Admission to the Midwest Foodservice Expo is included with registration for each competitor. The early registration deadline for all of the competitions is Wednesday, February 15, 2017. The standard registration deadline is Wednesday, March 1, 2017. No competition entries will be accepted onsite. All registrations include a 1-year membership to WBA. Registration fees are non-refundable. Winners will be announced at the Awards & Appetizers Networking Evening.

The first WBA member event of the year was a huge success! Members met at Tamara’s the Cake Guru in Appleton, WI followed by a selfguided tour of the Nutcracker in the Castle at the Paine Art Center in Oshkosh, WI. One of the many highlights of the day was viewing the magical Land of Sweets, a room decorated wall to wall in mesmerizing desserts. Members also visited the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Cupcake Café. Among the members in attendance for the festivities were Brenda from Bakery on Terrace, Jerry from Manderfield’s Home Bakery, Ken & Peggy from Sweet Perfections Bake Shoppe, Tara from Sweet Lola’s, Jennifer & Ben from Monzu Bakery, Chef Julia from FVTC, Chef Tom from MPTC, Kate and Amanda from Valley Bakers, Annie and Jim from Door County Kraut Co., Donna and Ginger from Artistic Cakes & Cookies, Ellen and Bob from The Cupcakearhee, Dawn from Simple Simon Bakery, Tamara from Tamara’s the Cake Guru, and Jessica from WBA. Congratulations to Tamara’s the Cake Guru, WBA’s Bakery of the Month The Wisconsin Bakers Association (WBA) has declared Tamara’s the Cake Guru in Appleton, WI the Bakery Operation of the Month for January 2017. Tamara’s the Cake Guru hosted the WBA’s Mingle & Jingle member event on January 9, 2017. WBA members toured the Casaloma Drive location of Tamara’s the Cake Guru followed by the Nutcracker in the Castle at the Paine Art Center in Oshkosh, WI. Pictures from the event are available here.

Tamara’s the Cake Guru is owned by Tamara Mugerauer which started in 1997 as a Cake Studio. The sweets boutique opened in November 2012 and specializes in wedding cakes with a full line of desserts baked fresh every day. The Oshkosh location includes a decorating and production area as well as a retail storefront. The bakery expanded to Appleton, WI in February 2015 with it’s first satellite location opening and later adding a second location in downtown Appleton in late October 2016. Today, Tamara’s the Cake Guru has a total of 50 full and part-time employees.
The Bakery of the Month Award was presented to Tamara Mugerauer in Appleton by WBA’s Communications Director, Jessica Hoover. WBA members must meet the following criteria to be considered for Bakery Operation of the Month: Be a WBA member in good standing; give back to their community as well as the baking industry; have outstanding business qualifications; and agree to have the award publicized in the media. Will Your Bakery Be The Next Bakery Operation of the Year? The Bakery Operation of the Year is a special award presented to one outstanding bakery operation at each year’s annual Awards & Appetizers Networking Evening held in conjuction with the Midwest Foodservice Expo. This year, Valley Bakers is sponsoring the Bakery Operation of the Year program. The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding bakery operation each year. The first Bakery Operation of the Year award was presented in 2001 to Terry and Kitty Colligan of Colligan’s Bakery in Plover, WI.
How Does the Program Work? Nominations for the 2017 Bakery Operation of the Year may be submitted to the WBA office for consideration. A nomination form is available on WBA’s website: www.wibakers.com. Past winners of the BOY award vote for the current year’s winner. Each year the recipient is kept a surprise until the moment the winner is announced at the WBA’s annual Awards & Appetizers Networking Evening. This year’s event will take place on Monday, March 13th.
