For the very first time, how you doing Western Key Club? It has been a month and a few days since I was installed as your very own President, and it cannot feel any better. If you do not know who I am, I am an energetic, outgoing, friendly, and hardworking Sophomore who unconditionally fell in love with Key Club in his Freshmen year. Writing my first letter feels bittersweet because i only have a one first time. Although the 2018-2019 term only started about a month ago, as a club, we have strongly accomplished so much already: from increasing attendance at DCMs, to more service hours, to raising funds for Eliminate Project, and so much more. That would have not been done without YOUR endless and worthy contribution to this amazing organization. I am forever thankful for all of you for allowing me and giving me a chance to prosper as your President. I am seriously beyond excited to take you along the amazing adventure that this club will take. So, let’s all pack up and get ready for the awesome adventure we are about to witness as a club. As Western Key Club! I love you all so much! Lastly, summer is almost here so hang in there, let’s get them bad boiz (hours) increased & let’s maintain being the most spirited club across Division 30 South!

SOCAL SPRING CORGI BEACH DAY April 7th 2018, Western Key Clubbers had an amazing day spending for volunteering at SoCal Spring Corgi Beach Day. SoCal Corgi Beach Day is held 3 times a year- Spring, Summer and Fall at Huntington Dog Beach. It is a really great event which is free and fun-filled with bunch of exciting activities and booths, such as doggie limbo contests, corgi costume & talent contests, vendors, food trucks and giveaways as well! And it is also a great opportunity to see the corgis all over from California or even from other areas. During this event, Western Key Clubbers set up for booths in the morning, and walked around at the beach to give helping hands for whoever needed. Other than that, all we did was just having spontaneous fun with all the adorable corgis! This event is actually one of my favorite event from Key Club, not only because of the corgis but also because I get the chance to know more about Key Clubbers from my home club and maybe even from other schools’ Key Club and you can have so much fun with them at the beach, because everyone is all excited at the beach. I mean who does not like the beach in such a nice weather? Plus, if you see the adorable corgis moving their butt, anybody would feel better even though they are having a bad day. Especially, if you are a big dog lover, I really recommend you to go to this event. I swear you will love it!

- Joy Seo | Spirit Coordinator

SoCal Corgi Spring Beach Day was an amazing event to participate in. When I had originally signed up to volunteer I had no idea that a corgi would have peed on me, although it made it even a little bit better the fact that it was a corgi. Upon arrival to the beach, there was a slight overcast, but it did not put a damper on the mood of the event. I had enjoyed this event a great amount the first time, so I had to experience this again. As expected, vendors had been promoting their items by giving them away for free. Many vendors were also giving discounts to the volunteers for their hard work and it was a wonderful feeling because it made us or at least it made me feel appreciated. One of the main tasks we had was that we were helping people set up their tents and assisting them in setting up their displays. There was an ample amount of corgis, it was actually corgi heaven. Everywhere you went, there was another corgi, on every corner, at every tent. This event really made me remember and recognize that not everyone (or every corgi) is the same. Although many did look similar, some were dressed up and it gave them a unique difference. After our shifts were over, we had time to spare and we got to enjoy sometime at the beach together in which I thought that it brought us closer together, I look forward to the next one.

Hello everyone! This experience is something I’ll always be able to cherish. Corgis. Corgis. CORGIS. When I volunteered, I met many key club members from different schools outside of the AUHSD district. Despite my timid personality, they approached me with the their love for corgis! We got to help set up the tents that were set throughout the dog beach. I also got to walk around the venue with my new friends! There were many adorable corgi attractions, which ranged from food to dog collars. However the corgi macarons were unforgettable! When the event started, there were many people storming to gather around the booths. It was the beginning of a hectic experience for me. It was horrendous as people stepped on our barefoot just to avoid the long line that escalated quickly. The paws of the corgis were almost impossible to evade, along with large gatherings around certain booths. Despite the chaos, this experience gave me the opportunity to experience the ability to communicate with others while being able to adapt to shifting crowds.

STEM AND THE ARTS

SHOWCASE CAREER The STEM & The Arts Career Showcase was taken place for 3 days on April 13, 2018 through the 15th. This event was mostly aimed for children. Children were able to be introduced to many careers and things that involve STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics). The event was pretty big. It had a bunch of interactive booths like playing with robot cars and petting little chicks. We were greeted by friendly staff and assigned us volunteers in a booth. The booth had a CNC machine in which our task was to explain how the machine works to those who come up to the booth. We also gave out stickers for children who had bingo cards. It was a simple task. The staff did a great job on telling us what to do, and often checked on us if we ever needed anything. Also a few adults who were curious of these machines. Some even had careers that work along with these machines. It was great to get to know all these different kinds of people. We had many friendly talks with the people at the event. It was such a nice community and an overall great experience to have. - Danica Lopez | Historian STEM & The Arts Career Showcase was an event for those who were interested in the S.T.E.M field. You get to explore the careers by going from booth to booth. In the science section, you get to explore hands-on activities in environmental science, Biotechnology, etc. There was actually an area where we get to physically touch and see how a chicken evolves. In the technology section, you discover the machines such as the CNC machine, 3D printer, etc. In the engineering section, you get to connect with industry experts and watch a drone competition. In the mathematics section, there were workshops in making robots. Finally, in the art section, you get to see performances and exhibits in Digital Media Arts. It was an ongoing event that lasted from Friday, April 13 to Sunday, April 15, 2018. Families and schools got to visit the event and explore the different variety of careers. Volunteers were tasked to be in charge of a booth and inform the visitors about their booth. They were trained and informed about their booth. In this case, they were informed about the CNC Machine. The CNC machine is basically a machine that takes a block of steel and shape it into any other material. The computer connects with the machine in order to command its function. When any visitor comes by our booth, we would tell them about how it works. The CNC Machine is also a smaller version of a similar 3D printer machine. Not only do we talk about the machine, but we were also tasked to give them stickers for their card when they come to our booth. The reason stickers were being passed out was due to the fact that the visitors would have a bingo card. They would go have to go from booth to booth in order to receive a sticker for their card. When they get a bingo, they are able to put their card in a raffle where they can win a prize.

After our shift, we were able to explore the event. It was a nice and interesting event because I got to explore new careers that I didn’t really think about. - Khrystal Contreras | Vice President

Friday , April13-15, Reno, Nevada hosted the Cali-Nev-Ha District Convention. It was an event for our fellow key clubbers. Although it was a long ride it was worth it because it was memorable. All the division of Cali-Nev-Ha came together and celebrate the end of the term. It was a great opportunity to get to meet new people and to learn through different workshops. They had many activities. Everyone at DCON has the same reason as you on why they joined key club. To serve. They have the same passion and moti-

vation as you to serve our community. It's always fun to see people ask each other How Do You Feel. It was always full of spirit and positivity. The people there at so loud that it makes you want to be louder. Our general session mission was to award our fellow key clubbers and their hard work.

The last day of DCON was sad yet exciting. Sad because the term was ending for my fellow President. Exciting because the term was just starting and there was more to come.

Adrenaline running throughout my entire body as the bell to lunch rang. I am not that excited about lunch everyday, but I get excited when it is a Thursday because I know there will be a Key Club meeting. However, that Thursday, April 19th was different. It was my first general meeting as the club’s president; President! Words cannot describe how eager and excited I was to lead my first meeting. After listening to two presidents lead meetings every week, it was finally my term to do so. The adrenaline was consistent and did not leave my body until the end of the meeting. I would not say my first meeting went perfect, but I would say that it had an awesome turnout. Fun fact, I forgot to read the Key Club Pledge which we do at ALL meetings, but other than that, everything went great! Since it was the first meeting of the new term, I wanted to implement something hopeful and thoughtful. I passed around a nice poster that said, “During the 2018-2019 Key Club term, I want to…”. I had the members write whatever goals they have, and as President, a sense of responsibility kicked in, telling me that I will need to be by my members’ side every step of the way to help them reach their goals. The goals the members had were so eye-opening and lovely to read. They reminded me of how thrilling and meaningful this club is. I am beyond excited to continue leading meetings as Western Key Club’s President. - Ali Al-Saleem | President

Goodbye old board.. Hello to the new board. Thursday, April 19 marks the date of the first official general meeting for the ’18-’19 term. It was an exciting yet nerve-racking event that the new board has been waiting for. It was a nice day. The sun was shining and the weather wasn’t as bad. As always we planned the day before the actual event. The president, Ali Al-Saleem, would assign the tasks to each board member. Some of the tasks consist of Ali and I to lead meetings, Vicky Vu (secretary) to take notes, and the rest to help take care of the agendas, sign up sheets, as well as making sure things are running smoothly at the meeting. During Lunch, the board members were setting up. All of us wore yellow to show our spirit for Key Club. To make the meeting interesting, a poster was being passed around. The poster is basically a nice little term resolution for the members. The general members are to write what they want to accomplish in the ’18-’19 year. Throughout the meeting, Ali and I present the upcoming events. We discussed what they were, the volunteer tasks, when, and what time it will be. I was really nervous to present because I was afraid I would mess up. After some reassurance, I presented some of the events without stuttering. Additionally, since I knew the information, I was confident. Overall, the first meeting was a great run through and practice for the new term. I hope at the end of the term, I will get the courage to present without stuttering as much. - Khrystal Contreras | Vice President

The day has finally come. On April 19th, 2018 at 12:17pm the first meeting of the term officially started. In 4th period my nerves were finally setting in along with excitement. I was mentally preparing myself, knowing that it would soon be real. I was excited knowing that I would now be the one taking the notes, not just listening in the meeting. Before the meeting started, I brought out my laptop to take the meeting notes. Also, I asked other board members to help me set up the sign-up sheets in the back of the room. I brought up the outline for the notes and started preparing for the meeting to start. When I was ready, the meeting officially started. I was really focused, not wanting to miss anything that was being said. As the meeting went on I calmed down and just worked on my task. During the meeting, new events were getting introduced, as well as announcements. Before taking notes, I thought that I wouldn’t be good, but it turned out better than I thought. We passed around a large piece of poster for the new term resolutions. Although taking notes wasn’t the most complicated thing, I was proud of myself. I was proud for completing my first meeting notes of the term. Overall, I was happy about how the meeting turned out. I hope for the best and can’t wait to see what the 2018-2019 term has in store for us! - Vicky Vu | Secretary

On April 21, 2018, the 9th Annual Central County Health Expo offered free comprehensive medical, dental and vision services to residents. It was a first-come, first-served basis, and many participants came early. There were several participants who had not seen a doctor, so it was great for them to be checked up. Many people were able to receive help. There were 2 shifts; one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The afternoon shift did not need a lot of help as there were less patients. I was assigned to help out in the dental check in booth. My job was to guide people through some paperwork. My task did not take long and finished up early since there was nobody left. Other volunteers had tasks as translators, runners, and guiding people to their destination. The work was simple and it wasn’t too bad. The staffs were pretty nice and volunteers can take breaks and get food. I was also able to interact and meet different kinds of people there. Dental and medical service finished up before vision, so volunteers tasked in that area could leave or stick around. There were many people in need of their visions checked so it lasted longer. After everyone was done, volunteers were tasked to help clean up like putting away chairs and boxes. Overall, it’s great that these people were provided medical, vision, and dental service for free. It is a pleasure to be a part of this community in which we help out one another and those in need. - Danica Lopez | Historian

Bright and early in the afternoon on the corner of the street, lies a bustling college event. Through the help of medical professions at Concorde College and Senator Janet Nguyen, the event provides free comprehensive medical, dental and vision care from 8am to 1pm on April 21st. For someone with an interest in the medical field, it was an interesting sight. There were many doctors and nurses patiently assisting the clients and although they were bombarded with questions, each individual had a positive attitude. The outside booths were set up so the clients could easily maneuver their way into lines to register by filling out some forms. A booth designated for volunteers was also visibly seen. Due to a conflict, our names were not recorded on the list of volunteers, but we were not to fret as the kind lady reassured us that we were still able to volunteer. Wheew! The event felt very organized and professional.

The second shift was not as busy as the first, but nevertheless people still kept coming. Some tasks we were assigned was to be runners, translators, or help guide patients to their room. Towards the middle of our shift, we were gladly provided with subway and a bunch of snacks! Some of the volunteers from Western and I sat down to have a break and I got to learn more about my precious key clubbers. Near the end of our shift, we were given instructions to help clean up booths and rearrange the classrooms. I have never been to a medical volunteer event so it was a change of pace for me. I’ve learned more about my members and made new memories. Everyone was super friendly and helpful that I will definitely come back to this event in the future. - Ivy Vi | Member Recognition

On April 21st, 2018 Western Key Clubbers volunteered at the 9th Annual Central County Health Expo. This event was hosted by Senator Janet Nguyen and provided free medical, dental, and vision care to people unable to receive or afford it. After arriving, we checked in and got assigned to different tasks. There were many tasks assigned from park management to runner. The park manager was in charge of guiding people through the parking lot. I was assigned to be a translator. My task was to help translate for the people unable to speak in English. Most the other Key Clubbers were runners. Their task was to bring the patient and their file to the waiting room. We arrived later, so there weren’t too many tasks left to do. The overall vibe was calm. There were many other schools and people volunteering at this event too, making it collaborative. After helping out, they provided food for the volunteers to eat. This was great because we haven’t eaten lunch yet. We drank water to refresh ourselves too, stay hydrated! J Most of us stayed until the end of the event, so we helped with the clean up. We did things such as putting to chairs away and setting classrooms back to its original set up. The overall experience was nice getting to know the daily life of a doctor, and how things worked in an office. - Vicky Vu | Secretary

What a sunny, exuberant, and energetic Saturday afternoon! The first Division Council Meeting (DCM) of the 2018-2019 Key Club term was officially ordered on Saturday, April 30th, from 11am-1:30pm! The Division 30 South members across Anaheim and Cerritos were beyond excited to attend their first DCM and were beyond surprised with the activities that were planned with them. April DCM was an enormous success because it truly demonstrated the spirit that every member from D30S acquires. The clubs were divided into Buddy Groups and that group stayed together through thick and thin. Western Key Club was grouped up with Loara, Los Alamitos, and Servite Key Clubs. Our members demonstrated a huge amount of spirit and friendliness to the other groups. They included everyone in every move they took. As Western’s President, I am beyond proud of Western Key Clubbers for being such great examples of what a Key Clubber truly is. In addition, they kept their heads up even when they lost in a few games, reunited, and passed through thick and thin moments. My heart is full with love, happiness, and I thank every Western Key ClubThe first DCM of the 18-19 term! This event was very much anticipated as I counted the days that remained before the event. It was a main topic amongst my friends during the week leading up to it. I would over hear them get excited and asking around of who’s going. Arriving at the event and seeing each school with their colored attire got me really hyped up and spirited for the DCM to start. While we waited for more members to show up, I was allowed the privilege to face paint on Western’s key clubbers faces. It gave me a hearty laugh to see our members enjoying themselves and bonding even before the event started. After passing through the pledges, division updates, congratulating members and clubs on their recent achievements and successes were the activities prepared for us. My competitive spirit lit up. Loara, Los Alamitos and Western cooperatively combined forces and fought together through all the battles thrown our way that day. Thankfully, Savanna high school graciously providing our thirsty boba loving souls with great deals. To my close friends, they know my love for danc-

ber who attended for that. Lastly, one of Western’s own dedicated members, Rossana Leal, was appointed as the Division’s Member Relations Coordinator. As I said, I am beyond proud of all the achievements Western Key Club is already committing. After being involved in the planning process of April DCM, it made me enjoy the successful outcome even more because the Presidents of Division 30 South, and our LTG, Anjika Morari, spent hours into planning this event. My favorite part was leading all the activities because it allowed me to connect with more Key Clubbers among the whole division and definitely the fashion show was extremely successful. Honestly, after all of the spirit, energy, and passion that the members across the whole division demonstrated, I would not trade my time at April DCM for anything else. I am eager to see how successful the next 11 Division Council Meetings will be! Until next time :) - Ali Al-Saleem | President

ing, especially to K-Pop songs. I’m honored that I had the chance to show off not only Western’s school spirit during the fashion show, but to also strut side-by-side with my lovely president, Ali Al-Saleem and work the runway with him. I’m proud to say we’ve made our debut in Key Club! It was a historic moment for both of us and we won’t forget it without a doubt. I’d like to shine light on all our new club presidents at their respective schools and congratulate the newly elected members that ran for Division Leadership Team (DLT) positions! - Ivy Vi | Member Recognition

On April 28, Western’s Key Club 2018-2019 board held their first meeting. On this day we discussed numerous topics relating to events and had some extra social time. Many of the members got together and learned more about each other in hopes to get close with one another in the near future. Our president, Ali Al-Saleem, expertly captivated the attention of the board and held the meeting strongly during the duration. The way the meeting was held was very clean, simply-guided, and straightforward. We went over duties and such to make sure everyone knows what will take place in the next few weeks. Going into further detail, we made plans for our first boba sales of the 2018-2019 term. Also, we agreed upon raising money for charity by doing a friendly competition against each other to earn money. In these groups, we will buy baby bottles to hold the change given to us as donations. The team that accumulated the most money gets a prize from the president. After the meeting, the board met up at Modjeska Park for the April DCM. It was great to say that Western High School won first place in the event. We showed great pride and spirit as we worked our way to the top. We have not reached intimate topics since we are still not fully comfortable with each other. For the next meeting I hope that we can work together and bond to close all gaps and strengthen ties. In the future I wish to see us become one whole united Western Key Club family. - Marilitz Diwa | Publicist

Do you know how much I care about Key Club? Well, let’s just say I managed to wake up at 7 am on a SATURDAY just for this club. April 28, 2018 marks Western Key Club’s first board meeting at 9:00 am. I have been honestly waiting for that day ever since I knew that we’re going to have a meeting because it feels so official. On that day, we talked about various things. First, we started talking about old business. Some board members talked about their experiences when they attended the old events such as DCON. We moved on to new business and talked about the upcoming events. Then, the part that I love and hate the most happened: talking about how we’ve been. I know that doing this is going to make us feel more connected to each other, that’s why I love it, and hearing these amazing achievements that the board members achieved made me so happy and proud, but talking about how I’ve been definitely is something I don’t know the answer to. After that, we were reminded of our upcoming tasks, and the Eliminate Project, which is something I’m looking forward to. Basically, it’s a friendly competition where in we have baby bottles to fill with donations to help save the lives of thousands of innocent babies. The group that gathers the most change wins, and I’m excited because it feels good to know it will help save lives. That concludes our first ever meeting, and we stayed so we can all go to April DCM at Modjeska Park at the same time. I know most of the people from the board, and I found new people that I adore because of their amazing personality. It’s a known fact that I am really shy around people, but I know that the time will pass and I’m going to break out of this little shell because of this amazing board. I’m looking forward to upcoming meetings to get to know them more, and to make sure that Key Club stays amazing as it is! - Winzel Payumo | Bulletin Editor

Sunday, April 29, Knott’s Berry Farm hosted a marathon for the SDLC organization. It was early in the morning yet there were a lot of people there willing to serve our community. There were chickens wondering around the picnic area. Many volunteers had various tasks to do. We assisted venders. I was placed along with many fellow key clubbers to cheer on the walkers and support them. We would give them high fives and encourage them keep on going. The people in the marathon were very pleased to see us cheer on. We even danced for them. Other key clubbers did kids activities. They helped monitor the Orbeez pool. It was full of organizations that helped sponsor the marathon. We got a chance built a little boats. It was very entertaining. They had varieties of performers including a dance group that did many types of dances. At the end we had a chance to interact with the performers. We helped clean up and pick up trash. - Vianne Vicente | Treasurer What a thrilling event! Boredom never struck within the volunteers or the participants at any given moment. From the early morning to noon, tasks and constant activities were going on. When we arrived, we quickly checked in, filed ourselves with breakfast that was supplied by Knott’s. Afterwards we were assigned to either direct people towards the registration booth or help set up. When directing people, some of our volunteers noticed some who needed help carrying their boxes and that is when they took charge and went the extra mile for them. An hour or so later, the walk began and many of our volunteers were assigned to cheer them on over at Knott’s Berry Farm. A few of us stayed behind to run the kids zone, which consisted of mini fishing, an orbeez pit, knocking cups down with water spray bottles, as well as beanbag throws. Many kids came by and we gladly offered assistance but it wasn’t until the walk was over in a few hours that the kids zone really blew up. They loved the orbeez pool, constantly smiling and laughing whenever they touched an orbee. Of course, we reminded them not to throw them or eat it. Cleaning up the spilled orbeez from the kids was foreseeable. After the supervisor came around to close the kids booths, everyone fled to the main stage and watched many performances. - Kathy Tu | Historian

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ⟡ Meet one of WKC’s Spirit Coordinator, Jazmin Martinez! 1.

It has only been a month since the 2018-2019 term started, but how does it feel like to be one of the spirit coordinators?

⟡⟡

Being a spirit coordinator is something I thought about a lot. Then I said to myself, I love spirit, I love coordinating, why

don’t we put that together and apply for it. Needless to say, I can’t wait to express the spirit aspect of my position with newcomers. 2.

What are your goals for this term? My goals for this term include encouraging newcomers to volunteer in events and to build stronger bonds with my peers.

3.

What do you love the most about Key Club? The thing I love most about key club is the welcome ing energy we have. In my classes I’ve talked to people about key club and they have always said that it seems like a fun club to join and they will definitely participate in, next year.

4.

What is your favorite Key Club moment? My favorite key club moment so far, has got to be the key club banquet. Everything about it, from seeing how my friends worked hard on planning it, to seeing how it came alive, was truly magical. The set ting of the place was pleasantly wonderful and I couldn’t have asked to spend the night with anyone else.

5.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently? The funniest thing that happened to me recently was that I forget my performing heels at home, so I did my choir concert in socks. I was mortified, but if anything, it was just easier to perform in.

6.

What are five small things that make your days better? Five small things that could easily make my day better are simple, like just give me a hug, I love hugs. Or a little reassurance is great every now and then. Let’s talk about some of our favorite artists and how great they are. Make me laugh, laughing is such a delightful feeling, especially when you’re on the brink of crying from laughter, those are the best laughing sessions. Ask me how I feel (when the time is appropriate), but be prepared because I will ask you how you feel as well as the remix.

7.

If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room, what would it be? If I could choose one song to play every time I walked into a room, I would want it to be Trust Fund Baby by Why Don’t We. It’s such an amazing song and the fact that Ed Sheeran wrote it, truly astonishing.

8.

Lastly, how do you feel? How do I feel? HOW DO I FEEL?? I feel pretty ok-I FEEL GOOD, OH I FEEL SO GOOD OH, I FEEL FINE ALL OF THE TIME ABOOGA ABOOGA ABOOGA-BOOGA BOOGA!
