Paris to London and back again all while a soundtrack from the 70s and 80s is playing in the background. You can book your seats at Fnac. - S.I. Folies Bergère 32 rue Richer (9th)

Disappointed party-goers who were told of the closure of Le Baron can now get their party shoes on and head to the recently opened Medellin. Taking over the old club’s space, this new hot bar and private club is proving to be one of the city’s best after dark spots. Open daily from 7pm to 5am, Medellin is a perfect rendezvous for cocktail hour or to celebrate into the wee hours of the night the idea of being in the City of Light. The new Parisian address is decked in Colombian décor and serves tacos, including a very chic caviar version, offers more than 50 varieties of tequila, and serves, possibly, the city’s most expensive Mojito. What are your top 3 most romantic restaurants? At a table near the fireplace at Le CoupeChou, in the glow of a chandelier at Pétrelle or in a private room at Lapérouse.
Crazy Horse
In the glow of a lamppost, a kiss in the Parc de la Turlure. A beautiful spring afternoon, embraced bodies at the top of the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont.
Is there somewhere in the city that surprised you in how romantic it is/or could be? The view behind Notre-Dame from the Quai de Tournelle reminds me how much I am in love with Paris.
Which boutique would you recommend if one of your guests were looking to purchase a special gift? The most beautiful lingerie articles and nightwear are in the La Perla boutique on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré to spice up your long winter nights.
Where is the most romantic place to kiss in Paris? This happiness is to be found at the end of the Square Barye where five benches are embedded for eternity at the tip of the Ile Saint-Louis.
Which bar would you recommend for a romantic nightcap? I recommend Secret 8, Buddha Bar’s speakeasy bar, you need to find the password to get in, just like with the heart of your lover.
From where would you recommend a couple take a romantic walk in Paris? On a summer evening, hand in hand along the banks of the Seine. On an autumn afternoon, arm in arm in the Parc Monceau.
In which film is the romanticism of Paris best described? Midnight in Paris. This film is a postcard or even a magnificent love letter to our capital city.
