An enticing event-oriented series of exhibitions are on in the French capital offering a wide panorama of themes and works. To mark the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing, there is a major show devoted to the Moon while on another register a major figure in the world of beauty, Helena Rubinstein, is the object of an exhibition. The always fascinating world of Ancient Egypt is on display with an exceptional show presenting the treasure of Pharaoh Tutankhamun while a colourful show offers a rare insight into German Expressionism.

T

he Musée de l’Orangerie is presenting a beautiful exhibition entitled The Adventure of the Blue Rider, devoted to the works of two German artists, Franz Marc and August Macke, who were key figures in the artistic movement known in German as Der Blaue Reiter or The Blue Rider, a movement that lasted from 1911 until 1914 and was a key component of Expressionism. The two painters met in Munich in 1910 and were greatly influenced by the French painters Cézanne, van Gogh and Gauguin. Their first paintings expressed the same fascination for nature and landscapes and they are dominated by rich and dreamy colours. August Macke’s depiction of a forest stream astounds by its simple bold lines while Franz Marc’s Study in Green is an exuberant celebration of the colour green. The show, which runs through to June 17th, brings together some 100 paintings, most of which have never been exhibited before in France, tracing the unique paths of these two artists whose destiny was tragic, both were killed on the front in World War I. A legendary woman is being honoured at the Musée d’Art de d’Histoire du Judaïsme in an exhibition entitled Helena Rubinstein, the Beauty Adventure. More than 300 documents, objects, apparel, photographs, paintings and sculptures have been brought together to retrace the career journey of the founder of the eponymous beauty empire, of a woman whom Jean Cocteau designated the Empress of Beauty. Born in Krakow in 1872, Helena Rubinstein would reinvent the culture of beauty by adapting it to modern times. A visionary, she would put science at the service of cosmetics as soon as she opened her first salon in Melbourne in 1902. She would live between New

York, London and Paris, a city she particularly appreciated and where she would assemble her exceptional art collection. The show, which is running through to August 25th, recounts her journey through the cities that played an important role in her life, Krakow, Vienna, Melbourne, London, Paris, New York and Tel-Aviv. To mark the 50th anniversary of man’s first steps on the Moon, the Grand Palais is hosting a major exhibition organised by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux devoted to this celestial body celebrating the long history that links humans to the moon through artworks and objects that embody the countless visions and emotions it has inspired. Entitled The Moon, the five-part exhibition is a journey to the Moon itself, a voyage in time revealing artistic creations from Antiquity to modern times, produced mainly in Europe but also by African, Arab and Far Eastern civilisations. The exhibition begins with the real journey to the Moon in July of 1969 for with the Apollo 11 expedition, the journey became a reality and gear that went into outer space are on display as well, like an Omega Speedmaster Chronograph watch, the watch worn by the NASA astronauts, and a replica of the Hasselblad 500 EL Electric Lunar Surface camera, which took the first pictures on the surface of the Moon. The show, which is running through to July 22nd, then sways into imaginary journeys to, and visions and interpretations of, the moon. To shuttle from the space age into the depths of Antiquity, step into the astounding exhibition devoted to King Tutankhamun taking place for the first time in over 50 years in Paris. the famous pharaoh are on display in an exhibition entitled, Tutankhamun, The Treasure of the Pharaoh. The show, displaying fascinating artefacts from the treasure-laden tomb, is being presented by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and IMG in the Grande Halle de la Villette in collaboration with the Louvre. The immersive exhibition presents a selection of 150 original objects found in the tomb including numerous personal objects that accompanied the young king in life and into the afterlife, like gold jewellery, sculptures and there is a special focus on ritual objects. The show, which is running through to September 15th, offers an exceptional journey into the permanently fascinating civilisation of ancient Egypt. A PROVENÇAL

Getaway By Sandra Iskander

The French commune of Les Baux de Provence is arguably one of the most beautiful villages in the country and with reportedly only 22 people residing here the village lends itself to being one of the most sought-after destinations for people who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger towns. In the heart of the town is where the Château des Baux is located, built in the 10th century it is perched high, overlooking the village. It is here at the chateau that you can discover the reconstruction of the trebuchet that was used to attack fortified sites during sieges. Measuring 16 metres in height the trebuchet was designed and reconstructed based on medieval drawings and visitors to the site can attend catapult demonstrations that are held here daily. Just five minutes from the chateau is another incredible site that is worthy of a visit. Unlike any other cultural space, the Carrières de Lumières, once a stone quarry, organises temporary exhibitions that showcase the works of renowned artists including Chagall, Monet and Renoir. Using 100 video 16 W H E R E PA R I S I M A I 2019

projectors projecting images onto the entire surface of the former stone quarry including the ground, covering the space with wonderful images, the space becomes an interactive show, visually and musically, as visitors are invited to walk around discovering the works while the images are projected on them as well, in turn becoming part of the show themselves. This year, and through to the 5th of December, 2020, it is Van Gogh who is being honoured at the Carrières de Lumières, with the Starry Night exhibit, bringing Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous pieces, including Sunflowers, The Church at Auvers and of course The Starry Night to the unique exhibition space. Made up of three mountain ranges, the Lesser Luberon, the Greater Luberon and the Eastern Luberon, the Luberon region is dotted with picturesque villages found in the valleys around these ranges. One of the most famous villages in the valleys is Lourmarin, which is surrounded by lush vineyards and olive groves, and it is where Albert Camus once lived and worked. Full of charm with winding streets taking you through its heart, passing quaint squares and boutiques offering regional delights, the village is the epitome of the French countryside, which has been captured and idolised by many around the world, most notably by British writer Peter Mayle who wrote A Year in Provence, which was later made into a film, entitled A Good Year. While the village is the real gem here, you will also not want to miss seeing

F

rance is known around the world for its vast and varied offerings, from the museums and boutiques in Paris to the beaches of the Côte d’Azur, and one of the regions that many people dream of discovering is Provence with its rolling hills and picturesque towns. Here, we turn our attention to the charming destination and share with you the best hotels, spas and restaurants to discover.

the Renaissance castle and if you are in the area on a Friday make sure you make time to discover the Lourmarin market where the open-air market shows off local talents and edible specialties. Colourful handmade ceramic bowls, herbs and spices, and locally made soaps are only some of the souvenirs that you can find. While in the region one of the most extraordinary natural wonders to discover is the Ochre of Roussillon. Often referred to as the grand canyon of the South of France, the Ochre of Roussillon sees hiking trails that guide tourists up the fiery red valley, with magnificent panoramic views on display. Meanwhile, for thrill-seeking visitors a visit of the Verdon Gorge is not to be missed. Europe’s largest canyon, Verdon Gorge is striking in colour with its turquoise waters attracting kayakers and rock climbers who scale its limestone walls. And for visitors who would prefer to smell the roses, or rather the lavender, Provence is renowned around the world for its lavender fields, most notably those located in the village of Valensole. The small village is home to the Musée de la Lavande, a museum dedicated to the popular flowering plant, and is also the host of the annual Lavender Festival, which is held on the third Sunday of July.

If you are planning on winding your way down the coast, a stop at Marseille is highly recommended. France’s second largest city, and the country’s largest city on the Mediterranean coast, Marseille, brings the charm of a port city and the attraction of a big city together to offer visitors a slice of quaint with a topping of city lights. The city’s main attraction is of course the port itself, the Old Port, which is encircled by cafes and restaurants from which visitors can enjoy a glass of rosé wine as they watch the boats come in and out of the harbour. Looking up from the port visitors can see the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica that beautifully sits at the highest point of Marseille. The Romano-Byzantine basilica is perched on the highest point of the city, offering a breath-taking panoramic view of Marseille. When the sun is out and the water is calm one thing that is not to be missed while in Marseille is seeing the Massif des Calanques. Stretching over 20 kilometres, the limestone calanques can be discovered and admired by boat along the turquoise waters inching you close to the breath-taking cliffs. Boat cruises are organised daily between April and October, though are subject to weather conditions. To organise your boat trip you can see your concierge to organise the trip or visit the ticket offices peppered around the port, from where the boats leave. For visiting enthusiasts of great architecture, a stop by the Cité Radieuse will count as quite the interesting discovery. The building complex built in the 50s was designed by Swiss architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier, who created a city within a city with this avant-garde complex that is made up of 337 apartments, shops, bookshop, a restaurant and even a hotel. The Cité Radieuse, a listed historical monument, offers guided tours, walking you through the remarkable building that demonstrates how every detail was thought out by the architect, from how the post was delivered to every home to how every apartment was alternated in design, so as to reduce noise exposure from the neighbours. w w w.pa r i s m a p. fr 17

Of course visiting the Luberon region is incomplete without sampling some of the fine French wines produced here. Just 10 minutes from Lourmarin is the village of Lauris, sitting on a cliff with a panoramic view of the Durance valley, and it is where you will find Domaine de Fontenille, a hotel built on 35 hectares with sweeping vineyards. Made onsite, the hotel’s wines, including the rosé with delicate notes of raspberry, are all served at the establishment’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Champ des Lunes, where chef Jérôme Faure is at the helm. The menu changes frequently but is always modern and features fresh and seasonal produce, with the dishes beautifully complemented to one of the house’s wines, which also includes a certified organic rosé.

For a unique accommodation experience the Crillon le Brave is quite the hotel and spa to spend your time in the French countryside. Located in the heart of the tiny Crillon le Brave village, the hotel seemingly melts into the village with the house-like rooms and suites opening directly onto the streets of this picturesque town, offering guests a local resident feel. The 5-star hotel boasts two restaurants including La Madeleine, the establishment’s fine dining restaurant that puts the spotlight on regional produce and an impressive wine list that references over 600 wines, with a majority from the surrounding Rhône Valley. The hotel also organises wine tastings for connoisseurs as well as guided visits to neighbouring vineyards.

Besides its proximity to the Circuit Paul Ricard, where the Grand Prix de France is held, the Hotel & Spa du Castellet, the five-star establishment is a wonderful discovery for visitors looking to unwind and indulge in award-winning cuisine. Winner of the 2017 Prix Villégiature award for Best Hotel Restaurant in Europe, the hotel restaurant is a three Michelin star table that showcases the culinary talents of chef Christophe Bacquié. While the menu changes regularly with the chef using only the freshest seasonal produce, one of his signature dishes that is always the star of the menu is the Aioli Moderne, a fresh bouquet of vegetables served with a creamy aioli sauce, bringing the tastes of Provence to your table. Another highlight at this fine table is the cheese course, while most restaurants bring the cheese trolley to you, here at the Christophe Bacquié Restaurant, diners are invited into the cheese cellar where a spectacular show of different French cheeses is fantastically displayed.

Another incomparable experience in Provence is courtesy of La Bastide de Gordes, the region’s only Palace hotel that is nestled in the postcard village of Gordes. Nominated for the 2018 Prix Villégiature for the Most Charming Hotel in Europe award, the hotel boasts, arguably, Provence’s most famous swimming pool. Overlooking the stunning Luberon valley, the hotel offers guests a relaxing dip in the pool with a gorgeous panoramic view that is both wonderfully relaxing and luxurious with its blissful silence bar the sound of the water splashing. When the sun begins to set a glass of chilled rosé is mandatory and there is no better seat in the house to watch the romantic sunset than from the hotel’s La Citadelle restaurant. The restaurant offers sweeping views of the valley from its terrace, and serves traditional Provençal dishes.

The Hotel & Spa du Castellet also boasts a 6-hole golf course for avid golfers looking to work off any extra wine and cheese they may have indulged in. Recognised by the French Golf Federation, the course is located in the heart of the hotel’s gorgeous park. And for visitors looking to prolong the bliss of being away and in the countryside, the hotel also has a spa onsite where massages and facials can be enjoyed.

A Standout Print Maison Père has created a unique collection inspired by the very thing most people try to avoid blending into, the background. The Parisian ready-to-wear brand has teamed up with wallpaper specialists Maison Ananbô to create an exotic voyage to dress a capsule collection composed of a pair of pants, skirt, shirt, dress and a sexy kimono. The summer collection, while inspired by a wallpaper print promises to help you stand out in a crowd or on the beach in the South of France. - S.I.

Pop-Up Jewellery French jewellery designer Annelise Michelson has opened up her very first pop-up boutique, and with the new ephemeral address comes a new collection from the Paris-based designer. In a space designed by Mathias Kiss, Annelise will be showcasing her statement jewellery including her very first collection of hair accessories until early June. Headbands, hair ties and clips, inspired by the designer’s graphic jewellery collections, including her Wire line, make the hair accessories standout pieces just like her jewellery. Also on-show is her new collection, Vertigo, with rings, earrings and bracelets featuring a twisted effect. - S.I. Annelise Michelson 7 rue du Vertbois (3rd)

Happy Birthday Barbie Dressed up in Dior and looking like Grace Kelly, or dressed up like Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy, and in the iconic black and white striped swimsuit that she wore when she was first released 60 years ago in 1959. Barbie is celebrating her six decades of existence this year and a superb exhibition of 60 black and white photographs of the iconic doll by Michel Tréhet is being presented at the Galerie Isabelle Laverny. Each carefully framed and beautifully lit photograph tells a story with Barbie wearing outfits created by some of the greatest names in French fashion, from Givenchy to Christian Dior, Chanel and Louboutin. Through the show Barbie is metamorphosed into a woman of ultimate grace and elegance. - P.V. Showing from May 16th through to June 4th 27 rue Guersant (17th), 01 45 72 55 69

The Musée de Montmartre is presenting the captivating and bold works of the 20th century French artist Georges Dorignac, a figure of Modern Art. Drawings were his specialty, particularly his highly original black drawings, and he was an accomplished draughtsman of whom Rodin would say, “Dorignac sculpts his drawings.” The exhibition, entitled Corps et Ames (Bodies and Souls), brings together an ensemble of 85 works created between 1901 and 1924, some half of which have never been shown to the public before and which emanate from public and private collections and galleries. The body of works reveal the artist’s constant experimentations with various techniques, subjects and inspirations to such an extent that his art is unclassifiable. He maintained strong links to La Ruche, an artist’s residence grouping together studios and a collective exhibition space in the Montparnasse neighbourhood of Paris. - P.V. Captivating Nature The high jewellery house of Chaumet is offering a discovery of the natural world in an exhibition entitled Dess(e)in de Nature (Drawing Nature), which explores the world of nature that has been a hallmark theme in the house’s collections through the centuries. Through wheat swaying in the wind, lilies and briar roses, reeds and butterflies, from its inception, the house of Chaumet has drawn inspiration from the beauty of the natural world. The show brings together some 100 drawings dating from the 1830s to the early 20th century ranging from detailed studies evoking botanical plates, to inspirational sketches to execution drawings juxtaposed with the final resulting jewels or pieces of gold or silver-smithing. The show was curated by Marc Jeanson who is an engineer of agronomy and a botanist who is in charge of the National Herbarium collection at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. - P.V. Over to Oceania A rare exhibition is underway at the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac devoted to the faraway lands of Oceania. It was 200 years ago that Captain James Cooke made that first voyage to the far side of the world (from the European geographical point of view) and for the first time in France a major exhibition, entitled Oceania, is being devoted to this beguiling continent of 25,000 islands. Almost 200 works, both ancient and contemporary, have been brought together to tell the tale of the cultures and peoples of these islands while presenting a panorama of Oceanic art. The show revolves around four themes, voyaging, place making, encounters and memories, offering an insight and understanding into the Oceanic arts and a unique way of life while proposing a reflection on the world of Oceania. Intricately carved canoes, fine body ornaments, figures of mysterious divinities and contemporary videos and installation works reveal how ancestral memory, tradition and modernity are all part of the arts of Oceania. - P.V. Body from Soul Muscles, flesh, bones, blood vessels, the human body in all of its details is tastefully explored in the large-scale, highly aesthetic drawings of the Parisian-born artist Arghaël. The Loo & Lou Gallery is presenting a host of his works in a show entitled Métamorphe(s), which explores the unique techniques of this artist whose drawings, seem to be one-dimensional sculptures. He uses the mineral qualities of charcoal, oil and chalk alone or in a combination to render the human and literally the inner human on canvases of linen. These giants, sketched in largely inorganic materials, gifted with exaggerated extremities, strange faces that appear to vanish, seem at times to be in levitation. - P.V. WHERE PARIS PROMOTION

t was back in 1991 that a venue opened up in Montmartre showcasing a private collection of some 300 works, sculptures, engravings, objects and furnishings by Salvador Dalí offering a unique glimpse into the work and world of the Surrealist sculptor, designer, engraver and illustrator. Dalí Paris re-opened its doors to the public last April offering a new journey into the world of the artist and enabling the public to discover the art dealer and collector, Beniamino Levi, who assembled the collection, which remains the only permanent exhibition in France, devoted to Dalí, the master of Surrealism. Beniamino Levi, an eminent Italian gallery owner started putting the collection together in the 1970s. Upon returning to Milan after the Second World War, he frequented actors in the effervescent artistic scene, notably Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri and became friends with the art critic Franco Passoni with whom he opened the Galleria Levi in Milan. He first met Dalí in 1974 in his suite at the Meurice hotel where Dalí and his wife Gala resided during their Parisian sojourns. Levi would first purchase two paintings, the 1932 Egg on the Dish without the Dish and The Invisible Harp done in 1934, which he exhibited in his gallery in Milan. After additional encounters in Paris, New York and Dalí’s home in Cadaquès in Spain, the collector launched into a new challenge, editing the sculptures of Dalí and he would progressively acquire the rights to 29 images taken from the artist’s most celebrated paintings including the Persistence of Memory, the Temptation of Saint Anthony and The Burning Giraffe, giving him the possibility of having bronzes made from models conceived by the artist. The bronze sculptures

of these images were cast in Switzerland at the legendary Perseo Foundry, which casts the work of Alberto Giacometti and Fernando Botero. Today, Dalí Paris, which has been given a redesign by the architect and scenographer Adeline Rispal offers a meander through the artist’s works and allows the visitor to embark on a non-exhaustive journey into the artistic path taken by Dalí and revealing a not so well known segment of his work while putting the spotlight on his technique and creativity. The museum segways into a gallery and while the museum presents rare sculptures, the gallery offers these works in different sizes and patinas for collectors in limited editions. The venue also hosts exhibits devoted to contemporary artists and little known aspects of Dalí’s work in a dedicated gallery space.

At Work People at work, in fields and in factories, in offices or offshore and even more unusual and remote venues are the object of a photography exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Labour Organization being presented by the French Senate on the gates of the Luxembourg Gardens. Entitled EtreS au Travail (which can mean both to be at work or beings working), the exhibition explores men and women working through 80 photographs by Magnum Photos and independent photographers. The photographs are accompanied by texts written by experts in the Human and Social Sciences who like the photographers, analyse and interpret the world of work. The show, which was proposed by the association Lumières sur le Travail (shedding light on work), offers a glimpse at among others, workers in the rice fields of Vietnam, a smelter in a steelworks in northern France and fishermen on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. - P.V.

The Spiritual and the Serene A journey of contemplation, wisdom and serenity into the Himalayas is on view at the La Hune bookstore and art gallery in the Saint-Germaindes Prés neighbourhood through the photographs of the Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard. Entitled A Half a Century in the Himalayas, the exhibition offers a unique look into the peoples of this part of the world, the Buddhist monasteries, the spiritual masters and monks, the nomadic communities, sacred sites and the remotest of natural settings. Prints of the photographs in the exhibition have been brought out in limited numbered editions of eight, printed on handmade Japanese Bizan washi paper made in the Awagami factory. The revenues from the prints and associated book and conferences by Matthieu Ricard are donated in their entirety to the Fondation Matthieu Ricard and the KarunaShechen association, which work to accompany populations in Asia in the fields of health, education, social services and the environment. - P.V. A MOVING JOURNEY

Eight decades later the world of cinema that Langlois endeavoured to conserve lives on in a light-filled modern building designed by Frank O. Gehry in which the world of motion pictures is revealed through a museum, exhibitions, projections, a film library and bookshop. It offers a complete cinematic experience for film lovers and is a perfect place for neophytes to discover cinema of the world, of all ages and of all genres. Visitors enter the Gehry building, which is built around a monumental hall that is thoroughly drenched by incoming light and outfitted with large bay windows and small balconies, and within will discover collections where over 40,000 films, 3000 costumes, 23,000 posters, 14,000 drawings and 2,300 objects are conserved. For conservation, restoration and enrichment are the missions of La Cinémathèque française, which lends as much importance to non-film objects (archives, books, projection machines and cameras, accessories

and costumes), as it does to films. La Cinémathèque’s Musée du Cinéma exhibits some 600 objects enabling visitors to journey over three centuries into the universe of animated images. Magic Lanterns, optical boxes as well as costumes worn by, among others, Vivien Leigh and Greta Garbo, are on hand as well as a host of extraordinary objects, notably the robot from Metropolis by Fritz Lang and the head of Mrs Bates in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock. Temporary exhibitions devoted to major figures in film are regularly presented as well. The current show is a focus on the great Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini and the profound admiration he had for Pablo Picasso. The exhibition, entitled Quand Fellini Rêvait de Picasso (When Fellini Dreamed of Picasso), takes a look at the imaginary dialogue Fellini undertook with the artist, resulting in his own drawings, and explores the themes that both of the celebrated artists held dear: myths,

the female figure, dance and the world of the carnival. The show, which is running from April 3rd, 2019 through to July 28th, 2019, brings together photographs, drawings, posters, archives, costumes and accessories. In parallel to the exhibition, La Cinémathèque française will be presenting a retrospective of Fellini’s films. Some 40 films are projected each week at La Cinémathèque française in the establishment’s four movie theatres with programmes revolving around major directors, actors and technicians but also the young generation of filmmakers. A host of activities including conferences and master classes are also organised around the projection programmes. There is also an excellent restaurant serving homemade dishes using seasonal products.

he wonderful world of cinema can be discovered right in Paris at La Cinémathèque française, home to one of the finest collections and archives in the world devoted to film. It was back in 1936 that Henri Langlois, a French film archivist, cinephile and a pioneer in film preservation, created La Cinémathèque française to save from destruction films, projection machines, costumes, posters and other cinematic treasures. He would be given an Honorary Oscar in 1974, “for his untiring devotion to the art of film, for his massive contributions towards preserving its historical past and for his unswerving faith in its future.”

A Taste of the Mediterranean Evok Hotels Collection’s new baby, Le Brach, is Paris’s latest hotspot. Designed by Philippe Starck, the hotel boasts a restaurant with chef Adam Bentalha at the helm, who serves up a melting pot of dishes made to share with a nod to the diversity of Mediterranean cuisine, ranging from Lebanese to of course French. Try the creamy hummus dip made with organic chickpeas and the beef tartare seasoned with harissa for a Lebanese feast, for French flair try the fresh goat cheese sprinkled with oregano and drizzled with olive oil, or opt for the grilled octopus. For a taste of Greece order the oven roast chicken served with tasty tzatziki or the Kalamata olive paste mixed in with basil and anchovies, and if your taste buds are craving an Italian getaway order the saffron arancini balls served with salmon. Dessert here is served courtesy of French pastry chef Yann Brys, who holds the prestigious title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France, with his Paris Brest a delicious favourite. Le Brach is a fantastic address if you are looking for a fun vibe while in Paris especially on the weekend. In the cool homey décor complete with colourful throw pillows, the restaurant welcomes a DJ to fire up your evenings every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Reservations are highly recommended. – S.I.

A Frenchy Dinner When the French adopt a new trend they do so wholeheartedly and with sharing plates the only way to dine amongst Parisians now it is nice to know that there is still variety and quality French food to enjoy when visiting the culinary capital even when dining tapas-style. A charming little address to enjoy French cuisine whilst still respecting the latest trend of sharing is Les Françaises, where everyone is greeted with a welcome shot of the day’s cocktail. Once seated, diners can sit to a feast of beef tartare, Gouda cheese with black truffles and salmon gravlax served with cream of avocado. The restaurant is open for dinner only from 6pm to midnight and offers a cocktail menu that is sure to please cocktail amateurs. - S.I. A Taste of Greece After months of renovations, Greek restaurant Mavrommatis has reopened with a modern décor and a first Michelin star. Chef Andréas Mavrommatis is at the helm, serving dishes from his homeland where using fresh produce, and in particular Greek produce, is a hallmark of his cuisine. Forget moussaka and all the clichés that come with Greek cuisine, here the chef serves contemporary dishes including lobster cannelloni served with cream of cauliflower infused with ouzo, roasted pigeon seasoned with cinnamon and cumin, and grilled red tuna sprinkled with zaatar and served with Provençal vegetables and smoked bottarga. The restaurant offers two degustation menus to choose from in the evening, however, vegetarians and vegans will have a little bit of difficulty in dining as well as fellow diners, so choosing à la carte is highly recommended, although again choice is limited, only compensated by a great selection of Greek wines. – S.I. French chef Anne-Sophie Pic’s Michelin-starred restaurant, La Dame de Pic, is a wonderful initiation to fine dining in Paris where a cosy atmosphere and service with a smile await. The charming restaurant is inviting with a delicate décor and an open kitchen where you can watch head chef Frédéric Aumeunier at work. The menu here is inspired by Pic’s hometown of Valence where seasonal dishes are brought out to star in pleasingly attractive and delicious dishes. Try the al dente ravioli filled with creamy Brillat-Savarin cheese served on a bed of mushrooms lightly flavoured with Tonka beans, before tasting the veal Wellington served with anchovy and drizzled with Limoncello-infused gravy. The head sommelier, Mathieu Dufraisse, is of course on-hand to suggest the perfect drop to accompany you throughout your dinner. An extra point goes to this restaurant for opening for lunch and dinner every day of the week. – S.I. La Dame de Pic 20 rue du Louvre (1st), 01 42 60 40 40 58 W HE R E PA R I S I M A I 2019

French Champagne for Dinner Champagne lovers and fans of excellent and very inventive contemporary French cuisine will want to make a beeline for Substance, a new address with a sleek low-lit petroleum blue décor of modern art and light fixtures in the 16th arrondissement. Owner Stéphane Manigold and celebrated Champagne maker Anselme Selosse signed the wine list here, which includes over 170 different references, one of the largest and best in Paris. Meanwhile, young chef Matthias Marc works in an open kitchen behind a red marble bar, and he sends out superb dishes like sea bream tataki with cucumber rolls and a mango condiment, grilled scallops with butternut squash and smoked eel, and roast chicken with pickled lemons, cockles and celeriac cooked in a crust of salt. Don’t miss the chocolate soufflé for dessert, and expect a relaxed atmosphere and a stylish crowd. – Alexandre Lobrano Substance 18 rue de Chaillot (16th), 01 47 20 08 90

All About Beef Tucked away in Montmartre, and so a great address after exploring one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods in Paris, new address, Les Fines Lames, is a friendly carnivores’ cave that’s open daily for both lunch and diner. The menu is built around highest quality beef from Nadaud-Delahaye, a third generation butcher, and it’s served in a variety of preparations for both large and small appetites. Settle in to this warm relaxed dining room with overhead lights cleverly hidden inside of oak wine barrels sawn in half, and begin with roasted marrow bones or coddled eggs with Beaufort cheese, cream and chorizo, and then go for a steak tartare of Charolais beef, or maybe a filet or bavette (flank steak). There’s also a big côte de boeuf (rib steak) for two, and all mains come with a choice of fries, regular or sweet potato, sautéed vegetables or salad. The restaurant also offers an excellent and very reasonably priced wine list by a former sommelier at the famous La Tour d’Argent. N.B. This place is all about beef. – A.L. Mediterranean Savours In a brasserie-like atmosphere Malro invites you to enjoy a Mediterranean cuisine, borrowing from the different traditional dishes found along the coast. Start with the Middle Eastern hommus served with freshly baked bread sprinkled with zaatar before choosing from Italian pasta dishes and pizza or perhaps the day’s catch served with seasonal vegetables. For dessert the taste of Greece is served via the Greece cake, a Mediterranean take on the cheesecake made with feta and Greek yoghurt. The restaurant also boasts a bar that serves up signature cocktails that restyle old favourites including the Amaretto Sour made with almond milk. Now they’ve arrived in Paris with a sleek new restaurant just a few steps from the Gare Saint-Lazare, the busiest train station in France. Fine Dining As a food writer in Paris for thirty years, one of the questions I’m asked most often is where to go for that special night out. This is because no one wants to make an expensive mistake. It’s also a tough question, because it depends on what you’re looking for, some people want traditional French cooking in a classically elegant dining room, others are keen to discover the best contemporary French cooking in a setting that has an edge of modernity. If you’re after the latter, a meal in the intimate dining room with a salt-crystal-like glass ceiling at chef Jean-François Piège’s Le Grand Restaurant, now almost four years old, will likely make you very happy. Expect exquisitely delicate dishes like rock lobster roasted on a paving stone with marigold emulsion and a sauce matelote, sea bass smothered in salt butter with saffron, nasturtiums and bottarga (pressed fish eggs) and veal sweetbreads cooked in a casserole on a bed of walnut shells. Le Grand Dessert, a suite of seven tasting-portion sized desserts, is the best in Paris. – A.L. Le Grand Restaurant par Jean-Francois Piège 7 rue d’Augusseau (8th), 01 53 05 00 00

In Paris finding a good casual eatery in between the standard lunch hour and dinner isn’t always easy, apart from brasseries of course, however, when in the mood for something other than a Croque Monsieur or a steak et frites it is nice to know that Café lai’Tcha is open. Adeline Grattard, the talented chef of starred restaurant Yam’Tcha, is behind Café lai’Tcha, a casual restaurant that serves tapas-style Asian cuisine. Located in the bustling Les Halles neighbourhood, this is a good spot for a quick meal in between shopping along the neighbouring Rue Saint-Honoré or in the Forum des Halles. The menu changes regularly here but dishes to share could include stir-fried vegetables with a hint of chilli, spring rolls and noodles or perhaps try the fried rice, chicken skewers with satay sauce and the tofu and cucumber salad. The restaurant is open from 11am to 8pm, Wednesday to Saturday, and is open from 10.30am to 6pm for Sunday brunch and afternoon tea. – S.I. A Scented Cocktail In celebration of its 90th birthday, the Prince de Galles hotel has just released a collection of perfumes that have inspired the hotel bar’s new cocktail menu. Barman Florian Thireau and nose Jean-Charles Sommerard have worked together to bring patrons a novel way in enjoying a cocktail, starting with an olfactory invitation. Guests are invited to smell the fragrances, decide which is their favourite, and a cocktail inspired by the scent is then served up to be admired by all the senses. An original way to choose a cocktail and a fabulous way to celebrate a huge milestone. - S.I. Les Heures Bar Prince de Galles Hotel 33 ave George V (8th), 01 53 23 77 77

Be Careful What You Wish For The City of Light has introduced another bar into its nightly mix, courtesy once more to Hotel 1K who is already home to the speakeasy La Mezcaleria and a Pisco bar. This time though the hotel is hiding a speakeasy bar within a speakeasy. The secret bar, La Malicia is accessed through La Mezcaleria, behind an unmarked door. Simply present yourself and you will be guided through a dark space that will lead to what is now our favourite bar. Once inside you are presented with 7 cards, each with a different potion, while an eighth card reveals the bar’s champagne menu. You can either choose your potion based on what you wish for, wealth, beauty, chance or to keep the evil eye away, or you can choose your choice of spirit and see what will be revealed to you. If you prefer vodka-based drinks then wealth will be served to you mixed in with champagne and lemon, and if you are wanting to stave off the evil eye then be prepared to sip on a potion of gin and olive oil. - S.I. ADVERTORIAL

“Learning to be French through Comedy” As tourists or expats in Paris there are some quirks we have all noticed among the Parisians, the way they march to their destinations, their constant pouting and the way they order at restaurants. Olivier Giraud has too, noticed that the Parisians are unique in their behaviour, and has decided to bring all those idiosyncrasies to light. Born in Bordeaux, Olivier moved to Paris to study hotel management and after graduating he moved to the Unites States where he managed a restaurant of a 5-star hotel. After four years, and many soul-searching nights, he decided to return to France and follow his real dream of becoming a

comedian. Having experienced the cultural differences between the Parisians and Americans while in Florida, and having observed for himself the tourists of all nationalities in Paris, he decided to not shy away from the hardhitting questions of how one becomes a real Parisian. How do you grab a waiter’s attention in a café? In the metro, what do you do if you see an older lady or a pregnant woman? And how do you behave in a cab? Putting together a one man show, How to become a Parisian in one hour?, the stand-up comic will leave you rolling in your seat from

laughter and 100% prepared for any situation in the City of Light. The ultimate Parisian theatre experience created by Olivier Giraud! Enjoyed by more than 500 000 spectators, this show is much more than a stand-up comedy! It’s a hilarious, incisive and visual observation of the Parisian behaviour! Performed 100% in English all year round in one of the most beautiful Italian Renaissance style theatres (600 seats) located in the lively heart of Paris... Ohlala! Non-stop laughter from a real Parisian guaranteed to leave you wanting more. This is THE PERFECT GUIDE to enjoy Paris and the Parisians!

Paris Metro ◗ Paris is crossed by 14 Métro lines and five RER (express suburban) lines, all numbered and named for their final destination (terminus). Did you know that there are 300 stations that make up Paris’ metro system?

80 W HE R E PA R I S I M A I 2019

◗ Each Métro trip requires one ticket regardless of how many transfers you make, though you must buy an extra ticket for the RER outside the city limits. Keep your ticket until you exit.

◗ Tickets are sold in all stations and in cafés (tabacs) with a ticket sign outside, single (1.90€/2€ if purchased on a bus) or by 10 (un carnet - 14.50€). This map includes the new tramway line.

◗ “Paris Visite” passes offer unlimited travel on the Métro and buses (1day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day). The Métro and RER start running at 5:30am, and stop around 1 am.

My Paris

CEDRIC GAZOU

HEAD CONCIERGE AT HOTEL DE SERS

Marché d’Aligre

Paris is known around the world as the City of Light. What would you recommend visitors do in the evenings to really take in its beauty? Ask your concierge to arrange for you a dinner cruise on the River Seine to discover Paris, the Ville Lumière (City of Light). As a culinary capital what are three of your favourite restaurants that you would recommend our readers to try? An everyday favourite, Jacopo, where the bistro food and the modern setting is a hidden gem in the Champs-Elysées district. Native from the south west of France, I would also highly recommend La Fontaine de Mars for its foie gras, duck confit and cassoulet and its impeccable service supervised by Madame Boudon. The location of this institution is also great, nestled next to the Fontaine du Gros-Caillou with some tables underneath the arcades of a small square. And if I would like to celebrate an important event and enjoy the most refined French gastronomy, I would definitely recommend the Guy Savoy restaurant at La Monnaie de Paris. What are the top three monuments not to be missed while in Paris? Paris offers more than 2 millenaries of history from Roman Antiquity to the Belle Époque splendour and more. The oldest monument, the ancient Egypt obelisk from the Luxor Temple found in Place de la Concorde, 82 W HE R E PA R I S I M A I 2019

Jacopo

dating back to the 13th century BC. The Notre Dame de Paris, and the highest building and the icon of the City of Light, the Eiffel Tower of course. If our readers wanted to spend their day shopping, would you recommend they do so on the Left Bank or the Right Bank? Having been both a concierge on the Right Bank and the Left Bank I would have to say I have a slight preference for the Left Bank, the Boulevard Saint Germain, Rue du ChercheMidi, and the Bon Marché are so Parisian. What would be the most romantic date in the capital of romance? I got married in Montmartre so I would definitely recommend a place in Montmartre, perhaps the Mandragore restaurant in the Hôtel Particulier before or after a stroll in the streets of this former village. What would you recommend for families to discover while visiting the French capital? Your favourite three childrenfriendly spots. I am lucky enough to live in Paris not very far from the Natural History Museum and with my two daughters we often go to the Menagerie or the Gallery of the Evolution. Also the Jardin d’Acclimation next to the Louis Vuitton Foundation is a paradise for kids. But I should also mention the Louvre Museum, which offers a wide range of activities for children on the first Saturday of every month.

Place de la Concorde

What are your favourite cocktail bars in the city? Le Serpent à Plume on Place des Vosges. The Balagan cocktail bar. And a Left Bank favourite, l’Arbane. Brunch and high tea are Sunday favourites, where would you suggest to our readers to enjoy the best treats? Sunday brunch at the Restaurant de Sers, to be enjoyed in the lovely courtyard. On the Left Bank I would recommend brunch at Thoumieux, put together by Michelinstarred chef Sylvestre Wahid. For high tea, Le Meurice and Cédric Grolet would be an unforgettable experience. Not forgetting the Ritz and their Madeleine de Proust teatime.

My Perfect Day 9am: Feel the true vibe of the most popular Parisian market at Marché d’Aligre 12pm: Lunch at Benoît, an Alain Ducasse bistro where you can taste the season in your plate 3pm: Shopping and visiting the Marais district with its beautiful mansion houses followed by teatime at Carette. 9pm: The Lido cabaret followed by a late dinner at Speakeasy piano bar and restaurant.
