Looking Ahead: Upcoming Events The Wedding Show Summer Edition The Cake Decorating Competition returns for its second year at The Wedding Show Summer Edition at Shopko Hall in Green Bay, WI on Sunday, July 23, 2017. One lucky couple will get to choose between various personalized cakes decorated by local bakeries (& WBA Members) that will be on display at The Wedding Show: Summer Edition. Two awards will be presented- the couples choice and the people’s choice.

WBA Family Day at Wisconsin State Fair The WBA Board of Directors invites members to attend our annual WBA Family Day at the 2017 Wisconsin State Fair on Monday, August 7th!

Valley’s Annual Food Show Valley Cooperative’s Annual Food Show will be held Thursday, August 10th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm at Shopko Hall in Green Bay, WI. There will be a tailgate party following the food show outside Shopko Hall with live music from Midwest Dueling Pianos and the Green Bay Packers will be playing the Philadephia Eagles that evening. International Cake Exploration Societé Convention Coming To Spokane, WA Registration is open for The International Cake Exploration Societé’s (ICES) 42nd annual convention, to be held at the Spokane Convention Center in Spokane, Washington from August 3rd to August 6th, 2017.

ICES is a long-running organization dedicated to educating cake decorators and sugar artists with the mission to “preserve, advance and encourage exploration of the sugar arts.”

The annual convention is the highlight of

showcases. The convention will offer handson classes and demonstrations by experts and celebrities in the field.

This year’s convention will feature a Live Cake Challenge on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 10am to 3pm in the Cake Room at the Spokane Convention Center. Three teams will compete for prizes and bragging rights by designing cakes to fit the theme “Spokane Riverfront Park” Applications to compete in the challenge will be accepted through April 29th.

Sugar art displays from around the world will be on display at the Sugar Art Gallery. Sugar artists of all levels bring cakes, pulled sugar pieces, pastillage and more for visitors to peruse throughout the convention. Pre-registered displays will be eligible for prize drawings.

This year, the Vendor Hall will feature booths from a wide variety of sugar art suppliers who will provide free demonstrations, many by renowned cake decorators. Cake decorators excitedly look forward to new product debuts at the yearly ICES Convention.

Legislative Update: Work Permit Law Change Employment of Minors - 2017 Wisconsin Act 11 On June 21st, Governor Walker signed AB25 - Child Labor Permits into law. This change became effective as of June 23, 2017.

Changes to Wisconsin’s child labor law remove the requirement that 16- and 17-yearold minors obtain work permits prior to beginning work. This law also changes the terminology to be used and refers to the “employment of minors” instead of “child labor.”

Effective June 23, 2017, 16- and 17-year-old minors do NOT need to obtain a work permit prior to beginning work. Work permits will not be issued for minors ages 16 or 17.

State law prohibits the use of minors to perform hazardous work. Prohibited employment provisions still apply to work that 16and 17-year-old minors can be employed to perform. This law makes no changes to the requirements for minors younger than 16.

Minors younger than 16 must obtain a work permit prior to beginning work, unless an exception applies. There are no changes to the maximum hours or times of days that minors younger than 16 may work, or the types of work that minors younger than 16 may perform.
