The Key Club Times

! S 0 3 D s g n i t e Gre WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL PIOS! Alright, I know you probably heard that phrase about twenty times since we got back to school, and I know that you’re probably super upset that summer is finally over, but it’s time to get down to business again. With the dread that might be in your hearts, I hope that you’ve managed to find the small joys in returning to school: seeing your friends and favorite teachers again, taking fun elective classes (and maybe even less classes if you’re a senior), and being one step closer to graduation. But you know the best part about being back in school? BEING ABLE TO ATTEND KEY CLUB MEETINGS! Well actually, we’re not starting meetings just yet, but you’ll have to wait until Club Rush to see what we have in store for you! I couldn’t be any more estatic to see all of your friendly faces again—or for the first time, if you’re new to Key Club! It was definitely a challenge to keep in touch and keep on serving during the summer what with summer vacations and the plague that we call laziness, but hopefully, we’ll all be able to get involved and active in our community again. But now that we’re getting back into the groove of school, I realized that for some of you who are challenging yourselves to take harder classes than usual or who are heavily involved this year, you might get discouraged along the way. Just remember: strive for progress, not for perfection. Always try to make a better version of yourself, and don’t forget to recognize yourself for enduring the long journey that is high school. You deserve it! I hope to see you all at our first meeting of the school year, stay cool! Shinin’ With Service, Van Bui, Western Key Club President 2015-2016

Hey Pios! Having a great time back at school Pios? Did did you miss us? Well, I can’t wait to see you during Club Rush in a couple of weeks! Then we’ll be able to start the weekly club meetings and it will be easier to get all of your weekly club updates. I want to challenge you members. See if you can bring a friend to our table during Club Rush, and by doing that you’ll help to make our Key Club family even bigger! I hope you all keep your grades up in the first quarter, as a senior it really feels like that what sets the standard for me for the rest of the year. I know most of the time it’s kind of easy but don’t slack off Pios, something can always hit you from out of no where. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication Pios! Yours Truly, Michael Coates, Bulletin Editor 2015-2016

Inclusiveness, one of the 4 core values that Key Club stands upon, such as Cypress key Club were welcoming of us into their social A day in the Park, on Saturday July 11th the cub buddies of Western, Cypress and Los Alamitos had been invited from Cypress Key Club to join their social, as this day was filled with fun bonding games as well as ice breakers were we all got the chance to get to know each other better. While arriving at the social I was welcomed by many people that were there before hand but as not knowing who they were I was excited as their faces filled with glee in meeting new people and acquire more individual in their group circle. Before beginning with any of the activities we went around a circle and introduced each other and we had to include something interesting about ourselves, as this was the first step in breaking the ice when then moved on to the ice breakers and games. One of the icebreakers that we played was that we were given a topic and we have to say what something that was relevant to that topics some of the topics include Disney Movies, the States -Abraham Vicente

A Day in the Park We next played ping pong which is similar to pterodactyl, but instead you say ping and pong. The concept is still the same that you have to say these words without showing your teeth or laughing. This game was pretty intense since everyone was trying to make each other laugh. Since I laugh pretty easily, I was surprised I was able to spend a good amount of time without laughing, but in the end I ended up losing anyways. Later on we played Indian Chief which is always a good game to play at socials, because it gets everyone involved. It was hilarious to see how we struggled when we were playing games due to the fact none of us could be serious when picking an Indian Chief. We would immediately give each other away without meaning to. We were all very competitive when it came to playing the games. Especially when we had to all hold hands and untangle ourselves from one another -Jennifer Hernandez

OC Fair

Walking into the fairgrounds, I honestly didn't know what to expect. Told to look for bright red barn, it took 10 minutes of walking around in the burning ball of gas we call a sun before we found it. When we found the barn and walked in, we were met with the Heifer International exhibit. I had previously attended the training for the Heifer International exhibit training the Monday of the event for the volunteers. It was there I was able to learn about what Heifer really was. An organization made to eliminate world hunger by providing livestock and agricultural knowledge to teach people to care for themselves, I soon grew attached to this cause. This grew during my time volunteering, my job, handing out buttons to visitors. During this, I was to talk about Heifer to visitors by explaining its cause and talking of its accomplishment.

Towards the end of our shift, Linda, our club historian, and other members came for the last shift. Meanwhile we finished up our shift, they signed in and waited for us to finish. It was interesting to see them dress up into the costumes they had at the exhibit. They had chicken hats and a cow costume. Joanna, one of our general members, was courageous to try on the cow costume and wear it while handing out the pins. -Jennifer Hernandez

July DCM

Of course all suns want to have fun in the sun! The countdown for July 25th started right when summer began. After attending the Region Officer Training Conference, I couldn’t wait to see all those lovely and friendly faces once again and Beach Boomba made that desire a reality. When I first got there, everyone seemed so awake and excited. I mean, who doesn’t love the beach right? We had to check in with our division which was pretty cool since our names were already on the list. If the names weren’t on the list, then the were sim-ply added which demonstrates the inclusiveness Key Club portrays. -Brenda Rosas

It is the usual for Beach Boomba to serve pizza, snacks, and water, plus have a beach clean-up. There has been slight changes, like a sudden watermelon contest, which has been interesting to watch (but made me crave watermelon). What’s great about having a Key Club event at the beach is-duh- the beach! But it requires some great time managing and responsibility to not get side-tracked and to return to the original schedule of the event. Back to the schedule of the event, there was also Pie-an-LTG! Basically, you’d get to pie a Lieuteniant Governor of your choice for $1! I think it’s a smart way to get some fundraising done (but probably not so fun for the one getting pied). Other than that, the happy atmosphere is what really bundles everything up. -Kiara Legaspy
