Into the Universe of Victor Vasarely with Alom

ART for All By Patrica Valicenti

T

here is never a shortage of cultural offerings in Paris and this month’s offerings are particularly rich and diverse with, for instance, a veritable parade of the world’s most prestigious painters in a host of shows ranging from the Courtauld Collection of 19th and 20th century French paintings, a dialogue between the works of Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh in digital and drawings by the masters from the Pushkin Museum. The divine, decorative works of the Nabis are also the object of a major exhibition and there is a retrospective devoted to the father of Op Art, Victor Vasarely. And on a different register and not to be missed is a comprehensive show telling the story of skin, our skin. At the Fondation Louis Vuitton one of the most emblematic private art collections is on view through to June 17th, offering an opportunity to see the great French paintings of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition, entitled the Courtauld Collection, brings together for the first time in 60 years in Paris some 110

works amassed by the English industrialist and patron of the arts Samuel Courtauld. The works on show include paintings and drawings all of which belonged to Samuel Courtauld and for the most part are conserved in the Courtauld Gallery in London. The path of the exhibition traces the development of Impressionism through to Post-Impressionism from the 1860s to the turn of the 20th century. Various sections of the show are devoted to major painters including Cézanne, Gauguin, Manet, Seurat, Renoir and Van Gogh. The show offers the opportunity to see a host of masterpieces including Nevermore by Gauguin, Renoir’s La Loge (The Theatre Box), and Van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear. The Musée National Picasso - Paris is hosting a show devoted to two of the most seminal figures in 20th century art, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso. While the crossover connections between the two artists are endless, both artists clearly explored the void, the absence of space, using it in the full range of their works from the figurative to the abstract. It is this theme that the exhibition, entitled Calder-Picasso, explores through some w w w. p a r i s m a p. fr 13

Art Shows

The Nabis are taking centre stage at the Musée du Luxembourg in the Luxembourg Gardens marking the first time in France that a show has been devoted to the decorative arts of these Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists. The decorative arts were at the core of this movement whose artists sought to break down the border between the fine arts and the applied arts. It drew its inspiration from the ideas of William Morris who along with John Ruskin initiated the Arts and Crafts movement in England in the 1860s, which would spread to the continent. The ornamental occupied an important position in their creations and they would paint not only canvases but fans, screens, etchings, tapestries, wallpaper and stained glass. The Nabis would develop an art of simplified shapes, supple, marked by their lively colours and destined to brighten up contemporary interiors. They were pioneers of modern décor, Bonnard, Vuillard and Maurice Denis among them, who would defend a lively, joyful and original mode of expression. The show, entitled The Nabis and Décor and which opens on March 13th and is running through to June 30th, reconstitutes decorative ensembles that had been dispersed over time. Meanwhile, The Fondation Custodia is presenting an exceptional exhibition of the drawing masterpieces of the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. This first exhibition of the graphic arts of the Pushkin Museum in France revolves around the European and Russian schools of drawing from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The incredible wealth of this selection unfolds through more than 200 works on display by, among others, Dürer, Veronese, Rubens, Fragonard, Tiepolo, Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Van Gogh and Chagall. The show plunges the visitor into the history of drawing ranging from German works from the end of the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance and a journey into the 17th century with exceptional works by Poussin, Rembrandt and Rubens all the way through to the 20th century. The show, entitled The Pushkin Museum, Five Hundred Years of Drawings by the Masters is running through to May 12th.

One of the landmark exhibitions this season is the first retrospective in France dedicated to Victor Vasarely, regarded as the father of optic art, and which is being presented by the Centre Pompidou. Some 300 works, objects and documents have been brought together exploring the world of Vasarely, his prolific creation and showcasing every aspect of his work from the paintings to the sculptures, the multiples, architectural integrations to advertisements and the early studies. The show entitled Vasarely: Sharing Forms, follows a chronological and thematic path through the major periods of his career from his early training in his native Hungary in the 1920s, before settling in Paris in 1930,

120 works from the two artists that show how they, each in their own way, dealt with the question of the void from a wider perspective. The show is running through to August 25th and includes iconic works including Seven Black, Red and Blue and Josephine Baker IV from Calder and The Bull’s Head and the Femme dans un Fauteuil by Picasso.

to the development of abstract and optical art through to his final experiments inspired by science fiction. The show, which is running through to May 6th, also takes a look at the influence his art had on popular culture. A colourful foray into the world of the digital arts is on hand at the Atelier des Lumières, the first centre for digital arts in Paris, which proposes monumental digital exhibitions plunging the visitor into the pictorial universe of major artists. Currently on the agenda is a show devoted to Vincent Van Gogh entitled Van Gogh, the Starry Night, running all year through to December 31st. The exhibition takes a digital look at the creativity of this major artist through his sunny landscapes, scenes of the night, portraits, the still lives and the masterpieces all highlighting the chromatic wealth and diversity of his paintings. The sound and light exhibition traces the intense and at times tormented life of this artist who during the last 10 years of his life would create more than 2000 paintings. And one of the most intriguing shows in town is devoted to the largest organ in the human body, the skin, which is the object of an exhibition entitled In My Skin at the Musée de l’Homme, the anthropological museum located in the Palais de Chaillot. The visitor enters the exhibition through a tunnel whose walls reproduce multiphoton images, a technique using a powerful laser microscopy that reveals the morphology of the various cells that make up the skin in their real-life proportions, the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin), the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. The show goes on to explore the complex structure of the skin, its role as the organ of touch, an explanation of the skin’s colour including an interactive display, which enables the visitor to determine precisely the colour of his or her skin. The exhibition traces the functions of the skin, for example as a protective barrier to the elements, as well as exploring the signs of ageing, the micro-organisms that compose the skin and a section on how to heal it, from major burns, for example. The exhibition, which was conceived and produced by the French beauty company L’Oréal and the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle - Musée de l’Homme opens on March 13th and runs through to June 3rd.

Interview

LAURA’S Jewellery Box By Sandra Iskander

S

he launched her first collection in 2017, and now two years later, jewellery designer Laura Sayan is slowly tackling the world of fine jewellery one gem at a time. We met with the designer to try to find out about her inspirations, her goals, and most importantly how we should be accessorising.

How do you manage your time between your personal and professional life? I’m lucky enough to be able to work at my own rhythm and move things around according to my time. It is a great freedom. Creativity doesn’t have set hours!

How would you describe your style when it comes to designing jewellery? My inspirations come from my origins, from symbols that mean something to me, the mixture of old and tradition to make something that is timeless.

How do you spend your free time? Yoga, horse riding, reading, spending time with my children, my friends, and travelling.

How did you come up with your first design? My very first piece was the dreamcatcher, a strong piece with what it symbolises, I was instantly inspired. While it was never regarded as a precious talisman, in my eyes it is one of the most precious talismans, destroying nightmares to let the dreams filter through. How did you start working in jewellery design? I had always wanted to launch my own brand but I just didn’t then one day I just took a piece of paper and I started sketching, once that first step was taken everything else followed. Do you instantly notice how people accessorise when you meet them or when you walk down the street? Yes of course, I am always observing because I find that it helps me with my collections and understand what people wear. How critical are you of what people are wearing? I don’t think I am very critical of what people wear, everyone has a style and everyone evolves in their style. I can find that certain things do not appeal to me or do not suit me but I do not criticise. 16 W HER E PA R I S I M A R C H 2019

Which city offers you the most inspiration and why? New York. That city moves me with its energy, its diversity. Everything seems possible there. If any city in the world can be your jewellery box, which city would it be and why? It would still be New York. It is a city that is strong in energy and is unique. If you could wake up tomorrow in any part of the world, where would it be? Saint-Barthelemy, that island is magic! What are you favourite places in Paris? Place Vendôme. It is like time has stood still there. Where do you love to shop in Paris? When I am in Paris I always have to stop by Montaigne Market and Mad Lords. What is the one item you never travel without? Unfortunately there are a lot! But I would have to say my diary that also doubles as a notebook as I always need to have something to write or sketch my ideas in that just pop into my head.

What is the first thing you do when you arrive at your new destination? I unpack and organise my stuff. What are your suitcase packing tips? The essentials, my beauty necessities, a pair of ankle boots and heels, a t-shirt, black leggings, a clutch bag, a timeless dress, a jacket and a pair of shorts. They’re my basics that are always with me. What should every woman and man have in his or her jewellery box? A bracelet. If there is one piece of jewellery to have what would it be? A ring with a beautiful stone. Which piece of jewellery are you always wearing? I always wear earrings and bracelets. What other brands do you wear besides your own? I am always wearing pieces by Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels that have sentimental meaning to me. They are timeless with strong symbolic meaning. Jewellery tends to be very intimate, with each piece holding a memory. Do you feel the

same way about every piece you design? Totally. For me jewellery needs to be filled with symbolism, jewellery needs to represent in each person’s eyes something strong. Every piece of jewellery I have designed has been the result of that. Which designers do you admire and influence you? There are a lot but in regards to fashion I would have to say Karl Lagerfeld is an icon. I also equally admire Tom Ford.

Is it easier or more difficult to collaborate with other designers? Neither easy nor difficult, it is all a matter of how you work with someone. Available at Mad Lords 320 rue Saint-Honoré (1st) 01 45 25 08 51

Which fashion brand, if any, embodies in clothes the Laura Sayan jewellery style? Dolce & Gabbana mix classic with modern yet still remain original, pieces that remain and which dress you up and make you stand out. If you were not designing what would you be doing? If I were not designing I would have loved to be a surgeon to cure and save people. What’s next for you as a designer? To continually create. To give life to new designs. Would you ever consider designing other accessories such as bags or even perhaps clothes? Yes I am actually going to launch a line of t-shirts with a friend of mine. w w w.p a r i s m a p. fr 17

It has been ten years since Altuzarra entered the coveted fashion world and to mark this huge milestone, the American fashion house has just launched a capsule collection named The One That Got Away. The anniversary collection is inspired by pieces from the house’s archives chosen by 10 women who over the years have become friends and muses of Joseph Altuzarra. The women who include Evan Rachel Wood, Carine Roitfeld and Caroline Issa all embody the brand for Joseph and were given the rare opportunity to choose pieces from the archives that they would want to wear now, and so the capsule collection was born complete with a gingham dress, boot cut pants and floor-length dress. - S.I. No Guess Work To add a dash of colour to the new season, Guess has collaborated with Colombian singer J Balvin to bring us quite the sunny collection. The Guess x J Balvin collection bursts with orange, red and plenty of sunshine with shorts, sweaters and even socks rocking the colourful hues of the singer’s native Colombia. - S.I. Meeting the New Moon This year the house of Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced its new Master Ultra Thin Moon Enamel in a limited edition of 100 pieces, which embodies a pure and refined watchmaking style with a hand-guilloche blue enamel dial, new hour markers, a new polished and shining moon and a new engraved counter. One of the dress watch’s most astonishing features is its ultra thin case of 10.04mm in white gold, which conceals its engine, the JaegerLeCoultre 925, an automatic mechanical movement with a 70hour power reserve. However, what really catches the eye is the guilloche enamel dial in deep blue for the model embraces blue, a deep, intense midnight blue. The watchmaker has preserved for generations age-old skills like guillochage, engraving, gem setting and enamelling in-house through its Rare Handcrafts department and so the watch’s art and craft details have been meticulously crafted by hand at the manufacture. The timepiece also features a new, highly detailed moon phase setting and when the moon is full its perfectly round and polished white disk rests on a stellar background. - P.V. anssens, the specialist in bespoke women’s trousers opened her boutique at 93 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the 8th arrondissement. Philippine studied at the Académie Internationale de la Coupe in Paris. She is also the granddaughter of a couturière in the French fashion world, and her mother founded the haute couture fabric

Maison Janssens & Janssens. This all comes together in her work to create the ideal trouser with perfect cuts and ultra-fine measurements, along with a wide selection of fabrics, stylistic details and custom options make for a unique pantalon with an impeccable fit. The end result? Custom designed, and Made in France, trousers with a design that will complement every silhouette. Timeless models as well as more audacious designs

are all possible by just letting yourself be guided by your desires and by Philippine Janssens’s imagination. In Spring 2019, Philippine is launching the “10 Spring/Summer Must-Haves” for every woman’s wardrobe as well as a capsule collection of wedding trousers. Now, Philippine Janssens’s permanent corner at the Bon Marché Rive Gauche makes it possible to design made-tomeasure trousers in one week!

Outward Bound The Halle Saint Pierre is presenting an exhibition devoted to outsider art from Japan in a show entitled Art Brut Japonais II. The exhibition showcases the work of some 50 artists who have invented their own mythology to depict and their own figurative language. Working in studio groups or individually these artists who are often isolated or challenged on a social level use all kinds of techniques and all kinds of materials breaking with traditional approaches to art. The works on display embody a wide range of themes like traditional Japanese houses and landscapes, urban scenes, characters from advertisements or mangas or unusual takes on everyday objects or fauna. There is a whimsical representation of a leopard, a cheetah and a baby leopard on wood, a frantic clown-like or court fool face, present as well are several representations of the circle, defined in Japan as the symbol of perfection. - P.V. Showing through to March 10th 2 rue Ronsard (18th), 01 42 58 72 89

Dignified Drawings For nearly three decades, collectors, curators of major museums and art lovers have converged on Paris for the internationallyrenowned Salon du Dessin, the drawing show, a place to discover and purchase unknown masterpieces and works by the masters as well as emerging artists. The show, being held for the 28th time and bringing together some 39 exhibitors, is regarded as the most important event in the world for viewing and acquiring old works, too. The Salon is hosting two museumquality exhibitions, one, entitled Festivities in Paris, showcases drawings from the Musée Carnavalet-Histoire de Paris while the house of Chaumet will exhibit drawings of its jewellery in a show on a theme of nature. Museums and foundations from Paris to Chantilly get into the drawing spirit, exhibiting some of their rarely shown works, for drawings are fragile and often conserved away from the public eye. For a selection of venues visit www.salondudessin.com. - P.V. Focus on Foujita There are the portraits, the portraits of the beautiful women of his times, the scenes in Paris and its cafés, the wrestlers in China and of course the cats. The Maison de la Culture du Japon is presenting an exhibition devoted to the great artist Foujita who lived and worked in Paris and would eventually become a French citizen. The retrospective show, entitled Foujita, Works of a Life, presents some 40 of his works retracing the ensemble of his career from 1913 to 1968. While his Parisian period is the best known to the French public, most of the works on exhibit come from Japan and are being shown in France for the first time. The show takes a look at how the work of Foujita is constantly renewed and impregnated with Western art and all the while retains his Japanese culture. - P.V. A journey into the exotic land of the former Sikh Empire in the Punjab is unfolding at the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques- Guimet in a show entitled Fables of the Orient, Miniaturists, Artists and Adventurers at the Court of Lahore. The colourful exhibition presents an ensemble of little known illustrations revealing a surprising aspect of Indian pictorial art by Imam Bakhsh of Lahore who officiated at the court of the Sikh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the first half of the 19th century. Ranjit Singh conquered Lahore, today in modern-day Pakistan, made it his capital and reigned over a Sikh empire that extended throughout the Punjab. The two series of illustrations by Imam Bakhsh on display emanate from two books, The Memoirs of General Court and more surprisingly the Fables of Jean de la Fontaine for which the artist created profoundly unique visuals to illustrate this classic of French literature. - P.V. A Place in Time The Centquatre-Paris cultural venue is hosting an intriguing installation exhibition entitled If Time Were a Place, showcasing a group of sound and light installation sculptures by the Spanish-born artist Pablo Valbuena. Both minimalist and spectacular, the sculptures of Valbuena offer a singular architectural experience in which the virtual and the real overlap. The immersive and ephemeral works are conceived by the artist for the spaces that welcome them and for each work the artist models the sound, light and movement using lines, points and geometrical shapes. This marks the first solo show in France dedicated to Valbuena. - P.V Showing through to March 24th 5 rue Curial (19th), 01 53 35 50 00 48 W HE R E PA R I S I M A R C H 2019

Made to Measure An intriguing show is being played out at the Musée des Arts et Métiers, a museum which is devoted to arts related to professions, particularly scientific ones, showcasing an array of objects used to measure, well just about anything. There is a hat maker’s conformateur to measure the shape and the size of the head, a graphometer, a surveying instrument used to measure angles, and a machine to predict the tides known as the Tide Predictor no. 3 and conceived by Lord Kelvin. These are just some of the myriad objects on display in the show entitled Made to Measure, the 7 Units of the World. The exhibition coincides with the re-definition of four of the seven base units in the International System of Units, the kilogram, the ampere, the kelvin and the mole, which took place last November at the General Conference on Weights and Measures in Versailles and is slated to go into effect in May of 2019. - P.V. Kertész Revisited The pharmaceutical laboratory Debat, founded by Dr François Debat, an emblematic figure of the upscale Parisian suburb of Saint-Cloud, published between 1929 and 1939 a magazine entitled Art et Médecine (Art and Medicine) a high quality, luxurious monthly that was delivered to health professionals. In its pages one finds articles by Jean Cocteau and François Mauriac and photographs, by among others, the great Hungarian-born American photographer André Kertész. An intriguing photograph of the Eiffel Tower taken from the petite ceinture railroad tracks, and a baby being weighed are among the 80 black and white prints by Kertész that are being exhibited in a show at the Musée des Avelines in Saint-Cloud, organised in partnership with the Médiathèque de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine. Kertész would contribute 292 photographs published in over 25 issues of the magazine depicting scenes of working class Paris and regions in the heart of France in the 1930s. - P.V. The Legacy of a Legend

Façade sud-ouest, entrée du château de Pierrefonds Photo © Colombe Clier - CMN; The Musée Napoleon I in the Château de Fontainebleau Photos © Château de Fontainebleau

The castle of Pierrefonds is hosting an exhibition devoted to Arthur and the legendary round table entitled King Arthur. A Legend in Images. The show, presented by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (France’s National Monument Centre) and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (France’s National Library) brings the legend alive through projections of illuminated manuscripts emanating from the prestigious collection of the National Library, which possesses the world’s leading collection of manuscripts devoted to King Arthur. The show presents the major Arthurian themes and the key characters in the Arthurian universe in the form of the projections of the illuminated medieval manuscripts. The show also takes a look at how the legend has been re-discovered and re-invented from the 19th century onwards in literature, comic books and cinema. - P.V. Experiencing the Empire The Musée Napoleon I in the Château de Fontainebleau, which was recently re-configured, offers an instructive journey into the world of the First French Empire, Napoleon Bonaparte and his family. The exceptional collections take a look at the life and times of the emperor and remain both decorative and historical while revealing the majestic role played by the arts during the First French Empire. Located in the Louis XV wing of the castle, the museum presents a rich array of furnishings, objets d’art, sculptures, pieces worked in gold and silver, arms, costumes, ceramics, documents and historical souvenirs that belonged to the Imperial family. The collections have been enriched over the past few years and include a miniature in ivory depicting the Roi de Rome by Isabey and luxurious pieces of porcelain from the First Empire and listed as National Treasure. - P.V. A Little Bit of Brooklyn in Paris “New York City was a fantastic experience,” says talented Marseille-born chef Frédéric Duca, who has just opened a delightful bistro on the northern edge of the 17th arrondissement in Paris after four years of cooking at the Manhattan branch of Racines, the trendy Paris bistro. “I loved the free-style approach to modern cooking in New York, where chefs draw inspiration from the whole world, and this is what I wanted to bring back to Paris,” says Duca, who laid the handsome cream-colored Moroccan tile herringbone pattern floor at his restaurant himself. From the ground up, Rooster has a sort of Brooklyn chic vibe, with an antique pharmacy cabinet displaying handmade ceramics from Aix-en-Provence and Brooklyn. The short menu features three or four suggestions for entrées, mains and desserts, which showcase Duca’s love of fresh produce and earthy flavours. At a recent dinner, we loved the open tart topped with red mullet on sautéed onions, agnolotti filled with Parmesan cream and garnished with Lardo di Colonnata (fatback), and yellow pollack with pumpkin, macadamia and spinach rissoles. Don’t miss the bay leaf flavoured panna cotta either. – Alexander Lobrano Rooster 137 rue Cardinet (17th), 01 45 79 91 48

A Taste of Romania The Sentier district, formerly Paris’s garment industry neighbourhood, has become one of the liveliest young neighbourhoods in the city, with many interesting and offbeat new restaurants, including the delightful Ibrik Kitchen. This friendly table looks like an art-gallery, with white walls, parquet floors, and spot lighting, and it features a delicious “neo-nostalgic” selection of dishes from one of Europe’s least known kitchens, or the wonderful cooking of Romania. Highlights of a recent dinner included pastramă, the roasted brined beef known as pastrami in most English speakingcountries, which came to table here covered with Transylvanian truffle shavings in a smoked-filled bell jar, sarmale (fermented cabbage rolls with meat filling) and a side of mămăligă cu smăntănă, a cornmeal porridge like polenta with lashings of sour cream, and a delicious pistachio cake for dessert. – A.L. Paris’s New Tapas Rendez-vous To room service or to go out, sometimes that is the question facing visitors to Paris. On the one hand, sometimes you don’t want a long elaborate meal or you’re on your own, so it’s tempting to stay in and have the inevitable club sandwich or Caesar salad. But then there’s a nagging feeling this would be sort of a shame in a city with the world’s most exalted gastronomic reputation. Well, Boca, a vest-pocket restaurant in the heart of the city about a ten-minute walk from the Opera and the big department stores could be the ideal solution to your quandary. Stopping by for dinner the other night, the owner was charming, and we loved the gravlax with jellied cubes of lemon and gin, aubergine beignets, grilled razor-shell clams with bacon, and pork ribs with scallions and a Creole sauce. – A.L. Pastry chef and baker Benoît Castel invites you to his address in the 20th arrondissement of the French capital for hearty brunches every Saturday and Sunday. The all-you-can-eat brunch is a colourful buffet with salads, eggs, breakfast pastries and of course the famous baker’s bread, from organic varieties to multigrain options. The buffet also has a sweet corner with cakes and French pastries on offer to enjoy with a coffee at the end of the weekend brunch. Brunch is served from 10.30am to 2pm. No reservations are possible so get in there early. – S.I. Benoît Castel 150 rue de Ménilmontant (20th), 01 46 36 13 82 60 W HE R E PA R I S I M A R C H 2019

A Contemporary Bistro Not far from the famous Folies Bergère music hall in the heart of Paris, is where you will find L’Office, a charming contemporary bistro that is a perfect place for a quiet tête-à-tête over a meal of wonderfully inventive contemporary cooking by young chef Charley Breuvart, who trained at the prestigious Ecole Ferrandi cooking school. Settle into the stylish dining room with a white-tiled bar, almond green and toast painted walls, oak plank floors and 50s retro light fixtures and tuck into succulent dishes like haddock with potato waffles and horseradish spiked whipped cream and scallops on a bed of coriander-seasoned tapioca with garnishes of nashi, fennel and pickled lemon, a fascinating and very successful composition of flavours and textures. Buckwheat flour brioche with coffee and whisky flavoured cream concludes a very fine meal. – A.L.

Dining with a View With the hope of spring just around the corner there is only one thing to do, embrace the outdoors. And one of our favourite tables in the French capital welcomes you with a great outdoor dining area, a fantastic view and delicious fare. Loulou, nestled between Musée du Louvre and the Tuileries Garden, is a very popular address for Parisians and tourists that offers diners a Mediterranean menu that caters to all moods, with light and more generous and hearty dishes on the menu. Order the artichoke salad served with shavings of Parmesan cheese or try the linguine generously tossed in a pistachio pesto sauce. For dessert don’t skip the tiramisu for two. – S.I. A Night in Bali The warm elegant atmosphere at Djakarta Bali, a charming Indonesian restaurant in the centre of Paris, is explained by the fact that the Hanafi family have been welcoming guests here ever since 1985. There’s a fascinating backstory here, too, the senior Mr Hanafi had been the Indonesian ambassador to Cuba and a government minister, but chose to stay abroad after a regime change in Indonesia. “We receive guests at our restaurant like we would receive them in our home,” says Nina Hanafi, his gracious daughter, who founded the restaurant, where the dining room is dominated by a golden Buddha, silk banner and slate walls. Unless you’re a knowledgeable fan of Indonesian cooking, the best way to meet the varied kitchen of this island nation in southeast Asia is with the excellent value 35-euro Bandung Menu Rijsttafel (the word rijsttafel means rice table in Dutch, and is how the Dutch refer to this sort of tasting menu in a country that was their colony for three centuries). You start with the soothing Soto Ayam, a rich chicken soup with rice and vegetables, and continue with lumpia, deep-fried spring rolls, chicken satay (peanut sauce), and umami rich rending daging, beef marinated in coconut milk with Indonesian herbs. By turns delicate and fully flavoured, Indonesian cooking is soothing, sophisticated and sensual, and this is a wonderful place to discover it. – A.L. It only opened a few months ago just in time for all the Christmas festivities and now Le Bonheur has become one of our favourite chocolate shops to pop into for a yummy treat. Chocolatier Laurent Moreno has captured everyone’s love for praline chocolate and turned it around to bring a new je ne sais quoi to the often hazelnut and almond flavoured heart of pralines. Here in the quaint shop you will find floor to ceiling individually wrapped praline chocolates with surprising flavours including pistachio and basil, goji berries, and puffed rice and ginger. You can buy one of the colourful angels wrapped chocolates or opt to fill a chocolate box with your favourite flavours. – S.I. “Learning to be French through Comedy”

A

s tourists or expats in Paris there are some quirks we have all noticed among the Parisians, the way they march to their destinations, their constant pouting and the way they order at restaurants. Olivier Giraud has too, noticed that the Parisians are unique in their behaviour, and has decided to bring all those idiosyncrasies to light. After graduating from a top culinary school

in Paris, Olivier moved to the United States where he managed a restaurant of a 5-star hotel. After four years, and many soul-searching nights, he decided to return to France and follow his real dream of becoming a comedian. Having experienced the cultural differences between the Parisians and Americans while in Florida and having observed for himself the tourists of all nationalities in Paris, he decided to not shy away from the hard-hitting questions of how one becomes a real Parisian. How do you grab a waiter’s attention in a café? In the metro, what do you do if you see an older lady or a pregnant woman? And how do you behave in a cab? Putting together a one man show, How to become a Parisian in one hour?, the stand-up comic will leave you rolling in your seat from laughter and 100% prepared for any situation in the City of Light. This is the perfect guide to enjoy Paris and the Parisians! Enjoyed by more than 500 000 spectators, this show 100% in English is much more than a stand-up comedy... It’s a hilarious, incisive and visual observation of the Parisian behaviour! Non-stop laughter from a real Parisian guaranteed to leave you wanting more.

Like every year the hotel’s terrace transforms into a winter wonderland and this year it is courtesy of Chivas Regal that the bar takes you on a voyage to the Alps without having to leave the French capital. The head barman, Judicaël Noël, has created four exclusive cocktails in celebration of this ephemeral partnership, all based of course using the collection of Chivas Regal whiskeys including one cocktail based around the Chivas XV, a new addition to the Chivas family, a blended whiskey aged for 15 years and selectively finished in Grande Champagne Cognac casks. A Private Affair David Lynch’s body of work is notorious for being eclectic and dark and his Parisian club, Silencio, is no exception. The club, which opened its doors in 2011, is inspired in décor by the club of the same name that was featured in Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, and is a members club that gives a dark and juxtaposing nod to 17th-century Parisian literary circles and Studio 54 in New York. The club boasts a library, two bars and a stage, which welcomes a revolving door of artists, from photographers to DJs. While Silencio is reserved for members only from 6pm for its cultural events, it is open to the public from Tuesday to Thursday, from 11pm to 4am and until 6am on Fridays and Saturdays for a very elite night of clubbing in the City of Light. - S.I. Paris Metro ◗ Paris is crossed by 14 Métro lines and five RER (express suburban) lines, all numbered and named for their final destination (terminus). Did you know that there are 300 stations that make up Paris’ metro system?

80 W HE R E PA R I S I M A R C H 2019

◗ Each Métro trip requires one ticket regardless of how many transfers you make, though you must buy an extra ticket for the RER outside the city limits. Keep your ticket until you exit.

◗ Tickets are sold in all stations and in cafés (tabacs) with a ticket sign outside, single (1.90€/2€ if purchased on a bus) or by 10 (un carnet - 14.50€). This map includes the new tramway line.

◗ “Paris Visite” passes offer unlimited travel on the Métro and buses (1day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day). The Métro and RER start running at 5:30am, and stop around 1 am.

◗ While the Métro is an extremely safe way to travel, watch out for pickpockets in crowded trains and stations. For information in English, call the transportation company (RATP) directly at 08.92.68.41.14.

My Paris

CHRISTOPHER EL OUADAKRI

HEAD CONCIERGE AT NOLINSKI PARIS

Le Pré Catelan

Paris is known around the world as the City of Light, what would you recommend visitors do in the evening to really take in its beauty? A walking tour by night in the heart of Paris, starting from Pont Neuf down Ile de la Cité to discover different places such as Square Vert Galant, Place Dauphine, La Conciergerie, Sainte-Chapelle and Notre-Dame. Ending by a gastronomic dinner at La Tour d’Argent, one of the oldest restaurants in town, which offers a breathtaking view over the River Seine and the Notre-Dame cathedral. As a culinary capital what are three of your favourite restaurants that you would recommend our readers to try? Restaurant du Palais Royal, a one Michelin star restaurant. A real gem inside one of the most charming gardens in Paris. Chef Philip Chronopoulos offers refined seasonal dishes in a luxurious and contemporary location. My second choice will be Brach located near Trocadéro, this place is entirely designed by Philippe Starck, [and] the atmosphere is incredible. In the kitchen, the very talented chef Adam Bentalha proposes a very tasty and healthy Mediterranean cuisine. My third choice will be Chez Monsieur located a few steps away from the Madeleine church, this bistro serves fresh produce prepared in a traditional way like their amazing veal stew or the famous snails of Burgundy. 82 W HE R E PA R I S I M A R C H 2019

Cruise along the Seine

What are the top three monuments not to be missed while in Paris? Château de Versailles, a magnificent monument full of history, the best heritage site. Arc de Triomphe, a monument with beauty and character. Musée de l’Orangerie, this museum highlights the richness of the Impressionist movement. If our readers wanted to spend their day shopping, would you recommend they do so on the Left Bank or the Right Bank? Right Bank, from the most famous brands located on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and Avenue Montaigne to the very fashionable small designer shops located in the Le Marais area. What would be the most romantic date in the capital of romance? A private cruise down the River Seine by night. You can discover the most beautiful monuments of Paris from a very exclusive angle, enjoying a glass of champagne in front of the Eiffel Tower aboard a Venetian boat is very unique. What would you recommend for families to discover while visiting the French Capital? Jardin du Luxembourg on the Left Bank. This garden is dedicated to Parisians with friends and family, you will find a playground with fun swings and a carousel. On the lake, small boats can be hired so children can float them across

the water. There is also a children’s theatre where kids could watch a puppet show. What are your favourite cocktail bars in the city? Le Grand Salon du Nolinski offers a large selection of very creative and tasty cocktails, [and] the wild atmosphere during the cabaret once a month is very unique. The 228 Rivoli at Le Meurice, a cosy, small and intimate place where every barman is a master of the craft, and the nightly live music is sumptuous. Brunch and high tea are Sunday favourites, where would you suggest to our readers to enjoy the best treats? BigLove Caffè, an all-day Italian brunch in the Marais. Inside, a very warm and authentic atmosphere with its wooden shelves filled with Italian deli products. Do not miss the blueberry pancakes made with buffalo milk ricotta.
